Justine Hong Age 12 Nanyang Primary School I was nine years old when I wrote this story. I got my inspiration from a worksheet given to us during the Young Author Scheme. It had a picture of a dragon and descriptive words, one of which was ‘timid’. I was born in the Year of the Golden Dragon and I think dragons are such interesting and mystical creatures. Dragons in stories also appear fiery, strong and ferocious. The word ‘timid’ is not usually used to describe a dragon, so I thought that a timid dragon would make an interesting story to write. I like reading mainly fantasy books. My favourite authors are C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. They are two of the best fantasy authors of all time and I love their books. They describe their worlds so vividly with such imagination and inspire me as a writer. If I could be in any fantasy land of my making, I would be in a land where magic and dragons were real. It would be a safe and fun place for all, humans and creatures, to live in. People would have magic powers and everyone would be unique.

Curry, the Timid Dragon By Justine Hong

eeeaaaah!” Curry screeched, running around in circles. “Bug! There’s a bug!” “Don’t be silly,” exclaimed Chilli, Curry’s brother, exasperated. “It’s just a bug! We’re 100,000 times bigger than it. And we’re dragons! DRAGONS! We’re known to be fierce and tough.” “Well…” Curry trailed off as he watched the little green bug get squashed and squished by Chilli. It was a bright and sunny morning and Curry, Chilli, along with their friends Flare and Goldrock were playing hide-and-seek. Curry was a timid dragon who could not breathe fire. Even if he tried his hardest, he just could not do it. Since he could not breathe fire, Curry felt as if he were a failure. “What sort of dragon am I if I can’t even breathe fire?” he thought, ashamedly. Even toddler dragons could puff smoke! He felt useless, and other dragons making fun of him because of this did not help. He soon became afraid of everything and anything. His brother Chilli, however, was the complete opposite, even though they were twins. Chilli was very brave and daring, and was a powerful 11

fire-breather. Flare and Goldrock were their friends. Flare was a funny dragon and always made his friends laugh. Goldrock’s real name was Blazer, but he was very steadfast and firm, so he earned his nickname after Mount Goldrock. Curry, along with his brother and friends lived in Dragon Valley, which was home to all the dragons in the kingdom. Dragon Valley was a beautiful place with lush greenery, multihued flowers and sparkling waterfalls. It was ruled by the Dragon King. Curry had never met the King or been to the Dragon Palace, until one fateful day when everything changed.

Glancing around, Curry saw a big blue dragon flying towards them. “It’s a dragon messenger,” Flare murmured as they watched the dragon land beside them. “I wonder what he wants.” “Hello!” he said. “His Majesty, the King, wants to see you all.” “Us?” Chilli replied, puzzled. The dragon nodded. The gang gave each other quizzical looks as they were led to the Dragon Palace. A few minutes later, they arrived at their destination. The Dragon Palace was made of gold and shone brightly in the sun. Different coloured jewels surrounded the turrets. Inside, a throne made of gold with a ruby dragon statue mounted at the top stood majestically behind the entrance. The Dragon King sat on the throne. He was a huge silver dragon with wide, scaly wings. Beside him stood the Ancient, or the Elder of the Dragons as he was known. He was white and over a century old, and he looked wizened. He was staring intently into a large, transparent crystal ball. Many dragons were also gathered at the hall. “Good morning, your Majesty,” all the dragons hailed the king as they bowed before him. “Good morning, my dear subjects,” replied the Dragon King, in a gravelly voice. “I have something of great importance to tell you…”
