DYLAN Issue #1

DYLAN SUMMER EDITION ISSUE ONE

HELLO We would like to say hello, welcome and thank you for being a part of DYLAN Magazine! We hope you enjoy our first issue, and we look forward to sharing many more with you.

WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT? Well, DYLAN was originally created to keep us both busy over the summer. When the idea for the magazine came up we wanted to create something that would not only appeal to us, but people like us in both content and visually too.

COOL! SO WHAT’S INSIDE? The magazine covers seven areas of our life that we enjoy and have interests in. We wanted to write and research things that we loved - they’re not necissarily the most recent or ‘now’, but we enjoy them and wished to share them with those around us. As for the content, you’ll just have to keep going to find out!

My name is Eilidh Reid, I’m 17 and my favourite thing to do is make things. Whether it be films, badges, playlists or our very own magazine I’m always up for a creative challenge.

Now I’ve left school I have a very long summer ahead of me till I leave home to go to Duncan of Jordanstone college of Art and Design in Dundee. With all this free time I thought it would be fun to have a project to keep me busy and that’s where DYLAN comes in. Besides that, I love rumaging in old record stores, uncovering and upcycling clothing, watching films and dancing really badly to whatever music happens to be on at the time. My favourite bands are Radiohead, Mumford and Sons and Swim Deep. I’m also a huge fan of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.

5 My name is Maddy and I am 15. My favourite thing is English; I spend most of my time reading books, blogs, or magazines. I always like finding new plots to explore and have read everything from Shakespeare to The Twilight Series. I also have an unhealthy obsession with fashion and beauty and spend a lot of time reading Vogue. These three loves marry together perfectly in a blog I write called Maddy Scribbles. I really love writing it as it helps me feel more included in the fashion world as I’m up here in Scotland. In my spare time (when I'm not reading or blogging) I like to have a go at other creative things such as photography, sewing, scrapbooking, fashion designing and (very briefly) knitting. When my sister came to me with the idea for DYLAN I thought that it would be a great way to improve my writing and to talk about things that I enjoy other than beauty and fashion such as books, youtube, films and music.

Ginger and Rosa Book Vs Film

&

GINGER ROSA Ginger and Rosa is a coming of age story, in a sense, though it takes a different approach to any other I’ve seen. Set in the 60s the tale follows two best friends, Ginger and Rosa, and how events in their life twist their relationship to breaking point. It’s a basic plot, and one that’s been used many times, but talented writer and director Sally Potter manages to craft this tale into a heart warming and heart wrenching film.

****

I first saw Ginger and Rosa at the Glasgow Picture House with my mum. I’d never heard of the film before but I went with her all the same. I was a bit apprehensive at first because me and my mum have different tastes when it comes to movies, and after seeing the poster outside with two sad looking girls staring meaningfully into the brooding abys behind them, I had already made up my mind that I wasn’t going to like the film. As the saying goes ‘never judge a movie by it’s poster’ - I did just that, and fell into the trap of forming my opinion of it before I’d actually seen it. And, of course, my previous judgement was completely and entirely wrong. Not in the sense that the film’s not a deep meaningful film about two girls, because that’s essentially what it is, but I was wrong about me enjoying the film. Yes, I even surprised myself when I walked out the cinema doors afterwards smiling and talking about it all the way home. Perhaps it’s because I’m a teenager myself, but I felt the writing of both girls was so accurate that I could relate to both innocent, level headed Ginger and the rebellious, free spirit Rosa. There were parts of each that I admired and I thought that was really interesting for the type of film.

However, I was especially inspired by Ginger. The film is set around the time of the cuban missile crisis, and I can’t even imagine what it would feel like to be living then. After hearing about their impending doom on the radio, Ginger becomes very scared and frightened, as anyone would be when they find out a neuclear bomb could drop any minute and wipe out the entire population. But instead of cowering in fear or lose hope as I would probably do, Ginger decides to take action and join actavist groups that campaign against the threat of neuclear war. Although this gets her into a bit of trouble, I admire her courage, bravery and her motivation to stand up and fight for what is right. The performances by both Elle Fanning (Ginger) and Alice Englert (Rosa) are astounding emotionally, and to find that they were only fourteen and seventeen at the time is even more impressive. Ginger and Rosa, I admit, impressed me much more than I ever thought was possible for a coming of age story. The characters, the plot and soundtrack featuring Little Richard and Miles Davis, all mix together magically to form an outstanding piece of cinema that everyone can enjoy.

BOOK vs FILM

THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER

The Perks Of Being A Wallflower is a much talked about book recently turned into a film, and I am going to compare the two to see if the film adaptation really lives up to the book.

THE BOOK // THE FILM

The book, written by Stephen Chbosky, is now known as a common classic, and despite being well received back in 1999 when it was originally published, it has only recently become popular again with the release of the film. Perks is written as a series of letters from sixteen year old Charlie Kelmeckis to an unknown person about his first year back at school since he was pulled out after his best friend Michael killed himself. The letters tell us about his first date and his first kiss, how he deals with bullies, his experimentations with drugs and alcohol, and how he makes friends, loses them, and gains them back again. The book is one of my all-time favourites; it is funny, incredibly sad but also incredibly happy and very well written. Stephen Chbosky manages to capture teenagers without making them feel too childlike which I find is a common mistake made by authors, and yet still makes Charlie slightly naive like a sixteen year old who has been out of school for a year should. The story is incredibly relatable to most adults as they reminisce about their teenage years and teenagers themselves. Throughout the novel Charlie creates his own soundtrack through a series of mix tapes full of iconic songs such as The Smiths ‘Asleep’ and ‘Heroes’ by David Bowie, reads a huge stack of classic novels, his favourite being Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird, and gets involved with his friends in the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Charlie is very sensitive and shy but also very endearing. Throughout the book you can’t help but become very attached to Charlie and develop a strong emotional connection with him and it is because he deals with so many situations that there is at least one that everyone can relate to. His friends, Patrick and Sam, are also very important characters and have the exterior of loud and confident people, but Charlie starts to learn that they are very similar to him. Charlie goes on an emotional roller coaster throughout the book, and without Patrick and Sam he wouldn’t have been able to push through and stay positive. His final letter closes with feelings of hope; he speaks of making new friends after Sam and Patrick leave for college and trying to be less of a wallflower.

The film, made in 2012, was also directed and screen written by Stephen Chbosky which is unusual for adaptations and it did add extra pressure for the film to deliver. When I first heard that Logan Lerman was cast to be Charlie, I was a little unsure as I had only seen him in Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief where he played a character with much less emotional depth. I, however, tried to keep an open mind as I sat in the Vue cinema in Aberdeen with only my friend and an otherwise completely empty screen. Despite my best efforts, I only liked Logan Lerman, and did not love him in the same way I loved book-Charlie. I felt that book-Charlie was a lot more emotional compared to film-Charlie, who skimmed the water compared the ocean deep amount of feeling book-Charlie had. While Paul Rudd’s portrayal of Charlie’s English teacher was great, his screen-time was far too small and Stephen Chbosky missed out some beautiful and important scenes between the pair that I was really surprised he chose to cut. I was also devastated to see that Charlie’s beautiful, gut-wrenching poem to his friends at Christmas was cut out, and I felt that it was an important moment for Charlie as he finally said all of the meaningful things he thought to his friends who he felt had finally accepted him (Stephen Chobsky obviously disagreed). However, despite Logan Lerman’s slightly wooden acting and Emma Watson’s cringe-worthy American accent, there were some really beautiful moments in the film. The creation Patrick was one of the best decisions the filmmakers made, from Stephen Chobsky’s witty lines to Ezra Miller’s incredible, heart-filled acting, Patrick was by far my favourite character in the film. The soundtrack to the film was beautiful; of the 22 songs listed in the novel, only one was changed in the film, and I actually preferred the change as they chose David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ over Feeltwood Mac’s ‘Landslide’ for the famous Tunnel Scene, when Charlie first says ‘I feel infinite’. Overall I did enjoy the film, but The Perks Of Being A Wallflower book will always hold a special place in my heart, right beside Nutella and Ryan Gosling’s face.

The Sky is Everywhere Divergent

The Sky is Everywhere By Jandy Nelson // Article by Maddy

I had never read anything by Jandy Nelson before so I had no idea what to expect from The Sky Is Everywhere. While I would love to tell you that the reason I bought this book was because of the plot, it was really because it was a limited edition copy that had blue text instead of black, picture throughout and a cool cover (yes, I really did judge a book by its cover). I was, however, pleasantly surprised when I read the book and found the novel to be even more appealing than its appearance. The story follows Lennie, a seventeen year old girl from North California who is trying to deal with the loss of her sister. As she starts to enter back into the ‘real world’ and out of her bedroom, ‘The Sanctum’, she accidentally falls for Jo Fontaine, a gorgeous new transfer student who arrived in her absence from school. Lennie is one of my favourite female protagonists from all of the books I have read because of how real she feels. Lennie is not the most popular, beautiful or friendly girl in her school, nor is she the geekiest. Her grief, her personality and her ‘dorky’ relationship with Jo Fontaine all feel realistic as they are not perfect unlike some books of

a similar genre and rom-com films where the protagonists life goes from so awful to so perfect that it becomes unbelievable. Throughout her life Lennie has to deal with lots of ordinary teenage problems, as well as the death of her sister. She has to deal with sympathy she doesn’t want from people around her, bullying from an older girl in her band as well as normal friendship problems and a crush on a beautiful foreign boy. Her day-to-day problems are like most teenage girls’ and it makes her a very relatable character. The characters Lennie has supporting her are great; she has her Gran, who loves herbal remedies and believes that Lennie’s wellbeing is determined by a house-plant, her Uncle Big who is a hopeless romantic and five-time divorcee, Sarah, her ‘goth-gone-cowgirl’ best friend and Toby, her sister’s boyfriend who Lennie feels is the only one who truly understands her sadness. As she struggles to deal with the grief she has and the guilt she feels for allowing herself to be happy with Jo in light of her sister’s death, her relationships with friends, family and her sister’s boyfriend spiral out of control.

DIVERGENT By Veronica Roth // Article by Maddy

With the first film recently cast and the third instalment to the series set to be released in October, a lot of people have been talking about Divergent. The books Divergent and it’s sequel Insurgent are much hyped by the same fandom obsessed group of teenagers who religiously read The Hunger Games, City Of Bones and Harry Potter, and although I don’t want to, it is very hard not to make comparisons between the different series.

15

In case you have been living under a book-deprived rock for the last six months, I’ll explain the plot of the books briefly (or as briefly as I can!): Divergent starts with Beatrice Prior, a sixteen year old Abnegation girl getting ready to make the biggest decision of her life. In the city that she lives in there are five Factions; Amity, Candor, Erudite, Dauntless and Abnegation. At the age of sixteen you choose whether you will stay in the Faction you were born and raised in with your family, or choose another and participate in an initiation process. Before you make your decision, however, you must undergo a test that will tell you what Faction you have an aptitude for. Most people have an aptitude for one Faction, and some rarities have an aptitude for two, so when Beatrice leaves the testing room with an aptitude for three Factions she has to decide where she will go. The three Factions are Erudite, the Faction of the intelligent, Dauntless, the Faction of the brave, and Abnegation, the Faction of selflessness where her mother and father are. Her test scores are to be kept a secret, as she is told that she is Divergent, an outcast, and that no Faction would want her if they knew she had an aptitude for three. In the end she goes with her heart and picks Dauntless, but she is not the only person to surprise everyone with her choice at the Choosing Ceremony. Beatrice becomes Tris as she starts her new life as a Dauntless initiate, and makes some new friends and enemies. As the walls close in around her and her big secret, she finds she can confide in Four, her Dauntless initiate instructor. With him she starts to notice the cracks in the Faction system, and becomes wary of the powers that some of the Factions have. So when Erudite

attack the other Factions using Dauntless as their warriors, it is up to Tris and Four to try and save the Abnegation and the rest of the Factions before it is too late. I really love the character of Tris as her mind works differently from the other characters because she is divergent, meaning she is logical, brave and selfless. Her traumatising initiation process brings out the best in her personality, and over the two week period you really see her grow and change as a character. In the first book Tris is driven, determined and always in control of herself, and these personality traits are mirrored in the plot. Insurgent begins at the end of the battle between Erudite and Abnegation, right after where the first book ended. Although the battle may be won, the war has only just started and for Tris and Four they have no idea what to expect. While Four is dealing with a past that is coming back to haunt him, Tris is struggling to deal with the devastating events she found herself a part of during the attack. In Insurgent Tris changes, and becomes caught up in her grief and guilt. She starts to have suicidal tendencies, putting herself in difficult positions without any real care for her own life. It is here that you can’t help but compare Tris to Katniss in Mockingjay, the third The Hunger Games book. While Katniss becomes obsessed with killing President Snow, Tris is the opposite and feels it’s her duty to protect the life of Jeanine Matthews, the Erudite leader. Her relationship with Four becomes strained and at breaking point as she works against him to find out the truth to what the Erudite really want, but knowledge comes with a price.

PEOPLE

A Rad Begninning with Ewan McIntosh

A RAD BEGINNING Scottish Youtuber and rising star Ewan McIntosh a.k.a ‘RadHaggis’ encourages young people to get involved in the youtube community and tells us more about his ‘rad’ experiences.

WHO’S VIDEOS DID YOU FIRST WATCH THAT REALLY INSPIRED YOU TO MAKE YOUR OWN?

HOW EASY WAS IT KEEPING YOUR CHANNEL A SECRET FROM YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY/PEOPLE AT SCHOOL?

I first started watching tomska and charlieissocoollike, but from there I was introduced to the idea of an entire community of youtubers in Britain who, for the most part, were all so creative, original and fantastic and I wanted to join in. It looked really fun to do too.

It was pretty hard after this ‘swarm’ of people came, I was gaining [followers] rapidly but still didn’t consider my videos very good, and was constantly paranoid that people would find me and mock me for it. Eventually, everyone somehow found out overnight but they were all really lovely about it and people seem to have a lot more respect for me as a result.

HOW DID IT FEEL FIRST JOINING THE ‘YOUTUBE COMMUNITY’? I didn’t really join in that much until after Christmas when Ben Cook and I were introduced to each other and he suddenly brought a swarm of lovely people to my channel and I discovered a lot of smaller youtubers like myself, some of whom I became very close to and still talk to daily which is rad.

WHAT DID YOU DO WHEN THEY FOUND OUT? It was a bit awkward to start with, but I quickly found that everybody thought it was pretty cool, rather than ‘lame’ or ‘nerdy’ which was awesome!

19

HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU PUT INTO THE ENTIRE PROCESS OF MAKING ONE VIDEO?

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT MAKING YOUTUBE VIDEOS?

I usually spend around half an hour filming the main parts, and then another half hour for extra bits and then around an hour editing it. Then I spend approximately another hour colour correcting, doing special effects and adding other extras. Rendering used to take me three hours but I’ve cut it down to four minutes by spending £700 on computer parts and building one from scratch.

I think my favourite thing has been all the amazing people I’ve got the chance to know and also watching myself improve. I put a cut back to my first ever video in ‘A RAD BEGINNING’ and you can see how far I’ve come in 10 months!

HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO BALANCE SCHOOL WORK WITH YOUR ONLINE LIFE? Although it’s bad, I spend way too much time online doing pretty much nothing, which as a result means that I tend to do a lot of homework in the morning before school, which can be difficult too as I have a paper round to do as well.

YOU RECENTLY WENT TO LONDON TO FILM WITH BENJAMIN COOK FOR ‘BECOMING YOUTUBE’. DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING INTERESTING FROM THE EXPERIENCE? I had a lot of fun on that shoot, and I learned how much goes into these kind of things and how much we should appreciate them, like we spent around four hours filming it and Ben will have to spend the same amount of time editing together just that little bit, and you’ll see how short the sketch is in the end!

ROCKNESS FESTIVAL 2013 Article by Eilidh // Photo by Kerri Ogg

I’d never been to a festival before this year’s Rockness so I had no idea what to expect. I had watched festivals on TV and had seen band pictures and movies so I knew vaguely what was essential but I wasn’t entirely sure what I’d signed up for. Luckily with all my friends around me I’d signed up for the best weekend of my life, so far, seeing

great music and dancing around and making new friends. There were so many laughs it’s hard to count them all, but the live music were definately the best parts. The weather was stunning, for Scotland, and the location was beautiful. I highly recommend Rockness Festival for any first time festival goers, but I will almost certainly be back.

DRKLNG ZEBRA KATZ My love for Zebra Katz began when I saw their name on the Rockness lineup. I was curious as to who they were and started listening to their single ‘Ima Read’ and it instantly became a favourite between me and my friends. Perhaps because it made us feel pretty cool to dance around in a gangster like fashion or because we all desired a voice as deep as his, but we listened to it non stop till the festival, and a lot more after. After becoming obsessed with the song I decided to listen to the newest album DRKLNG. So unlike any other music I listen to the album’s repetitive base line and beat under and a heavy rap vocal from the man himself is not always easy to listen to. Some of it is chilled out and some is more upbeat but when you’re in the mood the album is a great one to listen to at parties. I will never forget the Zebra Kats set at Rockness, and even if this music is not your style I recommend you give it a try just incase it reveals your inner gangster. DRKLNG is available to buy from iTunes now.

ALL OUR FAVOURITE STORIES DOG IS DEAD I rarely find albums that I can listen to from beginning to end and enjoy every second. So, when I came across the debut album from the Nottingham based band I was more than a little bit excited. Peppered with magical harmonies and a few sax solos All Our Favourite Stories perfectly combines good old pop music with something a little more interesting. I saw the band live at Rockness Festival this year and their set was fun, fuelled by their obvious passion and enthusiastic crowd.

After the show I stuck around to say hello and there really couldn’t have been a nicer group of guys to speak to. I very much enjoyed their set and I listened to the album for a solid three weeks straight afterwards. The tracks don’t get old or too repetitive; they always sound charming and fresh, which is when you know that the album you’re listening to is not only a good one, but a great one. All Our Favourite Stories is available to buy from iTunes now.

SUMMER FASHION TRENDS

I have loved fashion for as long as I can remember. To me, there is nothing more exciting and interesting than watching London Fashion Week streamlined on my computer and ogling the newest trends as they step out on the catwalk. I have summed up the latest summer fashion trends so that everyone can look stylish this summer.

ShoeTrend

Hanna Flatform Sandals from TOPSHOP // £32 Flatform sandals are the shoe for this summer as they keep you looking tall and elegant while also having practical and comfortable footwear for your holidays.

Festival Trend

Joules Wellington Boots // £39.95 It wouldn’t be a British festival without a bit of mud, but who said wellies can’t be fashionable?

TOP TREND

Chartreuse Crop Top from TOPSHOP // £15 Neon is back and is bigger than ever this Spring/Summer and so are crop tops, so this strappy from TOPSHOP is a must-have for any trend lover.

SWIMWEAR TREND

High-Waisted Bikini from TOPSHOP // £34 High-waisted bikinis are one of my favourite new summer pieces as they are super sexy but also very flattering. This one from TOPSHOP would be great for curvier girls who have a great bust, but there are styles out there for all body shapes and sizes.

JacketTrend

Floral Kimono from Miss Selfridge // £55 Kimonos are one of the hottest jackets this season, and have made several appearances at festivals already this summer including Coachella. By throwing these on top of a crop top and a pair of cut-off shorts, they can turn a simple outfit into a beautiful, stylish masterpiece in seconds.

29

1 1. Topshop Cobalt Crop Jumper: If you’re a bit of a trendfollower then you’ll love this jumper as it falls into two of the main trends this summer: cropped and cobalt. This jumper is lightweight enough to wear in the British summer and looks amazing with high waisted jeans or skater skirts for a perfectly on-trend look. 2. Zara TRF Patterned Blouse: The blouses from Zara TRF are consistently beautiful, with different animal or floral patterns in each range. I love mine and it is a staple in my wardrobe as it goes with almost everything, and can be worn over a strappy top for a casual daytime look or over a lacy bra for a sexier evening look. 3. Topshop Denim Skater Skirt: Skater skirts are my favourite for summer as they are fun, flirty and flatter a lot of different body shapes. They show off enough of your legs to get a tan without feeling self-concious about having your legs out and come in a range of colours and patterns.

1 1. Vintage crochet top: This was given to me by my Mum’s friend. Apparently her son bought it for her in a Vintage shop in London. The lace is fragile, and there are a few extra poppers fitted at the back in stange places, but I think this just adds to the unique character of the garment.

2. Blue Joe Denim Jacket: This was purchased from a local charity shop with a view of upcycling it. I encourage everyone to rake through Charity Shops every once in a while - you might just find some treasure burried beneath the dozens of china tea sets and plaid skirts.

3. Transparent Jelly pumps: These were another great bargain find in a local charity shop. I saw them and felt instantly nostalgic of my childhood when I used to wear these kind of shoes all the time. Personally I think they’re really cute and are great for summer!

37 LILLIAN // PARISIAN TO BE

GEMMA // GEMMAER

There is something about summer that is simply irresistible. Most likely due to nostalgia from the adolescent years, bursting with memories of ice pops, swimming, and sweaty clothes, the time period from June through August has a special place in our hearts. Now, we’re a bit older, and for those of us who are beauty-centric and get more excited about the most recent Laura Mercier release than Christmas morning, summer newly induces visions of glowing skin, bronzy cheeks, and lighter bases. Now, I’m an all-year-round bronzer sort of gal (honourable mention to NARS Laguna) and I’m a dewy base, BB and tinted moisturizer maven, so there was only one product that caught my eye, therefore earning status as a summer must-have. The Stila Convertible Colour in Gerbera is my summer obsession. I’m already a self-confessed, blush obsessive, so any cheeky product gets my heart rate pumping. Put this love in cream form; add a peachy yet pink, perfection of a pigment and you have Gerbera. The formulation is pigmented, easy to apply, and sticks around for a good while. It’s quite sticky, but it imparts a subtle shine on the cheeks which screams ‘glow’. As for application, just tap your regular blush brush in the product and apply to the apples or wherever floats your boat. As much as I love a good ice cream cone, the Stila Convertible Colour in Gerbera is my true summer love. When the time comes to slap on the morning war paint, my starry eyes dart directly for the peachy, pink packaging. It really is true love...

The Fudge Urban Sea Salt Spray is my absolute staple for this summer. A cheaper alternative to the much coveted Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, this is a delicious coconut scented concoction which gives you beautifully beachy waves super easily. Simply spray onto damp hair, scrunch up the ends of your hair, and allow to air dry. I use this every time I wash my hair and it reduces both the amount of time taken to style my hair, and the amount of heat I need to use, so I can spend more time outside enjoying the sunshine!

www.parisiantobe.com

ADRIENNE // LATE NIGHT NONSENSE www.latenightnonsense.com

My favourite product this summer has to be Model’s Own Nail Polish in Bubble gum. This bright pop of colour is perfect for taking a look from day to night in style! Wear it minimal with light and floral summer dresses for a bit of an edge or go all out with a matching slick of neon lipstick. Keep makeup simple with sun kissed cheeks, natural brows and a few coatings of mascara!

www.gemmaer.com

GILLIAN // ELEVATOR MUSIK www.elevatormusik.com

One of my favourite beauty products for summer is the NARS Illuminator. It comes in four shades; my favourite is the cult classic Orgasm, a shimmery peachy-pink colour. The Illuminators are multiuse products which can be used in a number of different ways to achieve sun kissed, summer-ready skin. For effortless, natural summer makeup, start by applying the Illuminator all over your face. The shade Orgasm might look very bright in the tube, but once blended out on the skin it just leaves a subtle golden glow. The Illuminators can also be used as more of a traditional highlighter, and they work really well to perfect skin if you’re doing makeup for a party. Start by applying your usual foundation and concealer, then dab a little bit of the Illuminator on all the parts of your face which naturally get hit by sunlight. As it’s a liquid highlighter rather than a powder, it gives a very natural glowing effect. The Illuminators are really easy to apply, and I find the best way is to use my fingers to blend the product in – so you don’t need to worry about taking extra makeup brushes with your if you’re packing for your summer holidays, and are definitely a summer essential!

JULIA // STYLONYLON www.stylonylon.com

Come the summer, I love to keep things simple and I’m always looking for the perfect all-rounder to take away on holidays. The Know-It Oil by VMV Hypoallergenics is the perfect summer product as the smell alone makes you feel like you’re permanently on holiday, and there’s something so satisfying about a pot of organic goodness that has multiple applications. What you see before you is one of nature’s best beauty offerings – a tub of 100% organic virgin coconut oil from the Philippines. First pressed (which basically means it’s as unprocessed as possible) it’s also preservative free and non-comedogenic – which means, despite its oiliness, it won’t block pores. But enough of the science-chat; what do I use it for and does it work? I’ve been using it on my hands, which are prone to dryness. I thought at first it would leave my hands a bit slick and greasy but it didn’t – actually the oil penetrated my skin and left it skin feeling softer and not so leathery. I’ve also been dabbing it on my elbows, where I have slightly rougher skin and, top tip! – I’ve been using it on top of a Shea butter cream on my legs post shaving, to further lock in the moisture. And my calves look generally more hydrated and nourished as a result. I’ve only had this pot for a little while, but there are all sorts of things I’m planning to use it for – a deep conditioning hair treatment and layered up over my night cream for some serious face nourishing. Finally, and this has to be my favourite, the oil is so pure you can use it for cooking! Use it when you’d usually use olive oil for frying things such as salmon!

BLUEBERRY MUFFINS Article by Eilidh

This is an old favourite recipe in our family entitled ‘Cathy’s Buns’ but I thought I would alter it slightly to bake some summery blueberry muffins. Using all the mixture I managed to make six large and eight mini muffins but you can probably squeeze about eight large muffins from this recipe. I’m going to be leaving home in a few weeks and

I’ll be the first to say that I’m most likely going to live off ready meals when it comes to cooking. I’m completely hopeless - I can barely even make toast. But these were so easy to bake, and if all else fails I’ll probably end up living off these blueberry muffins as a student now!

Ingredients: 4oz Self Raising Flour 4oz Caster Sugar 4oz Soft Butter or Margarine 2 Eggs Blueberries

THE RECIPE

So, it’s fairly straight forward to do. Firstly put the flour, suagr, butter and eggs in a bowl and mix them together. I prefer to mix them by hand first and then use an electric whisk. You’ll know everything is properly mixed together when the mixture is a pale yellow colour. Once this is done place a small spoonful of the mixture into some paper cases in tins. Then you may place as many blueberries as

you wish into each and add another spoonful of the mix on top. This means that the fruit will be mixed through the muffin and not just sitting at the top or bottom. Place a few more on top and you’re ready. Bake at Gas Mark 5 or 190oC for 25 minutes to 30 minutes depending on size of your muffins. This will give you time to wash up, and enjoy the smell of baked magic waft around you.

GOODBYE SPECIAL THANKS

We would like to thank everyone who supported us while we made this magazine. It was a long, hard experience but one that we learned a lot from and would gladly do it again. Thanks for putting up with us while we spent weeks shut up in our rooms working on this and being as anti-social as is humanly possible. Thank you to the Beauty Bloggers; Lillian, Adrienne, Gillian, Gemma and Julia for taking part in our ‘Ask the Professionals’ article. Thanks to Ewan McIntosh for letting us interview him about the world of Youtube and encouraging our audience to get involved with the community. And lastly, thank you so much to you for reading Issue One of DYLAN Magazine. It means so much to us that you have taken time to read through our hard work and we hope you have taken away some new things from it, whether it be a new book to read, song to listen to or if you just want to make those blueberry muffins for yourself! It really does mean everything to us that you’re here so thank you. Love, Eilidh and Maddy x
