elcome to the biggest ever E List. Last year I took the decision to do a joint July/August issue because experience told me that come August, and just like Venice, virtually everyone ups sticks and escapes the hot stinky city. Most of our usual organisers seem to shut up shop for the month. This year I am having second thoughts, maybe people don’t in fact leave in search of fresh country air or sea breezes. I am beginning to suspect they’ll still be here, locked in their homes, blinds down, just pretending to have gone away. Let’s face it, after the Walthamstow Garden Party, the Hitchcock open air film festival, the Leytonstone Arts Trail and the Leytonstone and Highams Park Festivals etc etc etc all in July we’ll all be bloody exhausted. I took part in the E17 Art Trail in June, albeit in a minor way and I felt like I’d been hit by some sort of East London jet lag by the end of it. Not that I’m complaining because anyone who went to any of these events last year will know just how incredible they are, it’s just that we might be more than ready for sleepy August when it arrives.

Those who have taken a wander down the Bell end (I know) of Walthamstow’s Hoe Street will have noticed the proliferation of lovely little shops and cafés incuding the new incarnation of the E17 Art House with its stunning gallery space. Many of these only seemed to have appeared in the last few months. Similar things have been happening in and around Leytonstone Church Lane too, including the Wild Goose Bakery, the Stone Space Gallery and now All You Read Is Love. Owners Karen and Anders had originally tried out their concept of a cafe cum bookshop as a pop up in Walthamstow’s Hoe Street Central, so it’s great to see them finally find a permanent home. I bought a used Cormac McCarthy novel from Anders, with a cake and coffee on the side. “I thoroughly recommend it” he said, a devilish glint in his eye “it’s really bloody”. He meant the book of course. I warmed to him immediately. I should of course say that they do ‘nice’ books as well, and a good selection of children’s books including some from their native Denmark. Anyway I wish them both the best of luck. Finally it is with great excitement that I welcome Yum Yum to the magazine, with the first of a series of seasonal recipes (page 23). They will of course be at the Walthamstow Garden Party in July but I can’t wait for their new restaurant to open in the Scene later this summer. Bring on the summer, let the party begin! COVER STAR

Cummings Twins As people will see from your website you work in a wide variety of mediums, in 2D and 3D. We choose whatever medium suits an idea best and get excited to utilise the latest in technologies and materials. We enjoy this form of exploration and what may appear as different threads periodically come together. We usually look for themes that appeal to us both and fortunately we are very similar in what interests us. You produce work as the Cummings Twins. How does that work? We often work together adding to each others ideas. Individually we specialise in different areas whether it be designing a model, assembling it, or creating the finished surface. We each explore different techniques, testing new materials, machines and even software that will all contribute to the final piece. We try not to be precious with the work and can trust each other to come up with something unexpected and interesting during the making process. Where and when can people see your work during the Arts Trail? Norlington Studios, 66 Norlington Road, Unit 24, Leyton E10 6LA between the 4th and 12th July

www.polgondaydream.com www.polgondaydream.net What do you like about living in Leytonstone? We’ve been here nearly 10 years and it’s great that there are now lots of other artists in the area. Places like the Stone Space Art Gallery has done a lot to bring the local creative community together. What have you planned for this year’s Leytonstone Arts Trail? We are very excited to be showing our new series of geometric sculptures. People can see life size wolves, a deer, a ram’s head, not to mention shamanic costumes and alchemical wall pictures. What is your background? We come from a very traditional art education in drawing and painting where

we were encouraged to use any medium at hand. This was a long time before computers became popular for making art. Thinking back we could never have imagined what is possible today. As commercial designers and illustrators how important is it producing your own personal work without the constraints of a client’s brief? With our personal work being more intuitive it opens us up to more experimentation and possibility, as opposed to working with an expected end goal. It’s great when a client wants our art and not just our skills. We often joke about corporate straight-jackets but sometimes we do get asked to ‘just wing it’ and it is then our creativity really flows. 1

Four women sitting in The Village pub eat scampi: old- school basket grub, content in blue jeans, no school shoes, they talk of moves to pastures newthe million things that they can do: to study art or learn to ballroom dance, boldly travel to new continents; of Shakespeare’s blood baths, inside of Willie Lohman’s head. Of losing keys and Oyster cards, and having time for painting nails. And funny things that children said. And ways of burying the dead. Of students who rolled outwhile heads who rolled in; and teaching all those years was spoiled by constant change, and there’ll be changes yet, and how schools have become a safety net. Circles of acquaintance in their working lives. The knitting talk that features here is not Woman’s Weekly kind of fare but sharp designers’ rising fame. And, as in life, the talk will turn to sport, and Beckham’s teacher gives a quick report, England’s cricket hopes that came to nought. They move from hectic working world to verdant futures, up on higher ground. where the best grazing is to be found. Eithne Cullen writes stories and poems. This poem came out of an afternoon spent with friends who have worked in Waltham Forest for a long time. Find Forest Poets on Facebook and Twitter @ForestPoets

Party in the Park! This summer the Barbican and Create will once again be bringing together the best of Walthamstow’s creative and foodie communities to transform Lloyd Park into a truly local festival with an arty edge… Words by Karen Dunn. Forget wading through mud at Glastonbury, this summer you can enjoy festival season from the comfort of Lloyd Park again thanks to the return of the Walthamstow Garden Party. The Barbican and Create will be curating the summer party which sees a line up including world class music, local produce, craft stalls and kids entertainment and a what’s even better, in keeping with William Morris’s dream of ‘Art for All’, it’s completely free! The weekend’s packed programme will feature music and dance stages showcasing international and local talent, including man of the moment Ghost Poet and Nigerian afrobeat star Femi Kuti. If you prefer your salsa with a bit of rock’n’roll attitude check out LA-33, while ska legends 18

Skatalites will be there to get everyone up on their feet. Musical locals will also be performing including acts curated by Stow Festival, Soul Collective and the E17 Jazz collective, plus performers from local schools. Don’t forget to go and listen to the winner of this year’s Waltham Forest’s Got Talent, Habone Mohammed, too. If you’d rather rest your own legs while someone else does the work, award winning hip hop dance company Blue Boy Entertainment will be busting some moves for your entertainment or you can marvel at Leyton-based Gravity Circus Centre as they bring stage performances and walkabout acts to the park.

There’s also a whole host of free activities if you fancy getting creative. The Useful and Beautiful Craft Marquee and Trail will spill out of the William Morris Gallery and onto the lawns so adults and little ones alike can try their hands at printmaking, stitching, woodwork, jewellery making, ceramics and T Shirt printing to name just a few. You can even purchase products from local designers by popping into the E17 Designers marquee for ready-made makes. While you’re welcome to bring your own picnics to enjoy on the grass, don’t forget to treat yourself to the finest produce Waltham Forest has to offer. Artillery Island will not only have a programme of poetry, storytelling and comedy, but will also be hosting the Appetite Festival serving up everything from organic veg to decadent cakes. Keen gardeners can also get their marrows at the ready to compete at

Cultivate’s first ever Summer Produce Show and if you’re still peckish head over to the Real Food Festival area with street food from across the world. All of this and we haven’t even mentioned the pop up cinema and kids activities all over the site. Just like the Arts Trail it’s going to be a mission to squeeze it all in, but come rain or shine (and we’re really hoping for the latter) it’s guaranteed to be fun for all. The Walthamstow Garden Party is a free festival happening in Lloyd Park on 18 – 19 July. For more information on acts and events, visit: www. walthamstowgardenparty.com or follow on Twitter by searching #WGP2015

Walthamstow’s Got Talent! Beyond Barbican producer Rachel Smith gives the E List her rundown on what not to miss this year… What local talent is involved this year? So much! Exciting new additions this year include Stow Festival who’ll be introducing us to some of Walthamstow’s best bands on the News From Nowhere Stage, a pop-up cinema from Stow Film Lounge and a comedy night hosted by Red Imp Comedy. There’ll also be spoken word and music by young people from across the borough including work developed as part of our Junior Poets programme led by Young Poet Laureate for London, and Walthamstow resident, Aisling Fahey. How will it be different from last year’s event? We’re very excited to have a huge Big Top as the venue for our main music stage and dance stages this year. The line-up is fantastic and it means whatever the British weather throws our way, the atmosphere inside the Big Top is most definitely going to be hot! What’s your weekend must see? On Saturday, as the music wraps up on the main stage and the sun begins to set, be sure to leave the park via the William Morris Gallery to catch a glimpse of The Magic Carpet by local artist Zarah Hussain. Projected onto the facade of the Gallery, the animation will take inspiration from Islamic geometric design to create a stunning piece of contemporary art. 19

And carry on the Party! Fresh from the coup of bringing Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore to Walthamstow with the incredible Steve Noble, and sold out shows from Evan Parker and Marcus Bonfanti earlier this year, Janus Sounds has organised the first ‘Janus Sounds Weekender’. Jessica Tobiah finds out more. The Weekender will see three concerts on consecutive evenings in E17, with an emphasis on variety. The concerts fit nicely around the Walthamstow Garden Party, with Friday providing a great appetiser, and the Saturday and Sunday evening shows providing a great way to keep the party going with the Garden Party signposting the gigs to punters looking for more music (although given the popularity of previous events booking in advance is recommended). Friday (17th) night is Jazz, with multiple BBC award winner and MOBO nominee Tony Kofi (Specific Jazz / Jazzwerkstatt) and his Sphinx Trio playing. Jazz FM flag Tony as “one of the most indemand reeds players”, with the FT explaining that “though Kofi is steeped in tradition, there is nothing retrograde about his saxophone playing”. Tony has played and recorded with the legendary figure Ornette Coleman who sadly passed away last month, and formed part of the king of New Orleans, Dr. John’s horn section on his most recent trip to London. Tony’s band Larry Bartley and Rod Youngs also has significant pedigree – Rod played with Gil Scott Heron! Support from Them Blends. Saturday night (18th) will see beautifully arranged Electropop from Grasscut. Described by Q as “completely beguling” and by The Sunday Times as “Ghostly, weird and enveloping electronica”, Grasscut have released on Ninja Tune, 20

and their latest album ‘Everyone was a Bird’ was released on Lo Recordings to critical acclaim from the likes of Clash Music and The Quietus. Red Imp Comedy Preview Season

For the fifth year running Red Imp’s Susan Murray has programmed a stunning season of Edinburgh Previews at Walthamstow’s Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre Pub. Kicking off on July 6th with Stewart Lee doing a two hour work in progress for his TV show ‘Comedy Vehicle’, there will be plenty to choose from up until the season closes on July 14th. Chief Red Imp Susan said “We’ve got some old favourites back again like Richard Herring and Simon Munnery but also some more recent acts like Marcus Brigstocke and Josh Widdecombe returning because they like the club so much. It’s the audience that makes a club so good and our audience really are amazing. I always try and balance the sexes but last year the women outshone the men by far so I’ve got loads of women on this year. There are Red Imp favourites like Kerry Godliman and Mary Bourke plus I’m really excited about award winning Bridget Christie coming back with her new show.”

in the Spring which proved very popular. “There are so many circuit comedians who aren’t famous for a variety of arbitrary reasons but who are just as brilliant as the famous ones. I really wanted to show my audience that just because someone hasn’t ‘been on the telly’ doesn’t mean they’re not excellent. They’ve all sold out and people have loved it, so I’m pretty happy.” As well as this Susan has booked the very first Red Imp 4 Kidz on July 12th at 3pm with Big Howard Little Howard, recommended for ages 5-12. The Stewart Lee gig was only available to the mailing list and is naturally sold out but don’t panic readers, as he’s back in September. To be signed up please go to http://eepurl.com/bqHCRb

After many years of bringing famous faces to E17, Susan programmed some ‘unknown’s in her Sick Squid (£6) season 21

Atique & Moy Choudhury

Yum Yum’s coming to town This summer a new and exciting chapter for Yum Yum Thai Restaurant begins when they open a new branch in The Scene, Cleveland Place, Walthamstow. Starting life as a humble 28-seat eatery in Stoke Newington Yum Yum has grown into one of the largest Thai restaurants in Europe, picking up a host of awards on the way. Dominic Mandrell caught up with founders Atique and Moy and new director Shaz to discuss their latest venture.

You wanted to stay in Stokey Yes we loved the area and luckily 300 yards round the corner, a beautiful Georgian building became available. We moved into it in 2006 and have never looked back. It was a big increase in size. Some said you would struggle to make it work Yes it had a capacity for 500 people, but by then we had built up very loyal customers and a really good kitchen team so we felt confident we could make it work. 22

I heard you now serve over a thousand people a week Yes, the media attention helped. In 2012 we were featured on Channel Four’s the ‘F Word’ with Gordon Ramsay, and we’ve been twice featured on BBC2’s Masterchef. What got you interested in opening a new branch of Yum Yum in Walthamstow? We realised many of our customers were travelling in from E17, E4, E11 and E10 to enjoy our cuisine and service. Plus the borough is going through a healthy phase of regeneration right now so we felt we should be part of that change. Plus you had people like me badgering you as well! Yes, that too! (Laughter) We are very excited to be opening a Yum Yum in Central Walthamstow - the only Thai restaurant offering food and service at this level of quality in the whole borough. The local community is vibrant, progressive and is looking forward to our arrival, so we feel we are in the right place at the right time! Exciting

Yum Yum was a key business in the regeneration of Stoke Newington, not many people realise how rough the area was when you first opened. Atique and Moy: Yes, back in 1990 there were boarded up shops on Church Street - but we still saw the potential. The restaurant was small - only 28 covers, but we were successful enough, that before long, we needed bigger premises.

opportunities like this require strong vision and management so we have expanded our team with some talented people. Moy and I are now brand ambassadors with Shaz Yousuf managing. Senior chefs Wantavee, Prasert and Thongsuk head up the kitchens. Shaz, your background is in education – a strong reason for you to be invited to join the team. Shaz: Yes I have been working in education and the hospitality sectors for the past 25 years, this made me a very attractive partner to Atique and Moy as I can deliver high quality workbased training to their staff. You’re driving the vision for the next chapter in Yum Yum, what can we expect to see at the new branch? The design of the restaurant is very much a blend of East-meetsWest. Our daytime trade will be distinctly different to the evening. During the day, we will be focusing on fast, fresh and healthy quick turnaround meals to appeal to people visiting the market or the cinema, and a family-friendly experience will be key. You’re developing a kids’ menu… Absolutely, we want to introduce a passion for Thai flavours early, and developing and widening a child’s vocabulary of taste is very important for their future health and wellbeing. Equally we don’t want to forget the business lunch crowd either; we aim to be the first choice venue for business meetings and staff get-togethers. The interior will be designed in such a way to accommodate all those different needs. So how will the evening trade be different? The ambiance will focus on a more relaxed, sophisticated dining experience, and to that end our cocktail bar will be staffed by some of the finest mixologists. We aim to be the first choice restaurant in the evening for that romantic date or to give yourself and the in-laws a little treat with or without the kids! Will you be using local businesses to source your ingredients? Our core ingredients we source direct from Thailand but we are also mindful of supporting local businesses and supply chains where appropriate. Our bar has started supporting the local Wild Card Brewery and will be offering E17 locally brewed real ales. So when will the new restaurant be opening? Late summer. We can’t give a specific date as yet, but we are very close to finalising. Sign up to the website or ‘like’ our Facebook page and we’ll keep you updated.

However there will be an opportunity for locals to try our food before we open. We are doing the Walthamstow Garden Party on 18th and 19th July in Lloyd Park. We’re offering an amazing prize for those that come down and buy food on the day. Finally, we’re looking for new recruits, so do get in touch. Spicy Green Papaya Salad SERVES 2 With the summer in full swing we felt the perfect first dish to kick off our seasonal E-list recipes had to be this classic zingy salad. It’s a Thai version of coleslaw, a crunchy salad combining cooling green papaya with a ferocious dressing and can be put together very quickly using a food processer. If time is on your side, however, try doing it the old fashioned way by grating the papaya with a mandolin and using a pestle and a mortar to make the dressing. It really does make all the difference. Top tip: Can’t find it in your supermarket? Support your local independent shops - Super Grows on Walthamstow High St. is a great source of fresh green papayas, certain market stalls too.

• • • • • • • • • •

50g palm sugar 2 red birdseye chillies 4 cloves garlic, peeled 4 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice 2 tablespoons fish or soy sauce 8 cherry tomatoes, halved 1/2 a green papaya, peeled and grated -about 200g 1 medium carrot, peeled and grated 3 Thai long beans or 6 french beans topped and tailed and each cut into 4 peices 2 tablespoons roasted peanuts, crushed

1. Place the palm sugar in a plastic container and soften in the microwave on full power for 10 seconds. 2 Pound the chillies with the garlic, then add the palm sugar which will begin to dissolve. 3. Stir in the lime juice and fish or soy sauce followed by the cherry tomatoes. 4. Pound again briefly. 5. Place the papaya, carrots and beans in a mixing bowl. Sprinkle the crushed peanuts over, then pour on the dressing. 6. Mix thoroughly to coat everything with the dressing.

the Leytonstone Arts Trail – everyone gets involved. People open up their homes and even display art in the windows. It’s the antithesis of elitist.”

“Where I live in Canary Wharf, the landscape is changing so much day by day. Where once I could see hedgerows are wastelands and the skyline is now full of rows of cranes. While I live in a tower block with great views of the River Thames, one block of flats I can see from my balcony has been ripped down and I can see people’s old wallpaper from the inside. Common birds, such as sparrows, have also dwindled over the years. Robins are a bit posh but sparrows have always been there. Progress is inevitable, but this is what my art is about – not taking your environment for granted. I’ve lived in this area for 12 years and grew up in East Ham - that’s why I’m so interested in my local environment. And that’s also what is so great about

Brett Banks, from Highams Park, specialises in stone sculpture and wood carving. Recently informed that he must leave his Walthamstow studio, Maker’s Yard, due to a private housing development, his pieces are on display at various venues. Check them out at All You Read Is Love café, Creative Bloc’s Fill The Gap gallery and Waltham Forest Arts Club at St John’s church. “While my day job is as a shipping manager, in central London, with my art I specialise in stone sculpting and wood carving. Most of the stone I use comes from Zimbabwe, due to the colours and textures. I first met some Zimbabwean sculptors in an open-house sculpture workshop in Brighton. One of my pieces

Our venue used to be a branch of Boots at the entrance of Leytonstore tube station, but they found they weren’t selling much! So it shut down and we’ve been able to take over the empty shop, which is great. I’m exhibiting framed screen prints – past inspirations have included African textiles, body art, such as scarification, and floral decorations, which certain tribes use to frame their faces. The idea for my latest works at the Arts Trail come from a recent trip to Lanzarote - I studied the cacti there so they have an amazing texture.” Look & Listen ©Brett Banks

for the Leytonstone Arts Trail is a wood carving made from plywood – I’ve cut it in two so you can see the layers beneath. Another is a complete piece of tree bark, carved back to front. You’re looking at the inside through holes to see the outside, so it’s the reverse way of how you’d normally look at a tree. Another stone piece is dedicated to a friend who lost his brother 20 years ago – one hollow sculpture is the spirit, representing one brother embracing the other. The Trail is a huge positive for Leytonstore, as there aren’t many dedicated art studios in the area.”

Anna Newson-Lyons has been living in Leytonstone for more than a decade. A trained accountant, she moved back to the area for access to the City and is exhibiting at the Noted Eel & Pie House. “I was born in Ilford and studied a business degree at the University of West London. back to Waltham Forest Adult Institute and studied photography – they offered me an unconditional place at the University of East London. Since then I’ve exhibited at the Free Range group show at Brick Lane’s Truman Brewery. My Arts Trail project is a social documentary about the McDonaldsation of food and knowing where it comes from. The piece involved making my own book about the Eel and Pie shop – it’s my local pie and mash shop, and is the opposite of that. Everything is handmade on site and all of the eels are shipped over live from Holland, which is where the ancestors of the shop come from. What I love most about Arts Trail is that it brings it to people who haven’t experienced it before. The owners of the eel and pie shop came to see my show at Free Range - without the Arts Trail that would never have happened.”.

Wood Street Walls (WSW) have come a long way since we last caught up with co-founders Mark Clack & Tom Jackson with 13 murals under their belt, painted by some of the nation’s biggest street artists. Recently the guys have teamed up with Phlegm - a Waltham Forest resident and huge name in the street art world and Mark McClure, also based in the borough, a wood artist who’s erected a jaw-dropping piece just off Hoe Street. But it’s the Conor Harrington (above) that has really got people taking notice of the art popping up across the area. WSW co-founder Mark talks to Milli Richards. Photos by Joe O’Malley. 26

Painting the town red

“When we started the project last September, Tom and I put together a list of names that we wanted to get involved but I don’t think we ever imagined that within 6 months we’d be working with some of the biggest names in the business, as well as many emerging talents in the borough. Being huge fans of Conor Harrington’s work he was quickly added, but making it a reality seemed a long shot. To say we had to pinch ourselves when he agreed is an understatement.” Conor Harrington is an Irish artist that established his career on the graffiti scene in Cork. His outdoor murals receive critical acclaim whilst his gallery pieces have seen his career go from strength to strength with people such as Jared Leto, Damien Hirst and Alicia Keys owning his work. Earlier this year his dynamic street-art inspired Dance With The Devil piece sold for £77,500 (€103,644) – almost double its guide price – through the prestigious London auction house Bonhams. “We use the same process for all the artists we want to secure, so everyone is treated with a fair and even hand. Social media has been a very effective way to be contacted and for us to contact artists directly - we have amassed around 4,000 followers on twitter in a short space of time and get messages through our facebook page and instagram too. When Family Mosaic Trust

agreed to donate the wall on Ray Dudley Way and loved Conor’s work, we knew we had to take the opportunity. Thankfully, Conor hadn’t done an outdoor piece in the UK for a while so he was up for the challenge - large walls in London are very scarce – Conor normally saves the large pieces for other cities around the world such as Arkansas etc. It really was just good timing that the wall was exactly what he was looking for. As a group we are self funding the majority of our walls. With both our group and Conor agreeing to do this free of charge and paying for materials and equipment from our own pocket getting support from Star Platforms, who we sourced the scissor lift from, is really valuable as costs for a wall of this size can soon mount up.” Conor’s style is always centred around realistic images of people, with his work drawing a fine line between the classical and contemporary. He has become a central figure within a new breed of young artists tackling socio-political themes using fine art techniques in a context formerly reserved for street artists. The beautiful mural which took just under 3 days to finish, found between Walthamstow Central and Walthamstow Queens Road, centres on two of his signature colonial men and has received huge praise from the street art community and local residents.

“Working with Conor was an amazing experience for us and we’re so pleased with the result - it’s breath taking and a great addition for the Wood Street Walls street art tour, even better that we got it complete in time for the E17 Arts Trail.” Since going to print the guys will have erected another 3 murals across the borough, including one by one of the original street artists - Inkie. So who have the team got their sights on next? “After delivering 14 walls of public art all self funded, we are now moving into our next phase - establishing an affordable art space in order to encourage more artists who live in the borough to ply their trade here too - we are confident if we have the full backing of the council we can, most importantly, make this a self sustaining project, where the community can benefit from free periodic workshops from the resident artists. If local businesses or residents do have walls to donate they can still get in touch as we have lots of artists looking to get involved. We’d love to partner with a local scaffold company to help cushion the costs to allow us to create really large outdoor pieces consistently.” www.woodstreetwalls.co.uk @woodstreetwalls

Tell us a bit about yourself, Lili. I’ve worked in the arts and culture sector for many years. I organise events and manage communications at The Freud Museum in Hampstead. I’m also a practising artist working primarily in performance art. I’ll be combining the two in August, with a performative/participatory archaeological dig in Freud’s garden. What is planned for the Highams Park Festival? The first ever Highams Park Festival will take place from 9-26 July. It is a celebration of the wealth of creativity to be found in the area. There are over 50 exhibitions and events. Highlights include an arts trail, poetry trail, our second Jumble Trail, a herb and heritage walk, pop up restaurants, a Classic and Retro Car Boot Sale, a Wind Quintet Concert, and last but not least, the already established Highams Park Day: our village fete, on 11 July. Why now? There is a large and growing creative community in Highams Park. In addition community spirit is at an all-time high; due to the various groups and committees all working tirelessly for the betterment of the area. People, who don’t usually take part, are getting involved as they can see the difference it is making. So it seemed only right for us to celebrate all that is great about HP with a festival of our own. What is your role in the Highams Park Community Plan? I’m a member of the coordinating committee and Chair of ARC – the Associated Arts and Culture Group. ARC is one of many groups working in various areas, such as green spaces, shops and businesses, etc. Local people are putting a plan together for the future of the area, putting projects into action. The Highams Park Festival is just one of many such projects.

You opened a popular vintage shop and arts space Xylonite Arts last year. Tell us about that. Yes, Xylonite Arts was born though the clear need for an arts space in the area. We ran an art auction and temporary exhibitions and events. Although the space recently closed on Winchester Road, I am currently in discussion regarding a permanent space and will reopen in a new home later this year. Why the name Xylonite Arts ? The name was inspired by my interest in social history and my love of all things vintage. It‘s a nod to the former Halex Factory, owned by The British Xylonite Company, which was situated in Highams Park until 1971. In its early days the factory produced fake tortoise shell, Bakelite and ivory. In its later years it was one of the world’s largest supplier of ping pong balls! Finally, can you give us the latest on the possible opening of the old Regal Highams Park as a small independent cinema? There are great plans for the area, including very positive rumblings regarding the proposed art house cinema. I’m afraid, if I tell you more than that I’d have to kill you…! Sorry.

Anders and Karen are Danish siblings whose dream to open a café celebrating a life long love of books has come true. Photos by Tom Gold. With combined backgrounds in politics, religion, creative writing and arranging events, the pair were keen to set up the sort of integrated cafe/bar/bookshop that are so popular in Europe. Having visited friends in Leyton they felt a real change happening in Waltham Forest and that it would be exciting to be part of that, so set about finding premises. After just three very successful weeks as a pop-up shop in Walthamstow their All You Read Is Love venture found new pop-up premises on Leytonstone High Road, but were thrilled and humbled to be offered a long-term contract. With shed-loads of help and support from the local community, Karen and Anders have worked very hard to establish their multifaceted destination. In fact, it has evolved into a meeting place, gallery and music venue too, ticking so many boxes for the pair, and for Leytonstone. It has that perfect homely atmosphere, as relaxed as visiting a friend’s house rather than a cafe.

Architectural historian, Karen Averby uncovers curiosities and stories from Walthamstow’s rich and varied past

The Wizard on the Wing Leytonstone FC was formed in 1886 and was based at Granleigh Road adjacent to the Midland Railway’s station. It had one of the most impressive club records within English amateur football, being especially successful in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, winning the FA Amateur Cup in 1947, 1948 and 1968 and becoming Isthmian League Champions seven times. In the 1946-7 and 1947-8 seasons they achieved the rare accolade of winning both the Isthmian League title and FA Amateur Cup titles. One of the players responsible for this success was skilful winger Leon Joseph, known as the Wizard on the Wing, who played for the club during these golden years. Born in Stepney in 1920 his career with Leytonstone was interrupted by the onset of the Second World War 1939-1945 in which he served with the Royal Fusiliers in Italy. He was badly injured twice, receiving a shrapnel wound to his upper leg, but after the war, undeterred and apparently unaffected by this, he went on to become somewhat of a legend within amateur football. His numerous

honours included eleven Amateur International caps, an FA Amateur Cup winners medal and he represented the Isthmian League representative side many times.

place at the time. To supplement his income he ran a successful menswear shop beneath the railway arches on Leytonstone High Road which he was reluctant to relinquish.

There are several accounts of his amazing prowess. Recalling Leon’s performance during a match against Charterhouse School, a matchgoer stated “I can still see, and marvel at the sight of Leon Joseph racing down the left wing, bouncing the ball almost casually from knee to knee. As I recall, the score was 17-0!” He was scouted by Tottenham Hotspur who wanted him to turn professional, but although he played one match with them in 1947 as an amateur, he refused their offer to play professionally reportedly because of the very low maximum footballers wage in

He was a popular local personality, and drew substantial crowds to the club’s Saturday night socials, where he would often sing and play the banjo. As well as being a singer and musician, he also enjoyed snooker and cricket. Such was his popularity, that at his testimonial match in 1956 the crowd numbered 8000, around 24 times the usual attendance at matches at that time. Leytonstone High Road was blocked with throngs of people and it was said that “The crowd hadn’t come for the match. They had come to pay homage to one of amateur sport’s greatest figures.” It would be interesting to find a modern-day counterpart to Leon Jospeh, but it is doubtful that a business-owning, snooker and cricketplaying, banjo-playing singer and footballer could be found. As the saying goes, they really don’t make them like that anymore. www.archangelheritage.co.uk

You’re an Eastender but have moved around a fair bit. Yes I was born in Hackney, but our family moved to Bristol when I was about five where I lived till I was 18. I then moved to the USA where I worked with young people involved in gangs and from disadvantaged backgrounds for nearly six years. My extended family all lived around the East End and went to church in Leytonstone. That led me to finally return and settle in Woodford Green.

Was it your own experiences that inspired you to set up the Soul Project on Wood Street. TSP Youth Space (The Soul Project) Supporting Our Unique Londoners was established in 2006. I had always been working with young people in one shape or form, but after my cousin was killed through knife crime I was motivated to set up a charity that is all about engaging young people in positive activities. What was your background? I had done a bit of property development from an early age, but decided to redirect my finances to setting up this project. I had been a child actor appearing on TV and in the theatre, and it was those skills that took me to the US where I used drama therapy to engage young people with anger management issues. On my return I worked as a residential social worker and ran a semi-independent living unit before going on to working with Newham Social Services 36

and then Newham Youth Offending Team. From everything I’d learnt in those jobs I developed the idea of using a business, Tumble In the Jungle, to generate an income that would help support working with young people within our community. Is the project and space intended for any particular types of kids or is it open to everyone? Our project / centre is open to all, you don’t need a referral you can just come along and complete a free membership form.

offer. Yes, from Monday 27th July – Friday 14th August we have a three week Summer Holiday programme. 9.30am till 3.30pm each day. Young people can attend and take part in a wide range of activities such as music production, graphic design, sport, dance, and arts and crafts. We will also take the young people out on local trips like to the Olympic village and Epping Forest . Unfortunately due to cuts in funding we now have to charge £10 per day per child.

You don’t have to live in Waltham Forest to attend and young people also come from neighbouring boroughs.

I see you have X Boxes but you also provide a lot of creative outlets for kid’s energy. Every Tuesday and Wednesday, from 5-7pm term times it’s completely free for young people to attend the youth club. They can drop by and enjoy the X-Box, snooker, games etc. But our aim is to encourage young people to get involved in an activity where they will learn a new skill or build on their self-esteem / confidence. So our Soul Studio delivers a programme of music production and video editing. Our skilled Youth Workers also teach graphic design, photography and basic multi-media skills. We always have some type of art project going on and workshops in a variety of subjects.

Many parents will know the project’s work from the holiday programmes on

Music’s a very important part of life at the club. Kids can even get singing lessons

Our Youth Space is aimed at young people aged 8 to 14 years old. We also have some sessions that start at 7 and have programmes running for 14+ at different times. To illustrate the variety of what’s on offer; on Tuesdays for example we run an integrated programme for teenagers with autism and also play host to the Police Cadets who use our centre for their training.

What sort of kid were you? I was a very confident young man growing up, and had a lot of friends from very different backgrounds. I think I gave my teachers a tough time and could be very distracting to others in class. I was what you would call the class clown, always trying to make people laugh and playing practical jokes.

I hear. Absolutely we also do singing, dance and drama activities. At the end of each term we normally put on a showcase, where the young people get to show what they have learnt. There is also an opportunity to make music videos and short films which can be seen on our YouTube channel TSPYS. It must be very rewarding seeing kids confidence bloom. You certainly can see the confidence grow in young people who get involved in these activities. We have reports from teachers all the time about how well a pupil is doing as they come out of their shell. We run singing and dance competitions each year and the winners go on to represent the Soul Project at international events as well as events across the borough. You have an excellent team of largely volunteers at the Project. Tell us about some of the people you work with. Yes, our volunteers have a range of skills and have supported the project in many different ways. From running our Charity Shop to fundraising events to helping with the maintance around the building. We are currently looking for 1824 year olds that would like to volunteer and help with our summer holiday programme.

They will get training, travel expenses, lunch and a certificate at the end. We will even provide a reference for future employment. If adults want to help out, how can they get involved? They can leave their name and number at reception, or email a CV to Rani@thesoulproject.com. We are always looking at building on our resources within the Youth Space, so donations of computers, laptops, game consoles, and sports equipment will always be appreciated. There is also a programme where you train up Youth Champions. Our Youth Champion programme is aimed at 10 – 14+ year olds. We train young people to become ambassadors for The Soul Project. They will do presentations, organise and run fundraising events, learning skills that will make them more employable in the future. Last year our Youth Champions went white water rafting and raised over £1,000 for the Charity. How are you funded? All income generated from Tumble In The Jungle goes to the running of our Youth Space activities. All funding raised ensures that at least 90% of our services are completely free. You can

donate by texting TSPY40£ then the amount you want to donate e.g. £1 = TSPY40£1 to 70070 or making a donation at Tumble In The Jungle’s Reception. What would you like to see for the future of the project? Right now just being able to secure ongoing funding so that we can continue to deliver free services for young people would be good. Enhancing our resources and being able to increase the capacity to work with more young people from across the borough. And finally with so many recent changes in Waltham Forest, anything we still desperately need? I think that due to the housing shortage situation we are at risk of losing good community facilities. Good old fashioned youth clubs seem to be disappearing from this borough. I would love to see a purpose built hub / community centre designed around the needs of young people and the wider community. A place that was well supported and resourced and secured for years to come. www.tspyouthspace.weebly.com

Walthamstow Diary Between forest and marsh lies the glorious Stow. These are the tales and meanderings of a proud resident of E17 I don’t usually write this column on a subject I have already blogged about on www.walthamstowdiary. com, but I have had to make an exception for this issue. I feel the need to tell you about an adventure I went on a couple of weeks ago in the Lighthouse Church on Markhouse Road. OK, so I admit an adventure in a church may not sound that interesting, but this one was. I wrote about the Lighthouse in a previous issue, this building has always been one of my favourites in Walthamstow, but I had never been inside, but that’s all changed. My friend Emma Scutt painted the Church for her Walthamstow calendar, and after speaking to the team at the Lighthouse, she managed to arrange a private tour for us.

We met outside the Church one Saturday morning and were greeted by Charles and Eunice. Charles was our tour guide and before long he had led us from the meeting rooms that fill the ground floor to the unexpectedly beautiful little chapel upstairs. The layout of the church has changed a great deal since it was built, but the chapel, complete with original pews still has loads of character. Charles asked us if we wanted to climb to the top of the tower, to which we both replied a very enthusiastic yes! The tower is accessed via a number of ancient wooden ladders, each leading through trap doors to creaking wooden floors. The timbers and brick work inside are covered in what feels like two hundred years of dust. As we climbed the ever narrowing tower, we got occasional glimpses of the world outside through small windows and vents in the thick walls. Eventually we reached the top and took it in turns to climb into the lantern. The view from the top was cracking! Stratford, Alexandra Palace, the Marshes, Forest and even my garden are all visible. Eventually and with some reluctance, we slowly made our way back down the old ladders to ground level. How did we top of our adventure, with a nice cuppa of course. www.walthamstowdiary.com
