MAXIMIZING OIL RESOURCES AND PRODUCTION WITH MSR What You Should Know: Shrinking global supplies of light crude oil are leading to greater dependence on heavy oils, tar sands, and oil shale. The US has ample heavy oil and oil shale resources, but converting these resources into liquid fuels is expensive, energy intensive, and environmentally problematic. Strategic use of Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) technology lets the United States extract the greatest value from its natural resources. Using MSRs to power heavy oil development would drop carbon emissions produced from oil sands and shale production to virtually zero. MSRs can economically and safely produce the high temperature heat needed to recover shale oil and heavy oil. MSR use potentially reduces the cost of producing premium crude from shale to less than $20 per barrel (heat costs of only $5 to $7 per barrel of oil.) MSR technology for the recovery of shale oil is potentially applicable to depleted oil fields, tar sands, soft coal, and other hydrocarbon deposits. Oil refineries can use high energy heat generated by MSRs to increase efficiency and lower costs. Carbon-‐free, cost-‐effective on-‐site energy generated by MSRs can potentially transform the oil sector, creating new opportunities for industry expansion, leading to true energy independence.
