Can’t-Miss Events and Celebrations at AirVenture BY KATIE HOLLIDAY-GREENLEY

EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH 2017 marks the 65th annual EAA fly-in convention, and this year’s lineup of events and attractions has something for every aviation enthusiast. The highlight of Monday’s evening entertainment will be the opening night concert presented by Ford Motor Company, featuring the Barenaked Ladies. The show begins at 6 p.m. on Boeing Plaza. Daily afternoon air shows will showcase some of the world’s best aerobatic performers including the U.S. Navy Blue Angels who will highlight the Friday and Saturday shows, and make an additional appearance on Sunday for a non-aerobatic demonstration.
All Together Now! Aircraft groups arrive en masse BY BARBARA A. SCHMITZ
EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH is a weeklong celebration about airplanes and all things aviation. But for the hundreds of people who fly in as groups for an opportunity to park and camp together, it’s as much about renewing old friendships and making new ones. Three groups arrived en masse at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 on Saturday, and three other groups are scheduled to arrive today. CHEROKEES After departing from Waupaca, Wisconsin, Cherokees to Oshkosh became the first to arrive on the AirVenture grounds around noon Saturday. With 21 planes and 40 people from more than 10 states, this was their seventh year of flying in as a group,
said first-year lead pilot Tony Harding. About 33 planes originally registered for the flight, but the numbers dropped as people pulled out because of health, airplane, or work issues, he said. Their arrival was delayed by an hour because of the low ceiling, Tony said, noting that was really the only problem they encountered. But that’s because safety is the No. 1 thing the group preaches during their nationwide clinics. “We usually fly two to four wingspans away from each other, but if someone isn’t comfortable with that, we tell them to go to five wingspans.” To ensure safety, they also mandate that all pilots attend the formal briefing and fly sorties on Friday prior to the group flight, he said.
AirVenture 2017 is the year of the bomber as a host of current and former U.S. military bombers will be in attendance. A U.S. Air Force Boeing B-52 touched down in Oshkosh on July 20 and will be on display on Boeing Plaza throughout the week. It will also be joined by a B-1 and B-2 in a composite flyover Saturday. Following the group of modern bombers will be two B-17s, several B-25s, and two B-29s — FIFI and Doc — in a bomber parade.

2017 Volunteers of the Year Announced Winners will be honored at Volunteer Park BY TI WINDISCH
THE 2017 VOLUNTEERS of the Year have been announced, and as always, some of the best parts of EAA are present in the winners. There are five award recipients this year: Kirk E. Fjetland, Sandy Marsh, Don and Joanie Moder, Barry Valentine, and Alan White. Kirk, EAA 867374, is the president of Chapter 237 and has led the restoration of the EAA B-25 project. In his five-plus years of volunteering, Kirk has helped out at AirVenture, EAA headquarters, within his chapter, and with the EAA AirCam build, too. “I don’t know what to say. You don’t do it for the awards or the recognition; you do it because it’s fun,” Kirk said. “This whole thing wouldn’t have happened if we didn’t have such a great chapter with great people in it.” In addition to bringing his own chapter to help out with projects, Kirk has also organized multi-chapter work parties, combining multiple EAA chapters to work together to get what needs to get done, done. Kirk also organizes airport tours and aviation briefings for local schools. Sandy, EAA 274927, has helped out with various chapter activities and at AirVenture for more than four decades. EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 will be her last year as chairwoman of the Activities Center, although she plans to continue volunteering for the foreseeable future. “I feel honored, humbled, and like I really need to share this with all the volunteers,” Sandy said. “It’s not just me, but everyone who’s gone before us who make this convention what it is. It’s pretty amazing when I think about all the volunteers there are.” In addition to her chairwoman position, during her time at AirVenture, Sandy has also volunteered with Operation Thirst, Outdoor Exhibits, South Maintenance, Convention Headquarters, and pitched in wherever else help was needed. Don, EAA 432323, and Joanie have spent more than three decades volunteering at AirVenture and EAA headquarters. Don and Joanie have moved around to help out across multiple areas in their time volunteering, with Don assisting at the Weeks Hangar and the maintenance department, and Joanie helping at the volunteer kitchen, aircraft showplane registration, and in the Wearhouse.

Dorothy Hilbert Award Winner Announced Fay Gregory named as recipient BY TI WINDISCH
FAY GREGORY HAS been a valuable resource at Boeing Plaza since before it was called Boeing Plaza, and is now the latest recipient of the Dorothy Hilbert Award. The Hilbert Award is given to a female volunteer who exhibits the passion, dedication, and devotion for volunteerism that Dorothy presented throughout her life and time spent at EAA AirVenture. “I’m thrilled and so very honored,” Fay said. “The west ramp crew has become family over the years. It brings such joy to see and work with these wonderful and dedicated volunteers.” Fay has volunteered at AirVenture for more than 30 years, and has been at Boeing Plaza since Tom Poberezny asked her and her late husband, Marion, to oversee the area. The volunteer crew there grew from six volunteers in the late 1980s who didn’t have radios or golf carts, and worked out of a borrowed motor home, into today’s group of more than 100 volunteers outfitted with everything they need, mostly thanks to Fay. Helping to build up any part of Oshkosh is a big deal, but to play such a role in the evolution of Boeing Plaza is a huge deal. This year, the plaza will house Blue Origin, a plethora of bombers including a B-52 Stratofortress, a B-1 Lancer, and a B-2 Spirit, among other incredible aircraft. Fay, in addition to everything she’s done individually, has contributed by bringing many other volunteers into the fold, both in Boeing Plaza and across the grounds. Fay’s granddaughter is a volunteer photographer for Warbirds judges, showing that volunteerism can run in the family. After hearing the way Fay talks about how important volunteers are, it’s no wonder why so many enjoy coming back to work with her year after year. “Every volunteer is a piece of a huge puzzle that when put together becomes a beautiful work of art,” Fay said. “It is truly fascinating to watch everyone do their part to make it look like a well-oiled machine in motion. Once you become part of it, you’re hooked. It becomes an obsession, a passion.” Fay will officially receive the Dorothy Hilbert Award today at 3 p.m. in the Volunteer Park.
“I feel very honored, but undeserv- BARRY VALENTINE ing,” Joanie said. “There are so many people here that have done a lot of work, too, and obviously there aren’t enough years to recognize everybody.” This isn’t the first time Don and Joanie have been recognized for their tireless work, either, as they received the Henry Kimberly Spirit of Leadership Award for the work they’ve done to make Oshkosh what it is. Barry, EAA Lifetime 151943, is a former FAA acting administrator who now volunteers with EAA’s Government Host team. Barry’s EAA work includes PHOTO BY SCOTT PELKOWSKI hosting important policymakers during their stays at AirVenture, including the prime minister of Malaysia as well as several influential American government employees. “I’m delighted that I’m being honored with the award,” Barry said. “Being an EAA volunteer has been one of my passions for a very long time. It is one of the things I look forward to every year, not just going to AirVenture but being involved with the Government Host committee. It’s a great, great group of people.” After nearly two decades of volunteering with and chairing the Government Host team, there’s no telling exactly how much of an impact Barry has had on EAA, but it’s likely been a large one. Alan, EAA Lifetime 60137, has been an EAA member since 1971. He’s served as president and in several other capacities at Chapter 272, continues to be active in fundraising efforts, provides maintenance and inspection services, and has flown more than 700 Young Eagles flights. “I feel humbled,” Alan said. “I don’t feel that I work any harder or anything than anybody else who volunteers down there. My AirVenture experience now is the volunteer effort. I will go to one of the night air shows, but the rest of it is I’m busy at KidVenture and all the other various chapter or Young Eagles activities that are going on.” Alan has volunteered at Oshkosh since 1971 and continues to do so, most recently at KidVenture. He donates at least 700 hours of his time each year to EAA in various different ways, all of them benefitting the organization and its members. All of this year’s Volunteer of the Year award recipients will be honored in the Volunteer Park Sunday, July 23, at 3 p.m.

TruTrak Vizion Now Allowed in Cessna Models EAA’s low-cost, safe equipment initiative moves forward BY MEGAN ESAU
EAA’S SUBSIDIARY, EAA STC LLC, was awarded a supplemental type certificate (STC) on July 20 that will allow the TruTrak Vizion autopilot system to be installed in Cessna models 172 and 177, as part of EAA’s initiative to bring more low-cost, safety-enhancing equipment to the market. This accomplishment came just 10 months after EAA announced its partnership with the avionics manufacturer and four months after the award of EAA’s STC for the Vizion’s installation kits in March. The safety benefits an autopilot can bring to a cockpit are immense. The Vizion in particular is a remodel and upgrade of TruTrak’s DigiFlight II autopilot with added safety features and a simplified user interface. It offers a track selector, altitude hold, vertical speed select, altitude select and pre-select, and is capable of following both simple and complex flight plans from almost any aviation GPS on the market. Safety features include a “straight-and-
level” button, which can recover the airplane to level flight from almost any attitude, and an optional bank angle protection that can be used while hand-flying to prevent the airplane from exceeding a designated angle of bank. TruTrak will sell its Vizion autopilots to the typecertificated market at outdoor Booth 174 and indoor Booth 3030 during AirVenture, July 24-30. The full
cost of the system, including the installation kit, will be $5,000. EAA’s LLC will sell the STC for $100 to members, and will begin taking and fulfilling orders no later than the week following the convention. “Having the STC issued and beginning deliveries of this system right around EAA AirVenture is just perfect,” said TruTrak CEO Andrew Barker. “EAA has been a wonderful partner in this process, and I couldn’t imagine a better place to announce the completion of this first STC. We are committed to continuing to work with EAA on adding more aircraft types. We have already begun working on the next installation designs, and look forward to offering those in the coming months.” EAA’s Cessna 172 STC demonstrator, which is fitted with the Vizion autopilot and the Dynon D10A flight display STC’d by EAA in 2016, will be on display at the Four Corners throughout the week of AirVenture.

AirVenture Cup Provides Purpose and Fun on Trip to Oshkosh BY TI WINDISCH
FOR THE 20TH consecutive year, AirVenture attendees who are feeling fast and furious can partake in the AirVenture Cup cross-country air race, which began Sunday, July 23 at 9 a.m. Eric Whyte, who founded the cup and set up the first race back in 1998, said this event answers the ever-important “third question” every homebuilder has. “The first thing every homebuilder wants to do is fly their airplane,” he said. “The second thing, from the day they build their airplane, they want to bring it to Oshkosh. After that, then what? The AirVenture Cup is the answer to that third question.” Eric said one of the best parts about the AVC is that it forces pilots to really learn their airplane, which gives them information that can benefit them during future flights. “Racers look at themselves, how well did they do their flight planning, how closely did they look at weather, how did they adjust for the wind, how well did they set their engine setting,” he said. “You have to really know your engine. It encourages participants to go out and become more proficient pilots, and as a result have more fun with their airplanes.” The field of racers this year is a varied group of around 100 aviation enthusiasts, with a group of roughly 40 participants who have 10 races under their belt, some brand-new participants, and others with just about every possible experience level in between. Accomplished pilots and former astronauts are just as welcome as new sport pilots in the AirVenture Cup. AirVenture Cup festivities began before the race. Racers had a media day and informal meetand-greet on Friday, and then an open house and Young Eagles day on Saturday when young people came out to see the racers and their airplanes before the race started. More than 250 youths have flown with racers in

a single day before the AirVenture Cup, but Eric said Young Eagles flights are just one form of community outreach the event provides. “We hold an open house where people can come see the airplanes, meet the pilots, learn about them, and come out to the airport,” he said. “It’s really important for general aviation. Some folks don’t even know there’s an airport in their town.” This year’s race started in Mount Vernon, Illinois, and goes to Wausau, Wisconsin. The finish line used to be in Oshkosh, but due to increased air traffic that correlates with the increasing popularity of AirVenture, it became too hectic to facilitate
an air race in addition to other attendee arrivals. Most racers make the hop, skip, and a jump from Wausau to Oshkosh together after the race is complete so that they can enjoy aviation’s family reunion for the next week. When asked to describe the AirVenture Cup to someone who had never flown it before, Eric said the most important part is having fun along the way, not gunning for first place. “The Reader’s Digest version of the cup is it’s the most fun you can have on your way to Oshkosh,” he said. “It’s a race, but it’s an experience. It’s three days of camaraderie, flying, and fun.”

While it’s a lot of work to fly in and camp together, the people make it worth it, Tony said. “It’s really about the people,” he said. “I had problems with my plane in Waupaca, and two people said I could use their plane to lead the flight,” he said. It wasn’t necessary, but the group has become good friends who are always willing to help however they can, he added. Tony said flying lead with his wife, Sandra, was the best birthday present he could receive. He’ll turn 75 on Monday. What is he looking forward to most? “Getting here next year and my 76th birthday,” he answered, laughing. BONANZAS Bonanzas to Oshkosh made its 28th annual trek to AirVenture, flying in from Rockford, Illinois. However, the flight didn’t go as planned. Originally scheduled to arrive in Oshkosh at 1 p.m., they still hadn’t left Rockford by 1:30 p.m. due to thunderstorms. The Bonanza flight began in 1990 when Wayne Collins and a few friends decided the only way to ensure camping together was to arrive together in formation. Elliott Schiffman took over the organization in 2001, and soon established a nationwide network of regional training sessions. Since 2007, Larry Gaines has organized the mass arrival, which arrived in Oshkosh around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Nine pilots made the first mass flight to Oshkosh in 1990. That number now averages more than 100 annually, and about 75 percent of the pilots come back year after year.
CESSNAS The third group, Cessnas to Oshkosh, arrived on the AirVenture grounds at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Leaving from Juneau, Wisconsin, the group had 49 aircraft registered and represented 31 states and two Canadian provinces. 2017 was their 12th mass flight into the AirVenture grounds. Gil Velez, of Jersey City, New Jersey, said 69 planes were registered for the mass fly-in, but many couldn’t make it to the staging area because of bad

weather. But Gil said he wouldn’t miss the mass arrival for anything. “In the beginning, I came to AirVenture because of my love for aviation,” he said. “But now I come back to see my friends.” Suzie Bowden, of Lenexa, Kansas, agreed. “I’ve made great friends here, and I look forward to seeing everyone each year. When we came by ourselves, we were just two people out of hundreds of thousands. But now, we’re in a family.”
Besides the people, Dan McCullough of Salt Lake City, Utah, said he enjoys the challenge of becoming a better pilot that comes with formation flying. Three more groups will fly in together today, including Piper J-3 Cubs, Cirruses, and Mooneys. The Mooneys are expected to be the last mass arrival at 11 a.m. after gathering in Madison, Wisconsin. This will be their 20th mass flight to Oshkosh.

VISITORS TO EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 will see many improvements on the convention grounds this year, including transportation changes and upgrades. For those driving in or seeking off-site transportation, three areas have been designated as official Uber and Lyft drop-off and pickup locations: the Super 8/Friar Tuck’s gate, the corner of Foundation Road and Gallatin Avenue near Gate 34, and the S Lot. On the grounds, trams and buses will now be referred to as shuttles, and new signs designate their stops. The Yellow Route running from Convention Headquarters to the Vintage area has been re-established, and the Red Route now extends into Homebuilt camping. A new shuttle stop was added on the Camp Scholler route near Gate 27. A new pedestrian path allows visitors to walk through the F Lot to alleviate overcrowding in the area of the Camp Scholler East Gate. Most shuttles will run July 24-29 6:30-11:30 and 6:306:00 on July 30, but a full schedule for each route can be found on the AirVenture webpage.

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 App Now Available Get around Oshkosh easier with the help of the app WITH THOUSANDS OF ATTRACTIONS, workshops, forums, and more happening during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017, even experienced Oshkosh attendees can use a little help getting around from time to time. The EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 app, presented by Textron Aviation, is the perfect helpful resource. The app, which was redesigned to be more user-friendly and is powered by Liveality, contains a full map of locations and a scheduling feature that allows users to create their own personal schedule by choosing from the more than 1,000 activities throughout the week of AirVenture. “We are really excited to share the
new EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 app with everyone,” Nicole Brown, EAA digital marketing associate, said. “With a new platform and a clean look, the app will have the most up-to-date AirVenture information available. We’ve worked hard to add enhanced features that make it easier for people to find exactly what they are looking for related to AirVenture.” Powered by Google Maps, the new map feature allows users to “favorite” any location to make it easier to find, and has built-in navigation to help Oshkosh attendees get where they want to go quickly and easily. The 800-plus exhibitors at Oshkosh this year are also listed on the
app, and they can be “favorited,” too, allowing users to organize a schedule of events they can review at any time under the My EAA icon. Additionally, the Services menu lets users see everything the EAA grounds have to offer during AirVenture. To help sort through the massive variety of events and activities that will take place this week, an Interests section of the app helps users see all the activities in a specific area of interest, whether it be Kids and Family, Veterans, Warbirds Fans, or another available option. A new search box will also help attendees looking for a specific area or attraction. Finally, the 2017 app includes new
screen modes. It can be difficult to read digital screens in certain outdoor conditions, but this feature allows users to change the app display to help with readability, whether it’s bright and sunny or dark, like during the night air show. Other new updates and features include an enhanced search, a food section containing menus, a social media picture stream and picturesharing functionality, and the ability to remember a parking spot so users don’t forget where they’ve parked. The free app is available in both the iTunes App Store and Google Play Store. For more information, visit www.EAA.org/app.

Emergency Aircraft Repair Celebrates 55th Anniversary BY TI WINDISCH
EVEN BEFORE EAA AirVenture took place in Oshkosh, the Emergency Aircraft Repair service has been helping pilots with technical difficulties in a variety of ways during the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration. Now located in the Emergency Aircraft Repair barn and staffed by EAA Chapter 75, the EAR crew attends to problems both large and small. Thankfully, there are mostly small rather than large issues with the aircraft on the grounds. More than 40 volunteers staffed the barn during AirVenture 2016, and more than 180 operations were conducted, meaning the staff attended to nearly 200 airplanes (and by extension, pilots) in need. The service that the Emergency Aircraft Repair pro-

vides depends on the problem, and on the type of aircraft. “Sometimes it’s simply answering questions, sometimes it’s directing them to an FBO, sometimes it’s assistance we can help them directly with if it’s a homebuilt or experimental,” Tom Shelton, EAR chairman, said. “Sometimes we can help people find parts. Sometimes
we tow airplanes to our area and offer them a place to park.” The emergency part of the Emergency Aircraft Repair comes from the most pressing task that the volunteers handle: pulling a damaged airplane off the runway when there’s no other way to move it and air traffic continues to flow. Fortunately, that isn’t a common occurrence, Tom said. “Sometimes there is a great deal of urgency involved,” he said. “Honestly, that’s a rarity. Most of the time, someone will walk up with a dead battery after leaving the power on or something similar to that.” Even if a problem isn’t a life-threatening one, it doesn’t mean Emergency Aircraft Repair doesn’t take it seriously. Trips to get parts repaired or to pick
up deliveries have taken the volunteers to Fond du Lac and even all the way to Milwaukee during the week, all on their own dime. The idea, initially developed in part through conversations with EAA Founder Paul Poberezny, is worth all of the work it takes to pull off each year. This is the 55th year the Emergency Aircraft Repair service has been at the fly-in convention, and the staff is celebrating that anniversary with ice cream throughout the week, and they are holding a special cake-cutting ceremony on Thursday, July 27, at 1 p.m. “It’s very interesting work,” Tom said. “We learn a lot, the people we help learn even a little bit more. It’s fun. It’s tiring, but we have a bit of rotation that keeps people fresh and keeps it fun.”

Welcome Wagon Four Is Ready for Any Weather Chapter 91’s hard work paid off BY TI WINDISCH
WHILE WORKING AS co-chairman of the Welcome Wagons at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016, Larry Young, EAA 169501, experienced something any grizzled AirVenture veteran has surely gone through — what he calls “the annual rain shower.” Not one to sit idly by when a problem arises, Larry thought about his desire to replace his 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, and he realized his old truck might make a perfect Welcome Wagon. “What went through my mind was that we needed it; we needed another Welcome Wagon up there, so I said to myself, ‘Let’s make something we can use with a roof and side curtains and all for when it’s raining,’” Larry said. “I brought my idea up to the chapter, and they were all for it.” With the Chapter 91 vote over and done with, it was time to get to work on turning Larry’s truck into the crème de la crème of the Welcome Wagon fleet. This was no mean feat, and it took the whole chapter to accomplish the project. Framework had to be assembled for the bed of the truck out of metal plate and tubing, which had to be sized and cut specifically for the project. There’s no kit on the market for turning a Chevy into a Welcome Wagon. Well, not yet at least. Woodwork had to be stained and finished, and bench seats had to be fabricated. A bed cover was transformed into the roof of the passenger compartment, a Sonex canopy was turned into a windscreen, and a beacon and stoplight were installed. Then, everything had to be made pretty with a coat of paint and all the right decals. Larry said work was just nearing completion on June 13, but Welcome Wagon Four is here at Oshkosh and helping make homebuilders happy for a few reasons. “It’ll make it easier because we’ll have four vehicles instead of three, so we’ll have more availability,” Larry said. “And it’ll be the one we can use when we get the annual rain, which we always get.” Larry talked about some of the other work Chapter 91 had done, and the 25 years he spent as president of the chapter before giving up that title in January. His approach to the work that had to be done — whether it involved the four huge hangars the chapter constructed or building the fourth Welcome Wagon — is a simple one. “Just making things happen is what I’ve been doing for the last 25 years,” he said. “It was a no-brainer; it’s just what I wanted to do.”

Paul and Audrey Poberezny Home Purchased by Aircraft Spruce Aircraft Spruce and Specialty Company and the Irwin Family recently closed on the purchase of the longtime home of Paul and Audrey Poberezny, located just south of the EAA Aviation Center and the AirVenture grounds. Aircraft Spruce officials plan to use the home as a tribute to EAA’s founding family, and made the 9-acre property available for tours during EAA AirVenture 2017. The house was Paul and Audrey’s home beginning in 1991, when they restored a century-old farmhouse that had fallen into disrepair. The property includes Paul’s personal office and workshop, as well as many artifacts and photos from the family’s aviation and EAA history. Visitors can walk through the meticulously sculpted grounds and tour Paul’s offices within the Annex, “West Wing,” and above his garage. Thousands of photos and memorabilia adorn the walls of each location, and capture the love of people, illustrating how much Paul valued relationships. When the purchase was announced, Aircraft Spruce officials noted that the company and the Poberezny family maintained a close relationship for more than 50 years, and that they are excited to have this opportunity to preserve the historic home and make it available for future use. Since the purchase, updates have been made to some of the non-public living areas in the house prior to opening it for tours and functions. EAA officials worked with Aircraft Spruce in recommending local contractors to ensure the culture established by the Poberezny family was maintained. Tours will be offered daily Monday through Sunday, July 24-30, at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., and 1 p.m. A limited number of visitors will be allowed on each tour to maintain the complete experience. Tickets are $5 each and may be purchased online at www.EAA.org/estate. Transportation will be provided from the AirVenture grounds as there is no public parking at the site.

Collegiate Volunteer Program Helps Inspire Students BY SAM OLESON
WITH THOUSANDS OF AIRPLANES, hundreds of exhibits, and countless people at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, it’s easy to overlook a number of programs. EAA’s Collegiate Volunteer Program is one that may not immediately grab attention, but it could be very important to the future of EAA and general aviation. With the goal of involving college students in the world of aviation and further inspiring students already on an aviation career path, the AirVenture Collegiate Volunteer Program is an important facet of EAA’s mission of promoting aviation to younger generations. “The purpose is really to engage college-aged students to learn about aviation and EAA,” said Cassie Bruss, EAA human resources business partner and manager of the volunteer program. “Some of them have an aviation background, some of them don’t. It’s a nice way to engage them and make it a group effort. This collegiate volunteer program really hits on the social aspect for those students, but we do more than just say, ‘Hey, come volunteer for us.’ It’s something they’re looking forward to.” This year, 108 registered collegiate volunteers will offer a hand during AirVenture in a variety of capacities. While the volunteers will be working hard throughout the day, they will gain a lot of experience and have some fun, too. That makes coming to Oshkosh very rewarding for many. “They definitely get a lot of hands-on experience,” EAA human resources intern Jenna Aman said. “We do have a certain list of areas that are looking to use collegiate volunteers, but they get to pick from the list — what they want to do, what hours they want to work. They have a lot of freedom. It’s a lot of responsibility because they do have to show up, they do have to be there. … And just being here for the week, if they volunteer 20 hours throughout the week, they get a weeklong wristband, so they can be here and see other things. If they volunteer 30 hours, they get complimentary camping. … They definitely get to do a lot of cool stuff.” Shawn White, a Western Michigan University student, volunteered for the first time at AirVenture last year and is back again for the 2017 celebration. Working primarily with flight simulators, Shawn had a great experience in 2016 and is glad to be back. “Meeting pilots from all over the world [was exciting, as was] learning firsthand about aviation opportunities that exist outside of the U.S.,” Shawn said. “Working at the Redbird sim was also very rewarding — coaching many people to their first ‘simulated’ landings and seeing their excitement afterwards.” Jake Berg, a Minnesota State University, Mankato student, had similar feelings about volunteering at AirVenture and said the experience opened his eyes to several aviation-related career opportunities. Like Shawn, Jake is excited to be back in Oshkosh for AirVenture and is hoping to build on what he learned in 2016. “I stumbled on the Collegiate Volunteer Program, and I was there for four or five days [last year],” Jake said. “It’s good to have on your résumé. I interviewed with Delta and some other airlines. … I made ties with people at AirVenture. It helped me spread out my knowledge of aviation. It was a huge learning chance.”

Repurposed Huey Helicopter Honors Vets Sculpture brings awareness to those with PTSD BY MEGAN ESAU
A REPURPOSED UH-1 HUEY helicopter that helps bring awareness to veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder will be on display through the week of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 on the Leeward Plaza behind EAA’s museum. The helicopter, Take Me Home Huey, is a mixed media sculpture built from the remnants of Huey No. 174, which saw combat with the U.S. Army 15th Medical Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, before it was shot down on Valentine’s Day 1969 while attempting to land on a rescue mission. After returning to the United States for repair, No. 174 served a number of roles, including flying in Korea during the 1980s and as a trainer in Alabama in the ’90s. After a crash in 1997, the Huey was sent to a scrapyard in Arizona, where it sat for a little more than 10 years before being rescued by Light Horse Legacy, a nonprofit that restores military helicopters to raise awareness of and provide healing for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. Light Horse Legacy partnered with artist Steve Maloney for the creation of Take Me Home Huey.
“The whole scheme is kind of designed to be what a soldier in Vietnam would think about when he wants to come home,” said Dave Barron, CEO of Light Horse Legacy. “Working from the back, the tail is his girlfriend, his car, apple pie. … Then all of the typeset that you see on the cabin are all the different units that flew Hueys in Vietnam. So guys come and it makes it really personal.” The graffiti overlaying the helicopter lists some of the nicknames of the squadrons that flew with UH-1s. Bags piled on top of the helicopter are Maloney’s representation of the hurried desire soldiers would feel when they saw a Huey to, “Get the hell out of here.” A look inside Take Me Home Huey reveals a number of suspended parts from No. 174 that weren’t able to be fully salvaged. “[Steve] went through them, and he made the artwork inside his view of the chaos of war and the destruction of war,” Dave said. Also inside is a time capsule, which has been collecting stories and memen-

tos from Take Me Home Huey’s travels and will be opened on April 30, 2025. A dedication for the helicopter was held upon its arrival at the museum in June, and attendee Steve Ruby, a Vietnam Battle of Ripcord veteran who served in the 101st Airborne, D Company 506th Infantry, shared the poignant memory that seeing No. 174 brought back.

Fairness for Pilots Act Expands on Pilot’s Bill of Rights 2 BY SEN. JAMES INHOFE
LAST JULY, third-class medical reform, the cornerstone of the Pilot’s Bill of Rights 2, was signed into law, and on May 1, 2017, those reforms officially took effect. These reforms have been a gamechanger for pilots across the country — and they would not have become law and fully implemented without the strong and consistent advocacy of the general aviation community. We cannot forget about the additional provisions of the Pilot’s Bill of Rights 2 that still need to be enacted. These provisions address many other injustices and challenges facing the general aviation community. Each year at Oshkosh, and at other aviation events around the country, I continue to hear directly from pilots about issues they face dealing with the federal bureaucracy. I am committed to enacting legislation to provide needed relief to airmen. Earlier this year, I introduced the Fair-
ness for Pilots Act (S. 755). This bill contains all the provisions of the Pilot’s Bill of Rights 2 that were left out of last year’s FAA bill. These provisions include enhanced due process for GA pilots by empowering them with the right to appeal an FAA decision through a new, merit-based trial in federal court. In this trial, the FAA bears the burden of proof, enshrining a pilot’s constitutional right of being considered innocent until proven guilty. The Fairness for Pilots Act increases transparency for airmen subject to an FAA enforcement action by requiring the FAA to share with an airman the specific activity that triggered the FAA investigation and provide specific documentation (such as Enforcement Investigative Reports) relevant to its investigation. Airmen should know why they are being investigated and have the appropriate documentation to prepare a proper defense so they can respond to the FAA from an informed
position. This transparency also extends to situations involving re-examination. The FAA would have to provide detailed information describing the basis for requesting the re-examination. The Fairness for Pilots Act also requires the FAA to designate a sole source repository for notices to airmen (NOTAMs) and certify their accuracy, while providing key information including the effective duration of temporary flight restrictions in NOTAMs. This is all to ensure pilot safety and easy access to all relevant information before flying. It gives airmen increased access to flight data, so that information is available for pilots to use in their defense during an enforcement action proceeding. Finally, my bill ensures the FAA has flexibility to resolve enforcement cases with warning notices or letters of correction at all stages of an investigation, preventing airmen from unnecessarily facing formal legal action in court.
The Fairness for Pilot’s Act was crafted with direct input from the general aviation community. In fact, this legislation is the genesis of forums I hosted at past EAA AirVenture Oshkosh fly-in conventions. I look forward to once again hearing your feedback on issues facing the general aviation community and what general aviation priorities can be best addressed legislatively. This is my 39th consecutive year attending Oshkosh, and I look forward to seeing you here!

Camping Brings EAA Chapters Together
YOUR VISION BEGINS HERE. THE ALL NEW G6
BY SAM OLESON
JIM O’BRIEN, PRESIDENT of EAA Chapter 1 in Riverside, California, has a simple explanation for why he and other members of his chapter have camped together at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh for the past few years: community. “Like [EAA founder] Paul [Poberezny] said, it’s the airplanes that get us together, but it’s the people that bring us back,” Jim explained. “It really makes for incredible social times and bonding, and just strengthens the whole experience.” Chapter 1 is just one of a number of EAA chapters that will be camping together in Camp Scholler this week. While everyone at Camp Scholler is primarily here for aviation-related activities during the week, Jim noted that camping in particular is an attractive aspect of this week for him and other chapter members. “In my opinion, camping at AirVenture is the other 50 percent of what AV is,” he said. “It would be like half the experience if I stayed off campus, because of the camaraderie and how everyone wants to tell their story. Laughter is attractive, and we have a lot of laughter coming from our area. It just adds to the experience.” Kirk Fjetland, president of Chapter 237 in Blaine, Minnesota, said members of his chapter have been camping together at AirVenture for many years. Last year, the chapter won the Oshkosh Chapter Grand Champion Award, which was based partially on the number of chapter members camping together at AirVenture, and 65 Chapter 237 members camped together in 2016. “Everybody is such good friends,” Kirk said. “We have such a great time. Everybody gets along with everybody. It keeps growing and growing and growing. We started out with four [camping] sites and jumped up to six. Last year we had 12, and this year we have 24. It’s just a fun aspect [of AirVenture] and the friendship aspect. The food doesn’t hurt. The three F’s for success: flying, food, and fun. It works really, really well.” On the other end of the spectrum, Wayne Brazinski, president of Chapter 461 in Bolingbrook, Illinois, is relatively new to the chapter camping experience. Since he took over as president a few years ago, Wayne has made efforts to grow the chapter and has increased membership from six or seven people to around 55. He sees camping together at Oshkosh as another way to improve his chapter, while hopefully inspiring younger generations to stay involved in aviation and EAA. “We’re trying to get the gang back together and get the younger ones in with the older ones,” Wayne said. “That’s another reason why we picked up five or six campsites. So really we’re just trying to build the culture back.”

NOW HIRING! EAA’S JOB FAIR
JULY 24-30 | 9 A.M. - 5 P.M. Whether you’re looking for a job in the exciting world of aviation, wondering what type of careers are available, or just looking for a professional change of pace, you’ll find what you’re looking for at EAA’s Job Fair.
Celebrating the Christen Eagle’s 40th THE CHRISTEN EAGLE II was introduced to the aviation world at EAA Oshkosh 1977. At AirVenture 2017, we’re celebrating the 40th anniversary of this awardwinning aerobatic biplane. Designer Frank Christensen, EAA Lifetime 36663 and president of Christen Industries, set the standard for kitbuilt aircraft with the precision and attention to detail that became the hallmark of the Eagle. Three purpose-built single-seat versions were flown by Charlie Hillard, Gene Soucy, and Tom Poberezny during their lengthy tenure as the Eagles Aerobatic Team. For the anniversary celebration, the International Aerobatic Club will highlight the history and the development of the Eagle in its pavilion on the AirVenture grounds. Six exhibit panels will tell the story of this iconic aerobatic and sport aircraft and the pilots who flew it. A forum on the Eagle will be held at the IAC pavilion on Tuesday, July 25, from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. Speakers will be Mark Ciagla and Lynn Ojala, owners and pilots of Eagle aircraft. Both are bringing their Eagles to AirVenture, and Lynn’s is being displayed at the Aviat exhibit. The IAC is also proud to announce that Frank Christensen has agreed to attend AirVenture and will be on-site at the end of the week. He will also be a guest at IAC’s gathering of members in the Nature Center on Friday, July 28, at 6:30 p.m.

Stones Needed for Memorial Wall Expansion
208/209
IN 1989, ANOTHER one of EAA Founder Paul Poberezny’s visions became a reality. Paul desired to create a place on EAA’s grounds where family and friends could remember and honor their loved ones in quiet dignity. Located along the edges of Pioneer Airport and adjacent to the Fergus Chapel, the Memorial Wall provides a peaceful place to pay respect to those who have gone west. At EAA Oshkosh 1989, the Memorial Wall was dedicated and the first ceremony was held. Over the past 28 years, EAA and loved ones have honored more than 2,000 individuals who had a passion for aviation. We are grateful to have these tributes as part of EAA’s history and to offer a place where the legacy of passionate aviation enthusiasts and pilots is carried on forever. Now, the time has come to expand this beautiful area to ensure families and friends will continue to have a place to honor those who have gone before them. As with the original construction, EAA invites members and chapters around the world to bring stones from your geographic locations. The stones will create a centerpiece of this expanded area and represent what EAA is, a passionate community where lifelong friends are made who continue to support one another. As Paul once put it, “EAA’s progress over the years is, first of all, a story of people.” Construction is slated to begin the fall of 2018 with the new updates ready for the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2019 Memorial Wall ceremony. Stones may be left at the chapel area in the labeled bins during AirVenture 2017 and 2018, and should range in size between a softball and a volleyball.

AirVenture Gets a Facelift With Ground Improvements BY TI WINDISCH
AS PART OF EAA’s ongoing attempt to make AirVenture as accommodating as possible for hundreds of thousands of visitors, several changes have been made to the 2017 Oshkosh grounds. “Every year, we look to make improvements on the grounds that will benefit EAA members and AirVenture attendees, and make their Oshkosh experience even better,” said Steve Taylor, EAA’s director of facilities. “Many of the ideas come from those who have attended in past years, and we incorporate that feedback into our planning. We can’t get to every idea every year, but include as many as time and budget will allow each year.” The Blue Barn is one new addition. It serves as a home base for events such as chapter forums and meet-andgreets, and can be found across from the Forums Plaza, adjacent to Aviation Gateway Park. The Warbirds in Review area has undergone some changes since last year. Audience space has been expanded, and a Quonset hut will provide additional staging and support for various presenters. A new social pavilion will be present
in the Homebuilts area. Ace’s Bistro is now the Tailwind Café, and it has a covered pavilion for improved attendee seating.
Attendees who enjoy the Activities Center and Craft Tent — and who stay in Camp Scholler — will be pleased, as the center has moved from the Home-

builts area to a new location between the Fly Market and Hangar D, which is a closer location for patrons coming from Camp Scholler. GES Services has also moved from the west side of Hangar D to the Vintage and Ultralights entrance for improved UPS and FedEx delivery. A service center outside of Hangar A will be available for attendees to pick up mail. A new judging facility is in Vintage this year, along with a charging station where visitors can drop off electronic devices for charging. Both the flightline and Theater in the Woods have improved audio systems, and Theater in the Woods also has a new ramp for increased accessibility. The tram service is no more, as the shuttle service replaced both the trams and buses that ferry attendees around the AirVenture grounds. Finally, all grocery needs are being fulfilled by stores on the grounds operated by EAA. In the past, these stores were run by outside vendors. Additionally, the VAA Red Barn will feature some improvements for better traffic flow throughout the week.

Fly Into the EAA Fly-In Theater for Blockbuster Features, Classic Aviation Films FORD MOTOR COMPANY presents its 11th consecutive year of Hollywood’s best aviation-themed blockbusters and classics, introduced by incredible presenters, at the EAA Fly-In Theater during AirVenture Oshkosh 2017, providing a relaxing evening under the stars to end each fun-filled day. “We’re glad to have each and every one of our presenters at the Fly-In Theater this year for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh,” said Rick Larsen, EAA vice president of communities and member programs. “Their unique perspectives and insights will create an experience that moviegoers cannot find anywhere else.” The Fly-In Theater is located at the north end of Doolittle Drive, behind the Camp Store. Films are shown each night, beginning Sunday at 8:30 p.m. Shows will begin at 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and Saturday nights. On Sunday, July 23, both Flying the Feathered Edge and Mission Control: The Unsung Heroes of Apollo will be shown. Kim Furst, who directed Flying the Feath-
ered Edge, and Todd “Leif” Ericson, president of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots, will present that film. Gareth Dodds and David Fairhead, who produced and directed, respectively, Mission Control, will present that film. The next night brings Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation to the Fly-In Theater, and with it Clay McConnell, vice president of communications at Airbus, to present it Monday evening. At one point in the film, Tom Cruise hangs off an A400M, and that same model of airplane will be in Oshkosh on Wednesday for attendees to see up close. Sully will be shown on Tuesday night,
with an introduction from Jeff Skiles, who sat in the right seat for Chesley Sullenberger’s famous landing in the Hudson. Along with Jeff, EAA CEO and Chairman of the Board Jack J. Pelton and Ford Motor Company Board of Director’s member Edsel B. Ford II will partake in the presentation. As part of the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid, Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo will be shown Wednesday night. The presenters for that film are Jimmy Doolittle’s grandchildren, Jonna Doolittle and Jimmy Doolittle III. Thursday evening brings one of the most-anticipated films to the Fly-In Theater: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. John Knoll, visual effects supervisor and executive producer at Lucas Films, will present Rogue One. John’s résumé is impressive and lengthy. In addition to his work on Rogue One, John has also been the visual effects supervisor for Pacific Rim, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Avatar, three Pi-
rates of the Caribbean movies, Star Wars: Episode III, Star Wars: Episode II, Star Wars: Episode I, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Generations, and Mission: Impossible, among other hit films. Hidden Figures will be shown on Friday. This film, based on a true story of the African-American female mathematicians who helped make Project Mercury and other NASA missions possible, will be presented by NASA’s Chief Historian Bill Barry. Finally, on Saturday night, viewers will be treated to Strategic Air Command, but not before an introduction from crew members of the B-1 Lancer and B-52 Stratofortress bombers, which will be on static display during the week of AirVenture. The Fly-In Theater has been an EAA AirVenture tradition and continues to grow in popularity each year. The environment is reminiscent of drive-in theaters of the past and features an open-air, five-story high projection screen. Admission is free, as is the popcorn, so bring your blankets or chairs to relax and enjoy the show.

A NEW GARMIN datalink device called GDL 82 will provide a way for pilots and airplane owners to ensure they meet FAA standards for ADS-B “out” requirements. The GDL 82 is not yet available, but Garmin anticipates it being for sale by the end of the year. Installation of the GDL 82 is quick thanks to a patent-pending installation design that works with the aircraft panel, not against it. More information on the GDL 82 can be found at the Garmin exhibit in the Main Aircraft Display.

Grocery Locations Expand with New Red One Market BY BRIANNA DAVIS
EAA HAS EXPANDED grocery services for campers and visitors attending EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017. Four grocery locations, known as Red One Markets, now provide greater convenience and service. Red One Market locations are operated by EAA and offer a greater variety of products at prices more comparable to local grocery and convenience stores. The additional market locations make it easier for visitors to get what they need conveniently, so they don’t have to leave the grounds and miss any show action. Proceeds from Red One Markets will support EAA programs. “EAA-operated markets offer many benefits including a wider variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, local dairy and meat products, camping supplies,
and low prices,” said Nancy Tribble, director of retail operations. “As always, many upgrades come from ideas forwarded by AirVenture volunteers and attendees. To further accommodate visitors, grocery outlets opened earlier than in past years and offer camping supplies such as chairs, tent stakes, towels, and
ice. Red One Market grocery outlets also feature local dairy and meat suppliers, hot coffee and fresh doughnuts offered daily, quick meals, frozen pizzas, breakfast sandwiches, and yogurt parfaits. AirVenture merchandise is also available for purchase. Cold beer and wine are for sale at the Camp Scholler locations.

Get the RV-12 Grin With an EAA 2017 Sweepstakes Win BY KATIE HOLLIDAY-GREENLEY
IN 1968, THE first official EAA Sweepstakes aircraft, a Piper J-3 Cub, was raffled off beginning a tradition that has continued for nearly 50 years. This year, the EAA Sweepstakes winner will receive an aircraft that honors the organization’s homebuilding roots: a Van’s RV-12. The RV-12, donated to EAA by Van’s Aircraft, is a two-seat S-LSA powered by a Rotax 912 ULS. And, with a range of approximately 600 miles, it’s the perfect aircraft for quick weekend hops. It also features lightweight, removable wings for easy storage and trailering. Van’s Aircraft primarily produces kit aircraft, but with the RV-12 the company tested the idea of a ready-to-fly aircraft. In 2013, Van’s worked with Synergy Air to have a small batch of the aircraft assembled and certified as special light-sport aircraft. The Sweepstakes RV-12 was assembled by Synergy Air in Eugene, Oregon, and was painted a Tahoe Blue paint scheme before being delivered to Oshkosh in March by former Young Eagles Co-chairman Jeff Skiles. The EAA Sweepstakes program started when EAA Chapter 22 purchased a Continental 85-hp engine in 1963 to raffle off during the 11th EAA fly-in convention in Rockford, Illinois. The chapter raised $1,200, which was donated to the EAA Museum in Hales Corners, Wisconsin. The chapter continues to play an important role in the sweepstakes each year, staffing the EAA Sweepstakes booth and taking entry coupons and donations. The EAA Sweepstakes is one of the longest-running airplane giveaways in the world. Cash donations for sweepstakes entries support EAA’s education programs. For more information on all of the prizes offered as part of this year’s sweepstakes, visit www.EAA.org/sweepstakes or stop by the EAA Sweepstakes booth where the aircraft will be on display throughout EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017. A second-place prize will also be awarded: an EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 package, including weekly admission, flight experiences, and a lifetime membership. *No purchase or donation necessary. A purchase or donation will not improve your chances of winning. The sweepstakes and all entries are governed by the 2017 Sweepstakes Official Rules available at www.EAA.org/ sweepstakes. Winner is responsible for all applicable taxes.

Unique Warbird Experiences at AirVenture 2017
13TH ANNUAL
BY FREDERICK A. JOHNSEN
Saturday, July 29
EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2017 | 7 a.m.
SOME CALL EAA AirVenture 2017 the “Year of the Bomber.” And with good reason: You can expect to see the world’s only flying World War II B-29 Superfortresses — both of them — at Oshkosh this year. There’s a scarce Douglas A-20 Havoc attack bomber on the field now, and a squadron of B-25s will soon descend on Wittman Regional Airport to honor the 75th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo. And, the mighty U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress is here for only its second visit ever, parked on Boeing Plaza. Fighter fans will not be disappointed, either, as four rare Bell P-63 Kingcobras may convene at Oshkosh, and fly in a formation not seen since World War II. The warbird experience at Oshkosh is about more than just the machines. It’s a visceral, emotional glimpse into the heroics of previous generations. Warbird parking crew members have devised a way to park 14 to 16 twin-engine B-25 Mitchell bombers in the same, tightly nested way they crowded the deck of the USS Hornet aircraft carrier in April 1942 before launching the first strike over Japan. The spectacle of so many bombers packed together will be a quiet testimony to the dangers the Doolittle Raiders faced on their mission. New to the Warbirds area this year is a Quonset hut beside the Warbirds in Review ramp. The gift of Ron and Diane Fagen of the Fagen Fighters WWII Museum, the tin building’s exterior is a dead-ringer for a World War II briefing building with period signage and landscaping, down to a line of white, painted rocks that GIs would have been tasked to keep bright.
Experience what becomes the world’s busiest airport from a unique perspective! This fun walk/run starts at the Ultralight Barn and takes you through a tour of the AirVenture campus. Proceeds from this year’s run benefit the EAA Collegiate Volunteer Program, helping students gain the volunteer and job experience they need to succeed after college.

Sunday, July 23, 2017 Inside, the building is a modern air-conditioned oasis where warbird presenters can prepare for their Warbirds in Review sessions. Connie Bowlin, EAA Warbirds of America president, says the structure enhances the Warbirds in Review productions by housing a state-of-the-art audiovisual suite used to produce livestream video of the Warbirds in Review sessions. That’s when historic warbirds and their crews are highlighted in an interview with moderator David Hartmann, whose familiarity with aviation and aviators, coupled with his easygoing presentation style, makes the audience feel like they are informally chatting with great flyers of military aircraft. There’s another treat in the Warbirds area this year, where a brandnew warbird flight simulator will get a daily workout. Whether your tastes lean toward flying the simulator, simply listening to the amazing stories of warbird flyers, or walking among rows of famous and rare military aircraft from the past, the Warbirds area at EAA AirVenture 2017 is filled with sights and sounds that should not be missed.

Adrian, who was the 2016 FAA National Maintenance Technician of the Year, bought the Bonanza in 1988 and has completely rebuilt it over the years, doing most of the work himself. The effort included a completely rebuilt engine, a specially modified large cargo door, and a custom-designed avionics panel with automatic dependent surveillance–broadcast (ADS-B) “out” and “in,” because of its safety benefits. “My passion in life is flying,” said Adrian, who is also an airframe and powerplant mechanic, and served as an engineer in the Army Corps of Engineers. Before signing on with JetBlue about 10 years ago, Adrian served as a pilot for the FAA, NASA, General Dynamics, and the Washington Redskins. He loves flying the Airbus A320 for JetBlue as much as he loves flying his personal aircraft. Early in 2016, he completed a solo around-the-world trip in his Bonanza — a five-week, 163-hour voyage of more than 23,000 nm made possible by rigorous planning, reliable avionics with plenty of redundancy, and lots of help from friends. The longest leg, Honolulu to Oakland, took about 17 hours and was made possible by his tip-tank modification, giving him 200 more gallons of fuel. He overcame several challenges along the way: a nonfunctioning autopilot during one of the longest legs, a headset that did not work on one leg, and $26 per gallon fuel in the United Arab Emirates — plus a $1,000 “handling” fee in Dubai. The flight was something he wanted to do for a long time. “You have things you want to do? Go do them,” Adrian said. Speaking of getting things accomplished, Adrian urges his fellow pilots to equip with ADS-B as soon as possible. “I looked at the capability of the L3
Lynx NGT-9000 ADS-B unit and realized I could get continuous subscription-free weather,” he said. “That’s unprecedented in a [general aviation] aircraft. Even though weather is available through Stratus on an iPad, having this subscription-free service and all the other products that are offered with ADS-B ‘out’ and ‘in’ — that’s priceless.” The touchscreen Lynx NGT-9000 offers four models, each with a complete ADS-B package. The Lynx NGT-9000 series provide 1090ES (Mode S extended squitter) ADS-B “out” as well as 1090 MHz and 978 MHz (UAT) ADS-B “in.” This gives the pilot ADS-B traffic including automatic dependent surveillance–rebroadcast, a client-based service that relays ADS-B information transmitted by an aircraft broadcasting on one link to aircraft equipped with ADS-B “in” on the other link. The Lynx also has traffic information services– broadcast and flight information services–broadcast input. The weather display includes METARs, AIRMETs, SIGMETs and NextGen weather radar information overlaid on a moving map. The unit also displays winds aloft, temperatures aloft, NOTAMs, and TFRs. “The quality of the graphic display on
the ADS-B unit is amazing,” Adrian said. “It’s full-color and very easy to read. Like most avionics on a general aviation aircraft, it’s small because of the limited panel space. But with Bluetooth, I can put the display on my iPad.” PHOTO BY ED HICKS Adrian is adamant that pilots should equip with the optional added benefits of ADS-B “in.” “The ADS-B products enhance safety to the greatest degree I’ve seen since I started flying in the 1980s, not just the weather display you are given but the picture of traffic in the area, especially flying in and out of airports without radar,” he said. “For those pilots who only have ADS-B ‘out’ and not ‘in,’ they are really missing out.” If pilots are waiting to install ADS-B because they think that the cost will come down any lower than it already is, he said that will probably not be the case. Adrian added that repair stations have become quite proficient with ADS-B installations, which minimizes aircraft downtime. “Flying a general aviation airplane comes with a cost,” Adrian said. “You can’t put a price on safety. The cost of ADS-B is very reasonable for what you get. I personally would not wait. It’s making the entire national airspace system safer.”

Volunteers Find Homes-Away-From-Home at the Volunteer Center BY TI WINDISCH
AS MORE THAN 5,000 VOLUNTEERS make EAA AirVenture Oshkosh into the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration each year, it makes sense that a central location coordinates and recruits the volunteer ranks. The Volunteer Center is just that. Located on Schaick Road, near Red One Market Central and the volunteer kitchen, the Volunteer Center is important when it comes to gathering and organizing the volunteers who are a part of AirVenture. “Not only is it a great location to recruit volunteers, but it also serves as a resource for those who already want to volunteer,” David Leiting, EAA chapter outreach specialist, said. “Folks can stop by and find the perfect volunteer opportunity that fits their skill set. In addition, it is a great location to get any questions answered that pertain to volunteering during AirVenture.” Areas in need of volunteers can post any and all openings to a conveniently-located whiteboard in front of the Volunteer Center, so prospective volunteers know where they can find a homeaway-from-home during the convention. Like many of the invaluable resources at Oshkosh, the Volunteer Center is, in fact, run by vol-
unteers. Judy Knight, EAA 1160817 and chairman of the Volunteer Center, said she works with each area of the grounds to ensure they have enough staff on a daily basis. “Anytime the EAA staff or other chairmen of the various areas on the field need volunteers, we try to fill their needs,” Judy said. “I don’t always have exactly the same jobs, but I do know certain areas, such as Operation Thirst, always need volunteers.” Often, people find out they need additional help with very little time to spare. Judy and the other volunteers at the Volunteer Center are there to make sure everything keeps running smoothly. “Sometimes it’s last-minute things,” Judy said. “‘My people didn’t show up for today, can you help us out?’ We just try to fill in the gaps.” Anyone interested in volunteering, or simply learning more about how to volunteer at AirVenture, can head over to the Volunteer Center to gather the information they need to get involved. “Were open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and if you want to meet new people and help out, come on down to the Volunteer Center,” Judy said.

New Food Options at AirVenture 2017 More than you thought BY MIKE DIFRISCO
HOW DO YOU feed more than 500,000 people two or more meals a day over a seven-plus-day period and provide enough variety and locations, and be sensitive to dietary needs while keeping the price/value equation in check? The answer: Lots of locations and a wide variety of food options. There are more than 40 food outlets all around the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh grounds. These include: • 27 food concession locations operated by 15 unique vendors. • 10 Lemon Chill carts. • 5 soda and water carts operated by local nonprofit organizations, such as the YMCA, Kiwanis, and JDRF, with portions of sales going to benefit these causes. • 1 snack concession stand for the Ford Fly-In Theater operated by the Town of Nekimi Fire Department, with portions of sales benefitting its operations.
EAA strives to ensure guests are receiving value for prices paid in the food and beverage program. One criteria for selecting vendor-partners is their experience in, and knowledge of, the food industry at festivals, air shows, or any large-scale events to ensure EAA remains competitive. Many of the prices for menu items are at or below regular value at other shows the size of AirVenture. EAA works with the vendors each year to ensure the variety of available food will cater to everyone’s needs. For example, there are more vegetarian and gluten-free options than ever before at many concession locations. Look for the vegetarian and glutenfree icons on select menus scattered throughout the AirVenture grounds. Those with restricted diets can enjoy these new, expanded options.
Overall, there is a wide variety of food options on the AirVenture grounds. You can get anything from a sugar doughnut to coconut shrimp, and practically anything in between. Other options include ice cream, jambalaya, a Wisconsin-style fish fry, hearty breakfasts, pizza, brats, turkey burgers, and international flavors. Watch for nightly specials at Tailwind Café (formerly Ace’s Café); you can stop by each evening and try something different. EAA members save with Member Meals — special, bundled options priced for members only — which are available at all food outlets. Our attendees spoke, and
we listened. EAA staff and vendorpartners have worked diligently to provide EAA members and AirVenture visitors with food and beverage options that will make everyone’s Oshkosh experience a memorable one. Come hungry!
