THE RED FOREST MACHINES have been on the market for almost 50 years. The first machine for working the forest was launched way back at the beginning of the 1960s, signaling the start of our specialization in forest machine development. Now it’s time for the next stage of our evolution. “With the support of our owners, we’ll develop new products at an even faster rate – and further refine our improvement work at all stages,” Toshio explains. FACTS: KOMATSU FOREST Komatsu Forest, with its headquarters and technology center in Umeå, Sweden, has some 1,200 employees and is represented in all markets where mechanized forestry is used. Komatsu forest machines are manufactured at two plants, one in Sweden and one in the USA. Machines are sold via the company’s own sales units and independent dealers in Europe, North America, South America, Russia, Oceania, and Asia. Since 2004, Komatsu Forest AB has been owned by the Japanese company Komatsu Ltd, which was founded in 1921. In his spare time, he’s an active forest owner, managing the forest passed down through several generations. New marketing head Timo Ylänen knows what the forest has to offer and what applies when working it.
THE FOREST CLOSE TO HIS HEART FOR MANY PEOPLE, the forest is a lifelong
relationship intertwined with daily life. For some, the forest is a leisure interest, while others have the privilege of working with the forest on a daily basis. For Timo Ylänen, the forest has always been a natural part of life. ”My father was a certified forester, worked in the forest industry, and owned forest where we spent much time when I was younger. It was about working in the forest, but also about hunting, such as for elk,” explains Timo Ylänen, who is the new head of marketing, based at headquarters. THE FOREST HE has inherited is roughly in the middle of Finland. Over the years, he’s even invested in more forestland. “I enjoy going to the forest now and then, to do things like clearing or planting. Personally, I find physical work calming. You immediately see the results of your work, and it’s also good exercise,” he says. For the past six years, he’s lived with his family in Tampere. Prior to this, they spent three years living and working in the USA. 6 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2011
Timo studied to be a certified forester in Helsinki, furthering his education at the school of economics. “I knew early on that I wanted to work with the forest in some way or other. The forest has always been a part of everyday life for me, and always will be,” he says. AN UNDERSTANDING OF the different values of the forest is important when producing forest machines. The forest needs to be managed sustainably to contribute with important recreational opportunities, but it’s also necessary to work the forest in a way that makes sense economically. Timo has extensive experience of the forest machine industry. Previously, he’s worked as head of sales, for both global and European markets, and his most recent position was CEO of Komatsu Forest Oy in Finland. “Having an interest in the forest and technology outside of work provides added value. It provides a deeper commitment to the machines and the customers,” Timo explains.

CONFIDENCE AND TRUST Trust is key for much in life. With a business, you need to be able to rely on your machines and the people behind them. Brenton Yon, or Yonnie, as he’s known, has a wellearned reputation in the Australian forest industry.

BARRY AND JAMES Asher at Asher’s Logging Pty Ltd, a company that works with harvesting and hauling in the Queensland and Tumut region, only have kind words for Komatsu Forest’s Australian sales head Brenton Yon. ”He’s a good guy,” they say. ”He’s honest, straight-talking, and never lets you down.” With nine harvester teams working simultaneously, Asher’s Logging Pty Ltd needs many machines. ”We use mostly Valmet and Komatsu. We remain almost 100% loyal because they’re a reliable supplier that offers good service and values customer relations,” James Asher explains. BRENTON YON is the person he most often deals with. “We have a good relation with Yonnie and are often in contact. He regularly comes to visit to discuss matters concerning the machines,” he continues. Barry and James appreciate the fact that Brenton Yon visits in person. It gives them the opportunity to discuss industry news, new and improved products, and the most suitable solutions for their company. “He’s able to analyze what would be best
for our company, and helps by suggesting what we should do to increase our competitive edge,” says James. Rapid spare parts service is important to all machine owners, regardless of where in the world they operate. THE CENTRAL SPARE parts depot is in Sweden. “We’ve actually never had any problems with waiting for spares from Sweden. They have a well integrated system with freight companies, which means your machine is up and running again the next morning,” James tells us. Confidence and trust. That’s what it’s all about, according to James. “Cooperating with your customers is so important. It’s all about meeting customer needs.” IN ADDITION TO THE harvesting and hauling businesses, this foundation of trust, built up over many years, has enabled Asher’s Logging to open two timber yards and to start selling wooden frameworks and roof trusses. “With more than 100 employees, I know the value of business partners such as Brenton Yon,” James ends.
Barry and James Asher think that it’s important to have faith in your machine supplier. Brenton Yon is often out in the forest to meet customers and to ensure that everything is working as it should.

Since 2005, Komatsu Forest in Germany offers a central gathering point for all would-be used machine buyers from across Europe. A broad range of machines and good service comprise the young team’s recipe for success.
USED MACHINES FROM THE EXPERT KOMATSU FOREST GmbH in Germany is investing in the best service with a tightlyknit network of service workshops throughout Germany in order to offer customers rapid service and short distances to the nearest workshop. The Used Machine Center (UMC) in Germany has a different strategy. ”The central location and large range of used machines is the secret of our success,” says Thomas Hoppe, head of UMC. UMC HAS established its operations outside the German city of Chemnitz. A location that offers excellent connections 10 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2011
to buyers in neighboring countries. What’s more, Leipzig Airport is just a few miles away. ALL USED machines sold by Komatsu Forest in Germany are offered and showcased centrally by UMC. Naturally, this entails extensive costs in conjunction with transporting the machines, but such a broad offering also makes it easier to find the right machine and to compare them side by side. Thomas has known many of his customers for many years. “We place a great deal of value in perso-
nal relations with our customers. We need to know what a contractor is going to use a machine for in order to provide the best advice and to match the right machine to the right need,” Thomas explains. IF, AGAINST ALLodds, the buyer doesn’t find a suitable machine at UMC, Komatsu Forest has an international network that can help out. Via a website, the customer has access to information about all used machines stocked by all Valmet dealers throughout the world. As to be expected, UMC also offers in-

Komatsu Forest’s tightly-knit and international service network ensures that the used machine receives the best possible maintenance – regardless of where in the world the machine is to operate.
in Germany have to ensure that spares are available 52 weeks a year. There is no other alternative. Spare parts supply must work when customers are in need. Aside from customers in Germany, spares are delivered to dealers in Central Europe. A knowledgeable service team takes spare part orders online or over the phone, but there’s more to it than simply taking an order. ”With regular training, we ensure that our employees are apace with technical developments in order to provide our customers the best possible advice when they contact us for spares,” says logistics manager Heide Kräutle-Bronner. The ten employees use a specially-developed stock management system to guarantee the optimal spare parts flow. Together, the stocked parts are worth
millions of dollars. Each year, the center processes as many as 15,000 spare part deliveries. In order to guarantee maximum delivery reliability, the software makes a special backup so that all necessary information is accessible even if the software or hardware fails. THE TEAM IN VÖHRINGEN is even available on Saturdays, which means parts ordered on the weekend are received the following Monday. If, despite everything, a part is out of stock, it’s ordered immediately from the new, central spare parts depot in Sweden. “To meet customers’ needs for shorter delivery times and to better enable us to meet future demands, the central spare parts depot is located near Arlanda International Airport outside Stockholm. This enables us to deliver parts to our customers even faster,” says Heide. JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2011 11
Göran Löfgren always has technology on his mind. At work and at home. When building his hot rod, he’s taken the windshield and turnsignal lever from a forwarder. The cylinders for the suspension are from the cutting knife cylinder on a harvesting head.
Göran Löfgren loves technology. And he lives with it almost 24/7. During the day, he designs forest machines; in his spare time, he builds cars.
KOMATSU HOT ROD NOT EVERYONE gets to combine business with pleasure. Those who do often show even greater dedication and skill at work. Many people working at Komatsu Forest have an interest in technology and the forest that reaches far outside work. Göran Löfgren’s interest in technology is fed both at work and at home. Practical solutions are something he can’t help thinking about, whether the components are for a forest machine or a neat hot rod. ”I’ve always had a keen interest in technology. Ever since my childhood spent with toy construction sets, I’ve been taking things apart and building devices, machines, and engines,” Göran explains. He doesn’t really know where the interest comes from. At home on the farm in the small community of Dorotea, forests and hunting were the center of attention. Something that Göran has also carried with him into adult life. BY DAY, he works as a designer at Komatsu Forest. His specialties are hydraulics and mechanics, although he’s also been involved in the development of the new engine for the Komatsu 931.1 and the Komatsu 911.5, among other things. 12 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2011
“At work, it’s very much about finding the right technical solutions based on the users’ day-to-day needs. The design cannot simply be the smartest. It’s equally important that it’s of the right quality for the forest,” he says. He’s been a designer at Komatsu Forest since 1988. “I still find it very interesting. The machines have seen enormous development since I started, but I think technical developments are moving even faster now,” says Göran. THE PAST EIGHTEEN months, much of his spare time has been spent building a hot rod from the ground up, and he can see many similarities between working on forest machine designs and building his hot rod. “I could have chosen the easy route and bought a kit car, but instead I chose to design my own car with a CAD tool. The same software I use at work.” “For every component I’ve used in the car, I’ve started with its purpose and made calculations.” “This means that sometimes you have to start over. Just like at work,” he explains. He’s taken the components from a range of old cars. The 5-liter V8 engine comes
from a 1984 Chevrolet 305. Parts that he’s had to modify to fit the overall design. But he’s also found inspiration at work. The radiator, for example, is a remodeled intercooler, the turn-signal lever comes from a forwarder, the windshield is the rear windshield from a forwarder, and the front and rear hydraulic suspension system are made from remodeled cylinders from a harvesting head. BEFORE MAKING THE CAR, he built a quad bike with articulated steering. In order to build it from scratch, he even built his own machines, including a bending machine for steel plating and a blasting cabinet. As to whether he’s finished the car, the answer is no. “You can always make improvements. Now when I’ve started to use the car, I can see how it could be refined. For instance, I plan to build an electronic fuel injection system and to refine the leveling suspension. It’s a bit like at work. There, we are always looking for opportunities to improve the machines and harvesting heads. Sometimes based on user needs, sometimes because we designers initiate the improvements,” says Göran.

Slogans and good resolutions are not enough. The real world demands continual product development and active participation in the day-to-day operations of our customers. GOOD CUSTOMER RELATIONS “WE NOT ONLY want to only develop pro-
ducts that are well adapted to the conditions faced by the Brazilian forest industry; we also want to get to know our customers’ operations. We always strive to achieve the greatest possible uptime and to reduce the cost per cubic meter produced,” says Yasuo Takahashi, CEO of Komatsu Brazil International, KBI. In Brazil, Komatsu’s tracked excavators are often used as carriers and teamed with harvesting heads. In order to adapt these tracked harvesters to the demanding conditions of forest operations, continual improvements are made to the harvesting heads, as well as the carriers. ”The components are continually improved, in some respects based on customer suggestions, which are first thoroughly evaluated by our personnel. The aim of these continual improvements to parts and 14 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2011
components is greater reliability and better economy,” explains Sandro Soares, Customer Support Coordinator at Komatsu Forest. ONE EXAMPLE IS the continuous rotator, the development of which was tested between 2007 and 2009, prior to its global launch. The tests were conducted in Brazil with the aid of one of Komatsu’s customers, Aracruz (now Fibria), and were supervised by the company’s operative and technical departments. The continuous rotator enables the harvesting head to rotate freely without the risk of damage to the hosing, which improves efficiency and increases productivity. In addition to this, the tests showed that the rotator can reduce the risk of environmental impact, while also providing a considerable increase in the uptime achieved by the harvesting head.
JUST FOREST WENT along on a visit to one of Fibria’s harvesting plots, located in Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul. The purpose of the visit was to discuss improvements to the Clambunk product and the best way to maintain the equipment. Dialogs, discussions, and product performance tests are conducted at the operative level and the maintenance level, resulting in improvements to the equipment which increase both productivity and service access. ”Customers are very pleased with the visits from our technical teams, as their technical expertise enables them to improve the performance of the machines and equipment used. The visits also provide an opportunity to share improvements made for an individual customer with the rest of the market,” Sandro explains.

PRESENTATION: Komatsu 911.5 The new Komatsu 911.5 has a new engine with optimized combustion that results in reduced emissions and considerably lower fuel consumption – as much as 16 percent lower when compared to today’s Stage 3/Tier 3 engines. The Komatsu 911.5 is easy on the environment and easy on your finances.
NEW RED HARVESTER WITH A GREEN ENGINE STRICTER emission control requirements for diesel engines over 130 kW have been introduced in Europe and North America. The new Komatsu 911.5 has a new engine that fulfills today’s extremely tough emission control requirements. And that’s not all. Not only does the new engine guarantee compliance with the new environmental requirements, it also boasts more efficient combustion and improved fuel economy, and matches, if not improves, the good response and performance of previous engines. In order to meet the new environmental requirements, the new engine features an emission control system known as SCR, or Selective Catalytic Reduction, a technique that will be used in other markets as environmental requirements are tightened. ESSENTIALLY, THE SCR TECHNIQUE
achieves a reduction in nitrogen emissions with a catalytic converter, installed after the engine in the exhaust system, used together with a special liquid (DEF). The SCR technique provides more efficient combustion and reduces particulates, so no advanced particle filter is required. More efficient combustion does, however, increase the nitric oxide content. In order to achieve the extremely low permitted levels of nitric oxide, a urea-based and completely non-toxic liquid, DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), is added 16 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2011
to the exhaust gases before they enter the catalytic converter. The advantages of this solution are many in comparison to other emission control methods. In addition to lower fuel consumption, total running costs are reduced, with cleaner engine oil and no need for increased cooling. The Komatsu 911.5 also has a new and easily replaced ultra-high capacity air filter. Another new feature of the Komatsu 911.5 is an even better operator environment. With good visibility, air quality, and ergonomics, this cab really helps increase productivity. The cab of the 911.5 is extremely spacious. A large air intake and an extra pre-filter on the air conditioning ensure this cab has great air. And of course, ECC is standard on the Komatsu 911.5. With the new engine, the machine is even quieter as the catalytic converter helps reduce noise. THE KOMATSU 911.5 also has a sturdier and stronger rear axle with integrated mounts for the stabilization cylinders and integrated brake lines. The boom is available as a 10 or 11 meter (32.8 or 36 foot) model and is equipped with soft-sealed couplings, also known as ORFS seals. ORFS seals are used throughout the machine and are good for both the environment (leaks are minimized) and productivity (reliability is improved).

Major improvements often coincide with new models and new products, but between such launches, work is always underway to continually improve our machines. Work based on the ideas of the Kaizen concept. Kaizen is Japanese, with Kai meaning change and Zen meaning continual improvement. The customer is always central in Kaizen, and the idea is to give the customer what they really want and need. The Kaizen concept unites experience from the Japanese industry’s approach to quality with a thorough understanding of the demands of the forest and technical curiosity. Once
the products have been launched, changes and refinements – both large and small – are regularly made to the products. This often entails many small improvements, which together ensure that our products are continually improved. Some improvements provide a certain model with specific characteristics; others are more general and improve the quality of all machines. PRESENTATION: Komatsu 931.1 The Komatsu 931.1 provides the perfect combination of strength and flexibility. One important explanation is the new engine, which delivers more efficient combustion and improved fuel economy, as well as the same good response and performance as previous engines. Fuel savings have been measured at 16 percent, compared to today’s engines, although naturally the actual saving depends on a number of factors.
MEETS REQUIREMENTS THE KOMATSU 931.1 has a new engine that meets the new strict environmental requirements for diesel engines over 130 kW introduced at the start of the year in Europe and North America. In order to meet the new environmental requirements, the new engine features an emission control system known as SCR, or Selective Catalytic Reduction, a technique that will be used in other markets as environmental requirements are tightened. Essentially, the SCR technique achieves a reduction in nitrogen emissions by instal-
ling a catalytic converter after the engine in the exhaust system and adding a special liquid to the exhaust system. The new engines are optimized based on maximum fuel combustion for the best possible efficiency, which reduces the number of particulates to a very low level. As such, no expensive particle filter is needed. However, one effect of the more efficient combustion process is an increase in the nitric oxide content of the exhaust fumes. mit only extremely low levels of nitric oxide. Consequently, a liquid, DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), a urea-based and completely nontoxic substance, is automatically added to the exhaust gases before they enter the catalytic converter. WITH THE NEW engine and emission control system, the machine’s total environmental impact is substantially reduced while also providing considerably lower fuel consumption and lower total running costs thanks to cleaner oil and no need for increased cooling. The Komatsu 931.1 has a sturdy rear axle with integrated hose routing, which ensures great reliability, as does the use of softsealed couplings throughout the machine to minimize oil leaks. The soft-sealed couplings are based on two flat surfaces, one of which is fitted with an o-ring that creates a seal against the flat surface of the opposing coupling section. The Komatsu 931.1 offers an extremely high-performance work environment. The spacious, full-circle slewing, and leveling cab is the quietest on the market with its direct drive slew transmission. With the new engine, the machine is also even quieter as the catalytic converter helps reduce noise.
The engine is the big news when it comes to the Komatsu 931.1, but this new harvester boasts a long list of other new and interesting features. JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2011 21
PRESENTATION: Komatsu 340 The new Komatsu 340 thinning head is designed for challenging work in dense stands and fills the gap between the two top-selling Komatsu 330 and Komatsu 350.1 heads.
COMPLETELY NEW THINNING HEAD THE KOMATSU 340 really comes into its
own in stands with a DBH of 4-10” (10-25 cm) and in dense, challenging thinning assignments. This head combines low weight, intelligent design, and a compact size with high performance. Built using only robust components, this head is designed to maintain a continuously high production rate. It also has a compact hydraulic valve for a minimum of hosing, and all hose connections feature solid protection. The head also has moving connectors for hose feeds, and all connections use ORFS seals. This type of soft hydraulic seal, using O rings instead of contact between two metal surfaces, is favorable in terms of environmental impact as it minimizes leakage. It’s also favorable in terms of production, as the head’s reliability is increased. What’s more, with ORFS seals, a connector can be undone and retightened without compromising the seal. Another example of the focus on enhanced productivity is the bar feed, located inside a fully-integrated unit that is both compact and robust. THE HEAD IS also available with an optional multi-tree accumulator, which makes it possible to process several trunks simultaneously, which increases processed volumes considerably, especially in thin stands. 22 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2011
The multi-tree accumulator function is integrated with the link, a unique feature for a head of this size providing both improved functionality and lower weight. ALTHOUGH the Komatsu 340 is optimized for thinning, it can also be used to harvest considerably broader trees. The unique feed roller mounts automatically angle the feed rollers to suit the trunk size, thereby providing the precise lifting power that’s needed. The feed rollers, which are available in steel and steel/rubber, feature proportional pressure, ensuring a gentle feed. The delimbing knives have long cutting edges
for effective delimbing and closely follow the trunk. Moreover, the head has a moving upper knife that, together with the other functions, such as the two-wheel feed, provides a minimum of timber damage even in forest stands with crooked trunks. The tilt link is also fully adapted to the Komatsu rotator, which has a simple and robust design with a lower build height than usually found on the market. The head is also available with both color marking and stump handling. For reliable and durable operation, the paint tanks are located inside the tilt link.

In order to achieve the climate goals established by the UN’s climate convention, UNFCCC, increasingly strict restrictions are being placed on emissions. This demands more efficient engines. This is why the new Komatsu 911.5 and 931.1 feature a new engine with optimized combustion that results in, among other things, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and lower fuel consumption (by as much as 16 percent), and can be supplemented with the most effective nitric oxide emission control system on the market.
NEW ENGINE WITH E3-POWER
KOMATSU FOREST IS active in forestry throughout the world, and helping improve the environment is of great importance to the company. As such, it’s also important to remain at the absolute forefront of the development of greener forest machines. At the start of the year, January 1, 2011, the world’s strictest emission control requirements for diesel engines came into force in Europe and North America. They entail an 85-percent reduction in nitric oxides and a 97-percent reduction in particulates compared to the levels that applied in 1996. In order to achieve this, a new engine concept was developed, known as E3-Power, with the three Es standing for Energy, Economy, and Ecology. All three are essential to achieving the final goal, an engine that is good for the environment and its owner. One of the prerequisites for succeeding was to develop an engine that is more efficient than existing engines. With a more efficient engine, in which the combustion process is optimized to reduce particulates that otherwise have to be filtered, we resolve part of the basic problem. What’s more, a more efficient engine reduces fuel consumption, which has been high on the wish list of many machine owners as fuel prices have risen. FIELD MEASUREMENTS UNDER normal conditions have shown that fuel savings can reach 16 percent compared to Stage 3/Tier 3 models. Naturally, the reduction in 24 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2011
fuel consumption cannot be guaranteed under all possible conditions considering the wide range of factors involved, but the field test was conducted under realistic conditions. ANOTHER REQUIREMENT has been to retain engine performance and response. Poorer performance and poorer response would result in lower productivity and reduced profitability. A further challenge has been to adapt the emission control method to the special requirements of forest machines. Unlike road vehicles, such as trucks, constant engine speeds are not viable. Instead, forest machines work with rapid changes in engine speed and torque. As such, Komatsu Forest has further developed and refined the solutions created for road vehicles. IT WAS WITH THESE challenges in mind that work was begun on a new emission control system, and today that work is complete. The result is an engine that offers more efficient combustion, provides better fuel economy than existing engines, and delivers good response and performance that at least matches previous engines. It is also built to suit all markets – no compromises have been made in adapting the engine to the new emission control requirements. The engine will also provide a starting point when stricter emission control requirements are introduced outside Europe and North America. ONE OF THE MANY methods employ-
ed to optimize the combustion process has been to use common rail technology with even higher fuel injection pressure for more accurate fuel injection. In order to meet the strictest emission control requirements, further steps are needed. The engine provides the foundation and has now been supplemented with something known as SCR, or Selective Catalytic Reduction. Essentially, this entails a reduction in nitrogen emissions by including a catalytic converter in the exhaust system, installed after the engine. One advantage of efficient combustion is a reduction in particulates, so no advanced particle filter is required. On the downside, more efficient combustion increases nitric oxide content, which is why this additional emission control is needed. In order to achieve the extremely low permitted levels of nitric oxide, a urea-based and completely non-toxic substance is added to the exhaust gases before they enter the catalytic converter to further optimize emission control. THE ADVANTAGES of this solution are many in comparison with other emission control methods. Aside from lower fuel consumption even in comparison with today’s low levels, we get lower operating costs, there’s no need for increased cooling, and emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are reduced. The machine is also made quieter as the catalytic converter helps reduce noise.
With the efďŹ cient combustion offered by the new engine, particulates have been reduced to a minimum. All that remains is to deal with the nitrogen oxides. The SCR system used in the new engines of the Komatsu 911.5 and 931.1 injects a liquid into the exhaust fumes before they pass through the catalytic converter. Once inside the catalytic converter, the liquid reacts with the harmful nitrogen oxides in the exhaust fumes, forming mostly water and low levels of nitrogen. The additive, called DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), is mostly comprised of water and is safe to handle and does not harm the environment. The liquid is stored in a separate tank near the diesel tank and can be topped up when the machine is refueled. Not only does the new engine have reduced emissions of particulates and the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, it also boasts fuel consumption reduced by almost 16 percent.

PRESENTATION: MaxiXplorer Head MaxiXplorer Head is a new control system for harvesting heads fitted to excavators. This advanced system is easy to install and easy to use.

tem has been developed for harvesting heads mounted on simple excavators and similar carriers mostly used for harvesting on plantations in Brazil, Australia, and Chile, in coniferous forests in Russia and North America, and in Asia. Although MaxiXplorer Head is packed with advanced functions, the system is marked by simplicity. It’s easy to fit and install and easy to use. Settings are quickly navigated and altered using a trackball on the wireless ergonomic keyboard, while processing is controlled using a choice of two different types of ergonomic joysticks. Essentially, MaxiXplorer Head has all the important functions found in the control system for our wheeled forest machines. Functions such as the sophisticated antislip system, optimized cross-cutting, and the best database management system on the market for production data, trunk data, and operation reports. The system includes
a neat tool for pricelists that makes it easy to create cross-cutting instructions to optimize cross-cutting. The system accepts unlimited numbers of assortments, as well as length and diameter classes. OTHER EXAMPLES of useful functions available with MaxiXplorer Head include multi-tree accumulation, rapid switches between the top and bottom saws, automatic tilting after the last log, registration of felled trees that haven’t been processed, highlighting in the production file of trees harvested as forest residue, the ability to manually select the length for cuts, and hydraulic pressure and temperature monitoring. SPEED AND PRECISION ARE KEY To be able to get the exact spare part you urgently need, to get it quickly, and to not need to check several different sources. These are three important factors highly valued by forest machine owners when it comes to spare parts service. Just over two years ago, Komatsu Forest’s central spare parts depot was relocated to Järfälla, close to Arlanda, Stockholm’s
international airport. All to better meet the global need for fast spare part deliveries. About 20,000 items. That’s the current range of active spare parts. About 9,000 of them are distributed continually. Every day, seven or eight express deliveries are sent by air, sea, and land. ”The latest additions to our stocked items are lubricants and saw equipment, which we’ve now made available via the global logistics structure,” says Jörgen Nilsson, Head of Sales at Parts Business. ”What’s more, the range of consumables is increasing all the time.” EVEN WITH LATE cutoff times for spare part orders, almost all European orders are delivered within 24 hours. “Today, 99.95 percent of orders are cor-
rect and 99.91 percent are delivered within the agreed time for express orders, but naturally we are always working to find logistics solutions that increase efficiency and reliability,” Jörgen continues. “We know how important it is to forest machine owners.” NOW WHEN THE machines are renamed Komatsu, so are the spares. The spare part range will continue to be marketed as ProSelect, but under the Komatsu brand. For customers, there isn’t really any difference other than a gradual change of packaging and the like, which means that throughout a transition period, spares may be labeled Komatsu or Valmet. All Valmet machine owners will continue to be guaranteed spare parts for their machines.

BEST EVER Canadian-born Rejean Bedard knows his Komatsu forest machines. His company mainly operates in the USA, but Rejean’s work regularly takes him back across the border to Canada. His schedule and harvesting volumes are always demanding, which explains why he’s bought twelve Komatsu machines over the past six years. Rejean Bedard founded his company in 1986. Today, he has 24 employees and a machine line up that includes forest machines and other vehicles. Thanks to the CTL models, he has sufficient flexibility to handle
any kind of job. He has two bunchers, a 445 and a 430 FXL, two forwarders, an 890.3 and an 860.4, and four harvesters, a 911.3, two 911.4s, and his newest machine, a 931 with a 365 harvesting head. ”The forests in the north-east can be really demanding, with everything from mountain slopes to swamps. When we’re working in forests with massive conifers, the 911 can feel a little too small. That’s why I like the 931 – it’s bigger but not too big. It simply offers better stability, so it can handle heavy timber. And with the 365 harvesting head, I can even use it for hardwood if necessary. I get the feeling it can cope with anything without difficulty. We’ve found a solution that suits us perfectly, and with the 10-meter reach, it’s also fast and effective when we’re thinning stands of small diameter trees,” Rejean explains. Rejean is very impressed with the 931’s uphill performance and its bogie. A combination that provides fantastic maneuverability.
”The cab is very comfortable. There’s plenty of space and the leveling is perfect. The boom always rotates with the operator, so you always have a good view of what you’re working on,” says Rejean, and continues. ”I’m no computer genius, but even I find MaxiXplorer very easy to use, and I can adjust things such as the delimbing knife pressure while working. We work in shifts, so the operator programs the machine to start up in the morning before he arrives, to warm up. Then he simply jumps in the cab and gets working.” Rejean says the machines just keep getting better and better. ”I’ve bought many machines, but in my opinion, the 931 with a 365 harvesting head is the best machine Komatsu has ever made. I might think differently once I’ve worked with it for 4,000–5,000 hours, but at the moment it works wonderfully.”

Among other things, you can see this red machine that was standing in Culloden Forest near Inverness, northern Scotland.
Maybe that’s what Dalfors Skogsentreprenad in Sweden were thinking when they decorated their forwarders with Baloo from the Jungle Book. The company is owned and run by brothers Lennart and Lars-Olov Hansson.
Gustavo Castro from Brazil is a true forest machine fan. Since 1999, when he saw his first forest machine, he’s been obsessed, and the Valmet 801 Combi is his favorite. He’s collected more than 300 brochures, has over 80 DVD films, and then some 3,000 photos that he’s taken. This photo shows a replica of a Valmet 475EXL that he has in his collection, built entirely from Lego.
