Step by step New products, a new brand name and a new quality standard among forest machines has taken us a few steps further on our journey to become the best partner for every forest machine owner. In all of our work we strive to create a win-win situation with our customers and our dealers. One way is to constantly develop our products. In this issue of Just Forest magazine you can read about the new forwarder Komatsu 895, one of the largest forwarders on the market. It will be a complement to the previous release of the mid size models Komatsu 865 and Komatsu 855 with the new cabin, engines and transmission. I would like to welcome LogMax as a new member fo Komatsu Forest family. LogMax is a excellent company with well-known products for high realibility and low maintenance cost. Our plan is to keep LogMax as an independent company with its current network unchanged for coming years. MaxiFleet is a new system that we have started to offer our customers in Europe. This is a way to help machine owners to be more efficient in their operation. MaxiFleet is the world’s first web-based Fleet Management System for forestry machinery. The system makes it possible, from your office computer or mobile phone, to locate all machines, check each machine status, monitoring production and machine information, coordinate the entire machine fleet and perform proactive service.
Another way to support our customers work is to reinforce the customer service support. We think that more preventive maintenance gives more uptime. Of course, we will always be there when emergency service is required, but with more proactive maintenance we know that the utilization rate will be higher, leading to higher productivity. Our most profitable customers already use proactive maintenance with good result. Proactive servicing and maintenance is important, especially in markets where the distances are long and conditions to provide fast service is more difficult. Russia is one such example and also interesting from other aspects. Russia has the world’s largest forest stock. Our company growth in Russia has been significant during the last years and I expect that our sales in Russia will grow even more in the coming years. Russia is now one of our most important CTL-markets. Therefore we will put even more resources to develop the sales and service support in Russia. stronger and smarter The Komatsu 895 is made to forward productively and at low running costs. One important reason is a completely new transmission system that automatically adapts to the load, any inclines, and all obstacles in the forest. Another is the new frame design, and a third is the more efficient bunk solution. These improvements, together with the new crane, ensure the most productive forwarding possible. The Komatsu 895 has a completely new frame design specially developed
for modern forwarders with a load capacity of 20 tons. The robust frame is strong, durable, and well tested at the new test center. The new design is modular, which provides greater opportunities to adapt the frame to different needs. The forward frame section is available with or without a front blade, and the rear section comes in four different lengths. The new design also includes a new frame-to-axle interface. This more inte-
grated design enables the frames and axles to interact better. As a consequence, the frames and axles can more effectively deal with the forces created by the load and the terrain. The result is improved quality and ever greater reliability. Another new feature is the design of the underside of the frame, which is boatshaped to improve mobility in difficult terrain. The boat shape prevents the forwarder from catching on high rocks and stumps, allowing it to simply glide over them. Hightensile steel is used for the deflective profile
on the underside to ensure durability. The Komatsu 895 is – quite simply – designed to climb over stumps and rocks. The new hydrostatic transmission system and the new diesel engine’s characteristics are optimized to jointly provide maximum traction. This means that the system automatically adjusts the traction and

engine's performance and to improve the new forwarder's handling in steep terrain, the transmission can further increase traction when the going gets tough and speed drops. This enables the forwarder to climb obstacles with considerable ease compared to machines with the previous generation of hydrostatic transmission systems.
With a new frame design and a new transmission system, all the right boxes are ticked for forwarding big and heavy loads. The bunk on the Komatsu 895 is available in several different variants, with wider bunks, separating supports, and LoadFlex as options, ensuring the ability to carry 20 tons under all circumstances.

The Komatsu 895 has a 259 hp 6-cylinder engine specially adapted for a 20ton load capacity and forest conditions. The engine uses well-proven common
rail technology with even higher fuel injection pressure and more exact fuel injection. With a new fuel injector, fuel injection is both faster and more accurate, which provides higher engine power, higher torque, reduced emissions, and reduced fuel consumption. Add to this the new engine's optimized combustion chamber and the result is an engine with a combustion process of maximum efficiency when power is most
needed. The new engine technology enables maximum power utilization from the engine. The Komatsu 895 is both strong and fuel efficient. Maximum power is 259 hp (193 kW DIN) at 1,700 rpm and maximum torque is 811 lbf-ft (1,100 Nm) at 1,200-1,700 rpm. With the more efficient combustion offered by the new engine, particulates have been reduced to a minimum. However, in order to fulfill environmental requirements in Europe and North America, nitrogen oxide emissions must also be reduced. In markets where the new environmental requirements have been introduced, the new engine is equipped with an emission control system called SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction).

Cab with high comfort Cab comfort is of the utmost importance if an operator is to cope with the demands of working in the forest. Well developed ergonomics, plenty of space, good air quality, less vibrations, and low noise levels are important factors for a good operator environment. The Komatsu 895 has all this. What's more, the cab has several other new features that contribute to comfort that's out of the ordinary. Even from the outside, it's clear that the cab has a completely new design with a stronger structure. On the inside, this means more space for the operator in all directions. The interior volume is increased by 21 percent compared to cabs from the previous forwarder generation. The new forwarders also have greatly improved visibility. With larger windows all around the cab, visibility is better in every direction. As the cab is taller and the design has been refined, upward visibility has been improved considerably. Side visibility has also been improved by, for example, moving the side supports back and refining their design.
The Komatsu 895 has an ergonomically designed seat developed exclusively for forest machines. The seat is easily adjusted for the most ergonomic work position and can be locked at any angle in the range 0-220 degrees. Noise from the engine compartment is quieter in the cab. This has been achieved by, for example, fitting openings into the cab, such as for cables, with seals to prevent open channels for noise. A noise shield is now fitted between the engine and the cab to prevent engine noise propagating into the cab. We can add to this a more pleasant sound from the new engine and a fan controller that automatically regulates the speed of the oil cooling
fan as needed. With a new integrated air filter, even the quality of air purification has been improved. In order to further increase comfort, the cab has more and improved storage spaces with well-considered placements and functions. A new smart radio is a comfort requested by operators. The new radio has, for example, Bluetooth and handsfree functionality. Now it's easy to wirelessly connect a smartphone to the radio in order, for example, to stream music or audio books. If the phone rings, the radio automatically fades so the operator can answer. JUST FOREST NO 1 2 • 2011 2012 9
PRESENTATION: Komatsu Comfort Ride The large support area and four-point suspension system provides balanced damping and gentle rocking.
Comfort fit for a king Komatsu Comfort Ride. That’s the name of the new cab suspension that improves operator comfort with less vibrations, fewer jolts, and gentle rocking. Visibility is also improved. When the forwarder is started, the
operator presses a button to activate the cab suspension, which then raises the cab. When the forwarder crosses uneven terrain, the four cylinders even out the bumps by always striving to remain in the middle. Not only does this improve comfort, it also enables increased driving speed. Komatsu Comfort Ride is especially effective on slopes as it compensates for shifts in the center of gravity. Damped cab suspension effectively reduces the vibrations and bumps caused by uneven terrain and large rocks and tree stumps. Cab suspension softens jolts as the suspension does not bottom out. Add to this a certain amount of horizontal compensation in the direction of travel and you have gentler rocking. Komatsu Comfort Ride has an underlying construction comprised of two frames, one on top of the other. The frames are joined by four hydraulic cylinders, one in each corner, with electronically controlled flows. This four-point suspension creates long and free movements in the suspension compared to other designs. The cylinders’ long 10 JUST FOREST NO 2 • 2012 10 JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2011
travel provides good dampening, allowing the suspension to absorb the energy well, making it less likely for a cylinder to bottom out compared to designs with shorter travel. The cylinders also feature well-protected remote position sensors, enabling the suspension to be set in the desired position, such as the mid position for optimal dampening performance or the max position for improved visibility when unloading. Another advantage is the large support area created by a four-point suspension, which provides balanced suspension with the center of gravity always within the support area. Rocking movements are much gentler compared to, for example, three-point suspension. A hydraulic stabilizer also prevents the cab from rolling from side to side as much. Komatsu Comfort Ride provides safe
and secure cab suspension. Should an accident occur, the sturdy ROPS system keeps the cab safe. An integrated lock function secures the cab to the frame during service and trailer transport. The cab can be tilted electronically just as usual, and the addition of cab suspension provides even easier service point access. The guard plates on the right side of the cab automatically fold away and do not risk touching the wheels when the cab is tilted. Komatsu Comfort Ride is integrated with MaxiXplorer, enabling function status to be displayed directly on the operating screen. MaxiXplorer also generates an alarm if any of the position sensors fail.

Australia
Two extreme forest machines Komatsu Forest Pty Ltd introduced two new purpose built forestry swing machines at the 2012 AusTimber show in Mt Gambier South Australia; the PC300FX and PC400FX “Forest Xtreme”. The driving force behind the FX project was Forest Xtreme project was Brett Jones, General Manager for Komatsu Forest Pty Ltd. According to Brett, the concept behind this project was need for a replacement of the discontinued large tail swing Valmet 475 feller buncher/harvester which was a popular machine in Australia and New Zealand. Brett wanted to develop a specialized purpose built swing machine designed for Australian harvesting applications with the full support of Komatsu Ltd in Japan. The Forest Xtreme name was used to identify the special nature of these machines. While the unveiling of the Forest Xtreme range attracted the attention of the contractors at AusTimber, - it was the appearance and demonstration of the PC300FX that was the real show surprise. The key to FX project development was to design and build a forestry machine that was as good as anything produced at a factory level. The Forest Xtreme model was specifically developed as a purpose built machine for Australian and New Zealand forestry needs. The two machines started off as a Komatsu PC300LC-8 and PC400LC-8 excavators. The specialization process involved a high/wide variable gauge track frame, the cab is then changed over to a specialized purpose built forest-

ry version with a tall front windscreen and high angled rooflines for improved vision. A reengineered hydraulic system provides controlled flows and pressures for a wide variety of harvesting attachments , specific attention was paid to the hydraulic cooling capacity to maintain a good operating temperature, especially important for our hot Australian conditions. The need for longer operation between refuelling drove development for a larger fuel tank providing up to two days operation. The new fuel tank increased the fuel capacity to 1150 litres. Improved service access and protection comes from a heavyduty rear tilting gullwing. To safe guard this machine 110 litre Wormald fire suppression system was installed. Other major features include; hydraulic oil low level / temperature sensor that alarms in the cabin, electric fill pump for the hydraulic oil with an electric tank venting system; reversing hydraulic cooling and engine cooling fans; swing-out air intake screens; and thorough sealing of the canopy around the base of the boom to keep debris out. The Feller Buncher and Harvester booms are specifically designed for severe applications while providing an overall reach of approx. 10m. According to Brett; “The scope of this

project was not simple or taken lightly, we did our research. To receive Komatsu approval for the extensive product changes we were required to present proposed product changes to Komatsu Forest management in Japan and the United States to obtain approval for this project.” Brett continues; “The Komatsu engineers were more than a little surprised after hearing what our intentions were for the Forest Xtreme package. They were amazed we would even attempt an engineering project of this size. We went through this very formal process because it was very important to maintain the full support of the factory and convince them the overall outcome would be worth it.” JUST FOREST NO 1 2 • 2011 2012 13
Germany
The Keck brothers use six red machines in their operation.
12 million cubic feet in 15 minutes Brothers Frank and Udo Keck are the third generation in the German family business Keck that works with forestry in Schwarzwald, southwest Germany. On June 30, a storm passed no more than 3 miles (5 km) from their head office in Baiersbronn-Tonbach, felling about 12 million cubic feet (350,000 cubic meters) of forest. “The entire thing was over in 15 minutes,” says Udo Keck. Udo Keck looks out over the windthrown
forest. All tree species were affected, and in some parts of the plot they weren’t felled but snapped. The innate power of the storm has very clearly left its mark. At the time of writing, most of the company’s ten forest machines are busy in the windthrown forest. The company was founded way back in the 1950s, and at that time, felled timber was transported from the forests using oxen. About 20 years later, the first tractors took over this task. The two brothers started working in the 14 JUST FOREST NO 12 • 2011 2012
family business in 1988. Four years later, they bought their first forwarder, a ”black” 840. This was followed by more Valmet machines. Today, in addition to the two harvesters – a 941 and a 911.3 – they also use two skidders to gather timber. All in all, four forwarders are used to gather timber. With one exception, all machines in the 840.3, 860.1, 860.3, and 860.4 model series are equipped with the Fast Change System. Komatsu Forest is the only company in
Germany to offer this system; a system that enables the bunk to be switched for a clamshell grapple in a few minutes. The operator doesn’t even have to leave the cab to change tools. The bunk or clamshell grapple is connected to the machine electrohydraulically from the driver’s seat, with automatic connection of the integrated electric and hydraulic interfaces. Naturally, all hoses and cables are routed so as to be protected by the chassis, minimizing the risk of hose and cable failures.
A huge job. The extent of the damage after a 15-minute storm.
“This system is clearly a wise investment for us, as we use our forwarders for full length harvesting about 60 percent of the time,” says Udo. The trees, which in some cases have a breast height diameter of 28 inches (70 cm) or more, are often felled manually by chainsaw. If ground conditions prevent the harvester from reaching the trees, they must be lowered to the crane zone using a cable winch. A very costly and time-consuming task. Handcutters are still working with chainsaws in the windthrown forest. These forest workers cut the stumps of the windthrown timber at the rootstock so the harvester can grip and process them. Such work demands maximum concentration as windthrown trees are often under great tension and risk flying up uncontrollably when sawed. The “stump cutter” in this area is Dominik Walz, who together with his colleague in the harvester comprises one work team in the windthrown forest. The harvester is a 911.3 operated by Thomas Wölfle, who has worked for the
In just a few minutes, the bunk can be switched for a clamshell grapple.
company since the storm before last, “Lothar”, hit in 1999. He maneuvers the harvester skillfully in the difficult terrain. He most appreciates the rotatable cab. “It means you always have the head in view, right in front of you,” says Thomas. The team from Keck normally work within an area with a radius of 75 miles (120 km). The machines are moved using the company’s trailer. Frank Keck is working with the harvester located two valleys away, the company’s Valmet 941. Not in windthrown forest, but on a regular harvesting assignment. The spruce, which have a breast height diameter of 12-16 inches (30-40 cm), are an easy match for the 370.2 head. Frank fully relies on the stability of Komatsu Forest’s flagship machine. “This machine stands stable on the ground even without tracks,” states Frank. In addition to the two owners, Sandra Braun and Sabine Keck also work at the office. Aside from drawing up invoices and tenders, they are even responsible for all other administration at the company, which
fells an average of about 1,765,000 cubic feet (50,000 cubic meters) of timber each year. “We’re a family business. Our flexible organization enables us to respond quickly no matter what happens.” So it was no surprise that the Keck brothers were already sitting in their machines the very same night, just two hours after the storm, busy with the initial clean up work. As well as highways and access roads, even railways needed to be cleared of windthrown timber otherwise the entire rail system would’ve been brought to a standstill. Although the trains were already running on time the next day thanks to the two brothers’ quick work, there is still no end in sight to efforts to clear the windthrown timber. The clearing up is expected to reach completion in the fall of 2013. Then it remains to be seen whether natural rejuvenation is sufficient to reforest the cleared areas, otherwise this could be yet another assignment for the Keck family business – as the two brothers also provide forest plantation services.

New model brought about switch The Komatsu 855 was the reason contractor Roger Carlsson switched from green to red machines. ”It was very apparent the Komatsu 855 was a completely new model with many new features. This made it an interesting proposition,” says Roger Carlsson of RS Skogsentreprenad. Roger Carlsson runs the company RS Skogsentreprenad, which is based in Örsundsbro about 50 miles (80 km) northwest of Stockholm. He founded his business in 1989 when he and his brother were offered the opportunity to buy a machine from their employer. Today, Roger has four machines and nine employees. Most of their work involves thinning and lighter final logging on assignment for Uppsala Skogsförvaltning and Stora Enso. RS Skogsentreprenad has chosen to switch from green machines to Komatsu. 16 JUST FOREST NO 12 • 2011 2012
”At the moment, we have two groups working two shifts,” says Roger. When RS Skogsentreprenad switched machine brand, four new Komatsu machines were ordered at once. One group works solely with thinning and comprises a Komatsu 840TX and a Komatsu 901TX. The other group works with thinning, but also lighter final logging. ”For this we’ve bought a Komatsu 911.5 and the new Komatsu 855 forwarder. They’re suitable for both thinning and lighter final logging,” he explains.
The Komatsu 855, together with the Komatsu 865, is the latest addition to the forwarder series. The new 855 was delivered to Roger at the beginning of September. “I find the new model very interesting, with many new features. That’s why I decided to invest in a Komatsu 855.” And, after about 400 hours of operation, he’s very pleased with his decision. “I find the cab a real lift. Visibility is very good all round and you can see much closer to the machine, which is particularly important when we’re thinning and space can be a bit tight at times,” Roger explains. Another new feature of the Komatsu 855 is the new transmission system, which provides better traction than previous models. “Even though we haven’t worked in any extreme terrain, we’ve noticed that it’s powerful and easily maneuvered,” he says.

”The handling is just fantastic” Swedish contractor Lars-Anders Nilsson is truly impressed with how the bogie of the new Komatsu 901TX.1 handles. He’s been operating this thinning expert since March. ”I’m almost shocked at how smoothly it handles,” says Lars-Anders. 18 JUST FOREST NO 12 • 2011 2012
Lars-Anders Nilsson runs the forest machine company NH Skogsentreprenad together with Bernt Hermansson. The company is located in Vindeln, northern Sweden. In total, 16 people work at the company, which has three machine groups and an extra forwarder. For harvesting, they’ve used the Komatsu 911 for many years, but in March they took delivery of a new Komatsu 901TX.1. ”If I compare it with the 911, then I think our new Komatsu 901TX.1 is considerably more fuel efficient, even if I can’t provide any exact figures,” says Lars-Anders. Komatsu’s new E3 Power engine uses SCR technology for effective emission control. This means not only considerably lower emissions, but also an optimized combustion process, which results in low fuel consumption. ”What’s more, the diesel odor is completely gone and the noise level has dropped, which is perfect in terms of work environment considerations,” says LarsAnders. However, what has most impressed Lars-Anders is the Komatsu 901TX.1’s new bogie concept, Komatsu Comfort Bogie. ”The handling is just fantastic,” he says. ”I’m almost shocked at how smoothly it moves and how stable it is.” A bogie that rises in rocky or hilly terrain provides a ride that feels wobbly and insecure. The bogie concept on the Komatsu 901TX.1 makes it a flexible harvester with handling characteristics that enable it to cross even demanding terrain without issue. What’s more, ground pressure is lower, an important consideration when thinning. “I haven’t seen any tendencies for the bogie to rise, even though I’ve been using it without tracks,” says Lars-Anders. NH Skogsentreprenad has mostly used its Komatsu 901TX.1 for lighter thinning. The head is a Komatsu 340. “The head has worked very well, aside from a single hose failure,” he says.

”Uses very little fuel”
Magnus Björk is a Swedish forest machine contractor who has been using the Komatsu 901TX.1 since February. One thing he quickly concluded is that the harvester is fuel efficient. ”It uses very little fuel,” says Magnus. Magnus Björk’s company M Björks Sk-
ogstjänst is based in Ljusdal, located roughly in the middle of Sweden. In December 2011, a heavy storm tore through the Nordic countries Norway, Sweden, and Finland. In Sweden alone, almost 140 million cubic feet (four million cubic meters) of forest were windthrown. ”Just after we got our new Komatsu 901TX.1 in February this year, there was great demand to deal with windthrown timber from the storm, so our new harvester has mostly been doing just that,” Magnus Björk explains. If the storm hadn’t come, the plan was to use the thinning expert for thinning. The forest company for which Magnus works has flagged for an increased need for thinning. ”During this time, I’ve found the machine to be fuel efficient. Just how efficient is a little difficult to say because it’s harvested a great variety of stem diameters,” says Magnus. Magnus is pleased with the new E3 Power engine, which features SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) emission control tech-
nology. This works by injecting a liquid into the exhaust fumes before they pass through the catalytic converter. The added liquid, known as DEF
(Diesel Exhaust Fluid), is stored in a separate tank near the diesel tank and can be topped up when the machine is refueled. Keeping emission control outside the engine enables the combustion process to be made as effective as possible. “The handling has also worked without a fault, and since the harvester uses less fuel I’m happy to take the extra few seconds involved in handling the DEF,” says Magnus. The Komatsu 901TX.1 even features a new bogie concept. “The handling is quite unbelievable”, states Magnus.

South America
fast growing forest economies South America is today one of the most interesting markets for forest machines. In Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Brazil in particular the forestry industry is growing quickly, creating huge demands for raw material. In Brazil, something began to happen in the late 1970’s. Fast-growing forest plantations of pine and eucalyptus were built and a modern forest industry took shape. Today, Brazil has grown to be one of the major forest nations with rapidly growing production forests.
In Brazil, 100 percent of the pulp and paper production originates in planted eucalyptus and pine forests. Plantation cultures are harvested for industrial use. After harvesting, new trees are planted, which then are harvested repeatedly in continuos process. In Brazil, it takes about seven years before grown eucalyptus trees can be harvested. Plantation technology has developed rapidly. Much research has focused on genetic improvement of species, with the aim to increasing the productivity of planted forests to optimise the use of planted areas. Today, one hectare eucalyptus gives up to ten tons of pulp. This means that a pulp and paper industry with production capacity of one million tonnes of pulp requires plantings in the order of 100,000 hectares. The Brazilian forest sector is one of the 20 JUST FOREST NO 12 • 2011 2012
most developed and competitive in the world. The country has a total of 6.3 million hectares, according to the Brazilian Association of Planted Forest Producers (ABRAF). About a third of this, 2,2 million hectares are plantations for pulp and paper industry. Uruguay has 17.6 million hectares and 3.5 million habitants, but it has also fast growing forestry industry. Uruguay consists mainly of grassland and has about 4.3 million acres (1.75 million hectares) of forest, more than half (around 900,000 hectares) of which comprises plantations which are primarily intended to supply the pulp industry, according to an audit compiled by the ministry of agriculture with support from the UN. 250,000 hectares are pinus and 650,000 hectares are eucalyptus. To expand, the business sector has been
opened for large-scale afforestation and a detailed plan mapped out some 3.5 million hectares as suitable for forest. It has welcomed foreign timber companies, who expected to accrue to both capital and expertise. In Argentina native forests are about 36 million hectares, representing 15% of the national territory, while implanted forests only occupy about 800,000 hectares. In Chile 45% of territory corresponds to soil suitability for forest, according to the results of a study. The forests cover an area of 15.6 million hectares, representing 20.7% of the surface of the country. The rest of the territory is dominated by deserts (bare areas), with 32.7% and grasslands and scrub, with 27.1%. Native forests in Chile covers an area of
Facts: Eucalyptus Eucalyptus belongs to a genus, which includes over 600 different species. In Brazil, eucalyptus grows faster, thanks to the climate and soil, than in other countries while increasing productivity. Of eucalyptus produced primarily pulp, used among other things, the manufacture napkins, toilet paper, printing and writing paper. Besides to producing pulp, eucalyptus trees are a source of coal for steel industry and wood for furniture, flooring and paneling. In Brazil, it takes about seven years before the eucalyptus can be harvesters and it can be grown on soil with low natural fertility, although it will not tolerate shallow soils or excess water.
In South America the eucalyptis trees growes fast and forestry industry is growing quickly. That creates a huge demand for raw material.
about 13.4 million hectares, accounting for 17.8% of the national territory. Meanwhile, forest plantations, mainly Pinus radiata and species of the genus Eucalyptus, covering a surface area of 2.1 million hectares or 2.8% of the national territory. Chile is a country with an important forestry sector and the growth of the forestry sector plays a fundamental role in the economy, participating with 2.7% of gross domestic product (GDP), the second most important economic activity in Chile, after mining. Forestry exports represent 11% of total exports. This resource is associated with a significant industrial heritage formed by pulp mills, sawmills, board and furniture plants, among others. Employment in the forestry sector reached about 130,000 direct jobs and 200,000 indirect jobs.

Harvesting in Brazil is conducted in large plantations that demands a lot av machines. The instensive operation require a large and developed service organisation.
Full maintenance for the whole fleet Komatsu Forest meets a forest emerging market in Brazil and in other countries of South America, such as Argentina and Uruguay. In Brazil, big customers have contracts for full maintenance of their fleets. The market is going through intensive transformations in Brazilian forest segment and has been characterised by its immense potential. New frontiers are being created in the country where huge investments in new planted forest have been made by Fibria, Eldorado Brasil and Stora Enso, and by others. Fibria, was created in 2009 from the merger of Votorantim Celulose e Papel (VCP) and Aracruz Celulose, is one example 22 JUST FOREST NO 12 • 2011 2012
of big company that operates on the emerging South American market. Other major Brazilian companies such as Suzano, Duratex, Klabin, Cenibra, Rigesa and Eldorado Brasil, among others, are being attended by Komatsu Forest who feels doubly committed to the success of the forestry operations of those important customers. Fibria currently ranks as the world’s largest pulp producer with a yearly production capacity of 5.25 million tons. Fibria is the world’s largest manufacturer of hardwood pulp, with a 29.3% market share. Fibria’s activities are supported by a forest base covering an area of 1.2 million hectares, spread across six different states: Bahia, Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo, and of this total, 405,000 hectares have been set aside for the conservation of native forest ecosystems. Fibria operates three mills (Aracruz mill, in Espírito Santos State; Jacareí mill in São Paulo State and Três Lagoas,
in Mato Grosso do Sul State) and two port terminals (Santos, in São Paulo State and Portocel, in Espírito Santo). The company also maintains the Veracel project in Bahia State, a joint venture with the Swedish/Finnish group Stora Enso. The plant opened in 2005 and produces about 1.1 million tons of bleached pulp per year. Veracel has 91,429 hectares of eucalyptus forests and 114,625 hectares of protected reserve. Pulp, a vegetable fiber present in all forest species, is used to manufacture various paper products for printing and writing, personal hygiene (tissue) as well as photographic paper, among others. In modern industrial pulp production, there are many stages from planting the trees to packaging and shipping the product to various markets around the world. Forestry activities are the core of Fibria production process, as the main raw material used by the company comes from planted eucalyp-
40 years of history Komatsu Forest Brazil was founded in June 1972, ie., 40 years ago, when Severino Rodrigues dos Santos and Antonio Freitas founded Implemater. In 1990 Valmet Group bought a controlling stake in Implemater, which was them owned by Lonard dos Santos and his brother Gilson dos Santos. Eventually, customers started inquiring after delivery, which also included service. Thus was built up gradually an organisation for this. A milestone was the signing in 1997 of the first maintenance contract with at the time Aracruz (currently Fibria). Today Komatsu Forest has a market share above 40 percent in Brazil. The main office of Komatsu Forest Ltda. is located in Pinhais, in Paraná State. The company also has nine branches, always around some large customer. In the Brazilian market is in operation more than a thousand Komatsu forestry machines and attachments, and about 500 of them are under maintenance contract.
Komatsu machines are well suited for the type of logging as the major paper and pulp mills require.
tus. In this regard, Komatsu Forest Ltda. is a strong partner in Fibria’s pursuit to reach challenging production goals in terms of volume and productivity. In this regard, Fibria has found a great partner in Komatsu Forest due to Fibria’s need to harvest trees in its planted
forests. Komatsu Forest has developed a full maintenance services contract responsible for all maintenance management, including the logistics of spare parts provided in the field. The functions performed in the contract encompasses mechanics training and preventive and corrective maintenance,
among others. The purpose of all the activities performed under the contract is to deliver the highest possible mechanical availability, which means increased production for Fibria and other contract customers in Brazil and a higher commitment of all Komatsu Forest personnel.

PRESENTATION: Komatsu 370E
A reliable head now even better Reliability and simple service are two of the most important characteristics for a productive head. The Komatsu 370E has proven to deliver as promised. This reliable head has now been made even better with an upgraded saw unit. The Komatsu 370E was primarily devel-
oped for Komatsu’s tracked machines, but the Komatsu 941.1 is also equipped with the head. The Komatsu 370E has proven capable of coping with demanding conditions in, for example, Brazil. The head is distinguished by its extremely robust design, which enables demanding operation throughout long shifts, and the fact that it can process and debark trees on eucalyptus plantations. The new Komatsu 370E has a completely new saw unit, which includes both a new saw motor and a new stable mount for the bar. The saw unit has been refined when it comes to attachment to both the chassis and the saw bar. The result is even higher reliability. Just as with the saw bar mount, the new saw motor means higher reliability, but also significantly better productivity. Productivity is mainly increased by faster cutting.
Stump treatment has been improved when it comes to operational reliability and function. Another new feature of the Komatsu 370E is steadier chain speed with the new saw motor, whereby the feed speed is automatically and continuously adjusted to the chain’s felling capacity throughout the cutting process. Chains most often run too fast when the bar exits the trunk, and this is when the risk of chain shot is highest. With the new saw unit, this is eliminated and a steady, optimal speed of 130 feet per second (40 m/s) can be maintained throughout the entire cutting cycle. To attain a more even cutting speed, the hydraulics that guide and control the cutting process have been moved from the valve assembly to the saw motor. This also entails less and simpler maintenance of the valve assembly.

Right settings save fuel Fuel economy is an important factor for most forest machine owners. Komatsu’s new engines are fuel efficient, but with focused efforts from the operator and the right machine settings – adapted to the operator and the stand – fuel consumption per cubic foot can be even lower. One important prerequisite for improv-
ing fuel economy is to adapt the machine to the operator’s driving technique and not vice versa. Work goes much more smoothly if the machine behaves as the operator wants. When reviewing the settings, you need to find the right balance between functions. Fastest is not always most efficient. With the right balance, not only can you reduce fuel consumption, you can also increase production as the machine is more easily operated. The basic principle is that the settings are adjusted to each individual operator, but also to some extent to whether operation concerns final logging or thinning. When it comes to the head, one can also consider the stand and tree species. The crane settings should also be reviewed once or twice a year, and the head settings on a regular basis, especially if there are large variations in assignments and tree species.
Settings that affect fuel consumption Machine settings: ➊ Find the right engine speed. Too low engine speed makes the machine less efficient and too high engine speed increases fuel consumption. ➋ Right driving speed, not too fast. Set the optimal crawl speed so that the operator can focus on crane operation even when the machine is moving a little while working. ➌ Avoid unnecessary idling. In a cold climate, it’s better to use the diesel heater.
Crane settings: ➊ Check the minimum flow to all crane functions. In this area there is only right and wrong. When the joystick is in the maximum position for the function you are adjusting, it should almost remain stationary. Do this for all crane functions to achieve smooth yet fast response and thereby efficient crane movements. ➋ Find the right start and stop ramp values. The start response shall be fast yet smooth. The stop ramp shall end a function smoothly without being slow.
➌ The joystick curve can be adjusted upward a little if using EME joysticks to require smaller joystick movements. Increase in smaller steps on a trial basis. ➍ The speed of the extender, boom and outer boom functions shall be well balanced to ensure effective crane operation.
Head settings: ➊ Set the pulse opening for feed start forward. The opening and closing time for the pulse can be adjusted in hundredths of a second. It is important to set the right trunk dimension. ➋ Regulate the knife pressure. Too high knife pressure makes for a heavy load when feeding a tree. Too low knife pressure compromises trunk grip and crosscutting. ➌ Adjust the roller pressure as necessary. Too high pressure makes feeding heavy and too low pressure risks slip damage. ➍ Set separate pressure curves for different tree species on the front knives and feed rollers.

Quality education for young operators Operating modern forest machines is an important part of a good quality operator training program. In the Nordic countries, young people studying to be forest machine operators are given the chance to train with modern Komatsu machines. Most people studying to be forest machine operators in the Nordic countries do so at high schools that offer vocational study programs. This gives young people the chance to thoroughly learn how to operate forest machines while also gaining basic theoretical knowledge about the forest. One example is Solör School in Norway, where students can train to be forest machine operators. Most programs include training in forest machine simulators, but just as important is to operate real forest machines out in the forest. The students at Solör School have operated Komatsu machines and received expert tuition from Komatsu Forest instructor Tom Volsdal. During the winter, the students study theory at Solör, split into different themes.
The machine the school uses is a Komatsu 941, which has a large enough cab to carry an instructor.
This knowledge is then put to use when the school borrows modern harvesters and an instructor. The machine they use is a Komatsu 941, which has a large enough cab to carry the instructor without difficulty, too. “Really this machine is a little too big for this stand, but since it has such a large cab, it’s perfectly suited for teaching purposes,” says Tom Volsdal from Komatsu Forest in Norway. Tom says that it’s important that such

programs are able to use modern machines. “We want to contribute to the education of skilled operators who can operate the most modern machines, and we do this by ensuring that the schools have access to machines,” Tom explains. Just as important is to contribute with expertise, such as instructors. “Those of us with great knowledge about the machines and extensive experience shall of course share this with the younger generation,” Tom ends.
Tom Volsdal instructs a budding operator.
Komatsu Forest’s donation has been used, for example, to improve the technical resources of the school’s teaching facilities to match a modern technology center.
Technology training for improved quality Skilled employees are important to the manufacture of worldclass forest machines. The investment in technology training for the young is also part of the long-term efforts to continually improve manufacturing quality. An important part of this work is honing the skills of assembly personnel. Komatsu’s forest machines are built
at two plants, in Umeå, Sweden and Chattanooga, USA. The vast majority of the machines are manufactured in Umeå, where all for-
warders, wheeled harvesters, and heads are assembled. To secure the long-term availability of
well trained personnel, Komatsu Forest contributes SEK 35 million to the Technical College at Dragonskolan High School in Umeå. Dragonskolan’s Technical College is attended by students aged 16 to 19 years. Of this sum, SEK 25 million is used to improve technical resources and upgrade the school’s teaching facilities to match a modern technology center, providing a teaching environment like that at an ultramodern technology company such as Komatsu Forest. This involves, for example, modernizing the teaching workshops with the latest technology, creating attractive school environments, and providing teachers with skills development. The rest of the money, SEK 10 million, is placed in a fund so that the school’s high level technical resources can be maintained in the long term. What’s more, students will be able to apply for scholarships for overseas internships. JUST FOREST NO 1 • 2011 27

Trip to Southeast Asia
Top marks for Komatsu
Komatsu Forest has contributed to a forest industry study trip for students reading the Forest Industry Economics Master’s program for foresters at SLU, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, in Umeå, Sweden. The purpose of the trip was to study the forest industry, forestry companies and commercial forestry conditions in Southeast Asia. Among other things, the students visited the forestry company APRIL, spending three days studying its impressive value chain from plant nursery to finished paper.
The Swedish research institute Skogforsk has conducted a study in which Komatsu received top marks in weighing and calculating the weight of loads. According to the study, in general the scales measure the weight of the load with good accuracy and a low average deviation. However, the best results were produced by Komatsu’s crane scales, which exhibited very good results in this respect. The average deviation for Komatsu was 0.13 percent per load, the least of all the tested crane scales.
