AT a school in the Ndlangubo Tribal Authority, outside Empangeni is a centre for education. The Enqoleni Education Centre is located at Mathubu Primary School and is open to pupils from schools in the area. The centre stocks subject resources to support rural schools which do not have sufficient equipment. ‘Resources range from physical
science and life science technology equipment to computers,’ said centre manager, Ntombizethu Dlamini. The computer room is open to pupils from several schools in the area who use them to do research for projects or learning prog rammes. The centre is also geared to promote reading and has a large selection of reading material. For more information contact the centre manager on 082 2556400.
Time to go can crazy and create WHO would have thought that a pile of trash could win you a share of R50 000 cash? This is exactly what Collect-aCan’s 2012 CAN Craze competition is about. Starting nationally, the competition, that kicks off this month, encourages schools or pupils to build a structure out of 300 or more used cans in the most creative way possible, with the winning entrants awarded cash prizes. Entries will close on 30 September. ‘The hands-on nature of the CAN Craze Competition gets children to interact with the used cans and in doing so, to recognise that what may seem like a waste product is in fact a
valuable resource that can be reused in their artwork and then recycled, prolonging the lifespan of the raw materials and preserving natural resources as well as energy,’ says Zimasa Velaphi, Public Relations and Marketing Manager of Collecta-Can. ‘The cans used in the building of these structures need to be collected by the participants and are later recovered by Collect-aCan and processed for recycling. ‘This process demonstrates to schools and pupils the environmental benefits of collecting cans and shows them that recycling can be fun.’ Participation in the competition can be individual or in
teams. Pictures of structures need to be submitted to Collecta-Can along with a completed entry form which can be obtained from Collect-a-Can branches or from their website www.collectacan.co.za. Collect-a-Can encourages organisations to get involved with schools entering the CAN Craze Competition. In 2010 a winning structure of dolphins, built by Creston College, was put on display outside the KZN Sharks Board offices during their National Marine Week activities. To find out more about Collect-a-Can and their activities visit Collect-a-Can’s website www.collectacan.co.za or contact the Collect-a-Can head office on 011 4662939.
