COVER STAR Ros Shiers
Hi Ros. This month’s E list cover features your portrait of Frank the French Bulldog. I can see you and your husband Mike are big dog fans. Yes we love dogs, Bailey joined the family 6 years ago. He is a Puggle (half Pug/half Beagle). He’s a lovely dog with a great spirit, quite mad at times but lots of fun and full of energy. Bailey inspired me to start drawing dogs. Frank the French Bulldog is one of my most popular illustrations and a favourite of ours. We hope to get another dog one day and Mike would love a Frenchie, I’m a big fan of Border
Terriers, I love their characters.
designs (a Pug, a Border Terrier, a Bulldog, a Whippet, a Boston Terrier and a Beagle) but has since increased to over 45 inspired by customer requests to include more breeds.
You draw many other animals including cats but what is it about dogs. I was brought up with dogs and have always loved them. I think cats are beautiful animals but personally I find there is something about dog’s characters in their eyes, expressive faces and personalities which I find really interesting to try and capture.
Each portrait is hand drawn and I then design products from these such as art prints, stationery, greetings cards and wrapping paper etc. I would really love to work on a range of wallpaper at some point and also expand the range.
Tell us how your passion became a business. The dogs and animals have become the signature of a brand (www.ros-shiers.com) created by Mike and I. The dog collection began with just 6
I have an online shop on my website and also sell through Notonthehighstreet, Etsy, Hard to Find etc. together with sales through shops around the UK and have stockists worldwide.

Mike runs the events side of the business and you’ll find him at fairs and markets most weekends across London. Finally I offer a bespoke dog portrait service which is very popular and a side of the business that I love. What’s your creative background? I always loved drawing as a child and art classes at school. I had a wonderful art teacher Mr Howard who encouraged me. I gained a First in Illustration from Brighton University where I was lucky to be tutored by the artist Ian Wright who became a great inspiration to me.
After graduation I moved to London to live with my twin sister who had studied fashion design. We set up a small clothing label together where I was print designer. Following this I worked as a freelance illustrator and got to work for big name clients including Stella McCartney and Nokia. Whilst freelancing I added a small shop to my website selling a handful of art prints, which proved popular and has steadily grown to where we are now. What have you got planned next? To continue adding new designs to the collection, I’d like to increase the other
animals I have in the range, and perhaps start doing some portraits of people. I’d also like to set aside some time to just experiment with some new ideas/work and maybe have an exhibition. We’ve got lots of weekend events planned across London in the next few months, Highgate and Hampstead summer fairs and the Walthamstow Garden Party. Finally we’ll be exhibiting at Stylist Live and Spirit of Christmas in November so it’s all very exciting.

As I’m writing this, summer’s well and truly arrived. Our studio is nudging 30C and the sound of fans is deafening. I am attempting to drown them out with Blur’s ‘Parklife’, a classic album ubiquitous to the early 90s and featuring an iconic cover photo taken at Walthamstow Dog Track. There are many reasons for this particular choice to accompany the putting to bed of this particular issue. Not least because I’ve learnt that lead singer Damon Albarn’s dad Keith was a tutor at the Walthamstow School of Art and is back this month to run one of the classes as part of the Summer Art School organised by Create (see p11 and see 13 July of the listings).

Also the title song brilliantly evokes the sounds and atmosphere of a city park where – through children and the love of outdoor space – whole communities gather to enjoy the summer. Over the next few months Soho Theatre and Waltham Forest Council have worked together to create a Park Festival using exciting and innovative ways to involve local people in these urban spaces through theatre and storytelling (see page 9). July has the fantastic Walthamstow Garden Party (see p6) happening over the weekend of the 15/16 with all sorts of things to do including art, theatre and crafts but also featuring an extraordinary musical line up, bringing artists from around the world but also celebrating local talent.

As a kid I remember endless weeks of fun at the local outdoor swimming pool. Sadly it like the majority of lidos has long since been filled in and grassed over. Perculiar Times (see p33) this month recalls the two enormous lidos that existed in the borough until as recently as the 1990s. The Larkswood Lido in Chingford attracted an incredible 290,400 visitors in one year in its heyday. On a day like today I wish a developer out there would just jump in and build us a new one. Time for a lido renaissance! Finally Leytonstone has not just one but two festivals happening in July. All your senses can be sated by art, music and culture through the Leytonstone Arts Trail (see p3) and the Leytonstone Festival (see p37). Time to hit the streets.

It’s ten years since the Leytonstone Arts Trail first rounded up some of the areas most creative residents to bring art to everyone. This year’s offering is bigger and better than before, but remains true to the original vision of experimentation and inclusivity, so you can navigate the neighbourhood in a new way. With the first ever trail kicking off in 2008, the community event run by local volunteers
has celebrated the artistic heritage of the area from David Bailey to Grayson Perry. But you don’t have to be a fully-fledged artist to take part. Everyone from toddlers to pensioners are encouraged to share their skills across the borough - and all get equal billing. The great thing about Art Trails is they are not all about stuffy art galleries. Churches, cafes, pubs and even people’s gardens are venues on this year’s trail, so you can combine
taking in the exhibitions with a cheeky pint or nose around someone’s creative space. With over 100 artists taking part in 40 locations there are too many exciting exhibitions to mention. Several venues are showing multiple artists so you can get your creative fix in one place. Norlington Studios is one of these with shows including the Big Little Art Fair, which is raising funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Artist Carne Griffiths is showing a variety of
works including ink and tea on paper curiosities not to mention a virtual reality doodling experience as well as Willie Nash’s surreal photographs. Hit the pubs for some great shows including Jeff Moore and Andy White’s People of Leytonstone at The Northcote, Veronica LindsayAddy’s paintings at Leyton Technical and Sue McQueen’s imaginative drawings and paintings inspired by aspects of landscape at the North Star. if you prefer a coffee and some cake, head to the Wild Goose Bakery to check out illustrations and typography by Helen Storm. Claire Brett’s unique location is a tiny shed in a garden on Beacontree Road showing a collection of mixed media art and photographs. You can also weave your own Ojo de Dios. Her unusual venue gives more than a nod to The Leytonstone School Of Contemporary Art, which was actually a shed in the back garden of artist Bob and Roberta Smith’s home in Leytonstone. Not only did the flat-packed gallery have an international reputation, but it once went on a tour to the Serpentine Gallery! 4
Carl Brewster’s show at Chef’s Corner embraces local language using visuals to get you to say what you see, while Sean Worrall’s #43artdrop shows how the cumulative effect of daily repetition of one simple form adds up to something more. It’s not too late to get involved too. Let’s Fill Leytonstone With Art is running again this year so children – and adults – can put their own art works up in their windows for everyone to see. Not only can you show off your talents, it also makes the area even more vibrant than usual. With events aimed at giving people tasters of different types of creative thinking and making. funded community project at Jenny Hammond Primary School, are also doing a free family drawing workshop at Cann Hall Baptist church. Katja Rosenberg, curator and founder of Art Catcher, is inviting people to join her and other artists creating large flowers from recycled materials at St John’s Church, and there are free art workshops at Leytonstone Library running throughout the day on Saturday 8 July. There will also be lots of other events running in tandem with the Trail. There’s the opportunity to buy locally made items from designer/makers at Stones Throw Market on the first day of the Trail at St John’s Church. Also not to be
missed are the Chingford Morris Men giving a performance outside the Tube on 3 July. For live poetry and storytelling, head to the Quaker Meeting House where there are events around their exhibition When Imagination Wakens. So hit the streets and get creative!

Leytonstone Festival 2017 Coinciding with this year’s Leytonstone Arts Trial (see page 3) the Leytonstone Festival returns and this year promises to be another fantastic fortnight of events, many of which are free! Last year the Festival saw an eclectic mix of music (jazz, soul, hiphop, classical guitar and more), dance, films, theatre and Shakespeare, a cider and ale festival, history talks, graffiti artists and paper lantern-making. Combining all that already goes on in venues across Leytonstone with exciting new events and acts we have a fun fortnight planned which guarantees something for everyone! Everyone is welcome to come along to our Opening Event which will be held at St John’s Church High Road Leytonstone on Saturday, 1 July from 1pm. The afternoon will be busy with The Stones Throw market, live music, art and drama. You can also help decorate Leytonstone with our bunting making stall. Party in the Park Lloyd Park will once again showcase Walthamstow’s vibrant community spirit at the annual Walthamstow Garden Party. Ideal for the entire family, the festival will include craft workshops, world music and much more. Franki Black takes a closer look. It’s almost time for the much-anticipated Walthamstow Garden Party, which has seen over 30 000 people attending every year since 2014. Hosted in Lloyd Park on the 15th and 16th of July, this year’s event is presented by the Barbican and Create in partnership with the Walthamstow Forest Council and a variety of local organizations. There will be something for every member of the family, including music, theatre, dance, film, spoken word, arts, crafts, family activities and plenty of farm-to-fork goodness. Reminiscent of Victorian-era garden parties, this free local celebration of the arts will welcome local and international talents to its stages and tents. Performers include Janka Nabay (Sierra Leonean folk musician), The Heliocentrics (a Walthamstow-based collective focused on funk, jazz and psychedelia) and the Ska Vengers (a New 6
Delhi band blending ska rhythms with dub, jazz, punk and rap). The weekend festival forms part of the Beyond Barbican offsite programme and reflects the Barbican’s long-standing history with east London. “Last year over 70 local arts organisations, businesses and community groups were involved in the event and over 1,000 local performers,” explains Louise Jeffreys, Director of Arts at the Barbican during a recent interview with the E List. “We are incredibly proud to help provide a platform for such a wide range of local talent and creating unforgettable memories for the Walthamstow community.” From a festive bar area to niche tents dedicated to a variety of cultural endeavors, this year’s festival will not disappoint. The News From Nowhere stage will play host
to dance and circus acts with Boy Blue Entertainment presenting performances and workshops for adults and young people, while MovE17 will delight visitors with a dazzling community-driven flashmob. Nearby, the Earthly Paradise tent will see performances by the Barbican Young Poets, Barbican Junior Poets and Young Songwriters, while the Glittering Plains dance tent is ideal for those in search of pulse-racing dance and music. Crafty types will once again have the chance to join the Be Magnificent Craft Trail, which is a family-friendly programme focused on practical craft-making skills such as ceramics, embroidery, wallpaper design, woodwork, printmaking and more. Standing outside the William Morris Gallery will be artist Gayle Chong Kwan’s sculpture: The People’s Forest. Here visitors can learn about tree management and ancient woodlands, such as Epping Forest, and create miniature sculptures to add to the ‘growing’ tree. The final version will be installed in the Barbican Foyers in autumn. There will also be plenty of action to keep the kids entertained throughout the festival. Grow Wild, Lloyd Park Skate Jam, sporting groups and Drumworks will all host kidfocused activities and workshops, while the Stow Film Lounge will present Kids on
The Heliocentrics. First appearing on DJ Shadow’s The Outsider and bringing his intricate music to life, the band then went on to tour with the Ethiopian Jazz superstar Mulatu Astatke and work with the producer Gaslamp Killer. They’re a group for whom genres are meaningless and boundaries invisible, with their music floating through jazz, hip-hop and psychedelic genres to create an ethereal and hypnotic sound.
Screen and the Kids’ Film Lounge, complete with interactive mini exhibitions. Finally, hungry (and thirsty!) visitors are invited to Fellowship Island, where a wide range of food vendors will be selling delicious local brews and homegrown meals. As a passionate Waltham Forest local, Louise Jeffreys is particularly excited about seeing the imagination of her local community on display at the festival. “The vibrancy and diversity of Walthamstow’s burgeoning arts scene has made this festival truly special,” she says. “Our aim is to make the arts available to all and we’re passionate about ensuring the festival continues to be a catalyst for new ideas, ambitious thinking and innovative collaborations - it promises to be a fantastic day out for all ages in the heart of Walthamstow.”

Reggae and Ska founding fathers Toots and the Maytals bring the summer spirit with a performance of classics from across their back catalogue. Releasing their first album in the early 60s, Toots and the Maytals quickly established themselves as leading purveyors of the Reggae sound, and were pivotal in popularising the genre beyond Jamaica. Their take on the style, drawing on Funk, Rock, Soul and even Country revolutionised not only Reggae, but influenced countless others – indeed, their instantly recognisable songs, such as ‘Pressure Drop’, ‘Monkey Man’ and ‘54-46 Was My Number’, have been covered by artists like The Clash, The Specials and Amy Winehouse.

After months of whispers and speculation about Soho Theatre being involved in Waltham Forest’s cultural life somehow, Waltham Forest Council and the creative team at Soho Theatre have teamed up to celebrate the borough’s wonderful parks. Kirsty McNeil O’Connor discovers more about the Waltham Forest Parks Festival. “We at Soho Theatre are working with Waltham Forest Council to deliver a series of free events and creative activities across the borough from June right through to October. It’s all about getting out there and using the parks, getting more active - with a wide range of engagement for ALL ages,” says Soho Theatre’s Community Producer Rasheeda Nalumoso. She is keen to emphasise that it is just as important to turn up and enjoy the events as an audience as it is to take part. There are plenty of opportunities to participate in these wonderful events and it’s still not too late to get involved! 8
The Festival will span the borough; Ridgeway Park in Chingford, Highams Park, Coronation Gardens and Jubilee Park in Leyton, Langthorne Park in Leytonstone and Lloyd Park in Walthamstow. “There’s a lot going on,” continues Rasheeda, “There’s an epic community play: a new commission by playwright Ollie Birch a London based actor, writer and composer who is creating the play from scratch and working with the ensemble.” This includes weekly drop in classes in theatre skills for all at Gnome House on Monday evenings (for full details of how to be involved visit sohotheatre.com/young-people/waltham-
“Then there’s monthly ‘Picnics in the Park’ across the whole borough. The entire community is invited to come along,” she explains. You only need to bring your own food and drink to enjoy these events, held on Sunday afternoons and hosted by Soho Theatre to include great performances, interactive events, craft afternoons, etc. “In Leytonstone, there’s a chance to join a choir, the Waltham Voices, (you don’t continues on page 10

The drop-ins include workshops led by theatre industry professionals for anyone (16+) who wishes to attend. “This is an open call out, we’ve been working to get as many different people involved, all ages and abilities and we don’t just want or need those who will perform but those who want to work back stage, gain some experience in any area of theatre, we will encourage that.” explains Rasheeda. The final play will be performed in Lloyd Park on August Bank Holiday Monday. “It will also include a promenade so hopefully it will engage a large audience as it moves through the paths of Lloyd Park.”

Create… Opportunities for all Hadrian Garrard, director of Create London talks to Kirsty McNeil-O’Connor about the forthcoming Summer Art School and Youth Programme – in conjunction with the outstanding exhibition Be Magnificent: Walthamstow School of Art 1957-1967 currently at the William Morris Gallery. You may have heard of Create, not least because of their pivotal role locally with the Walthamstow Garden Party and Blackhorse Workshops. Create aim to engage artists with the local communities in the towns and cities where they live and work. “There are so many artists in East London but often the creative community doesn’t really have a proper connection with the wider public, “ Hadrian explains. “I really felt there was a link missing, that we needed to prove why it is so good for towns to have artists but also how important it is that the rest of the community benefit from the situation too.” Formed in 2009, Create work across North East London, from Haringey to Barking & Dagenham and became a
charity in 2012. They were involved in many London Olympics events and the Open East Festival in 2013. Their projects vary but always with community engagement at the heart. (For their latest projects see createlondon.org) This month Create have organised a very special series of free events. The series of workshops, talks and screenings are all part of Be Magnificent – Walthamstow School of Art 1957-1967, the major exhibition currently showing at the William Morris Gallery (and featured in last month’s E-List magazine). Hadrian explains how he became involved in the exhibition “I was driving with my mum Sofiah and she pointed out Waltham Forest College, telling me that was where she had studied art

at 18. She did textiles and I had no idea about it. Her teacher was (now famous) fashion designer, Celia Birtwell.” Other teachers and alumni include Peter Blake, Ian Dury, Ken Russell and many more. Walthamstow School of Art had been an important place in the 1950s and 1960s. “The college had very little in the way of an archive so it was a very exciting research project.” Hadrian explains, “we found some really funny coverage by a local newspaper in Chingford about the goings on at the art college in the 60s. They certainly didn’t approve! So Walthamstow’s spirit of independence and creativity goes back a long way and those people’s footprints can still be seen and felt here today.” “These local art schools were such an important place for young people to experiment and develop their talent. So many of our great artists and pop bands started here and they should still be in every town today. So, we’ve now created a Be Magnificent Summer Art School to run alongside the exhibition.” The screenings, workshops and talks are with Walthamstow School of Art alumni and leading contemporary artists. and offer local people of all ages the opportunity to come and try out different disciplines and all for free.
“When it comes to young people, there are so few opportunities for 17 to 20 year olds to experiment, to try things out, so the school includes a ‘Be Magnificent Youth Programme’ which offer exclusive versions of the classes and workshops for school groups and under 21s hosted at the Waltham Forest College. Please contact us at Create to discover more about the programme and if you or your school would like to take part” “So, for two weeks this summer, the Walthamstow Art School will be resurrected with some of the tutors and students from the original school teaching or hosting events,” he says. “We are also taking this concept to this year’s Walthamstow Garden Party. We have all sorts of making areas planned for the ‘Be Magnificent Craft Trail’. People can do ceramics, wallpaper design, embroidery and more. And it’s the 50th anniversary of the ‘Summer of Love’ this year, so it’s going to be great!” Hadrian concludes.
The full programme of events runs 5–16 July 2017 so check the website for what’s on and booking information as the classes will be popular.

This is the place where William Morris lived, and posed for photos in its walled park; it fills with vibrant life when the sun shines. Daffodils shrink and tulips stride out in their place, heads heavy, colourful orbs of pink and white. Coppiced beech in symmetry among roses. A ribbon of water rushes past the path, and stirs and swirls with movement of the birds, deft ducks buoyed upon its rippling surface. Children run and swing, spinning to dizzying heights; skate through half-pipes and steer bikes over ramps. Prams and buggies glide along the paths, the youngsters tearing on to have some fun, voices rising in cheery, trilling chatter, at the adventure waiting round the bend. Beautiful objects grace the Water House, reflections of perfection in its grounds. Eithne Cullen has lived and worked in Waltham Forest for many years, she writes stories and poems and is a member of Forest Poets.

I must confess to being a less than avid shopper, shopping to me is usually a last resort, as far as activities go. Wood Street is different. From its long history in the area, to its colourful and unique shops, it is a living embodiment of the very character of Walthamstow. From vintage toy shops, to vinyl and DVD stores, it is a labyrinth of earthly delights. The tenants themselves have interesting histories and there is a living and thriving community of businesses that one couldn’t find elsewhere.
Lovers of vinyl and film will delight in Mike’s Records. Mike has been at Wood Street for 16 years and was an avid collector and lover of music long before he opened his shop. “Music is eternal, like great books, and I’ve seen a real
resurgence in the last five years. Prog and Bowie always sell well, though I like to cater for a broad range of customers”. This is evident in his large country and electronic music collections. “I like meeting people and for me the joy is in passing on music”. A visit to Wood Street Market is an uplifting and life-affirming experience. Like the Art Trail and the myriad of great community pubs in the area, it is a vivid and essential part of Walthamstow culture. It is to be celebrated and supported. Pay a visit and pick up a piece of living history.

I started at Mrs Tinsley’s Emporium a retro and vintage store packed to the gunwales with a smorgasbord of wares. Trudie, who has been a tenant here for fourteen months describes her shop as being akin to a ‘parlour bar’ with authentic Victoriana within. She describes her ‘love of vintage’ products as a starting point and sees her store as being an extension of her own home ‘my house is very like this inside’. It is a marvellously curated space with many original items from chest expanders to beautiful corsetry. A worthy starting point as you enter the market.
Gigi’s Dressing Room is a veritable museum of fashion and couture. Lovingly curated by Galina Sherri, her shop represents a unique offer, a styling service which provides an astonishing range of contemporary outfits that Galina has personally built up over the years. One of her most recent additions is the paradigm shifting Dior New Look dress, a 1950s creation which can be hired. As Galina explained. ‘I’d rather people could hire out this dress at a reasonable price than sell it to a fashion museum for a fortune’. It’s not often such noble sentiments are expressed and Galina’s shop oozes elegance and good taste. The New Look dress is but one example of a wondrous range of couture found in her shop. From Bowie replica jackets to Westwood heels, you’d be hard pressed not to find an outfit to suit the most capricious of customers.

Marsh Street was the original name of Walthamstow High Street where a number of large manor houses were used as weekend or summer retreats. Samuel Pepys’ bosses had houses here, and after visiting one of them Pepys described how they had drunk wine from a local vineyard and “the whole company said they never drank better foreign wine [than this one] in their lives”.
Not only will we help you find the right mortgage, but we will use our knowledge and expertise to ensure your mortgage transaction is completed swiftly and effectively, so you can concentrate on the other parts of buying your dream home.

House Doctor Penny Fielding offers creative solutions to everyday niggles you may have with your home.
The kitchen is the heart of the home and probably the most multifunctional room in the house so if you are planning a new one there’s usually a long wish list and never quite enough space to fulfill it, so it’s important that you make the most of what you have. Following on from last month’s column where I offered some tips on the kitchen layout, here are some insights into kitchen units. Most kitchen units are made up of an MDF carcass with the door being made of anything from laminated MDF to solid wood. A hand built kitchen will have a solid wood interior – gorgeous but on the expensive side. You can put your own units together by buying the carcass (IKEA do a very good one), and adding your own bespoke door, which you can have sprayed in any colour you like. The right handle can make a big style difference too. Fit the units with pull-out everything. It’s much easier to access your food, china and pans when you can pull them out on internal wire baskets. This keeps everything visible and is a really good use of the storage space. No bending and scrabbling around in the back of a cupboard, no large stacks of plates/pans that you have to un-stack to get to the item you want, and much easier to keep clean. Again, walk the space. How easy is it to get to the pan/plate I want. Think about ease and the ergonomic use of the storage. I’m a big fan of large fat drawer units where everything is really easy to see and get to, so have lots of these. You have the choice of having your appliances, fridge, dishwasher etc, “Integral” to the other kitchen units for a seamless look, but if you go for this bear in mind that you lose some space due to the depth of the door and these are slightly more expensive too. To be continued…. What niggles you about your home? Email penfielding@gmail.com with your thoughts. To book a session with the House Doctor please email: penfielding@gmail.com or call 07725 645 359. LOCAL HERO
Saira Mir Named ‘Muslim Woman of the Year’ in 2014 by Waltham Forest Council of Mosques, Saira Mir works tirelessly in our community. And now her charity, PL84U AL-SUFFA, has won an international award for its inter-faith work with our borough’s vulnerable and homeless. Saira talks to Silvana Gambini about her work. Photograph by Sanah Begum. Tell me a little bit about your background and how long you’ve lived in Walthamstow. My heritage is Pakistani but my grandparents moved to East Africa; I was the second generation in the family to be born there. In 1968, we moved to the UK and finally settled in Bradford (my Yorkshire accent still comes through!). My husband’s family also came to the UK in 1968, settling in East London, and I moved to Walthamstow when we got married in 1985 – firstly in Leyton and then here. What do you like about the Stow? I much prefer living here than my time up north – people are much friendlier in Walthamstow! I loved living in Bradford when I was there, but the pace of life is like a sleepy Sunday afternoon; so much more is going on here. Walthamstow’s diversity is marvellous, with so many different people and cultures to learn from. After 32 years here, I feel deeply rooted in this community and would like to thank everyone who has helped us with our charity work.

At first sight, your charity seems to have an unusual name – could you explain it for me? PL84U is simply ‘Plate for You’ in text-speak, because that is exactly what we are providing for our guests, a plate of hot, wholesome food (and they are guests to us, not ‘service users’). We are open to everyone in need in the borough, regardless of race, religion, colour, gender etc. The ‘AL-SUFFA’ part of the name acknowledges our family’s identity as Muslims. It means ‘verandah’ in Arabic and echoes the hospitality, food and lodgings which the Prophet Mohammed – peace be upon Him – provided for people who came to study under Him.
So how did PL84U AL-SUFFA get started? Many religions have charity at their core and giving to charity is one of the five pillars of Islam. As a family, we saw that there seemed to be a gap in provision on Sundays, with people in need not necessarily having a place to go on the one day of the week that a lot of people traditionally spend with family over a meal, so we decided to try and address that. In 2013, we secured six months’ start-up funding from ‘Near Neighbours’ (the Church Urban Fund) and then persuaded Muslim Aid, who were looking for a UK project, to continue funding us. We also get a lot of support from our local mosque, Faizan-e-Islam. All the family helps out, alongside our amazing team of volunteers, and my husband Farouk is a great support to me. We have a family joke “Mum’s the Chair - but Dad’s the stool!” Tell me about how PL84U AL-SUFFA operates and what services it provides. We offer a bi-monthly service – the first Sunday of the month at St Gabriel’s Family Centre and the third Sunday of the month at the Scout Hut on Wood Street. We open around 9.30-10am and close at 3.30pm. We’ve developed in stages - initially we were just able to offer a hot meal, then our service expanded to include a food and clothing bank as we get donations of tinned food
and clothing from our very generous local community. We also get food kindly donated from Leyton and Leytonstone Tescos thanks Jason and Stacey! – and Fairshare at Highams Park. We progressed to also offering ‘pampering’ sessions – a volunteer made contact with the Haircuts4Homeless charity (www.haircuts4homeless.com) who provide haircuts and manicures. The next service I’d like to be able to offer would be counselling sessions provided by professional volunteers, as the need is great. We’re also offering companionship and guests say it’s a safe and friendly environment and they feel like part of a family when they’re with us. We have lots of activities for them - board games, chess, makeshift table tennis – or they can just chat or have a nap. You speak of your guests very warmly… Of course! We’re all human beings. Everyone can be guilty of stereotyping others and those are the barriers I want to break down, so our homeless people feel part of society rather than excluded from it. We could all find ourselves in their position – a childhood trauma, an accident or illness, losing a job, a relationship breakdown, bereavement – anything could have the potential to derail our lives. Social isolation is also a big problem for the elderly and we’d like our Sunday sessions to give them a new lease of life too.
To advertise your business contact ads@theelist.co.uk 29
Our volunteers are all ages, from 18 upwards, and it’s lovely to see an elderly person talking to a young volunteer, sharing their life experiences and anecdotes. We are all about mixing the generations and building bridges. What kind of food is on offer? When we open, we offer teas and coffees and a light breakfast. Lunch is served around 12.30-1pm and I make the vegetarian dish but most of the food is bought in from ‘People’s Choice’ Punjab Caterers who do a great job for us. Health and safety regulations made our intention to cook and eat together with the guests too difficult but, with the bulk of the cooking taken care of, we have more time to socialise. Our initial idea was to serve a diverse menu to our diverse community and we served all manner of things – jerk chicken, pasta, chilli - as well as Asian dishes. But our guests told us that they preferred to have all Asian dishes to make it a special event for them! So now we serve curries, dhal and rice dishes, rolls, salads, ground rice pudding and fresh fruit and everyone gets a good meal. I see that the PL84U website paraphrases the words of murdered MP Jo Cox’s maiden speech to parliament... Tragic what happened to her – God rest her soul. Yes we say “we have far more in common with each
impressed by our work in the local community as a small grassroots charity.
other than things that divide us”. The Koran teaches us to treat all people even-handedly and with respect and kindness and that’s our charity’s ethos, as you don’t know what people have been through in their life. People are like flowers in a garden: such a huge range of shapes, sizes and colours and, when they are planted together, they’re a thing of beauty.
Collecting your award must have been quite an adventure! Our family of five was invited to Jordan with flights, accommodation, food, excursions etc all laid on by the Jordanian government. It was such an honour to meet the Jordanian Royal Family and have King Abdullah present me with the bronze medal and US$5,000 to help our work. It was a privilege to win it for Walthamstow and the UK and my parents are really proud - my mum tells her dialysis nurses all about me!
What was it like when the charity won a World Interfaith Harmony Week prize? More than a dream come true! I can’t remember who suggested we enter, but I’m so grateful they did. We organised a multifaith event with a wide variety of speakers: faith leaders, lots of youth involvement, councillors, the Mayor of Waltham Forest. My daughter Sanah videoed the event and we had two other photographers snapping away too, as we had to provide a lot of evidence and documentation to support our entry. Despite receiving an email confirming that we’d won third prize (Canada came first and Bosnia second), I wouldn’t believe it or tell anyone outside the family until it actually appeared on their website – I didn’t want a repeat of this year’s Oscars fiasco! Normally large formal organisations enter and win, but we were told that Princess Areej Ghazi, one of the judging panel, really lobbied hard for us,
And finally – what would you like to see in Walthamstow’s future? We’d love to see Waltham Forest Council officially promote World Interfaith Harmony Week in the first week of February. With all the misconceptions around religion (particularly Islam) in today’s world, their backing of this initiative would help promote understanding and community cohesion locally. For more information on PL84U AL-SUFFA and to donate food and clothing or to volunteer, please go to www.pl84u-alsuffa.org or phone 07539 364 110

Rider hazard With cycling increasing in popularity and the volume of traffic also rising, cyclists face greater risk of being injured on our roads. Like any other area of personal injury law, the key is to ascertain whether another party was at fault, either wholly or in part. This might be fairly simple if, for example, a cyclist is knocked off their bike by a car which failed to stop at a red light. It’s important to start any claim as quickly as possible. Although court proceedings must be started within three years of an incident, the sooner you contact a solicitor the better. Your memory, and that of any witnesses to the accident, will be clearer. There also needs to be evidence of injury. If you are injured, it’s vital to be assessed by a medical professional. If you did not attend Accident and Emergency, you should, as a minimum, make a swift appointment with your own GP. For advice on all Personal Injury matters please contact Wiseman Lee on 020 8215 1000.

Definition: things that are strange; queer; odd; uncommon; unusual; distinctive in nature or character from others; characteristic of; belonging exclusively to an area. Architectural historian, Karen Averby seeks out such things from this corner of London’s rich and varied past
The perfect way to cool off Waltham Forest was once home to two of the country’s leading outdoor pools, with Chingford’s Larkswood Lido smashing the UK record for lido visitors in a single day in 1976.
Opening of the new lido at Whipps Cross 1932.
Now that the long--awaited sunshine-filled days and soaring temperatures are here, the idea of cooling down by taking a dip in a local outdoor public pool is but a dream. Not so very long ago the borough had two such pools where local residents flocked in the summer months: Whipps Cross Lido, to the north of Hollow Ponds in grassland by Whipps Cross Roundabout, and the other at Larkshall, New Road in Chingford. The Whipps Cross Lido began life in 1905 as an artificial bathing pool supplied by natural springs, dug out at the same time as Hollow Ponds by a team of local unemployed men. The pool was immediately popular as a place to swim, but suffered from a copious and unpleasant mud and silt build-up. It was redeveloped in 1932, and in 1937 Walthamstow and Leyton Borough Councils transformed it into a state-of-the-art lido. It was roughly oval in shape with an additional small stretch for racing lanes, as well as a twenty foot-high diving board, and a paddling area. With over a 1,300,000 gallon capacity, it was one of the largest in the country at the time, and in the summer months it attracted hundreds of swimmers every day from east London and Essex. It was Chingford’s Larkswood Lido, however, which was the country’s first open air lido, opened just a year before that at Whipps
Cross, by the Minister of Health, Sir Kingsley Wood. Unusually the Larkswood pool had a cruciform design, as well as the usual slides and diving boards. There was also a shop selling tea and ice creams and a popular grassy picnic area surrounding Chingford’s Larkswood Lido the pool itself. It was perennially popular, with a record 290,400 people visiting the pool in 1959, and it holds the record for the highest number of lido visitors in a single day, a whopping 17,000 during the summer of 1976. Larkswood was nationally famous as a venue for the weekly television series It’s a Knockout and also featured in a toothpaste advert in the 1960s.
However, despite continued popularity, both lidos ultimately proved too expensive to maintain. Whipps Cross closed in 1983 and was filled in, although with a careful eye, its location can still be detected today. Larkswood survived a little longer, closing towards the end of the decade, although in 1990 it was given a new lease of life as an indoor water fun park, Fantasea. Unfortunately, several serious accidents and increasing debts were factors which led to its untimely closure in 1992. The site remained derelict for almost a decade before Larkswood Leisure Centre was opened on the site in 2001, better known as Chingford Leisure Centre. Today’s residents of Waltham Forest have to travel outside of the Borough for outside pool action, but the heady days of the local lidos can be glimpsed through historic photographs at Vestry House Museumsome of which are online: http://borough photos.org/walthamforest archangelheritage.co.uk

Walthamstow Diary Between forest and marsh lies the glorious Stow. These are the tales and meanderings of a proud resident of E17 For the past few years we’ve been saying that it would be great to have a street party on our road. We’ve been saying it, but doing absolutely nothing about it. You know how it is, you have a great idea, get really excited about it, and then life just gets in the way. This year however, is different, we have done something about it, and finally Springfield Road is having a street party. It’s really thanks to Jon and Hannah at the top of our road that things got moving. They got hold of all the forms that we needed to fill in, submitted an application to the council so that we can close the road, and got the rest of us around to theirs for meetings. It’s been great fun so far, so I’m really so pleased they got us organised and kicked us all in to action. There is a perception about London that we all storm around with our heads down and don’t talk to our neighbours. My experience of Walthamstow has never been like that. We know most of our immediate neighbours and get on really well with them. But there are lots of other people on the road we don’t know. Working on the street party is putting us in to contact with lots more of the people we share Springfield Road with, and I really like that. And when the day of the street party arrives, we’ll meet even more of our fellow Springfield roaders. We are keeping things pretty small this year. Face painting, a bouncy castle, picnic, games and a DJ. Being honest though, what actually happens on the day probably doesn’t matter. What really matters, and why I’m so excited about this happening, is that the street party is a great way to bring us all together, and give us an opportunity to say hello to each other. Come rain or shine, I know we are going to have a great day on the 2nd July, and afterwards, I think our little street will be even friendlier than it is already. walthamstowdiary.com 34

Bought posh beer from @ClaptonCraftE17. Topped it up with R Whites lemonade. And @CuriosE17 what? #HipsterSacrilege According to the ghost sign on the old Chilli‘n’Spice [corner of First Ave] we used to have a Walthamstow Building Society! Bring it back, I say... in order to make us completely self sufficient - if we were ever to decide to break away from the Union and form our own republic that is!
Hr: I remember that Building Society. It was opposite the chemist with the spinning clock above its door. IV: It had a big premises where Willow House on Forest Road is now. Sharon Davies opened it JD: They had a branch in an estate agency in Francis Rd E10. I still have my old passbook! YB: Would our own currency be possible? ‘How much you say? A couple of Awesomes for margarita pizza? Splendid! AT: What is the new shop going to be? TB: It’s going to be a coffee and gelato place SD: Also there’ll be an indian breakfast place inside as well rA: Walthamstow Building Society’s 70s/80s slogan was apparently ‘Don’t Blow It - Stow It’. SG: Wow! That’s made my day - thanks! :D Walthamstow residents News
Idea for a TV show, based on the guessing of prices you have to do in Leytonstone B&M. Like Supermarket Sweep, but with very long @teninchwheels queues... Spotted on the counter at the Deli Cafe on orford road LoL! Do these mock complaint charges seem fair or anything you would add? rP: I see mini holland has gone right down the list since the elections! EM: I would charge a lot more for listening to complaints about Mini Holland, but could listen to complaints about Theresa May all day. DA: It’s not very current; where’s Michael Gove? SM: I get around it by giving them different names. Awful Day is Theresa May and Large Island is Mini Holland. DUP is mud pudding. Makes for an interesting conversation. I’ve given a few people aliases (I’ll tell you sometime lol) LH: Does this mean you can pay in advance and then have a good old rant? The day folk comes to town Tim Chipping tells the E List about what he (and we) hope will be the first of many Walthamstow Folk Festivals where he’s lined up some truly impressive names for our entertainment. Having a folk festival in Walthamstow has been a long held dream of mine, because I like going to folk festivals but I also like to sleep in my own bed. Because I write for fRoots magazine and have worked in various roles at the historic Sidmouth Folk Week I’m able to punch above my weight in terms of who I book to play. So, for the first, potentially annual, Walthamstow Folk Festival we’ve got BBC Radio 2 Folk Award winners Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker, who normally play venues far bigger than this one. We’ve also got multiple award nominees and end-of-year best-of winners Stick In The Wheel, with the added bonus that they’re based in E17. World renowned Gaelic singer and star of BBC4’s Transatlantic Sessions Kathleen MacInnes is coming all the way from Scotland, as is
BBC Young Folk Award winner and bagpipe genius Brìghde Chaimbeul. And from a small village in County Cork we have Nell Ní Chróinín, the youngest ever winner of the prestigious Corn Uí Riada sean nós singing competition. The other artists haven’t won any awards but they will soon. Especially Khiyo who play Bengali folk rock. They’re probably the best Bengali folk rock band in London.
of Walthamstow Folk Club tucked away in one of the corners, with their own musical guests, tune sessions and sing-a-rounds. And it all ends with a late-night ceilidh with music from an all-star band. Mirth is hosting a cider and cheese festival to coincide.
There’ll be free folk-based entertainment in Mirth throughout the day and night in addition to the ticketed concerts. Stroud’s all-female Boss Morris will be coming down to dance and show off their extraordinary beasts (not a euphemism). Alongside the Morris we’ll have rapper sword dancing too, which has to be seen to be believed. In addition there’ll be a pop-up version
