THE OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH

TOP STORY

TO ALL EAA MEMBERS AND VISITORS:

Welcome to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022, our annual convention that also just happens to be the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration. For one magical week, all things aviation converge on what becomes the world’s busiest airport, right here in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. We think of it as aviation’s family reunion — if you’ve been here before, I’m sure you’ll agree, and if this is your first trip, I think you’ll see what we mean. Oshkosh is a special place, and that comes in no small part from our founder Paul Poberezny’s well-known Oshkosh Rules: Treat everyone with kindness, be respectful around all aircraft, and pick up that stray piece of trash you see on the grounds. As you walk around, you really will be hard-pressed to find a single scrap of litter. If you do, you’ll likely be competing with other visitors for the chance to pick it up and throw it away properly. That simple fact speaks volumes about EAA members and the pride of ownership they feel for our annual convention, and the civility and camaraderie that make this event different from so many other large gatherings. It truly is unlike anything else.

WEATHER

When you come to Oshkosh, you’re surrounded by people from all over the world, all of whom have two things in common — their love of aviation, and the fact that there is nowhere else they’d rather be. That’s an infectious attitude, one that not only rejuvenates us as individuals, but has a similar restorative effect on the aviation community as a whole. It’s all but impossible to leave Oshkosh without having more friends than you did when you got here. By the way, there’s one more rule on Paul’s list, and that’s to be sure to thank any of our 6,000-plus volunteers you run into. There’s simply no way this could happen without them. So, as you explore this year’s AirVenture, whether it’s your first visit or you’re a seasoned veteran, have fun, stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and soak up the world of aviation interests that you’ll find only in Oshkosh. Thanks to all of you for your support, and most of all, welcome (back) to aviation’s family reunion! Best regards, JACK J. PELTON CEO AND CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD EXPERIMENTAL AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION

ONE WEEK WONDER RETURNS FOR 2022 THANKS TO THE support of Sonex Aircraft, we’re excited

to announce the return of the One Week Wonder for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022. Starting on Monday, July 25, at 8 a.m., a group of volunteers will build a Sonex Waiex-B, to be completed and ready to taxi one week later, on Sunday, July 31. “The One Week Wonder event brings excitement and enthusiasm to others in the community by showing what it looks like and feels like to build an aircraft from a kit,” said Charlie Becker, EAA’s director of chapters and homebuilding. Just as it has in previous years, the One Week Wonder build in 2022 will provide an excellent opportunity to

show the world that anyone can build an airplane. Attendees will have the chance to pull a rivet, and have their photo taken as a souvenir. The Waiex-B is based on the original Waiex, but it features more cockpit space, a center “Y-stick” option, electric flaps, more panel space, and a 4-gallon increase in fuel capacity. This particular Waiex-B will be a first for Sonex, as it will incorporate the first factorydesigned installation of a Rotax 912 iS powerplant. Stop by the One Week Wonder tent located in the EAA Four Corners area to watch the build in progress, pull a rivet, and even vote on the paint scheme.

Celebrating Van’s Aircraft 50th Anniversary at AirVenture 2022 THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY of the Van’s Aircraft

RV series, which has become the world’s most popular kit airplane, will be a major element of homebuilt aircraft activities at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022. “While aircraft kits have existed for more than a century, it was 50 years ago that Richard VanGrunsven introduced a model that would move the homebuilt movement into an age where kit aircraft would become dominant,” said Charlie Becker, EAA’s director of chapters and homebuilding. “Today, more than 11,000 completed RV models are the direct descendants of that first RV-3 in 1972. We invited all of them to be present at Oshkosh as we celebrate a half-century of success.” A number of special events are planned as part of the 50-year celebration. Those include: • Special Van’s RV parking areas in the Homebuilts area. • Multiple forums and workshops focused on RV aircraft throughout the week. • RV aircraft flying during the daily air shows. • An evening program at Theater in the Woods on Monday, July 25, at 8 p.m., with VanGrunsven highlighting the history of his company. • A presentation introducing the company’s newest aircraft, the RV-15, on Tuesday, July 26, at 8:30 a.m. at Forum Stage 7. VanGrunsven began Van’s Aircraft with a clean design, and then sold plans and a few parts he manufactured himself for those aircraft. Soon the company began manufacturing complete airplane kits and introducing new models that, after 50 years, now includes the latest design — the RV-15. More than 400 kits each year are shipped to builders around the world from the Van’s factory in Aurora, Oregon.

WARBIRDS

YAGEN COLLECTION OF WARBIRDS EXPECTED AT EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH 2022 FOUR FLYING AIRCRAFT from one of the largest flying warbird collections in the world are expected to come to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022, as the Military Aviation Museum of Virginia Beach, Virginia, plans to bring World War II-era airplanes to participate in this year’s event. The four airplanes — a de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito, Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, Goodyear FG-1D Corsair, and North American P-51 Mustang — will be flown to Oshkosh and exhibited in the Warbirds area. Several of these aircraft from the collection will also make appearances on Boeing Plaza, with the schedule to be determined. The appearance is part of the museum’s celebration of its founder, Jerry Yagen, and his aviation achievements. Yagen is scheduled to attend as well. “Jerry Yagen’s passion for warbird aircraft has through the years evolved into one of most magnificent airworthy collections in the world,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. “To have these airplanes as part of the world’s largest annual gathering of warbirds that occurs at Oshkosh every summer makes this year’s event even more special, both in the air and on the ground.” Each aircraft brings a unique story: de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito — This airplane was sold surplus to a Canadian farmer in 1948, where it sat until a Canadian museum acquired it in 1978. The Military Aviation Museum obtained it in 2004 and shipped it to New Zealand for restoration. It made its first flight in 2012 and at the time was the only flying example of the type in the world. The aircraft previously attended AirVenture in 2015.

Curtiss P-40 Warhawk — This aircraft is painted in the markings of David Lee “Tex” Hill of the famed “Flying Tigers” American Volunteer Group based in China. The aircraft was built in 1941 and sent to Great Britain as part of the lend-lease program, and then on to the Soviet Union, where it was lost in action and not recovered for a halfcentury. The P-40 was the aircraft that established the Military Aviation Museum collection. Goodyear FG-1D Corsair — Delivered in May 1945, the Corsair spent much of its military career in storage, thus being one of the lowest-time Corsairs known. The “skull and crossbones” livery honors a hometown hero, Norfolk, Virginia-born Ray Beacham, who flew with the famous VF-17 unit in the South Pacific.

North American P-51D Mustang — Arguably the most iconic American fighter of WWII, the Mustang is a testament to American ingenuity and industrial capability. The Mustang was designed in 1940 with the first flying prototype built in just 120 days. The Military Aviation Museum’s example was built in 1945 and wears the markings of the 353rd Fighter Group. Yagen will also bring his soon-to-be-published book to AirVenture and speak at Warbirds in Review sessions and other venues about building the warbird collection. The aircraft committed to Oshkosh are some of his favorite airplanes, as each played a key role in building the collection.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

Bounty of Activities for Kids at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022 EAA FOUNDER PAUL Poberezny said it from the start: get the kids and families involved

at the annual EAA fly-in and it will become an annual family tradition. The same holds true at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022, as young people will find plenty to do and discover at Oshkosh on July 25-31. Again this year, it’s free admission for all those age 18 and under, thanks in part from support by The Boeing Company. Among the activities on the AirVenture grounds for kids and families in 2022 are: KidVenture: Full activities return this year at Pioneer Airport. It allows young people to explore aviation from several different fronts. Learn how to fly a radiocontrolled airplane, experience flight simulators, and learn aviation history. KidVenture highlights also include A&P booths where kids learn basic building skills, a simulated B-25 flight experience, and life-size replicas of the Mercury 7 and Gemini 7 space capsules. Youth Education Center: EAA’s new youth education area adjacent to the EAA Aviation Museum will be open for exploration during AirVenture week. There will be opportunities to sign up for hands-on projects during the week.

EAA Aviation Museum/KidVenture area: This hands-on area is specifically for our younger visitors and is highly interactive. The centerpiece is the Raptor Gallery, which contains 16 interactive exhibits and focuses on the world’s most advanced airplane, the F-22 Raptor. It includes a half-scale model of the F-22 where young people can climb into the cockpit. KidVenture also features a scenic overlook from the Tower of Flight — a stunning observation deck for viewing activities on the grounds. Young Eagles 30th anniversary: Located on the Four Corners crossroads at the center of the AirVenture grounds, kids and their parents can find out more about getting a free introductory flight in their home area. Warbirds area flight simulators: Young people are invited to take the controls of virtual warbirds in the Quonset hut located just east of Knapp Street in the Warbirds area. PHOTO BY CONNOR MADISON

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!

BEECHCRAFT BONANZA The Beech Bonanza, one of the most popular general aviation aircraft of all time, was introduced in 1947. The Bonanza, initially recognizable by its distinctive V-tail, has been produced continuously for 75 years, longer than any other aircraft type. More than 100 Bonanzas of all eras come to Oshkosh together every year as part of an AirVenture mass arrival, and we expect record numbers in 2022.

DYKE DELTA Designed by John Dyke, EAA Lifetime 3566, the Dyke Delta is named for its striking delta-wing configuration. The prototype JD-1, which first flew in 1962, had room for a single pilot and two passengers, while the JD-2 was a bit bigger and could carry three passengers. It’s estimated that about 50 were built.

EVERY YEAR, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh becomes home

to thousands of aircraft. Some of them are here to be displayed or perform in one of the air shows, while others form the centerpieces of thousands of campsites. In some cases, though, there’s another reason, one that’s cause for specific celebration — the anniversary of an aircraft type’s first flight or introduction. At the time of this writing, we know of several types that are here to celebrate this year. So, as you walk the convention grounds, when you see one of these airplanes, be sure to stop and wish it a happy birthday. In addition, the U.S. Air Force turns 75 this year, and the world of ultralights turns 40, so take some time to help them celebrate as well.

This design led to the VariEze and Long-EZ, which went on to define the category of composite homebuilts.

CGS HAWK The award-winning CGS Hawk family was introduced in 1982 and includes both single-seat ultralights and two-seat light-sport aircraft. Hawks are equipped with three-axis controls and constructed from aluminum tubing and Dacron envelopes or conventional aircraft fabric.

NEW EAA MUSEUM EXHIBIT HONORS MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT WITH DISPLAY OF HIS CORSAIR A NEW EXHIBIT that opened April 23 in the EAA Aviation Museum’s

Eagle Hangar honors the late Thomas Hudner, a Korean War naval aviator, with a Corsair aircraft that replaced the one Hudner used in his heroic actions that earned him the Medal of Honor. The airplane has been in the EAA collection for 40 years and was fully restored in 1994 to represent one flown by World War II ace Kenneth Walsh. Recent research into the aircraft logbooks, however, showed the Corsair was a replacement for the Corsair that Hudner crash-landed in Korea in 1950 in an attempt to save fellow pilot Jesse Brown, the U.S. Navy’s first Black naval aviator. Hudner logged many hours and multiple carrier landings in the EAA aircraft, which after its Navy service was owned by several individuals before it was donated to EAA in 1982. “When we discovered that our Corsair had a direct connection to a Medal of Honor recipient, it was an easy decision to restore the airplane to its Korean War markings to honor him,” said Ron Connolly, EAA Aviation Museum director. “This new exhibit also honors Jesse Brown as a naval aviator and the bond he forged with his squadron mates during that time.” Members of the Hudner and Brown families were at the museum as part of the formal dedication of the display, including Thomas Hudner III, son of Thomas Hudner, and Jamal Knight, grandson of Jesse Brown. They also lent personal memorabilia that adds to the authenticity of the exhibit.

The Korean War incident that memorialized Hudner and Brown is the subject of a book and a soon-to-be-released major motion picture, both titled Devotion. The film stars Screen Actors Guild award winner Glen Powell, as well as Jonathan Majors, Serinda Swan, and Joe Jonas. The movie is scheduled to be released later this year, and EAA has been in regular contact with the production team in an advisory role. Watch for special programming to learn more about the upcoming film this week at the Theater in the Woods and the Fly-In Theater. The gull-winged Chance-Vought F4U-4 Corsair was one of the finest fighter-bomber aircraft produced during World War II. It was a formidable weapon from the closing months of WWII through the Korean War. In Korea, the Corsair was outclassed as a fighter (though it shot down at least one Chinese MiG-15 jet fighter), and it was used mostly as a ground-attack fighter/bomber. Its speed and ruggedness, and its huge bomb load capacity (rivaled only by late-model P-47s), made it very effective in the ground-attack role. Corsairs were flown by the U.S. Navy and Marines, the British Royal Navy’s Fleet Air Arm, the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and the French Aéronavale.

AIRVENTURE 2022 CELEBRATING 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF ULTRALIGHT PART 103

Development of innovative designs, materials, and construction technologies within the last 40 years has allowed more and more people to take part in ultralight flying. Emerging technologies, such as eVTOL aircraft, may also benefit from Part 103, as many may fall under the various regulations required of an ultralight, such as gross weight and cruise speed.

THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY of the ultralight vehicle and Part 103 will be celebrated this week at EAA

AirVenture Oshkosh 2022. Federal Aviation Regulation Part 103, which put regulations on ultralight vehicles effective October 4, 1982, marked the beginning of ultralights as we know them today. These regulations include operating rules, the definition of what qualifies as an ultralight, and more. Ultralights are known for their light weight and affordability, as well as being a fun way to fly. Some of the iconic ultralight vehicles that are celebrating their 40th anniversaries this year at AirVenture include the CGS Hawk, Fisher FP101, Phantom, Hiperlight, and B1-RD. EAA founder Paul Poberezny once said, “Freedom is what EAA is all about … Freedom to create and build … to dream … to fly.” Part 103 created a sense of freedom to fly for those who always wanted to but could not afford to. Not very often do people who love aviation celebrate federal aviation regulations, but this one allowed for many ultralight pilots to enjoy recreational flying without some of the restrictions and certification that comes with other forms of aviation.

NTSB TO SHARE LESSONS LEARNED FROM AVIATION INVESTIGATIONS AT AIRVENTURE PRESENTATIONS NATIONAL TRANSPORTATION SAFETY Board investiga-

tors and leaders — including Member Michael Graham — will attend EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2022 to meet the public and provide a series of safety presentations. “We look for every opportunity to advocate for aviation safety, and this event, the nation’s largest gathering of aviation enthusiasts, is a fantastic opportunity to share our safety recommendations,” said NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy. “We need all parts of the aviation industry engaged to make our skies safer.” While on-site, NTSB air safety investigators will deliver the agency’s “Fly Like a Pro” safety presentation series on Friday, July 29. Organized around the theme of pilot professionalism, the series will help attendees implement a safety-first culture, which includes a commitment to continuous improvement in flying proficiency. Sean Elliott, EAA’s vice president of advocacy and safety, will be moderating the “Fly Like a Pro” presentation, while EAA board members Charlie Precourt and Michael Goulian will also be part of the panel. Presentations are based on lessons learned from recent NTSB accident investigations and include a range of topics, including in-flight loss of control,

aviation weather, flight instruction, managing aeromedical risks, air traffic control communications, and airplane occupant protection systems. In addition, on Thursday, July 28, NTSB chief data scientist Dr. Loren Groff will be demonstrating how to get the most out of the agency’s aviation accident database, CAROL. He will also be soliciting feedback from current users of the database as part of the NTSB’s commitment to continuously improving the system’s functionality. The investigators presenting will also be staffing the NTSB exhibit booth in the International Federal Pavilion, located in Exhibit Hangar D, to meet the public and answer questions about investigations and processes, the agency’s mission, and careers at NTSB. The NTSB began its participation at AirVenture in 1995 and has had a presence there most years since then, but this is the first time the NTSB has returned to AirVenture since the COVID-19 pandemic began. NTSB resources regarding AirVenture, including a safety alert for pilots flying in to the event, a map showing the location of the NTSB exhibit, and the complete schedule of NTSB presentations are available at NTSB.gov.

EAA Aviation Museum Highlights D1931 Pitcairn PCA-2 Autogiro Miss Champion, NC11609 YOUR VISIT TO Oshkosh for EAA AirVenture 2022 isn’t

complete without a trip to the EAA Aviation Museum. Here’s one example of the approximately 200 aircraft on display in this world-class facility. In 1923, test pilot Lt. Gomez Spencer flew inventor Juan de la Cierva’s Autogiro in Madrid, Spain, marking the first controlled flight of a rotary-wing aircraft. The Autogiro, the direct predecessor of the helicopter, used large unpowered rotor blades to provide lift through autorotation. The Autogiro could keep flying because it was pulled through the air by an enginedriven propeller, much like a conventional airplane. The spinning rotor blades, acting like the wings of an airplane, permitted very slow flight and nearly vertical landings. In 1929, aircraft designer Harold F. Pitcairn purchased the U.S. rights to Cierva’s invention and started building his own Autogiros in Pennsylvania. One of his first successful designs was the PCA-2 Autogiro. Only two PCA-2 Autogiros exist today — one on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan, and Steve Pitcairn’s Miss Champion. Miss Champion came off the line at the Pitcairn Aircraft Co. in June 1931.

Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, where he used the Autogiro to help archeologists explore Mayan ruins. The Autogiro’s slow flight and spectacular landing characteristics allowed the archeologists to make many discoveries they might never have found on the ground. After returning to the United States, the Champion Spark Plug Co. retired Miss Champion at the end of 1932. Soon after, it was placed on exhibit at Chicago’s

CHAMPION SPARK PLUG CO. DECIDED TO BUY A PCA-2 AND USE IT AS A FLYING BILLBOARD TO ADVERTISE ITS SPARK PLUGS. THE AIRCRAFT IMMEDIATELY BECAME KNOWN AS MISS CHAMPION AND WAS PUT TO USE ADVERTISING CHAMPION SPARK PLUGS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.

Autogiros attracted attention wherever they flew, so the Champion Spark Plug Co. decided to buy a PCA-2 and use it as a flying billboard to advertise its spark plugs. The aircraft immediately became known as Miss Champion and was put to use advertising Champion spark plugs all over the country. Capt. Lewis Yancey flew Miss Champion more than 6,500 miles, visiting 21 states and 38 cities with the 1931 Ford National Air Tour. Everywhere the Autogiro flew, it was the main attraction. Yancey flew to

Museum of Science and Industry. After World War II, it was sold to various people until ending up in Oshkosh. In September 2005, Miss Champion joined the permanent collection of the EAA Aviation Museum, where it’s now on public display as a prized example of early rotary-winged flight. Don’t miss your chance to see this 1931 Pitcairn PCA-2 Autogiro and hundreds of other aircraft in the EAA Aviation Museum.

NASA is collaborating with industry partners to demonstrate these technologies by using existing aircraft that will be modified and flown with EAP systems and components. EPFD also will assist industry in addressing key technical barriers and risks associated with integrating EAP systems into airliners, as well as help identify and evaluate new standards for future EAP aircraft.

EAP technologies offer innovative solutions to making flight more sustainable — including lighter and more efficient motors, electronics, and materials that can help reduce emission levels and improve fuel efficiency. The EPFD project will test these technologies for future use in smaller, regional aircraft with fewer than 100 passengers, as well as single-aisle commercial

airliners designed for around 180 passengers and operating longer-distance flights. Through the EPFD project, NASA seeks to introduce EAP systems to the U.S. commercial fleet by conducting at least two flight demonstrations within the next five years and help transition these technologies into commercial products within the 2030 to 2035 time frame.

GETTING TO KNOW BOEING’S ECODEMONSTRATOR JEN WOLLMANN

IF YOU’RE NOT familiar with Boeing’s ecoDemonstrator, chances are you will be by the

end of AirVenture. Boeing has brought to Oshkosh the 777-200ER (extended range) it’s using as the 2022 Boeing ecoDemonstrator test platform, and it’s making it available for public tours — a rare opportunity for a behind-the-scenes look at how new aerospace technologies are tested. The program first took flight 10 years ago, taking promising technologies out of the lab and testing them rigorously in an operational environment. In that time Boeing has partnered with customers, suppliers, government agencies, academia, and other stakeholders to test 230 technologies across nine different platforms, with about a third of those being implemented on aircraft today.

The Boeing 2022 ecoDemonstrator will test 30 technologies to enhance safety and sustainability. Shown here, an image of the airplane — a Boeing-owned 777-200ER (Extended Range).

• A continued comprehensive study of the impact of sustainable aviation fuel toward the reduction of emissions, a collaboration with NASA, supporting Boeing’s commitment that all commercial airplanes it delivers will be certified to fly using 100-percent sustainable aviation fuel by 2030. • SMART vortex generators, small vertical vanes on the wing that improve aerodynamic efficiency during takeoff and landing. Shape memory alloys developed with NASA enable the vortex generators to retract into the wing during cruise, improving fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. • A collaboration with Diehl Aviation to test a water conservation system that uses wastewater from hand-washing to flush the lavatories, reducing weight and fuel use. • UV disinfection technology in partnership with Collins Aerospace and Jamco. • Boeing is testing several technologies aimed at improving operational efficiency, including a capability that can improve situational awareness for pilots during airplane taxiing. This includes combining airport data sources with Jeppesen airport maps to enable single-engine taxi operations to reduce fuel consumption. • A partnership with Universal Avionics to test a next-generation head-worn head-up display and enhanced vision system camera.

VISITORS WHO TAKE THE TOUR WILL BE ABLE TO SEE AND LEARN MORE ABOUT SOME OF THE TECHNOLOGIES BEING TESTED WITH PARTNERS THIS YEAR.

DAVE JACKSON’S VOLUNTEER PROJECT Chock it up to good will BY ERIN HENZE

AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF

AS YOU WANDER through the thousands of aircraft parked

throughout the AirVenture grounds, you might not be focused on the wooden chocks keeping the aircraft in place. However, I’d recommend you pay a little closer attention, as some of these chocks have been specially designed. Tucked away in a workshop is volunteer Dave Jackson, EAA Lifetime 272361. Dave has been making custom chocks for almost 30 years, starting partly in thanks to his son’s job. “One summer he worked for Basler,” Dave explained. “Every year, they lose so many chocks, and they have to make a whole new bunch of chocks. … They get to make their own stencil for each year. The ones [Dave’s son] made said ’93 on them.”

After getting a hold of some of these chocks, Dave decided he needed to make some, too. “I used to make the FBO-style chocks, you know, the triangular ones,” he said. “Then, we’re working more and more with warbirds, and I went to the military style.” Dave makes about 200 of these chocks a year, each designed with a variety of items like names, years, and fun decals. Much to Dave’s chagrin, many pilots like to take these chocks as souvenirs, meaning his 200 a year barely covers the ones that go missing. “We average about 175 lost every year,” Dave said. “That’s a lot of chocks. Last year was a good year; I think we only lost 135.” However, there’s one type of chock that Dave is happy to see taken — the chocks he creates to specifically honor one who has gone west. “Well, the remembering program I started about five years ago … that’s probably the most important part of me making chocks,” he said. These chocks are fitted with the names of people gone west, as well as their favorite airplane. “Yeah, some of the chocks disappear, but I want to see them under the airplanes so that people say, ‘Oh yeah, I knew that guy,’ or, if a family member takes one, I don’t have a problem with that, because that’s also what they’re there for.”

DAVE MAKES ABOUT 200 OF THESE CHOCKS A YEAR, EACH DESIGNED WITH A VARIETY OF ITEMS LIKE NAMES, YEARS, AND FUN DECALS. MUCH TO DAVE’S CHAGRIN, MANY PILOTS LIKE TO TAKE THESE CHOCKS AS SOUVENIRS, MEANING HIS 200 A YEAR BARELY COVERS THE ONES THAT GO MISSING.
