ew year resolutions get a bad press to my mind. People are always proudly declaring that they never make them. I think I can understand why, they always seem to be about giving up something, normally something we really, really enjoy. But instead of looking for something to ‘give up’ perhaps we should be looking for something to ‘take up’ instead. Hopefully this issue is full of all sorts of things that you might have always wanted to have a go at, but for whatever reason haven’t got around to. You might have always fancied making your own furniture or trying your hand at welding perhaps. If so Blackhorse Workshop (page 12) have all the equipment and courses you could ever ask for. Maybe you’ve always wanted to sing, or at least find out if you could sing, so read about our Local Hero Lizzy and her array of choirs on page 24. If you’re between 14 and 19 you might fancy having a go at acting, writing or directing. In which case see page 14 for details of the Soho Theatre’s January theatre courses. If however you can’t be persuaded to try something new and are free of any New Year promises to cut out drinking, preferring a night at your local pub with a friend or friends to one down the gym getting a new bod for 2015, then you might appreciate Richard Ashman’s celebration of the local boozer on page 18. What’s more if you love your local may I offer a final suggestion for a New Year’s resolution: see more music locally this year and support your local while you’re doing it. Why not start with Janus Sounds’ line up of world class acts appearing throughout 2015 (see page 16) at Hoe Street’s Rose and Crown. It’s an easy resolution to keep up too with our listings full of everything from jazz to classical. Finally for a borough with as much creative energy as ours our feature on Wood Street Walls quotes a truly shocking statistic – we have only 78 art studios in Waltham Forest as opposed to Hackney’s 1,150. Wood Street Walls is looking to establish a new creative space in Walthamstow in reaction to so many people losing their studios to high rents and redevelopment, and are using crowdfunding site Spacehive to raise the cash. Please read more about the project and how to get involved on page 21. Happy new year for 2015! Paul Lindt, Editor editor@theelist.co.uk

COVER STAR

Anthony Roussel Waltham Forest is home to many designer/makers. One of the more unusual I’ve come across is this month’s cover star, Anthony Roussel. Originally a jewellery designer he is now producing decorative and innovative designs in wood to adorn interiors. Here he talks about his work. I create sculptural surfaces in wood. I have developed a collection of intricate decorative panels for commercial and residential environments. The concept is focused on working with wood in innovative ways. My surface designs are aimed at interior designers and architects but I also deal directly with private clients. I have a 3D range and

an inlaid range with brightly coloured stained wood. These are also available as table tops. I started my career as a jewellery artist and then moved into furniture and lighting. My new 3D surface work is a progression of all these disciplines but one thing that remains is the use of wood as my specialism.

Atelier Anthony Roussel

www.anthonyroussel.com

Working a lot with photography as a tool to develop patterns, these are then translated into repeated forms which are cut into wooden layers. They are then meticulously bonded into sculptural relief form. For now I have a home studio but I plan to be using the Blackhorse workshop this year as I live locally.

info@anthonyroussel.com

If people want to see my new surface designs then they can be viewed at the Material Lab studio, 10 Great Titchfield Street, London W1W 8BB. Phone: 020 7436 8629. Email: info@material-lab.co.uk 9.00am-5.30pm, MondayFriday.

Walthamstow a poem by Iva Petrova Walthamstow you renew my sense of hope In your nest of multi-colours I find a place where my soul can grow Your paths are always alight Even the grim, surrounded by despair. Foxes lounge in my garden and figs grow bigger than fists. There’s an aching to explore And if ever a place could be my home I would proudly call you my own. You bear no judgment And being a bull in a china shop Makes more sense than being a dime a dozen. I learn more truth from falling in your playground And being so far from the familiar Doesn’t affect my desire to reach for the stars. Iva is 21 and from Bulgaria, but raised in Cape Town. She moved to London for the first time when she was 18 and returned last year. She says “This time I have the luck of living and working in Walthamstow. This makes a big difference. The poem is about how I don’t think of Walthamstow as a place, territory. To me it’s about the people, it’s about the sense of being a part of something. Being a part of something, yet being allowed to express yourself, to learn and grow.”

Services & Facilities The space offers a range of different affordable membership packages to suit everyone from the commercial and professional maker, to the casual DIY user. Bench space is available to book on a ‘pay as you go’ basis by the day or the month, and there’s a regular series of induction programmes to ensure you feel safe using the tools and machinery. We also offer oneto-one technical support to help turn your projects into reality, or to learn a particular skill, for example TIG welding or mastering joinery. The workshop also runs a fabrication service. We’ve made giant pencils to be turned into lamps, custom designed office furniture, art installations and DIY projects ranging from eco-kitchens to building spit roasts.

If you’re looking to revive some old skills, maybe forgotten or a little rusty, or learn some new ones or just for a friendly somewhere where you can make or fix stuff then this the place for you. But according to Harriet Warden, the workshop’s Creative Director, this is just the beginning. Here she tells the E List more. Blackhorse Workshop opened last year in a former industrial building off Blackhorse Lane with the aim of providing a new kind of public space for making and mending. The space offers ‘pay as you go’ access to wood and metalwork machinery and the space to build or fix anything, from planters to stage sets, bikes and furniture. We now have over 150 regular members, run a series of beginner woodwork and metalwork courses and provide start up studio space for twenty new creative enterprises. Since September, we’ve run a monthly street food and makers market supporting local craftspeople and an emerging hub of food entrepreneurs. The workshop is also home to Wood Street Coffee who run our fantastic café as well as Left Bank Brewery; an on- site micro brewery and bakery. Background The project was originally commissioned by Waltham Forest Council and given start up funding by CREATE, the GLA Outer London 12

Fund and the Olympic Legacy Trust UK. The building was converted by the award winning architecture and design collective Assemble, and with a small but ambitious team taking it on, a fantastic space is emerging. From carpenters to metalworkers, architects to designers, furniture upholsterers to motorbike mechanics – the workshop is helping to solve the issue of access to machinery and expertise that is currently lost after leaving school or college, and bridges the lonely world of the creative startup by offering a network of advice and support. Essentially it’s filling the technical knowledge gap that skipped a generation and is helping to hold onto manual skills that the digital world is letting slip by but that are proving so important to understanding how to approach design. It’s encouraging people to rediscover these lost skills, whether as creative hobbies, for moneysaving home improvements, or as valuable resources in our construction and manufacturing trades.

We work with kids of all ages, and offer regular drop in activities at our monthly market. To date these have ranged from Indiana Jones style stone carving to helping to construct the first ever Blackhorse Burning Man for a spectacular bonfire night. The workshop’s activities also proved to be a major hit at the Walthamstow Garden Party last summer, delivering industrial style hobbyhorses to hundreds of eager children. Courses & Training Our evening short courses are designed to help you progress from the absolute basics through to mastering the skills to venture out on your own projects. So it might be learning the art of basic furniture making joints to understanding how to TIG weld, or on a practical level how to tackle common DIY problems. We bring in specialist makers to teach you how to get started working with particular materials such as stone or leather, alongside showing you the best suppliers and basic equipment to use. Who Comes? The best thing about the workshop is the range of people who use it - from novice through to professional, it’s quickly become

As part of our education programme we’ve delivered innovative skills training together with project partners like Punch Drunk and Animaux Circus where we’ve built theatre sets, music festival signage and taught furniture making from reclaimed wood. We’ve held making challenges such as ‘Take a Mallet to a Pallet’ where entries have resulted in some incredible pieces from telescopes to hand turned rounders bats!

an amazing community who generously share their skills and knowledge. It attracts a real mix of ages from the recent graduate through to retired professionals all with very different skills and reasons for using the workshop. And with a growing computer dependent lifestyle, the workshop is providing an outlet for anyone keen to escape the keyboard grind. The studios have already attracted some of London’s most exciting emerging design talent, with residents such as the Lola Lely Studio who have recently collaborated with Allen Jones for his retrospective at the Royal Academy and are working on a new commission for the Architecture Foundation. There’s some really great projects happening. One of our members, a chef and part-time welder has converted a horsebox into a new street food sausage business ‘VOL: Dutch

Smokery’ complete with smokery built at the workshop, and another bitten by the blacksmithing bug is now producing beautiful hand forged kitchen knives. How to get started If you’ve got something you’d like to fix or build then the best way to get started is to come and have an induction, which we run on a weekly basis on alternate Fridays or Saturdays. Or you can get in touch to arrange an appointment to chat through your ideas with one of our technicians. You can also sign up to our mailing list to keep up to date on our all our events, courses and activities.

Soho Theatre’s Young Theatremakers Soho Theatre’s work in Walthamstow goes further than the former Granada – their education projects offer local young people the chance to take part in a range of exciting workshops from January. During the last week of October, a group of 20 young people from Walthamstow, all aged between 11 and 18, some of whom had never taken part or performed in any theatre before, created a show about food and memories of their favourite meals. Complete with fake-moustachioed waiters, a band playing away in the background and some of the best mime food they’d ever tasted, the audience were treated to a menu of stories set in restaurants and kitchens.

as a comedy, theatre and entertainment venue, Soho Theatre will also be bringing their education work to the borough, including Soho Young Theatremakers – weekly workshops for ages 14-19, Soho Young Playwrights – playwriting for under 11s in Walthamstow primary schools, and NT Connections – a programme delivered in conjunction with the National Theatre which Leyton Sixth Form College are involved in this year, performing on stage at Soho Theatre.

This was the first of Soho Theatre’s education workshops in Waltham Forest – a taster week of their Young Theatremakers course which will take place weekly on Thursday nights from January. As part of their work to re-open the former Granada

Steve Marmion, Soho Theatre’s Artistic Director said: “You may have noticed Soho Theatre popping up around Walthamstow recently. As you might know, we are hoping to open

an exciting new venue in the former Granada cinema on Hoe Street. As a warm up, and to really get to know you better, we have loads of different projects around the place. What we are doing is bringing tailor made versions of the work we already do in the West End with young people, the community and new artists. We had a brilliant time with our half term project working with local young people. And that’s just the start. From our under 11s playwriting in schools, through to holiday projects and theatre and comedy workshops, we hope to have a taster of everything we do somewhere nearby.”

If you’re aged 14 to 19 you can sign up for Soho Young Theatremakers online at www.sohotheatre.com/young-people For more information on any of Soho Theatre’s education work in Waltham Forest visit www.sohotheatre.com/young-people or email jules@sohotheatre.com 14

Educating the East End - a student’s view Last month The E List visited Frederick Bremer School and talked to some of the teachers and students about their experience with the school the subject of Channel 4’s Educating the East End. We also sent questions to Charlie, one of the students featured in the series, who left FB last summer for Sixth Form. Unfortunately due to college work he couldn’t get us his answers in time for the main feature, but as they were so good we wanted to include them this month. On the first day everyone was extremely conscious of the cameras, how they turned and looked at you suddenly in the middle of a lesson was unnerving in a very funny way. The students were understandably excited at first and therefore acted up a little bit, but it was only a week or so before we started to forget about the cameras. As far as I saw the staff all behaved normally and no teachers suddenly became much kinder or caring! Of course I was not taught by everyone but I can honestly say all the teachers shown in the series are always like that, they just happen to be genuinely lovely. The series showed several of the non-teaching members of staff at Bremer which was good as they are some of the most important. In my case if I hadn’t been sent to Ms Austin and Ms Yildiran to try and help with my anxiety

attacks there is no way I would have made it into school every day, let alone complete my GCSEs and make it to and enjoy sixth form. These members of staff dedicate time, in my case many hours, to ensuring students who are struggling in any aspect can be supported and helped to have as normal a school experience as possible. At Bremer, these staff are crucial and we could not survive without them. The student/staff and inter-student relationships are genuinely as strong as they came across in the programme, I don’t think you could edit them out actually. Of course news spreads around a community as small as a secondary school but the students at Bremer have time and time again shown their willingness and innate desire to help and comfort anyone going through rough times. The family spirit at that school is superb and

really makes everyone feel so secure. Both staff and students alike know they are in a safe environment as soon as they walk through those gates. Watching the show back was as strange and outer body experience as I have ever had, but thankfully the main reason it was so odd was I feel like a completely different person to the boy struggling to breath outside that history classroom. At the time I was desperately hoping that by the time the programme aired I would be feeling much better, and therefore I could use the episode as a sort of closure on a not particularly happy time. Luckily I have improved considerably and I was able to reflect on the events with real pride. I am relieved I agreed to take part as I will always have the series as a reminder of how much I love that school, despite a tricky last year.

Janus Sounds - bringing music to Walthamstow in 2015 Janus Sounds is bringing top musical talent to Walthamstow in 2015 including Evan Parker and Marcus Bonfanti for their ‘End of the Line’ series. They’d love to hear from you on who else they should bring up the Victoria Line!

2015 is the year in which Janus Sounds hopes to become better known to the citizens of Walthamstow. Janus Sounds started in 2013 as a record label headquartered in Walthamstow, set up by two friends - George StewartLockhart and Stephen Vitkovitch - with a shared vision of bringing old and new music to the market - hence the reference in the company’s name to the Roman god Janus (appropriate for the January issue of E-List!) with two heads looking backwards and forwards. Their roster is modest with four acts. George explains how one of the highlights of their initial few releases was working with veteran bass guitarist Tony Reeves (with British jazz band Big Chief on 16

the label) who played on and produced ‘The Valentyne Suite’ by progressive jazz rockers Colosseum, cited by both founders as a favourite album. Tony passed through the British Blues school that is John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, replacing John McVie who had left to join world-beaters Fleetwood Mac. Tony has produced the label’s latest release, an album by Big Chief (‘Blues in Twos’) of music recently unearthed from recordings by the band in 1982 featuring renowned saxophonist Dick Heckstall-Smith to mark ten years since his passing. Other acts on the label include Psyche Bugyo, an offshoot of cult Japanese psych rockers Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso U.F.O, and solo saxophonist and flautist

Ryoko Ono formerly with Acid Mothers. However, Janus Sounds haven’t been exclusively focused on releasing music, they’ve also brought Italian Klezmer act Minimal Klezmer to Walthamstow for a couple of concerts (The Jewish Music Institute note that Klezmer is music that was played at Jewish weddings). Both events packed out The Mill, and the first event had London Jazz News reviewer Andy Boeckstaens commenting “nothing could have prepared me for the live experience”. The success of these events convinced Stephen and George, joined by George’s brother Ed in 2014, to divide the company’s efforts to focus on live music too. Their assessment was that there was a significant

appetite for good music in Walthamstow but also a relatively limited choice, and set about trying to put together an offering to fill the gap in the market, building on their experience of launching a night dubbed ‘The Triptych’ in West London which featured Henri Herbert, pianist of the recently dissolved Jim Jones Revue with support from Tommy Hare and Freddy Keen, as well as records selected by Nicky Francis of Goldheart Assembly. In 2015 they will be bringing a range of well established artists to the Borough in a series of concerts titled ‘End of the Line’. They arrived at the title after engaging in an open discussion with the various Walthamstow focused Facebook groups - one

title suggested was a misspelt ‘Walthamstow Swings’! At present the ‘End of the Line’ series is looking as follows: – On Friday 23 January legendary Free Jazz saxophonist Evan Parker will play at Ye Olde Rose and Crown. Stewart Lee writing in The Guardian described Evan as “the greatest living exponent of free improvisation”. Cheap Early Bird tickets for this event have sold out, but Advance price tickets are still available, or more on the door. – On Friday 17 April Marcus Bonfanti, winner of the 2013 & 2014 British Blues Awards ‘Best Acoustic Performer’ and the man behind Classic Rock Magazines’ top 5 Blues Albums of 2013 will be playing, also at at

Ye Olde Rose and Crown. Cheap Early Bird tickets for this are still available at the time of going to print. Tickets for all events can be found at www.janussounds.com. Discussions are underway with other acts with a view to bringing them up the Victoria Line and more acts are expected to be confirmed in due course. The guys are open to suggestions (info@janussounds.com) and would love to hear from you! Words by Sarah Burden, concert photos by Sam Churchill Photography, posters by George Stewart-Lockhart.

headed upstairs to test their cinematic grey matter in the McGuffins film quiz. In a corner sat a poor chap who made the place his daytime home thanks to the kindly staff, and at the bar a regular recalled sheltering from bombs during the Second World War at the nearby Granada cinema. My head was spinning trying to take all this in – and I hadn’t even had a drink yet. But before I could, I made way for a group leaving a function room with their bicycles. As they passed I studied posters promoting forthcoming shows in the theatre upstairs and mulled over a pile of leaflets advertising local events and good causes. As a failed pub under previous management a few years ago its customers made little complaint when it ran out of beer for days on end. Now a poll in The Londonist has voted it the best boozer in E17.

Before we allow local pubs be lost to supermarkets and flats Richard Ashman asks that we take a moment to think about their significance for our lives and communities and why a London without locals would be a very sorry place indeed. Photography by Simon Goodwin. There must be something in the British character that gave us pubs. Maybe they provided the ideal outlet for an emotionally repressed nation that was suspicious of foreigners and thought sex was a dirty word. If we couldn’t take our minds off the miserable weather by making the world’s best puddings, we could always cheer ourselves up by escaping to the local ale house, tavern or inn. Today you could argue that pubs just can’t compete against the cheaper alternative of shop-bought booze and the lure of the modern home with its 50 inch plasma TV, state of the art sound system, posh coffee maker, endless gadgets, funky wall art, designer light fittings and underfloor heating. Who would want to leave those creature comforts for a potentially tiresome journey to a slightly battered building where you 18

risk brushing against volatile strangers, have someone else’s taste in music forced upon you and face the horrors of unsanitary toilets? If statistics and predictions are anything to go by, pubs are now battling for their very survival. As their numbers continue to shrink, many thousands have been converted to apparently more profitable use. But can you put a price on their valuable service to society? A typical afternoon scene in a Wetherspoons suggests they can provide as good a social comfort blanket for the old and lonely as a charity or council service. Entering Ye Olde Rose and Crown on Hoe Street one evening (passing the delicious aroma of Peppe’s pizza on the way in) I spotted a deaf couple communicating with sign language, while behind them some youths were playing pool. Near them punters tapped their toes to a live band while a crowd

Pubs offer a neutral space where folk can unshackle their shyness with alcohol, escape a tense atmosphere at home, unburden the pressures of life and just be themselves, someone that glows under low lighting and feels happier with the smattering of bonhomie from fellow patrons. They can be the ideal place to gossip about a locally cherished institution - perhaps one that was formed in the pub itself. How many marriages and friendships began in a pub, or decisions get made affecting local life? The hubbub in a pub can help set in motion exciting ideas and plans that wouldn’t so readily come to mind sitting at a sterile table in a cafe or living room. Pubs remove the mental straightjacket. They don’t judge. So cheers to the twenty or so pubs left in Walthamstow today. Some may be a little unsophisticated and frayed at the edges and if you don’t drink alcohol they could appear somewhat irrelevant. However their enormous contribution to our cultural life is invaluable. Social media is great but being together is unbeatable. That’s why pubs have been with us for a thousand years. They’re the home of the subversive, entertaining, randomness of humanity and help nourish the soul.

In praise of the British boozer

When stood in an old pub I sometimes imagine the ghosts of previous patrons that imbibed there in decades past. Old photos of busy street scenes exude a vibrant world of fancy lamp posts, well dressed pedestrians, elaborate shop fronts and trams advertising Bisto. The same streets today look dull compared to those exotic images of yesteryear, but there still exists within the walls of a good pub some of that richness of life, both past and present.

Home is where the art is New community project Wood Street Walls brings streetart to Walthamstow together with an innovative scheme to provide a new creative space for local artists. Photography by Mark Rigney. The project will also provide a creative outlet for local and established artists to publicly showcase their work through murals, as well as free art workshops for local residents. The photographs show the first piece, a mural designed by E17 residents Tom Jackson and Craig Evans, artistic duo Static, which was erected last month in Ravenswood Industrial Estate. It has already caught the attention of local media, with Wood Street Walls founder Mark Clack invited to talk about the project and debate the benefits of street art on BBC Radio London. After reading the Artist Workspace Study, commissioned by the mayor of London that showed there are only 78 art studios in Waltham Forest, compared to the 1,150 in neighbouring borough Hackney, Mark decided

Fear is stalking that delightful enclave in Walthamstow known as “Poets Corner”. To look at the neat Victorian and Edwardian facades, the welltended gardens and the floral displays that brighten up many a commuter’s walk to the dreaded Victoria Line, one would be forgiven in thinking “pure delight.” There’s young Ivanovic on his mobile - “No earphones today Ivan?” as we all benefit from the latest offerings of Jay Z. Old Mr. and Mrs. Smith are shuffling down Tower Hamlets Road on their way to Paddy Power in the High Street hoping to recoup the pension money they lost last week. FI scouts are out looking for new circuits as they hammer up Aubrey Road, chicane into Milton and throw a hard right into Brown’s and its (in)famous pot holed section. Ah, there’s the Browns (and the Jones) both trying to claim the last permit parking space in the road. The Jones, having recently upgraded to a Chieftain tank, gently but firmly push the Brown’s surprisingly small looking (badge less) Audi A4 out of the way.

The unbounded joy that followed the opening of the Empire cinema, and the new eateries is now replaced by the realization that their beloved car parking space is under threat from out-oftownies. Outlandish cinemagoers desperately seeking somewhere to park their 4X4s while they nosh at Nandos and catch the latest movie release at “The Scene”. To the rescue comes our Council. By extending parking restrictions, out-of-townies risk a fine should they dare park in our beloved streets and go and enjoy themselves! All hail our municipal champions. Words: Marginalia

Nothing unusual there then... except behind each Farrow and Balled front door families are in tumult.

LOCAL HERO

Lizzy Renihan Many readers will already know this month’s local hero from her choir Natural Voices who regularly appear at fundraising and social events around the area. However this is just one of the choirs she’s involved with, all singing out across the country from Surrey to the Isle of Mull. Miraculously she finds time to talk to Paul Lindt.

24

Lizzy was photographed in the former Modern College of Drama and Music on Orford Road where The Natural Voices Choir original started and still rehearse. It is now a private house and the home of the Cordon Verve Cookery School.

finest performers at The Majestic Theatre. It was such an honour but so moving to lose such a great man. Having the opportunity to work with Stephen Swartz who wrote the musical Wicked was incredible. He believed in me and gave me my first West End solo . You have also toured Europe with the BBC and RTE Concert Orchestras and been a soloist on Radios 2 and 4. It gives the voice an incredible lift to sing with an eighty piece orchestra of this calibre in some of the greatest concert halls in Europe and in the Royal Festival Hall. I sang on Friday Night Is Music Night, a concert performed in front of a studio audience which goes out on air live with only one rehearsal. Terrifying but a real privilege. Grainne and I were interviewed for Woman’s Hour by Jenni Murray. She unexpectedly asked us to sing live on air which would have been a shock but I can sing anywhere if it’s with my big sis – she is amazing. How and why did you start working with choirs? I recently looked back on my new year resolution for 2009 and it says that I’d like to lead something creative which would have a positive influence on the community. I started Natural Voices in 2010 with a small group in

The Modern School Of Music in Orford Road Walthamstow. It was a relaxed and fun, group singing session. News of the group spread by word of mouth, numbers grew and it occurred to me that I was running a choir. At this point I had just had my second child and had given up my theatre career to bring up our family. I found choir leading and arranging totally fulfilling so I started more and more choirs and it’s now a full time job....and a half. You obviously see their potential as much more than a way to make music. Singing together in a choir is a very empowering and healing thing. We’re a strong community who are there for each other. Together, there is so much that we can give and so many ways that we can help others, especially by raising awareness, bringing people together and most of all helping charities who need us. Many people in the area may already have come across Natural Voices. Natural Voices Choirs are community choirs that I’ve created. My dad called us Natural Voice singers, which means that we learn by ear and sing using our natural voice. So, it was easy to come up with the name. We sing a mixture of contemporary music with my own vocal arrangements that enable every ability to join. There are no auditions. I believe

Are you an East Ender? No, I was born in Greenford in West London to Irish parents. My husband and I bought a Warner flat in Blackhorse Road (as it was affordable then) and just before we had our two children, we bought our house in Leyton. It was affordability which drew us to the area initially but it’s the amazing and creative community that have kept us here. We just feel at home here as artists and Londoners. You have a background in acting and obviously love music too. How did it all begin? Our dad was a wonderful Irish tenor and taught me, my 3 sisters and brother to sing. We were hilariously called The Von Trapps of Greenford. We used to sing at everything in our London Irish community. We were a family choir of six, all singing in harmony. I studied dance, drama and acting during school and went to LAMDA to study classical acting. My older sister Grainne and I both became professional musical theatre actors in the West End. All four sisters have sung professionally. You’ve since performed a lot in the West End… I understudied and played the role of Eponine in Les Miserables opposite my older sister who was playing Fantine. I was also in ‘Joseph’ and ‘Starlight Express’ the musical on skates. Other fond memories were playing Polly Peachum in The Beggar’s Opera for The Royal Shakespeare Company. I loved my years at The National Theatre playing various leads in plays and musicals and my favourite of all was playing Anna in the King And I on the UK tour opposite Kevin Gray who was a huge Broadway star. It was a book musical, so you can really play out your character within the play and the songs. Really demanding (especially as I was expecting my daughter Emily) but so fulfilling. Any anecdotes you’d like to share? Last year I was flown over to Broadway to sing a solo from The King And I at Kevin Gray’s Memorial Concert alongside Broadway’s

everyone should have the opportunity to sing, regardless of ability, we’re not about sounding perfect, we’re about enjoyment of singing and performing - taking the stuffiness out of choirs. You’ve expanded the concept to other areas. With the help of an amazing team of choir leaders who are colleagues from the West End, I have choirs in Surrey, the Isle Of Mull, Romford, South Woodford and Barnet. I run two adult choirs in Walthamstow and a junior and senior youth choir. I am due to expand further into North London and also Leyton in 2015. I’m lucky because my choir leaders love it as much as I do and want to run more sessions. You are also working with the Walthamstow Acoustic Massive I believe. I’m one of the creative directors alongside the wonderful musicians Dick Smith and Alison Jones. I run and arrange for the WAM choir and this year we are featuring a song that I’ve composed. I can’t wait to hear it played with 50 ukuleles, banjos and violins. Sounds like 2015 will be a busy year for you and the choirs. What else have you got planned? A small group of us performed of BBC3’s Don’t Tell The Bride and we’ve had so many enquiries that I’ve formed ‘Choir For

Hire’ so we are taking bookings throughout the year. For the community choirs it’s a full year of singing already. Expect a flash mob on Valentine’s; a short film and song for International Women’s Day; leading the St. Patrick’s Day Mayor’s Annual Fundraiser; Walthamstow Toy Library fundraising Fayre; the Alice Rose Fun Run for GOSH; the Eat Of Heat Food Bank fundraisers; The Teenage Cancer Trust Barnet; and the Natural Voices Annual Summer and Christmas concerts for all the community. Each choir leader will have their own programme of annual events in their community supporting charities close to their heart. You live in Leyton with your family. Tell us something about the area we really should know about but might not? My new favourite place is the gorgeous 1940’s style cafe called La Petite Robe Rose on Leyton High Road I’m hiring it for my vintage birthday drinks. Leyton has some of the best outdoor spaces in the borough which is fantastic for our two children. We’ve spent so much time in Brook’s Farm with our children. I even went into labour right by the pigsty.

Walthamstow Diary Between forest and marsh lies the glorious Stow. These are the tales and meanderings of a proud resident of E17 We had a friend staying with us recently, and he made what he thought was a pretty ingenius suggestion, “Why don’t you sell up and buy somewhere bigger outside of London?”. He isn’t the first to ask us that question, and he isn’t the first to give us a questioning look when we reply “we don’t want to move, we like it here”. Normally people leave it there, this friend however did not, he had clearly been thinking about this a great deal. He started listing all the reasons why we should move, bigger place, fewer people, more cows, we did our best not to yawn as he spoke. When he had finished his seemingly well-rehearsed speech, he then made a mistake and asked “What’s so special about Walthamstow anyway?” Now it was our turn to talk. I retrieved my 2015 Walthamstow calendar from the kitchen and put it on the table in front of him. The calendar, created by local artist Emma Scutt, has a local landmark on each page. Buildings such as the Chequers, the Lighthouse, Gods Own Junkyard, St Barnabas Church and the Assembly Hall fill its pages. As he flicked the calendar, I was telling him all about the places he was looking at. I explained that all of these varied places were all in Walthamstow, all of them within walking distance of home. His response “You get churches outside of London”, he was missing the point, he was proving resistant to the Wonders of E17. Words clearly were not working with him, so we took him for a walk, a long walk. Starting on the glorious marshes, our walk also took in the High Street, the Village, and ended at Cafe Bonito on Wood Street. Looking at us over his cup of hot chocolate, he said “Blimey, there’s lots of stuff here isn’t there”. He saved himself with that statement, he was close to being fed to the marsh bears on the way home, but he earned himself a reprieve. After a short pause, he said “I like Walthamstow”, job done I thought, job done. www.walthamstowdiary.com 26
