PAGE 1 My coursework covered certain projects such as the book project, artist analysis, editorial, logo project, narrative, gallery and essay. Our first task was to reflect on how achievements and weakness for our AS graphics coursework. Book prokect: During the book project our task was to design the front cover of a book in a design choice of your own and relate it an artists style. I chose Leon Ferrari’s work as my artist research and focused his designs in relation to typogrpahy sizes. During my experimentation my book cover wasn’t neat and professionally finalised to perfection like ordinary published books. The messy parts were connecting the corners togetherr. But after a few practise rounds I got their in the end. I thought very carfeully about the choice of colour and material, I chose to go for a black background base and a stripey fabricated overlayer. My book was based on urbanism and graffiting. So I added white block bold but sophisticated typography and composed each lettering diagonallly in line with the fabric. My final outcome was a graffiti freestyle book. I had done some development drawing designs as my intial starting point in relation to my chosen artist for my starting point. My weakness in this project I would note is that my artist design didn’t clearly connect direclty with my final design. If I had the chance to change anything it would be communicate my idea across in a smart way. My book project could be used for the art and design department in book and be published in stores promoting and demonstrating how to design your own graffiti designs.
PAGE 2 Editorial Design: I was highly impressed with my interest level for editorial design. I think that this was the best project for me as my strengths were personally, my composition, balancing, typography and layout design. Although, `I was inspired by existing editorial design I had originality in my ‘Regenerating Britain’ zine. By this I was working around the software and literally playing about. A lot of experimentation and positive thinking went through this as I was deisgning. My artist responce strongly linked well with this project as I had done some experimentation in my artists style to acknowledge if this style would work appropriately to my design. My weakness during this project was my documentation page. At first I didn’t know how I could approach it and keep each page flowing but I experimented and took my time. Eventually I came out with a pretty professional outstanding piece than I had started with. As I mentioned earlier my best project was the editorial design, I think has to be this one as I seemed more interested and could see that my work looked very clean and smooth. My souces of primary images helped me with my experimentation. I chose Rishi Sodha’s work, I like the use of typography and overlayering the size and boldness of text. I researched into existing urban magazines for inspirations such as Urban magazine for inspiration. My editorial was aimed at young people in field of talent in music, dance, fashion, and technology. I based it on teenagers as the target market . My magazines could be published in the real world and be used for advertising and posters. Gallery: Visiting galleries and exhibitions in my spare time during the summer hol-
PAGE 3 iday and taking random pictures of what I liked helped me get some starting points to what I could focus my projects on. Some of the visits were made to the V&A, Science Museum, Scattchi Museum, Tate Modern, London Transport Museum. Artists: Studying different artists is a source of analysing their work and understanding their creative pieces and critically observing their inspirations and using their work to help you with yours. My strongest point in artist research is having a variety of artists that worked in different ways and used different methods to create their final pieces, some specify in paintings, illustrations, graphic designs etc. I used each artist in most of my projects but in a different manner. Narrative: I would probably note that this was my most weakest project. Personally in my opinion, I think that this is because I lacked concerntration to move forward and focused more on other projects. I started off well with the ‘Paul Smith’ artist research. However, from here onwards I was thinking ahead of time and trying to picture my final outcome and see what I could include and how it could demonstrate narrative. My strengths was the ability to be analytical with the artist research. On the other hand, my weakness was being creative and experimneting in the style of Paul Smith. My idea of doing a complex and difficult those covering a scientific aspect of one’s life cycle. and should have simplified it to facilitate my project faster and delay my experimentaioiin process. This is what I would change. My final outcome was zines displaying a timeline of one’s lifestyle from a illustrator of line drawings of existing images of different
PAGE 4 age groups. In the real world I reckon my narrative piece could be used for educational purposes, informing students something related to subjects like personal development and science. Essay: I strongest point was connecting my essay one of my previous projects which made it easy t start and nagivate more research points. However, I hadn’t realised that the chosen project I had related my essay to was in fact my weakest this delayed my investigation to evaluating my question of ‘How narrative is used to manipulate the way audiences read pictures?’. This question was brainstormed into a mind map; I progressed to thinking about it in ‘How graphics is used through the source of technology?’, ‘What other alternative ways can audiences read pictures that demonstrate narrative, like dioramas and pop-up books?’ a more literate and three dimensional manner, moreoever, I thought of how audience would read narrative in the oldern days and how they didn’t have coloured television and would wattch animated pictures through projectioin. So, here I figured out ‘How audiences would read narrative using projectors and animated drawings to read pictures?. Furthermore, I analysed the way theatre production is another way audiences read narrative from performances in drama and arts. ‘How lighting, sound and green screen effect is important to potray emotion for audiences to understand the narrative and read pictures clearly. The essay was to be illustrated, being so focused on evaluating the question I had forgotten to co-operate some images at first, but eventually put some appropriate images to relate with what I had commented on. If I was ever to change anything regarding my essay it would have to be the project I had referred to from Narrative to Editorial deisgn. Reason is due to the successful progression in the Editorial design. Progression over the year:
PAGE 5 My attitude to learning before was very negative which definently lead to a horrible result for my AS graphics coursework. I had so many incomplete work that needed finishing this resulted in me having to re-sit that module. My final outcome wasn’t professional enough or of at a high standard. I lacked development and experiment skills. Nevertheless, over the year, I skills have grown and matured through my creativity and thinking process and remained positive. Continously chanllenging myself and using what I had collected during the summer 2011 as my starting point. for any of the projects. I am definently pleased with the transformationi of minding thinking and believe I will achieve much higher than expected and of last year. Logo project: The logo project was an extended project. Our tasks was to re-design a logo for chosen theme, my chosen theme was based on radio statsions. I researched different radio station genres and analysed the graphical logo designs and communicated the good and bad about it. My strenths in this project was my strive to researching different genres and basing the project of something I enjoy listening to everyday. In addition, my strengths were also the designing of the logo structure and experimenting; keeping it look fresh, young and new. My weekness would probably be looking for appropiate layer designs to suit for it for example putting it up on posters. But looking at existing radio station related posters I got an idea of how I could manipulate it into a poster design. I doubt I would change anything about this project. In the real world my logo project designs would be used for promotion and entertainment on posters and bill boards.
