Edmund de Waal’s book The Hare with Amber Eyes is a compelling family history tracing the fortunes of his forebears, through a collection of 264 Japanese netsukes that were handed down through several generations of the Ephrussi family. The book is best described by Mr de Waal himself: “It is the biography of a collection and the biography of my family. It is the story of the ascent and decline of a Jewish dynasty, about loss and diaspora and about the survival of objects. The collection is of 264 Japanese netsuke. It is the common thread for the story of its three Jewish owners and the three rooms in which it was kept over a period of a hundred and forty years.” An Economist Book of the Year, The Sunday Times called it simply ‘a masterpiece’. The book is an international best-seller in 23 languages, with more than one million copies sold. Mr de Waal is also one of the world’s leading ceramic artists and has won several awards in the UK and Europe for his innovative creations. He is also a Trustee of the Victoria and Albert Museum and a Senior Fellow of the Royal Academy. Ticket sales will support the Godolphin and Latymer Bursary Fund.
