Precedent Studies Architects: YYA Location: Maldives Project Year: 2015 Finolhu Villas 100% solar powered project. Will accommodate about 100 guests year round. All solar panels are able to be seen by guests and are used as an architectural element. Guest rooms are designed to minimize energy consumption. Operable windows are strategically placed in order to maximize air ventilation. Planes or boats access all of the resorts. Goal was to make the location feel as if it blends into the previous location.

Design Implications - The use of sustainable materials and practices when designing the hotel will be important because Aruba plans to be solely reliative on wind power in the near future. - By using windows and open ventilation between spaces this will promote air ventilation as well as light brought into the interior of the building.

Architects: Elastic Architects Location: Creta, Greece Project Year: 2018 Area: 6700 m2 Mitsis Rinela Beach Resort & Spa The goal of this hotel was to highlight the high aesthetic and hospitality. The simple design is highlighted by greek elements that dictate function of spaces. Light with shadow, natural materials, and unobstructed views were important. Different materials textures create different shadows which create an ever changing environment. A tall entrance, central fountain and open fireplace are the 3 key points within the main building. There is an unobstructed view of the ocean. The mixture of natural materials lets one area flow into the next. Marble used in the pools was also used around the centralized building to promote unification of the spaces.

Design Implications - Using the view to the advantage and getting the most out of it is important when designing the spaces of the hotel. - The use of materials and their natural aspects is important when correlating the concept with the materials. - The mix of a luxury stay with the classic beach elements promotes this sense of relaxation and will be a prominent design aspect.

Architects: Onion Location: Ko Samui, Ko Samui District, Surat Thani, Thailand Project Year: 2018 Area: 10,757 m2 SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort Every room at SALA has a private pool and sea view. There is a 52 room beach front phase with 3 levels of rooms. On the other side of the road, there is a 85 room roadside phase. There is also 2 presidential villas and 4 pool villas. Everything is designed to enhance the sequence of light, shadow and shade. The design process started by thinking of what guests would like to see and how would they like to live while they were there. The courtyard has no control over circulation and this is to promote guests being able to sit anywhere they would like, as well as the pool being a circle to allow for this as well. The pool lights mimic moon light. The sea view is never blocked, even in the lobby which gives a sense of luxury. The facade is long and white to mimic the crescent shadows. They used local materials and everyday objects but make them appear special.

Design Implications - The use of light and shadow could create more interest in spaces that are more interior such as the spa area, so by incorporating a variety of light and architectural elements this could be achieved. - The spherical shape of the stair case can relate back to the concept of sea grapes as well as the rounded corners of the furniture pieces. This brings the ideas together and creates a more cohesive flow.

Precedent Studies Architects: Conran and Partners Location: Krakow, Poland Project Year: 2018 Area: 12,644 m2 PURO Krakรณw Kazimierz Hotel Fusion of energy, history, authenticity, and culture of location (Bohemian). Created a welcoming feel with indoor/outdoor areas promoting guests to enjoy the hotel and its hospitality. Street frontage bakery that connects inside of the hotel, as well as a restaurant with locally sourced ingredients. Material choices are chosen to represent the industrial areas as well as the new art galleries in the city. Guest rooms have large windows that bring in lots of light.

Design Implications - Correlating the location with the design of the space will be important when thinking of Aruba and its climate variables. The climate will tell what materials are best for the space as well as windows and outdoor-indoor spaces. - This being a boutique hotel, making the space unique and a destination spot for those visiting will be important. Creating a special space like a spa into the hotel design will set it apart from other hotels in the area.
