The Curriculum We are required to let you know that the following information is available to you on our website – www.godolphinandlatymer.com. Should you wish to obtain a hard copy of any of these items, please contact the school office. • Policies and arrangements for admissions, discipline and exclusions • Behaviour Policy – including arrangements for discipline, rewards and sanctions • Curriculum Policy • Anti-bullying policy • Policy for health and safety on school visits, (Educational Visits and other off-site activities policy) • Academic performance in the previous school year i.e. 2011/2012 • Complaints Procedure (and the number of formal complaints received in the previous year). In addition, our Safeguarding (Child Protection) and Recruitment Policies are also available on our website. Hard copies of these are available from the school office.

Our approach to the curriculum The curriculum at Godolphin and Latymer aims to develop a love of learning in the girls, to motivate and enthuse them and to equip them with skills appropriate to the 21st century. Helping every girl to realise her academic potential is central to our ethos. We all live as members of various communities throughout our lives and it is essential therefore that our approach helps girls to develop personal and social responsibility. The extensive range of curriculum-related visits encourages the girls to broaden their awareness of the world around them. Fundamental to our approach is helping our girls to develop strong problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to think both critically and creatively. 2

The curriculum does not exist in isolation, of course. Its content and approach are complemented by the extensive co-curricular programme offered by the school which provides girls with the opportunity to develop further skills and talents.

Lower School (Years 7,8 and 9) During the first three years girls study Philosophy and Religion, English, two Modern Languages from a choice of French, German and Spanish, Latin, History, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Food Technology, Design Technology, Art, Music, Drama and Physical Education. In Year 10 Italian, Russian, Greek and Classical Civilisation become available. During Year 9, girls in consultation with the teaching staff select the subjects they wish to study over the next two years for their GCSEs.

Middle School (Years 10 and 11) Girls normally take ten subjects to GCSE /IGCSE. English, English Literature, Mathematics, Science and at least one Modern Foreign Language are in the Core Curriculum (all girls take Triple Award Science giving them three separate qualifications in Biology, Chemistry and Physics). In addition, girls may choose three further options from the following subjects. Classical Civilisation German Latin Spanish Greek Italian Religious Studies Russian Geography Art History Music French Food Technology Physical Education Drama Design Technology: Resistant Materials

Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13)

Special Needs / Study Support

In the Sixth Form there is a choice of curriculum between the Advanced Level (AS and A2) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma. All subjects offered to GCSE (with the exception of PE, and Technology) can be continued into the Sixth Form with the addition of Ancient History, Economics, Government and Politics and History of Art. All sixth formers follow courses designed to develop skills of independent learning and research. For girls following the A Level route, the Extended Project Qualification is available. Those taking the IB produce an Extended Essay.

The school is committed to meeting the individual needs of every pupil. There is an Individual Learning Co-ordinator, with a specialist qualification in teaching pupils with specific learning differences, who liaises closely with subject teachers to ensure that appropriate support is offered where needed.

Higher Education and Careers Advice Advice is available to girls throughout the school but especially for girls in Year 9 (UIV) upwards in order to help them to choose their subjects at GCSE and in the Sixth Form. A considerable amount of time is devoted to helping girls prepare for university / higher education in the UK, Europe and the USA in Years 12 and 13.

National Curriuclum It is our policy to teach all subjects in the National Curriculum but to offer other subjects in addition where appropriate. N.B. These notes are a brief guide to the curriculum at The Godolphin and Latymer School and may be subject to modification and change.

Work experience is undertaken by girls in Year 11 after their GCSE examinations. A programme of European work experience in France and Germany is offered to sixth form girls.

Personal Social and Health Education Guidance is offered on health matters, personal confidence and self-esteem. Girls are encouraged to have respect for themselves and others and to develop a responsible attitude to those close to them, in their local community and the wider world.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Results Summer 2012 The IB Diploma was taken by 25 candidates who achieved outstanding success this year. In 2010, one of our girls achieved the perfect score of 45 points, in 2011 two girls achieved this and this year, 2012, we were delighted that again two girls gained the maximum score, a standard attained by less than 1% of students worldwide. The IB Diploma involves studying six subjects over two years, three of these subjects at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. Each subject is worth seven points and there are up to three

additional core points available for the combined marks of the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge. The average diploma score for our school this year was 39.5 points. Fourteen girls scored 39 points or more with thirteen of these scoring over 40 points. In the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge, 21 girls achieved at least 2 core points and 21 of the Extended Essays were graded A or B. 5
