EVERY YEAR EAA AirVenture Oshkosh gets bigger and better, and the highlights for 2018 are sure to keep the momentum going. New Grounds Access Rules in Force Today AS FINAL AIRVENTURE prep work continues to take place around the grounds, several new access policies are in effect through today to improve safety, security, and mobility. The new procedures have been in effect since Thursday, July 19. Grounds Access: Entry will be allowed to credentialed vehicles ONLY through Gates 33 (Waukau Avenue) and 26 (Knapp Street Road/Theater in the Woods). Other vehicle gates will be closed. Non-credentialed vehicles are NOT allowed on the grounds, the same as during AirVenture week. Personal golf carts, scooters, bicycles, and other such vehicles are also prohibited. The restricted area (shown on the map) will be enforced to ensure safety for everyone involved as AirVenture preparation is underway. Exhibitors and vendors within the restricted area will receive special preevent lanyard credentials. While early AirVenture attendees are asked to avoid entering the restricted area. Noncredentialed volunteers will be allowed onto the grounds ONLY to pick up credential packets from their chairmen. EAA security will be present in the restricted area. Non-credentialed vehicles will be turned away or asked to leave. Exhibit Hangar Access: There will be strict enforcement of access to Exhibit Hangars A-D. Only credentialed exhibitors and vendors are allowed during open hours from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. today. Aviation Gateway Park Access: There will be strict enforcement of access to Aviation Gateway Park exhibit facilities

such as the Innovation Showcase, UAV Showcase, and Education and Career Center. Access is limited to credentialed exhibitors and vendors, and only between the hours of 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. At 6 p.m. sharp, doors will be locked. Outdoor Exhibit Access: Outdoor exhibits are not open until Monday, July 23. Visitors on the grounds before that time are asked to give space to allow exhibitors to finish setting up their areas and to exercise caution anywhere around the outdoor exhibit areas due to the

presence of equipment used to prepare the areas for the fun hustle and bustle of AirVenture. Thank you for your cooperation! This is a new policy this year, one undertaken with safety foremost in mind. There is a tremendous amount of work that must be completed in the final days before AirVenture opens, and we want to give our staff, volunteers, exhibitors, and vendors every opportunity to safely and effectively prepare for the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration.

AIRVENTURE 2018 HOMEBUILT PATCH HONORS VAN’S AIRCRAFT PHOTO BY SCOTT SLOCUM

2018 is the Year of the Tanker, and will feature a number of military refueling aircraft, including a KC-10, KC-135, F/A-18F Super Hornet, and HC-130P/N. Kicking off the night air show on Wednesday, a KC-135 will refuel a B-1B 20,000 feet above the EAA grounds. Fans of modern military air power will have even more to be excited about, as nearly every airframe in the current U.S. Air Force inventory will either fly or be on static display throughout AirVenture 2018. Continuing the military theme, EAA is also celebrating 100 years since the end of World War I and 100 years of the Royal Air Force. WWI activities will primarily take place in the Vintage area, and a number of historical aircraft will be on display, including a newly restored Dayton-Wright DH.4 Liberty biplane and a rare 1915 Blériot replica in Royal Flying Corps colors. A special program devoted to the RAF centennial will take place on Monday evening at Theater in the Woods. AirVenture attendees will also witness the Oshkosh debut of the innovative Yak-110, which was built by joining two Yak-55s and hanging a jet engine from the center wing. The Yak-110 will perform an aerobatic routine in the afternoon air shows on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Tuesday’s Innovations Day will showcase the latest developments in aviation technology and will give AirVenture attendees a glimpse into the future of flying. Innovations Day will kick off with the Lindbergh Innovation Forum from 9 a.m. to noon at Aviation Gateway Park’s Forums Center, followed by the

Innovation Trends in GA Avionics: Executive Roundtable at 1 p.m. On Tuesday evening, watch five teams present their solutions for in-flight loss of control at An Evening With Innovators - The Founder’s Innovation Prize, presented by Airbus, at Theater in the Woods starting at 8 p.m. The winner of the Shark Tank-style competition will receive a cash prize of $25,000. Multiple skydiving teams drop in during the afternoon and evening air shows on Wednesday, celebrating a segment of aviation that has been less prevalent at AirVenture in the past. As always, the Patriot Parachute Team will open the air shows, displaying the American flag as they descend during the national anthem. In addition, the International Skydiving Museum Eagles, with its more than 100 jumpers, the wingsuit-clad Red Bull Air Force, and Vertical Elite, who will put on a glowing night routine with skeletal LED visuals, will all perform on Wednesday. Twilight Flight Fest will return to the Fun Fly Zone on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday evening for its second year after a stellar 2017 debut. The lineup includes a short takeoff and landing (STOL) competition, powered paragliding, skydiving, and 3D RC aircraft and helicopter demonstrations. 2018 Volunteers of the Year Announced BY SAM OLESON

THE 2018 EAA Volunteers of the Year have been announced and this year’s crop of winners represents many of the values that EAA holds important. There are four 2018 Volunteers of the Year Award recipients: Dr. John “Jack” Hastings, Donna Sisk, and Ken and Linda Jordan. Jack, EAA 451228, was an institution on EAA’s Aeromedical Advisory Council from 1994 to 2016, helping countless pilots get their FAA medical certificates, and was key in guiding EAA’s efforts to make the medical policy more pilot-friendly. In 2013, the FAA released its Conditions an AME Can Issue (CACI) program, which covers 18 conditions from hypertension to breast cancer and empowers doctors to issue on-the-spot approvals for certain conditions, dramatically decreasing the time many pilots spend in the certification process. Jack was heavily involved in this program and was recognized by the

federal air surgeon when CACI was rolled out. He was also instrumental in EAA’s efforts to roll back an overreaching sleep apnea screening policy by the FAA. Additionally, through EAA’s Pilot Advocate program, Jack helped organize and guide a group of more than 100 aviation medical examiners

(AMEs) to provide personal service to EAA members. Donna, EAA Lifetime 68843, has been volunteering with EAA for 48 years, most of which has been spent as the chairman of the South Maintenance Support Group. Donna’s duties have included the coordination of volunteers

to get much of the behind-the-scenes work done prior to, during, and after EAA AirVenture Oshkosh each year. Donna oversees and coordinates 50 to 75 volunteers and projects, ensuring jobs are done correctly and on time. She was the 2010 recipient of the Dorothy Hilbert Award, which is awarded to a female volunteer who exhibits passion, dedication, and devotion for volunteerism. Ken, EAA 481552, and Linda, EAA 481553, volunteer in the North 40 area, and are known for their collaboration to make continuous improvements to the areas they touch. Both are members of EAA Chapter 74 in Orlando, Florida, and Ken is currently the chapter’s Young Eagles coordinator and has flown close to 1,400 Young Eagles.

SINCE SHE BEGAN volunteering with EAA in the early 1990s, Jackie Welch has helped grow the EAA Flight Experiences program during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh into a can’t-miss attraction. Jackie, EAA Lifetime 856583, is the 2018 Dorothy Hilbert Award recipient, which is given to a female volunteer who exhibits the passion, dedication, and devotion for volunteerism that Dorothy presented throughout her life and time spent at EAA AirVenture. “I was shocked. I had no concept at all that I might be considered for this award,” Jackie said. “I’m so honored to be

associated with EAA. Volunteering with EAA has been one of the few things in life that’s given me instant gratification.” Jackie started volunteering with EAA in 1993 and has been instrumental in ramping up and growing the EAA Flight Experiences program for EAA’s Ford TriMotors. She’s helped coordinate hundreds of tour stops, led dozens of volunteers, and delivered outstanding customer and member service to thousands of Tri-Motor passengers from coast to coast. Jackie and her husband, Cody, also received EAA’s President’s Award in 2003.

In addition to her Tri-Motor tour work, Jackie has also helped recruit many new volunteers to the program. Her sales pitch is pretty simple. “I always tell people that volunteering with EAA is fantastic and the greatest experience you can have,” she said. “If you ask most volunteers, that’s what they’ll tell you.” Jackie will officially receive the Dorothy Hilbert Award today at 3 p.m. in the Volunteer Park. “I’m absolutely thrilled and humbled,” she said.” I’ve always felt that being an EAA volunteer is among the highest of honors.”

EAA Welcome Center Your Go-To Place for Participation EAA’S MISSION OF growing participation in aviation comes alive at the EAA Four Corners, home to the EAA AirVenture Welcome Center, the One Week Wonder build, the EAA Pilot Proficiency Center (PPC), and the EAA Member Center. The EAA AirVenture Welcome Center is the go-to place for attendees to find out what’s happening around the AirVenture grounds this week. The One Week Wonder is back in 2018 after more than 2,500 Oshkosh attendees successfully constructed a Zenith CH 750 in just seven days during AirVenture 2014. The 2018 airplane will be a Van’s RV-12iS as part of the Van’s Aircraft celebration of the company’s 10,000th flying RV. AIRCRAFT GREETERS ENTER 40TH YEAR OF WELCOMING, ASSISTING OSHKOSH ATTENDEES BY TI WINDISCH

EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the aircraft greeter volunteer team that welcomes pilots to Oshkosh and provides several essential services to anybody who flies in and parks in the North 40 or the Homebuilts area. Dennis Spivey, EAA 558867, is the volunteer chairman of the aircraft greeter team and has volunteered with the program for 17 years total. Dennis has served as a greeter, co-chairman, vice-chairman, and finally in his current role as chairman. “As the planes come in and they cut their engines and park, we take over and greet them and ask them if it’s their first time here,” Dennis said. “Then we go through a checklist with them, we make sure their master switch is off, that they

didn’t have any jarring that could’ve set off their emergency transmitter, if they have tiedowns — they’re supposed to bring them, but sometimes they forget.” Dennis said in addition to saying hello, aircraft greeters end up answering

a lot of questions and serve as a first point of contact for folks who fly into Oshkosh. They also provide them with an AirVenture essential: directions. “We have maps that we pull out,” Dennis said. “We show them where

they’re at. We give them a handout with phone numbers on it and their frequencies and everything like that. They probably know them anyway, but just in case. And we write their road number on it — when they get back, there’s going to be 300 more planes out here.” There is a lot to keep track of and plenty to do for aircraft greeters, but Dennis said he and the dedicated team of volunteers with him also enjoy introducing new faces to AirVenture. “We have a lot of fun,” Dennis said. “Some of [the pilots] want to relax a little bit, because it’s stressful trying to land with four airplanes at a time. We try to calm them down a little bit, just joke about a few things and get them going, help them to have a good start to the program.”

Volunteers Make AirVenture Unforgettable More than 5,500 individuals keep convention running smoothly BY LAURA BECK

AS HUNDREDS OF thousands of people descend on EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018, an army of volunteers keeps the event running smoothly. More than 5,500 volunteers are already tackling hundreds of tasks to make the convention an unforgettable experience for all. These unpaid helpers do tasks such as checking in campers, parking planes and cars, manning welcome stations, driving trams, making food for other volunteers, and flightline operation duties. “I’m impressed with EAA and just want to be a part of it,’” said David Reist, EAA 1192621, who signed up for two six-hour stints as a tram driver this year. David owns a farm in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and can drive a tractor so he thought this was a way he could help at his first Oshkosh convention. This is exactly what Willow, Alaska, native Judy Knight, chairman of the Camp Scholler Volunteer Center, hopes will happen. She said she tries to match a person’s skills with volunteer roles that need filling

and that it is satisfying to find people a “home” on the AirVenture grounds. Judy has been organizing volunteers at Oshkosh since 2013. Her husband, Don, helps her at the center, which is tucked away under a grove of trees near the Red Barn on the edge of Camp Scholler. Judy has been coming to Oshkosh for 23 years and has volunteered each of those years. A volunteer board is posted outside of the center and is updated daily. People can pop in and tell Judy or another volunteer at the center what they want to do and when they are available. Judy keeps track of all the hours each volunteer works with their name, time, date, and where they worked. Someone the volunteer worked for must verify each sheet. “They always seem to show up right when they are needed,” Judy said of volunteers.

EAA STRIVES TO improve AirVenture at every turn, and as a result, a host of improvements have been made to the Oshkosh grounds since EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017. The food area has been moved to better accommodate traffic flow and easier access to vendors are two new AirVenture 2018 improvements. The Tailwind Café in the Homebuilts area received a concrete foundation and tent for last year’s convention, which made it a popular spot. It’s now even nicer, according to EAA Director of Facilities Steve Taylor. “This year we put in a pavilion over that to create a nice area for people to gather within the homebuilt community, to sit down and watch the activities,” Steve said. The Vintage area has been updated, too, with Charlie’s Park opening on Monday. Charlie’s Park was named in honor of Charlie Harris, a longtime Vintage Aircraft Association member who served in several capacities during his lifetime. “It’s a park-like setting behind the Homebuilt Hangar in honor of Charlie

Harris, enhancing the area and adding some nice new landscaping in order to make it more of that welcoming attraction to the attendee,” Steve said. The Warbirds area is now home to a new Quonset-style hut, which will be the Warbirds Youth Center. It will house several of the flight-training simulators formerly located in a Warbirds area tent. The building near the tower that formerly housed the sweepstakes is now supporting the Oshkosh Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Wisconsin Department of Tourism. The sweepstakes can now be found in the EAA Member Center located in the Four Corners. Other grounds additions include enhancements to the North 40 convenience store, a well to provide additional water for attendees plus another shower trailer on the south end, a new road in Camp Scholler to improve accessibility, and 117 new electrical campsites. “Last year we sold out the Wednesday prior to the show. We see the demand there,” Steve said. “We strategically decided to go with approximately 120 sites.” Some other smaller updates and modifications were made as well, so keep your eyes peeled this week. EAA is working to provide AirVenture attendees the best possible experience during their stay in Oshkosh.

THE 1/3-SCALE B-17 Obsession, known best as the Bally Bomber, arrived in Oshkosh on July 19 in advance of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 and will be on display both on Boeing Plaza and in the Replica Fighters Association area for most of the week. Built by Jack Bally, EAA 348338, the Bally Bomber took 17 years and 40,000 man-hours to get into the air and eventually to Oshkosh. A scaled-down B-17 Flying Fortress is obviously going to be a unique attention-grabber, but Richard pointed out that any homebuilt with four engines is pretty rare in its own right.

Flying the Bally Bomber isn’t the easiest thing to do, but it’s not an insurmountable challenge for Richard, who enjoyed doing passes on his way into AirVenture. “This is just a lot of fun,” Richard said. “It’s a challenge, a big challenge. It’s underpowered a little bit but it flies. It’s between fair and good on flight characteristics. But what do you expect, it is what it is.” An easel with information about the B-17 replica stands proudly in front of the aircraft during the day, but Richard is well-aware that he and Jack will be called on to offer much more information. That’s no problem — Richard said they can alternate exploring the grounds and remaining on post by the Bally Bomber. Jim Schmitt, EAA 212579, was one of the first attendees with questions for Richard about the dutiful replica. Jim flew his Pulsar into Oshkosh on Thursday and made his way over to the Bally Bomber the next day. He said his first reaction was that it is a “cute” little bomber, and all the work that went into it for nearly two decades is apparent. Even though it’s far different from anything else at the convention, Jim said the Bally Bomber embodies what he loves about Oshkosh: One-off aircraft that you really cannot find anywhere else. “I like seeing stuff that’s different,” Jim said. “That’s why I come to Oshkosh; there’s always things like this that are different, that are one-offs that you’ve never seen before. That’s what you come to Oshkosh for, are these things right here.”

Richard said flying the airplane into Wittman Regional Airport was a special moment for him, despite his long career in aviation. “I’ve been flying for 60 years,” Richard said. “I’ve been an aircraft mechanic, flight instructor, I teach flying. … It’s the highlight of my career.”

IT’S SAID THAT the early bird gets the worm, and a group of Cherokee owners know that best. So, when the Oshkosh area forecast called for rain and cloudy skies on Saturday, the Cherokees to Oshkosh group, or CtO for short, decided to depart a little earlier than originally planned, and taxied in to the North 40 at about 10 a.m., an hour before their scheduled arrival. The next group scheduled to arrive, the Mooneys, decided to play it safe

and stay in Madison, Wisconsin, until the weather cleared. And at press time, the Cessna group was still in Juneau, Wisconsin, hoping to arrive early evening, if the weather cleared as forecast. The Bonanzas, by far the largest group arriving en masse, almost made it to Oshkosh before weather caused them to divert and land in Fond du Lac at about 1:15 p.m. An hour later, they were making arrangements to complete their flight and land in Oshkosh, which they did at 4:30 p.m.

Bonanzas to Oshkosh (B2Osh) leader Larry Gaines said that 149 airplanes made the initial flight, and everyone was safely on the ground in Fond du Lac. Although they didn’t make it to Oshkosh on the first try, the group still easily surpassed their record set in 1995. “We hold the official NAA World Record for largest formation of civilian aircraft of 132,” he said. “We didn’t arrange for sanction of a new World Record, but we obviously beat that record handily.” 2018 marked the 29th annual trek to Oshkosh from Rockford, Illinois, for the B2Osh group. The Cherokees to Oshkosh group, or CtO, flew into Wittman Regional Airport from Waupaca, Wisconsin, at about 1,800 feet Saturday morning. “The only issue was our concern that we get here before the ceiling dropped,” said lead pilot Tony Harding, of Wadsworth, Ohio, who led the group of 29 airplanes and approximately 60 people on the flight.

This was the second year that Harding led the group, and his eighth year of joining CtO. However, it is the ninth year that the group has arrived together. “The first year was SplashKosh,” he said. “We staged at Waupaca and stayed there for a week because of all the water on the grounds here.” Safety is always the primary concern for the group, which holds clinics throughout the year. But this week is the only opportunity to practice their mass arrivals with the entire group. They spent the previous four days doing training flights, Harding said. This is the ninth year that Ed and Dori LeBlanc, of Austin, Texas, have arrived with the group. ” It’s a great chance to get together with friends who feel like your family,” Ed said. “We are all about safety and camaraderie.” Harding agreed. “We’ve grown to be a very big family.”

South Africans Set AirVenture Attendance Record BY JAMES WYNBRANDT

WITH THEIR VIBRANT encampment at Camp Scholler, South Africans have long been among the most visible international visitors at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, and this year the contingent is almost impossible to miss: They’ve arrived with their largest group ever. “Last year we set a record: 163 [people],” said Neil Bowden, EAA 565560, who organized the annual AirVenture travel packages from South Africa since the first in 1997. “This year we have 237.” Beyond South Africans’ longstanding love of aviation, Neil points to the country’s GA-friendly policies to explain the popularity of the annual migration. “There aren’t a load of restrictions [on flying], and our homebuilding rules fall under air club control,” said Neil, who is also a member of EAA Chapter 322 in Johannesburg. For those building aircraft, AirVenture represents a major opportunity to compare and select avionics, engines, and other gear for their projects.

A lucky few in the group make the final leg of their journey aboard a DC-3 from Kenosha and “fly into Oshkosh and get here the proper way,” according to Neil. Two such flights of 16 passengers each were arranged for AirVenture 2018. The South Africans established their permanent Camp Scholler location (at Lindbergh and 40th) in 2003, becoming the first group with a permanent structure on their site: a small shed for camping equipment and other essentials. “It’s difficult for guys coming from South Africa,” Neil said. “You can’t bring an RV [recreational vehicle — not the aircraft], so if we’ve got the equipment stored; it’s a whole lot more comfortable for a week’s stay.”

The South Africans’ camp is also known as a convivial — if not boisterous — gathering spot, but Neil said that’s something of a misperception. “For a while we brought an entertainer to the airfield and we had quite noisy parties in the campsite,” he said. “[But] it was mainly local people.” Neil added that the South Africans were too jet lagged and exhausted from roaming the grounds to party and “were getting the blame and it wasn’t really us.” The parties with live entertainment stopped about three years ago, and now you’ll find more socializing — along with their customary warm welcome — than revelry after hours. This year the South Africans are looking forward especially to activities honoring the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force, and seeing on static display a Sling 4, designed by hometown hero Mike Blyth and manufactured by South Africa’s Airplane Factory. Neil said he’ll be off exploring new territory at AirVenture. “I’ve been coming here 22 years, and there are still places I haven’t gotten to on the airfield,” he said. If you’re planning to camp at AirVenture, Neil offers two pieces of advice: Get a good, stormproof tent (“dome tents are the best”), and get here early (“otherwise you’re going to be a long way from the entrance gate”). And whether you’re camping or not, if you want to know anything about aviation in South Africa, Neil said, “Come and talk to the guys,” at their home away from home right here at the fly-in.

SUREFLY TO MAKE FIRST PUBLIC FLIGHT TUESDAY BY JAMES WYNBRANDT

SUREFLY, THE NEXT-GENERATION, indevelopment personal multicopter that debuted on display at the fly-in last year, will make its first public flight on the Oshkosh flightline Tuesday afternoon. Steve Burns, CEO of Workhorse Group, which is creating SureFly, called the upcoming milestone display, “More of a demo hover than demo flight.” Burns added, “Balancing to hover is the hardest thing to do,” for the aircraft — and the largest hurdle on the road to its commercial development. Made of lightweight carbon fiber, the SureFly airframe weighs less than 300 pounds. Four arms extending outward above the cabin of the two-place aircraft each contain two motors (eight in total) driving counter-rotating propellers. Unlike a helicopter, Burns said the SureFly is simple and easy to operate. For forward motion, power to the rearward

motors is simply increased, eliminating the need for a complicated transition from vertical to horizontal motion, as tilt rotors require. The hybrid-powered aircraft uses both fossil fuel and battery-supplied electricity. An engine drives two generators in parallel that power the electric motors turning the propellers, while the battery provides the power needed for the rapid changes to the motors’ rpm required to keep the craft balanced. In the event of a failure of the gas engine, a lithium-ion battery provides sufficient power for a safe landing from 4,000 feet or lower. There’s also a ballistic recovery chute as further backup. Workhorse, a publicly traded company, makes electric delivery trucks, and had no experience in aviation prior to this project. The FAA has already accepted the company’s type certificate

application for SureFly, which will be produced in piston- and turbine-engine variants. Here in Oshkosh, the company

is taking $1,000 deposits for the piston version, which will be priced around $200,000, Burns said.

EAA SWEEPSTAKES CUB READY FOR NEW OWNER BY MEGAN ESAU

A 1941 PIPER J-3C-65 Cub fresh from the restoration floor will go to the lucky winner of the 2018 EAA Sweepstakes airplane giveaway. With a zero-time Continental A65-8 engine, new Grove disc brakes, a new Sensenich wooden propeller, Poly Fiber covering system, and the traditional Lock Haven yellow with black trim paint scheme, this Cub looks even better than it did when it rolled out of the factory in January 1941. Two young men, John Dacy and Joe Perenchio, scooped up NC35303 right away in early 1941 and flew it as their pride and joy throughout the summer and fall seasons of that year. Then, when the United States entered World War II that December, John received a telegram from the War Department to separate the engine from the airframe and store both in separate locations.

After the war, John’s family continued to fly the Cub and owned it for 51 years until 1996. It changed hands a few times before ultimately finding its way to airplane restorer Don Wade, EAA Lifetime 1118917, in Alabama. His shop, C&D Aviation, specializes in breathing new life into forgotten vintage aircraft. Shortly after starting the restoration, Don also acquired an engine

repair shop called Don’s Dream Machines from Don Swords, EAA 475841, who was equally excited about the Cub’s restoration. “It’s trying to make an airplane that is period correct, trying to bring back something that was found behind a barn that was left for dead, and you can bring it back to life,” Wade said. “This airplane here is really the culmination of that.”

Wade said all new parts were used in rebuilding NC35303, and he stepped back to 1941 to make sure every nut, bolt, and washer looked just as it would have back then. He meticulously covered and re-covered the airplane until the job was flawless. The result is an impeccable restoration. “My hopes and dreams for the next caretaker of this airplane is that they’ll love and cherish it, they’ll take extremely good care of it, and in 51 years after they’ve had their children and grandchildren have the opportunity to fly in it, they’ll bring it to a shop to do a restoration on it and continue it on,” Wade said. “That’s what I hope.” Sweepstakes entries can be filled out and submitted at the Sweepstakes area, which has a new location just outside the EAA Member Center, or via www.EAA. org/sweepstakes.

THE WARBIRDS ADVENTURE Tram Tour is back and bigger than ever during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018, thanks to a new home in a larger tent in the Warbirds area. The tram tour is narrated and carries attendees through the entire Warbirds area while guides explain the history behind the aircraft on display in the various zones. The new tent measures 20 feet by 50 feet and is adorned with four big American flags proudly waving 15 feet in the air. The tent, known as Command HQ, is split into three areas for a cleaner flow through the tram tour experience, according to Warbirds Marketing Director Vic Krause, EAA 292930. “We’ve made substantial improvements to the physical footprint of the attraction,” Vic said. “By going to this larger accommodation we’ve eliminated the vertical poles. It’s all a free-span open space, which gives us a lot more flexibility in the layout.” The tent is divided into three bays: a registration area for when attendees first arrive, a briefing location to prepare them for the tour, and a multifunctional area home to complimentary goodie bags, Warbirds of America membership

representatives, and prizes and awards that will be given out daily to new Warbirds of America members. In addition, the scavenger hunt program that became a hit last year is back and also improved. The scavenger sheet has six warbird silhouettes on each side. Scavenger hunt participants who find and get autographs from pilots or flight crews of each corresponding warbird for one complete side get a swag bag filled with warbird stickers and decals. THE AIRBUS FLY-IN Theater, a popular nightly destination for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh attendees, has a lineup stacked with compelling aviation films and knowledgeable and interesting presenters nightly, Sunday through Saturday. Found adjacent to Camp Scholler, the Fly-In Theater shows movies at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; and at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Saturday. Nothing by Chance kicks off this year’s Fly-In Theater lineup tonight. This classic documentary focuses on barnstorming and premiered in 1975. Monday night brings the world premiere of Spitfire, a film about a Spitfire pilot from the Air Transport Auxiliary and her granddaughter. Next up on Tuesday is Dunkirk, a dramatic re-telling of the famous Battle of Britain. Catch-22 is the Fly-In Theater’s featured film on Wednesday, as moviegoers can watch the classic movie adaptation of Joseph Heller’s novel of the same name. Thursday brings Toward the Unknown, a movie about the dawn of supersonic flight filmed on location at Edwards Air Force Base. Friday contains a little extra for the movie-goers, as the Escadrille trailer, a segment of Sopwith, and The Great Waldo Pepper will all be shown. AS PART OF the organization’s 100th anniversary celebration, the NFL’s Green Bay Packers will be exhibiting at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 throughout the week. Lambeau Field Live, presented by Associated Bank, is the Packers’ interactive exhibit and will feature a variety of attractions for visitors. The organization has one interesting connection to aviation: it was the first team in the NFL to travel to a game by airplane. In 1940, the Packers, coached by Curly Lambeau, traveled to a game in New York via two Douglas DC-3s, flying out of Chicago after taking the train to the airport from Green Bay. When the DC-3s stopped in Cleveland to refuel midway through the flight, the decision was made to take the train the rest of the way to New York due to some poor weather over the city at the time. The Packers lost that weekend’s game to the New York Giants, but had made history, even if it was a challenge. VAN’S CELEBRATES 10,000-PLUS AIRCRAFT BUILT AND FLYING BY TI WINDISCH

VAN’S AIRCRAFT’S PRESENCE can be found throughout general aviation, and EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 is no exception as Van’s celebrates more than 10,000 RVs built and flying. In addition to the Van’s Aircraft booth found in the Homebuilts area and the various RVs found all over Oshkosh, Van’s impact can be felt across the grounds. A special parking group including several different types of RVs, and the 10,000th itself, can be found near Boeing Plaza. “We have a special parking area out in front of Boeing Plaza where we have 10 aircraft that we’re parking,” said Sterling Langrell, EAA 790930, and technical support at Van’s Aircraft. “We didn’t quite get one of each model, but we have a 3, 4, and 6 all represented, those are sort of the legacy models. The 10,000th was an RV-7, he’s there. We have an RV-8, an RV-10, one 12, and two 14s. And I think there’s going to be a second RV-7.” Sterling said many of those RVs will move to Boeing Plaza tomorrow, and join others to form a group featuring one of every type of RV. Many models are also shown at the main Van’s booth,

where staff are on hand to answer questions from builders, prospective builders, and anyone else who might have them. “We’ve got most of the models represented here in the booth, and we’re just here to talk to people, get them the information they’re looking for, introduce them to the airplanes and get them seated in it so they can see if it’s the airplane they want,” Sterling said. The Van’s Aircraft prototype department is in Oshkosh for AirVenture, but unlike some of their colleagues they won’t be found in the company booth. Instead, they’ll be helping thousands of AirVenture attendees assemble an RV-12iS, the 2018 One Week Wonder airplane. “Basically our entire prototype department will be here, not in our booth but over helping to build the One Week Wonder,” Sterling said. “They’ll be doing all the organizing and telling everybody what exactly needs to be done.” The Van’s Aircraft booth can be found in the North Aircraft Display, across Booths 631, 632, and 633 on Wittman Road.

KidVenture Turns 20 at AirVenture 2018 BY TI WINDISCH

KIDVENTURE, THE AREA OF EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH meant to help introduce young people to aviation, is celebrating its 20th anniversary at AirVenture 2018. Located at Pioneer Airport, this highly interactive area contains handson building and piloting activities just for kids. Participants can earn FAA credit through hands-on building projects that count toward A&P certificates, learn how to fly an RC airplane, and more. Introduced in 1998, KidVenture was originally housed in a large tent outside of the Eagle Hangar. EAA board member and KidVenture volunteer chair Dan Majka, EAA Lifetime 90726, said that first year took a lot of quick work from Chapter 790 volunteers to get ready. “After the last person left from the Gathering, we cleaned up all the tables, rolled them out, put booths up, curtains, things like that,” Dan said. “And we had our simple activities for KidVenture. We were expecting 500 kids, and we had 50 volunteers. Two thousand [kids] showed up. It went from there, and expanded every year.” KidVenture eventually moved to Pioneer Airport, where it has since expanded to the Wittman and Vette

One of the most iconic parts of KidVenture is the nametags made as part of a useful lesson on riveting. They cannot be bought, so the satisfaction of owning one includes anyone seeing it knowing the wearer made it themselves. Roughly 1,500 are made each year at KidVenture.

and leave KidVenture knowing more about aviation than they did when they arrived. That education expands beyond piloting, according to Dan. “The important thing is not to make them a pilot,” he said. “The important thing is to make them an aviation enthusiast.”

Dan started KidVenture at the behest of former EAA President Tom Poberezny, and said the program has met its initial goals. New programs, such as teaching rib stitching and sand casting a medallion, have been introduced for 2018. “We try to keep things fresh, because we have a lot of repeat customers come back year after year,” he said. “We have kids who went through KidVenture, have grown up, are now volunteering as adults, and are bringing their kids through. It’s a family thing, and that’s what Tom wanted.” The KidVenture area is open Monday, July 23, through Saturday, July 28, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and on Sunday, July 29, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Shuttles run throughout the day between the Bus Park Tower and the EAA Aviation Museum.

Camp Scholler Pancake Breakfasts to Raise Funds for Chapters BY MEGAN ESAU

EAA CHAPTER-HOSTED PANCAKE breakfasts will debut at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 at the new Camp Scholler Chapters Pavilion, located adjacent to the Fly Market at the edge of Paul’s Woods. All proceeds go to the hosting chapters. The breakfasts will kick off today, with an informal ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:30 a.m., and chapters will serve pancakes Sunday through Friday from 7 to 11 a.m. daily.

“Participating in a fly-in pancake breakfast at the chapter level at a home airport not only provides an opportunity for a chapter to engage in an activity together to raise some funds, but it also gives the opportunity for local fliers in the area to have a destination to fly to where they know they’re going to meet their people, their likeminded friends in aviation,” said EAA Chapters Manager John Egan. Keith Lindsay, the volunteer pancake breakfast

coordinator, said his EAA Chapter 38, which will host breakfast on Sunday and Monday, plans to use those funds to purchase materials for a chapter build project. “EAA has a capability where if people have kits or projects and they get tired of them or outgrow them or can’t afford it, they can donate it to the EAA, and EAA will turn around and find a chapter to take it over,” he said. “Our [chapter’s] goal is to make enough money and then get one of these projects from EAA, and then we’ll have the money to kick-start it.” John said in 2018, EAA hopes to grow the Oshkosh pancake breakfast concept by allowing chapters to personalize their menus to reflect breakfasts from their home regions around the United States. One EAA chapter will host the pancake breakfast each day, and the breakfasts are open to all EAA members and AirVenture attendees for $7 per person. EXPERIMENTAL CATEGORY AIRCRAFT owners may not know that any change to a fuel system is considered by the FAA to be a major change and could require re-establishing compliance to the aircraft’s operating limitations. That’s not only adding or removing a fuel pump, but also rerouting fuel lines and adding or removing a fuel tank. It also extends to the fuel itself. Using a fuel that is not approved as an aviation fuel by the FAA is considered a major change and would require compliance with the major change provisions of the aircraft’s operating limitations. Owners and operators of experimental aircraft are required to operate the aircraft in accordance with those limitations. They are considered to be a part of the aircraft’s airworthiness certificate and must be carried in the aircraft at all times. A major change is a change that appreciably affects the weight, balance, structural strength, reliability, operational characteristics, or other characteristics affecting the

airworthiness of the aircraft, for example changing to a different engine or propeller. When such a change is made, the owner or operator of the aircraft needs to follow the procedure called out in the aircraft’s operating limitations to re-establish compliance with 91.319(b), the regulation that requires the aircraft to be flight-tested before conducting normal operations. Most builders and pilots are familiar with the initial Phase I flight testing of an experimental aircraft, but many are not aware that an additional flight-test period is required after incorporating a major change. That includes a fuel system change or the use of a fuel not approved as an aviation fuel by the FAA. Data shows that fuel issues are a major cause of accidents in experimental aircraft, so it is important that proper testing be done when changes are made. That’s important not only for FAA compliance regarding your aircraft’s operating limitations, but also for your own safety.

AIR FORCE RESERVE BRINGS BIG IRON FOR YEAR OF THE TANKER THE AIR FORCE Reserve is celebrating its 70th anniversary at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018, bringing part of its impressive fleet of military refueling aircraft as part of AirVenture’s Year of the Tanker event theme. EAA AirCam to Fly Young Eagles BY MEGAN ESAU

A LOCKWOOD AIRCAM built by EAA volunteers throughout six weeklong work sessions in 2017 is nearing its mission to give introductory flights to youths as a part of EAA’s Young Eagles program. The AirCam, which will be on display in the Homebuilders Hangar throughout the week of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018, was given its yellow and blue colors in spring, with a custom Scheme Designers paint scheme and paint donated by AkzoNobel. EAA’s Director of Chapters and Communities & Homebuilt Community Manager Charlie Becker, who is overseeing the build, said they are currently finishing the installation of the AirCam’s Dynon avionics package, and the aircraft will hopefully make its first flight this fall. The AirCam project was conceptualized in early 2017 as a way to celebrate and promote the 25th anniversary of the Young Eagles program, which has flown more than 2 million youths since its inception. “The primary mission of this aircraft will be to fly Young Eagles out of Pioneer Airport, which is based right behind EAA headquarters,” Charlie said. “For those that don’t know, we

offer free Young Eagles flights to any eligible kid who comes through the museum every day during the summer months. This aircraft will be one of the two aircraft that take on that role as soon as it’s completed and the flighttest time is flown off.” In addition to its primary mission of flying Young Eagles off Pioneer Airport, the AirCam will also be used

to support EAA’s air-to-air photo missions with lighter and slower homebuilt and ultralight aircraft at future AirVenture conventions. The volunteers who helped complete the build project ranged from homebuilding novices to building experts, and they are excited to see the AirCam represent homebuilding at AirVenture and to eventually fulfill its mission.

“I’ve recently retired from the airlines, and it was my goal to do something for a younger generation of future pilots, so this was a thrilling opportunity to build an aircraft that I love, the AirCam,” said AirCam volunteer John Cox. “To hear that they’re going to be flying young individuals next year off of Pioneer field makes it well worth the time.”

Improve Your Homebuilding Skills at AirVenture With SOLIDWORKS BY RANDY DUFAULT

SINCE 2016, ALL EAA members can access and use Dassault Systèmes SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD software to help with the design, building, and enhancement of experimental aircraft components and, quite possibly, entire airplanes. “SOLIDWORKS is the industry standard for computer-aided design. Aircraft and kit manufacturers from Cirrus to Zenith are designing today’s aircraft in SOLIDWORKS, and now EAA members [have] access to this powerful tool,” said EAA CEO and Chairman of the Board Jack J. Pelton at the time of the original announcement. However, one of the challenges with any complex piece of software is learning how to use it. According to EAA Membership Development Manager Cory Puri, now is the time to take the next step of making SOLIDWORKS an effective part of experimental aviation. Toward that goal, Cory and a team of dedicated volunteers are introducing SOLIDWORKS University here at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018. Members at the convention can register for one of 400 one-hour time slots available at the SOLIDWORKS lab inside the Pilot Proficiency Center (one of the EAA Four Corners). Cory wants to remind members to make sure they write down the date and time of the reservation. Approximately 200 openings are still available as of press time. Members with little or no experience using SOLIDWORKS should attend a session during the first two hours of each day. Those are instructor-led and provide a good introduction into the basics of 3D CAD software and basic operation of SOLIDWORKS. Sessions over the balance of the day are open labs. Available exercises include: • A panel layout scenario that involves placing models of instruments and electronics on a blank panel, with a goal of producing blueprints and cutting directions for the panel.

• An airframe design scenario that involves creating a fuselage wireframe, applying pipe (tube) materials to it, transferring the design to SOLIDWORKS’ weldments module, and ultimately creating a materials list with cutting instructions. • An airfoil tutorial that allows import of a set of airfoil coordinates with a goal of producing rib design specifications. • A modification scenario that works through the design of a Van’s RV-10 exhaust fairing by importing photos of a real aircraft. ROYAL AIR FORCE FORD MUSTANG UP FOR BIDDING AT THE GATHERING FORD MOTOR COMPANY is once again supporting EAA’s youth aviation education programs by auctioning a one-of-a-kind vehicle that salutes an aviation legend, as the Royal Air Force Eagle Squadron Ford Mustang GT is unveiled at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018. The vehicle, specially designed and built by Ford design engineers and drifting champion Vaughn Gittin Jr. and his RTR group, will be up for bid during EAA’s biggest fundraiser, The Gathering, on Thursday. “For 20 years, Ford Motor Company has supported EAA’s programs to build the next generation of aviators through commitments such as these one-of-akind collector vehicles,” said Jack Pelton, EAA CEO and chairman of the board. “This exclusive automotive salute to the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force and the famed Eagle Squadron of World War II makes this Mustang GT an even more desirable highlight of The Gathering auction.” The Eagle Squadron Mustang GT features a 700-hp 5.0-liter Ford V-8 topped with a Ford Performance supercharger, an RTR carbon fiber

wide-body kit, and a tactical performance suspension package. The Eagle Squadron Mustang GT is inspired by the British Spitfire fighter planes that flew over the fields of Goodwood nearly 80 years ago. The Eagle Squadron included a number of American volunteer fighter pilots prior to the United States’ entry into the war. The Mustang GT made its first appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom on July 12. Gittin piloted the supercharged Mustang GT up the famed Goodwood hill climb. Following that appearance, the car was transported to the United States for its unveiling at AirVenture and is currently in the Ford tent. The high bidder for the vehicle will also receive an all-inclusive package for two to attend the 2018 Ford Woodward Dream Cruise in Detroit, Michigan, in August, where they will receive their vehicle as well as a plaque autographed by Gittin and members of the Ford design team. AIRVENTURE CUP RACE CHALLENGES ’EM ALL BY FREDERICK A. JOHNSEN

AN AIR RACE that accommodates J-3 Cubs, Turbine Legends, and varieties of aircraft between those speed ranges, the Air Venture Cup Race is one reason fliers come to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Starting in Mitchell, South Dakota, at 9 a.m. today, the racecourse covers about 400 miles before fliers land in Wausau, Wisconsin, where a barbecue awaits them. From there, many participants will make the hop to Oshkosh. Expect to see some of this year’s AirVenture Cup entrants arriving at Oshkosh around 2 p.m. today. Racing aircraft are grouped into 19 categories that consider things like engine size and number, production or experimental status, landing gear configuration, and induction type, all intended to keep the categories comp e t i t i v e . T h e A i r Ve n t u r e C u p embraces the competitive spirit of events like the classic cross-country National Air Races. John Secord, a veteran of several AirVenture Cup races, explained that the reason for landing at Wausau is to prevent race traffic from conflicting with other Oshkosh arrivals. Then, the race participants can queue up with regular inbound traffic for AirVenture.

“There’s a large misconception about what the race is,” Secord said. He explained that the race is a social event for participants, and not a nail-biting dash. Aircraft are not in close formation or near to the ground like typical pylon racers. Entrants are vetted, but there’s no set minimum for flying experience. He added that they have brand new pilots as well as veteran fliers. The pilot roster includes plumbers, electricians, doctors, and test pilots, he said. Secord, EAA 1142283, said the average age of pilots in the race is 56, with some as young as 21 or as old as 83. For 2018, around 75 entrants are logged in. There will be a winner in each class, as well as one overall speed award. A prize that has been snatched by Turbine Legend and Lancair Legacy pilots, top speed is well north of 400 mph. Over two-and-a-half decades, the group responsible for the AirVenture Cup Race has tweaked its plans to accommodate the unexpected, like weather. Typically alternating courses every other year, the 400-mile route to Wausau starts at Mitchell or at Mount Vernon in Missouri. The racers who arrive at AirVenture are typically parked near Boeing Plaza, where the aircraft can be inspected by show attendees.

Simulation Gets Closer to Reality With Virtual Flight Academy BY RANDY DUFAULT

SIMULATION TECHNOLOGY IS finally at a point where true instruction for experienced pilots and, more importantly, for prospective pilots is a reality, according to Brandon Seltz, founder and CEO of TakeFlight Interactive. “I’ve had the aviation bug since I was young,” Brandon said. “I soon saw the opportunity to create a new technology, our virtual flight instructor, to make your time in simulators far more effective. It’s not intended to replace a real flight instructor, but to help make your experience of learning to fly, or improving your proficiency, much more efficient and fun.” TakeFlight combined innovations in artificial intelligence, game-based learning, and data analytics to create a new capability — a virtual flight instructor. This virtual instructor guides users through maneuvers in the simulator, just as a flight instructor would in a real airplane. EAA has teamed up with TakeFlight to create the Virtual Flight Academy (VFA). VFA consists of the first six

instructional modules of the TakeFlight program and is free to EAA members, a first for the industry. The next six modules parallel the curriculum necessary for a first solo and are available to members at a discount. TakeFlight plans to implement the entire private pilot training program in the near future. In each module, the virtual instructor first presents the lesson and potentially demonstrates the included maneuvers. The student then flies the maneuvers with commentary and help from the instructor. Each effort then receives a score based on the FAA’s airman certification standards so students are able to track their proficiency and progress exactly as they would in a real aircraft. Two versions of the free module are available: one geared for EAA members and another geared toward Young Eagles that uses the voice of Aviore, the Young Eagles superhero mascot. version of VFA on three world-class at-home flight-simulator stations, sponsored by Thrustmaster and Volair, inside the Innovation Showcase at Aviation Gateway Park. A scoring leader board will promote a bit of friendly competition.

Doug was a B-17 ball turret gunner with the 305th Bomb Group and flew 32 missions over Europe. For a number of years, Doug volunteered in the Welcome Center selling B-17 rides and inspiring countless people with his wartime stories. He died last winter.

THE EAA AIR Academy is celebrating its 35th anniversary during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018, as the longest-running aviation resident education camp in the country adds another several dozen students to its list of distinguished alumni. Sarah Borg, EAA 1146700, attended the Air Academy in 1996 and said she first believed she could be a pilot because of her time there. She believes EAA Air Academy Camp Director Scott Cameron, and everyone who works to make the academy possible, deserves a lot of credit for their efforts. “It’s probably not said enough how much the alumni of the Air Academy appreciate the volunteers and staff of the Air Academy,” Sarah said. “For years, Scott Cameron has put his life into it, along with the other staffers. It’s been valuable and life-changing and meaningful to everyone that gets to return back to AirVenture every year, and all the alumni that meet up in the campground. That experience was really important, and the staff created the atmosphere of the Air Academy.” For many Air Academy graduates, the relationships built with those did not end when they finished their stay in Oshkosh. Lifelong friendships are formed at the academy, and as Sarah mentioned, many graduates of the program camp together at AirVenture every year. This year’s 35th anniversary celebrations include presentations and lunch for alumni and staff, which is planned for Tuesday during AirVenture at the Air Academy Lodge. It all comes back to Paul, who so astutely pointed out that while the airplanes bring people together, the relationships formed with others are what keep people coming back. The Air Academy is

hugely important in its role sparking lifelong involvement with aviation, but its role in building lifelong friendships is still the best part for Scott. “It’s just fun to see the excitement, but also the tears at the end of the program when the kids leave,” he said. “It’s not tears of sadness or anything, but because they’ve made such quality friendships with colleagues, fellow campers, and we did hit a heartstring with them. To me,

In 1983, former EAA Education Director Chuck Larsen had a conversation with former EAA Museum Director Ralph Bufano to explore how they could reach more young people.

Scheme Designers Custom Aircraft Livery Takes Center Stage SCHEME DESIGNERS WILL be boasting two significant paint schemes — that of EAA’s own One Week Wonder build project and the 10,000th RV — at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018, in addition to showcasing its 13,000 custom paint schemes completed on hundreds of aircraft at Booth 3056 in Epic Aircraft Exhibit Hangar C.

As with the 2014 One Week Wonder, Scheme Designers was again chosen to provide a selection of paint schemes specially designed for the 2018 project, a Van’s RV-12iS. AirVenture visitors will have the opportunity to cast a vote for their favorite scheme in the One Week Wonder build area. The aircraft will be built by volunteers throughout the week. The milestone 10,000th RV will be on display in the Homebuilts area, along with other featured RVs. Van’s Aircraft has awarded David Porter, EAA 745227, the builder of the 10,000th RV, with the design of custom livery by Scheme Designers for his aircraft. Scheme Designers owner and chief designer, Craig Barnett, EAA 552129, will also host two free workshops at AirVenture 2018. In his interactive sessions, he will share critical guidelines and best design practices for a variety of makes and models of aircraft, for owners and companies to use when designing their new aircraft livery and in choosing paint shops. “Designing the Perfect Paint Scheme” will be taught Tuesday, at 10 a.m. at Poly Fiber Forum Pavilion 10 and on Saturday, July 28, at 11:30 a.m. at Workshop Classroom B. “Consideration in Aircraft Painting” will be taught Thursday, at 1 p.m. at Forum Pavilion 11.

HARTZELL HOSTS TECH TALKS & MORE WITH MORE THAN 500,000 Hartzell propellers manufactured and flown over the past 100 years, propellers will be everywhere at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018. Anchoring Hartzell Propeller’s presence will be the company’s exhibit, where it will host a series of technical talks on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 10 a.m. with topics ranging from choosing a propeller for experimental aircraft to proper propeller care and maintenance. The company is also sponsoring several exciting flying demonstrations, as well as co-sponsoring the growing EAA Pilot Proficiency Center. At Booth 296-297 in the Main Aircraft Display, Hartzell will feature its range of

two-blade through five-blade constantspeed aluminum and structural composite propellers that provide highly reliable and maximum performance to thousands of pilots around the world. On display will be Hartzell’s two-blade composite Trailblazer, three-blade Bantam and Raptor applications, four-blade aluminum and composite options, and five-blade carbon fiber propellers for various aircraft models. In addition, aerobatic performers including Ken Rieder and Jon Thocker of Redline Airshows, Sean D. Tucker, and Michael Goulian will hold autograph sessions with their aircraft at the Hartzell exhibit on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 10 a.m.

LEE AEROSPACE PRESENTS NEW WINDOW TECH LEE AEROSPACE, THE aerospace window, aerostructure, and composite provider headquartered in Wichita, Kansas, will introduce a new window technology option, CoolView, during its first appearance at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. The company says CoolView window replacements will block up to 62 percent of the infrared rays (heat) coming through the windows, resulting in a significantly cooler cabin. In addition, they block virtually all of the harmful UV rays. The process involves production of an internal metallic barrier rather than

an external coating that can wear off or need to be reapplied. Lee Aerospace will install CoolView replacements virtually anywhere. “We operate an FAA-certified repair station for repairs and installations, and our A&P mechanics and FAA-certified technicians will travel wherever they’re needed to install the windows and get the aircraft immediately back into service with a minimum of downtime.” Lee Aerospace can be found in Thrustmaster Gaming Exhibit Hangar B, Booth 2128.

VOLUNTEERS FROM VETERANS Airlift Command (VAC) will fly Tuskegee Airman Lt. Col. George Hardy into EAA AirVenture Oshkosh today, arriving around 11:15 a.m. to Boeing Plaza. VAC is flying Hardy from his home in Florida on board Millennium Phenom, a 2010 Embraer Phenom 100 featuring airbrushed art in homage to Star Wars and Star Trek. The paint scheme was designed to bring attention to the work of the VAC while creating a fun, unforgettable experience for their veteran guests. It’s

owned by Mark Holt, EAA 426333, and will be on display at Boeing Plaza this week. Holt has dedicated his retirement, and his former corporate jet, to serving and honoring veterans and their families by donating his time and aircraft for VAC flights. Hardy is one of the first AfricanAmerican military pilots in the United States and served in the skies of the European theater in World War II. He will also be accompanied by Doug Rozendaal, Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Red Tail Squadron leader.
