AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
THE 2021 EAA Volunteers of the Year have
been announced, and this year’s winners represent many of the values that EAA holds important. This year, there are seven Volunteer of the Year recipients: Tim and Sherry Niederkorn, Pam Ratliff, John Mellberg, Bill Zierdt, John Wiegand, and Mert Taylor. The Volunteer of the Year recipients were honored at a ceremony on Sunday afternoon at Volunteer Park. Tim, EAA Lifetime 1249996, and Sherry, EAA 1277308, have been volunteering for many years with EAA, primarily with EAA Chapter 5 in Middlefield, Ohio, as well as at EAA Chapter 228 in Mesa, Arizona, and at AirVenture. From event organizing to Young Eagles to scholarships, Tim and Sherry volunteer in a number of capacities. PHOTO BY ANDREW ZABACK

HONORING / PAGE 1 “We were surprised [to be named Volunteers of the Year],” Tim said. “We just kind of go about our business. We’re very honored and surprised that someone thought so much of the things that we’re doing to nominate us for this.” Added Sherry: “We’re very appreciative. Our chapter works very well together, and we receive a lot of compliments on things we do to keep things moving. Tim and I do a lot with the youth. Tim and I are retired teachers …. [The chapter] asked for our help and expertise in the youth area. They asked to help train the youth and expose them to opportunities and help them enjoy aviation.” Pam, EAA 310504, has been an active member of EAA Chapter 91 in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, for around 35 years, serving as the chapter secretary and treasurer. At AirVenture, Pam has volunteered in a number of capacities, including in the ultralight and homebuilt areas. During her years as a volunteer with Chapter 91, Pam has seen the chapter
become very active, and she’s happy she could help contribute to its growth. “Well, it was a do-nothing group for a while, and after a time, after I’d been in it for say four or five years, we got more vital, got more involved,” she said. “We just stirred things up more and found things to do, and then the big thing was building the hangar. That was our first really big project, and I just jumped right in with two feet and helped raised money. We had different kinds of projects and donations and that kind of thing. It just gives me some satisfaction, especially when you’re among a bunch of people who are so involved and vital and interested in a particular subject. I just like being involved when I can.” John Mellberg, EAA 109395, has been a docent at the EAA Aviation Museum for a number of years, helping to greet and give information to visitors. An avid modeler and history buff, John built and donated the 1-to-36 scale D-LZ 130 Graf Zeppelin II model that hangs near the entrance to the museum and also gives occasional presentations on different aviation topics. “It’s emotional. I’m overwhelmed by it,” John said about being named a Volunteer of the Year. “It brings tears to my eyes. I had no expectation for this.” Bill, EAA 685278, has been involved with EAA as a volunteer since 2000. As a former Army helicopter pilot who has flown a variety of types, Bill began as an announcer during AirVenture when there was anything happening with helicopters on the field. In addition, Bill also volunteered at Pioneer Airport throughout the summer. Like many volunteers, Bill began his involvement because of his interest in aviation, but he has grown to enjoy it so much because of the people he gets to spend time with during AirVenture. “Well, there are 18 of us who are the rotary wing team up there [in the announcer’s stand], and we get together once a year, spend a week together, and everybody goes home,” Bill said. “They’re really a neat bunch of people, and that’s the key to the whole thing.” John Wiegand, EAA 129921, is a yearround volunteer at EAA’s print/mail center, doing anything that needs to be
done, including running and fixing machinery. Finally, Mert, EAA 156, is an avid homebuilder and has been volunteering at the Communications Center on the AirVenture grounds for over 20 years. As a bit of a handyman, Mert does just about anything needed. A three-numbered EAA member, Mert has been part of the organization since nearly the beginning and has stayed involved because of the people. “I think it’s probably the people,” he said. “I think Paul [Poberezny] was right. You see more people are willing to volunteer, and the standard of excellence they’ve developed, and they’re proud to be part of EAA. I guess that’s, to sum it up, that’s about the only thing I can say. … I never imagined that it would be anything like this. When we started out, I really had a very small part of it, because I’m trying to put together a business, a farm business. Raising five children and putting them through college is not an easy chore. We managed it, and EAA has grown far beyond what we ever expected it to.”

Each day this week, we’re running one of the winners of EAA’s Pilot Your Own Adventure Contest, supported by Flight Outfitters. This entry placed fifth, out of 267 entries received. AFTER PASSING MY INSTRUMENT written
exam, I figured if we were going to spend the money on an instrument rating, why not make it a bit more exciting than just flying approaches in the local area? Why not take an epic, fun-filled trip around the country? Fortunately for me, I had an instrumentrated pilot for a husband who was willing to be my safety pilot, as well as the perfect airplane — our flying club’s Mooney M20J, fresh out of annual — hangared at the ready to get us around the entire United States.

FLIGHT / PAGE 4 On September 20, 2020, we packed the airplane (to the brim and just below max gross) and set off into the sky. Over the course of two weeks, we flew over islands, mountains, deserts, and two oceans and overflew Canada and Mexico. We saw incredible places and met incredible people along the way. Although I had the “hood” on the vast majority of the time, I did also fly a few VFR legs, especially when we knew we’d be passing over sights not to be missed, and boy were there some stunning views! The Hudson River Corridor and being surrounded by giant skyscrapers was the most spectacular view of all. Having grown up in New York City, flying over it in a singleengine piston was something I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to do. Circling Niagara Falls was another incredible sight, and the approach at Mackinac Island — just gorgeous. Seeing the Grand Prismatic Spring from the ground was neat, but seeing it from the sky was absolutely incredible. Other sights we enjoyed were camping in
and exploring West Yellowstone, flying over the Rockies, visiting the Museum of Flight at Boeing Field in Seattle, flying right over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, landing on the famous 16R in Van Nuys, and catching a glimpse of LAX through the clouds.

FLIGHT / PAGE 6 After departing Catalina Island (which is a must-see), we had an experience that many pilots will likely never have. As we were flying along and enjoying the perfect VFR day en route to Thermal, California, Los Angeles Center asked if we could help locate two downed military aircraft, a KC-130
and an F-35B, which were suspected to be within close proximity of the airport area. It was reported that the two aircraft had experienced a midair collision during refueling ops. We looked everywhere quite intently, scouring the ground below, and finally located the KC-130 that appeared to have landed safely in a field. We never did find the F-35B, but later learned the pilot ejected safely with minimal injuries.
After landing in Thermal, just to say we landed at an airport with an elevation of -114 MSL, we departed to the east (after a long, slow climb to altitude to cross the 9,000-foot elevation). After a long day of flying, we landed in Flagstaff and enjoyed an excellent sushi dinner at our hotel and got some much-needed rest. The next day held something special: the approach into Sedona and landing on a mesa surrounded by beautiful red rocks, which was something I’ll never forget. After a delicious meal at the airport restaurant, Mesa Grill, we decided to continue on through the evening to get to Pecos, Texas. One of the coolest parts about this nighttime leg was seeing the stark delineation of city lights between Mexico and the United States. It was fascinating to see how densely urbanized it was on the Mexican side in Juarez in comparison to El Paso. The next day, we made a brief stop in Austin, Texas, to enjoy some delicious barbecue for lunch and then left for New Orleans. We enjoyed NOLA so
much that we stayed an entire day there, exploring The National WWII Museum (a must-visit for military history buffs!) and, later, Bourbon Street with a “Hurricane” in hand while watching all the talented street performers. On the last day of our trip, instead of spending time in Florida as initially planned, we had lunch with fellow Mooney friends in Mobile, Alabama, and then decided to fuel up in Cross City, Florida, (cheap fuel) and head home to beat the tropical storm heading northeast. There was a plethora of emotions when we touched down at our home airport in Concord, North Carolina, that evening and were greeted with a “welcome home!” by none other than legendary controller Adam Dancy, which made my night. But the icing on the cake was taxiing around the corner to find my CFII, George, who was waiting by the hangar with a bouquet of flowers for me. All in all, an excellent learning experience and amazing way to build time toward my instrument rating.

Sue Gerencser Honored With 2021 Dorothy Hilbert Award Making our convention grounds look their very best BY SAM OLESON
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
FOR THE PAST 18 years, Sue Gerencser,
EAA 1049125, has been helping out with a variety of maintenance-related projects around the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh grounds prior to convention. For her dedicated service for nearly the past two decades, Sue was named the 2021 Dorothy Hilbert Award winner in a ceremony that took place on Sunday afternoon at Volunteer Park. The Dorothy Hilbert Award is given to a female volunteer who exhibits the passion, dedication, and devotion for

volunteerism that Dorothy presented throughout her life and time spent at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. Sue’s favorite duty prior to convention is setting up the numerous flags around the grounds, but she’s involved with a number of other projects as well, including cleaning buildings, setting up picnic tables, cleaning showers, assisting with gardening and the thousands of flowers at AirVenture, and crafting. When Sue received the initial email that she’d been named the Dorothy Hilbert winner for 2021, she thought it was a joke. “I went to delete the email because I thought it was a joke,” Sue said with a
laugh. “I don’t feel like I’ve done anything extraordinary to win anything, and I didn’t say anything to anybody for about three days, and finally, I told my husband. I said, ‘Read this because I think it’s a joke, and I’m going to delete it.’ Well, he already knew about it, but he didn’t tell me. That was my first thing was ‘This is a joke, I’m going to delete the email.’” As someone who admitted that she doesn’t necessarily attend AirVenture for the airplanes, Sue pointed out that her experience with other volunteers and the enjoyment they as a group get out of volunteering, particularly crafting, makes it all worth it.

“The other volunteers and I started doing crafts in the ladies tent,” Sue said. “Several of the little girls that I worked with, their mothers would come back the next year and tell me, ‘The girls could hardly wait till they could get back to Oshkosh and work with Miss Sue.’ I heard that a dozen times at least, because I enjoyed working with the girls, with the kids. The ladies tent is so enjoyable. So many women, they wouldn’t come and I don’t think their husbands would come if they couldn’t go to that tent.”

AIRVENTURE TODAY
AROUND THE GROUNDS
AIRVENTURE 2021 HIGHLIGHTS: HANG GLIDERS HANG GLIDERS ARE perhaps one of the most affordable
and purest forms of flight, and contrary to popular opinion, they do not require mountains or cliffs to fly from!
WHAT IS HANG GLIDING AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM PARAGLIDING? Hang gliding and paragliding are two forms of footlaunched ultralight flight. Typically, these craft are flown in the same places, but each has unique characteristics of transport, setup, and flight. Hang gliders are made of aluminum or carbon fiber, stainless steel cable, and Dacron, and they weigh no more than 90 pounds. Gliders typically soar between 20 and 30 mph, although some can reach speeds in excess of 80 mph. Paragliders on the other hand, weigh less — typically 25-50 pounds depending on gear — fit in a backpack, and usually take far less time than hang gliders to set up. There are many different levels on which hang gliding and paragliding can be pursued. There are those who enjoy simple top of the hill to bottom of the hill sled rides. Some who enjoy soaring in smooth ridge lift. And others who want to gain thousands of feet of altitude and fly long distances. This is a sport of progressions — it is truly a lifelong pursuit with a lifetime of learning. “EAA is about recreational flying, and hang gliding is one of the purest forms of recreational flying,” said Rick Larsen, EAA vice president of programs, chapters, education, and museum, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. “It’s affordable, and it’s accessible, whereas you might go up to warbirds and say, ‘This is awesome,’ but owning a P-51 for most people will never be in the cards. But you go to the other end of field, and you go, ‘I can do this. I can afford this.’ Another reason we are highlighting them this year at AirVenture is because a lot of people still think it’s flying off hills, mountains, cliffs, but you don’t have to have that. You can fly them off flat land with a tow. It’s a different way to experience flight, and we want to show people who want to fly that this is an option, too.” FUN FLY ZONE At a 900-foot grass runway adjacent to the Ultralight Barn, you will find the mecca of all things related to hang gliding, and more. Attendees will have the opportunity to take a look at a classic vintage 1970s hang
glider on display that Rick donated to the EAA Aviation Museum. “Hang gliders have come a long way, and attendees will be able to take a look at what a typical hang glider looked like in the ’70s compared to now,” Rick said. “This old glider that we have here at the museum — a buddy and I owned it and flew it back in high school — it was a standard Rogallo wing glider, and it flies, but it’s very inefficient in terms of how it flies. You look at gliders today, and they have almost the same performance as a high-performance sailplane. It’s not uncommon in a new hang glider to fly for hours at a time, and that was certainly not possible in these old gliders, but it was certainly still a blast!” While in the Fun Fly Zone, you’ll also have the opportunity to visit with Hang Glide Wisconsin, Kitty Hawk Kites, and The United States Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association — all of whom are conveniently located under one tent!
HANG GLIDE WISCONSIN Located in Whitewater, Wisconsin, HGW is the Midwest’s premier hang gliding destination that provides discovery flights and lessons with experienced
and professional pilots. HGW will have a glider present at AirVenture and will do demo flights towing a hang glider with a Dragonfly, a two-seat ultralighttype aircraft.
KITTY HAWK KITES Kitty Hawk Kites will also be present with two replica gliders that it displays at its home base in North Carolina: a 1902 Wright glider and a replica of an 1890s Otto Lilienthal hang glider. KHK will be demonstrating ground tow demos using a winch. THE UNITED STATES HANG GLIDING AND PARAGLIDING ASSOCIATION The USHPA is a nonprofit membership-based organization whose mission is to ensure the future of free flight. USHPA offers members helpful resources and advice, and when necessary advocates on behalf of the sport to preserve the future of flying. USHPA also offers pilot rating programs, structured instructor certification programs, and a training structure for tandem and aero towing. Rick said he’s excited to showcase hang gliders at AirVenture this year, and to share his passion with other pilots and enthusiasts. “To me, it’s one of those forms of flying that is about as birdlike as you can get,” Rick said. “You’re not flying in something that is large and heavy. This is something that you pick up, and in the right conditions, you take a few steps and you’re flying.”

EVERY YEAR, MORE than 10,000 aircraft
fly to Wisconsin for AirVenture. Of those, nearly 3,000 are showplanes — vintage aircraft, warbirds, homebuilts, aerobatic airplanes, etc. — that are displayed around the grounds. But some visitors may notice other airplanes parked here and there that didn’t fly in at all, because they’re part of the EAA Aviation Museum collection. Because our museum exhibits rotate, many of these aircraft are only viewable by the public during AirVenture, spending the rest of the year in long-term storage on the convention grounds. Here’s a guide to some of these airplanes that you’ll see as you wander the neighborhoods of AirVenture.
AIRCRAFT: 1946 DE HAVILLAND DH.98 MOSQUITO B.35 Known as the “wooden wonder” because of its construction, the Mosquito was a fast and versatile fighter bomber built by de Havilland in the U.K. and Canada. First flown in 1940, more than 7,700 were built until the type went out of production in 1950. Our example is on loan from the collection of Kermit Weeks.
AIRCRAFT: RUTAN MODEL 72 GRIZZLY The Grizzly is a one-of-a-kind aircraft designed by Burt Rutan. First flown in 1982, Rutan used the four-seat Grizzly for short takeoff and landing (STOL) research. Sporting a large canard, which, like the main wing, has large Fowler flaps, and slender spring gear, the distinctive airplane is unmistakably Rutan.

CHERISHING YOUNG EAGLES Young Eagles Co-Chairman Sean D. Tucker shares his love for the program

WITH EAA AIRVENTURE Oshkosh 2021 com-
ing after a gap year, aviation enthusiasts around the world are excited to finally meet up with flying buddies. Young Eagles co-chairman and air show pilot Sean D. Tucker is no exception to this. “I’m looking forward to seeing all my EAA family,” Sean said. “The Young Eagles pilots, the Young Eagles coordinators, the kids that are going to be there … [I’m excited to] just start inflaming our passions again, because we lost a year and that was tough on everybody.” Sean D. Tucker has been a member of the EAA community for many years, performing at Oshkosh for the first time in 1992. Having been mentored by aviation greats such as Paul and Tom Poberezny, Charlie Hillard, and Leo Loudenslager, Sean has worked hard to repay the favor to the younger generations. “They took me under their wing, and I really started understanding what family is all about in the sky,” Sean said. “They helped mold my career, helped mentor me to have reverence for the magic of flight. The whole community understands that the youth of America are just jewels that need to be cherished and mentored, because they are the future leaders of our country. I’ve been flying kids since the Young Eagles program began.” The Young Eagles program, beginning in 1992, has flown over 2 million kids. Chairmen over the years have included actors Cliff Robertson and Harrison Ford, test pilot Gen. Chuck Yeager, and Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger and First
Young Eagles co-chairmen Jimmy Graham and Sean D. Tucker inspire today’s youth to become tomorrow’s aviators.
Officer Jeffrey Skiles. Serving as co-chairman along with Sean is NFL tight end Jimmy Graham. Despite succeeding such important people in aviation history, Sean holds other EAA titles at a higher importance. “Number one, I’m an EAA family member,” Sean said. “I’m just a part of this team, which is magnificent. It’s been an honor and a privilege to be a part of this team, whether I’m the chairman, the co-chairman, or a pilot that is spreading the word. It’s all very important.” The Young Eagles pilots and volunteers are truly important to the Young Eagles program. “What’s really important is … to let all the volunteers and coordinators and pilots know how important they are and how critical they are to enabling young kids to their full potential and how good of work they are doing,”
Sean said. “I just want to thank all the folks who held steady with the dream of inspiring the next generation.”
I JUST WANT TO THANK ALL THE FOLKS WHO HELD STEADY WITH THE DREAM OF INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION.

As the Young Eagles program evolves, free flights are not the only thing Young Eagles volunteers are doing to help inspire the next generation. Some new Young Eagles programs include the Build and Fly program and the Young Eagles Workshops. The EAA Young Eagles Build and Fly program is an intensive RC model building and flying initiative to introduce youths to aircraft construction and to the fundamentals of flight. This program is designed for EAA chapters to partner with local Academy of Model Aeronautics clubs, where the chapter can purchase a program kit with everything needed to build the RC model. The EAA Young Eagles Workshops program is a oneday or multiple-day experience put on by EAA chapters for local youths to introduce them to the basic elements of airplanes and aviation. Using content, materials, and a guidebook provided by EAA national, chapters can help encourage a passion for aviation in their local areas. “The programs are awesome because you light that spark within, you engage them, and now you take them to the next step on their journey,” Sean said. “I’m trying to help my local chapter on the Workshops and Build and Fly, and I think taking it to this level with these programs is exactly where we need to go with our next steps.” Overall, Sean D. Tucker is proud to be a part of the Young Eagles program.
“The Young Eagles, they have the largest civilian air force in the world, sacrificing their time and energy for a good cause to inspire the youth of America and spread the word that your kid, no matter color of your skin, rich or poor, your kids are precious,” Sean said. More information about Young Eagles can be found at the Blue Barn, as well as online at YoungEagles.org. PHOTO BY STEVE DAHLGREN

Kevin Coleman returns to Oshkosh
KEVIN COLEMAN IS back at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, flying his Extra
300 SHP, which has an incredible roll rate of 400 degrees per second and +/- 10g capabilities. Kevin has been performing since 18 years of age and has logged more than 2,500 hours. Kevin was the highest-placing contender at the 2007 Aerobatic Championship, earned a position on the U.S. Advanced Aerobatic Team in 2015, and became the first American to ever compete in the Challenger Cup in 2017. Kevin has also flown and placed in multiple Red Bull Air Races throughout the years. Flying has always been a part of Kevin’s life. Both his father and his older brother performed in aerobatics before him. At 10 years old, Kevin started flying lessons with the late Aerobatics Hall of Famer Marion Cole. They grew close, and upon Marion’s death in 2011, Kevin established the Marion Cole Memorial Scholarship in his honor. Kevin continued on with his flying after lessons with Marion, soloing on his 16th birthday and earning his private pilot certificate on his 17th birthday. Kevin was one of the younger performers, starting his career at 18 years old, but continued his aviation education, graduating from Louisiana Tech University in 2013 with an aviation management degree at 22 years old.

Papua New Guinea after defeating cancer BY ERIN HENZE
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
AS ONE OF the co-founders of Samaritan
Aviation, Mark Palm already had a hectic life when living near the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea. Whether he was applying anti-venom to a snake bite or helping to fly a woman in labor to the only nearby hospital, there was never a quiet moment in his life. Unfortunately, this exhausting lifestyle didn’t change when he and his family moved back to the United States. Mark was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoma in late 2019. Now in remission two years later, it’s interesting for Mark to look back. “I lived over [in Papua New Guinea] for 10 years with my family,” Mark said. “I found out I had cancer three months after we returned. I was very fortunate to face cancer … here in America.” It can be jarring to see the differences in health care and life quality between the United States and the small villages along the Sepik River Mark tends to in Papua New Guinea. “Right now, they don’t have any capabilities for that type of cancer,” Mark said. “If I was born in New Guinea and was living in those villages, I wouldn’t be alive today.” Mark and Samaritan Aviation are working to improve medical care in the remote areas that they serve in Papua New Guinea. With the only nearby hospital being between one and three days away for most people, a new mode of emergency transportation was definitely needed. When Samaritan Aviation was founded in 2000, it brought a seaplane to transport patients between villages and the hospital. In the over 20 years that Samaritan Aviation has been providing support, it has helped people with a large variety of medical issues and emergencies.
“Forty percent of our flights are mothers and babies,” Mark said. “There’s a lot of things out there that the people deal with in those remote communities. Snake bites, malaria, tuberculosis, crocodile bites, bird attacks. Aviation provides hope to those who don’t have it.” Transporting patients isn’t all they do to help. With a program called Ministry Hospital, Samaritan Aviation helps to provide food, clothing, and support for patients while at the hospital. For nonemergency situations, it also provides medical supplies for the villages. “We serve 40 different remote clinics with basic medical supplies,” Mark said. “This last year we served 119 villages that were directly impacted [by COVID].” Now that Mark is in remission, he plans to go back to Papua New Guinea and bring them PPE and other critical medical supplies, as well as continue to fly patients. Along with supplies, Mark is bringing a new seaplane, which can be seen on display at the EAA Seaplane Base.
“We use Cessna 206s on amphibious floats,” Mark explained. “We buy an older airplane and do a lot of modifications. The government of Papua New Guinea asked us to expand our operations to the Western Province of the island, so that’s where this airplane will be going, to expand our operations.” Though they get a lot of help from the government of Papua New Guinea, Samaritan Aviation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. “We’re a Christian nongovernmental organization,” Mark said. “The heart of Samaritan Aviation is to serve, to offer medical services to these remote communities. Our goal as an organization is to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the people out in the remote communities.” Samaritan Aviation is based at the EAA Seaplane Base. There, Samaritan Aviation and Mark will be presenting their new seaplane, as well as selling merchandise and sharing their stories. “We’d love to talk to people about what we’re doing,” Mark said, “and talk about how aviation is making a huge impact on these remote communities.”

FLIES LIKE A HAWK, LANDS LIKE A KITTEN BY FREDERICK A. JOHNSEN
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
WHEN 34 KITTYHAWK biplanes rolled out of
the shop, the Depression put a padlock on the door in 1934. And that might have been the end of the line, if Bob Coolbaugh of Newmarket, Virginia, hadn’t swung into action in 2012. Bob bought the wreck of a Kittyhawk, one of five thought to be in existence in varying states of disrepair. And the big debut for Bob’s restoration is EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021. To the
too-casual observer, the Kittyhawk might blend in with any three-place sport biplanes of the late 1920s and early 1930s. But stand in its presence for a few moments, and construction nuances manifest themselves. Catch the reflection on the underside of the wing, and the old-school cambered airfoil adds a touch of vintage class. The horizontal stabilizer stands free of the fuselage and the vertical fin, with gaps that allow for adjusting its angle of attack for pitch trim. And if the rudder looks like something off of a classic prewar Stearman, Bob says that is no accident. Lloyd Stearman and Kittyhawk founder Allan Bourdon worked together before the birth of the Kittyhawk, and Stearman’s influence is logical. The Kittyhawk might owe its name to the storied location of the Wright brothers’ first powered flight, yet aviation lore says the test pilot commented after its first flight in 1928 that the biplane “flies like a hawk, lands like a kitten.” The company’s logo included a docile pussycat.

A SIMPLER WAY TO FUEL It's like base fuel on the road. PHOTOS BY FREDERICK A. JOHNSEN
Designed for sometimes-lumpy grass field operations, the Kittyhawk’s main gear struts use a combination spring and oil cushion to damp out bumps. Bob says the gear hangs down about a foot lower in flight than with weight on wheels. All that cushion can give the plane a soft landing, but he says it is important to let the Kittyhawk damp out its own bounces as it settles on the springs, rather than chase them with the stick. Bob’s Kittyhawk has a supplemental type certificate for the Kinner engine used on World War II PT-22 trainers, giving it a boost in horsepower that this airplane used when it was a ride-hopping floatplane from about 1940 to the early 1970s, when an engine stoppage led to a crash that separated the Kittyhawk into several chunks. The short run of Kittyhawks relied on various versions of five-cylinder Kinners after initially trying a German Siemens engine that did not work out, Bob explains. Bob invested eight years in remaking his Kittyhawk. With the aid of about 95 percent of the drawings for the design, he made new wooden wing structures and repaired damaged steel fuselage tubing.
Bob says the design flies more like a biplane from the 1920s than the 1930s. “This is more a 1920s handling … kinda flies truckish,” he explains. But it is “honest and stable,” Bob adds. “I’m not going to talk bad about it because she’s an honest old plane.” And that says something about Bob’s approach to vintage aviation. He likes to give newbies rides to acquaint them with classic aircraft, and he likes to talk about his classic Kittyhawk. “The big thing is we need more and younger people who are interested in finding and rebuilding these old airplanes.” “I consider these things works of art,” he says. And there is no finer gallery for such classic art than AirVenture.

for veterans, Eric Rood, EAA Lifetime 192552, is a perfect fit to volunteer with EAA’s Timeless Voices of Aviation oral history project, which collects the stories of veterans and other aviation personalities, well-known or unheralded, to preserve for future generations. Eric first volunteered with Timeless Voices at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2006 and has been a mainstay with the program for more than a decade. Eric’s father was in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II and in the Air Force during the Korean War. After putting together a program for a reunion
In the best interests of attendees, exhibitors and David Clark Company employees, we have decided not to exhibit at EAA AirVenture in 2021. The good news? of his father’s Korean War unit in 2003, Eric began to interview some of the members of the unit for his own oral history project. By the time he finished researching and accumulating the equipment he’d need, it was 2006. Eric interviewed a few of the veterans that summer. Then he attended AirVenture and began to assist with Timeless Voices for the first time. Since then, Eric has done more than 200 interviews. Of those 200, three have stood out: Robert “Bob” Shroats, a member of the 388th Bomb Group who flew shuttle bombing missions from England and Italy against Axis targets and then landed at friendly
bases in the Soviet Union as part of Operation Frantic during World War II; Bob Arn, a C-46 pilot who flew missions over the Himalayas; and Walter Klarin, who worked on the electric propellers that would eventually be used on the B-29s that dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. “You get to know stories that have never been told or written down,” Eric said. “The things you hear, you don’t know about it. It’s nowhere else. … It’s very rewarding. You’re just in awe of what they did.” As someone who didn’t have much experience conducting an interview w h e n h e f i r st g o t st a r t e d w i t h Timeless Voices, Eric made sure to credit his mentors Mike DiMiccelli and Mel Smith for helping him get to where he is now. Currently, Eric is looking to pay it forward, as many EAA volunteers do. “It’s been a great program,” he said. “I’m kind of looking for somebody to mentor, to carry it on.” If you’d like to talk to Eric about his volunteer work, send a note to editorial@ eaa.org and we’ll connect you. — Ed.
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Volunteers make EAA AirVenture Oshkosh — and just about everything else EAA does — possible. This space is dedicated to thanking and shining the spotlight on volunteers from the community. Sadly, it cannot capture all of the thousands of volunteers who give so much to the community every year. So, next time you see a volunteer at AirVenture or elsewhere, however they are pitching in to make EAA better, be sure to thank them for it. It’s the least we can do. Do you know a volunteer you’d like to nominate for Volunteer Spotlight? Visit EAA.org/Submissions.

Freight Dogs Wanted Matt Younkin is looking for stories from retired freight pilots BY ERIN HENZE
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
FAMOUS AEROBATIC PILOT Matt Younkin, EAA 864693, is
looking for the stories of old “freight dog” pilots. In the hopes of documenting the stories of these heroes, Matt has brought his father’s old Twin Beech, newly restored after almost 20 years sitting partially disassembled. “I’m planning on putting the airplane together exactly the way it was, and displaying it on the corner of Wittman and Celebration,” Matt said. “My film crew is going to be there, and … [we want to] pull these folks in and document their stories.” Matt has been heavily involved in the freight pilot world for his entire life, flying during school breaks with his dad on freight runs. “My dad purchased this airplane the year after I was born,” Matt explained. “I would get to go with him when I was out of school during the Christmas and summer breaks. We would fly down to DFW [Dallas/ Fort Worth airport], where we would meet four or five other Twin Beeches on the ramp … they were all good friends.” With some of his favorite childhood memories being linked to freight flights and the Twin Beech, it wasn’t surprising when Matt started flying air shows with his own Twin Beech. It was at these shows that Matt realized how many interesting stories these freight pilots had. “When I started flying the air shows in my Twin Beech in 2007, people that used to be freight pilots would
often come up to me and compliment me, or sometimes criticize me, on what I was doing with that airplane,” Matt said. “They felt the need to tell me one or two of their stories that would just make the hair on your arms stand up… stories and events that they shouldn’t have survived because all the cards were against them.” There was no limit to the cargo carried by these pilots. While many carried mail or food, some moved more unusual freight, such as the time Matt’s father carried dolphins and porpoises between aquariums. Many times, these pilots also put their skills to noble uses, such as bringing food and supplies to refugees during disasters or to residents in the Arctic Circle. “There’s no limit to what they used to use the airplanes for,” Matt said. “I’ve got a tremendous amount of respect for the airplanes, and even more so for the pilots who flew them to make a living.” It is because of all of this that Matt wants to honor freight pilots by documenting their memories. “I consider these guys to be among my heroes,” Matt said. “What they did with Beech 18s was way more difficult and way more dangerous than what I’m currently doing with mine.” So, if you are an old “freight dog” and want to share your story, go find Matt and his crew at the corner of Wittman and Celebration. “Please stop by, give us the opportunity to capture your stories on film,” Matt said. “If you’re camera-shy, stop by anyway and just allow me to shake your hand and say thank you for what you did back in the day when it counted.”

AROUND THE GROUNDS
Lost and Found Everything you need to know about the Lost and Found, plus more! BY ERIN HENZE
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
WHEN ON VACATION, everyone is afraid of
losing something important. At EAA AirVenture 2021, the Lost and Found office has you covered. Located just west of the Brown Arch, the Lost and Found office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. officially, although there’s usually someone there until around 9 p.m. If you find something, whether it be a phone, a wallet, or sunglasses, bring it straight to the Lost and Found. This includes vendors finding lost items. “That’s our biggest problem,” said Lost and Found co-chairman Gary Sternberg. “We really wish vendors would turn the items left at their exhibits immediately to Lost and Found.” If you bring your cellphone, the Lost and Found asks that you keep it unlocked. That way, if you lose it, the volunteers at the Lost and Found can try to call one of your contacts to figure out who the phone belongs to. If you lose something, come to the Lost and Found first. It’s very likely someone has already turned your item in!
However, if you have lost or found a c h i l d , p r o c e d u r e s a r e a l i ttle different. “Stick around the area where you last saw [your child],” Gary said. “We have strict orders, if we or someone else finds a lost child, they stay right there and we don’t move them. Even when security comes, we try to stay right there.” Over the years, a variety of strange things have been brought in. “A glass eye from the showers,” Gary said. “We’ve had a parrot in the past. One of my favorites was a little dog named PeeWee, a little Yorkshire terrier.” If you realize you lost something, but you’ve already gone home, you still can get your item back. Call the Lost and Found. If they have it, arrangements will be made to ship it back to you at your expense. If no one comes in to pick up an item, it will likely eventually be donated. However, high-end items, such as cameras, are usually kept until the next year. Even if you don’t have something to find or turn in, guests are always welcome to come and chat. “Anybody’s welcome to stop by at any time just to say hi,” Gary said.

NEW GRAF ZEPPELIN II EXHIBIT GRACES MUSEUM PROMENADE BY JOHN M. MELLBERG, EAA 109395
THE EAA AVIATION Museum’s new Zeppelin
We offer hot coffee, doughnuts, fresh fruit, salads, sandwiches and much more. Red One Market has everything you need to make your stay more enjoyable.
CONVENIENTLY LOCATED SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO LEAVE THE GROUNDS!
exhibit has been completed for viewing in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The exhibit showcases the newly restored 1:36 scale miniature of the D-LZ 130 Graf Zeppelin II and the 1:250 scale model of the “original” D-LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin, plus newly donated Zeppelin artifacts, including Zeppelin china flown on both of the Graf Zeppelins and two unique and rare Baitz dolls, configured as court jester characters. These two dolls flew around the world on the Graf Zeppelin’s 1929 flight, brought along by Zeppelin captain Hans Von Schiller as gifts to a U.S. Navy captain, Franklin D. Buckley, and he passed them on to me years ago. The Zeppelin exhibit is beautifully positioned near the front entrance in the museum along the upper promenade where the Graf Zeppelin II model can be viewed close up and from below on the ground floor where it can be seen from across the museum proper. Also displayed is a scale model of the new Zeppelin NT-07 (built by my friend Michael Robson of Great Britain), a semi-rigid design that first flew on July 2, 2000, the 100th anniversary of the first flight of the first Zeppelin airship in 1900. The exhibit configuration was orchestrated by Ben Page, EAA’s museum collections curator, working with EAA’s
exhibit design staff. Ben is also a fellow Zeppelin enthusiast. It was my pleasure to work with Ben and his boss, Ron Connolly, EAA’s director of museum and education, providing us with the workshop space to undertake the restoration of the GZII model. EAA’s facilities staff also generously provided assistance as needed. In particular, I’d like to recognize one EAA staff member, Bauken Noack. He was responsible for the design of the scaffold superstructure to hold the Zeppelin model aloft in the EAA Aviation Museum’s ceiling. He actually orchestrated the physical raising of the model while on a telescopic scaffold and secured the model overhead. Bauken had a personal interest in this project, as it was he who, as a 5-year-old boy, accompanied his father on a walk-around/ walk-through tour of the actual Graf Zeppelins when they had been retired from service and were in their respective hangars at Frankfurt am Main International Airport, Germany, in 1939, prior to their dismantling and the outbreak of World War II. A sad ending for these two historic Zeppelins. Construction of the Graf Zeppelin II model was a labor of love for me, one that took more than 17 years. As a docent, I’m extremely proud that the model has a longterm home at the EAA Aviation Museum.

ONE OF THE central themes of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021 is a commemoration of
the 75th (plus one) anniversary of the end of World War II. This is a time for us to pause and reflect on the valor and the sacrifice of those veterans who saved the free world more than three-quarters of a century ago. Every year, scores of beautifully restored warbirds come to Oshkosh. Each day, in no particular order, we’ll highlight some of the aircraft you might see around the convention grounds this year.

MANUFACTURER: HAWKER AIRCRAFT LTD. CATEGORY: FIGHTER YEAR INTRODUCED: 1937
Often overshadowed by its younger brother, the Supermarine Spitfire, the Hawker Hurricane was a British fighter that first flew in 1935. Hawker had built a series of successful biplane fighters in the interwar period, but the Hurricane was the company’s — and the RAF’s — first modern monoplane fighter (after the Bristol M.1 used in World War I). During the storied and pivotal Battle of Britain, the Hurricane made up the bulk of the RAF Fighter Command and accounted for a majority of the enemy aircraft shot down. There were nearly 15,000 Hurricanes built from 1937 to 1944. Only a handful remain in flying condition. P-51 MUSTANG
MANUFACTURER: NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION CATEGORY: FIGHTER YEAR INTRODUCED: 1942
Arguably the most iconic American fighter of the war, the P-51 Mustang went from contract to rollout of the prototype in just 102 days, and first flew about six weeks later. Early versions were powered by Allison engines, but the airplane really hit its stride once it was fitted with the more powerful Merlin. The Mustang’s impressive range enabled pilots to escort U.S. strategic bombers deep into German territory, providing far greater protection than was previously possible. P-51s were found in multiple theaters of the war, flown by U.S. and Allied forces as fighters and in the ground-attack role. More than 15,000 Mustangs were built, and the type is a mainstay of the warbird community today. PHOTO COURTESY OF EAA ARCHIVES

AIRCRAFT ANNIVERSARIES BY HAL BRYAN
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
EVERY YEAR, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh becomes home to thousands of aircraft. Some of them are here to be displayed or perform in one of the air shows, while others form the centerpieces of thousands of campsites. In some cases, though, there’s another reason, one that’s cause for specific celebration — the anniversary of an aircraft type’s first flight or introduction. At the time of this writing, we know of several types that are here to celebrate this year, including some holdovers from last year — the AirVenture that wasn’t. So, as you walk the convention grounds, when you see one of these airplanes, be sure to stop and wish it a
happy birthday. In addition, two of EAA’s divisions, the Vintage Aircraft Association and the International Aerobatic Club, are celebrating their 50th anniversaries this year, so take some time to help them celebrate as well.
SONERAI John Monnett, EAA Lifetime 15941, designed and flew the Sonerai single-seat air racer back in 1971, more than 25 years before founding Sonex Aircraft here in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. SKYBOLT The Steen Skybolt is a classic homebuilt biplane designed by schoolteacher Lamar Steen that first flew in 1970. More than 400 have reportedly been built, all from plans.
