YEARS AGO Laura Kelly and Cris Thompson started something that has made a huge impression on a lot of people’s lives in Walthamstow. It was 2005 when they both organised the first E17 Art Trail, and also opted to make it fully inclusive, open to all. This masterstroke meant anyone from complete novices with a good idea; to weekend dabblers; to lapsed art students like me in need of motivation now had a reason to get creative and have fun. The Art Trail also revealed the talents of many of the area’s professional creatives like this month’s cover star Carne Griffiths. We were all showing together, we were all one community. This is one of the reasons the E17 Art Trail continues to be a masterpiece. I am therefore delighted to have one champion of E17’s artistic talent Penny Fielding interview another, the Art Trail’s Laura Kelly on page 18. Also see this month’s listings for a small selection from this year’s Trail. For the complete list hunt down the printed Trail guide or visit the website www.e17arttrail.co.uk This month sees the full introduction of the Mini Holland Scheme in Walthamstow Village. All eyes are now on the area to see how it will turn out as similar schemes will be rolled out across the borough in the coming months. Like residents Village businesses are divided in what they see as possible outcomes for the scheme, but April saw the traders on Orford Road form a united group to move things forward in a positive way. One of the first challenges the group faced was to say that the Village will be still be very much accessible to visitors and I began working on a new map. The resulting “Open for Business” can be seen on the back cover of this month’s E List, and hopefully makes the whole question of getting to and from local businesses a lot clearer. Next the group wants to move beyond Mini Holland and look at branding and promoting the area as a destination for quality shopping, eating and drinking, all provided by independent local traders. One of the highlights of the year so far in terms of social media has been the occasional posts of spoof news by Walthamstow Toss on Facebook. Whoever it is has pilloried everyone from the Council, local estate agents and of course Mini Holland, by using expertly crafted pastiches of BBC News, the Evening Standard and I’m proud to say the E List. When official-looking sources suggested that Labour MP Stella Creasy had decided to join UKIP because “she wanted to repel immigration by Stokies” and more importantly she “looked good in purple” some folks were up in arms! It wasn’t true of course and Stella took it in good humour. Anyway the mysterious Tosser has kindly submitted a special comic strip to our very own person (or bird) of mystery The Magpie for inclusion on this month’s page. Whether we will ever hear from Toss again who can say, but E List sends its thanks. Paul Lindt, Editor editor@theelist.co.uk

COVER STAR

Carne Griffiths years in the industry”. Thanks to Ken Carne went on to spend 12 years developing a career as an embroidery designer. He produced designs for the coronation of the king of Tonga and embroidery for films such as Phantom of the Opera, Valkyrie, and the Last King of Scotland. However by 2010 he was looking for another change, “I was keen to follow my own vision and see where a career in fine art would lead…” From then on he began to define his distinctive style which uses some unusual media, “I was always interested in the techniques pioneered by the surrealists, such as automatic drawing and calligraphy, so there was a lot of experimenting before I found my style. The involvement of tea and alcohol came about when I accidentally dipped my paintbrush in a glass of brandy instead of water while painting. I discovered the alcohol affected the ink differently, and the slight introduction of colour albeit in a very subtle way was new to my work. I then emulated the brandy colour using weak tea leading to experiments with other naturally coloured liquids. This made sense as my work focuses on nature and natural forms. I really like the idea of painting with a material that derives some of its colour from leaves.” Carne’s career as an painter has gone from strength to strength, and the idea that he is now making a living as an artist constantly surprises him. “It’s something that I always wanted as a child but as I got older I never really considered it to be a possibility. It was only after working for 12 years as an embroidery designer that I had the confidence to make the change.”

Carne’s unique style of work will be a familiar sight to many through previous E17 Art Trails. Normally working on paper, this year he is going large scale with plans for a mural to be painted on the corner of Hoe Street and Jewel Road. Always one for a challenge Carne says “I will be painting live throughout the first weekend of the trail but hopefully the piece will be there for people to see long after the trail has finished.”

Originally from Liverpool, Carne studied illustration at college but following his move to London he found himself moving into the textile industry, initially at Emerson Nelmes, a trimmings firm in Leyton. He was then approached by a hand embroidery firm in Soho offering him a position as a draughtsman. “I worked a 2 year apprenticeship under the watchful eye of a wonderfully talented gentleman, Ken Miles, who was preparing to retire after nearly 60

Career highlights so far for Carne have been a collaboration with photographer Rankin for Hunger Magazine and also his solo exhibition in Hong Kong with Coates and Scarry. Interview by Paul Lindt

Muslim Voices at Vestry House Visiting We Weren’t Expecting to Stay and Other Stories, a new exhibition about Muslim life in east London, feels like looking through someone’s family photograph album as they share their experiences and memories with you.

The exhibition is part of Khizra Foundation’s Everyday Muslim project. The project includes building an archive of Muslim life in Britain and increasing understanding of how Britain’s Muslim communities were established and have changed over time. So far the archive includes 30 oral history interviews and over 300 donated photographs. Exhibition organiser Sadiya Ahmed, of Khizra Foundation, says ‘The inspiration for the exhibition came from the realisation that our community wasn’t represented in museums or history books. The premise of not being able to know our own story and risk losing our heritage seemed a shame for future generations and local historians alike.’ There’s a wonderful intimacy to the photographs and stories on display and the ‘everyday’ nature of the activities that are explored make them easy to relate to. The images on show are both striking and poignant and stayed with me long after I’d left the exhibition. A pair of photographs – one of a group of people waving off family members at Nairobi Airport in Kenya, and one taken shortly after in Departures – show the contrast between the excitement and optimism of starting a new life and the emotional costs of leaving friends and family for an uncertain future. The exhibition focuses on the stories of Muslims who migrated from South Asia to London from the 1950s onwards. The reasons for migration are explored, along with some of the challenges and emotional implications. Direct quotes in speech bubbles

give an insight into what life was like for early migrants. Interviewees talk about subjects including work, finding suitable places to worship, establishing a new life in London and encountering and fighting racism. Most interviewees said their stay in Britain was intended to be short-lived but some, like Aga Rais Mirza who was born in Jaipur, India, in 1930 and arrived in London in 1960, decided to stay. He says: ‘In the end I gave up the idea of going back, and settled mentally and physically in this country. So I started buying a house…to look after my family because my wife was living here and you can’t live in a rented house. So this is how I started out.’ For me, one of the best aspects of the exhibition is that it brings history to life, linking the past to the present. As I left the museum and stood in the afternoon sunshine, I saw men making their way down Vestry Road to Friday prayers. I followed in their footsteps with the voices from the exhibition still echoing in my ears. Catherine Osborn

The E17 Art Trail is an open arts event that takes place each year throughout E17. This year’s theme is Storytelling. Laura Kerry co-founder of the E17 Art Trail talks to Penny Fielding. Portrait by Leone Morse. The first Art Trail was in 2005. What inspired you to start it? At the time Cris Thompson and I were artists living here in Walthamstow and were trying to find ways of showcasing our own work. We became involved with the Walthamstow Festival and having researched other art trails we thought there was a real need to provide a similar platform for the visual arts in E17. What inspired you to carry on? We live, breathe and love it! Every Trail there is a least one person who makes it all worth it. From the man walking home whose journey is filled with art to the excited child who marks in the guide all her favorite events. The creative joy is making art happen as opposed to making art. So this is the eleventh year of the Trail. How has it grown and changed over the years? It started with a very respectable 50 events and has grown about a third again every year! Our colleague Morag McGuire has developed opportunities for community groups and schools to take part. Events like the walks and the cycle rides have emerged as a way of people getting around the venues. The organizations dealing with mental health or addictions have found it a really useful opportunity to open their doors and show the artwork of their users, but also to demystify their service. I love the residents of a street who get together, have a street party and celebrate their collective creativity. As the Trail has got bigger groups have formed within it. This year there is a play street and The Poets Corner, which consists of five streets, who will display collaborative stories. I find it fascinating that someone will value something that doesn’t appeal to others. Who’s to judge? As we don’t have a selection process, the Trail has grown and grown. That’s its strength, but also why it’s hard to manage! 18

E17 Art Trail co-founder, Laura Kelly (left) and Linda Hughes, creator of this year’s Art Trail Guide cover and poster, in Linda’s studio. The studio will be open on Sunday 31 May (details on page 10) as part of this year’s Art Trail.

The £50 venue fee for businesses is fantastic value in terms of advertising. What would you say to encourage more businesses to get involved? We really need the support of businesses because the public purse is a lot tighter. The Trail attracts audiences from further afield more and more. We know from experience that the Trail greatly increases footfall. This year the Old Station Yard café behind Wood Street will be hosting story telling by The Stowtellers. Their involvement with the Trail will get customers to discover their café. There are many ways that businesses can benefit from the Trail. What are the hidden gems of the Trail that people often miss? Some of the far-flung houses have really special work, offering a personalized experience. You can talk to the artist and see how the work is made. I urge people not to be shy about knocking on the door of a stranger’s house. You can buy work for affordable prices directly from the artist and make a new friend or connection in the process.

our Trail is not just art on walls but also art everywhere. What’s your favourite “off the wall” element? I love the fact that it literally spills into the streets sometimes. The knitted installations in the front garden on Howard Road are wonderful. I really enjoy events when things are unexpected. Wendy McMillan completely covered her car in pennies and drove it around E17. The work was called Crash as a comment on the recession. The Trail is very community driven. How would you like to see it evolve in future years? We would like to take elements of the Trail out to other places and develop specific projects. Also work with artists and curators in a more involved way. There are residents’ groups that are so receptive to things happening in their communal areas with key people that can really make things happen. We have been putting together proposals for new projects, which will be ongoing and can become part of the Art Trail. The Trail took a break in 2013 which meant that other things were possible such as the literature and food festivals. We are

considering possibly going biennially. When we started there was a complete vacuum, but now there are so many groups that are linked in to the arts community with things happening all year round. What has the art Trail achieved? It gives me goose bumps realizing that behind the listings there are about 4000 people involved in delivering the festival. I think that’s phenomenal! What makes where we live so special is that people have this motivation and energy for making things happen for themselves. What people do on the Art Trail has an impact somewhere else and something else comes of it and it’s all done in the most amazing spirit of generosity.

This year’s Art Trail runs from 30th May until 14th June. www.e17arttrail.co.uk

Toy Story When a little boy lost his favourite toy a plea for help on Facebook led to a thread of (local) legend. Now the story is being turned into a children’s book in time for the E17 Art Trail by illustrator Chris Walker… Words by Karen Dunn Facebook pages in Walthamstow are the place you go if you want to swap a wardrobe for a bunch of bananas or have a lively debate about Mini Holland. However, it seems they can also be a force for good. When two-year-old Raffi lost his favourite toy – a little yellow man – a call for his safe return on Walthamstow Sell Or Swap turned into an online thread that has inspired a children’s book by the man who reunited them, local illustrator Chris Walker…

Can you tell us the story of the little yellow Man? I was working from home, looking at Facebook, and I saw a plea from a man called Joe asking if anyone had seen his son’s favourite toy - a little yellow man – that he had dropped earlier that day. When I went out later, to my surprise, he was lying in the road near my house. I took him home and took a picture of him having a cup of tea, so I could post it to let Raffi know he was safe. The picture got a few nice comments so I took a few more – him having a biscuit, meeting Batman and making friends with a Russian Doll. 20

Why did you decide to write the book?

What can we expect on the day?

When I got so many nice comments, I joked I should turn it into a book. Suddenly, loads of people were telling me to do it! I became a freelance illustrator last year and had been looking for an idea for a children’s book, so I asked Raffi’s dad if he minded. He said he was a writer, so we started working on the story together.

We’re going to open up our garden and do readings, plus my sister is going to do signing for the deaf. Me and Joe also agreed we’d give £1 from the sale of each book to Whipps Cross children’s ward.

Does the little yellow Man stay true to his Walthamstow roots? Definitely. The story starts at the Lighthouse on Markhouse Road and ends in the Village, with him meeting lots of different animals on his way.

Why did you launch the book at the art Trail? I’d been thinking about doing something for the Art Trail since I visited it last year and this seemed to fit perfectly. Although I didn’t realise that it’s earlier this year, which meant my deadline was much shorter than expected!

Do you still use Walthamstow Sell or Swap? Of course! I’ve got a new baby due in days, so it’s great for baby stuff. I like how funny it is too. I couldn’t believe it when I saw women were getting their husbands to pose naked to sell things! There was even talk of a naked calendar – if the Little Yellow Man can be turned into a book, then anything can happen!

Join illustrator, Chris Walker, for a very special book launch at the E17 art Trail. Pick up a copy of the book for £5 and take a look at Chris’ Illustrations at 33 Harris Street, E17 8EG on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June between 2pm and 6pm.

Be Inspired at The Mall Love Walthamstow and its art? Then come along to The Mall Walthamstow’s InterpARTation event from 4th May, to discover local artistic talent, celebrating Walthamstow’s past, present and future. Words Amy Wevill Artist portraits Simon Warren Simon’s portrait Barry Bliss

Giving kudos to Walthamstow’s thriving creative community and in order to encourage the next generation, the InterpARTation event has been put together by The Mall’s Marketing Manager Rebecca Marjoram. Over the week commencing 4th May the work of five local artists will be installed at The Mall as well as work by competition winning residents with a good photographic eye. Rebecca enthuses, “Here at The Mall Walthamstow we are passionate about promoting local creativity…we wanted to celebrate and showcase some of the unique talent here”. The InterpARTation event adopts the theme of Walthamstow’s past, present and future and the Mall in 25 years. This was the brief given to the five local artists who were each commissioned to produce a unique art installation. Voices from the

past already adorn the walls of The Mall in the form of quotes from famous figures with a connection to the area including William Morris and David Bailey. Each of the artists, the “Five stars of Waltham Forest” work in a different medium, ranging from fashion design to photography to textile installation. As well as all this, The Mall’s Hidden Gems Photographic Competition has meant the whole community can get involved (no experience necessary) and the results will be on display alongside the other art installations. A launch event on the 7th May will kick off the two week exhibition and celebrate those who have helped make it happen as well as future talent in the area. This event is free and all are welcome, but you will need to register (see details below). There will also be an online charity auction of pieces to help raise money for charity, a good excuse to start your own E17 art collection.

Walthamstow Mural from The Climbing Frame Founded by Walthamstow resident, Kate Westbrook, The Climbing Frame runs creative activities for kids in East London. In an empty shop in The Mall, Kate and illustrator Monique Jivram ran a series of children’s workshops where they taught collage, printing, painting and drawing. A Walthamstow mural has resulted and will be on display by the food hall for the duration of the InterpARTation event. Made by the future artists of Walthamstow, the piece references the area’s historic buildings and how it looks today.

Fashion design from Hollie Tarrier Walthamstow born and bred fashion designer, Hollie Tarrier (University of East London 2014 graduate) will present her latest dress design. The piece considers the strong influence William Morris continues to have upon the art community in the area. She has produced a highly structured, futuristic shirt dress made using William Morris-inspired tapestry with embroidery and a floral design. Through this juxtaposition of styles she shows how the past can be updated and driven forward rather than being fixed. As well as admiring the garment, visitors will also be able to browse her portfolio and see photographs of the dress being worn. This dress itself will be just one of the pieces on sale at the online auction. Check The Mall website for details of how to place your bid. 22

Vanessa Brightwell’s Giant Frog You may have noticed Vanessa Brightwell’s decorated elephant in the window of The Mill after last year’s Fun Palace event. Now look out for the giant frog greeting you at the rear entrance to The Mall. It is a reminder of the Walthamstow Wetlands project in development by the marshes. Work has started on making the area, which contains an abundance of wildlife including rare species of bird, more accessible. It will include an education centre, which will allow for a much better understanding of the nature there and why it is such a special place. Vanessa runs workshops for children alongside Scribble & Smudge’s Lesley Palmer, so knows all about inspiring the next generation.

Contemplative Textile Installation by Sba Shaikh A textile installation piece consisting of three layers has been produced by local textile artist, Sba Shaikh, who runs Mehraj art and design. There is one layer for the past, present and future. She has captured the present by running a workshop at The Mall where residents coloured in prints, which she then worked into the final piece. The devoré technique she uses on another layer produces contrasting opaque and transparent elements in the fabric. Sba sees this as expressing the unknowable nature of the future.

The Hidden Gems Photography Competition For his ‘I Love Walthamstow’ series, Simon Warren took an array of photographs capturing the details of the area. A dragon in the village or a ceramic beehive are just some of the surprises that can be spotted if you look closely enough. The Hidden Gems photography competition called for local residents to think again about the streets they travel every day or those that surround them yet are rarely ventured along. The top ten winning entries will be displayed, along with some of Simon’s own images, on a large screen at The Mall for the InterpARTation event.

Daily installation (different piece each day) over 5 day 4th – 8th May Launch event: Thursday May 7th 6-8pm

“We are delighted to have on-board our chosen commissioned artists and look forward to revealing their unique pieces to shoppers and the Walthamstow community. We would urge everyone to come along and see the finished pieces which will be on display here at The Mall Walthamstow in May”. Rebecca Marjoram

All artists will be on-site at the launch to introduce their installations. Tickets are limited but free, register here; https://eventbrite.co.uk/ event/16394522458/

So why not, explore parts of The Mall you may not have ventured into, be inspired, take your own photographs and think about how you see the future of Walthamstow.

Installations to be on show for two weeks 8th – 22nd May

Architectural historian, Karen Averby uncovers curiosities and stories from Walthamstow’s rich and varied past

ON THE ART TRAIL Today’s Walthamstow is home to an impressive array of artistic types, as shown by the incredible extent of E17 Art Trail happenings. This modern-day multi-faceted artistic tradition has echoes dating from at least the nineteenth century, with many artists having since passed through. Grayson Perry had his studio here for a while, and the renowned Walthamstow College of Art has produced many prodigious names including fashion designers Marion Foale and Sally Tuffin who launched one of Carnaby Street’s trendiest boutiques in 1961, while former teaching staff includes artist Peter Blake, designer of many famous album covers including The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper. Arguably the most eminent name associated with Walthamstow is designer, poet and socialist William Morris, born in Elm House, Clay Street (now Forest Road). His artistic legacy is represented in part at the William Morris Gallery, Forest Road, his childhood home; the Gallery itself was helped into being by another Walthamstow-raised artist, Walter Ernest Spradbery (1889-1969). Known as a watercolourist, linocut artist and poster designer, Spradbery was a former student and teacher at the Walthamstow School of Art, in existence between 1883 and 1915. Although born

in East Dulwich his family had moved to Hackney by the time he was two, before relocating to Walthamstow firstly at 74 Acacia Road, and later 36 Turner Road. A lifelong pacifist, Spradbery served in the First World War as an official war artist, but he is best known for his London Transport poster designs produced between 1912 and 1940. He married opera singer Dorothy Horsey, known professionally as Dorothy d’Orsay, and they settled in Epping Forest. Spradbery was a dynamic supporter of the arts in and around Walthamstow. He taught for many years at the Society of Friends Educational Settlement in Greenleaf Road, campaigned for local causes including that to save the Vestry House Museum, presented musical, dance and drama performances in his garden and was also Chairman, then President of the Essex Arts Club, a society of artists and art lovers which grew from the Art School’s sketch club. He also helped found the Walthamstow Antiquarian Society (now Walthamstow Historical Society) which had long-envisaged a gallery in Morris’ former home.

hard to cope

The Gallery opened in 1950, enabled by patronage and campaigns of social reformers Frank Brangwyn, an artist who donated most of his works and collections to galleries in depressed areas, and architect and designer Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo, a friend of Spradbery’s. When the Gallery was threatened with closure in 2007 Spradbery’s celebrated lighting designer son John was amongst those avidly campaigning for its rescue. The campaign was a success and the Gallery reopened in 2012. Spradbery’s passionate support of the arts in Walthamstow is paralleled by that of Laura Kerry and her Art Trail colleagues as well as all participants, ensuring a continued tradition of artistic development and inspiration. As William Morris said: “History has remembered the kings and warriors, because they destroyed; art has remembered the people, because they created.” www.archangelheritage.co.uk To find out more about Spradbery and to see examples of his work see November 2014’s E List www.theelist.co.uk

LOCAL HERO

Stephen Ferguson Ever since Stephen started sending the E List details of gigs at his What’s Cookin night Paul Lindt has been taken by the quality of the acts. Fans of Mark Lamarr’s much missed Radio 2 show ‘God’s Jukebox’ will not be surprised to discover that Lamarr is also a fan of this Leytonstone gem. Here Paul talks to Stephen about how he and his partner Alison manage to attract world class performers like the Jim Jones Revue, Wilko Johnson and Talvin Singh, and incredibly all at a price each punter decides.

2011 we took on the management of our own place, The Birkbeck Tavern in Leyton. That was great because we ran it as a music pub and put gigs on whenever we wanted, and saved a failing bar. We improved the real ale, made it welcoming, looked after the Leyton Orient crowd (and away supporters), put on a stack of music, and turned it into a great local boozer. Long may it stay open! So you’d recommend poeple having a go? Absolutely! Its a right laugh, but it also takes a lot of hard work. I like to think we’re quite professional, but we have a lot of fun with it as well, and try not to take it too seriously (even though we do!) We’ve been doing it successfully for over 10 years. That hasn’t been by chance. You have to have respect for the musicians and your audience, and it has to be inclusive. How did you discover music and who are your musical heroes? Johnny Cash and a lot of bad Irish country & western from my Mum & Dad. Then POW! Punk rock give me a musical identity in 1977. No looking back after that. Musical heroes? No! I did have one, and then I met him. After that, no more musical heroes… How would you describe the music you book at What’s Cookin? Basically anything that’s rock’n’roll and has a tune. We started

off as a kinda country night but it’s much more diversified now, though still quite ‘roots’ based stuff. We like old time country, bluegrass, Southern rock, 70s boogie jams, and 60s styled garage rock’n’roll. Stand out acts over the years? Way too many... Jim Jones Revue, Broken Family Band, Wilko Johnson, Urban Voodoo Machine, Jackie Leven, Pete Molinari, Wolf People, Black Diamond Heavies, Bobby Bare Jnr, Billy Childish, Talvin Singh...could go on and on! The club’s had some good reviews from the music press. Yeah, we’ve had some nice mentions in a lot of London press. We’ve also released a series of compilation albums on our record label Stove Pony Records, called ‘What’s Kickin’ of acts who have played at What’s Cookin’. When Mark Lamarr was doing his excellent ‘God’s Jukebox’ show on Radio 2 he would regularly pick them as Album of the Week. He said they could be the soundtrack to his show. If you ever heard the show that is saying something. After the late John Peel it was the best show on the radio. Mark Kermode also came along to film a segment for BBC2’s Review Show. A lot of Marks’ seem to like us... Who would be your dream booking for What’s Cookin? Sorry, no dream booking.

Ok let’s get it out of the way, you live in East Ham. Are you a Londoner born and bred? Nope, not a Londoner born and bred. But maybe anyone who has lived in London for a period of time, from wherever in the world, can call themselves a Londoner? I’m Irish, and originally from Belfast and came to London, for one reason and another, in 1980. I spent my first night in a dodgy hotel in King’s Cross. From there it was Hornsey, Finsbury Park, Tufnell Park, Peckham, Forest Hill and then eventually East Ham where I’ve been for 17 years. Alison, my partner in the club and all things, is from Dewsbury in Yorkshire, and has lived in east London since the late 80s. You run regular free live music nights at the Servicemen’s Club in Leytonstone. What’s the place like? The Ex-services Club is a really great place. The audience and the bands all seem to really like it. It has an olde workingmen’s club kinda vibe. A bit like being stuck in a time-warp, especially the bar prices! We have our venue upstairs in their function room. It’s a nice sized room and the bands all think the sound is pretty decent. It may be obvious but having a space with good acoustics is dead important. They do a couple of real ales, we get treated well by the guv’nor, and we like being there. You’ve organised live music before at various celebrated Waltham Forest pubs including sadly departed The Plough. Without getting too depressing how has the experience been? Yeah, Alison and me started the nights in the Plough in 2004, then moved to the Sheep Walk in Leytonstone for a long time, then the North Star, also in Leytonstone. We also had an earlier short spell at the Ex-services Club. In

The folk who play are dreamy enough. Though, would love to get a guy called Paul Burch back again. He’s from Nashville and plays with Lampchop and has his own band, the WPA BallClub. He played for us a few years back. Stunning! Love his stuff and it was a dream to have him at What’s Cookin’. Check him out www.paulburch.com The gigs are free, which is amazing considering some of the names you attract. Without giving any trade secrets how on earth do you achieve this? No secret. Great bands, great music, a warm welcome, and a crowd who know a good band when they see them. We also like a plastic flower or two! People come in for free, put money in the big glass, that all goes to the bands, the venue take the bar, everyone’s happy! We have a lot of unknown acts play, and when it’s free folk will take a punt. Then they really enjoy the band and are really generous when the glass comes round. We do the very odd ticket/pay on door show now and again, and could do a lot more with the quality of acts we get, but it just feels right to do them free with the collection. I think it creates a relationship between the bands and the audience.

How do you feel about the general provision of live music in this part of East London? Funnily enough when we first started over 10 years ago we wanted to do it in East Ham or somewhere in Newham. Could we find a venue up for it...could we ’eck as like. In the last few years since we started there seems to be a bit more live music cropping up in the area, things like Forest Gap down the road in Forest Gate. And of course you have the great Eastside Jazz Club, who have been around for ages. Any hopes and aspirations for the area? More real ale pubs, some nice grub places, a record shop…and for Tescos and McDonalds to mysteriously disappear. And finally what plans do you have for the future for What’s Cookin? We also do a monthly show at the lovely Union Chapel in Islington. They’re ticketed/pay on the door shows. And of course we have our 8th annual Leytonstone Festival What’s Cookin’ Sunday Picnic on Sunday 19th July. This is at Henry Reynolds Gardens on Bush Road E11. Eight hours of live music, nice food, local arts & crafts, and of course, real ale. I’m normally quite modest, but I reckon it’s one of the best days out in London all year! Walthamstow Diary Between forest and marsh lies the glorious Stow. These are the tales and meanderings of a proud resident of E17 I joined the Walthamstow dog owning community in 2014 when Morris the dog moved in. One of his early public outings was at the Lloyd Park dog show. We entered him in the cutest little dog category, but told him, and ourselves, that winning didn’t matter. Of course that all changed as soon as we got to the park, we started checking out any other small dogs we could see, trying to decide where our dog ranked on the cute factor. When it was his turn in the show ring all composure was lost, me and my friends cheered as my other half proudly walked the dog around. The first indication that things may not be going as we planned came as the judges walked over to look at our dog. Instead of sitting there with his head tilted in an enquiring yet cute way, he took the opportunity to go the toilet. The dog was mightily pleased with himself, but I’m not sure the judges felt the same. We got third prize though, which we thought was pretty good for his first jaunt in to the modelling world. This year, the dog show is back on 4th May. There are the usual categories such as Best Paw Shake and Best Trick, and there is another that is not to be missed, Best Dressed Dog (Star Wars Theme). Picture the scene, four legged Princess Leah, Storm Troopers and Ewoks may all be gracing the park. I can’t tell you how much fun I’ve had looking at Star Wars dog costumes online, there are some absolute crackers. Sadly, hopes of even entering our dog into this category are already dashed. He simply doesn’t tolerate any kind of costume, you can get him in them, but then he just refuses to move and looks very angry. We managed to get him in a crocodile suit once, he looked like he was going to commit murder. So for this year I think we’ll just have to look on with awe and amazement as the Star Wars dogs take to the floor. www.walthamstowdiary.com
