Inspired by a trip to India Walthamstow artist Kally Laurence sees her world with fresh eyes. In my most recent work I have gone back to my roots as a printmaker and have engaged in making large scale monotypes, using a combination of screen print, block print and painting. I want the work to be beautiful but at the same time hold an energy and spontaneity. I love the making - the processes and the physical actions and experiments of layering and deleting elements, over painting and playing with colour and density. I declare a work to be finished when it says back to me all that I felt at that point of time and the place it is depicting. During a trip to India I became interested in the detail of everyday life. I realised that it is noticing, enjoying and celebrating the mundane and its infinite detail that is far more important to me than the grand events. This was highlighted in an environment that was so visual and so far

from my norm, that I vowed to take more notice of my daily surroundings on my return home. Having graduated from the Royal College of Art in what seems like a hundred years ago, I have spent the last few years bringing up my children, teaching and co-running Queenie and Ted, an up-cycled fashion business. Having worked in the world of fashion and textiles I find myself drawn to pattern and repetition, both common features in the world I inhabit in my daily life - a bus seat pattern on a train to Southend that is just slightly different to the pattern of the flooring; mismatched fabric seat covers in a bar in Greece; a fridge decorated with patterned sticky-back-plastic dumped at Hollow Ponds. I am constantly taking photos, always keeping an open mind for the accidental â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;artâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and beauty that surround us and that we can so easily miss while rushing through life as we do. The imminence of my children leaving home makes the beauty of the mundane even more relevant. Ultimately to live more in the present, to slow down the pace.

So upon arriving home from India I started to take notice of the nuances and hidden beauty in my corner of East London. I use my work as a way of seeing and living in my world, a way of making it special, noticing both the external visual elements as well as the internal emotions and responses it evokes, and quite honestly I use it as an excuse for wandering the streets or staring out the window of a train, being open to the world around me. This is particularly important in a world where it is so easy to disappear, head down, into technology and miss so much. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the accidental sights and emotions that interest me - why do we notice what we do ? In the right frame of mind we can be aware of the most pleasing and inspiring things in the most unexpected of places - the pale yellow tiles, with a few gaps at Barbican station, the interior of a frequently visited local cafe on Walthamstow Market where the cafe owner has juxtapositioned Turkish artefacts with fluorescent signs and tourist posters on a jade background, driving home from work I was interested in seeing the

familiar streets differently through a veil of blossom. The normal becomes special when observed from a different perspective.

The E17 Art Trail is an amazing time in Walthamstow, it epitomises the area in a very tangible way, all the creativity and sense of community that permanently simmers below the surface is brought to the forefront with an amazing impact. For me the Art Trail has always provided a deadline and a reason to make a piece of work, when making work hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t always been at the forefront of my life. For a few years we actually made pieces that involved our children - for example, giant greyhounds on the front of our house the year the dog track closed. Ultimately the Art Trail makes art accessible to both makers and viewers, and is obviously a great way to nose round peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s houses and gardens. This year I am planning to open my house and studio and exhibit locally-inspired works. After all, we do live in the best place.

. As I write this in late March, Spring is definitely starting to spring. Green shoots are everywhere. First thing on Saturday I had a meeting in Walthamstow’s Lloyd Park. I was early. I waited surrounded by daffodils, skipping infants and the sound of tennis balls bouncing back and fourth, serenaded by bird song and the surreal tweets of parakeets. It was the kind of day weekends are made for. Joggers and cyclists were everywhere and I thought back to the previous night’s pub conversation when my friend Mark had sung the praises of the Park Run scheme. He was trying to balance his alcohol intake with his early morning commitment to the Park Run on Wanstead Flats (see the Park Run listing on page 33). Walthamstow has one too at the Peter May Sports Ground on Wadham Road. There are Park Runs every Saturday all across the country and they are run by volunteers, free, and open to everyone of every ability. They provide a system that records your personal time over 5K. You can do what you like with your times, boast about it, keep it to yourself or use it to set your own goals. Mark, a novice, enjoys the sociability. Sticking with running, but upping the ante somewhat, Walthamstow resident Graham Law is soon to embark on a run with the slightly ominous nickname of the ‘Toughest Footrace On Earth’. Set in the Sahara the six day event is the equivalent of six marathons and in 50C heat! Graham is running to raise funds for the Brain Tumour Charity so please show your support by sponsoring him (details on page 32). Finally back in February I ran a feature on the photographs of Tim Reder, of Leyton Orient and West Ham Football Clubs in the late 80s. Sadly the ‘O’s have been making the headlines these last few weeks as the club’s future is threatened by serious debts. As the second oldest League team in London and our foremost local team its demise would be a devastating loss to the area and its fans. The Leyton Orient Football Trust also run lots of great activities to improve the fitness and lives of locals of all ages (see their Family Cycle Training in the listings on page 33). This month sees various fundraising events to try and save the club including a Red Imp Comedy Club night at Walthamstow’s Rose & Crown with the brilliant Romesh Ranganathan on 10 April (details on page 42) Paul Lindt, Editor editor@theelist.co.uk

The Beatles in five minute bites To celebrate the Beatles’ first (of two) appearances at Walthamstow’s Granada Cinema in May 1963, Walthamstow Rock‘n’Roll Book Club have a special event next month with leading Beatles expert Mark Lewisohn and they need your help.

Mark Lewisohn is the acknowledged world authority on the Beatles. He was consultant and researcher on the Beatles’ own Anthology and has been involved in a number of other projects for them, as well as many independent works. His books include the bestselling and influential Recording Sessions (1988), The Complete Beatles Chronicle (1992), The Beatles’ London (1994 and 2008) and, most recently, Tune In (2013) – the first volume in his comprehensive history of the Beatles and their times, a trilogy of books under the umbrella title The Beatles: All These Years. From a domestic germ of an idea, to a distinctive fixture on Hoe Street, the business has gone from handcrafting beard oil in a spare room to the heart of the Walthamstow. I was warmly welcomed to the shop, mellifluous jazz soothing my tired Friday night ears. The first thing that struck me was just how much effort had gone into designing the premises; uncluttered elegance and a genuine recreation of a bygone era, but with very modern styling. The COVE17 experience is neither

rushed nor cursory, Kane, my barber of the evening, took his time and the results were impressive. I relaxed into the full beard service, an impressive and precision hand-trimming from deft fingers. With the application of aromatic beard oil, my weekend had started in quite some style; I would return such was the luxurious and attentive nature of the service.

Songwriter and independent solo artist MIRI speaks to Kirsty McNeil-O’Connor about her varied career, her music and all matters of the heart. Photo by Paula Smith. MIRI writes about love and life experience and is politically minded too, “I have been since I was young, I don’t like injustice and being able to write a song in response to that is empowering,” says East London based MIRI. “In my own songwriting I want anything I write politically to be expressed in the best possible way, because that’s an art form in itself, knowing how to write that stuff

without being patronising or self-righteous can be tricky. I’ve always written some political songs and honed my writing when expressing political topics.” “My song ‘The Plight’ (on recent EP, Sound Vibrations) “has an undertone of a political idea, of not allowing external forces to crush your personal light, whatever that may be; gender, sexuality or even just being an honest individual, truthful to oneself. We live in a

society that often criminalises people; many feel like they’re being treated as guilty or under suspicion. So I write about everything, the human condition, but political events and attitudes definitely inspire my songwriting.” MIRI describes her music as soulful indie pop. Many artists inspire her from Bob Marley to Patti Smith. MIRI’s voice is clearly a local one; her singing voice has that rare quality of matching her spoken one. She

By 22, MIRI was signed to a management company and put through her paces. “I was burnt out for a while after that, it was character building though, I became more resilient. But I hadn’t dealt with my sexuality then, so I was in pain. I had felt gay from about 4 years old but I didn’t really know what it was. It was a different time then, there was no one in the public eye or personally that I could relate to really. There’s a great quote: ‘What you resist, persists’, that was true for me. I was throwing myself into my music.” MIRI started to explore the gay scene and became happier and more hopeful. “That was a very important point in my

MIRI – Sound Vibrations

MIRI had a childhood passion for entertainment. “I was 8 when I wrote my first song, about the Garbage Pale Kids. I collected their chewing gum stickers and thought; I’m gonna start a band!” Writing poetry from age 11 fed into her songwriting, “I enjoyed songwriting, but I didn’t think I was good enough.” It was her singing teacher, Howard who spotted something in MIRI. “He sent a tape of my songs on to an A&R guy who was interested. I was into filmmaking at the time; I was a runner while learning the ropes in film around Soho. I was working on a student film, trying to secure rights to use various artists for the soundtrack, but that was too expensive. I thought, well I write songs - so I did it myself. After getting some development studio time, John the A&R (from Peer Music) went to LA so that relationship fizzled out.”

music - if you don’t know who you are as a person then you can’t really know who you are as an artist.” She skillfully weaves true feeling through her songs; Blue Skies beautifully and mournfully describes unrequited, lost love or an idea, or dream that is out of reach. Compass (another from EP Sound Vibrations) is joyfully hopeful, suggesting the endless possibilities of life. “It was a bit of a gamble to do one EP with different producers but it worked, with the whole Sound Vibrations concept, it really flowed.” MIRI crowd funded to make her EP and learned a great deal from the whole process. “My track Electric Vibes received airplay on BBC6 Music, Tom Robinson’s Fresh On The Net Mix-tape Show and he included Compass as one of his top 5 favourites.” MIRI, like most selfemployed artists, diversifies. “I do keep busy, I run a monthly live music night with musician RoseRed called Blue Monday, a night created for an audience of LBQT women whilst endeavouring to bring people from all communities together.“ This is now in its

7th year, at The Boogaloo in Highgate. They’ve since been approached by award winning venue Green Note in Camden where they have held two sell-out nights, bringing female musicians to the forefront. Her own gigs are predominantly solo, “I just play keyboards but sometimes I’ll have a guitarist or drummer.” She’s played all over, including Amsterdam and Spain, and locally at Huck’s Cafe and The Bell in Walthamstow.

Rebecca Salter RA Finnola D’Albert talks to the renowned printmaker about her work and involvement with the ongoing Sheer Pleasure exhibition celebrating the work of Frank Brangwyn and Yoshijiro Urushibara at the William Morris Gallery. Rebecca Salter’s relationship with the Sato Woodblock Workshop in Japan mirrors that of Frank Brangwyn and Yoshijiro Urushibara in many ways. This mutually beneficial artistic dialogue has influenced the way in which she works. In woodblock printing, an image is drawn or painted onto thin washi (paper), then glued onto a plank of close-grained wood. An incision is made along both sides of each line in the image and the wood is chiseled away, based on the drawing. The block is then inked and a baren (a flat tool) presses paper against the inked woodblock to transfer the ink. The artist and the woodblock carver and printer work together, but separately, to create the final artwork.

Spending six years in Japan, Rebecca was introduced to many people working in traditional Japanese crafts, including those at the workshop that still interprets her drawings and paintings today. There are people in Japan still using these techniques, but despite Japan’s propensity to (wisely) preserve its traditions, their ‘market’ has almost completely disappeared. More often than not, their phenomenal levels of skill are often reduced to making reproductions and souvenirs, something that Rebecca described as ‘heartbreaking’. When Rebecca was elected to the Royal Academy two years ago, she decided to produce a series of prints with the Sato Woodblock Workshop every year. It

gives them contemporary work for their portfolio, rather than endlessly recreating classics. They have an appetite for this contemporary work and enjoy the technical challenge of interpreting Rebecca’s ideas on an often tiny budget. Rebecca also attempts to highlight a different technical skill each year. Whether it’s a carving skill or a painting skill, the bigger idea is that over the years their partnership will have showcased all of the various skills they use; something that might not be immediately obvious until you take a step back. Rebecca has a deep understanding of the techniques the workshop uses and has written two books on Japanese woodblock printing since her time studying at Kyoto City University of Arts. It’s this deeper

knowledge that allows her to push the pieces of work and the workshop printing them into different areas. They have an understanding of each other, an ongoing relationship that puts them on the same wavelength. Therein lies the intrinsic similarity to the collaboration between Brangwyn and Urushibara. Because Brangwyn understood the actual making of the work to a greater extent it wasn’t just a medium, but acted as a guiding influence on the work itself. That similarity is why Rebecca is currently being exhibited alongside Brangwyn in the William Morris Gallery. And, as with Urushibara, one of her own prints (in addition to those by the Sato Woodblock Workshop) is also exhibited.

We’ve all seen the most famous prints, Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ for example, but we almost never know the names of the incredibly talented craftsmen that produced them. As an Academician (someone elected to the Royal Academy) artists are expected to exhibit work in every Summer Exhibition, and so Rebecca hopes that she can use this ongoing opportunity as a platform to highlight the incredible work of Sato’s Woodblock Workshop, thereby increasing their involvement with contemporary work rather than just prints from the past.

Mini Gems Whenever we think of toy cars, we think of Dinky Toys or Matchbox. But in the 1950s and 60s, Walthamstow had its very own diecast metal toy manufacturer. The E List talks to Richie Humphrey, an avid collector and expert on Walthamstow’s answer to Dinky.

In the 1940s and early 50s under the Benson name, they produced moulded hollow cast toy figures, including soldiers, cowboys & Indians, and farm animals.

In 1951, after the name change the diecast toys were made at two other factories in Walthamstow, Sutherland Road and Oatland Rise, but Gosport Road was the head office where outworkers would bring assembled and painted toys.

How didyou started collecting? StocktonOn-Tees is the reason my Benbros addiction/collection started.

Not long after, the toys were renamed ‘Mighty Midgets’ and the cardboard boxes were redesigned (see the top right photo on this page). In 1954 they produced the first diecast metal models under the name “T.V. Series”, packed in a box resembling a 1950s television set with an artist’s impression of the contained toy on the screen.

I have lived in the town since I was five. Stockton is famous for two things: Firstly, in about 1827, John Walker a local chemist, invented the friction match as we know it today. Secondly, and more relevant to my story, on 27 September 1825, the Stockton & Darlington Railway line was opened. It was first used when George Stephenson drove the Locomotion along the ninemile stretch from Darlington to Stockton, reaching speeds of up to 15 mph.

In 1965, with competition from larger toy manufacturers and the introduction of cheaper plastic toys from the Far East, Benbros ceased production and they were taken over by Unerman Greenman Berger Ltd.

And the Benbros connection? Well, one of their early toys was that of Stephenson’s Rocket, which was the first locomotive to carry passengers at the rip-roaring speed of up to 30 mph.

So Richie, tell us a bit about this company. What was their name and when did they exist? They were called Benbros (London) Ltd, a British toy company that existed between 1951 and 1965. It was originally founded in the 1940s by two brothers, Jack and Nathan Benenson of Golders Green, North London. They originally called themselves ‘Benson Bros’, a contraction of Beneson Brothers however in 1951, they became ‘Benbros (London) Ltd’, and started using the trademark ‘Qualitoy’. They were based at 145 Gosport Road, Walthamstow. It is also believed that the brothers also had a condom factory in North London at the same time!

When I retired after a long police career, I started working for Vectis Toy Auctions at Thornaby in the North East. During my first auction I came across the Stephenson’s Rocket toy in an auction lot (far left, top). In the same lot was couple of Benbros Mighty Midgets, an Army Scout Car and a Vespa Scooter with rider (above). I was fascinated by the crudeness of their castings and how toys have changed over the 50 years. I started to search for other Benbros toys, both in our auctions, at other auction houses and online. Although they were very few and far between I found a number of TV Series and Mighty Midget versions. My research found there were 51 of these miniature toys made in the late 50s to the early 60s by the Benenson Brothers of Walthamstow. I bought more and more trying to get everyone.

Jack and Nathan Benenson employed salesmen to travel the country and show samples of their toys to toy shop owners. They had salesman’s sets, which contained various examples of the miniature toys, a must for any collector of these little vehicles. I am pleased to say I got the opportunity to buy two (see opposite). I believe these vehicles were influenced by Dinky Toys, which had become well established and I came across others under the guise of Qualitoy and Zebra. I bought other toys made by Benbros, such as the WWll soldiers, Cowboys and Indians, farm animals and figures.

Held at Hucks Ian and Hucks’ other manager Mark knew when it first opened in 2015 that they wanted it to be a regular home for live music events. And when the first Held At Hucks: Acoustic took place and musician Marc Oliver performed, a partnership formed. Marc put himself forward to keep the events going, and has now taken charge of curating the lineup, booking the acts and organising the events. This was partially for selfish reasons. Marc hadn’t lived in Walthamstow for long, but from experience, he knew that the best way to meet new people and get to know local fellow artists was to put on a gig. After a friend who lives near Hucks recommended he drop in, he spoke to Mark and Ian, setting up a trial gig initially to see what it was like as an event space. It went well so that they put more dates in the diary, booked more acts and have continued to go from strength to strength. They’ve just had their eleventh event, and the crowd that turned out was great. The trio want Held At Hucks: Acoustic to be open to everybody and to keep it accessible, each event takes place in the afternoon. There are a lot of families with children in the area, so ‘normal’ show-time wasn’t an option and the guys are very keen to get kids into

gigs and have them experiencing live music. Doing it on Sunday afternoon seemed to make the most sense to Marc, Mark and Ian, and has proven to be the most successful way to get the performers in front of the widest audience. The shows are also free entry, with an optional whip round for the artists after they’ve played. In terms of the kind of acts you’ll see, Marc is keen for variation and refers to the performers as ‘singer-songwriters of London’, but that basically means anything goes as long as it’s performed acoustically. For both vibe and volume reasons, they don’t offer any amplification, but if an artist can recreate their music acoustically, then they can almost certainly come and play. Each event tends to have at least one performer from Walthamstow (or as locally as possible) and then others from further afield. Their first international artist booking, Martin Dee from Holland, came earlier this year and more enquiries have started rolling in. Marc couldn’t be more proud. The Hucks crowd is full of local and loyal customers. Ian goes as far as to say they’re blessed to have such an amazing customer base. As the cafe is a little bit off the beaten

track, their passing trade isn’t huge, so their reputation is as important as their regulars. And it’s a reputation that’s flourishing. Free gigs are rare, but free gigs that are family friendly, held in the afternoon, and endeavour to promote the artists involved are almost unheard of. Mark and Ian have created a lovely space, and Marc has crafted an incredible vibe. The events are monthly, and usually on one of the last Sundays of the month. Although the dates aren’t ever set in stone, both their Facebook and Twitter accounts are updated regularly with upcoming artists and dates. The team are also very keen for musicians and performers to get in touch.

If you are planning full height tiles, say in a bathroom or shower area, a good tip is to not take them all the way to the ceiling. Ceilings are rarely straight and you can avoid awkward cuts at the top by finishing with a whole tile a good few inches from the ceiling to get a perfectly straight line. Talking of cuts (that is when you have to cut the tile to fill the space) plan these ahead. When tiling a floor for example, the grid of the tile should be symmetrical to the space and this can be difficult if the room is an odd shape. A good tiler will understand this problem but it’s worth flagging up if you think it’s going to be an issue. There are now many different coloured grouts on the market so you have a choice. If you have a black tile with a white grout it’s a very different look than a black tile with a grey grout so give this consideration, it will really affect the finished look. A little bit of something gorgeous goes a long way so mix in a vintage or Victorian tiled panel with modern, plain tiles. Most modern tiles come in imperial sizes so you can mix match and be happy! Residential developments and the role of private developers With the continuing growth of cities, the need to meet housing targets puts pressure upon the government and local authorities to facilitate the construction of more housing. Whilst a good portion of new housing is built by Housing Associations in conjunction with local authorities, much of the remainder is built by private developers. With a shortage of available “greenfield” sites (new land not previously used for building) within cities and urban areas, more development is taking place on “brownfield sites” (sites previously built on or used for commercial purposes). By nature, Brownfield sites in urban areas can be challenging. They tend to be smaller and so the proximity of adjacent buildings and the relationship of any proposal to them is a consideration. There may be issues of land contamination, archaeology, trees, structures etc. to be dealt with. When looking at new developments there are many areas for consideration before the architecture of the buildings. At an early stage, it is important to understand the planning constraints, allowable density of development, amenity space requirements etc. to assess the number of units possible and hence the viability of the site.

Who can help? Architects with experience in residential developments are an asset to a developer. Their knowledge of relevant planning legislation enables them to assess the capacity of the site and hence the viability, at a very early stage. Experience in the design of residential developments will result in proposals which are in tune with the aspirations of the Local Plan whilst maximising the development potential of a site.

Carefree Kids In this era of box ticking Carefree Kids offers much needed emotional support to local children in schools and their parents too. Paul Lindt talks to volunteer Jill Lovell about the charity, the power of play and why she feels Carefree Kids’ approach makes such a difference. Photograph by Paul Tucker. Are you local? I was born at Thorpe Coombe Maternity Hospital, as it was then, and started school at Thorpe Hall School. I remember the original Charlie Brown’s Transport café before the roundabout was named after it! I remember Matalan in Leytonstone as Bearman’s department store and visiting Father Christmas there after having a sleigh ride. The local cinema was next door! Before I give my age away completely… You’re a volunteer at Carefree Kids. Tell me about the charity. Carefree Kids is a fantastic charity that really offers something different to local children and families. They work mainly in Waltham Forest but are branching into neighbouring boroughs. As volunteers, we visit local schools to support children in one-to-one play sessions that are totally non-directive. This play space enable children to develop their self-esteem and emotional resilience.

How did you get involved? As an ex Waltham Forest teacher Carefree Kids had been part of my school for as long as I could remember although I hadn’t had any direct contact. Wondering what lay next for me after I left my school I went for an interview for a job in Newham. As I waited I spied a Carefree Kids leaflet. On a whim I popped it into my bag. I kept it safe for 9 months! Fortunately I didn’t get the job and now Carefree Kids combine my two passions of children and play so what better charity to get involved in. I haven’t looked back since I went to my introductory morning in September 2015. I was so sure I wanted to be part of Carefree Kids but didn’t want to look too eager so waited for two long days before I rang and asked to be considered to go further!

Tell us how the charity started and who does it aim to help? Ros Kane is a local psychotherapist who founded Carefree Kids back in 2004 when she noticed a lack of long term emotional support for local children. The charity helps children in primary and secondary schools across Waltham Forest and neighbouring boroughs, also offering individual support to parents and families. Most children are referred by their school. A more play-based support is offered to primary aged children whilst with secondary aged children an art therapy or talking based approach might be used. What are some of the ways Carefree Kids can help them? Carefree Kids can offer oneto-one non-directive play sessions to individual children, counselling support for parents and tailored support for groups of children, for example drama, movement and art therapy. Tell us about the ‘Before Becoming a Parent’ course. ‘Before Becoming a Parent’ is a school-based course for teenage boys and girls with the aim of preparing them for the challenges of parenthood through role play and visits from local mothers. The charity also provides help targeted at parents. We offer individual support sessions with trainee counsellors and therapists, to

support parents with any difficulties they may be experiencing. They can also advise parents on how to play more therapeutically with their own children at home. What do you particularly enjoy about working with the kids through the charity? Honestly what don’t I enjoy!? I love being part of a school where I feel most at home. I love a new role in school that isn’t teaching but still having contact with children. I love having the privilege of sharing a child’s life and a chance to help them through some difficulties. As an early years teacher for most of my life I know the value of play for children in their development. One of the books we are asked to read is by Play Therapist Garry Landreth. He says “Toys are used like words; play is the language.” I have enjoyed meeting all the different people that are involved in Carefree Kids. I have surprised myself by my eagerness to read around the subject and how I look forward to the study days and watching the training DVDs. Within the weekly Supervision groups that volunteers attend to talk about their children I have gained so much knowledge from everyone else and really benefitted from the input I receive there. I had to look at my own feelings and reactions and learnt rather a lot about myself too! 31

I am so grateful that Carefree Kids is my local charity and that I have had the opportunity to be part of it. When it comes to fundraising the charity has created some great events. Yes! Last summer, Carefree Kids organised a fantastic event featuring local musicians and performance poetry. The event took place upstairs at Ye Olde Rose & Crown, a wonderful Walthamstow venue who are really supportive of local causes. This month they are kindly letting us use the upstairs room again for a quiz night I have organised to raise money for Carefree Kids. This month you have a special campaign called ‘Local Hero’. Great title! Local hero is a fun campaign running for the whole month of April, set up by the fantastic online fundraising platform Local Giving. The quiz night I am running is all part of my Local Hero crusade – a chance to thank people for their generous donations and meet other Carefree

Kids supporters. Anyone can join in with Local Hero – just visit localgiving.org/what-we-do/ campaigns/localhero and set up a fundraising page for your own favourite charity. Last year, the activities ranged from taking a bath in baked beans to cycling around South Wales! Apart from the fundraising how is CareFree funded? It’s funded by a number of grant makers such as The Big Lottery, the Mercers Company and the Henry Smith charity. They are also lucky to benefit from the generosity of individual supporters giving monthly and oneoff donations. We receive generous ongoing support from Stow Brothers, Ye Olde Rose & Crown, The Forest School and local branches of TSB, Sainsbury’s and Tesco. If people want to get involved, how should they go about it? Carefree Kids are always keen to talk to new supporters and volunteers who wish to work with children, fundraise, or join the committee. In fact, they are currently looking for a new Chair of Trustees to join the board. For volunteers interested in working with children, Carefree Kids run introductory sessions each half term, to give prospective volunteers a flavour of the work they do. These sessions are informative and interactive – for me it was the first step in my Carefree Kids journey. Interested volunteers should contact Carefree Kids by phone, by email, or via the website.

What do you have planned for the future? Carefree Kids wants to go from strength to strength reaching ever more children in need of some support. The charity is currently fundraising for some exciting new initiatives – watch this space! What are the challenges? To keep our service thriving and supporting local kids we constantly need to fundraise – especially in the current economic climate. And some of the work with the children can be emotional at times due to the difficulties they may be facing, but luckily we have great support with our regular training and supervision meetings run by fully trained therapists. Personally what would you love to see one day for our kids in Waltham Forest? I would like to see more provision for every child’s health and wellbeing and a more holistic approach to children’s development in schools – particularly with all the current emphasis on academic targets and testing.

April sees Walthamstow resident Graham Law heading out to the Sahara desert to take part in the Marathon des Stables in support of the Brain Tumour Charity. Dubbed the Toughest Footrace On Earth, the race is a six-day ultra marathon covering over 150 miles, the equivalent of approximately six regular marathons. If that weren’t enough, to make things even tougher Graham will have to carry all his own food, clothes and bedding for the week on his back. Fortunately water will be supplied! Leytonstone High Road Leytonstone High Road has been a dominant thoroughfare for centuries, as part of the main highway from Epping to London, from the Green Man inn to Stratford. Until the mid-19th century Leytonstone was just a hamlet on the High Road, with houses straggling south from the Green Man. Not only was the High Road used to transport goods to London markets, it was also on the main turnpike to Norwich via Woodford. As a result the road had some of the oldest inns along its route, providing beds and stabling from at least the 17th century, amongst them the Green Man, The Harrow, and Robin Hood, which became the Red Lion.

Several large grand residences were built along the road in the 18th century, including Leytonstone House near the Green Man, which is now within Hanbury Drive and was converted for use as a hospital. Most have been demolished, however, including Park House near Granleigh Road in 1968 after being used as a library, and Sycamore House, demolished in 1958 to make way for the Welsh Church. The character of the wider area was hugely changed following the coming of the railway in the mid-19th century, and Leytonstone was transformed from a rural settlement to an urban area, with residential streets

such as cinemas, tea rooms and public houses were also a draw. The fortunes of Leytonstone High Road as a shopping centre perhaps reached its zenith in the 1950s and 1960s, when the street was jammed with shoppers, especially on Saturdays. In time, however, it was unable to compete with the big shopping centres of the later 20th century and a decline in shoppers led to the closure of many long-established shops and businesses.

Shops to supply the newly expanding population were built along its length and together with the installation of tram routes in the 1870s, its appearance was forever transformed. Service businesses including tailors, garages and a cycle repair shop were established, and every shopping need was seemingly catered for, with shops for quality clothing and furniture as well as an array of independent shops, amongst them fishmongers, butchers, greengrocers and bakers. Bucks Bakery at No. 568 became famous for its spectacular building and fairy tale themed Christmas cakes. High street names such as Woolworths and British Home Stores had premises here, and the renowned independent department store of Bearmans was hugely popular, its enchanting Christmas displays in particular being fondly remembered. The High Road was not only used by locals; good transport links to Stratford and Epping bolstered the numbers who shopped here, and amenities

Walthamstow Diary Between forest and marsh lies the glorious Stow. These are the tales and meanderings of a proud resident of E17 Church bells, the quintessential sound of the British countryside, a sound that not many outside of London would associate with our city. A sound that probably isn’t widely thought of to be part of the East London soundscape, but of course, it is. Church bells are just as much a part of Walthamstow as the sound of creaking buses, screeching parakeets, and inhabitants complaining about house prices. The air here is often thick with the sound of clapper striking ancient metal, and there are two main culprits that create this magnificent sound, St Saviours and St Marys. St Saviours, the grey stone giant of Markhouse Road, is the nearest church to me. I can hear its bells when they are rung on Sunday mornings. If I have had a few too many sweet sherries the night before and I’m still in bed, the sound of the bells drifts in through the bedroom window and fills the room. The volume rising and falling as the breeze catches the sound and moves it around the streets of E17. Some of my best Sunday mornings have started with a cuppa in the back garden listening to sound of the bells ringing out from the mighty spire down the road. I don’t often hear the bells of St Marys ring as it’s further away from home, but I was lucky enough to hear the newly restored bells peal a few weeks ago. A peal is when bells are rung continuously in at least 5000 different sequences or ‘changes’, and a performance typically lasts over three hours. It was pretty magical to stand by those ancient walls for a while and listen to the bells ringing out across the village. Surrounded by the ivy clad churchyard, with nothing but the sound of the ten bells for company, it was easy to forget that central London is just a few miles down the road. Church bells, a sound from the countryside that has been enveloped by the city. A sound that sings of roast dinners and afternoon pints in the pub.
