In fact, in 1956, before moving to Rockford, Illinois, in 1959. At that 10 of them weren’t even in Wisconsin. time, the fly-in was a four-day affair.

HOME / PAGE 1 After 10 years in Rockford, we’d run out of room. Oshkosh became the prime choice because of its central location, the unusual airport layout, the availability of land around the grounds, and the support of the legendary race pilot and former airport manager Steve Wittman.

On August 1, 1970, the gates opened and the fly-in had found its home.

EAA put down roots in Oshkosh, erecting buildings and buying land for further expansion. The convention and its growing air show continued to draw aircraft of all shapes and sizes, from blimps, to jets, to what would become iconic homebuilts, such as Burt Rutan bringing his VariViggen and, later, the VariEze and Long-EZ to Oshkosh.

The 1970s also saw EAA expand as an organization, with the Antique Classic Division (now the Vintage Aircraft Association) and the International Aerobatic Club joining Warbirds of America as special-interest divisions.

Seaplane participation grew as logistics were improved, connecting the long-established EAA Seaplane Base with the main convention grounds.

In 1983, we celebrated the dedication of the EAA Aviation Center, which combined our headquarters with our new museum. In 1989, we closed the decade with the opening of the Eagle Hangar, a major addition to our already worldclass museum, and the unveiling of the EAA Memorial Wall, which stands as a tribute to those who have gone west.

A British Airways Concorde paid the first of several visits in 1985, firmly establishing Oshkosh as the world’s premier aviation event. In 1987, we welcomed a gathering of Mercury astronauts, the U.S. Air Force sent a B-1 bomber in 1988, and, in 1989, it followed suit with an SR-71

We kicked off the 1990s with a string of commemorations that carried on throughout the decade, looking back to the World War II era, the golden age of air racing, classic airliners, and the 25th anniversary of the moon landing.

The 1990s weren’t just about looking back, however. In 1992, we made

a commitment to the future of aviation by flying the first three of what would eventually become 2.2 million ( a n d c o u n t i n g ) Yo u n g E a g l e s .

KidVenture opened on the grounds of our museum’s Pioneer Airport in 1999, offering a collection of hands-on activities and experiences at the flyin that became known as AirVenture that decade.

To start off the new millennium, we celebrated major milestones including the Wright brothers’ history-making flights at Kitty Hawk, Alcock and Brown’s nonstop trans-Atlantic flight in a modified Vickers Vimy, and Charles Lindbergh’s New York to Paris flight.

The second decade of the 21st century started with a splash, as record rainfall hit AirVenture. In 2013, we marked the end of an era at Oshkosh, when we said goodbye to our founder, Paul Poberezny, who died August, 22.

While we remembered that loss, we were also able to look forward when our ceremonial 2 millionth Young Eagle was flown in 2016. The 2010s were highlighted by a slew of only-in-Oshkosh moments, including B-29s Doc and FIFI flying together for the first time in decades.

We saluted famed designer Dick VanGrunsven, EAA Lifetime 3204, when the original RV-1 prototype was restored, flown to Oshkosh, and donated to our museum in 2012. Just six years later we were celebrating with Dick once again, this time commemorating the successful completion and flight of the 10,000th customer-built RV. AirVenture transforms an airport and its environs into a city, bustling with activity on every corner, from the air shows to all of the events and activities on the grounds. But that’s not what AirVenture Oshkosh actually is. Those things may help describe the annual flyin, but they don’t define it.

“As we look ahead to the next 50 conventions, we’re committed to preserving and nourishing the culture that Paul created, the culture that has made Oshkosh so special to all of us,” EAA CEO and Chairman of the Board Jack J. Pelton said.

“The annual fly-in belongs to every EAA member, and it’s our privilege — and our obligation — to honor and uphold the traditions of aviation’s family reunion.”

THE FIRST OSHKOSH No, it wasn’t in 1970

ANYONE ATTENDING AIRVENTURE this year can look around

the grounds and see we’re celebrating something special — EAA’s 50th convention in Oshkosh. Except we’re not. If you read the fine print, as it were, you’ll see that we’re actually celebrating the 50th consecutive convention. That’s because, before we moved to Oshkosh permanently, EAA came for a visit, holding our fourth annual fly-in here on August 3-5, 1956.

After three fly-ins in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the move was announced in the July 1956 issue of Experimenter, under the headline, “We’re Off To Oshkosh, B’Gosh!” The event was scheduled to coincide with the Winnebago Land International Air Meet and Races, hosted by racing legend and airport manager — and namesake — Steve Wittman, who was also the chairman of the fly-in committee.

While the airport was, obviously, well-suited to host our annual fly-in, the same cannot be said of the weather.

“The first afternoon brought quite a bit of rain and gloom, and on Saturday morning, the fog was right down to the ground,” wrote Leo J. Kohn in the September 1956 issue of Experimenter. “Sunday morning saw more rain and fog. … If the weather would have been clear over all three days, we are sure that attendance would have doubled.”

As it was, the event drew 51 showplanes and an estimated 300 visiting aircraft. Contemporary reports estimated total attendance of 100,000 people, just 500 of them EAA members. It was decided soon thereafter to avoid holding our convention in conjunction with other events, and the move back to Milwaukee for 1957 was announced in the same story.

“Bill Lotzer, manager of Curtiss-Wright Airport, has assured us that the airport will be ours on the weekend that we want it,” Kohn wrote.

It would be another 14 years before we brought our convention back to Oshkosh, this time for good. So, as we celebrate 50 in a row this year, spare a thought for those

hardy souls who braved terrible weather the first time around, and for everyone who worked so hard back in 1970 to give Oshkosh the second chance it deserved.

Follow the historic journey of EAA’s move to Oshkosh in 1970, the explosion of the homebuilt movement, Concorde’s arrival in Oshkosh, aerobatics’ top performers, and the iconic Blue Angels, Thunderbirds, and Snowbirds performances in

the Oshkosh skies. Also included will be special behind-thescenes, never-before-seen footage of Paul, Audrey, and Tom Poberezny. All of this and much more will be covered tonight at the 50th in Oshkosh celebration at Theater in the Woods, beginning at 8:30 p.m.

This is an especially notable year, as our 67th annual fly-in convention also marks our 50th consecutive EAA gathering in Oshkosh. The unforgettable moments over the past half-century have made the word “Oshkosh” instantly recognizable in the world of aviation.

AirVenture encompasses every segment of flight in one massive aviation family reunion. Even with all that bigness, if you will, a magic element of Oshkosh is that our individual experiences are made up of thousands of small moments — a surprise meeting with an old friend, a discovery of something new or unexpected, or a shared smile while watching what EAA founder Paul Poberezny called “the vast ocean of air above us.”

While you’re here, please remember the “Oshkosh rules” created by Paul: Treat everyone with kindness, be respectful around all aircraft, and pick up that stray piece of trash you see on the grounds. And be sure to thank our volunteers who make it happen.

All of these things create one of the most remarkable events in the world.

For more than 50 years, for many of us it has simply been Oshkosh. Thanks for being a part of it and part of the EAA family.

A dynamic panel of speakers has been lined up for the Wednesday evening programming at Theater in the Woods. The event will be moderated by retired Lt. Col. Olga Custodio, a former T-38 instructor who was the first female Hispanic military pilot in the U.S. Air Force and is now retired from American Airlines. Custodio is back for her second year as the moderator of the event.

Gen. Maryanne Miller, commander of Air Mobility Command and the first four-star general in the Air Force Reserve, will be a speaker during the evening’s programming. Miller, who also spoke at Theater in the Woods last summer, is the first reservist to lead Air Mobility Command.

Friday night and Saturday, workers and volunteers have been working nearly nonstop to clear standing water and mud before the start of today’s fly-in and convention.

EAA Director of Communications Dick Knapinski said workers have been dumping woodchips and gravel in muddy areas, while also vacuuming up water to get waterlogged areas somewhat dryer.

In addition, volunteers on tractors have been pulling motor homes and vehicles out of the mud, and have a long list of vehicles still left to move.

Airport parking and EAA camping was closed Saturday and Sunday to give the grounds a chance to dry out. That meant campers were forced to temporarily park on neighboring roads or local parking lots until both were opened again. Planes with tundra tires were allowed to land on Sunday since those tires distribute the weight so well, Dick said.

In addition, EAA sent out two Bell 47 helicopters on Sunday to hover over areas like the grass taxiway south of N-27, Dick said. “If we can get the grass taxiways dry where most of the airplanes run, then we can start parking them and finding dry spots,” he said.

John Doucha, foreman of the aviation center grounds, said his crew also was using woodchips in low areas and pathways, adding gravel in muddy areas to help vehicles get traction, and trying to keep people from parking on the grass, in an effort to keep down the mud. “But we only have so many trucks and materials that we can use,” he said.

Keeping AirVenture Connected Wi-Fi: The what, where, and why to your internet lifeline

improving, and so is EAA’s commitment to having a complimentary Wi-Fi service on the grounds.

Tom Moule, EAA’s director of IT, said that although it would be nice, it is not feasible to have the same sort of connectivity in Oshkosh during AirVenture as it is in your living room at home.

“At home you have 50-100 MBs (megabits) type of service,” Tom said.

“Our Wi-Fi is 2 MBs for each user or from each device. That (at-home) kind of service is extremely difficult to provide in this environment. Our Wi-Fi is not geared towards your at-home experience. We provide Wi-Fi here more for

preventing tall structures near the flightline, and the sheer size of the AirVenture grounds at this point, Tom said getting Wi-Fi all across the entire event is not

currently feasible. The South 40 is among the areas that the IT team will assess and work to make more connected. A consistent effort is made to ensure high-volume areas of need are accommodated.

“We (EAA) offer complimentary Wi-Fi over the grounds, not all over the grounds due to multiple reasons, but in the highly populated areas,” Tom said.

EAA is dedicated to improving the Wi-Fi on the AirVenture grounds each year, and Tom said infrastructure costing more than $1 million has been invested into improving the internet coverage in Oshkosh over the past four years.

In the meantime, while Wi-Fi is not everywhere, AirVenture attendees can always find the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot to ensure they have a solid connection when they may need it.

Sport Aircraft, and Rick Hayes from Hayes Aero will be building an Aerolite 103 kit during the week in the Ultralight area, aka the Fun Fly Zone. AirVenture 2019 attendees will be able to observe an experienced person assemble a quick-build kit and learn useful tips and tricks for building ultralights.

EAA Ultralight and Light-Plane Community Manager/Member Programs Specialist Timm Bogenhagen said the goal of the project is to demonstrate how affordable, fun, and easy a kit like the Aerolite 103, which complies with ultralight regulations, is to build.

“The goal is to spend five days building, and then on Saturday evening during the 6:30 flying period for ultralights, it would taxi up and down the grass runway,” Timm said. “It won’t fly because being a newly built ultralight, AirVenture is not the appropriate environment to test fly it, from a safety standpoint.”

The build will start and finish during the week of AirVenture. “The Aerolite kits have a lot of assembly and very little fabrication,” Timm said. “The construction type is typical of ultralight-style aircraft where aluminum tubes are joined together using brackets and gussets and covered with colorful Dacron sailcloth.” This method of construction drastically reduces build time.

The build will take place starting today in the workshop tent in the Fun Fly Zone, right next to the Ultralight Barn.

John Maxfield, EAA 63692, started attending EAA conventions in Rockford and has not missed one since 1966.

Some people attend AirVenture once and buy into it for life, some get the EAA bug later on in life, and others are born into it. John Maxfield, EAA 63692, grew up in an EAA family just down the street from where Ford TriMotors were built at the old Ford Airport in Dearborn, Michigan.

John’s father was a member of EAA Chapter 113, and John played in the sand piles with his EAA friends as the adults built their first chapter hangar. John

The camaraderie is one reason John Maxfield has been attending AirVenture since the 1960s and volunteering since 1970.

soloed in his 1948 family Funk airplane on his 16th birthday and got his private pilot certificate when he was 17 years old.

He eventually worked his way through college as an A&P mechanic and started flying corporate for Chrysler after graduation. Since then, life has come full circle for John, as he is now one of EAA’s volunteer pilots who fly the Ford Tri-Motor on tour and at Oshkosh.

John was 6 years old in 1964 when his father took him to the EAA fly-in convention in Rockford, Illinois. He went again in ’65 but missed ’66 due to illness and was heartbroken when his dad left without him. John went again with his father in ’67 and hasn’t missed an AirVenture since.

John said he keeps coming back each year because of the common bond he has formed with the people he has met at AirVenture: the love of flight, such a special bond that he wouldn’t miss for the world.

“EAA’s founder, Paul Poberezny, probably said it best when he said, ‘We come the first time to see the airplanes, but we return each year for the people,’” John said.

Airport. He rode around the fly-in grounds on a flatbed farm trailer, using a megaphone, asking people around them to pick up the field stone in the grass and toss it into the trailer. Since his days of helping EAA keep the grounds free of rocks, he has volunteered as the assistant to the chairman of flightline safety, worked with the south maintenance department, and volunteered as a host in the forums area. Most recently, John has been volunteering his time by serving on EAA’s Chapter Advisory Council.

John said he can’t put his finger on one particular moment that he would call the most memorable, as there are so many, but one experience that never gets old, year after year, is simply flying in.

“Nothing beats the view of Wittman field out my windshield, and the tower controllers say, ‘Welcome to Oshkosh!’”

John said. “It gives me goose bumps every time.”

EVERY YEAR, more than 10,000 aircraft fly

to Wisconsin for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Of those, nearly 3,000 are showplanes — vintage aircraft, warbirds, homebuilts, aerobatic airplanes, etc. — that are displayed around the grounds.

But some visitors may notice other airplanes parked here and there that didn’t fly in at all, because they’re part of the EAA Aviation Museum collection.

Because our museum exhibits rotate, many of these aircraft are only viewable by the public during AirVenture, spending the rest of the year in long-term storage on the convention grounds.

Located at the Four Corners is the EAA AirVenture Welcome Center, EAA Member Center, EAA Pilot Proficiency Center, and EAA Discover Aviation Corner.

EAA is giving pilots even more reasons to stop by the Pilot Proficiency Center during AirVenture this year, as changes to the PPC will include an emphasis on year-round proficiency training, and upgrades to the Redbird flight simulators will feature better graphics and new hardware.

Additionally, the topics for the tech talks will focus on (at least) one of four topics: procedures, tools, weather, and skills, all pertaining to pilots.

EAA Marketing Manager Tricia Rathermel said the Pilot Proficiency Center should be a destination for all sorts of pilots in Oshkosh.

“The AirVenture guests who will gain the most value from this area are those who have soloed or completed their pilot training,” Tricia said. “But, even the most experienced pilot has something to gain from focusing on proficiency.”

The PPC is a great place to visit for simulator training on the Xwind trainer and tech talk topics focused on safety and accuracy in flight.

At the AirVenture Welcome Center, visitors will be able to get all of their AirVenture questions answered, purchase merchandise, visit the 50 Years in Oshkosh mini museum, listen to presentations, and participate in meet-and-greets with notable AirVenture guests.

First Airplane to Land at Oshkosh in 1970 Is Back in 2019 Dyke Delta JD-2 donated to EAA, on display by Brown Arch

JOHN DYKE, EAA Lifetime 3566, gener-

ously donated a one-of-a-kind Dyke Delta JD-2 N555A to EAA that will be on the convention grounds in front of the Brown Arch during AirVenture 2019.

The Dyke Delta JD-2 was the first airplane to land on the EAA Oshkosh grounds in 1970. This model is also the first of its kind, built by John Dyke himself.

John built the Dyke Delta with a wingspan of 22 feet, with the main goal being for it to fit into a single-car garage and be small enough that it could be pulled behind a vehicle on the highway.

“The reason for the Delta, I looked at all of the other airplanes and I wanted a rotable airplane,” John said. “I wanted one that would self-propel out on the highway. Well, the Delta fit the design parameters, the size of it, the folding wing size, and what it would be.”

John started building the Dyke Delta in September 1960. It flew for the first time on July 17, 1962, and has flown for almost 60 years with about 24,000 hours of flying time.

The Dyke Delta is a four-seat monoplane with a retractable tricycle undercarriage. The wings can be folded upward, one atop the other, for towing or storage.

John’s inspiration for the Dyke Delta came from Gen. Alexander Lippisch.

“I was in the Navy, [and] I had the opportunity to go to Germany and visit the Lippisch Museum,” John said. “Gen. Lippisch, he was my mentor. I went and studied everything he did. I sat and read all his books. In fact, I had the opportunity to go through his library.”

John said there was no plan for the Dyke Delta to be the first at AirVenture; it was just pure luck. John’s wife was involved with working on the grounds and had always arrived early to all the conventions for that reason. This time, John decided to come up early, too, and

just so happened to be the first airplane to arrive.

“The first EAA convention I ever went to only had 12 airplanes and eight campers,” John said. “Now that I look at it, it’s just hard to imagine how much it’s grown and how fast it’s grown. As Paul [Poberezny] said one day, we were driving around in his Volkswagen, and he said, ‘John, what do you think about these fly-ins? We never dreamed it would be like this.’”

NASA’s All-Electric X-Plane Marks Major Milestones

NASA’S X-57 PROJECT has marked two criti-

cal milestones, taking two major steps toward demonstrating the benefits of electric propulsion for aviation.

More general aviation aircraft are in the air every year, which means that the challenge to address aircraft efficiency, noise, and emissions becomes greater.

NASA’s X-57 Maxwell, the agency’s first all-electric X-plane, will seek to meet that challenge by demonstrating innovative technology through electric-powered experimental flight.

One of the milestones was achieved as part of X-57’s Mod II activity — the configuration in which the X-57 project will flight test the research propulsion system. Mod II includes the replacement of the baseline aircraft’s two inboard combustion engines with electric cruise motors.

Engineers for the first time tested the motors and propellers, integrated onto the vehicle, in an initial spin test. “This is the first time we’ve had the electric motors installed with propellers and had them spinning,� said Sean Clarke, NASA’s principal investigator for X-57. “This was a big milestone, as it was a big systems test where we were able to run both motors on the airplane at the same time.�

The test verified that the propellers operated as expected as the motors were provided with significant amounts of power for the first time.

Subsequent stages of Mod II testing include testing with the use of batteries.

Once delivered to NASA, the Mod II aircraft will undergo taxi tests and, eventually, experimental flight tests.

While Mod II proceeds toward testing, efforts are already well underway for X-57’s Mod III phase.

Mod III includes the replacement of the aircraft’s baseline wing with a new, high aspect ratio wing, repositioning the electric cruise motors out to the wingtips — an

arrangement that could boost aircraft efficiency considerably, but is not feasible with heavier, traditional combustion engines.

X-57’s Mod III activity achieved its own milestone, as NASA received delivery of the Mod III wing.

Upon delivery, NASA immediately began running tests to verify that the wing’s specifications match NASA’s structure and design models.

Finally, wing loading tests will confirm whether the wing structure acts as predicted as it carries the approximately 3,000-pound aircraft through flight. “I think that getting the wing here really brings Mod III to reality for the team,� said Kirsten Boogaard, X-57 deputy operations engineering lead. “It’s a cool thing when ideas go from concept to reality, but that’s what NASA does.�

The wing began undergoing several tests, including weight and balance measurement, which determines the total mass and the center of gravity on the wing to help NASA verify that the aircraft will perform correctly during taxi and flight tests.

Ground vibration testing considers the engineering challenges of the high aspect ratio wing.

After these tests are complete, NASA will then send the wing back to ESAero, where the wing will undergo fit checks onto a second “fit-check� fuselage. Here, the wing will also have 12 nacelles integrated, which will eventually house 12 small, electric high-lift motors and propellers, which will be featured on X-57’s final phase, Mod IV. NASA is showcasing the X-57 at the NASA Pavilion in Aviation Gateway Park.

ROUNDING UP FOOD OPTIONS AT AIRVENTURE 2019 ONCE AGAIN THIS YEAR, a variety of local Wisconsin restaurants will be positioned

around the grounds to serve up breakfast, lunch, dinner, and everything in between to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2019 attendees. The favorites are back, including fresh doughnuts, which for many are an ingrained part of the tradition that is AirVenture.

The AirVenture concessionaires will feature a variety of styles and flavors, ranging from Wisconsin favorites like brats and cheese sticks to healthier fare, including fresh fruit and vegetables, salads, and wraps. Attendees looking to satisfy a dietary restriction can look for the gluten-free and vegetarian icons on the menus.

New in 2019, the Twin Oaks Food Court located near the EAA Four Corners will host three different restaurants with full menus: Cedar Creek Marketplace, Parker John’s BBQ & Pizza, and the newest addition, Osorio’s Latin Fusion.

He had just dropped off the second person, when he hit muck and quickly found himself stuck. “But this is where karma comes in,” Dick said. Sitting across the road was a man in an SUV who had chains and volunteered to pull him out once the rain stopped.

“I was out in like 10 seconds,” Dick said, “and I’d like to thank EAA member Pat Fargo … who just happened to be sitting on that road in his Suburban, waiting for me to do something like that.”

NEW INTERNATIONAL FEDERAL PAVILION LOCATION HIGHLIGHTS FEDERAL PRESENCE AT AIRVENTURE 2019 THE INTERNATIONAL FEDERAL PAVILION, home to a wide

variety of federal agencies and organizations, is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. today in its new home in Hangar D with an expanded footprint and presence.

A key educational piece of AirVenture, the IFP will continue to have booths with agency representatives present to educate attendees on their agency duties and roles, as well as present dozens of forums throughout the week of the show. This year also marks the 26th anniversary of the International Federal Partnership, which hosts the pavilion. More than a dozen federal agencies from the United States, Canada, and the Bahamas are slated to participate during the week.

“We are very excited about the future of the International Federal Partnership at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh,” said Ed Holicky, IFP chairman. “Please come by our new location and learn more about the organizations involved.”

Many agencies are bringing aircraft, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the U.S. Forest Service, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will also have a hurricane hunter P-3 Orion on display at Boeing Plaza multiple days during the week. The aircraft will be open for tours, and crews will be on hand to answer questions about the aircraft and its mission.

After-Hours Fun Continues With the Twilight Flight Fest AFTER A SUCCESSFUL DEBUT at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 and an expanded sophomore lineup during AirVenture 2018, Twilight Flight Fest at the Fun Fly Zone is back for AirVenture 2019.

As in the past, EAA’s STOL Invitational will kick off the evening festivities, with a number of highly modified bush aircraft showing off their impressive capabilities. This will be an opportunity to witness the incredible short takeoff and landing skills so aptly demonstrated in wilderness environments like river sandbars in remote Alaska.

The evening program will also include the Patriot Parachute Team,

Red Bull Air Force skydivers, and 3D RC demonstrations.

The Patriot Parachute Team and Red Bull Air Force will demonstrate what’s possible with parachutes and wingsuits, while the 3D RC demonstrations are a chance to see these large-scale RC aircraft strut their impressive stuff, including light, laser, and smoke effects.

If the past two years were any indication, onlookers will be thrilled at these unique and accessible ways to enjoy aviation. AirVenture attendees can take in the Twilight Flight Fest tonight, and on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, starting at 8 p.m. in the Fun Fly Zone.

Allegheny County, based in the U.S., which will utilize Boeing learning content for FAA airline transport pilot certification, Jeppesen online courses, training kits, and charting solutions starting in the fall semester.
