they knew what they were getting into, and if they would make it back.” Jerome LaForest, of Pontiac, Michigan, was a senior in high school in 1969, but he most remembers a bet made by his father in the 1940s. “During World War II, my father was on a carrier, but he made a bet with another sailor that by 1970, we would have put a man on the moon,” Jerome said. “That was in the early 1940s, and people thought he was crazy.” He wasn’t crazy, and he won that bet. Cathy Gustafson, of Kingwood, Texas, said she remembers her parents calling her and her siblings in around the television to see the Apollo landing. Don Jeffries, EAA 371855, of Louisville, Kentucky, was 15 years old in 1969 and on vacation with his family and some friends in Daytona Beach, Florida. “The

For the first time ever, man inhabited the moon. It was history happening before our nation’s eyes, something that had seemed impossible just a few years earlier. Charles Swain, EAA 28215, of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, remembers exactly where he was on July 20, 1969 — watching the landing and first steps on the moon from his black-and-white TV. In fact, he said it is one of those images that will forever be burned in his mind. “I was in Beaver Dam, and I had a 10-month-old son, and I clearly remember the importance of what was going on at that time,” Charles said. “Amongst protestations from my wife, I got my son out of bed, and we watched from the floor. “I saw the moon out the window as I watched Armstrong come down from the ladder,” he said. “Of course my son has no recollections.” So where was his wife? “Working in the kitchen,” Charles said. “I would holler when something was happening, and she would come running. She really didn’t realize then the importance of that event.” Sammy Mobley, EAA 1172292, of Raleigh, North Carolina, was 14 years old in 1969 and said he was more interested in swimming and being with girls. But the country club where they went swimming had a teen room with a TV. “We all watched the moon landing from there,” he said. “I wasn’t going to miss seeing the first man stepping on the moon, and it was pretty amazing. I can’t say I watched it all, but I remember wondering whether

EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2019 will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing with several presentations and a film remembering the people and the historic July 1969 flight that marked the first time men landed on the moon and returned safely. From 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, four-time space shuttle astronaut Charlie Precourt will moderate a discussion at Theater in the Woods with Apollo 9 astronaut and lunar module pilot Jim McDivitt, Grumman lunar module engineer Dick Smith, and historian and author Robert Godwin. Then, from 8 to 10 p.m., Apollo 11 command module pilot Michael Collins will be the featured guest as AirVenture commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission. Collins will be joined by fellow Apollo astronaut Joe Engle during the evening program, which will highlight the millions of manhours and hundreds of thousands of people who made the first manned moon landing possible. Also on Friday, from 8:30 to 10:45 p.m., First Man will be shown at the Airbus Fly-in Theater. The film stars Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong and re-creates Armstrong’s research flights, the Gemini mission, and the moon landing. In other presentations, Cam Martin will present “Neil Armstrong: Before the Fireworks,” from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Wednesday on Appareo Aviation Forum Stage 9, detailing Armstrong’s work from 1955 through 1962 piloting aircraft such as the X-1B, the X-5, and the X-15.

Apollo mission was a nonevent for the rest of my family, but I was very interested because I had always wanted to fly,” he said. “I watched it on the TV in the hotel, while the rest of my family stayed in the pool.” John and Yvonne Slack, of Bonfield, Illinois, watched the Apollo landing from a neighbor’s home because they didn’t have a TV. “I don’t think that any of us could believe that it was happening,” John said. “It was amazing. I remember that it took such a long time from landing until they stepped out. We kept watching and watching, wondering when it was going to happen.” Yvonne also recalls the significance of the landing, but really remembers what happened to her as she watched history being made. “My new pair of shoes got chewed up by our friend’s dog named Lonesome,” she said. “I was unaware of what the dog was doing because I was so involved in what was happening on TV.”

THERE’S A DAZZLINGLY shiny aluminum aircraft

in the Vintage area that carries Royal Air Force roundels on the fuselage, and has the pedigree to do so. It’s a Spartan Executive. If any Spartan Executive shows up at AirVenture, it’s cause for interest. Only 34 of the tail-wheeled aluminum monoplanes were made. And while that could be considered enough for an assembly line in the 1930s and 1940s, each of the Executives had a lot of hand-fitting of parts, making interchangeability an interesting exercise for modern-day restorers. This RAF Executive was flown to Oshkosh from Pennsylvania by owner Jim Savage. He learned his Spartan once flew from the Polaris Flight Academy in Lancaster, California. It was part of a workaround that enabled willing Americans to help the British gain trained American flyers to serve England before the United

States was openly involved in World War II. The retractable gear and powerful R-985 engine let the Spartan Executive substitute for traditional military advanced trainers like the AT-6 Texan. For most of 1941 and into 1942, this Spartan carried U.S. civil registration while it was actually owned by the British. In late December 1942, this aircraft was transferred directly to the Royal Air Force Ferry Command in Montreal, Canada. It acquired the RAF serial KD 102. Jim Savage dug into the history of his Spartan, and found logbook entries by at least two RAF pilots who flew his machine before going on to greater exploits during the war. “Getting to know the RAF officer who actually flew it more than 70 years ago is a rare privilege,” Jim said. He figures his Spartan tallies 30-50 flying hours a year these days. AirVenture visitors are lucky to get a look at this silver marvel, because, Jim said, “I don’t go to many shows.” Asked how the Executive handles in the air, Jim said, “It’s big, it’s heavy, and it’s smooth.” He says the cabin on this vintage luxury aircraft is so quiet “you don’t need headphones.” Jim’s Spartan previously was involved in a mishap that broke both main gear legs and did considerable damage to the lower surfaces. He bought the aftermath from an insurance company in 2007 and went to work on it. Enlisting his wife to help with

the count, he determined the Executive has more or less 9,000 round-head rivets. As he was attaining a mirror gloss to the aluminum skin, Jim decided to tackle each rivet head by hand to clean the intersection between rivet and skin, an area that can harbor darker color if left untended. The result of so much elbow grease is simply dazzling. This Spartan Executive has another feature of interest. Four covered ports in the left side of the aft fuselage once were launch

tubes for parachute flares. Back in the day, if a Spartan Executive pilot reached a destination airfield in darkness, a parachute flare could be released while flying a left-hand pattern, providing enough illumination for a safe landing, Jim explained. THE RV-4 IS CELEBRATING its 40th anniversary, and Van’s

Aircraft founder Dick VanGrunsven said the anniversary has made him realize just how important the plane was in his life and in the life of his company. “It really established our company … and a lot of what it demonstrated is included on everything we’ve done since,” Dick said at a Monday forum at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2019. “The RV-4 is really the grandfather of the whole fleet and a very significant airplane.” Over the 40 years, 1,436 RV-4s have flown and more RV-4s are still under construction. Dick said his first plane, the RV-1, was basically a modified Stits Playboy with an aluminum cantilevered wing. The RV-3, an all-new single-seat plane with a metal fuselage, was even better. They marketed the plans and parts in 1973, and by 1975 had complete kits available. “But as soon as the RV-3 was available, people wanted a two-seat RV-3,” Dick said. “You really don’t just add a seat and end up with a wonderful airplane.”

So he went back to the blackboard, and started construction of a prototype of the RV-4 in 1975. By 1979, the RV-4 was available with tandem seating. “It flew quite well out of the box, and we didn’t have to modify much,” he said. At first they marketed the plane with a woman by it, thinking a beautiful woman would sell more airplanes. “We used that photo on our brochure for a couple of years, and then realized the airplane would sell by itself,” he said. The RV-4 was also featured in aviation magazines and flew in exhibitions at air shows. They also gave many introductory flights and flew it in competitions to demonstrate its performance. Soon people were telling Van’s they wanted side-byside seating, and so Dick started engineering the RV-6. Shortly, RV-6 sales were surpassing those of the RV-4. Dick said they actually considered ending RV-4 sales, but decided not to. However, RV-4 kits are produced on a scaled-back basis, he said. So what is Dick’s favorite RV? “Which is your favorite child?” he asked. “If you have multiple children, you understand that while you may have a favorite, you don’t vocalize it.”

PILOTS AND AVIATION enthusiasts alike gathered in New

Holstein on Sunday, July 21, to share their passion for flight. The New Holstein Super Cub Fly-In started in 2002 and was designed to bring people together who had been following the SuperCub.org website. Steve Johnson started the website as a way to provide valuable information to those interested in Super Cubs. To Steve’s surprise, the site got a lot of attention, so much that they decided to make an event so those interacting through the website could finally meet. Seventeen years later, the event has grown beyond what Steve imagined. Roughly 60-150 attendees and campers will show up in total from Friday through Tuesday. “Everyone in the city gets involved,” said Steve Johnson, event organizer, “We invite the mayor, the chief of police, and a lot of city workers will come out and spray for mosquitos and do all sorts of things for us.” Although New Holstein is 40 miles away from EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the feeling was all too familiar; a bunch of like-minded individuals coming together to celebrate their love of aviation. The event started on Friday and will go until Wednesday morning when buses will take New Holstein campers and event attendees to AirVenture for the rest of the week.

A little bad weather couldn’t keep the fun down. Pilots flew out to Jay Bateman’s near Green Bay for breakfast on Saturday and returned for the annual pig roast that night. “One hundred or so people show up and come from Oshkosh for the roast,” Steve said. “We use this event as a way to thank our several volunteers from the city. These community meals bring people together. You end up talking to someone who maybe you hadn’t talked to before. So when we designed this event, this was something that we consciously did, building in these catered meals.”

Sunday kicked off with EAA Chapter 237 hosting a pancake breakfast followed by EAA Young Eagles flights. STOL demos began at 1:00 p.m. “After the STOL demos, we have a flour drop event where we set a big orange target out, we put little kids in the back of an airplane, and they drop flour bags to try to hit the target,” Steve said.

C-47 Miss Montana Coming From Normandy to Oshkosh BY CHRISTINA BASKEN

MISS MONTANA, an original 1944 World War II C-47 that

made the trek over the Atlantic Ocean to commemorate D-Day, will be on the grounds this week to help EAA celebrate 50 years in Oshkosh. Miss Montana was built in May of 1944 and served two years as a troop transport domestically. It was bought in 1946 for Johnson Flying Service, where it served as a smoke jumper airplane, a cargo plane, and a bushplane in Montana and Idaho and all around the Northwest for 30 years. Miss Montana is currently exhibited in the Museum of Mountain Flying in Missoula, Montana. Miss Montana has a long history of aerial firefighting and is most famous for the Mann Gulch fire in 1949. “There was fire outside of Montana, and this airplane dropped 15 jumpers on that fire. They were overrun by the steep terrain, and 12 of those firefighters lost their

lives,” said Eric Komberec, president of the Museum of Mountain Flying, chair of the Miss Montana to Normandy campaign, and captain of Miss Montana. “At the time, that was the largest loss in firefighting history. It was a historic event that really changed firefighting tactics and the way the smoke jumpers operate, and the ground firefighters.” Miss Montana never had the chance to serve overseas, as it was completed near the end of the war. Having never had that opportunity, Mission Miss Montana to Normandy, sponsored by Phillips 66 Aviation, gave her the chance to fulfill that mission — a flyover of more than 30 international aircraft to commemorate the day the Allies invaded Western Europe in WWII. The museum purchased Miss Montana in 1947 and had always wanted to see her fly, but the dream didn’t become a reality until 2018 when it raised enough money for a full restoration.

NEW INTERNATIONAL FEDERAL PAVILION OPENS BY FREDERICK A. JOHNSEN

A GROUP OF FEDERAL AGENCIES, including some from for-

eign countries, is open for business in the new International Federal Pavilion located in Exhibit Hangar D. That’s a big switch, after decades of federal agency exhibits in a metal building near the flightline. Several special-purpose mission aircraft from some of the agencies are parked just to the west of the building. Robert Madill, aviation officer for the U.S. Forest Service’s eastern region, is optimistic the Federal Pavilion may see more traffic in its new location. “We have an entrance right here,” he said, pointing over his shoulder toward a main gate into the AirVenture grounds. Madill has information about Forest Service flight operations, including current vacancies for specialized de Havilland Beaver pilots. He figures a good day at AirVenture is when he can “expose the public to the Forest Service mission as a whole.” Over at the National Park Service exhibit, which includes a truncated Wright Flyer flight simulator, Mark Dues, a Dayton resident, mischievously said,

“Success for us is the ‘aha!’ moment when people understand that aviation began in Ohio. No offense against North Carolina,” he added. The Park Service exhibit highlights some pivotal historic sites where the Wrights perfected flight around Dayton after their seminal first flight on the dunes in North Carolina. U.S Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has a contingent of uniformed members representing the organization’s air, sea, and land missions. The group’s duties can include search and rescue. Team members say they may even do a little recruiting. They put a friendly face on an agency often in the news.

Outreach to the general aviation community at AirVenture includes a variety of lessons-learned programs at the Federal Pavilion as well as other forum venues, he says. Over at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service/U.S. Geological Survey display, under the umbrella of the U.S. Department of the Interior, imagery shows highresolution results of migratory bird surveys made from the air. Now, said geographer Benjamin Finley, machine learning can let computers do the once tedious task of counting birds from the multi-spectral imaging. Aircraft also fly aquatic surveys to determine populations and concentrations of whales, sea turtles, dolphins, and manatees, said specialist Steve Earsom. The visible sealife accounts for a percentage of the total, and another federal agency, NOAA, helps model the likely totals of this marine life. The databases generated by these surveys are available to the public. Other federal agencies participate in the Federal Pavilion at AirVenture, with representatives leaning forward to greet the public and share the agencies’ missions with visitors.

Two events at Aviation Gateway Park highlight the absolute cutting edge of what’s happening in aviation: the Lindbergh Innovation Forum and the UAM Executive Roundtable. The Lindbergh Innovation Forum runs from 9 a.m. to noon at the EAA Forums Center and features key breakthroughs and innovations that will shape aviation for decades to come, using a format that features many speakers in short, compact presentations and panels. It is hosted by Erik Lindbergh, grandson of Charles Lindbergh. The UAM Executive Roundtable is a one-hour panel discussion beginning at 1 p.m. in the EAA Forums Center, moderated by EAA and TransportUP, that will discuss various topics related to the development, design, and manufacturing of urban air mobility aircraft.

In addition to these highlighted events, the Innovation Showcase and Urban Air Mobility Showcase will be packed with innovative companies all week long. The Innovation Showcase features nearly two-dozen companies — each selected because of their market potential — helping shape innovation in general and recreational aviation. And speaking of the future, there’s never been a more robustly covered wave of aviation experimentation than urban air mobility. Other items within the bill include limitations on reexamination of certificate holders, due process enhancements for aviation rulemaking and exemption petitions, timely resolution of investigations, a publicprivate partnership program at GA airports to attract private sector funding, and funding and development at designated disaster relief airports. This is the latest of many general aviation-friendly bills introduced by Inhofe, who introduced the Pilot’s Bill of Rights and the Securing and Revitalizing Aviation Act, both of which contained numerous protections for pilots.

still rumbled in the distance when the Cirrus SR22, piloted by 22-year-old Steven Noonan of Western Michigan University, entered the downwind from the Fisk transition, made a tight base leg turn, and touched down precisely on the purple dot, as directed by the tower. On any other Saturday before AirVenture, Steve would have been one of many thousands to land at the busiest airport in the world. But today he was alone. Rather than being shuttled off to general aviation parking, he was directed up Taxiway A-2, air show center, directly in front of Boeing Plaza. There was a feeding frenzy of volunteers in Day-Glow vests to direct him in — 20 volunteers, one airplane. Through it all, Steve seemed remarkably calm and unruffled. What should have been one of the busiest arrival days of AirVenture was washed out when a low pressure area swung a cold front in from the northwest and the front encountered warm tropical air from the southeast. The spectacular collision of air masses resulted in 50-knot winds, 2.5 inches of rain, and, needless to say, the cancellation of (almost) all flights into Wittman Regional Airport. One might reasonably wonder how it was that Steve was able to pull it off. Good flight planning, good equipment, the right resources, and professionalism seemed to be the answer. Steve departed Battle Creek, Michigan, on an IFR flight plan and arrived at Madison, Wisconsin, in front of the approaching storm. After lunch, he used all the weather radar sites available to track the storm as it moved over Oshkosh. When the line of thunderstorms passed he loaded up his student co-pilot and two passengers and flew VFR at 3,500 feet over a few scattered

clouds at 1,800 feet and beneath a 5,500foot overcast. It sounds easy when you read it — a piece of cake. But, as anybody who has been there knows, it’s much more than that. Good pilots make it look easy. Steve began flying in the Education for Employment program at Portage Central High School south of Kalamazoo, Michigan. He holds a commercial pilot certificate with an instrument rating and instrument flight instructor certificate. Though he just graduated with his bachelor’s degree this spring, he has been teaching in the aviation department at Western Michigan University for the last two years amassing 600 hours of flying time. While in college he was part of the Army ROTC program and is now a member of the Michigan National Guard, awaiting flight training in CH-47 Chinook helicopters. He is also part of the Delta Propel program for aspiring airline pilots. Steve was charged with bringing its flagship Cirrus SR22, Generation II, to AirVenture for display at the WMU exhibit. Reflecting back on the flight Steve said, “It was a good real-life flying experience away from the college (flight training) environment. PIC (pilot in command) decisions had to be made, I had to be careful not to overload my student co-pilot, and the passengers had to be attended to, while making safety the first priority of the flight,” he added. Two New Simulators Added to Warbirds Youth Education Center

THE WARBIRDS OF America Youth Education Center now contains four iconic warbird simulators for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2019, and all of them will be available to help accomplish the center’s mission of inspiring young people. P-51D Mustang Sizzlin’ Liz and F4U Corsair Korean War Hero are the new simulators, joining P-51D Old Crow and an F4U Corsair modeled after Lt. j.g. Thomas J. Hudner’s aircraft. All of the simulators were made by Redbird Flight Simulations. Old Crow was modeled after the Mustang flown by World War II triple ace C.E. “Bud” Anderson, with donor support provided by Hank Menke & Family. The Corsair modeled after Lt. j.g. Tom Hudner’s aircraft assigned to VF-32 had donor support provided by the John M. O’Connor Family. Sizzlin’ Liz, modeled after a WWII 4th Fighter

in conventions in Oshkosh, we’re featuring stories of Oshkosh told by attendees remembering their special moments at EAA’s long-standing home. John Puent, EAA 43711, has attended every AirVenture since 1970 and doesn’t plan on breaking his streak. The first time John went to an Oshkosh convention was 1968 in Rockford, Illinois, when he was 28 years old. “Somebody told me you could build your own airplane, so of course I had to go to Rockford to find out, and sure enough, you can build your own airplane,” John said. “It really just turned my crank that you could build your own airplane, particularly out of wood. It was just amazing to me.”

John was hooked, particularly on the Piel Emeraude and the Piel Diamant airplanes. “I met a fella from Massachusetts at AirVenture that had a Piel Diamant and was kind enough to give me a ride because I was building one at the time,” John said. “That was my first time in an airplane.” 1968 was also the year that John saw Bob Hoover perform for the first time.

“We got there a little bit later in the afternoon, about 4 o’clock, and this guy was out doing aerobatics in a thunderstorm,” John said. “He would disappear into the clouds with a 500-foot ceiling and come zooming down on the other side, and that really impressed me.” Since then, John has only missed one AirVenture in his lifetime, in 1969. “It’s been such a great experience,” John said. “You meet such nice people … really, really nice people. I just love it. We got good friends that I like to see every year and people that like to camp with us. It kind of just gets in your blood, if you go for all these years; you just can’t really let it go.” John said he particularly enjoys seeing the ultralights year after year, having built a Fisher 101 himself. Although, one of his favorite memories is time spent with family at AirVenture.

“We would bring our three kids to AirVenture, and they would run up to each airplane, and I had to lift each of the kids so they could look inside.” John recalled. John started volunteering for EAA in 1970 on the rock-fence crew. Though he no longer volunteers, John continues to support EAA through his local Chapter 100 in Rochester, Minnesota. John said he is planning on coming back to celebrate the 50th anniversary at the 2019 convention.

FAIREY FIREFLY ON DISPLAY IN WARBIRDS AREA Capt. EVERY YEAR, more than 10,000 aircraft fly

to Wisconsin for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Of those, nearly 3,000 are showplanes — vintage aircraft, warbirds, homebuilts, aerobatic airplanes, etc. — that are displayed around the grounds. But some visitors may notice other airplanes parked here and there that didn’t fly in at all, because they’re part of the EAA Aviation Museum collection. Because our museum exhibits rotate, many of these aircraft are only viewable by the public during AirVenture, spending the rest of the year in long-term storage on the convention grounds. Here’s a guide to some of these airplanes that you’ll see as you wander the neighborhoods of AirVenture.

In 1949, H.H. “Pete” Myers bought a damaged Piper

J-3C-65 Cub on floats. He removed the floats and sold them, and then started modifying the aircraft for aerobatics. Over the next several years, he made several radical changes, including replacing the original 65-hp

engine with a 100-hp Lycoming O-235-C, installing a set of clipped Taylorcraft wings, and shortening the fuselage by 3 feet. Myers and his PM-1 were fixtures on the Midwest air show circuit for years.

mobility (UAM) is exploring how different technologies and configurations of aircraft will perform in the urban environment. To start gathering as much data as possible, engineers at NASAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Langley Research Center are moving forward with their newest modular unmanned aerial system, the Langley Aerodrome #8, or LA-8. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The project is called Advanced Urban Air Mobility Test Beds,â&#x20AC;? said Dave North, unmanned aerial systems section lead. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a new effort in aeronautics to look at urban flight, both unmanned flight like package delivery vehicles, all the way up to manned vehicles that may carry six or eight people at a time.â&#x20AC;? The LA-8 recently completed its first wind tunnel test in NASAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 12-foot lowspeed wind tunnel at Langley. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is all about getting the data and getting the process down so we can help the private sector accelerate the whole urban air mobility effort,â&#x20AC;? North said. A popular concept for urban flights is known as electric vertical takeoff and landing, or eVTOL. Put simply, the aircraft can take off like a helicopter, hover, and then transition to fast-forward flight like an airplane. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That hand off from hovering to forward flight is really difficult from a control standpoint,â&#x20AC;? North said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;NASA is starting to look at these concepts and how you would fly them in the airspace, and how to help all these private companies get their vehicles certified, airworthy, and safe to fly. So weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re building these technology test beds to investigate those things.â&#x20AC;? Collecting as much data as possible in a world where many different styles of urban aircraft are coming to life off the papers they were first designed on is the challenge. To accomplish this task, the LA-8 is a modular vehicle that can have almost any part redesigned and swapped

out for a different one thanks to computeraided design (CAD) and 3D printing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The focus initially was to build as much of the aircraft as we could using 3D printers,â&#x20AC;? said Greg Howland, NASA engineer. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We go straight from the CAD file to getting it printed out. Less handson work for the parts.â&#x20AC;? Roughly 80 percent of the LA-8 is made from 3D printed material, allowing these engineers to change the wings, the fuselage, and other sections quite rapidly. The capability to rapidly design, fabricate, and test these types of new configurations was developed as part of the Transformative Aeronautics Conceptsâ&#x20AC;&#x201C; Convergent Aeronautics Solutions (TAC-CAS) program. The project is also being funded by the Air Traffic Managementâ&#x20AC;&#x201C;Exploration (ATM-X) and TAC Transformational Tools and Technologies (TAC-TTT) programs. North said they expect to have the LA-8 move from wind tunnel tests to flight tests by late August. The NASA Pavilion in Aviation Gateway Park features LA-8 information and more of NASAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s aeronautics research.
