MATTHIAS DYRK JÆR KISCH INTRODUCTION
Matthias Dyrkjær Kisch Copenhagen Denmark Matthias (at) dyrkjaer.dk
Arch

THE PROJECT AND CONCEPT
To do any work for the well known Arne Jacobsen landmark: Royal Hotel was of course daunting. But as we realised that there was almost nothing left of the original design - it was easier to do design work without re-creating the original design. The concept was to create a rich and luxurious environment while retaining a color and material palette which was similar to and inspired by the originial materials. While updating the design to reflect 21st century modern technologies and conveniences.
REFLECTION ON THE PROJECT
As an architect it was difficult to work on a project where I from a personal point of view would rather have seen a more gentle restoration and update of the original design. But as we could see that there wasn’t enough of the original furniture, panels, or design to work from I think that the final design was a subtle and understated enough design to not overtake the original feel of the Royal Hotel.
ROLE
3D model / Renderings / 2D construction drawings / site meetings
MATERIALS
Like Arne Jacobsens original design we used patinated brass, dark wood, Nero Marquina marble, and rich textiles. Most of the original wood and the original white Gjellebek marble was not an option to use today. So we had to accept a difference in look which we highlighted with inlays of brass between original materials and new materials.

THE PROJECT
In the new suburb of Fornebu - outside Oslo - in a former primeministers residence. A new conference facility; based around a British/Indian tea brand and the owner, Mr. Sethias, love of his wife, is under construction. The complex concept is first and foremost a symbol of the clients wish to roll out tealounges and concepts around the world bearing his late wifes name, and thus honoring her by putting her name out into the world.
REFLECTION ON THE PROJECT
The project is a delicate balance act between the clients taste; a combination of British, Indian and classic Louis the 16th styles on one hand and the Norwegian general managers knowledge of what will work with the customers that she is targeting on the other hand. The building is a listed building, meaning that we can not change the outside of the building except add a elevator shaft for handicap access and a emergency staircase - this add-on must look different than the rest of the building and be clearly defined.
The interor design is based on the keywords of; Rich, Feminim, colorful, and luxurious. The keywords and direction ROLE were given by the client and with the clear Concept, 3D model, Layout, Design, message that the project and interior must Furniture design not reflect Scandinavian minimalism.

THE PROJECT AND CONCEPT
REFLECTION ON THE PROJECT
The boxes each contain a primary function related to their workflow. The central and larges box contains the cash desk as well as a selection of the self-serve products. The two other boxes contain the juice station and the kitchen/ hotplate station. The two flanking boxes are each contained within glass walls to ensure hygiene as well as a focus on the task at hand for the employees.
The agreement with the client was not to make any detailed constructions drawings besides general plans and elevations. The details would be worked out by their contractor who is a friend of the founder. - after the first store we did a construction set with details to ensure a minimum level of craftmanship and quality.
The project for Palaeo, a health food brand with focus on a stone age diet, is based on two main ideas - a revision of their current workflow and to enhance the ‘hygge/mood’ of their shops to give them more of a café feel.
MATERIALS
The client asked for a reworking of their original concept to give the clients a more café and ‘hyggelig/cozy’ experience- but we ended up doing a complete transformation of their workflow and general look and feel.
The first shop with the new concept opened in the fall of 2014.
The materials used are oak wood, leathROLE er/wool cushions, concrete, glass, and 3D model / Renderings / Revision of black steel. The materials were selected to concept ensure that the materials that the customers are in contact with will be haptic and tactile while the materials in connection with the food was chosen to be easy to clean and maintain.

REFLECTION ON THE PROJECT The project was hemmed by unfortunate use of workers. which resulted in both a fire and a flooding. This was both a blessing and a curse as this ment we could change the original floors and the original ceiling to suit our needs.

BEO HERNING
Bang & Olufsen, Herning Facade concept
Client Bang & Olufsen Herning /Kenneth Koed Lauritzen
Type Facade concept
Year 2013
Made at Johannes Torpe Studios
Team Johannes Torpe Architect: Matthias DyrkjĂŚr Kisch Original concept and realization: Arkitec v. Lars Sternberg
Location(s) Herning, Denmark
THE PROJECT AND CONCEPT
The Bang & Olufsen Herning store is a private franchise store. The client had bought the rights to build on a central piece of land in Herning on the main square flanked by the church and the city hall. As a growing opposition in Herning was mounted, the client wanted Johannes Torpe, as Creative Director of Bang & Olufsen to be part of the project to ensure goodwill and positive PR in the local community. The original project was drawn by local architect company Arkitec and partner Lars Sternberg. We took the original footprint of the building and rounded the corners of the front and entrance to make the building slightly softer and more inviting. The most significant change was the facade material and window openings. The design changed from red bricks to perforated brass sheets. With an intended LED lighting scheme underneath that would light up the building softly in the dark.
REFLECTION ON THE PROJECT Both the original proposed project and our reworked project were presented to the municipality. Our proposal was selected and given building approval.
I would like to have been part of the project for the duration of the project and able to ensure the quality of the design execution. The client had already made an agreement - that no matter what - the local architect company was going to realize the project. We had a full day meeting explaining the project and were not involved further.
ROLE
Revision of existing building concept, new facade proposal, 3D modelling, creation of design documentation.

THE PROJECT
The roll out of the Bang & Olufsen stores across Asia (and world wide) is based on the concept from the Bang & Olufsen flagship stores in Denmark and Shanghai. The store concept had to be revised to fit within a more reasonable budget. While still retaining elements from the custom flagship stores. Standard elements were developed and subsequently went through several iterations to to be optimized both from a construction and price point.
This has meant that even with the cost cutting on the static elements, the stores are still fairly expensive to roll out and build, and many franchise stores are awaiting to see if there will be further price reductions before the commit to the new store concept.
ROLE
Construction drawings / 3D models / Renderings for Landlord Approvals / Revising concept from Flagship stores to regular stores
Additional furniture were developed and cost-cutting on the existing furniture and simplifications of details were also implemented.
REFLECTION ON THE PROJECT
The shops have a very large square meter price - largely because of the huge technical backbone, advanced lighting and intelligent electronic solutions.

Type Shop & Facade renovation
Year 2011
Made at Johannes Torpe Studios
Team Johannes Torpe Project Manager: Mikkel Bøgh Junior Architect: Matthias Dyrkjær Kisch
Location(s) Shanghai, China
THE PROJECT AND CONCEPT
The project was to create a complete and cohesive experience for a Chinese Onyx stone seller. The client sells whole stone slabs for construction as well as smaller items such as vases, tables, and gift items.
Most items such as the specified elevator were exchanged with cheaper Chinese versions to save money - which was then pocketed by the contractor.
ROLE
Concept / 3D model / Construction The concept was to showcase the onyx drawings stone for construction in the ground floor and have the sheets of stone move around the space to create the illusion of lightness - something inherent opposed to the nature of stone. On the two top floors the smaller items are displayed on podiums of wood and aluminum - depending on the color of the stone. Warm stone on aluminum and cold stone on the wood. On the top floor offices and negotiating rooms where placed.
REFLECTION ON THE PROJECT
Concept Video
The project was marred by an unfortunate use of an almost comically stereotypical Chinese build quality. All the specified details were of very poor quality where other materials were used instead of the specified.

THE PROJECT
The Chinese restaurant chain “South Beauty Group” wanted to present the Chinese Sichuan cuisine in locations across China and in Taiwan. Johannes Torpe Studios worked on several restaurant concepts of which 5 were realized. I worked on most of the restaurants with construction details, 3D modeling, and the use of water color elements on walls, carpets and ceilings. The largest single element that I worked on was the ceiling design for the Taiwanese branch of the restaurant chain.
putting everything together in Photoshop so that the artwork could be printed in Taipei and put up onto the ceiling. - The photoshop files for the ceiling was divided into 36 smaller files that all needed to fit together seamlessly.
REFLECTION ON THE PROJECT
The first couple of restaurants were great to be part of whith many different challenges ranging from designing water fountains to ceiling artworks and doing construction drawings for custom items. The last couple of restaurant became routine work with re-useing details and designs. My involvement lessend with the last restaurants as I was moved to other projects with greater responsibility.
The ceiling artwork is an interpretation of traditional Chinese silk paintings. The artwork was created as an A4 sketch ROLE by illustrator Kristine Mandsberg, for Taking the idea of the ceiling artwork from the initial concept and it was my role to execute the initial sketch into a 800m2 1:1 A4 sketch to 1:1 reality ceiling artwork. THE PROJECT
The idea was to create a bakery that would be a conceptual cousin to Agnes Cupcakes. But instead of having a more cleanl and luxurious aesthetics.
The original store at Torvehallerne is still open and is currently the Johannes Torpe Studios project that in its original form and shape has been open for the longest time.
Lauras Bakery is meant to evoke an honest ROLE Concept, Construction drawings, 3D feel and a focus on good quality bread models and pastry. The materials selected for the project are meant to enhance the concept by being more honest and raw rather than polished and pretty. The materials used are polished concrete, oak wood (which was distressed to give it a recycled look, subway tiles, and powdercoated steel.
REFLECTION ON THE PROJECT
The owner of Lauras Bakery went through financial problems with Agnes Cupcakes and therefor planed projects were skipped and the last couple of stores have been made much more sparingly - but perhaps also with a more honest use of materials.

THE PROJECT
Kold College is a school offering education in everything from “jord til bord” - from “ground to table” such as dairy technician, farming, bakers, chefs, waiters, etc. As part of a new strategy for the use of their existing cantena they wish to create a main “heart” in the building. This main “heart” is an open show kitchen where the students can showcase skills and serve their fellow students.
I was tasked with creating visuals for the project that Kold College could use for applying for funds from philanthropic associations. The building addition was done in a style that reflected an existing addition created by

SCHOOL CHAIR

THE PUBLIC SCHOOL CHAIR
The focus for my thesis project was to design a new type of chair for the public schools in Denmark. The focus was to revive the classic way that education is intended and the way the students are meant to sit and absorb the knowledge from the teachers.
SIZE AND MATERIALS
The chair is intended as a series in 5 different sizes to ensure that there are chairs that match the height of all students. The chair is stackable and is made from an 11mm birch plywood seat that is mounted to a powder coated steel tube frame.
The intention is that the chair gives the students several different options and possibilities for sitting positions during classroom education. The chair offers with its simple design - two distinct sitting positions. The first position offers a more active seat - where the focus is on the students table and the work immediate in front of the students. And the other is a more passive position where the student is orientated out into the classroom.

BRIDGING
Bridge in Teglholmen, Copenhagen School concept project
Type XL design project
Year 2010, 7th semester
Made at Department 11, Royal Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture
INTRO
The Bridge would be located in the harbor of Copenhagen between the two parts; known as Sluseholmen and Teglholmen and over the 100-meter-wide channel called ‘Teglløbet’,
LOCATION
The area has been recently developed, in accordance with the master plan by Soeters Van Eldonk Ponec in cooperation with Arkitema. The area is still undergoing development, though due to pollution of the site on Teglholmen and the current status of the financial markets, the next stages of the development of the area have been put on hold for the moment. The area is a kind of pastiche on the historical canal buildings in Holland, Christianshavn and the docklands of London. Though the apartment buildings are designed to look unique, they are similar in their architectural style, and the interiors of all the apartments are very similar, Planners envision the same inhabitants with the same kitchens and the same number of children as in all the other newly developed apartments in the area.
THE BRIDGE
The bridge would directly connect the two quaysides of Sluseholmen and Teglholmen along the main axis of the area. Thus the bridge follows the natural flow along the main axis of the area and with its minimalistic though intricate design it offers a natural continuation of the existing ways of movement for pedestrians and bicyclists in the area. while still playing with the concept of a straight bridge crossing over the harbor channel. The pedestrian and bicycle lanes will bring distinct experiences to the many users, including commuters and local residents of the area. The location of the bridge will, along with its many users, be a new image of the city life. The bridge should be a part of the urban relationships of the vicinity. The architectural expression of the bridge should enter into the higher urban order, so that the contact with the water plays a major role.

STUDENT HOUSING
Student housing seen from Tivoli School project
Type Building in an urban context
Year 2008, 4th semester
Made at Department 5, Royal Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture
INTRO
The main theme for the semester course is the complex and dense city. The building as a community is the aim of the research and its connection and relation to the city, the neighborhood, and the program. The façade of the building is also looked at, as the part that works as the ‘face’ of the building, and the special transitions toward the city. Another central theme is the research of the complex relationship between the singular unit, the room, and the greater organization and logistics of the layout of the building.
The program is to draw a building/building complex, for the corner site surrounded by the streets of Tietgensgade and Ved Glyptoteket. The site lies in the center of the city of Copenhagen and has both a cosmopolitan character with Tivoli and Glyptoteket as its neighbors. But still the residential spaces in the area connect the site to a very local place in the city. The site is characterized by many different building structures with a large number of historical layers and references: new and older residential buildings, larger institutions, monuments and tourist attractions. The site is also placed in an infrastructural center of the city

OUTDOOR CHAIR
We love being outside in the summer, flocking in the parks, on the harbor front, wherever we can find a ray of sunshine in between the showers of rain.
DINING CHAIR
With the introduction of a char that can be moved around in the confines of the parks and public space. We can give the users more freedom to decide how they want to use our public space.
Eating is an activity, where there is much movement, though usually only small movements. I thus wanted to design a chair that supports these small movements.
With the flexibility the chair offers we can create and give people more opportunities for using the public space in a way that is more fitting with the way they want it to be.
ROCKING STOOL
A dining chair is for the enjoyment of food, the social aspects surrounding the meal, and the dining experience.
The chair is designed so that it follows the natural movements the body makes and that take place during the active act of dining. The chair further gives an active and open sitting position which gives a better and healthier posture.
The rocking stool was part of a six week furniture workshop. There were material re- The frame is 10mm powder coated steel, strictions that meant that only steel rods of and the seat and back are made of black stained birch plywood. a diameter of up to 8mm could be used. I worked with the idea of a rocking stool based on the statement “the best position we can sit in, is the next position”. The rocking movement challenges and forces us to constantly shift position and to sit more correctly in an open sitting position. The material limitations meant that the construction had to be part of the visual expression of the furniture.
DINING TABLE
The dining table explores traditional woodworking techniques and connection details but ‘super sized’ to fit with the general size of a dining table for 8 people. The table is constructed out of solid oak and walnut veneer.

TROLDTEKT
Troldtekt design award Student competition
Type Student competition
Year 2012
Honors: 1st prize
CONCEPT
I wanted to slightly change the way that the Troldtekt Acoustic plates are used and how they appear and are shaped today. The overall shape is still the rectangle. By transforming the material and adding the double curvature and cutting slits into it, the Troldtekt plates are transformed into an element that is not just to be hidden away in the ceiling. The acoustic plates become a sculptural element that can be put together in ever increasing sizes and complexity.
The natural slits and openings that occur in the construction add possibilities for adding light elements such as LED or regular old fashioned fluorescent lighting.
SYNECDOCHE 1: A figure or trope by which a part of a thing is put for the whole, the whole for a part, the species for the genus, the genus for the species, or the name of the material for the thing made, and similar.
Together with added light elements the plates can be used in smaller settings like homes, smaller public spaces, and institutions. But can also become a large element for use in sport facilities, factories, etc.
