MARK ATKINSON Higher Education Learner of the Year 2009 Aberystwyth University Studying English at University had always been a lifelong dream for Mark Atkinson, however he had never felt 'good enough' to achieve his goal. His life was blighted by drugs and alcohol, but whilst receiving treatment for his addictions, Mark decided to reverse the 'downward spiral' and search for a way to make his life more rewarding and fulfilling. His search led him to a conversation about literature with a visiting representative of TRAC, an agency which assists care-leavers. It proved to be a conversation that would change Mark's life forever. After his initial conversation, Mark was interviewed for a place at Aberystwyth University. ‘I thought it had gone well,’ says Mark, ‘but I felt like a nervous wreck’. After a second interview, Mark was offered an unconditional place on his chosen degree course. As Mark was still undergoing treatment, he took the decision to defer the course until the following year ‘in order to acclimatise myself with life in the real world.’
himself back into education by participating in the Aberystwyth Summer University Program.
A few months later, Mark was back in the ‘real world’ and after a discussion with the University, he decided to ease
Mark is still aware of the hard work ahead, saying that ‘the temptation to return to the only life I knew previously is often great, but with the support of my mentors, plus my new friends and Uni colleagues, I’m confident that I’ll achieve my long-term goal of sobriety, serenity and a top degree!’

MARK ATKINSON Dysgwr Addysg Uwch y Flwyddyn 2009 Aberystwyth University Bu astudio Saesneg yn y Brifysgol yn freuddwyd i Mark Atkinson gydol ei oes, fodd bynnag nid oedd erioed wedi teimlo’n ‘ddigon da’ i gyflawni ei nod. Cafodd ei fywyd ei ddifetha gan gyffuriau ac alcohol, ond pan oedd yn cael triniaeth ar gyfer ei ddibyniaeth, penderfynodd Mark newid pethau a chwilio am ffordd o wneud ei fywyd yn fwy gwerth chweil a boddhaol. Arweiniodd hyn at sgwrs am lenyddiaeth gyda chynrychiolydd ar ymweliad o TRAC, asiantaeth sy’n cynorthwyo rhai sy’n gadael gofal. Bu’n sgwrs a newidiodd fywyd Mark am byth. Ar ôl ei sgwrs gyntaf, aeth Mark am gyfweliad am le ym Mhrifysgol Aberystwyth. ‘Roeddwn i’n meddwl iddo fynd yn dda,’ meddai Mark, ‘ond roeddwn yn swp sâl gyda nerfau’. Fodd bynnag, gwelodd Dr Sue Pester, a roddodd gyfweliad i Mark, botensial ynddo nad oedd ef ei hunan erioed wedi ei gydnabod. Ar ôl ail gyfweliad, cynigiwyd lle diamod i Mark ar y cwrs gradd a ddewisodd. Gan fod Mark yn dal i ddilyn triniaeth, penderfynodd ohirio’r cwrs tan y flwyddyn ddilynol ‘er mwyn ymgyfarwyddo gyda bywyd yn y byd go iawn’. Ychydig fisoedd wedyn, roedd Mark yn ôl yn y ‘byd go iawn’ ac ar ôl trafodaeth gyda’r Brifysgol, penderfynodd
lacio’i hun yn ôl i addysg drwy gymryd rhan yn rhaglen Haf Prifysgol Aberystwyth. Mae Mark yn dweud ei fod yn dal i fod yn ymwybodol o’r gwaith caled o’i flaen gan ddweud fod ‘llawer o demtasiwn weithiau i ddychwelyd i’r unig fywyd roeddwn yn gwybod amdano o’r blaen, ond gyda chefnogaeth fy mentoriaid a fy ffrindiau newydd a fy nghydweithwyr yn y Brifysgol, rwy’n hyderus y byddaf yn cyflawni fy nod tymor-hir o fod yn sobr, yn dawel fy myd ac ennill gradd dda!’
