GOODYEAR BLIMP RETURNS FOR APPEARANCE AT EAA AIRVENTURE OSHKOSH 2021 THE GOODYEAR TIRE & Rubber Co.’s newest
airship, Wingfoot Three, will continue a long tradition of Oshkosh Goodyear appearances with a visit to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021, scheduled for July 26-August 1 at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh. Goodyear’s Wingfoot Three is scheduled to arrive in Oshkosh on Monday, July 26, and will be on display and be flying at various times during the event until Saturday, July 31. At EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021, Wingfoot Three pilots will also participate at a variety of events, as AirVenture is one of the

few air shows on the Goodyear blimp schedule this year. “Through the years, there’s a special excitement when attendees arrive at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh and one of the first sights they see is the iconic Goodyear blimp parked on the grounds or in the air overhead,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of programs, chapters, education, and museum, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. “Goodyear has been an important AirVenture exhibitor for many years, and it’s always great to see that Oshkosh has made the ‘blimp-worthy’ list of America’s major events.”
Wingfoot Three is the newest addition to the Goodyear blimp fleet, as it was first flown in June 2018. It marked the completion of the full fleet to the New Technology (NT) platform. The blimp was manufactured by Germany’s ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik and assembled by a team of Zeppelin and Goodyear engineers. It represented the first major structural change of a Goodyear blimp in nearly 70 years. The Wingfoot Three appearance continues a 50-year tradition of Goodyear airship appearances at EAA’s fly-in convention. The first Goodyear blimp appearance at the EAA fly-in was in 1971, when the
airship America came to Oshkosh. Several generations of Goodyear blimps have flown to and over EAA fly-ins since then. Goodyear Aviation will also continue its participation as an EAA AirVenture exhibitor in 2021 in the Main Aircraft Display area, Exhibit 489. Goodyear’s aerial coverage of marquee events in 2021 has already included the numerous NASCAR, PGA, and NBA events. The Goodyear blimp has been honored with induction as an honorary member of the College Football Hall of Fame, the first nonplayer or coach to be inducted. OSHKOSH MOMENTS
Meet the Winners of the Pilot Your Own Adventure Writing Contest WHEN THE CALL for stories about pilots’ favor-
ite aviation adventures went out in April 2021, we didn’t expect to get so many entries. Out of the 267 stories sent in, five winners were chosen. Their stories cover a variety of adventures all around the world, but all captured The Spirit of Aviation. Fifth prize winner is Erica Zangwill, EAA 1394520, of North Carolina. Erica’s story takes readers with her and her husband, Brandon, as they fly around the country — literally! “I feel excited and very, very lucky to have this opportunity,” Erica said. “I’m also excited to attend my
very first AirVenture — we’ve literally been counting the days!” Fourth prize winner is Tucker Axum of California with a story of friendship. Tucker began flying in 1999, and he spends his days working as both as a special agent for the U.S. government and as an author. With a life filled with adventure, Tucker hopes to inspire people with his story. “I wrote [my] story to inspire people to be adventurous and to show the importance of friendship,” Tucker said. Third prize winner is Michael Gerhardt, EAA 498733, of Alabama for
his story about a father-son adventure. Originally from South Africa, Michael has been flying since 1978, looking for adrenaline rushes the entire time. His favorite part of flying adventures like this one is the natural beauty he gets to see. “This country is gorgeous,” Michael said. “There’s aspects of it that one … tends to forget in the concrete jungles in our cities.” Second prize winner is Sheera Kaizerman of Massachusetts and her whirlwind of a story. Earning her pilot certificate not long after the story took
place, Sheera loved being able to retell her exciting journey. “I always meant to write more about it and never did, so this was a really great outlet,” Sheera said. First prize winner is Peter Shannon, EAA 1248421, of California for his step into the past. Peter has been flying since 1994, but this journey taught him something new about flying. “It was kind of like opening a new window with flying,” Peter said. “There’s so many windows into the history of this country and the ways to see it, and it’s really unique when you’re in a GA aircraft.”

FARMER ERIK EDGREN is flying into EAA
AirVenture Oshkosh in his modified 1939 Taylorcraft called T-Clips. It was “clipped” for aerobatics in 1997 by Steve Givens using a mix of both the Swick and legendary Duane Cole plans. Erik has further modified T-Clips with inverted fuel and oil and air show smoke systems, making it an optimal and unique up close and personal, crowd-pleasing air show machine. Erik lives and works on the family farm in Iowa he grew up on, taking over for his father in 1997. However, his aviation career began far before that. Starting at 6 years old, Erik would sit on his father’s lap and help fly the airplane. At 8 years, he was practically ready to solo,
using a tailor-made seat and control extensions. However, his life was changed when he went to EAA Oshkosh 1977 at 8 years old, where he saw numerous aerobatic performances. “I saw Duane Cole flying his clipwinged Taylorcraft,” Erik said. “It was at that point that … the dream was solidified that I was going to be an air show pilot someday, and that someday I was going to fly the air show [at AirVenture].”
“IT WAS AT THAT POINT THAT THE DREAM WAS SOLIDIFIED THAT I WAS GOING TO BE AN AIR SHOW PILOT.”
After a lifetime of flying, Erik is excited to achieve his lifelong dream of performing at EAA AirVenture 2021. “It doesn’t even seem real, after wanting it for all these years, that it’s finally in my grasp,” Erik explained.
“It’s the strangest combination of ove r- t h e - t o p exc i t e m e n t a n d surrealism.” Check Erik’s performance out this week or stop by his website at Erik Edgren Airshows.com to learn more.
EAA would like to thank its partners for their support in making your convention special H

Flight Training Bills Introduced to Congress CONTINUING THE ADVOCACY of EAA and countless other general

aviation associations large and small, twin bills have been introduced in Congress this week to reverse the policy set forth by the FAA in their July 12 policy memo on flight training in experimental, limited, and primary category aircraft. In the Senate, S.2458 has been introduced by Sens. James Inhofe (R-Oklahoma), John Boozman (R-Arkansas), and Angus King (I-Maine). In the House, Rep. Sam Graves (R-Missouri) is sponsoring H.R.4645. The bills prohibit the FAA from defining flight training in these aircraft as “carrying persons or property for compensation or hire.” The FAA’s definition of instruction in limited category aircraft as carriage of persons for compensation in several recent court cases led to all compensated training in limited, experimental, and primary category aircraft as being deemed contrary to the regulations without authorization from the FAA. The FAA quickly implemented letters of deviation authority (LODAs) and exemption as a temporary fix to allow training to continue, but this still adds a bureaucratic step to what should be a simple transaction between instructor and student. While the FAA immediately announced work on a more permanent solution via rulemaking, they acknowledged that this fix is likely to be years away. EAA, AOPA, and nine other associations signed letters to Sen. Inhofe and Rep. Graves advocating legislative action on the matter, believi n g t h e i s s u e t o b e t o o u rg e n t t o l e ave t o t h e regulatory process.

“By inserting needless paperwork into the flight training process, the FAA is acting contrary to their congressional mandate to ensure the safety of the airspace,” said Sean Elliott, EAA vice president of advocacy and safety. “congressional action is the most expedient way to fix the issue, and we are working to support the swift passage of this measure.” EAA will have further information in the next few days on how members can support the legislation. The Advocacy booth will be open during AirVenture from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. MondaySaturday, and 9-11 a.m. on Sunday, and there will be a petition for members to sign and a system for contacting Congress.

AIRVENTURE TODAY NEWS AND INFO
EAA GRANTED EXEMPTION FOR FLIGHT TRAINING IN LIMITED CATEGORY AIRCRAFT EAA HAS BEEN granted a sweeping exemption for flight
NOW HIRING » Access to United’s Aviate Program » Highest-Valued Pay & Benefits in the Industry » $5,000 No-Contract First Officer Bonus
training in limited category aircraft that any owner or operator can use. This exemption allows owners of limited category warbirds and their associated pilots and partners to continue training in their own aircraft following the disruptive fallout of the FAA interpretation and associated court ruling on operating certain aircraft for “compensation or hire” earlier this year. The exemption is similar to the letter of deviation authority (LODA) being used as a temporary regulatory fix for experimental aircraft. It allows for compensated flight training and checking for owners of limited category aircraft and their delegates (i.e., other pilots who fly and require proficiency in the aircraft), as long as the use of the aircraft itself is not compensated. For private owners, including ownership groups, this returns the operating rules for these aircraft to essentially what they were before the ruling, provided that owners file a “notice of intent” to join the exemption on the federal docket. In the aftermath of the FAA’s startling policy statement of July 12, which effectively halted all compensated flight training in experimental, limited, and primary category aircraft without a LODA or exemption, EAA quickly drafted and filed a prototype exemption request for limited category aircraft. While experimental aircraft owners were able to immediately file for LODAs, those with limited category aircraft were not. The limited rule, used to grant airworthiness to surplus military aircraft in the aftermath of World

War II, does not contain a LODA provision, so the exemption route was the only option. EAA applied for the exemption using its P-51D Mustang Paul I and B-25H Mitchell Berlin Express as test cases, building the case that training in these aircraft is in the public interest and carries a safety benefit. Any member of the community, EAA member or otherwise, can use EAA’s exemption by filing a “notice of intent” to the exemption’s docket. Per the text of the exemption, the notice must include: a. Aircraft registration number(s), b. Aircraft serial number(s), c. Aircraft make(s)/model(s), d. Owner (or responsible person if the owner is a com-
pany or association) requesting this relief, and
e. Contact information (address, email, and telephone)
for the owner or responsible person.
Once the notice is filed, the exemption instantaneously applies to the aircraft and any crew member receiving instruction within the parameters of the exemption. This is in many ways more convenient than the LODA process, which currently requires an individual LODA be granted to each operator. The exemption is valid until July 31, 2025. “This in no way is an acceptable long-term fix for the serious safety problem that FAA and the courts have created, but the FAA flight standards team worked hard to create a solution for limited category aircraft through this exemption,” said Sean Elliott, EAA vice president of advocacy and safety. “As an advocacy organization that both routinely operates limited category aircraft and maintains strong relationships with key FAA personnel, we were able to quickly apply for relief that covers the entire community.” This is EAA’s latest involvement in a legal and regulatory saga that has gone on for the past year and a half. We continue to advocate a full repeal of any requirement for a LODA or exemption to train in private aircraft, and are actively working on a legislative fix alongside many other general aviation groups.

JIM AND MARY JEANNE TROSKY HAVE VOLUNTEERED AT EAA AIRVENTURE MEDICAL SERVICES FOR A COMBINED 77 YEARS, AND MARY JEANNE HAS BEEN THE CHAIR FOR 17 YEARS. IF PEOPLE STOP BY SUFFERING FROM THE HEAT, THEY’LL GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO DRINK AND HAVE THEM LIE DOWN IN THIS AIR-CONDITIONED ROOM UNTIL THEY COOL OFF.
If people are out on the grounds when they start to feel overheated, they should sit down in the shade and have a drink until they start to feel better, Trosky said. They can also come into their main facility, which is air conditioned and located northeast of the FAA Control Tower. That building includes a room with beds and cots where people can lie down and rest. Medical Services, more commonly known as First Aid, is manned by currently licensed doctors and registered nurses, and has three locations on the AirVenture grounds: northeast of the FAA Control Tower, in Camp Scholler, and in Ultralights, the latter of which handles things like giving out bandages and sunscreen. The majority of people come into their facilities for things like sunburn, blisters, cuts and bruises, allergies or respiratory problems, rashes, or because they forgot to pack their medications, Trosky said. In the latter instance, one of their doctors will contact the patient’s doctor and order medications, which then will be delivered to the convention grounds. They also have dentists, ophthalmologists, and other specialists on call. “We also wash out a lot of peoples’ eyes who put sunscreen on their
foreheads and then start sweating,” Trosky said. While they will not be providing COVID vaccinations, they ask people who have COVID-19 symptoms to come to their facilities, Trosky said. “If someone has symptoms, we will give them a mask, take them to the tent in back of the building, and place a call to another agency that will pick them up and screen them,” she said. Each shift, about three doctors and four or five registered nurses are on hand at the Tower location. They are usually open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., but they will often stay open an hour or so later when there are big events scheduled on the grounds, Trosky said. Many of their medical volunteers are older and have been giving of their medical expertise for decades, often for multiple days each convention. But this year they also have some new volunteers starting, she said. Trosky said she began volunteering at First Aid 39 years ago when she and her husband, Jim, then an airline pilot, came to the fly-in convention. “After a while I said I have to do something else besides look at airplanes,” she said. The following year, Jim joined her in volunteering, and he has been helping out with Medical Services logistics for 38 years.

AIRVENTURE TODAY AROUND THE GROUNDS
Humanitarian Aircraft at Oshkosh NUMEROUS HUMANITARIAN ORGANIZATIONS
around the world are working hard every day to deliver aid to those in need. Many of the missions served by these organizations would not be possible without the use of air transportation. These aircraft and the pilots who fly them serve a large number of people, many of whom live in remote areas of the world without access to daily needs such as clean water, food, shelter, and health care. A few of these dedicated organizations and their lifesaving aircraft will be present throughout the week of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021. Learn about these organizations and where you can find them.

physical aid to those in need around the world. Since 1975, Samaritan’s Purse has been using aircraft to transport doctors and relief workers, along with food, medicine, shelter materials, blankets, and other items. Samaritan’s Purse operates with a fleet of 19 aircraft, including two helicopters. One of those 19 aircraft is a DC-8, which joined the fleet in 2015. The DC-8 is able to carry up to 84,000 pounds of cargo and 32 passengers, making it instrumental to the operations the organization carries out. As of April 2016, the DC-8 has carried more than 4.5 million pounds of cargo on 153 missions around the world. In 2020, the DC-8 carried more than 250 tons of cargo on 14 relief missions. Samaritan’s Purse and the DC-8 will be present on Boeing Plaza throughout the week of AirVenture.

ASL Camguard™ is an advanced oil supplement, F.A.A. accepted for use in most piston aircraft engines. Camguard is formulated to safeguard the investment in your aircraft engine by addressing the complex and interrelated problems of corrosion, carbon deposits and mechanical wear. Camguard combats corrosion by leaving a continuous film of inhibitor on metal surfaces. Camguard halts deposit formation, leaving your engine clean and parts free to move. So whether you fly a little or a lot, Camguard always pays dividends with decreased aircraft engine maintenance costs. Just adding 5% of ASL Camguard to your oil at every oil change provides peace of mind that comes with knowing your investment is protected.

ONE OF THE central themes of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021 is a commemoration of
the 75th (plus one) anniversary of the end of World War II. This is a time for us to pause and reflect on the valor and the sacrifice of those veterans who saved the free world more than three-quarters of a century ago. Every year, scores of beautifully restored warbirds come to Oshkosh. Each day, in no particular order, we’ll highlight some of the aircraft you might see around the convention grounds this year.
B-29 SUPERFORTRESS MANUFACTURER: BOEING CATEGORY: BOMBER YEAR INTRODUCED: 1944 Designed to supersede the B-17, Boeing’s B-29 represented the height of strategic bombing technology of the day. It was fast and boasted impressive range and endurance at high altitudes, all while carrying thousands of pounds of ordnance. B-29s arrived late in the war, entering service in May 1944 and used exclusively in the Pacific theater. B-29s can be considered the airplanes that ended the war, as first Enola Gay and then Bockscar dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, leading directly to the Japanese surrender. Nearly 4,000 were built, but only two are in flyable condition today.
DH.82 TIGER MOTH MANUFACTURER: DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO. CATEGORY: TRAINER YEAR INTRODUCED: 1932 Designer Geoffrey de Havilland built his first airplane in 1909 and started his professional aviation career the following year. A decade later, he founded his own company that produced a series of successful designs. The DH.82 Tiger Moth was developed from the popular DH.60 series and first flew in October 1931. The DH.82 was built in huge numbers from 1931 to 1944 and served as the primary trainer for the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force. The type was built under license by multiple manufacturers. The Canadian variant, distinguished by its enclosed canopy, was the backbone of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, an extraordinary effort that produced more than 130,000 trained Allied air crew in Canada alone. AIRVENTURE TODAY
PILOT / PAGE 1 Brady flew from Viburnum, Missouri, to Oshkosh, making it the longest trip he’s flown to date. “It took me six hours to fly here. I stopped three times, and then in Portage [Wisconsin] I spent the night at their FBO, before getting here on July 22 at 1:20,” Brady said. For a low-time pilot, flying into the world’s busiest airport requires a lot of planning and focus. “It was a great flight, a little nervewracking,” Brady said. “I spent a lot of time looking through the NOTAM, had all my frequencies written down. I spent a lot, a lot of time getting prepared because whenever I got here, I wanted everything to be second nature, muscle memory. I didn’t want to be worrying about anything, or stressing about anything. I thought the more prepared I am, the less eventful, and uneventful is always better when you’re flying.”
Brady’s inspiration to become a pilot started with his dad. “He flew helicopters a couple of years in the military, then he got back in aviation in 2010 and encouraged all of us to get into aviation, too, and our whole family kind of fell in love with it,” Brady said. “I learned to fly in his Cessna 150, and right before I started getting into my flight training, I decided that I wanted to go a different route. I wanted to fly something older. I’ve always loved old cars, old airplanes, and so we thought what … fit my personality better than a ’46 Aeronca Champ.” Brady said what helped him the most in his journey to getting his certificate was having someone keep him accountable. “My dad has just always been there to push me and encourage me,” Brady said. “He held me accountable, which is what I needed to keep that motivation.”

Volunteer Spotlight — Doug Greenfield DOUG GREENFIELD, EAA 377864, has been attending EAA
AirVenture Oshkosh since the early 1990s and volunteering in numerous capacities, beginning a few years after his first visit. Doug initially volunteered on the flightline in the Ultralights area and was soon asked to be a co-chairman, a position he held for 15 years. With his sons Jacob and Adam helping out in the Ultralights area, Doug eventually decided to give up his co-chairmanship, which was subsequently given to his oldest son, Jacob. He then began working with EAA’s photography team to organize and coordinate air-to-air photo shoots with pilots and EAA photographers. At first, Doug was the only volunteer performing these duties. His daughter, Amanda, soon joined him, because there was simply too much to get done and
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Volunteers make EAA AirVenture Oshkosh — and just about everything else EAA does — possible. This space is dedicated to thanking and shining the spotlight on volunteers from the community. Sadly, it cannot capture all of the thousands of volunteers who give so much to the community every year. So, next time you see a volunteer at AirVenture or elsewhere, however they are pitching in to make EAA better, be sure to thank them for it. It’s the least we can do. organized. Even with Amanda on the team, Doug has some incredibly long days during AirVenture. “We start at 4:30 in the morning and go all day long until [it] shuts down at 8:00 at night,” Doug said. “We’re running everywhere. I need extra bodies sometimes, so she’s been fantastic.” Like many EAA volunteers, Doug gives up nearly his entire week to help out, when he could be relaxing and simply enjoying the show. He donates his time because he wants to share his love for flying and aviation with anyone he can. “I’ve been around aviation since I was 3 years old,” he said. “I love flying. When you first go to Oshkosh, it’s overwhelming. You can’t imagine how big it is, how much passion there is about flying. It’s the sharing of that same passion with so many people [that I enjoy]. Everybody there gets stressed during the week, but everyone works hard. But volunteers are the friendliest people in the world. Over time, those people have become family.” In addition, Doug’s children have developed that same passion for AirVenture, something that’s made his volunteer service even more gratifying. “It’s truly a time where my kids and I have a connection with each other,” he said. “We take family vacations and do things like that together, but over the years it’s been what we’ve done at Oshkosh and the people we connect with that we value as much as anything.”

MUSEUM AIRCRAFT SPOTTERS GUIDE BY HAL BRYAN
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
EVERY YEAR, MORE than 10,000 aircraft fly to Wisconsin for AirVenture. Of those, nearly
3,000 are showplanes — vintage aircraft, warbirds, homebuilts, aerobatic airplanes, etc. — that are displayed around the grounds. But some visitors may notice other airplanes parked here and there that didn’t fly in at all, because they’re part of the EAA Aviation Museum collection. Because our museum exhibits rotate, many of these aircraft are only viewable by the public during AirVenture, spending the rest of the year in long-term storage on the convention grounds. Here’s a guide to some of these airplanes that you’ll see as you wander the neighborhoods of AirVenture.

1944 CULVER PQ-14B KADET
We hear all about drones these days, but they’re nothing new. The PQ-14B was an optionally piloted target drone that could be flown remotely from the ground or from another airplane, following as many as 5 miles behind. Our example was used in testing midair wingtip coupling, an alternative means of towing aircraft by joining them to the wingtips of a larger aircraft.
The nine-acre property that Paul and Audrey Poberezny once called home is now on display thanks to Aircraft Spruce & Specialty Co. and the Irwin family. Tours will be offered daily Monday, July 26, through Saturday, July 31, at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3p.m. Check-in and bus transportation will be located at Forums Stage 7, across from the EAA Blue Barn. Tickets for the tour are $5 each and can be purchased at the check-in location.

Designer Ray Stits built the SA-11A Playmate as a simple and inexpensive homebuilt in the late 1960s. The side-by-side two-seater was powered by a 125-hp Lycoming O-290, and featured quick-folding wings that made the airplane fit in a standard-size garage. Ray donated the prototype to EAA in 1969.

unfortunately unavailable for rides during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021, attendees will still have the opportunity to purchase a flight on arguably the most famous bomber of World War II. Yankee Air Museum, based at Willow Run Airport in Michigan, is bringing its B-17G Yankee Lady to AirVenture this summer and will be selling rides and participating in the daily air shows throughout the week. Yankee Lady is a B-17G -110-VE, USAAF serial number 44-85829. Built by the Vega Division of Lockheed Aircraft Corp., which was licensed to produce B-17s during the war, Yankee Lady was delivered to the U.S. Army Air Forces on July 16, 1945, but was then sent to Dallas for modifications and placed in storage in September 1945 at South Plains Field in Texas. In 1946, it was transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard and redesignated a PB-1G. The guns and turrets were removed, and a radar dome was installed in place of the chin turret. The Coast Guard used the aircraft for air-sea rescue missions and iceberg patrol.
The aircraft was retired from Coast Guard service in 1958. In 1959, the aircraft was sold to Ace Smelting Inc. and then purchased by Aircraft Specialties Inc. in 1966. Aircraft Specialties used the aircraft as an air tanker, fighting forest fires and dropping pesticides. In 1969, it was flown to Hawaii for the filming of the movie Tora! Tora! Tora! In 1985, Globe Air (the successor company of Aircraft Specialties) auctioned off the aircraft, where it was purchased by Yankee Air Museum. It was flown to Michigan from Arizona in 1986 and was grounded for nine years. During this time, the aircraft was completely restored by a team of volunteers at Yankee Air Museum, with the goal of returning the B-17 to the air while also restoring it to the original design. After an extensive rebuild process that eventually returned the aircraft to its World War II configuration, it was painted in the markings of a B-17G assigned to the 8th Air Force, 381st Bomb Group, flying out of Ridgewell, England. Neither the name Yankee Lady nor the nose art replicate any known combat B-17s, rather they are meant to represent the era and the museum.
On July 13, 1995, the first post-restoration flight of Yankee Lady took place, and the aircraft has been flying ever since. Other than Yankee Lady, flight opportunities also available during AirVenture include EAA’s B-25 Berlin Express, the Ford Tri-Motor, and the Bell 47 helicopter.

KIDVENTURE CHANGES FOR 2021
Visit us at Hanger C, Booth 3087-3088
A few tweaks, but still going strong BY ERIN HENZE
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
DUE TO TRAVEL restrictions and COVID precautions,
KidVenture at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021 will look a little different than normal. To prepare for KidVenture, regular operations for Pioneer Airport halted on July 21 and will resume on August 4. During AirVenture, Pioneer Airport gets transformed into heaven-on-Earth for aviation-loving kids. With free admission to AirVenture for kids 18 and under, EAA has prepared a wide variety of activities and learning experiences for KidVenture. “It’s been a challenging year with the changes necessary to make everybody feel comfortable,” said Dan Majka, EAA Lifetime 90726 and the director of KidVenture, “but I think we’ve got it worked out, and I think it’s going to be a spectacular year.” To spread out attendees, 11 tents are being placed around the Pioneer Airport grounds, along with the permanent hangars residing there. Not only will this result in fewer people per building, but it will also provide more ventilation. The tents will contain a variety of activities, such as prop building and virtual flying. PHOTO BY CRYSTAL PEREZ
While a number of businesses that normally participate couldn’t come this year because of employee travel restrictions, many of them have committed to coming next year. In addition to this, a number of new businesses have come this year to fill in the open spaces at KidVenture, such as Siemens Corp. Siemens will have a wide variety of hands-on STEM activities, computer simulations, and programming. Back this year is the U.S. Air Force, bringing with them two F-16 simulators. Here, attendees will be able to use VR goggles to realistically fly these aircraft. “I’m telling you,” explained Dan, “it’s as close to flying as you can get; it’s spectacular.” Other highlights of this year’s KidVenture include a space flight hangar where attendees can build their own rockets, Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship winners helping train kids how to preflight an airplane, and, for those who complete all the A&P activities, an EAA tool set of their very own. Though this year’s KidVenture may look a little different, it will be as action-packed and exciting as ever, with something for people of all interests. “We’re not trying to make everybody a pilot; that’s not our goal,” Dan said. “Our goal is to make everybody an aviation enthusiast.”

AIRCRAFT ANNIVERSARIES BY HAL BRYAN

EVERY YEAR, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh
becomes home to thousands of aircraft. Some of them are here to be displayed or perform in one of the air shows, while others form the centerpieces of thousands of campsites. In some cases, though, there’s another reason, one that’s cause for specific celebration — the anniversary of an aircraft type’s first flight or introduction. At the time of this writing, we know of several types that are here to celebrate this year, including some holdovers from last year — the AirVenture that wasn’t. So, as you walk the convention grounds, when you see one of these airplanes, be sure to stop and wish it a happy

EAA Aviation Museum Highlights 1931 Pitcairn PCA-2 Autogiro Miss Champion, NC11609 YOUR VISIT TO Oshkosh for EAA AirVenture
2021 isn’t complete without a trip to the EAA Aviation Museum. Here’s one example of the approximately 200 aircraft on display in this world-class facility. In 1923, test pilot Lt. Gomez Spencer flew inventor Juan de la Cierva’s Autogiro in Madrid, Spain, marking the first controlled flight of a rotary-wing aircraft. The Autogiro, the direct predecessor of the helicopter, used large unpowered rotor blades to provide lift through autorotation. The Autogiro could keep flying because it was pulled through the air by an enginedriven propeller, much like a conventional airplane. The spinning rotor blades, acting like the wings of an airplane, permitted very slow flight and nearly vertical landings.
In 1929, aircraft designer Harold F. Pitcairn purchased the U.S. rights to Cierva’s invention and started building his own Autogiros in Pennsylvania. One of his first successful designs was the PCA-2 Autogiro. Only two PCA-2 Autogiros exist today – one on display a t t h e He n r y Fo rd Mu s e u m i n Dearborn, Michigan, and Steve Pitcairn’s Miss Champion. Miss Champion came off the line at the Pitcairn Aircraft Co. in June 1931. Autogiros attracted attention wherever they flew, so the Champion Spark Plug Co. decided to buy a PCA-2 and use it as a flying billboard to advertise their sparkplugs. The aircraft immediately became known as Miss Champion and was put to use advertising Champion spark plugs all over the country.
Capt. Lewis Yancey flew Miss Champion more than 6,500 miles, visiting 21 states and 38 cities with the 1931 Ford National Air Tour. Everywhere the Autogiro flew, it was the main attraction. Yancey flew to Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, where he used the Autogiro to help archeologists explore Mayan ruins. The Autogiro’s slow flight and spectacular landing characteristics allowed the archeologists to make many discoveries they might never have found on the ground. After returning to the U.S., the Champion Spark Plug Co. retired Miss Champion at the end of 1932. Soon after, it was placed on exhibit at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. After World War II, it was sold to various people until ending up in Oshkosh. In September 2005, Miss Champion joined the permanent collection
of the EAA Aviation Museum, where it’s now on public display as a prized example of early rotary-winged flight. Don’t miss your chance to see this 1931 Pitcairn PCA-2 Autogiro and hundreds of other aircraft in the EAA Aviation Museum.

AIRVENTURE TODAY
OSHKOSH MOMENTS
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, DEBBIE AND JACK!
BY CHRISTINA BASKEN
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
JACK KLEIN, EAA 518733, and Debbie Klein, EAA 1058911, celebrated their wedding by coming to AirVenture for their honeymoon, 40 years ago on this very day. “We were here for almost the whole week and camped in Scholler with 300,000 other friends!” Debbie said and laughed.
Jack and Debbie have been coming to AirVenture for as long as they can remember, and for them, it only made sense to come back to the place they’ve loved for so long for their honeymoon. While they didn’t meet in Oshkosh, like true aviation enthusiasts they met at an airport. “We met at the FBO my dad owned, and he was working on a sailplane,” Debbie explained. Jack and Debbie have been EAA members for many years, and they’ve been coming to AirVenture consistently for 25 of those. “Dan started volunteering seven years ago, and I started volunteering 10

years ago,” Debbie said. “I started out on the flightline, and I was there for three to four years, and I decided I kind of wanted to volunteer down here [Vintage area] where my plane was,” Debbie said. “He’s done crossing guard. We’ve both done parking aircraft, directing traffic.”
“To make an organization like this work, you got to volunteer, and then when you do volunteer you meet all these people, and they’re all like-minded with aviation,” Jack said. “This is our family reunion. Every year this is our family reunion, and we look forward to it so much,” Debbie added. Debbie and Jack aren’t the only Kleins who love AirVenture. Their daughter, Kristina, EAA 1124504, and son, Dan, EAA 1358368, have also been coming to and volunteering at AirVenture for several years! It’s true what they say; EAA is all about family and community, and we’re happy to have the Kleins be part of it.
