Thank You We would like to thank Richard and Hillary for their time and patience over the past couple of months. They have spent many an hour guiding us through the magazine processes, introducing us to as many of the lovely distributors as possible and responding to our countless messages when we got muddled! We hope that we can continue your good work

Allow Us To Introduce Ourselves When I saw that the Dyserth Times was looking for a new editor I knew immediately that it was something that I wanted to put myself forward for—much to my husband Mat’s dismay. I always look forward to receiving the Dyserth Times as it keeps me up to date with news and events both in Dyserth and the wider community. Family and friends visiting us comment upon the 'Times' and are envious - they wish they had such a publication in their community (though not a single one has yet started one!). We all have busy lives and, as a result, after being resident for eight years in the village we're not as immersed in village life as we'd like to be. However, taking on the editorial role with The Dyserth Times has rapidly improved our involvement and we have we have met so many wonderful people and learned so much. This role is a real challenge and I'm grateful to my brother Liam, a budding journalist, for agreeing to share the role with me. His wealth of experience will no doubt be invaluable Hello! This is probably the first time many of you will have heard from me. When Katie asked me if I wanted to get involved in editing the Times, it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down. I am a Sports Journalism graduate and although I am yet to forge a career in the industry, I am still passionate about it and this seems like a perfect opportunity to hone my skills and contribute to the local community in the process. I’m not a Dyserth resident like my sister, however I have lived in the surrounding area for 20 years. Having been shown the ropes by Richard and got to know the process around the magazine in the last few weeks, I’ve come to understand how important this magazine is to the local area. Hopefully we can do you proud and continue on from the great work Richard and Hillary did. 3

Horeb Chapel, High Street, Dyserth Firstly may I congratulate the winners of this year’s Village Quiz, the Community Library team, for an excellent performance! The quiz took place on 27th April, with 8 teams taking part, attempting to answer a diverse set of questions set by our resident quizmaster, Mr Allan Morgan. Well done to everyone involved, and particular thanks to Allan for taxing our brains so well (again!). As Dyserth Chapel is home to the two churches of Horeb URC and Bethel PCW, we joined together on Sunday 6th May for United Service which was led by Dr Eryl Davis, a native of Dyserth but now retired Professor in Religious Studies from the University of Bangor. Eryl used the text of the Lord’s Prayer as his theme for preaching, bringing alive some very familiar words which we so often take for granted. Christian Aid Week took place during May and so, together with the other village churches we hosted a Big Brekkie, with food and various stalls, to raise money for this charity which works with some of the poorest communities in the world. If you’ve visited Paterson Hall recently you may have noticed that a small tree has been planted to the side of the hall and that a footpath has been laid leading towards it. This is the beginnings of our Peace Garden which is slowly taking shape. Our vision is to create a small garden area with various shrubs and plants and somewhere to sit that will be available to anyone who wishes to use it. This is already a joint effort with help coming from various people – so thank you for all you are contributing which is much appreciated. Talking of gardens, we will be holding our annual Garden Party down at Glan Rafon, Pandy Lane on Saturday 23rd June, from 2 – 4 pm. We are going for a Western/Mexican theme this year so cacti, sombreros, and tortillas abound! Look out for more publicity as the date approaches. Paterson Hall is in regular use for church and other community events and we now have the advantage of free WiFi for our users which we hope will be appreciated and may lead to a more diverse range of bookings. If you are interested in holding an event at Paterson Hall then please get in touch. Barbara is our bookings secretary and she can be contacted on 570793. Keep an eye on our website for all the latest news and information. Rev David Salsbury – Minister of Horeb Chapel United Reformed Church. www.dyserthchapel.org.uk Search @horebchapel on Facebook

DYSERTH & DISTRICT FIELD CLUB The Anniversay Lecture entitled ’The Limestone Quarries of Penmon’ was well received since it told not only of the work of the quarries - which provided the stone for both the Menai bridges - but of the lives of the various people involved in working the stone and transporting it by carts and ships to the building site. Many dramatic tales were related. On April 7th the walk around Caerwys took place in very wet weather so the route was confined to the town streets with the after-lunch section planned to include the fields on the outskirts abandoned in favour of a longer visit to the warm local cafe! Nevertheless many interesting buildings in this historic village were viewed and their associated stories recounted. Among these, of course, was the church, recently refurbished and considerably changed since the Club’s last visit about fifteen years ago. It retains some remarkable grave slabs notably that thought to be of Elizabeth Ferrers, the wife of Daffydd ap Gruffydd the brother of Llewelyn the Last. The winter programme finished with a fascinating illustrated lecture by the North Wales officer of the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust, describing her work of the last ten years with these animals and outlining plans for the future. To start the summer programme a walk at Beddmanarch Bay and the Penrhos Coastal Path was enjoyed by thirteen members despite it being a rather cold, windy and misty though dry day – at least there – it seems that Dyserth and Prestatyn basked in lovely sunshine! The walk encompassed the former estate of the Stanley family with various follies and viewing platforms remaining, some giving excellent views over Holyhead harbour. A picnic lunch was taken in the shelter of the ruins of the Stanley’s private dock near the former gun battery emplacement dating from the Napoleonic wars period. The woods in the area were resplendent with lots of bluebells, celandines, wild garlic and small patches of rarer flowers. The party was delighted to see close views of red squirrels feeding from the special boxes placed on some of the trees by the wardens of this lovely area. Tea and cakes in the former Telford-built tollhouse completed a good day out. Next will be a walk along the Dyserth Nature Trail and the first excursion by coach of the summer to Biddulph Grange will be on June 2nd. Non-members will be very welcome to come on this visit - and also on all other events - but if you wish to come please book early and at least ten days before the date stated since events may be cancelled if the is not enough apparent interest. Details can be found on the Dyserth website under ‘Organisations’ or by phoning the Secretary on 01745 336456 or any committee member. Two more excursions are planned: Norton Priory on July 21st and Stokesay Castle and Shropshrope Hills Discovery Centre on September 22nd. There will also be walks and visits: Halkyn Mountain on June 16th, Llangynhafal on June 30th, Llyn Parc Mawr and Cors Ddyga on July 28th, Nercws Forest and Bryn Alun on September 8th and Henllan area on October 6th.

8

Everyone will be very welcome at these events which the Club very much hopes will attract new members. If you wish to join the Field Club or need any other information please contact the Secretary on 01745 336456. Information about the Club and full details of the programme appear on the Dyserth website under ‘Organisations’. Look out for details of the summer programme on local posters, in the libraries and on the website and then please join in! D S Richards

County Councillor David Williams Apologies for the brevity of this report, but there are just one or two issues which I wanted to comment upon just before the deadline for submission of articles. The most topical and contentious issue is the uncertainty about the legality of dog walking on council owned fields, and the lack of clarity of signage etc. I am in the process of working with Tim Evans at Denbighshire to have three larger signs installed at each entrance to the King George V playing fields instead of the one badly sited, small obscure sign that has been put up at the Thomas Avenue entrance. In the interim residents are entitled to walk their dogs on a lead on all paths within the King George V field, allowing access to all entrances and exits to and from it. It is not permissible to walk dogs within the marked boundaries of football pitches, though at present it is very difficult to determine where exactly these marks may be, which is frustrating for all involved and unsatisfactory for all concerned. I hope to have more clarity on this matter, and much clearer less ambiguous signage before too long. As regards improvements to Dyserth High Street; these are in hand, and formal plans will be publicised in the near future. Some legal issues have meant that things have been somewhat delayed, but residents should see public notices appearing for consultation and to hear of any objection to the plans. As things stand and barring any more unforeseen problems it is projected that the works to our High Street will be done in late autumn of this year. Cllr David Gwyn Williams

Nature Corner - Spring 2018 Congratulations Katie on your first edition of the Dyserth Times and thank you for asking me to continue with Nature Corner. I am writing this in our garden after a few hours of essential maintenance and listening to a Blackbird in full song! Of course this morning before 5.00 the dawn chorus was in full voice and probably the same Blackbird was part of the larger choir. What a superb way to wake up and we’ve waited such a long time for spring to finally arrive and it’s a late one too. The Bluebells arrived slightly earlier than last year and were in great quantities. Sadly by the time you read this, much of what I am writing about will be a memory. However, I hope some of you have enjoyed what nature brings to us in Springtime. Dave Parry and other members of the Dyserth Environmental Group have added more nesting boxes at Gibbs Wood. You may remember told you about the Owl Boxes last time. A trail camera was setup and early after installation it caught a Tawny Owl fly in to inspect. Sadly, the potential new occupier decided that it wasn’t for him/ her, flew off and didn’t return! A Squirrel decided it was just right though. Oh well, we can’t pick our neighbours! That’s not to say that the Owls won’t come, but like everything in nature patience is a virtue. That said, a few other boxes were set up, smaller this time, with 3 varying entrance hole sizes. It is to be hoped that perhaps Nuthatches, Pied Fly Catchers and the stunning Redstarts may take a fancy to becoming residents. To date the Blue Tits are the only takers (see pic), but it’s still early. In fact in our garden our nest box has been visited as a potential Blue Tit rental as you can see in the picture. Also to be seen at Gibbs Wood was an early purple orchid, violets, Celandines and wood anemone’s are out in force, As the breeding season is well underway and although the ground is relatively soft, 2 our birds still need a helping hand. So, sunflower hearts, Niger seeds etc. High protein foods are best and will be very well received. If the weather gets hot then please don’t forget to make fresh water available and top it up regularly.

3

The RSPB tells us that all types of bread are acceptable to our garden birds, but ide1 one component in a varied diet. Bread does not contain the ally it should only be just necessary protein and fat birds need from their diet, and so it can act as an empty filler. Although bread isn't harmful to birds, try not to offer it in large quantities, since its nutritional value is relatively low. A bird that is on a diet of predominantly, or only bread, can suffer from serious vitamin deficiencies, or starve. Only put out an amount of bread that birds will eat in a day. Have a great summer.

The Hedgehog “I will tell you a tale”, said the slug to the snail “of a hedgehog who lives by the wall. He scurries around, with his nose to the ground; and can roll himself up in a ball. But when summer is gone, and Autumn draws on; and white frost appears on the ground. He finds a warm spot, and no matter what, will stay there til Spring comes around. But while he’s asleep, with nothing to eat; he gets thinner and thinner and thinner. So, if you see him around with his nose to the ground; watch out or you could be his dinner”. John Feaviour

NSPCC We are nearly there! You may have been watching the development of our new shop in Thomas Avenue. Our new landlord, Fran Blythman, has been working extremely hard to complete the refurbishment as quickly as possible. So much so, that the interior is now ready and the shop ladies are in sorting the huge piles of stock . We can’t believe we had so much in such a small space before. What everyone is waiting to hear, is, when will we be opening. Well, here is the definitive answer:

FRIDAY 1ST JUNE AT 10.00 As a reminder, our opening hours are 10.00 – 16.00 Monday to Friday and 10.00 to 15.00 Saturday. In case you haven’t noticed, the new shop is just around the corner from the Bangla Fusion Takeaway, in Thomas Avenue. The NSPCC sign should be going up very shortly, so then you won’t be able to miss it. In the meantime, we will be grateful for your donations of unwanted items, big and small. Please bring them along during our normal opening hours and there is likely to be someone there working hard. Unfortunately, you will not be able to come in and buy until we are officially open.

You will see that we have so much more space than in our previous premises. Because of this, we are hoping to widen the range of our stock including perhaps, small items of furniture. If you do have anything that is surplus to your requirements, please let us know. Although we are very pleased with our new shop, I think we may have been upstaged by Harrods. Volunteers are running ‘ Fashion Re-told’ – the first ever standalone fashion pop-up store in aid of Harrods’s long-standing charity partner. As the ultimate pre-loved fashion pop-up, Fashion Re-told is selling donated designer items to raise funds for the NSPCC’s important work in London. That is one-upmanship! On another shopping note, if you are a regular customer on Amazon why not donate a small amount to a chosen charity as you shop. Amazon’s own giving platform makes it easy, just go to smile.amazon.co.uk, log into your account and checkout as you normally would – but with 0.5% going to charity (and NSPCC is one of the options!) There’s more information at smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/chpf/about Finally, a huge thank you to Fran and Lynne and their band of helpers for all the hours they have put in, to bring the NSPCC shop back to Dyserth! All the volunteers are raring to go and are looking forward to seeing our regular customers and hopefully some new faces too. Gill Morgan

Reframing Pain Chiropractors can sort out a lot of pain, but what happens when we can’t? This article is about a technique I give my patients to help them deal with ongoing low levels of pain. The first thing you should do, if you are experiencing recurring pain, is to get it checked out professionally. If you have nothing seriously wrong, and the problem is mechanical (i.e. bones muscles and joints) a visit to the chiropractor will probably sort it out. However, once the pain is better, many people find that it may recur in the future. Why does the pain come back? There can be many reasons. Here are some of them: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Repetitive stress at work. Poor posture. The tissues become weakened and prone to re-injury. Stress or anxiety cause ongoing muscle tension. Loss of tissue resilience due to aging.

A combination of these and other factors often lead to tissue damage. It may take a course of treatment and rehabilitation exercises to heal, but it can be difficult to remove all the causes of the problem. For example. You may be putting a lot of stress on your shoulder because of your job as a builder. Or you may be sitting for hours on end over the computer. You cannot just quit your job so the strain on your body is going to continue. I teach my patients exercises and tricks to help avoid the worst excesses of posture, but with the best will in the world… this might not be enough; For some people, the painful symptoms will return and there is nothing they can do about it. Well, there is; You can reframe pain. As I have said, if the pain is severe and ongoing, you need to see a professional. Let’s assume you have done this. You have had some treatment the pain has gone away. But now you feel it starting to come back. This can be frustrating and upsetting especially if you thought you had got on top of it.

Firstly, you need to stop the negative thoughts, let go of the frustration and upset, and think about what you can do. You must do this because negative thinking will make the pain feel worse. Remember the pain is not as bad as it was originally; it is just starting to return, don’t catastrophize; it is not going to be as bad as it was before because you are going to take control. See the pain as a warning that if you don’t look after yourself things are going to go wrong. The pain is like the oil indicator light in your car. There is no need to panic if the light comes on; It comes on long before your engine has run out of oil. You have plenty of time to top it up. By the time you have been through a course of treatment you will have learnt the main causes of your pain. So, you know what to do. Have you been working too hard,

16

are you under a lot of stress, have you been sitting round in poor posture? It is simple, change what you have been doing and the pain will go away. The original injury will not return. This is the reframe: Originally pain was your enemy; it ruled your life and it was unbearable. Now the pain is your friend. It is your warning light. You can say “thank you” to your body for giving you this warning before injury comes. Do what you need to take the strain from your body, and the pain will go away. Dyserth Junior Football Club – June 2018 update It is hard to believe that the 2017/18 season has almost drawn to a close and that the teams of Dyserth Junior FC will be taking a short break (perhaps!) before beginning their pre-season training in preparation for the 2018/19 season! As had been the case for a few years now, one team becomes too old to play in the Rhyl and District Youth and Junior Football League. So, we want to wish our Under 16s team all the very best for the future, and offer our thanks to Kevin Hughes, Kevin Barker and Bob Hughes for managing the team for many years. Some of the players have been with the team since they were Under 10s so thank them also for their loyalty and commitment to DJFC. At the other end of the ages we have an enthusiastic group of players, coaches and parents in our Fun-Football minis teams. The U9s have been busy preparing and raising money for their Blackpool tournament at the beginning of June so we wish them well as they represent Dyserth across the border! We will be holding our annual presentation and fun-day on Sunday 17th June. This is an opportunity for all the teams to come together for the day and compete in a minitournament before receiving the mementos and trophies for the season. Let’s just hope for some fine weather! Again our thanks go to Andy Chadwick who is stepping down as our club secretary at the end of the season. Prior to becoming secretary Andy managed a Dyserth team to U16s level so we thank Andy again for his hard work and commitment over many years. The good news is that Dave Cooke, whose son plays in our U9s team, has agreed to take over from Andy. We hope for smooth transition and wish Dave well in his new role. We have some plans and ideas for taking the club forward so watch this space for more details, and thank you for your continued support. Dyserth WI Well we are almost half way through the W.I. year and April and May meetings lived up to expectations. In April we were given the low down, by Boots beauticians, on the best No.7 products for our skin type and colour – who would have guessed that there were so many different shades of skin tone! May saw us celebrating all things Hawaiian. As well as the usual wonderful buffet brought along by members we had a talented, visiting, ukulele orchestra, limbo dancing, hula hooping, singing and poetry as well. Look at the photos and the videos on the Dyserth W.I. Facebook page [if you dare!]. We also took this opportunity to present Cynthia Gaythorpe, our most loyal member, with a plant and a special cake to celebrate her 90th birthday. Happy birthday Cynthia. The topics for the June and July meetings are Curd, Nurd and all things Cheese and Confessions of a Scouser – such variety! As well as our monthly full group meetings we have smaller groups with something for everyone – Singing, Crafting, and Knit and Natter There are lots of trip and outings arranged this year including ‘The Son of A Preacher Man’, ‘The Play That Went Wrong’, Calendar Girls, and early in 2019 ‘Kinky Boots’ all at Venue Cymru. We will be having our annual afternoon tea in June and then, in July, we have our much anticipated educational trip which will see us travelling over to Liverpool to view the Terracotta Army, a once in a lifetime opportunity for members. June will also see some members travelling to Cardiff to the national AGM. We are excited to hear what the guest speakers, Dame Stella Rimmington and Huw Edwards, have to say. It came as no surprise, with all this going on, that in May we had to close our books for a while as we now have at 103 paid up members! However if you would like to join us in the future, you are welcome to email our membership secretary [reesowen.lro@gmail.com ] to have your name added to our waiting list. We continue to meet on the second Friday of every month [except August] in Dyserth Community Centre. Keep up with our activities on Face Book. Just type in Dyserth WI to see pictures and articles about past events and outings or, for further information contact Anne Sanderson (President) on 01745 859526. Sue Wright

GDPR On 25th May new legislation came into force called General Data Protection Regulation.

This is a big change in data protection rules to ensure that your data is only used by you in the ways you want it to be. One of the biggest changes is that companies must have your express consent to send you any marketing e-mails. If you own or work for a business it is important that you make sure you are GDPR compliant by 25th May as very large fines can be imposed on those who are not.
