Many positive signs!

F

all and winter mean extended darkness here in the far northern hemisphere, though not everything is looking dark and bleak in the forestry business. Turning to the economic climate, we can actually see clear signs of improvement. One glimmer of light is the increase in sales of spare parts and used machines, a sign of increased activity in the forest industry. Today, Sweden and the UK are the most active European countries, though Germany and Finland are also experiencing an increase. Another positive trend is that the Brazilian forest industry is racing ahead with major investment plans for the coming years, which offers opportunities to sell forwarders and excavators equipped with harvesting heads. One of the underlying reasons is that Brazil will continue to supply countries such as China with fiber raw material. Indonesia is also making a fast recovery and from experience we know that plantation-based markets offer great potential. Together with Russia, Indonesia and Brazil are also important developing markets on which we will focus as they begin to play an increasingly important role in fiber manufacture. Another tangible sign is increased interest in biomass energy in the Nordic countries and Central Europe, with Finland and Germany in particular showing great interest in biomass energy. In the established forestry nations of Scandinavia, biomass energy systems and biomass energy products will most likely see a real INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE breakthrough. However, despite all the positive signs

we cannot expect a quick market turnaround, but rather a cautious increase in demand. Work to find new synergies within the Komatsu Group continues. One example is that we are gathering technologists from widely different operations. Remote analysis such as the FortraX system is a concrete example of a cross-disciplinary success. Another example of such synergy effects, set to benefit customers in the long term, is the reorganization process in Europe and North America, with among other things rationalization of spare part distribution with central joint spare part depots. Right now we are seeing the beginnings of positive developments both in the market and at Komatsu Forest. As the trend unfolds, we want to be an invaluable partner to all customers and the supplier of choice when buying a new machine r

New concept optimizes thinning The thinning and logging of sparsely wooded forests is of interest to many contractors in several parts of the world. The new Valmet 901TX harvester is a true thinning expert that together with the new Valmet 840TX forwarder is part of a completely new concept for optimizing thinning work.

T

he Valmet 901TX is an expert at thinning and lighter logging. The TX stands for Thinning Xpert. The new features of the harvester include Valmet’s unique bogie concept and larger 24.5” (620 mm) tires. Together, they lower the machine’s ground pressure and lessen environmental impact, which is important in thinning. Boom reach and lifting power are other important factors for effective thinning. This Valmet 901TX is equipped with a 32’10” (10 m) or 36’ (11 m) boom, boasting the greatest lifting power on the market at 62.7 tonfft (170 kNm). Together with Valmet’s integrated cab and boom concept, this means a lot, especially when working in steep terrain. The Valmet 901TX has extremely high ground clearance, making it easy to navigate difficult terrain littered with high rocks and stumps. Another advantage of the Valmet 901TX is its flexibility in terms of harvesting heads, offering compatibility with several different heads, such as the Val-

4

Just Forest No 2 • 2009

met 330.2 and the Valmet 350.1.The cab of the Valmet 901TX fulfills all new ergonomic requirements demanded of modern forest machines, which is especially important to efficiency. The generous headroom is very apparent, and the cab is both long and wide. Air quality, too, is of great importance to the operator environment. As such, the cab has a large air intake and an extra pre-filter on the air conditioning. Naturally, electronic climate control (ECC) is now standard. All combined, Valmet’s integrated cab and boom design, the perfect visibility, and its unique ergonomics create the best operator environment on the market. The Valmet 901TX also has the new ver-

sion of the powerful control system, MaxiXplorer 1.4, with new features that include a function to add service reminders and greater freedom when editing crosscutting instructions. Moreover, within reason you can make any desired changes to a price list during an ongoing assignment without the need to continually create new production

files. Yet another new feature of this version is full compatibility with the StanForD standard for calculating the volume of timber harvested with a multi-tree accumulator. Valmet is the first to offer such compatibility. The new Valmet 840TX forwarder is an

equally important part of the concept. The new Valmet 840TX is a nimble machine for its weight class. The forwarder has a short rear frame that helps the machine follow curves well, while the short nose makes easy work of obstacles in difficult terrain. But the Valmet 840TX is not only more compact, with a lighter bunk, the engineers have managed to reduce the machine’s total weight without compromising load capacity, which at 13.2 tons (12,000 kg) is the highest in its class. Traction is 17.4 tons (155 kN). The 175 HP (129 kW) engine uses four-valve technology, which not only provides massive torque, 553 lbf-ft (750 Nm), but even delivers great fuel economy. The Valmet 840TX also has a unique bogie with high ground clearance and wide 24.5” (620 mm) tires. Together

TX=Thinning Xpert Valmet 840TX - Highlights

with the lower total weight, this ensures very low ground pressure, a real advantage in fragile ecosystems. What’s more, 39” (1 m) wide tracks can be mounted on the rear bogie to further reduce ground pressure. The Valmet 840TX has a telescopic crane, available in the lengths 23’, 26’3”, & 32’10” (7, 8, & 10 m), and the new MaxiForwarder 4.8 system, with completely new machine status and production reports. The new production reports are fully integrated with the lever panels on the armrests and generate PRL files via the market’s most user-friendly interface. Machine status reports are based on the TSG standard and feature the same comprehensive functionality and simple administration as those in the MaxiXplorer suite for harvesters. r

er and big 890 forwarder are perfectly suited for this rugged and sensitive terrain. David’s company is paid by the acre for thinning work through a variety of funding sources. It recently upgraded its harvester to include MaxiGIS (geographic information system software) a technology that has become an integral part of his work with customer-provided GIS maps. David notes, “It is important for us to know exactly where to cut and sometimes it is even more important to know where not to cut. That is a big reason why we use the GIS.” David’s jobs are bid individually and generally range in size from 15 acres up to 150. Sites cover both remote locations and urbaninterface settings. David explains, “We have found there can be boundaries involved where the flagged lines may not represent

the actual project boundary. With the harvester MaxiGIS system we can notify our customer if we find a discrepancy between the GIS and the flag lines. We can also demonstrate exactly what we’ve cut and bill our customers accordingly. MaxiGIS is very accurate and it saves us a great deal of time. I still haven’t used the software to its fullest extent, but I can say that I use this tool every day.” MaxiGIS, which is becoming popular in

North America, is supported by Komatsu Forest. It can simplify the entire project for a contractor. Its capabilities far surpass handheld GPS devices used to flag job sites. It is a powerful software package that integrates with the forest company’s GIS maps to enhance a contractor’s timber supply chain capabilities and reporting.

MaxiGIS accurately establishes the job borders, showing site-sensitive areas and riparian zones. It can also show distances, topography and obstacles so that contractors can pre-plan the most efficient harvest and hauling routes. If a machine is used for shift work, or has multiple operators, the MaxiGIS can show the harvesters movement within a site informing the next operator where work has ended and whether the work has been completed. The MaxiGIS interface is displayed on the harvester’s computer screen and easily switches between the machine mode and the GIS interface mode. Among other things, the program supports multiple languages, and its integrated GIS Help Function is easy to use and helps users learn the software capabilities.

extremely prone to fires. Under the wrong conditions, a fire in the Lake Tahoe Basin could be catastrophic. This makes the services that David’s company provides critical to help reduce the fire danger in the communities. David concludes, “There is a lot more

at stake than the value of the harvested timber. We remove the fuel load with minimal impact to the land and return the forests to a

more natural state. When we are finished, we try to leave the jobs looking more like a park than a logging operation. With our machines, after a year of snow and a season of falling needles, there is almost no sign that my company was ever there. From a long-term perspective, the MaxiGIS software allows the landowners keep track of what we are all doing for the next generation. That way everybody can benefit.” r

When the harvest site is finished, data

can be loaded into a GIS enabled forwarder to efficiently extract the harvested logs. Data, including special notations about the job site, can be shared with the forest landowner to assist with long-term land management plans which can help to build a long term relationship. The natural beauty of the Tahoe basin is a big part of the economy. The area is a popular tourism destination and with homes surrounded and built into forestlands that have typically not been thinned, or burned in over one hundred years making the forests

LoadFlex Bio for biomass fuel Now there is a specially designed bunk option, LoadFlex Bio. It fits all forwarders that can be equipped with LoadFlex and makes biomass fuel harvesting both effective and easy.

T

he flexible LoadFlex bunk system is now available with a specially designed option for forwarding biomass fuel. LoadFlex Bio is guaranteed to optimize the loading of biomass fuel and you can now weigh forest residue loads so that the forest owner knows just how much biomass fuel has been gathered. The solution is entirely mechanical, with fittings mounted in the bunk, on both the bottom and the sides. Chains are run through the fittings and delimbed tree trunks are stacked on them. The solution is both simple and reliable, while also maintaining bunk flexibility. The biggest advantage is that LoadFlex Bio provides a bunk on which you can load biomass fuel up to the forwarder’s rated maximum load weight, something that is otherwise difficult to achieve due to the low weight-to-volume ratio of forest residue. The biomass fuel can also be piled high with retained stability. A crane fitted with ProTec is recommended for all biomass fuel harvesting. With its internal hose routing, the crane can be used to hold the load in place by

10

Just Forest No 2 • 2009

placing it directly over the load without the risk of any hoses fastening and breaking. In addition to being easy to use, LoadFlex Bio requires no changes for forwarding round timber and switching the bunk between forest residue and round timber harvesting is

a quick and easy process. When fitted with LoadFlex Bio, ProTec, the E28 or E36 grapple optimized for biomass fuel, and hydraulically maneuverable supports, any one of the Valmet 840.4, 860.4, and 890.3 provides a complete system for biomass fuel harvesting. r

Valmet machines in Russian Education Komatsu Forest Russia has won the tender for Valmet forwarder 840.3 and Valmet simulators delivery to Khabarovsky kray, the Far East of Russia.

K

omastu Forest Russia is delivering a new Forwarder Valmet 840.3 and Valmet simulators to Khabarowski kray for teaching the new generation of forest operators. The buyer is a State Regional Educational Institution for primary vocational training “Professionalnoye uchilishche 14”, that has won the National Educational Project contest and obtained the government financing for the purchase of modern equipment for cutting forest. The Institution was established in Komsomolsk-on-Amur in 1946 as a construction college, however in the year of 2000 it started to prepare forestry specialists.

“Today our region, together with Khabarovski kraj, desperately lacks specialists of forestry sphere, with professional and modern conception for work in this sector”, says Viktor Bobin, the director of the Institution. Today, Institution teaches about 300 specialists per year, including both forest operators and drivers, road constructors, offering day-time and evening classes. The training program is based on

theoretical knowledge and skills for control over the machine, gained in the class. After that the students acquire the necessary knowledge of service and maintenance of the machines, having practical training for maintenance of the real machines. This ensures the professionalism of the future forest machine specialists, highly demanded at the labour market. Since today, with the new Valmet 840.3 and simulators for harvest-

er, forwarder and feller-buncher the training becomes significantly improved, whereas the operators will have the opportunity to train their skills with the real machine. “Forwarder will be used only for training purposes and kept in the perfect technical condition. All teachers and future students will get the Valmet corporate style clothes, because we want the whole training process to be held in Valmet corporate style and with full accordance with its rules”, assures Viktor Bobin. At present moment Valmet center in St.Petersburg trains the teachers for the Institution – together with the director himself. “It is very interesting for us to be here, in the Head Quarters of Komatsu Forest in Russia and to gain practical and theoretical basis for using Valmet machines’, says Viktor Bobin. “the education is perfect and we use Valmet simulator and that very forwarder that will be delivered to us soon! r

he company Berneck S/A Madeiras headquartered in the city of Araucária, located in the metropolitan region of Curitiba, capital of Paraná State, has a very interesting history. The company produces and commercializes panels and wooden products. With its products, Berneck supplies the furniture, civil construction, electronic, naval and other industries, in Brazil and all over the world. After intense negotiations, in July of 2008, Berneck received a couple of new machines, composed by a Valmet 911.3 equipped with the Valmet 360.2 and a Valmet 860.3, that were the updated versions at that time. – At that moment of the negotiations, we already had the agreement that we was going to carry out a demonstration of a Valmet 941 equipped with the harvester head Valmet 370E, in the company´s Pinus plantations, says Lonard Santos, Director of Marketing & Sales Komatsu Forest Brazil. In the end of the tests - of about 15 days - this set was acquired by Berneck. The success gotten in the forest operations with Valmet machines had still opened the doors for the acquisition of one more Forwarder, at that time a Valmet 890.3, in December of 2008.

T

he new Valmet 931 offers the optimal combination of strength and flexibility. That’s the simple explanation for why this machine is productive no matter what the assignment. The operator environment is of great importance to productivity. That’s why we’ve invested great resources in the continued development of the cab. The Valmet 931 offers an extremely high-performance work environment. The spacious, full-circle slewing and leveling cab features a completely new directly-powered slew transmission. The cab interior is unusually spacious and the seat happily swivels a full 180 degrees. Air quality, too, is of great importance to the operator environment. The cab has a large air intake and an extra pre-filter on the air conditioning. Electronic climate control (ECC) is standard. The end result of Valmet’s integrated cab and boom concept is a first-class operator environment. The Valmet 931 has

a new boom, the CRH22. With its powerful lifting force and sturdy construction, it can easily handle the new Valmet 365 harvesting head, as well as the Valmet 370.2 and 360.2 heads. The power of the boom also allows it to be accurately positioned, even at the far end of its reach. The new boom is an essential part of the strength and flexibility equation. Another important part of this machine’s unique

combination of strength and flexibility is the new engine, based on four-valve technology and delivering not only more power, but also better fuel economy. Together, the mighty traction force and the refined Valmet Comfort Bogie provide almost unbelievable maneuverability and mobility, especially in steep terrain. Another new feature of the Valmet 931 is the powerful rear axle with integrated brake hoses. This ensures great reliability. The new soft-sealed couplings throughout the machine also contribute to increased reliability by minimizing oil leaks. This even results in lower environmental impact. The soft-sealed couplings are based on two flat surfaces, one of which is fitted with an o-ring

that creates a seal against the flat surface of the opposing coupling section. The Valmet 931 also has the new version of the powerful control system, MaxiXplorer 1.4, with new features that include a function to add service reminders and greater freedom when editing crosscutting instructions. All things come to he who waits… 300 hours. That’s how many hours Jonathan Crowther had clocked in his brand new Valmet 931 when Just Forest came by to visit. ”I’ve waited a long time for the right machine, and now I’ve finally got it,” he says.

16

Just Forest No 2 • 2009

J

onathan Crowther runs the forest machine company JC Forestry in West Yorkshire, in the northwest of England. Ever since he was eight years old, when on a trip to the woods he saw a work team busy harvesting, he’s had a keen interest in the forest. After studying agriculture and forestry, he finally started his own business and bought his first machine in 1990. ”For several years I only had used machines, but now it’s only new machines when I trade up,” he says. The latest addition is a brand new Valmet 931, with a Valmet 365 harvesting head, both of which were delivered at the beginning of August. This was a machine that was eagerly awaited. ”I’ve been looking for a powerful harvester, around 22 tons, but couldn’t find one. In April, I visited the Valmet factory in Umeå and had the chance to test drive a prototype Valmet 931. I realized immediately that this was the right machine for my needs,” he explains. JC Forestry works with everything from initial thin-

ning to heavy final logging. Most assignments are in Yorkshire and the Midlands, and the clients are the private family-owned sawmills Jeffrey Walker & Co Ltd, Euroforest Ltd, and UPM Tilhill. ”It’s great for thinning. The harvester is nimble and easily maneuvered and I find the parallel boom ideal for thinning,” says Crowther. ”Yet it’s also strong enough to easily handle quite heavy final logging.” Measurements are also very accurate.

Reliability is another important aspect for Crowther, and his new harvester doesn’t disappoint on that count. ”For me, reliability is more important than anything else as downtime is the biggest cost for any machine contractor. My previous good experience of Valmet machines has proved to hold true for the 931 as well, as so far I haven’t encountered a single problem,” he reports. A machine that doesn’t break down is obviously a prerequisite for maintaining high productivity, but equally important is that the cab work environment enables the operator to remain productive. Crowther thinks that the new cab is big enough without being too big, as he puts it. He also finds the cab quiet and the air quality good. The mini fridge and food heater he considers essential luxuries. ”I actually cooked and ate my evening meal in the cab yesterday,” he says. The terrain where JC Forestry works varies greatly, from level forestlands to extremely steep terrain. Crowther says that the Valmet 931 works really well even on very steep slopes. ”It’s powerful and can really climb when necessary.” The powerful engine delivers not only great traction, but also good fuel economy, even if Crowther thinks it’s a little too early to say yet. ”What I can say, though, is that the fuel consumption seems to meet my expectations. And if it exceeds them, then that’s just an added bonus,” he says. r

New head takes a giant step The Valmet 365 is a new, highly productive, and reliable all-round harvesting head that marks a dramatic step in the development of Valmet harvesting heads.

T

he new Valmet 365 harvesting head offers an optimal combination of strength, flexibility, and reliability that together give completely new meaning to maximum productivity. The new Valmet 365 has high traction and firm trunk grip. Three sturdy feed rollers keep the trunk in place while four feed roller motors with differential locks ensure that the feed receives maximum power at the right time. An extra large tilt angle also speeds the feed and thereby heightens production. What’s more, it also makes work in steep terrain much easier. The head has four moving delimbing knives that embrace the trunk well for effective delimbing. A well-balanced frame helps ensure a high net lifting force for the boom, especially when working with a long reach. You can choose from a large number of courses. Once a user has logged in the course offering can be personalized.

After each course unit, users complete a test on their newly acquired knowledge.

E-learning over the Internet widens reach Trainingbox, a new tool for e-learning (computer-aided training), offers sales personnel and technicians access to up-to-date interactive machine training with video, audio, and image content to aid learning.

M

any studies have shown e-learning to be a stimulating form of learning, with its greatest advantage perhaps being the possibility to work at your own pace without stress and when time allows. What’s more, a computer is always ready, making it possible to practice many times to optimize the results. Komatsu Forest has now developed a proprietary e-learning tool called Trainingbox. Trainingbox is a web-based tool, with no need for specialized software and the courses can be accessed from anywhere in the world. Each user has an individual account and

can choose courses and even units within courses. The courses have audio, visual, and textual content. What’s more, there are films to explain different machine functions and components. Despite all the audio-visual content, the tool has relatively modest bandwidth requirements.

Each course unit is followed by a test where the user must answer questions about what has just been learned. The user can keep track of courses taken, courses remaining, and test results. As each user has an individual account, the course offering can be tailored to individual needs or focused on particular areas. Moreover, users are only offered the courses they need. For example, technical personnel may be offered different courses relative to those developed for sales personnel. A major benefit of e-learning is the opportunity for quality assured courses that can be updated with the same content simultaneously throughout the world. In the future, this tool could be used to offer more user groups computer-aided training. r

The courses include text and images, as well as audio and video clips. Everything to make learning as effective as possible.

Valmet is launching a mobile communication system and a remote support service for the control systems used in the company’s forest machines. The operator can quickly get help directly in the computer, spanning everything from software updates to machine setting adjustments.

Better service for Maxi from afar

T

he system and the service will initially only be offered in Sweden, Finland, and Germany. ”We’ve chosen to introduce the system in these countries first quite simply because these countries have the required cellular phone network capacity,” explains Per Annemalm, Product Manager at Komatsu Forest. The system/service, called FortraX Netsupport, comprises electronics for mobile communication, software for remote control of the PC, and a service agreement to access support. The electronics are integrated in the cab and the antenna is mounted on the roof so as to maximize communication performance. The biggest advantage of FortraX is that downtime while waiting for service measures involving the onboard computer is reduced, which saves money. What’s more, help with machine settings to ensure optimal performance can be provided more quickly. Many service measures include elements

20

that require the use of the forest machine’s computer. As it can be controlled remotely, help can be given more quickly without the need for the technician to travel out to the machine. And not only can the computer be controlled remotely, technicians can make an inventory of the system hardware and software, troubleshoot the hardware, and even update the software. Training in using the system can also be given, since the operator can see exactly what the technician is doing with the control system. The technician can show how service measures are done and use the built-in chat function to communicate with the operator. With its built-in modem, FortraX provi-

des the option to use the Internet and e-mail in the cab. In other words, it replaces the need for a telephone or modem that is only used to send and receive data. Today, many operators are dependent on a modem to con-

nect to the Internet to access the forest contractor portals offered by most major clients or to report production and operating data. ”FortraX Netsupport offers the ability to control the harvesters’ computers remotely, which can only save time. And the technical platform also opens the door to extend troubleshooting to other parts of the machine in the future. It may, for instance, be possible to connect a webcam to the system in order to troubleshoot the mechanics and hydraulics,” says Per Annemalm. The safety aspects of remote control, such as in terms of customer integrity, have also been considered. In order for the technician to access the computer, the operator must provide confirmation each time a connection is made. The operator can also see exactly what the service provider is doing with the computer. What’s more, settings and passwords that no one else has access to are also required. r

Important: FortraX Netsupport is a service that requires access to mobile broadband with network coverage where the user is normally located. The user is responsible for acquiring a mobile broadband service subscription.

The benefits of FortraX • Machine software troubleshooting and service measures directly from the office. This cuts downtime and travel costs for the machine owner. • Machine adjustments, such as fine-tuning cutting windows, can be done from the office. • Machine software upgrades directly from the office. This means the machine always has the latest product releases. • Training, tips, and advice provided over the phone are easier to understand when the technician can show the operator what to do on the screen. • The service provider can make an inventory of the machine’s hardware to simplify troubleshooting or Just Forest No 2 • 2009 21 to provide information on required spare parts.

Direct contact between the service provider and the machine helps minimize downtime. The service and the system work over the Internet and are called FortraX Netsupport.

New spare parts depot gives quicker service The distribution of spare parts for Valmet machines is being bolstered throughout the world. At the beginning of the year, the entire spare parts depot for Valmet’s forest machines was moved to an area close to Arlanda International Airport outside Stockholm, Sweden. The move has secured, for instance, faster spare part deliveries and later cutoff times for orders.

n recent years, Komatsu Forest has experienced strong growth in several markets around the world. This has entailed increased demands on spare parts distribution. In order to meet customer demands for better service and faster deliveries, as well as future requirements, this spring Komatsu Forest’s central spare parts depot, which serves Valmet customers around the globe, was moved from Umeå in northern Sweden to an area close to Arlanda International Airport, located outside Stockholm, the Swedish capital. Moving the central depot provides customers with a number of benefits.

New more effective spare parts distribution network

T

he relocation of all of Komatsu Forest’s spare parts from Shawano, Wisconsin to the Komatsu Master Parts Distribution Center in Ripley, Tennessee is now complete. The move began in May with the goal of completing the transfer of the full inventory and the integration with the Komatsu system by September 1, 2009. Terry Anderson, Head of Customer Service and Technical Support, praises everyone for their teamwork and the excellent communication between personnel in Shawano and Ripley. The project involved registering some 66,000 part numbers in the Komatsu system. Registration also included identifying and cross-referencing existing ”common spare parts” already found in the system. The work also meant re-coding parts, and in some cases adding a Komatsu Forest suffix to part numbers to optimize the ordering process for forest industry distributors. The Master Parts Distribution Center has 9,280,000 sq ft (862,000 sq m) of storage

Since Arlanda is served by 85 airlines flying to almost 180 international destinations, spare parts can be shipped to Valmet customers around the world much faster than before. In turn, this means the cutoff times for receiving orders can be extended for most customers. Just Forest No 2 • 2009

23

The move also means that the central depot can expand its product range, which will benefit customers and dealers alike. Today, every order is sent directly from the orderer to a picking list to reduce the time between order and delivery. The storage, ordering, and delivery of spare parts are all simplified. It will quite simply be

space housing more than 300,000 spare parts and ships more than 2 million orders every year. Komatsu Forest’s customers will benefit from even faster and more secure deliveries. What’s more, the Ripley facility has specialist and dedicated technical personnel available to answer all kinds of questions and to provide an immediate response to urgent orders.

may we ask…

Jan Karlsson, General Manager, Support and Planning, Parts Business

Komatsu Forest’s customers will even

benefit from Komatsu’s nine regional spare part depots, strategically located throughout North America, for rapid spare part deliveries. ”All orders in North America for spare parts that are in stock are delivered the next day. International orders are sent within five days and urgent orders are sent the same day with a next-day delivery service. If a customer needs a spare part on Christmas Day, we’ll arrange it. We believe that all Komatsu Forest customers will be very pleased with the spare part service offered by the new Komatsu system.” r

easier to place orders when all spare parts are gathered in one place. What’s more, the entire logistics solution has been reviewed to optimize all handling and to find the best transport solution for each individual market by always using the best shipping agent for each region. An advanced IT support system keeps track of everything from shipping cutoff times to spare part delivery progress all the way to the service provider. To guarantee that the quality and reliability of deliveries is maintained, all control and administration of the central depot is conducted by the same personnel as before. r

It’s not only the spare parts depot that’s moved? ”Once it was decided that the central spare parts depot was to be moved closer to an international airport with a wider selection of transport providers, we started brainstorming from scratch on how we could optimize our logistics and reduce the time from order to delivery. We’ve achieved this by increasing the quality of each step of handling and logistics.”

What does that mean for me as a customer? ”That you’ll get your spare parts quicker, no matter where in the world you are.”

How does it work? ”We have good IT support to lean on, which helps us to be flexible and exact. IT support also ensures that manual handling is cut to a minimum to save time. What’s more, the location of the new spare parts depot offers a wider range of shipping agents, which has enabled us to determine the best transport and logistics solution for each individual market and country.”

The world’s first fully rotating head The Valmet 370E Continuous Rotating is the world’s first head with a continuous rotation function. This function enables the head to rotate fully without risking hose breakage.

W

ith a regular head, the head must be rotated back and forward during processing to avoid hose breakage. With the Continuous Rotating function, all hoses and electric cables run through a swivel, which means the operator can focus solely on production. Continuous Rotating is based on Komatsu Forest’s good experience of Valmet ProTec, the protected hose routing solution for forwarders, and the basic idea of Continuous Rotating is the same, to increase the machine’s MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures). The result is quite simply less downtime. Development work on the Valmet 370E

Continuous Rotating is the result of Komatsu Forest’s Kaizen work. Kaizen is Japanese, with Kai meaning change and Zen meaning continual improvement. These continual improvements chiefly comprise all the small, seemingly insignificant improvements that together make for a product better. Another central aspect of Kaizen is to give the customer what they really want and need. The primary driving force throughout the development of the Valmet 370E Continuous Rotating has been our customers in South America with their standardized production processes. The Valmet 370E Continuous Rotating is designed primarily for tracked feller-bunchers and excavators. r

Testing time in Brazil

K

omatsu Forest has been testing the Valmet 370E Continuous Rotating in Brazil since November 2007. The tests have been conducted with the help of our Brazilian customer Aracruz Celulose, the world’s leading short-fiber pulp manufacturer. Under the demanding conditions of a high and intensive production environment in a hot climate, the Valmet 370E Continuous Rotating has been put through its paces. Aracruz Celulose has an intensive production system that sees its machines operating for some 18 hours a day. The machines are used exclusively on eucalyptus plantations for final logging. ”Brazil has proven an excellent test laboratory for this product,” says Jose Carlos Pierri, head of sales and mar-

keting at Komatsu Forest Brazil. ”Having excelled in Brazil, we now know that the head will perform well anywhere in the world.”The head has been used for more than 2,500 hours of production, with very good test results for functionality and reliability. According to Aracruz Celulose, production has increased with the Valmet 370E Continuous Rotating. The main reason is that the operators can focus more on working without the need to worry about exposed hosing or flipping the head back and forward. Operation is simplified, production increases, and uptime is increased. What’s more, Aracruz Celulose has reduced its hydraulic oil consumption, thereby reducing environmental impact. r

A new TV star is born From tree to cardboard, this is what one of the episodes of the TV series Industrial Junkie will cover. The trees in question are found outside Piteå in the northernmost part of Sweden and the film team is from the UK. ”Swedes are extremely good people to work with,” says Pete Woods, director of the new Discovery Channel series.

Jonny Smith is filmed while instructed by Tomas Persson. ”Driving a harvester was easier than I thought,” commented Jonny afterwards.

The reason for recording the show in Piteå is that SCA is a major pulp supplier to the cardboard-manufacturing paper mills of northern Europe. And just outside Piteå, forestry contractor BRL maskin uses Valmet machines to log for SCA. ”Naturally, it’s great for us that a Valmet machine

own the forestry company that loaned the film team the harvester. They stand there, curiously watching the making of the program. And they don’t appear nervous, even though Jonny Smith, who is driving the machine, has never sat in a harvester before. He does, of course, have an instructor with him. ”No, I’m not particularly worried. I trust Tomas Persson, he’s a fulltime instructor. If, on the other hand, the show’s presenter was in there on his own, then I might be nervous,” says Rickard Lundgren. The team takes a break for lunch. Lightly smoked thin slices of reindeer meat, known as souvas, cooked in a pan over an open fire taste good, but it’s soon time to get back to work. ”We need to film the forwarder before it gets too dark,” says Pete Woods. r

a high degree of user-friendliness. The control system enables overall control over production and effective reporting, as well as complete control over the entire logistics and transport chain.

M

One of the many new features of MaxiXplorer 1.4 is a function that allows the operator to define alarms. This means that a contractor can easily add a service reminder to appear after a set number of operating hours, such as a reminder to change the hydraulic oil filter. MaxiXplorer 1.4 also offers even greater freedom when editing crosscutting

Another smart new function is a history of all altered settings. This means that the changes made to settings are stored in a log, enabling you to undo the logged changes. Yet another important new feature in MaxiXplorer 1.4 is full compatibility with the StanForD standard for calculating the volume of timber harvested with a multi-tree accumulator. Valmet is the first to offer such compatibility. r

New harvesting head for tracked machines The Valmet 378 is a new, highly productive, powerful, and reliable head specially designed for tracked machines and excavators weighing 20 tons or more.

T

he new Valmet 378 has a strong, sturdy frame and high traction, and all critical head components, such as plates, cutting unit, motors, mountings, knives, and hydraulics, are designed for highly productive use. The new head is the result of long-term development work based on the ideas of the Kaizen concept. Kaizen is Japanese, with Kai meaning change and Zen meaning continual improvement. These continual improvements chiefly comprise all the small, seemingly insignificant improvements that together make for a better product. In the case of the new Valmet 378, this work has resulted in more than 120 such small improvements. Another central aspect of the Kaizen concept focuses on the custom-

er and providing them with what they really want and need. Consequently, every component of this head and its entire design have been vigorously tried and tested to ensure optimum performance. Other new features of the Valmet 378 include a two-wheel feed for optimal reliability. What’s more, the head has protected hose routing from boom tip to rotator, greatly reducing the risk of hose failure. The Valmet 378 also has a new robust length measurement system that together with Valmet’s control and information system automatically takes care of everything from measurements to clamping pressure. The head is available with color marking and top saw options. The Valmet 378 is also offered as the Valmet 378E, which is a debarking head. r

Mike Gould runs the company Gould and Sons Logging in Castle Rock, Washington, USA. He’s been operating the new Valmet 378 for four months and is very pleased. ”It’s very reliable,” he says. Gould means that the head is well suited to trees with diameters in the 18–20 inch range (45–50 cm), though he’s mostly logged larger timber. ”It’s a powerful head with really good traction that quickly feeds the trees through,” he says. He thinks the head and the machine are well matched and that the trunk grip is impeccable. Gould is also pleased with the head’s delimbing, measuring, and cutting speed. ”The cutting is some of the best I’ve seen. It really aids production.”

Find a used machine on the net easily and safely Most people know that it’s safe to buy a used machine from one of the many Valmet dealers around the world. And now it’s also just as easy and safe to buy a used machine over the Internet, thanks to Komatsu Forest’s userfriendly used machines website.

B

uying a used machine can prove a good solution if you’re starting a new company or need an extra machine. Buying through one of the many Valmet dealers around the world guarantees that the machine has been thoroughly checked and serviced. Now we can offer the same sense of security when buying a machine over the Internet. There’s a good supply of reliable, used machines. This makes it easy for many contractors that need to expand their machine lineups and for those who want to set up a new forest machine company. Today, www. komatsuforest.com features hundreds of machines, each presented with detailed facts, such as how many operating hours it

has clocked, any optional equipment that is included, tire condition, and chassis number. An overall assessment of the machine’s condition, as judged by the seller, is included. ”The used machines website is available in different languages to make it easier to navigate and the published information, which often includes photographs, makes it easy to determine whether a machine may be of interest. What’s more, we’ve taken customer opinions to heart and improved the search function,” says Britta Näsman, who is responsible for the used machines website. It’s important to buy a thoroughly checked machine. The Valmet dealer has usually rectified any problems and replaced parts as necessary, and in some cases can even offer a warranty. All part-exchanged machines are thoroughly tested, and buyers can view the reports. For Valmet machines produced in recent years, you can also normally view oil test results, as almost all such machines have been oil-tested after 500, 1000, 1500, and 2000 hours. Another important point to consider is that many machines have been cov-

ered by the ProAct service system, which means they’ve been documented since they left the factory. For customers in central Europe, it’s easy to physically inspect most machines by visiting the European center for used machines, which is found in Hartmannsdorf, Eastern Germany, strategically located just a few miles from both the Czech and Polish borders. The used machine center collaborates with Komatsu Forest’s sales companies in Sweden, Norway, Finland, and the UK, making it possible to find a wide range of machines from many different countries. Aside from the 40,000 square foot (3,700 square meter) lot, the center also has a training and demo field, a workshop with space for six machines, and 1,600 square feet (150 square meters) of classrooms for internal and customer training. Even if you think you know how the machine works, training is important. It can save you a great deal of headache, especially in terms of costly downtime. A wise choice is to choose a branded dealership with trained personnel. Training can make all the difference between satisfaction and disappointment. r

The search function on the used machines website is now available in no fewer than nine different languages. Together with the new interface, this makes searching easy.

The used machines site can be found on the opening page of www.komatsuforest.com.
