EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 is off to a great start with aircraft camping areas filling to capacity by early afternoon Monday. “It has really taken off, this first day,” said Jack J. Pelton, EAA CEO and chairman of the board. “Part of that is we had some pretty bad weather on Saturday and Sunday, but it just feels like this is going to be another record year.” Our thanks go out to the volunteers and air traffic controllers who helped safely welcome so many visitors to Oshkosh on opening day.

WORKING IN STEALTH for a number of years, Opener founder and CEO Marcus Leng developed and then flew BlackFly, an all-new fixed wing, all electric, amphibious, vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. Since a crude prototype was developed in 2011, the concept has evolved into an eight-motor fly-by-wire airplane ultimately targeted at recreational flyers that may or may not hold a pilot certificate. The company now estimates that the various aircraft in their BlackFly development program have amassed something like 12,000 hours in the air.
“What happened was Marcus was happily retired,” said former Google executive and world skydiving record holder Alan Eustace. “He had built a successful manufacturing organization and then started doing his homework on electric motors, propulsion systems, carbon fiber technology, lightweight aircraft, and

batteries, and he came to a conclusion that not many people had [10 or 11 years ago]; that it was possible now to build something that could fly based on electric propulsion.” Alan joined the BlackFly team to help to make the concept into a complete product. When asked what attracted him to the program he responded, “I actually thought aviation would be the last place that electricity would replace piston and turbine engines. The reason for that was that weight mattered.” Alan heard about the program through a friend, went to see the BlackFly fly, and was convinced that he should get involved. “For me it’s that cutting edge and the safety aspects really appeal to me,” he added. BlackFly takes a somewhat different approach to the challenge of vertical takeoff and landing. Through automated control of the eight customdesigned electric motors, the entire craft rocks back to a vertical attitude for takeoff. It moves to the horizontal after departure allowing the canard configuration wings to provide lift and permit flight speeds and efficiencies not available to strictly rotorcraft configurations. The computerized flight controls contain a number of safety features including soft landing assist, a return to place of departure button, and flight envelope protection. A ballistic parachute option provides added levels of safety.

Five teams will compete to solve loss of control BY MEGAN ESAU
FIVE FINALISTS WILL present their solutions for in-flight loss of control (LOC) in a Shark Tank-style program at An Evening With Innovators – The Founder’s Innovation Prize today at 8 p.m. at Theater in the Woods, with submissions ranging from technology to training-based solutions. The Founder’s Innovation Prize competition, presented by Airbus, is in its third year and challenges EAA members to share their best ideas for reducing the rate of in-flight LOC accidents in experimental amateur-built aircraft. A panel of five expert judges will evaluate the finalists’ solutions based on effectiveness, ease of installation, and cost. The first-place winner will be awarded $25,000, and the second- and third-place winners will take home $10,000 and $5,000, respectively. The five judges include incumbents Charlie Precourt, former NASA astronaut in the space shuttle program and chair of EAA’s safety committee; Gregory Feith, former NTSB senior air safety investigator; civilian test pilot and air racer Dave Morss; and Dick VanGrunsven, whose RV series are the most popular kit designs in the word. Joining the panel this year is Pat Anderson, professor of aerospace engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and director of ERAU’s Eagle Flight Research Center. The evening will be emceed by Lt. Col. Olga Custodio, the first Hispanic female to complete U.S. Air Force undergraduate pilot training.

Opener has a virtual reality simulator in its booth that demonstrates the simple-to-operate controls and many of the craft’s automated flying features. Built to conform to the FAA Part 103 regulations for ultralight aircraft in the U.S., a pilot certificate is not required to operate the single-seat craft. A comprehensive training program that uses simulation will familiarize pilots with abnormal situations and ensure pilots understand the craft’s features and control systems prior to the first flight. According to Marcus, BlackFly batteries will transport airplane and pilot about 20 miles on a full charge. Charging typically requires an hour with special equipment and six hours when plugged into a standard 110V outlet. A heavier configuration, allowed under regulations in other countries, will support longer flight times and higher speeds. Two BlackFly aircraft, including one with a substantial number of flight hours on it, are on display at Opener’s booth in the Innovation Showcase building in Aviation Gateway Park.

Stratotanker Arrives in Oshkosh KC-135 sits on Boeing Plaza to Celebrate the Year of the Tanker BY TI WINDISCH
THE YEAR OF the Tanker wouldn’t be complete without the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker represented, which it will be all week at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 after one rolled into Boeing Plaza from Milwaukee on Sunday. The massive tanker had a short flight from its home base, which was a good thing according to Wisconsin Air National Guard Master Sgt. and KC-135 crew chief Kelly Lawrence. “The weather was bad there and the weather was bad here,” Lawrence said. “It was a very short flight so it was really nice not having to stay in that for too long.” This is Lawrence’s first trip to Oshkosh, and he said despite working on KC-135s and seeing plenty of other aircraft since 1990, he’s still finding new things to see at AirVenture. “Seeing so many airplanes over so many years I didn’t think I’d be this excited about seeing airplanes,
but I’ve already seen some things I haven’t seen before,” Lawrence said. “And we’ve only been here a couple hours. I look forward to doing the tours.” Lawrence, other crew members, and the pilots of the KC-135 will be around it all week to answer questions and give tours to Oshkosh attendees. Lawrence said he’s planning on asking everyone he gives a tour to where they are from to get to know all the different folks going through his tanker a little better. “I’m really happy to be here, really glad it’s the Year of the Tanker, and I’m really glad that 600,000 people can go through my tanker and I get to shake every one of their hands and say welcome to every single one of them,” Lawrence said. Attendees with questions about the KC-135, a 1962 model, are encouraged to ask them. Lawrence said he and the other crew members get just as enthusiastic about aviation as the typical Oshkosh attendees do. Although this KC-135 was built decades ago, Lawrence said the entire fleet is constantly being equipped with newer technology to keep the Stratotankers able to keep everything else in the fleet up in the air. “They’ve gone through a lot of changes, from the size of the engines to the avionics on board, everything gets constantly updated,” Lawrence said. “It takes us everywhere in the world, that’s why I keep doing this. I get to go somewhere different once a year at least.”
TANKER SERVICEMAN SURPRISES DAUGHTER BY GLENN MOORE
Hailey Lawrence was touring the convention grounds when she spotted a plane with a familiar tail. Looking closer, Hailey realized that it bore the 128th logo for the Air National Guard tanker her father worked on. He was supposed to be in Israel, but because factors changed, Master Sgt. Kelly Lawrence was able to be a part of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 and surprise his daughter. Hailey had not seen him since Father’s Day and enjoyed a double reunion, with both her father and the Boeing KC-135. She had grown up with tankers, often visiting her father’s air force base. Hailey stated her delight at seeing the aircraft again, “Going inside of it yesterday was pretty nostalgic.” Hailey’s father introduced her to aviation. As a child, the sergeant kindled an interest by taking her to air shows. Currently, Hailey works at EAA as a communications intern where she has gained an appreciation for the variety of people who take part in AirVenture. Hailey has seen individuals from as far away as Germany and Australia. As part of the event, Hailey appreciates the impressive scale of the collaboration, “It’s interns, staff, and volunteers all working together. The convention isn’t just an Oshkosh event; people are connected from all over the world. It’s really cool that the community comes together like that,” she said. Among the plethora of upcoming events, Hailey plans on attending all related to the tanker, “not as an intern, but as a supportive daughter.”

engine. Add that to the overall cost of touring a huge four-engine bomber around the United States and Doc can consume up to $10,000 per flight hour. To help defray the expenses, Doc was recently added to the list of approved warbirds for carrying passengers who pay for
the once-in-a-lifetime privilege of flying in one of only two airworthy B -29 Superfortresses in the world. “That’s a game-changer,” said Josh Wells, a director of the group called Doc’s Friends, the nonprofit that supports the big B-29. ups the ante on the bomber’s educational capabilities, while helping to make the aircraft more self-sustaining. Information about flights is available on Doc’s website at www.B29Doc.com/rides. And there’s more in the offing for Doc’s educational capacity: Doc’s Friends has already raised more than $5 million to build a 32,000-square-foot hangar and education facility in Wichita, Kansas, to house its prized aircraft. Starting this October, the building will let visitors see Doc and learn about the role of the B-29 and America’s wartime construction capacity that did so much to ensure victory in World War II. Wells said the push is on to raise an additional $1 million to fully enhance the Wichita facility as a STEM education facility. Doc and its crew are now greeting AirVenture visitors on Boeing Plaza.

THE DOCTOR WILL see you now. Doc the B-29, that is. The Boeing Superfortress that first came to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh last year with an amazing back story of perseverance made a return visit to Oshkosh this year. Still looking fit and polished, Doc has logged about 45 flying hours since its previous AirVenture visit, with a total time of 80 hours since restoration. Tony Mazzolini, the unstoppable steward who extracted Doc from the desert and guided it to restoration, described a recent flight he made. “The plane was flawless,” he said. “It’s running like a Swiss watch.” He attributes this to the efforts of the restoration crew, who “made everything first class or better.” Doc is performing up to specifications, Tony said, with “zero surprises.” That includes a fuel burn of 100 gph per

‘Airplanes Have Always Been in My Blood’ 10-year old dreams of flying UPS cargo planes BY BARBARA A. SCHMITZ
TAYLOR PEEFF, of Louisville, Kentucky, is one focused 10-year-old who can’t wait to turn 15 so she can take the private pilot written test. And when she’s not drawing, practicing karate, playing soccer, or flying a simulator, she is reading and studying for the FAA exam, or selling suckers and homemade jewelry to pay for flying lessons. That focus has given her a little bit of celebrity status when, after attending Women in Aviation’s Girls in Aviation Day last year, UPS chose Taylor, EAA 1263289, for its Wishes Delivered program. She was given a tour of Worldport by UPS pilot Capt. Gloria Hatcher, and got to co-pilot a six-seater Beechcraft, with the help of Capt. Dave. A video of her experience can be found at https://WishesDelivered.UPS.com/ girl-pilot/. Coincidentally, her father is an airplane mechanic for UPS. “I like to stay busy,” Taylor said. “I don’t like to be bored.” She should have no trouble staying busy this week at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Taylor and her family — parents Cindi and Luke, and 9-year-old brother, Grant — are first-time visitors to the fly-in convention. Taylor said she is most excited to see the warbirds, some of the new planes, and the air shows. But she’s also excited to meet new people. In fact, she will be introducing Lt. Col. Olga Custodio, a former T-38 instructor and female Hispanic military pilot, on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Theater in the Woods. “Airplanes have always been in my blood,” said Taylor, who has wanted to become a pilot since age 4. Recently, she has also been busy logging hours. While the Beechcraft was Taylor’s first flight in a small airplane, she followed that up with a Young Eagles flight in a Zenith 750 in November 2017, as well as another small plane, a helicopter, and the Ford TriMotor, where she was able to fly as co-pilot. Homeschooled and entering the fifth grade, Taylor eventually hopes to go to college and fly cargo planes. For now, however, she is happy sharing her love of aviation with others her age. At a recent Girl Scout Aviation Day, for example, she served as a role model that girls could be interested in aviation. “And a friend says I helped to get her daughter interested in aviation, too,” she said.

Letters in the Sky GhostWriter shares messages over the EAA grounds BY MEGAN ESAU
EVERY YEAR DURING EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, hundreds of photos flood social media feeds that show a sea of airplanes on the grounds and big white letters in the sky that let people know where all the fun is happening: EAA. The messages seemingly appear out of nowhere, but 14,000 feet in the air, Nathan Hammond is burning 2 gallons of smoke oil per minute and pulling up to 4.5g in his GhostWriter Super Chipmunk. Nathan grew up around the airplane while his father ferried it all across the country for Steve and Suzanne Oliver, who flew it in air shows from 1988 until 2015 as the Pepsi SkyDancer. When they retired in 2015, Nathan renamed the airplane GhostWriter, and
has since performed everywhere from Alaska to South America. Each letter takes about a minute to a minute and a half to write, and if the weather conditions are ideal, the message will hang in the sky for 20 to 30 minutes before it clears away to a blank canvas. “The shorter the message the better because … you don’t want to lose the interest of the audience, and the shorter you can keep it, the better the message stays together,” Nathan said. As for any special flying techniques used in skywriting, Nathan said they are a closely guarded secret. “It’s a magic trick,” he said. “‘How in the world do they do that?’ One of the things that I think a lot of people don’t
understand is we write everything flat. It’s not up and down. We’re not doing loops, we’re not doing rolls, we’re not aerobatic, but it’s all written flat on the horizon, and placement is key so that the letters are right side up and not upside down.” One challenge skywriters face is that the physical demands the g’s place on a pilot’s body speed up their internal rhythm and can result in the letters being different sizes if the pilot doesn’t pace
him or herself. Nathan’s go-to for keeping the rhythm? Music. “I have this uncanny ability to sing the Scooby-Doo theme song — I can sing that song the same rhythm, the same tempo, whether I’m laying in bed at 50 beats per minute on my heart, or in the airplane at 130 beats a minute pulling g’s,” he said with a laugh. “I’ll sing that periodically as I’m skywriting just so that it gets me back into center.” For Nathan, skywriting is all about sharing the magic with the community of people who seem to perpetually have their eyes on the sky. “The best thing that I love is when somebody takes a picture of their airplane or them standing on the grounds at EAA with that big EAA written up in the sky, because to me, that just screams, you have arrived at Oshkosh,” he said. “There’s no question when you see somebody’s picture and there’s a thousand airplanes in the background and #OSH18 is written in the sky or EAA or the big smiley faces, it’s all about the people. That’s what I love about it.”

THE AMERICAN BARNSTORMERS Tour flew 12 vintage Travel Air biplanes to five cities in five states over the past three weeks before arriving at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 on Sunday, July 22. The three-week tour began in Jefferson City, Missouri, on July 5, and continued through Ames, Iowa; Watertown, South Dakota; and Brainerd, Minnesota, before the penultimate stop in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Five of the 12 late-1920s vintage biplanes sold rides at each stop, with the other airplanes on static display. The 12 tour airplanes are on display in the Vintage area near EAA’s own 1929 Travel Air E-4000, which works all summer giving rides off the grass runway at Pioneer Airport, behind the EAA Aviation Museum. This is believed to be the largest gathering of Travel Air biplanes in decades, possibly since they left the factory. These airplanes have an impressive pedigree, as the original Travel Air Manufacturing Company was founded by Lloyd Stearman, Clyde Cessna, and Walter Beech. Clay Adams, EAA 729846 and an airline pilot with 3,000 hours of flying time in Travel Airs, was one of the
organizers of the first tour more than 10 years ago. He really enjoys the experience of giving people rides in these classic biplanes. “I like to share my experience,” he said. “I want to leave an impression of what we’ve done with this in the future compared to the past.”
“Everyone’s all about the new, new, new, but it’s like you get in this plane and you almost travel back in time.” — Clay Adams
Amy Reiss, an avid pilot who has served as ground crew on the tour, appreciates the chance to show people what flying was like several decades ago. “Everyone’s all about the new, new, new, but it’s like you get in this plane and you almost travel back in time,” she said. “It’s unlike anything else, and it’s just an amazing honor too.”

CHAPTER CAMPING PROGRAM UNIFIES MEMBERS More than 20 campsites used by program members this year BY TI WINDISCH
EAA’S CHAPTER CAMPING program, which allows EAA chapters to reserve joined campsites to form a common area for the chapter, is being utilized by dozens of chapters to experience EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018. EAA Chapter Field Representative David Leiting said 52 chapters are participating in the chapter camping program this year. Since the program began in 2016, it has grown in popularity each year. “I always tell people, you don’t know your chapter members until you spend a week camping with them at AirVenture,” David said. The chapters can reserve up to six sites each and they get to pick a location anywhere in the campground with a few exceptions, such as Paul’s Woods. David said a total of 206 campsites were used in the chapter camping program this year, with roughly four campsites reserved per chapter. “The chapter camping program is a great benefit for any chapter, especially those traveling from long distances,” David said.

EAA Chapter 59 from McGregor, Texas, made use of the chapter camping program for the first time this year. Chapter 59 President Phil Perry, EAA Lifetime 834284, said the organization of the program was perfect for his chapter. “It’s awesome,” Phil said. “We gave them an idea of where we wanted to be, and everything just worked out really well in regards to location; they put us
almost exactly where we wanted to be. It gave us a good opportunity to get coordinated and do stuff together as a chapter.” Phil said Chapter 59 members will gather at the chapter campsite on Wednesday for a chapter social, where members of the chapter can inform each other of what’s going on in Oshkosh. “On Wednesday night we’re going to all try and get together between the end of the air show and the night air show just to have a social and get everyone together, and make that a time where we can all connect and share information that we found on the field,” Phil said. Chapter 59 has 27 people located in their chapter camping headquarters, which is made up of six adjacent campsites. Phil estimates around 50 total members will be across Oshkosh. “We’re looking forward to being home base,” Phil said. “We’ve got a cooler here with cold drinks and a bucket full of snacks. Just being at a place conveniently located, that was one of our goals and we were able to accomplish that, and be a retreat for our members.”

SIX MONTHS AFTER air traffic control privatization language was removed from an FAA reauthorization bill in the U.S. House of Representatives in February, scoring a victory for general aviation, EAA continues to monitor for any threats of the issue resurfacing. The proposal for ATC privatization in H.R. 2997 by Rep. Bill Schuster would have removed air traffic control services from FAA oversight to that of a private board dominated by airline interests that would give little voice to general aviation or consideration to GA’s operational concerns. Numerous nonpartisan watchdog agencies, including the Congressional Budget Office, the Government Accountability Office, and the Congressional Research Service, reported that ATC privatization would have added a projected $100 billion to the federal deficit, would not speed up modernization, and could have been unconstitutional. EAA, along with AOPA, GAMA, and NBAA, was among a coalition of more than 200 aviation organizations, consumer advocates, mayors throughout the U.S., and some conservative groups that worked tirelessly to halt H.R. 2997. Throughout 2017, EAA members also made their voices heard to their representatives, sending 11,500 messages to lawmakers during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh alone. The latest major attempt to privatize air traffic control came in late April 2018, when Schuster made a manager’s amendment to a bill — H.R. 4 — that would have created an advisory council again dominated by the airlines. The amendment was dropped after just one day, following a rapid response by the general aviation community contacting congressional representatives to oppose the plan. On June 21, 2018, six associations representing the general aviation industry,
including EAA, issued a statement strongly opposing President Donald Trump’s administration’s inclusion of the alreadyfailed idea of ATC privatization in its government reorganization proposal. The reorganization proposal came less than two weeks after United Airlines CEO Oscar Munoz indicated the airlines could soon develop a renewed effort to separate air traffic control from the FAA. As reported in Politico by Tanya Snyder, Munoz told reporters on June 7 that after the airlines coalesce around a plan, they’ll “provide that input and then work with the government to make that move forward.” EAA and other GA organizations support the continued modernization of the national airspace system, but not at the cost of equal access to the airspace or minimizing GA’s important role within the nation’s aviation infrastructure.

GREG SHELTON RECEIVES BILL BARBER AWARD BY KATIE HOLLIDAY-GREENLEY
TONIGHT GREG SHELTON will be presented with the Bill Barber Award for Showmanship having been announced by World Airshow News as the 2018 honoree last month. Past recipients of the award include air show favorites like Sean D. Tucker and historical figures like Bob Hoover, so Greg will certainly be among the greats. “I was surprised — I didn’t expect it,” Greg said of getting the news that he had been chosen to receive this award. “It’s an honor. … It’s an honor that they would pick me for the award. The previous Bill Barber Award recipients — I need to thank them. … I need to thank my original wing walker Ashley Battles … and then my current wing walker, Ashley Shelton. She needs to be recognized, too.” Greg’s fascination with aviation began when he was a child as his father was a U.S. Navy pilot and his childhood home in northern California was near a fire bomber operation. He began taking flight lessons in the early 1980s in a Piper J-3 Cub, but his heart was already set on flying aerobatics.
“I think the first time I soloed away from the airport, the first time they let me leave the pattern, I tried to loop my Cub. I did loop it — it wasn’t very pretty,” he said with a laugh. Before he’d finished his certificate, Greg bought a Starduster Too to allow him to pursue aerobatics and
soon after bought and restored an AT-6, which ultimately led to his entry into the air show world. “[A friend] … had an AT-6 and had sold some air shows and had an engine failure and couldn’t do the shows,” he said. “He asked if I wanted to do it so I did, and I was hooked from then on.” Greg performed in the AT-6 for 16 years before he sold the Texan to make room for his current favorite air show plane: the FM-2 Wildcat. His other favorite airplane, if he had to choose one, would be his 450 Super Stearman that he began flying wing-walking routines in, which he said have had a great impact on his success. Now, after nearly 30 years in the air show business, Greg said his best advice for aspiring pilots is to master the basics. “I strongly recommend that they get some tailwheel time in an airplane they can’t see out of,” he said. “Get some spin training and some aerobatic training if they can, even if it’s just a little bit.” He also added that with air show aerobatics, it’s important to “walk before you run,” and to be proficient in aerobatic flying before flying in front of an audience. As for those who want to fly aerobatics for fun, Greg’s advice is short and sweet. “Just go do it!” he said with a laugh. Tonight’s presentation will be held at Theater in the Woods from 7 to 7:45 p.m. Shelton is scheduled to fly at approximately 5 p.m. in his Wildcat.

ALLIED COLLABORATION SAW a miracle American engine and a durable British airf r a m e c o m b i n e d t o m a ke t h e American-built DH-4 of 1918. Arguably the first American-made combat aircraft of any consequence, the DH-4 served into the 1920s (a few into the 1930s) and gave rise to mail plane derivatives. During this week, a DH-4 that is being groomed for flight in September is on static display at several prominent AirVenture venues. This rare biplane was the subject of a Warbirds in Review session Monday afternoon. Geoffrey de Havilland’s 1916 design first saw service with the Royal Flying Corps in 1917. Powered by a variety of English engines, the DH-4 was a viable bomber of the day. When the U.S. entered the war, the need for combat aircraft was acute. The DH-4 was then selected for production in the U.S. The rapidly designed American V-12 liquid-cooled Liberty motor was chosen to power American DH-4s. This 400-hp engine proved so impressive that later British DH-9 versions employed the American engine. In the 1950s, an era when too few people cared about the aging aircraft of World War I, movie pilots Paul Mantz and Frank Tallman scoured the countryside for
examples they could put before Hollywood cameras. A Mantz DH-4 later found in Washington made its way to the Friends of Jenny organization in Tennessee, where new life was breathed into the vintage hardware in time for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018. Its original Liberty engine, built by Lincoln, once was part of the legendary Cole Palen’s Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome collection in upstate New York. The airframe is an unmodified example built by Dayton-Wright, but some other DH-4s received welded tube fuselages in the 1920s as upgrades. Dorian Walker shepherds the DH-4, both in restoration and exhibition. He points out details like the original metal mounts for the ample wooden wing struts. They’re fine for static display, but new metal will afford a known margin of safety when this DH-4 tests its wings later this year. True to its history, this DH-4 has only a skid, not a wheel, under the tail. So it’s limited to flights starting and ending on grass fields. The group plans to truck the DH to show destinations, where it will be reassembled and rigged (they’ve done it in seven hours) before flying. On the Oshkosh grounds, the DH-4 impresses visitors because of its large
size and its pristine vintage appearance. Old black and white photos only go so far in describing the American DH-4s’ camouflage scheme; the actual airplane displays it eloquently. And that motivates Dorian, who said the group rebuilt this rare icon “to pay tribute to American aviation.” He delights in calling the World War I biplane warbird No. 1. If transportation can be arranged, Friends of Jenny wants to take this DH-4 to the same airfield in France where, a century ago, American DH-4s flew fatal missions in support of ground troops, undertaking some of the first aerial resupply sorties for trapped troops. The DH-4 restoration blends timeless antiquity with a crew that includes a number of students, as the old hands invite young people to become involved with this brand of historical preservation.

Zenith-Based Homebuilt Looks Old-School Mark Phillips’ Elixir draws from vintage airplanes BY TI WINDISCH
MARK PHILLIPS, EAA 496947, did not change much about the overall flight characteristics of his Elixir, which is based on a Zenith CH 701 kit. He did change just about everything else about it, though. Elixir is registered as a model 701.1, serial No. 1 (and only). It first flew in April 2018, and Mark was excited to bring it to Oshkosh for the first time after his trip to the 1995 fly-in convention first inspired him to pursue aviation and become a pilot. Ten years after his first visit Mark brought his first homebuilt back to Oshkosh, a Van’s RV-6A. That airplane, named Mojo¸ contained some tweaks from the original design as well. Mark calls them bouts of “deviant behavior.” For his second project, Mark decided to go with an airframe he’d previously had a great experience in during his time working for Jabiru Aircraft.
“The most fun I’d ever had on a flying machine was my first flight in a Zenith 701 with the doors off,” Mark said. “The folks at Jabiru had built it to develop a firewall forward package for their 2200 engines. They said they could hear me laughing out loud as I flew over the hangar. I’d never flew anything like it before in my life. That’s why this is here.” The basic airframe of the Zenith is still there, although plenty of changes are easily observable. There’s a faux-radiator on the front
of the cowl, the panel is all-wooden with a solid bird’s-eye maple stick, and a completely custom nosewheel can be found underneath. Mark did as much of the work himself as he could, including engraving the wood and metal in most sections aside from the stenciled “Experimental” above each door. The inspiration for a lot of his changes came from his last few trips to Oshkosh, when he discovered a love for vintage airplanes such as the Stinson Reliant. Elixir contains almost entirely wood and metal parts in an effort to replicate the feel of an airplane from 80-plus years ago. Still, although the appreciation for the vintage airplanes is clearly there, Mark said he’s well aware this is different than those airplanes. “I just love those ’30s airplanes,” Mark said. “Call it an homage. It’s not the same; I won’t even begin to say this is anything like those.”

Stratos Debuts Kit-Built VLJ Experimental jet is based on model 714 personal jet unveiled here last year BY JAMES WYNBRANDT
STRATOS AIRCRAFT HAS introduced the Stratos 716X, an experimental kit VLJ based on the Stratos 714 singleengine personal jet the Redmond, Oregon, company debuted at last year’s fly-in. The six-place 714 was projected to have a top speed of 400 knots true airspeed, a 41,000-foot service ceiling, and 1,500 nm range and the 716X is expected to deliver similar performance. An owner-assist build program will be included in the kit’s cost, and the first 716X is under construction by the unidentified launch customer, said Stratos engineering manager Carsten Sundin. The price of the kit will be announced in the fourth quarter after the company develops the kit building process, he said.
New kit is based on Stratos 714, shown above.
Program director John Hadlich estimated build time would require about 2,500 hours and could be completed in six months. However, the 716X is simply a bridge to a Part 23-certified Stratos 716 aircraft the company intends to build,
Sundin said pointing to the path Epic Aircraft is blazing in bringing its experimental kitbuilt Epic LT turboprop to the certified market as the E1000. Stratos (Main Aircraft Display Booths 16-17) already has significant design and
machining capability and manufacturing capacity, and can make 99 percent of the aircraft parts in house, Sundin said. The company is fully funded for kit production and will seek additional investment for the certified version after the 716X and its build processes have been refined. Once those funds are in place, certification would take four years, Hadlich said. Since last year’s unveiling of the Stratos VLJ, the 714 prototype has completed an additional 185 hours of flight time on 130 test flights the company said, and has been flown at altitudes of 25,000 feet and airspeeds up to 370 KTAS. Noted test pilot Dave Morss, who has a lead role in the flight-test program, said the 714 has been “a pleasure to fly,” singling out the sidestick control as a feature he particularly enjoys.
This is Epic.

One Week Wonder Build Kicks Off Help build an RV-12iS on the Four Corners this week BY BARBARA A. SCHMITZ
“ONE WEEK!” the crowd chanted. “One week!” “Can you do this in a week?” a volunteer identified only as Capt. Yaw yelled out. “Yes!” the crowd shouted back. “In how long?” he roared. “One week!” they bellowed back. The grand opening of One Week Wonder on Monday resembled a pep rally, meant to get the building team riled up and ready to go. And go they must, if they and visitors to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 are to finish building a Van’s Aircraft RV-12iS by 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 29. “This is a special event,” said Jack J. Pelton, EAA CEO and chairman of the board, at the press conference before the build officially started. “It’s gotten to be an EAA tradition to highlight that homebuilding is really something that anyone can do,” he said. “But we certainly couldn’t do it without the sponsors who made it possible — Van’s Aircraft, with donation of the aircraft, along with Rotax, Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co., Sherwin Williams, and the list goes on.” As Pelton motioned to the digital clock on the back wall of the work area, the countdown began. A sea of volunteers immediately started unpacking the box of parts as convention visitors lined up to have their turn helping with the build. You can help build One Week Wonder at EAA’s Four Corners, located at the intersection of Knapp Street and Celebration Way, now through Sunday.

YOUNG EAGLES RAFFLE SUPPORTS EAA’S MISSION FOR 11TH YEAR BY TI WINDISCH
EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH 2018 attendees can enter to win a 2018 Ford Mustang GT Convertible through the 2018 Young Eagles Raffle, which supports the effort to get more young people involved in aviation. Since the early years of EAA’s Young Eagles program, the EAA Young Eagles Raffle has supported Young Eagles’ mission of spreading The Spirit of Aviation by raffling off a new car, which has been a Ford Mustang since 2007. The program has garnered $515,000 since 2014 and is run strictly by volunteers, including Jon Maxwell, who has been the chairman of the EAA Young Eagles Raffle for six years and spent another six volunteering at the raffle before that. Raffle tickets are $100, and a maximum of 1,500 are sold each year starting months before EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Tickets are sold until Sunday at noon, while supplies last. They were sold out
by Saturday during AirVenture last year, so those interested in entering should do so sooner rather than later if tickets are still available. The drawing that determines the EAA Young Eagles Raffle winner takes place on Sunday at 3 p.m., and will be streamed on Facebook Live this year. Entrants do not need to be present at the drawing to win the new Ford Mustang. Tickets can be purchased at the EAA Aviation Museum in the gift shop, as well as at booths near the Brown Arch and Vintage area, in the Ford Motor Company tent on the grounds, and in the EAA AirVenture Welcome Center, where the Ford Mustang will sit during the week. The drawing will also take place in the Welcome Center. The EAA Young Eagles Raffle is supported by Ford Motor Company, and the 2018 Ford Mustang GT was provided by Kocourek Ford in Wausau.

Making Great Ideas Take Flight UW Oshkosh’s AeroInnovate accelerator program brings budding businesses to AirVenture BY RANDY DUFAULT
ENTREPRENEURS ALL OVER the world continuously dream up new and better ways to accomplish things both big and small. Ultimately, only a small fraction of those great ideas become reality due to the inherent difficulty of finding the knowledge and the capital necessary to take an innovation from concept to the marketplace. By its very nature, aviation is an industry that promotes innovation, and the AeroInnovate program at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh is helping budding businesses make the leap from dream to reality. “AeroInnovate is a business accelerator for early stage aviation, aerospace, and drone startups,” Steve Slocum, director of the program, said. “Right now we are a program of UW Oshkosh, but we are funded by a [Department of Defense] grant. “Our mission is to connect aero innovators wherever they are in the world. We are connecting [them] with mentors and an opportunity to pitch in front of the crowd

at AirVenture at our annual Pitch and Mingle, which is coming up Wednesday. “And for investors and industry professionals, it is an opportunity to see four or five up and coming startups in one spot.”
Each year AeroInnovate selects companies for an eight-week program that culminates at AirVenture. “Seven of those weeks are virtual,” Steve said. “So we feel it’s very accommodating to a startup company.” Within those seven weeks, AeroInnovate pairs the company with one or two core mentors. Other mentors and resources join as needed. “If they require help with aerospace engineering, or they need a wind tunnel, or they need some type of help to continue to develop their minimum viable product, or need to do research, we can help them with that,” Steve said. “We connect them with resources within the aviation, aerospace, and drone communities that they cannot normally be able to connect with — certainly not in a quick manner and certainly not within seven weeks.” Technical help is important, but so is the business aspect. concise executive summary as well as helping to prepare the all-important pitch necessary for attracting investors. AeroInnovate’s Pitch and Mingle event is celebrating its 10th anniversary in conjunction with EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018. Conducted on Wednesday evening at the UW Oshkosh Alumni Welcome and Conference Center, this year’s companies get the opportunity to meet and network with potential investors and the broader aviation community. The accelerator program grew from the Pitch and Mingle event and is now in its fourth year. Steve points to a number of successes including 2015 graduate Grypmat. “Last fall they pitched on Shark Tank, and all five of the sharks were vying for an opportunity to work with Grypmat,” Steve said. “The founder, Tom Burden, was able to make a deal with three of the sharks: Richard Branson, Mark Cuban, and Lori Greiner. He secured capital that helped him continue building his
business and expand his manufacturing. Along with that capital he secured some pretty fantastic relationships.” This year’s class includes four companies: EFX Applied Technology, which is developing interactive alert systems that identify and warn personnel of danger zones; Kerr Avionics, which is creating vision systems to detect landing zone lights up to 300 percent earlier; Ramper Innovations, which designs and manufactures products for airlines and ground servicing companies; and Vita Inclinata, which designs load stability systems for helicopter hoisting. All four companies are exhibiting their ideas in the Innovation Showcase at Aviation Gateway Park. Another noted program graduate is TakeFlight Interactive. As a participant in the accelerator, founder and CEO Brandon Seltz teamed up with EAA to offer the Virtual Flight Academy, a new benefit available to members and Young Eagles.

VINTAGE DISCUSSES STATE OF ORGANIZATION AT TOWN HALL Initiatives include growing VAA member base BY MEGAN ESAU

THE VINTAGE AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION discussed the state of the organization as well as the development of a five-year plan during its annual town hall meeting at the Vintage Hangar on Monday morning. VAA President Susan Dusenbury shared that the organization is financially sound and, after EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 concludes, plans to firm up the ideas for its five-year plan, which was first conceptualized by the late Ron Alexander, former VAA president. An outline for the plan includes site improvements in the Vintage area on the AirVenture grounds, reworking the aircraft parking layout to maximize parking spots, the creation of maintenancefocused youth programs, and growing VAA’s membership base. “Vintage Aircraft Association is the number one organization in the world supporting vintage aircraft,” Susan said, pointing out that the more members the organization has, the more talent to cultivate good ideas. However, Susan said VAA’s membership base is already one of the strongest and most active of the EAA divisions. She reported that 5 percent of EAA’s more than 200,000 members belong to VAA, VAA volunteers make up 10 percent of the volunteers on the EAA grounds, and those volunteers do 15 percent of the hourly work during AirVenture.
VAA President Susan Dusenbury speaks at the organization’s town hall on Monday.
A number of VAA members offered suggestions, including better support for the upkeep of vintage aircraft. Susan said EAA and VAA are currently in talks to see if certain vintage aircraft can be recategorized. “This is just the beginning thinking stages — putting all of these vintage, unsupported airplanes into a different category to make it easier to maintain them,” Susan said. She said this new category would likely lie somewhere between the standard and experimental categories. On the issue of limited aircraft parking at AirVenture, Susan said beginning in 2018, with the exception of the special aircraft parking areas such as past grand champions, parking in the Vintage area will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Mooney Celebrates 70th Anniversary at AirVenture 2018 AS THE GATES for EAA AirVenture 2018 swing open, Mooney International is celebrating its 70th anniversary in a very big way. Hot on the heels of FAA certification and first deliveries of its award-winning M20 Acclaim and Ovation Ultras last year, the company hasn’t stopped moving forward at blistering speed. This year’s production of both of the new M20 Ultra models is sold out, and the order book for next year’s deliveries promises to be even stronger — thanks to a unique benefit program for owners, called Fill & Fly, the company is launching at AirVenture this year. Additionally, the new M20 Ultras have just received certification from Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority, opening up sales for both new aircraft models in the region. “70 Years of Innovation is our theme for AirVenture this year,” said Lance Phillips, marketing director at Mooney International. “But it’s so much more than a simple slogan,” he continued. “It’s actually a way of life at our factory. Mooney aircraft have stood the test of time because the craftsmen who build them are multigenerational artisans who, in many cases, have parents, neighbors, and friends who have also produced these remarkable airplanes for many years.” But the 70-year milestone isn’t the only tie to Mooney’s rich history visitors will learn this week. Thirty years ago, the first long-body Mooney, the M20L Porsche PFM 3200, taxied from the factory for its first delivery. The M20L was remarkable for many reasons. It was the first certified pistonengine aircraft with electronic ignition and a single-lever power control. It had dual-electrical systems, and its long body was the forerunner of the fuselage used today in the new M20 Ultras. To highlight this 30-year milestone, Mooney will
be celebrating at AirVenture with Porsche, as that company is also recognizing its own 70th birthday in 2018. And to make the celebration even more memorable, Mooney has placed Porsche’s latest speed demon, a 911 GT3 RS, in its exhibit space.

“Seventy years is certainly a very special anniversary, but we’re not stopping here.” — Lance Phillips, Marketing Director of Mooney
But perhaps the biggest news Mooney will announce at AirVenture this year will be the launch of Fill & Fly — a first of its kind program designed to make ownership of a new Mooney easier than ever. Fill & Fly covers the costs of all consumables for three years, as well as the cost of all required inspections and regular maintenance. And this coverage is in addition to the company’s existing standard three-year warranty on engine, airframe, and avionics for every new aircraft. In addition, the Fill & Fly program also provides a $10,000 flight-training allocation for owners to use at their discretion. In sum, owners can fill their new airplane with fuel and fly it — and be worry-free when they do. “Seventy years is certainly a very special anniversary,” said Lance. “But we’re not stopping here. We want to take ease of ownership, celebration of speed, and enjoyment of the Mooney brand to an entirely new level. Our customers deserve nothing less — and we have never been in a better position to make it happen. And just as important, I can say with great confidence that there are many, many more good things to come.”

Vashon Ranger LSA Debuts at AirVenture Affordable two-place line features Dynon glass panels BY JAMES WYNBRANDT
VASHON AIRCRAFT IS publicly unveiling its new Ranger R7 S-LSA aircraft line for the first time at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018. Powered by a 100-hp Continental O-200-D engine, the two-place side-byside Ranger was designed to be “an aircraft that’s fun to fly, that you could get in with your boots dirty and feel okay, that’s affordable, and has safety features” not common to most LSA, said Scott Taylor, Vashon’s general manager. Among the design highlights: the landing gear is “extremely robust,” for operating in the bush; the cargo area is large enough to hold a full-size bicycle; and the seats fold down forward, creating a large, flat space large enough to sleep in. It’s also easy to fly, with docile handling characteristics. “Most people come away [from a demo flight] saying, ‘Hey, I’m a pretty good pilot,’” said Scott. “That’s because it’s a pretty good airplane.”
At a maximum weight of 1,320 pounds (basic empty weight is 875 pounds; useful load is 445 pounds), the Ranger can take off in 315 feet, climb at 1,035 fpm, and cruise at 117 knots. Max range is 430 nm. While in development for five years, the company purposely kept the program under wraps until March 2018, when the Ranger had already earned FAA certification. “Aviation is littered with companies that say, ‘Look at us,’ but we kept it a secret until we could deliver,” said Scott, noting that three of the four Rangers on display have already been sold. The fourth is the company demo airplane. “Giving us your money means you’ll get an airplane, and not 10 years from now,” he said. But your Ranger won’t be delivered tomorrow, either. Vashon can produce 20 Rangers per year, and the company has more than 50 orders in hand, said Scott.
TUESDAY, JULY 24, 2018
The base price of a standard Ranger (the Yellowstone) is $99,500, and to keep the aircraft affordable, just four options — two paint schemes and two instrument panel upgrades — are available. If basic white isn’t your color choice, the Rainier paint scheme adds $2,500 to the price, while a custom scheme or the Founders livery, both depicting a lush wilderness tableau on the fuselage, are $9,500. All Rangers feature a Dynon glass panel avionics suite with two-axis autopilot, and include dual flight controls and dual hydraulic toe brakes, adjustable rudder pedals, and 6.00-6 size main gear tires. The Glacier panel option includes a 10-inch SkyView HDX, while the Redwood features dual 10-inch SkyView HDX touchscreen displays. The cost of a fully optioned R7 tops out at about $125,000.
It’s not a coincidence the ethos of affordability Dynon emphasizes in its avionics is mirrored in the Ranger. Dynon founder and CEO John Torode also founded and owns Vashon. Both companies are headquartered in Woodinville, Washington. For Scott, debuting the Ranger at Oshkosh is particularly gratifying. “When I was 16 years old, getting my license and working as a lineboy, my buddy said, ‘What do you want to do in aviation some day?’ I said, ‘One day, I want to have an airplane company with a new airplane and debut it to the world.’” Vashon has chosen the largest stage in the aviation world upon which to fulfill Scott’s dream — and that of many aspiring aircraft owners.
“Giving us your money means you’ll get an airplane, and not 10 years from now.” – Scott Taylor

Improve Your Safety and Proficiency in IFR and VFR Flight
Through EAA’s network of local chapters, the EAA IMC Club offers monthly chapter meetings in which instrument-rated pilots can share experience, promote safety, and help improve one another’s flying skills by working through real-world IMC scenarios.
Non-instrument rated pilots looking to improve their flying skills now have an excellent new resource through EAA’s VMC Club. Based on the popular IMC Club concept, the VMC Club provides organized “hangar flying” for pilots who fly primarily under visual flight rules.
All EAA members are eligible to participate in their local EAA chapters.

BY KATIE HOLLIDAY-GREENLEY
AVIDYNE PARTNERS WITH L3 FOR REBATE DEAL
EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH is made possible in part by more than 5,000 volunteers, many of whom are participants in EAA’s Collegiate Volunteer Program. The program allows college students and college-age attendees to experience AirVenture from a new perspective while gaining knowledge and experience in a variety of fields. “Our true purpose for the entire Collegiate Volunteer Program is to get the next generation involved in volunteerism — to see the value in it,” said Cassie Bruss, EAA HR business partner and volunteer program manager. “The Collegiate Tailgate also offers a good networking opportunity.” The Collegiate Tailgate, which will be held tonight in Aviation Gateway Park from 5-6:30 p.m., is a great way for college-age attendees to meet other young aviation enthusiasts and industry organizations. The tailgate includes cookout foods such as brats and burgers as well as a DJ, a bags tournament, and the opportunity to win prizes in a bean bag toss.
AVIDYNE AVIONICS ANNOUNCED on Monday in the first press conference of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018 that the company is partnering with L3 Commercial Aviation to offer a cash rebate to those who buy both an Avidyne IFD550 and an L3 Lynx NGT-9000. Avidyne President Dan Schwinn, EAA 360170, said Avidyne has always worked well with other companies and this collaboration with L3 is another example of that. Customers who purchase both products are eligible for a $2,500 cash back rebate. Schwinn said the offer would be good starting Monday, and would run for two months, although it may be extended or expanded depending on how successful the promotion was. L3 announced a new software upgrade that will be available in August for Lynx NGT-9000 operators that provides performance, start-up, and compatibility enhancements for the ADS-B transponder and display system.

According to Cassie, the tailgate is also often attended by college representatives and this year will include a presentation by EAA Chapter Field Representative David Leiting. A former president of EAA Chapter 1342 at the University of North Dakota, David will share insights on how to start an EAA chapter at your college or university. The Collegiate Tailgate is sponsored by Aviation Supplies & Academics and Endeavor Air, and is free to all college-age attendees. Advance sign-up is not required.

it in a dramatic fashion in a film like this and then they can come out and actually speak with the airmen.” A line of people featuring plenty of young KidVenture attendees formed to greet and receive autographs from both of the Tuskegee Airmen. McGee said he enjoys getting the chance to communicate with young people. “I like to talk especially to young people because they’re the future of our country,” McGee said. “To be able to share with them past experiences and help them get the feel for what aviation means for the country is what it’s all about. And it keeps me out of the rocking chair.” Peyton Sievers got the chance to speak with Hardy early on Monday during her fourth AirVenture. She said she knew about the Tuskegee Airmen prior to the event, and was excited to meet one of the airmen. “It was awesome,” Peyton said. “It was really cool to meet him, he was really nice.” Hardy said he enjoys sharing the importance of aviation with kids.
“We like to impress young people with the spirit of flying,” Hardy said. “A lot of people, they’re not sure what they want to do. But I started flying overseas in a P-51 at 18. I hadn’t even driven an automobile before. I never dreamed that that would happen growing up. But the sky’s the limit.”

NASA FIGHTS FOR FUTURE OF COMMERCIAL SUPERSONIC FLIGHTS OVER LAND BY MATT KAMLET, NASA ARMSTRONG FLIGHT RESEARCH CENTER AND SASHA ELLIS, NASA LANGLEY RESEARCH CENTER
JUST OVER 70 years ago, Capt. Chuck Yeager became the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound, with the help of NASA’s predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). Expanded supersonic flight, in which all air travelers can get to their destinations in half the time both internationally and domestically, remains a dream, but NASA brings it closer to reality. Just as Yeager’s Bell X-1 achieved the first supersonic level flight, NASA’s newest supersonic X-plane, the X-59 QueSST, seeks to advance that legacy into a new era of aviation, through the goal of reducing the sonic boom into a quieter sonic “thump.” The loud sonic boom, typically heard on the ground below when an aircraft traveling faster than the speed of sound passes above, is the primary factor in the restriction of supersonic flight over land. The sonic boom travels along with the aircraft as long as it flies supersonic, which means much of the ground beneath the flightpath is exposed to it, including communities. NASA’s efforts in supersonic flight research have

culminated into the potential to reduce this boom to a softer “thump,” which would be barely audible, and potentially go unnoticed. This may open the door to the future of commercial supersonic flight over land. NASA’s X-59, currently under construction by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company in Palmdale, California, will take to the skies in 2022 to demonstrate this quieter supersonic flight for select communities around the country.
Nils Larson, chief pilot at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in California and lead pilot for the X-59, will be at EAA AirVenture to discuss the project and its goals. His forum “Zoom Without the Boom” is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. today at Forum Pavilion 4. Further information about the X-59 is available at the NASA tent, located at Aviation Gateway Park.

BOEING, THROUGH ITS subsidiary Jeppesen, has announced a new agreement with the Aeroclub de Reus of Spain, providing a new version of Boeing eAcademy training services to enhance the flying club’s ability to train a new generation of general aviation pilots. The new eAcademy version incorporates the same e-learning programs that are being used in global airline trainings. “These new capabilities allow us to take our training capabilities to the next level of participation and advanced learning,” said Enric Moralla, president of Aeroclub de Reus. “We are looking to increase our training output using these capabilities, with a goal of training more than 100 pilots annually, while increasing our total number of airplanes available to the club.” The Aeroclub de Reus has applied with the civil aviation authority in
Madrid to gain necessary approvals to use the eAcademy training system with its members and plans to begin the training program later this fall. The Aeroclub de Reus was founded in 1935, providing a platform for the advancement of general aviation flight in the region. “Our engagement with the Aeroclub de Reus illustrates our ability to provide a world-class training system with robust and adaptable capabilities, allowing for global, scalable deployment for learning related to general aviation flying,” said William Ampofo, vice president of business and general aviation for Boeing Global Services. “We are privileged to play a role in inspiring Spain’s new generation of pilots taking to the skies, and providing them a quality training experience backed by the instruction and foundation of our integrated training services.”
