Mass Arrivals Finally Make it to Oshkosh

The Magic of Opening Day Welcome to EAA AirVenture 2018

THE TERM OPENING day has special meaning to people in many areas. For baseball fans, of course, and for those who have a favorite golf course as well, or a special, seasonal place in your hometown.

Here at Oshkosh, opening day is that moment when a full year of planning and potential becomes real. The world has arrived at Wittman Regional Airport, ready for the memories and highlights that will come over the next seven days. Each of us steps onto these grounds with our own plans and expectations. I hope you find them all to have positive outcomes this year.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen our aviation city take shape as the tents arose, the campground opened, and the volunteers arrived. Those volunteers — some 5,000-plus strong — make this event possible.

You’ll see them throughout the grounds in their volunteer T-shirts and in jackets covered with Oshkosh

patches. They’ve already put in long hours of work, but a full week still lies ahead of them.

Thank you to all of you who devote your time, whether it’s two hours or two months, to making our fly-in a success and known around the world.

Each year, AirVenture writes its own story. As we stand here on opening day, we don’t fully know what that story will be. But over the next seven days, an unforgettable tale will be written of people and aircraft in a way that is not found anywhere else on the planet. That is, indeed, something special.

I look forward to sharing it with you.

The largest of the scattered group — 120 planes from Fond du Lac plus three who later joined them — made it to Oshkosh on their second attempt, landing at about 6:45 p.m. Saturday. By Sunday morning, Gaines said 148 of the 149 aircraft had arrived, and possibly all 149.

Gaines said the group plans for emergencies like this. “When something like this happens, you just do the best you can,” he said. “But on the plus side, we got to see how hard flight ops works to keep pilots safe.”

The weather didn’t just delay the Bonanzas mass flight. About the same time some of the Bonanzas finally arrived, so did the Cessna group, Cessnas 2 Oshkosh (C2O), which landed interspersed with some of the Bonanzas. This is C2O’s 13th group arrival to Oshkosh after staging at the Dodge County Airport. A gaggle of Mooneys also eventually made it to the AirVenture grounds, despite the weather, although most came in one-by-one versus the planned caravan.

This is the 21st year of the Mooney Caravan.

But about 10 miles out from Oshkosh, those plans fell apart. The group was diverted as a storm system came through, said B2Osh leader Larry Gaines. The vast majority — 120 — landed at the Fond du Lac County Airport, while 24 landed at the Dodge County Airport near Juneau. The remainder went to a private airport near Fond du Lac, the Dane County Airport in Madison, and a few even flew the normal Fisk arrival, arriving in Oshkosh well before the rest.

Gaines said he was very grateful for technology and their mass texting service. “After we landed, I put out a text that said, ‘If you are not in Fond du Lac, text me where you are,’” he said. “Within 10 minutes of landing, I knew where everyone was and that they were all safe.”

WWI PAGE 1 “In the four-year stretch of World War I, aviation technology and piloting made strides that have been rarely matched in the history of flight,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. “A century later, aviation enthusiasts still marvel at the determination, ingenuity, and skill of those who designed, built, and flew these aircraft. They were making history in a field of engineering that mostly did not exist just 15 years earlier.”

Indeed, the armistice marking the end of the Great War on November 11, 1918, also signaled the end of aviation’s first era of great advances, dovetailing with its next phase of development exemplified by the RAF’s birth.

The featured aircraft, on display at the Vintage area, include four biplane fighters from Kermit Weeks’ Fantasy of Flight collection. Representing Germany’s air might are a Fokker D.VII and an Albatross D.III; and from the Allied Forces a Sopwith Pup, as well as a Sopwith 7F.1 Snipe that Weeks will fly in the celebration’s aerial demonstrations.

The Albatross D.III was flown by many German aces, including Baron Manfred von Richthofen and Kurt Wolff. The Fokker D.VIIs, under the terms of the armistice, all had to be surrendered to the Allies, and many of them served in the service of other nations in following years.

Also on hand are replicas of a British S.E.5.a — sometimes called “the

Spitfire of World War I” — and a Sopwith Camel re-created by Ohio’s Genius Garage, and a vintage U.S.-built DH.4, the two-place British biplane bomber. It ’s noteworthy that as Oshkosh also celebrates the Year of the Tanker at this year’s fly-in, the DH.4 was used for aerial refueling, providing two reasons for honoring the aircraft.

The DH.4 was also the first aircraft used by the U.S. Postal Service for airmail delivery, a service that is coincidentally also marking its 100th anniversary this year.

Meanwhile, a Sopwith Camel piloted by Canadian Arthur Brown was initially credited with shooting down Richthofen, though it was subsequently determined his life was almost certainly claimed by a bullet fired from the ground.

Also from the Fantasy of Flight collection is a rare 1915 Blériot replica in Royal Flying Corps colors.

On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday the aircraft will perform in aerial demonstrations at the ultralight field (rows P4 and P5) from 8 to 8:20 p.m.

Additionally, daily static engine runs will give visitors a real appreciation of the powerplants of the era, including the vintage Daimler engine that powers the Albatross. In addition, WWI-era aircraft, aircraft owners, and historians will participate in forums and Vintage in Review sessions throughout the week. A number of the aircraft will also be displayed on Boeing Plaza during the week.

COMMEMORATING 100 YEARS OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE The U.K.’s Royal Air Force (RAF) was born in the smoldering final act of World War I, the “war to end all wars.” Military aviation had existed in the U.K. since 1911, but the RAF, formed by the consolidation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service, didn’t come into existence until April of 1918.

The RAF centennial will be commemorated during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 with historic aircraft, flyovers, and special programming. The RAF’s 100th anniversary will be celebrated throughout the week, with a primary focus on the centennial this evening and tomorrow.

Programming at EAA’s Theater in the Woods, sponsored by M&M’s, will commemorate the RAF centennial tonight at 8 p.m. The Airbus Fly-In Theater will also host the North American premiere of the feature documentary film Spitfire starting at 8:30 p.m.

As we celebrate the centennial in honor of one of our nation’s closest allies, we salute the Royal Air Force and its first 100 years of proud and honorable service, just as we do all of our veterans — not just at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018, but all year long.

NFL PLAYER GETS INVOLVED AS YOUNG EAGLES CO-CHAIRMAN PRO BOWL TIGHT END Jimmy Graham, who earlier this year signed with the Green Bay Packers, will get involved with EAA’s Young Eagles program that aims to inspire the next generation of aviators.

Graham will be flying with Young Eagles Chairman Sean D. Tucker this afternoon in a flight that includes Young Eagles. Graham is an avid pilot who earned his private pilot

certificate in 2012 and has since added instrument, seaplane, multiengine, and helicopter ratings. He played with the New Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks prior to signing with the Packers last spring.

Graham has caught 556 passes and 69 touchdowns in his eight-year NFL career.

The Young Eagles program recently surpassed 2.1 million young people

flown, making it the largest youth aviation education program ever created.

That has been possible through the volunteer efforts of 50,000 EAA-member volunteer pilots and an equal number of ground support volunteers.

Tucker has been Young Eagles chairman since 2013, becoming the sixth chairman of the program. He has

brought Young Eagles to cities across America during his annual air show schedule, introducing young people to flight in a unique way.

Small Town Boy Plays AirVenture

Dustin Lynch, Maddie & Tae add double star power to opening concert FOR THE FIRST time, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh will have twice the star power for its traditional opening night concert, as country stars Dustin Lynch and Maddie & Tae kick off the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration with a post-air show concert tonight.

For the past 13 years, the openingnight concert on Boeing Plaza sponsored

by Ford Motor Company has provided a rousing start to the weeklong celebration of flight at Oshkosh. This year’s concert begins with Maddie & Tae at 6 p.m., followed by Dustin Lynch at 7:15 p.m.

“We’ve had legendary performers at our opening night concert in past years, and even some that have brought opening acts, but we’ve never had two current hitmakers here on the same night to open our week of aviation excitement and fun,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. “These artists are both reaching the top of the country charts today and are a great addition to what’s become a memorable opening night at AirVenture.”

Dustin Lynch, a native of Tullahoma, Tennessee — home of EAA Chapter 458 — already has five No. 1 singles under his

belt. His song “Cowboys and Angels” was nominated for Single of the Year, and in April, his four-week No. 1 song “Small Town Boy” earned Lynch his first Billboard Music Awards nomination for Top Country Song. His current album, Current Mood, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Albums chart in September 2017.

Maddie & Tae, Madison Marlow and Taylor Dye, met as aspiring singers in Dallas. Since 2014, the two women have earned a No. 1 single — “Girl in a Country Song” — and a platinum album titled Start Here. Maddie & Tae have also been nominated for numerous awards from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. In 2017, the duo was named in the Forbes magazine “30 Under 30” list.

Pelton, EAA CEO and chairman of the board, said EAA decided to again build a plane, dubbed the One Week Wonder, to ensure people understand that building an airplane is achievable. “Doing it in a week is a bit of grandstanding, but it really makes the point … that building an airplane is a phenomenon that can be done by anyone.”

This time, the airplane will be a Van’s RV-12iS. Charlie Becker, EAA’s director of chapters and communities & homebuilt community manager, said it will take the entire week to construct the plane, with people working on it daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or even longer, if needed. He hopes thousands of people will stop by to pull a rivet or help in some other way, and then become inspired knowing they had some part in its assembly.

The RV-12iS is being constructed at EAA’s Four Corners, located at the intersection of Knapp Street and Celebration Way. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 7:45 a.m. today, with the build officially beginning at 8 a.m. Jack said the project couldn’t happen without the support of companies like Van’s Aircraft, Garmin, Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co., and Rotax.

It takes a lot of volunteers to oversee a project of such magnitude. Charlie said five Van’s Aircraft employees will be on the grounds to oversee the build, and 100 core volunteers will guide the project along, with another 60 volunteers working with the public to teach them how to pull a rivet or answer questions.

Jack acknowledged that it’s challenging to build a plane in a week, but said you can feel the excitement of watching it come together. A well-designed kit airplane is truly made for the amateur to build, Charlie added.

“There is a large safety margin built in,” Charlie said. “Of course, you still must be diligent in building,” he added, but current technology makes skill methods available to just about anyone.

“For instance, I can teach someone how to pull a rivet in about one minute,” Charlie said. “A lot of people might perceive that it’s difficult to build an airplane. Yes, it is a big undertaking, but it really is within the grasp of anyone who has the DIY spirit.”

EAA will provide around-the-clock webcam coverage of the build.

The first plane built by AirVenture visitors in a week was a Zenith CH 750, built in 2014. After spending about 18 months taking it to chapters across the country to show off the work of members, the airplane is now used by EAA’s flying club, Jack said. EAA plans to do the same with the RV-12iS, he said.

“This really represents the innovative, can-do spirit of EAA members through all these years,” Jack said. “Our members don’t put limitations on what is possible.

Instead, they set a goal, believe it can be done, and then it happens.”

Pilot, Venom jet lost in accident ONE PERSON WAS killed and two were injured late Friday afternoon when a vintage de Havilland DH 112 Venom fighter jet crashed in a farm complex shortly after taking off from the Sheboygan County Memorial Airport, along Lake Michigan southeast of Oshkosh.

The pilot, 50-year-old Martin Tibbitts of Grosse Point, Michigan, was flying the jet and was the lone occupant of the aircraft. Tibbitts was the president of the World Heritage Air Museum in Detroit, which features British jets from the 1950s through the 1970s.

According to the Sheboygan County

Sheriff’s Department, Tibbitts was killed upon impact when the aircraft struck the ground on a farm near the airport. The jet then struck a farm building, injuring two workers and resulting in a fire that killed an estimated 40 to 50 cows. The NTSB and FAA are continuing to investigate the accident.

We at EAA were saddened to hear of the loss of life and injury that occurred in that accident. Our thoughts are with those involved and their families.

StartSticks Donated to Support AirVenture, EAA

MID-CONTINENT INSTRUMENTS and Avionics donated roughly half a dozen StartStick ground power units to EAA to support both EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 and EAA’s year-round ventures.

David Copeland, Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics director of sales, said that the donation is intended to fulfil several goals at once.

“There’s three things: One, we want to keep people flying,” David, EAA 702331, said. “No. 2, we want to help the Young Eagles in their great adventure for helping people get educated about aviation. And then the other one is we just want to tell people about this great unit that is very proven and uses lithium-ion technology and cell technology.”

The donated StartSticks will go to Emergency Aircraft Repair, a facility staffed by volunteers from EAA Chapter 75 during AirVenture, the Kermit Weeks Hangar: EAA Flight Research Center, and

Thursday’s The Gathering to be auctioned in support of EAA’s mission of spreading The Spirit of Aviation.

David came up with the idea when he ran into EAA CEO and Chairman of the Board Jack J. Pelton at AERO Friedrichshafen 2018 in Germany, and when David reached out Jack said he was excited about the initiative.

“David and I were talking about it, and he made the very generous offer of saying, ‘Hey, could you guys use some of these during AirVenture on the field?’” Jack explained. “I said, ‘That’s fantastic.’ I was very appreciative.”

VISITORS TO EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 may catch a glimpse of a costumed superhero, Aviore, while exploring the convention grounds. Aviore was gifted to EAA by the Stan Lee Foundation in 2017. Comic book legend Stan Lee’s creativity spawned Spider-Man, Black Panther, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, among others, and paved the way for superhero dominance at the box office.

Introduced at last year’s fly-in, Aviore — with a special visit from Stan Lee — helped celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Young Eagles program, the world’s most successful aviation youth outreach initiative. This

year’s AirVenture marks the release of the first issue of The Adventures of Aviore, a comic book that will give kids of all ages their first look at Aviore in action.

Aviore’s mission is the same as ours — to grow participation in aviation. When he’s not “on duty,” Aviore’s alter ego, Jake “Perry” Howard, is a young homebuilder who spends his free time volunteering as a Young Eagles pilot. THE VINTAGE AIRCRAFT Association (VAA) will honor the memory of one of its longtime leaders today when the VAA dedicates Charles W. Harris Memorial Park, or “Charlie’s Park.” The dedication program begins at 11:45 a.m., just west of the Vintage Hangar, with all EAA AirVenture Oshkosh visitors invited to attend.

The wooded area will honor the late Harris, who died December 9, 2017, at age 90. He served the VAA in various capacities including national director, treasurer, chairman of the executive committee, chairman of the Hall of Fame selection committee, and director emeritus from 1988 to the time of his death.

In honor of Charlie’s love of World War II aviation and naval history, the Ladies for Liberty will present their 1940s musical tribute to the Andrews Sisters at the dedication event. Also speaking during the program

will be Betsey Kersey, Charlie’s business partner for 53 years. Kersey will be introduced by VAA President Susan Dusenbury and EAA CEO and Chairman of the Board Jack J. Pelton.

Charlie had a long, distinguished business career in Oklahoma, but he also had a lifelong passion for vintage aircraft. In 2001, he founded the Friends of the Red Barn, the major VAA annual fundraising campaign to preserve and expand the “Vintage experience” during the annual AirVenture fly-in convention.

He was instrumental in securing two major donations in 2017 to construct the VAA judges building and to restore and expand the iconic VAA Red Barn headquarters. The dedication today will be immediately followed by an ice cream social on the front porch of the VAA Red Barn, where the Ladies for Liberty will also perform.

THE PISTON AVIATION Fuels Initiative (PAFI) is currently considering next steps for the development of unleaded fuels for the GA aircraft fleet after the FAA announced in June that it was temporarily suspending testing of the two fuels in the program, giving the fuel developers an opportunity to address some of the findings from the exhaustive testing.

Those two fuels, from Shell and Swift, have been studied since 2016 and were the final candidates of 19 fuels to advance to full-scale engine and flight testing.

PAFI was developed as a collaborative program between the FAA and the aviation and petroleum industries to find a satisfactory high-octane unleaded replacement for 100LL avgas, which is currently used by the vast majority of piston aircraft in the U.S. GA fleet.

Full-scale engine and aircraft testing has been temporarily suspended to allow time for fuel developers to assess and potentially address differences between the unleaded fuels and 100LL. As satisfactory mitigations to these differences are developed PAFI will continue to evaluate the fuels further.

In the meantime, PAFI, through the FAA, has also reached out to other fuel developers with proposed fuels that emerged after the program was established, or who had previously declined to participate in the initial competitive process, to determine if further examination of any of those fuels is warranted.

“The collaborative FAA-industry PAFI program has done exactly what it was designed to do — take promising fuels and subject them to rigorous, standardized materials, engine, fuel system, and aircraft testing, developed and agreed to by the full breadth of the industry, to determine their performance characteristics and any limitations

they might pose in satisfying the general aviation fleet,” said Doug Macnair, EAA’s vice president of government relations. Macnair has been EAA’s representative to the PAFI program from its inception.

He said finding a fuel that safely and cost-effectively meets the requirements of the GA fleet, and has the confidence of aircraft owners as well as engine and airframe manufacturers, is PAFI’s priority, and it does not intend to introduce fuels to the market that do not meet these goals.

“What this process tells us is what EAA has maintained for the past 30 years: Finding a high-octane unleaded avgas replacement is a daunting technological challenge,” Macnair said. “EAA joins everyone in the industry in welcoming all potential solutions to take part in this standardized and industryaccepted testing protocol, so together we

are available to answer questions about their proposed fuels.

The PAFI program’s efforts to evaluate high-octane unleaded alternatives to 100LL will continue into the future and will include facilitating the eventual deployment of any future fuel.

Full commercialization and deployment of a replacement for 100LL will only occur through the collaboration of the aviation and petroleum industries, along with environmental and aviation regulators. Macnair said the strength of the PAFI program is in bringing all of the necessary resources and knowledge together to work toward a common understanding and potential solutions.

Fun Without Sun at Oshkosh AirVenture attendees are excited for the week ahead, rain or shine

FOR AN EVENT known as the Woodstock of aviation, it’s not surprising the weekend’s inclement weather failed to dampen the fun for early visitors at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018.

“We love it — this is a great time to be here,” said Rick Steele with his wife, Brenda, contrasting the conditions at Wittman Regional Airport with the humid heat back home in Kingwood, Texas. “This is beautiful weather.”

At Homebuilders Headquarters, Jim Schmitt EAA 212579, from Evansville, Indiana, and Jim Price from Boise, Idaho, were deep in hangar talk, Schmitt’s Pulsar and Price’s Long-EZ parked within sight on the flightline. With more than 65 Oshkosh fly-ins between them, they provided the veterans’ perspective on the gray skies. “There’s always plenty of activity to do when it’s not good weather,” Schmitt said.

“A lot of what we come for is the exchange of information, to relax and learn what other aviators are doing, and enjoy conversation,” Price said.

Aiden Goodmansen and Samuel Badger, both youngsters from Mesa, Arizona, were strolling down Wittman Road in the morning mist, exploring the rows of aircraft on display. “We’re trying to find the most memorable kind,” Samuel said. “There are a lot crazy-looking ones,” Aiden added.

The boys, members of Mesa’s Aviation Explorers Post 352, are visiting AirVenture for the first time, and the drizzle was almost welcome. “The weather’s pretty nice,” Aiden said. “Phoenix is 100 degrees.”

Both Aiden and Samuel eventually want to learn to fly and build their own airplanes. “Kits sound like a ton of fun,” Samuel said, and based on whatever his future needs are, “I figure there’s a good one out there,” he said. The two are camping at the Aviation

Bryan Jones, EAA 554776, from Houston was reading a copy of AirVenture Today with his morning coffee at the Waypoint Café. “This cool, soggy weather is very relaxing,” he said. “The only problem is my feet are wet. Other than that, I’m just dandy.” Bryan, who’s been to the fly-in, “eight or 10 times,” arrived in his RV-8. Built 18 years ago, it’s “right at 2,000 hours,” he said. He’s meeting up with friends here, and “We just work around” the weather, Bryan added. “We’ll just self-generate our own fun.”

Meanwhile, the Steeles were getting on with their day. “We’ll go walk the warbirds, go to the museum, and see what forums are coming up,” Rick said.

The couple had long dreamed of flying to the Bahamas, and on their last Oshkosh visit two years ago, they attended a forum on flying to the islands. Armed with information, they set their sights on flying to Eleuthera, one of the chain’s Out Islands.

“It’s hard to get to — there are no cruise ships.” They made their bucket list journey there last year. “It was the time of our lives,” Rick said. He offered a last bit of advice on dealing with the gray weather at Oshkosh.

“Just get out and enjoy it,” he said. “No sunblock required.”

Dominican Republic to OSH Duo of Lancairs flown thousands of miles for aviation celebration

A PAIR OF Lancairs arrived in Oshkosh Friday after making the trek from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and are now proudly on display right beside the Brown Arch.

The two airplanes are owned by Oscar Imbert, EAA 554054, who said it was his dream since childhood to be able to own an airplane and fly it.

“I am very grateful to EAA because 20 years ago I came with the dream of building an airplane, and EAA always has been our support, for homebuilders,” Oscar said. “So it’s incredible for me, who was born in the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean, and as a child I always dreamed of flying. The years came and came, and finally I decided to build a plane in the D.R.” The airplanes, named El Pollito and Pollo 2, are a Lancair IV and Lancair Evolution, respectively. Both airplanes had been to Oshkosh separately, as this is the fifth AirVenture for Pollo 2 and the seventh for El Pollito, but this was the first time Oscar had them both in Oshkosh simultaneously.

Pollo 2 was built in Bend, Oregon, but Oscar’s first airplane, El Pollito, was the one he constructed with help in Punta Cana. Oscar said the great thing about

the homebuilding community is that it’s introduced him to people he never would’ve otherwise met, as well as its helpful spirit.

“In the homebuilders, there is a community,” Oscar said. “When you have a problem, you just have to say, ‘I have a problem.’ And somebody will help you.”

In addition to El Pollito being a rarity because of its construction in the Dominican Republic, both Lancairs have a unique twist to them — their identifying numbers are not painted on, but rather are exposed carbon fiber.

Oscar said that although it’s unconventional, the method has held up just fine for both of his airplanes, which have nearly 2,000 hours on them combined.

“As [far as] I know, these are the only two planes to have real carbon fiber numbers exposed,” Oscar said. “You are not supposed to do that because the carbon fiber can get de-laminated. So what we did is we did three extra layers of carbon fiber where the numbers are. It’s very unique.”

While he may have left an airport far different than many U.S. pilots are used to, Oscar’s final approach to Oshkosh fell right in line with a common experience — he had to find a way through some

rainy weather into Wittman Regional Airport.

The Lancairs departed La Isabela International Airport (MDJB) in Santo Domingo and entered the United States at Opa-Locka Executive Airport (OPF). They then headed north to Crossville Memorial Airport (CSV) before stopping at Illinois Valley Regional Airport (VYS) on their way to Oshkosh.

“We found a hole and we squeezed by, and thank god we are here, no problem,” Oscar said. “Now we are expecting good weather and to have a nice week here. …

Those planes are really amazing. You can come all the way from Santo Domingo to here in one-and-a-half days.”

EAA Flight Test Manual First of Its Kind New manual available in September

EAA WILL DEBUT its first-ever flight-test manual for experimental pilots in September 2018. The manual will be briefly introduced at the “Flight Test Like a Pro” forum today at 2:30 p.m. at Forum Pavilion 11.

The number of amateur-built experimental aircraft being flown has grown exponentially since the early years of the homebuilding industry. Though flight testing is a key factor in the success and safety of amateur-built aircraft, by helping to familiarize the pilot with a new plane, there is currently no comprehensive guide for flight testing experimental aircraft.

The EAA Flight Test Manual will be available for purchase in September through EAA. The “Flight Test Like a Pro” forum will be led by veteran flight test pilots Charlie Precourt,

The EAA Flight Test Manual is prepared in partnership with EAA’s Homebuilt Aircraft Council and provides professional guidance for conducting the flight testing of new amateur-built planes.

The manual’s best practices include important steps to take before the first flight, such as documenting maintenance work, the status of the aircraft’s equipment, fuel tests, and weight-and-balance characteristics.

The EAA Flight Test Manual is also accompanied by 18 flight-test cards that cover testing of the first taxi, takeoff and landing, climb speeds, stalling characteristics, and everything in between.

Following the guide will result in the performance numbers needed for safe flight and to include in your

former NASA astronaut who currently chairs EAA’s Safety Committee; Terry Lutz, former Air Force test pilot and current flight test safety consultant to Airbus; and Chris Glaeser, also a former Air Force test pilot.

The forum will discuss the safe flight testing of amateur-built aircraft, making it an ideal place to preview the manual.

“This manual will have a real impact on helping pilots complete a clear-cut and thorough flight test of their new aircraft,” Charlie said. “Its guidelines are designed to increase pilot preparedness and test the abilities of the aircraft to assure its safe and optimal performance.”

KENT STATE UNIVERSITY INVESTS IN NEW ALSIM SIMULATORS FOR AERONAUTICS ACADEMIC CENTER ALSIM IS HAPPY to announce the sale of four simulators, two AL250s and two AL172s, to Kent State University’s College of Aeronautics and Engineering (CAE).

The simulators will be installed in the new 18,000-square-foot Aeronautics Academic Center, slated to open in mid2019, located at Kent State University Airport in Stow, Ohio.

Kent State’s new ALSIM simulator fleet will complement its aircraft fleet,

the largest university fleet in Ohio. It includes 27 single-engine Cessna aircraft, two twin-engine Piper Seminoles, and three single-engine Piper Arrows.

“This was a straightforward, valuebased decision,” said Robert G. Sines Jr., interim dean for CAE. “The quality and fidelity of the AL250 and AL172 we’ve chosen are outstanding and will seamlessly merge into our existing flight-training operations, providing

enhanced training opportunities for our students.”

EAA’S FLYING START program provides EAA chapters with an opportunity to reach out into the local community and bring those interested in aviation to the airport for a firsthand look at the wonders of flight.

EAA Chapter Field Representative David Leiting said the program was initially introduced in the 1990s, and is being reinvigorated to pair with EAA’s Eagle Flights program to get more adults involved in aviation.

“Local chapters invite in the general public from the local area to an airport open house- style event, whether it’s a barbecue or coffee and doughnuts in the morning,” David said. “They do a short presentation about what it takes to learn to fly. It’s really targeted at that group that’s always thought, ‘Flying is really cool; I should look into that someday.’”

After the presentation, Flying Start attendees get into the sky with their own Eagle Flight. Participating attendees also get a six-month trial EAA membership, and participating chapters are encouraged to pair that with a six-month chapter membership as well.

“The goal is, hopefully, they start flight training at some point shortly thereafter,” David said. “But ultimately it helps bring new folks into our organization and into the local chapters.”

Some chapters across the country have already run Flying Start programs as a beta test for its reintroduction.

Chapters 1, 179, and 690 in Riverside, California; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Lawrenceville, Georgia, respectively, have all hosted Flying Start events.

“Each of them had about 15-20 people show up,” David said. “Chapter 1 decided to host a second event because it was so successful. I think there were three attendees from the first one that are in flight training now. There are a couple who haven’t started flight training yet, but they joined the chapter because they want to at some point.”

In addition to having a positive effect on a chapter membership, David said the Flying Start program is a fitting way for those already involved in aviation to give back to the community.

“I always tell people, at one point you were someone hanging on the outside of the fence looking in with an interest in aviation,” David said. “And it took someone to bring you through the fence and be your mentor to get you involved. So this is really the chapter’s opportunity to give back to the community.”

L3 Introduces Lynx NGT-9000 System Enhancements All-in-one transponder enhances situational awareness and safety L3 COMMERCIAL AVIATION announced today a new software upgrade that provides performance, start-up, and compatibility enhancements for the ADS -B Transponder and Display System. The upgrade, release 3.2, will be available starting in August for Lynx NGT-9000 operators. Current Ly n x o p e ra t o r s c a n v i s i t t h e i r

installation centers for the upgrade, which is free and will be standard in all new systems.

“We continue to invest and broaden the reach of the Lynx NGT-9000 with these release 3.2 enhancements, including the introduction of an interface with the Genesys IDU-680 EFIS, as well as other upgrades,” said Shane LaPlante, vice

president of sales and marketing at ACSS, a business within L3 Commercial Aviation. “Lynx is a turnkey solution for general aviation aircraft and Part 27 rotorcraft, providing enhanced situational awareness, ATAS traffic alerting below 500 feet, safety, and ADS-B compliance.”

The Lynx NGT-9000 release 3.2 enhancements include:

REPRODUCTION SOPWITH 1.5 STRUTTER COMMEMORATES RAF CENTENNIAL A NEW PRODUCTION, full-scale, fully functional Sopwith 1.5 Strutter fitted with a new production Gnome Monosoupape 100-hp rotary engine is on display at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018.

The Sopwith 1.5 Strutter was commonly referred to as the workhorse of the Great War due to its versatility. It was used extensively by the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) as a scout (fighter), for artillery observation and photo reconnaissance, and as a bomber. With the Army’s Royal Flying Corps (RFC) covetous of the RNAS’ Sopwiths, an Advisory Air Board was eventually created to better allocate resources and reduce inter-service rivalries.

Eventually, the RNAS and RFC were merged in April 1918, becoming the Royal Air Force.

During this time, the Sopwith Pup, 1.5 Strutter, Triplane, and Camel were used extensively by both services to gain air superiority and ultimately win the war.

In celebration of the centennial of the Royal Air Force, any RAF airmen attending AirVenture are invited to climb aboard the Strutter and experience the cockpits and controls of an early airplane firsthand.

Produced using the original Sopwith factory drawings, this uncovered, two-seat fighter/ trainer allows the enthusiast to examine the construction methods used at the time as well as the working control systems. For those who want to experience exactly what it was like to fly an airplane from the World War I era, KipAero currently offers four Sopwith models, either fully assembled or in kit form: Strutter, Pup, Triplane, and Camel. KipAero is located at Booth 310 in the Main Aircraft Display.

THE AMERICAN RED Cross is hosting a blood drive Tuesday, July 24, at UW Oshkosh in the Gruenhagen Conference Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The organization said it has an urgent need for blood and platelet donors of all kinds to help prevent a summer blood shortage.

With busy summer schedules, vacations, and school breaks, the Red Cross said it typically sees a drop in donations this time of year.

To make an appointment, donors can download the American Red Cross Blood Donor app, visit www.RedCrossBlood. org, or contact Charles Reingardt at 414614-8612. Completion of a RapidPass online health history questionnaire is encouraged to help speed up the donation process. A blood donor card and driver’s license — or two other forms of

identification — are required at check-in.
