The Harvest River Bridge is a traditional tied cable arch bridge spanning 180 feet across the Neponset River. The bridge is the second of its kind in Massachusetts, alongside the Blue Heron Bridge in Newton, MA. When it was constructed, it required two cranes to lift the basket handle structure into place.

BRIDGE DECK & RAILING
BASE STRUCTURE Constructed in 2017, the bridge is composed of several components – a basket handle arch, ipe wood bridge deck and railing, and the base supporting structure, which rests on the banks of the Neponset river. The arches are pinned to foundations on either side of the bridge, which provide horizontal resistance to the thrust arches. The horizontal and vertical forces are resolved at the arches as illustrated below.

The Neponset River stretches over 30 miles and is bordered on either side by a layered community of hydrophyllic vegetation that serves several purposes. The trees and plants protect the aquatic environments from excessive sedimentation, filter polluted surface runoff, and guard against erosion of the riverbank. These trees and shrubs are particularly well-suited for moist soil and the thick grasses, thickets of shrubs and various tree species provide ecological habitats for birds and other wildlife.The Neponset Trail Greenway project took special measures to protect and enhance the river’s edge with planting.
