One-of-a-Kind Twin-Engine RV Creates Stir BY FREDERICK A. JOHNSEN
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
WAIT — WHAT? A twin-engine RV? Only
at AirVenture. Or wherever it flies, for that matter. It’s the only one going. Jim and Ginger Tomaszewski of Clayton, Georgia, flew their stunning and diminutive TwinJAG to Oshkosh where it generates a lot of buzz. This airframe began life as a single-engine RV-6A quick-build kit in the 1990s. After flying it as a single for nine years, Jim, EAA Lifetime 590427, who has flown everything from Aztecs to DC-8s, “decided to turn it into a twin-engine.” PHOTO BY CONNOR MADISON

Jim said he kept the systems simple — each engine feeds from its own gas tank with no tank transfer between the two. “I didn’t want fuel going through the cabin,” he explained. He figured out performance on one engine, including the potential loss of one engine on takeoff. Jim limits the airplane to runways at least 3,500 feet long, he said, to give enough room for aborting a takeoff if sufficient single-engine airspeed has not been achieved. But at speed, “I get about 200 feet a minute on one engine,” he added. An experimental amateur-built category aircraft, the TwinJAG RV uses a pair of Corvair engines. But Jim is quick to point out these horizontal six-cylinder powerplants are far from their automotive origins, with aviation-grade parts including new crankshafts making them viable for flight. He coaxes a 175-mph cruising speed from these engines.
SATURDAY, JULY 31, 2021
Jim figures the TwinJAG has an endurance of about three and a half to four hours. “Problem is, I have a twoand-a-half hour butt,” he added. Jim Tomaszewski is not an engineer by trade, but he studied up on what such a radical conversion should entail. His self-taught plans and calculations proved to be about 95 percent correct when reviewed by a couple of trusted engineers, he said. “My wife says I put the ‘mental’ in experimental,” he quipped. The new nose contains a baggage shelf. He figures on a 650-pound load capability for the TwinJAG. “That’s real close to what it was as a single.” During the conversion to a twin, Jim used a modified RV-10-style nose gear. And the cockpit went from a simple steam-gauge layout to a glass cockpit IFR airplane. He said it makes a stable IFR platform with a two-axis autopilot. He likes what the TwinJAG offers as an IFR cross-country transport. His mantra for the project is: Simplicity plus redundancy equals reliability. And the name TwinJAG? That’s for Jim And Ginger, of course.

Tracing History Following the Oregon and California trails STORY AND PHOTOS BY PETER SHANNON, EAA 1248421 Each day this week, we’re running one of the winners of EAA’s Pilot Your Own Adventure Contest, supported by Flight Outfitters. This entry placed first, out of 267 entries received. While all stories have been edited for grammar and style prior to publication, they were judged as submitted, with no editing of any kind. — Ed.
IN THE PIONEER days, St. Joseph, Missouri,
defined the frontier. Before the transcontinental railroad and telegraph, it was a natural assembly point for westbound pioneer wagon trains. Reached via steamboat, St. Joseph marked the beginning of the Overland Trail into the vast territories, offering provisions and even a last night of hotel accommodation before months of hardship on the journey to Salt Lake City and beyond, California. So it was there that I found myself standing in the midday July heat outside the Pony Express National Museum, eastern terminus of the venerated mail service connecting California in 10 days via galloping horse. Gathering provisions for my own journey west, I had a restored Citabria 7ECA to fly to its new home in California and aimed to experience the route pioneers took, to see the scenery they saw, and hopefully, to glimpse from the air remnants from that time of their journey.

AIRVENTURE TODAY
PONY EXPRESS
FLIGHT / PAGE 4 The flight would be low and slow and follow as closely as possible the route of California-bound pioneers, tracking the Oregon Trail up the Platte River and over South Pass in Wyoming, branching southwest to the Great Salt Lake, and crossing the desert westward to join the Humboldt River across Nevada to Donner Pass and thereby into California. An honest stick-and-rudder flyer, the Citabria is a fine aircraft for this journey, offering tremendous all-around visibility and spacious comfort for long periods in the air. Finishing my errands around town and laden with everything a good camp kitchen would need, I loaded the provisions. Lifting off from St. Joseph, I turned west into Kansas and into an undulating landscape brilliant with sunshine. The road west draped over regular depressions and elevations of corn to the horizon. Overflying Marysville, I joined the Little Blue River northwest and upstream into Nebraska, the farm towns of Fairbury and Hastings passing on the vast flattening level floor below. Toward evening, the Platte River came into view, a sprawling expanse of sandy brown tones in the softening light, more quicksand than water. I joined the Platte at Fort Kearny, a prominent U.S. Army outpost and way station where pioneers could resupply. Passing west into the setting sun, flashes of lightning blanketed the far horizon. Setting down on a grass strip gracing the shore of
Johnson Lake, I prepared camp and a fire as booming thundershowers passed to the north. After breakfast, I flew upstream to Julesburg, an Overland trading post where westward pioneers turned to the North Platte toward Scotts Bluff. The terrain gradually rising, the changing landscape revealed telltale signs of the high country ahead. Distant bluffs and mountains formed the horizon to my left. The engine was a relaxed thrum, 90 mph indicated. There was no rush on this July day. My window swung full open, I looked straight down, the warm summer air swirling through the cockpit. The river sprawled in braided muddy channels below me. The river basin was alive with wildlife, from deer and waterfowl to birds of prey. A flat and seemingly infinite expanse of prairie extended northeast. It is staggering to contemplate how vast, empty, and beautiful this land remains, much as the pioneers must have encountered it. General aviation pilots see our country from a unique vantage point. Neither on the surface bound to a road nor miles up in the stratosphere, our type of flying gives us the perspective to see the landscape as a whole, how it integrates together and changes over each horizon. In a small airplane, we can we truly absorb the beauty, the vastness, and even the history of our country. While we often fly with the destination taking primacy, if we make a journey mirroring the route of our forebears, following the land and waterways, moving slowly and with
our senses tuned outside the aircraft, flying can be a vivid portal into our history, to witness the past firsthand. So it felt as I passed Fort Laramie, guarding the confluence of the North Platte and Laramie rivers, and then departed Casper, Wyoming, the morning of my flight over South Pass and the Continental Divide. Joining the Sweetwater River and following its shimmering ribbon past Independence Rock and through Devils Gate, I flew over land that seemed scarcely to have changed since 1850. Wagon tracks were clearly visibly below me, with their meanderings of people and animals standing out compared to smoothly sweeping motorized paths. Onward, up the Sweetwater until it is just a trace and then higher still to South Pass. Arid, empty. The terrain and temperature rising, I coaxed my airplane higher to assure myself I’d make it over today. I was in an empty place, not a single soul visible below. Ruins of the occasional stagecoach station lay in a square outline, yard and station-house weathering in the dry desolation.
At the pass, the Wind River Mountains above to my right and dry high country stretching gradually downward farther west, nearly everything was as it must have appeared to the pioneers. As a witness to their journey, my respect grew at each mile. At this moment over lonely desolation, I better understood them and their resolve to journey through an unforgiving land. Over the next two days, my path took me past Fort Bridger and through Ogden Canyon to the Great Salt Lake. I skirted the north shore and crossed the Great Salt Lake Desert to join the headwaters of the Humboldt River, following it across Nevada to Carson Sink and the base of Donner Pass. Waiting for a break in the weather through a night of storms over the Sierras, I slipped over Donner Pass in the early morning calm and down into California’s Central Valley, Sacramento, and the Bay Area. Living history through flight was a rewarding experience in ways I couldn’t imagine. It was like discovering a window into the beauty of our country and our legacy in this amazing land. Left wanting to explore more, I’m already researching the next journey.
PRIZE WINNER A HAPPY CAMPER Thank goodness for friends. Peter Shannon, EAA 124842, said he entered EAA’s Pilot Your Own Adventure Contest at the urging of a friend, and he’s been happy he followed that advice, since he took first place, winning an AirVenture camping experience during the 2021 fly-in convention. The contest was supported by Flight Outfitters. “My friend knew about my flight from last summer,” said Peter, who has been a pilot since 19. “I do love writing and wanted to document the jourPHOTO BY BAILEY FARRELL ney, and the underlying reasons why I took this flight, and what I experienced along the way.” This is his fourth trip to AirVenture and fourth time camping, but first in a camper. “I absolutely love the campsite and camper. It’s been an experience beyond my expectations. I’ve been having so much fun.” Flight Outfitters provided the camper and gear, and all he brought was his hammock, Peter said. He’s been enjoying the vintage and antique aircraft, and wandering among the warbirds, ultralights and STOL airplanes.

WomenVenture Lunch Speaker Shares Her Story to Inspire Others BY BARBARA A. SCHMITZ
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
Col. Allison Black of the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command said she never wanted to be in the spotlight, but she’s learned the importance of sharing her story to inspire others. And when an 8-year-old walked up to the microphone during Wednesday’s WomenVenture Power Luncheon to ask her how she can achieve her goal of becoming a pilot, it was clear her story did just that. “For being so bold, turn around and look at all these people,” Black told the young girl. “You just took the first step to being successful.” She recommended the girl watch videos, read books, and go to the airfield. “I am in awe,” Black said. “I only wish I knew what I wanted to do when I was your age. You have so many opportunities. Look around and decide if you want to fly big, little, fast, or slow planes, and then you just have to choose what it will be.”
Black has always taken advantage of opportunities in her career. She enlisted in the Air Force in 1992 and served as a survival, evasion, resistance, and escape specialist, as well as deputy of the Commander’s Action Group for AFSOC. She has flown more than 3,400 hours, with 2,000 combat hours in the AC-130H Spectre gunship and the U-28A Draco. She is the first female AC-130H Spectre navigator to open fire in combat operations and the first female Air Force Combat Action Medal recipient. Today she is the vice commander of the 24th Special Operations Wing, Air Force Special Operations Command. She said she first learned of the impact she could have on other women in 2001 when she helped the Northern Alliance get a stronghold on the territory in Afghanistan. Gen. Dostum, working with a U.S. team on the ground, called the Taliban by radio. Black later learned that Dostum said: “You are so pathetic that American women are killing you. Surrender now.” A few days later, the Special Forces team came to their home base carrying an AK-47 from the general, with a note thanking her for her work. She also learned PHOTO BY BARBARA A. Col. Allison Black was the keynote speaker at the WomenVenture Power Luncheon Wednesday.
that Dostum told Afghan women the story of American women on airplanes and said, “If you continue to fight, you too will have those freedoms.” It was then she realized the importance of telling and sharing her story.
STRIVE TO BE HUMBLE. WORK TO BE CREDIBLE THROUGH YOUR ACTIONS AND CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE YOU ARE APPROACHABLE.” COL. ALLISON BLACK
“I never set out to make that kind of impact,” Black said. “I just wanted to be good at what I do. I believe it doesn’t matter what you like look, what gender you are. You just need to be really good at what you do, and people will want to be around you.” Her advice to the attendees was threefold: Be humble, credible, and approachable. “Strive to be humble,” she said. “Work to be credible through your actions, and create an environment where you are approachable.” That means you need to be confident and share your story. “I hope I am able to inspire,” Black said. “I’ve had great leaders who have forced me into jobs that I didn’t think I was able to do. But now I’m old enough to say I did pull it off. Experiences gave me the ability to problem-solve. I don’t need to be the expert in the room, if I surround myself with experts ….” Black said you also need to take advantage of opportunities, and be willing to say yes. “Growing up, I never felt like I needed someone who looked like me to chase a role,” she said. “But I learned how valuable that is, having the same background, living the same struggles, to show that it can be done.” She said she also learned how to block out the naysayers and stay focused on where she was going and what she was doing. “I don’t see the awkward stares or hear the awkward comments. I’ve always believed my actions speak for me.” She said she was grateful for being able to share her story with their WomenVenture crowd. “You all have a story,” she told the attendees. “I empower you to share it.”

A GREAT BIG LITTLE BOMBER Jack Bally’s legacy returns to Oshkosh BY HAL BRYAN
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
“IT’S JUST AN AIRPLANE.”
That’s how the late Jack Bally, EAA 348338, a lifelong pilot and builder, described his one-third scale replica of a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress — just an airplane. Never mind that it’s unique in nearly every respect: an enormous miniature four-engine bomber that looks like it could be a giant RC model until the canopy swings open and a person climbs out.
SO LET’S BUILD ONE When asked the big question of why he built himself a one-third scale B-17, Jack’s reply was simple and matter of fact: Because if you scaled down a B-24, you don’t end up with enough wing area. Well, sure, but why build such a thing at all? “Some of my friends were discussing next projects, and we picked this because there isn’t any other ones out there,” Jack recalled. “There’s two-engine P-38s made, and there’s a lot of P-51s, but there ain’t no four-engine bombers out there. So let’s build one.” Jack didn’t have any kind of an engineering background, but a few decades as a carpenter taught him a thing or two about working with his hands. As for learning to work with metal versus wood, he pointed out with a laugh that he “did side two houses with aluminum.”
Obviously, nobody makes a kit for an airplane like this, so Jack bought a set of RC model plans and scaled them up. Staying true to the proportions of the full-scale airplane, the “Bally Bomber,” as it’s known, is 25 feet long, with a wingspan of 34 feet, 7 inches, which is about 8 inches less than that of a Piper Cub. Like its ancestor, the airplane is all metal, 2024 and 6061 aluminum, except for the control surfaces, which are fabric-covered, in this case with Poly Fiber. The engine cowlings are made from composites, but he felt like that was cheating and planned to remake them in aluminum. The only part of the airplane that’s significantly out of scale are the cockpit windows, which Jack roughly doubled in height to improve visibility for the pilot.

BALLY BOMBER / PAGE 12 The airplane is powered by four Hirth F-30 two-stroke, air-cooled, horizontally opposed, four-cylinder engines. The engines are rated at 80 hp, but with no room for a prop speed reduction unit in the scaled-down cowlings, the engines are connected directly to the propellers, resulting in 60 hp at 3300 rpm, or a total of 240 hp. They burn about 4 gph each, for a total of 16, sipping from two tanks in the wings with a total capacity of 40 gallons. In theory, this would provide two hours of flying time with a half-hour reserve. The 46-inch diameter ground-adjustable propellers are solid wood, well painted to look like metal, and are redlined at 3900 rpm, as any faster than that and the tips will go supersonic. Adjusting the props is a complex and tedious affair, multiplied by 12 blades. Walking around the airplane, the loving attention to detail, and Jack’s pragmatic approach to it, is reinforced repeatedly. The markings are fictionalized but credible, and the N-number honors his wife’s birthday. The nose art is an era-appropriate pinup, accompanied by the one word that sums up Jack’s project perfectly: Obsession.
THE BOMBER COMES BACK When Jack started this project, he estimated that it would take about five years. That was in 1999. Eighteen years, nearly a thousand lost weekends, 25,000 rivets, and an

Based on the foot traffic around the airplane, it was a clear winner of that year’s “dead grass award.” Now owned by Larry Neu, EAA Lifetime 104067, the airplane
is a clear contender to repeat that honor in 2021. Larry purchased the third-scale bomber last summer and brought the airplane to Oshkosh from Dixon, Illinois. “I saw the ad on Barnstormers, and I looked at the pictures and was like, ‘Wow, that’s pretty cool,’” Larry said. “One of a kind, 18 years to build. I could never do that. I don’t have the skill, and I don’t have the patience. I thought it was a very unique opportunity [to purchase it].” Larry intends to move the Bally Bomber down to San Antonio, Texas, where he lives, and make a few modifications to it to allow his 6-foot frame to fit in the aircraft a bit better. “I did figure out how I can modify the seat to give me some more room,” Larry said. “Once I get the seat modded, it will be a lot more comfortable. Right now it’s got about a one-hour range, and that’s how long my back can handle it.” Once Larry gets the airplane back to Texas, he’s looking to potentially replace a couple of the engines with electric motors to increase the horsepower and range. In the next few years, Larry plans on taking the Bally Bomber to air shows around Texas and hopes to eventually make it back to Oshkosh. “I’m thinking I’ll be able to triple my range, which will take it from 120 miles to probably close to 400 miles,” he said. “With that, I can make Houston and Dallas [air shows] and even come back up here again in a few years.”

TEXAS TEEN SCRATCHBUILDS SKY PUP BY ABBY OLENICZAK
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
GAGE WIRTZBERGER, EAA 1324792, 18, of
Greenville, Texas, built a Sky Pup from scratch and plans to fly it for the first time in a month. He drove it up from Texas, and it can be seen in the Ultralights area. Gage decided at 16 to build his own aircraft. The blue Sky Pup he built is made out of foam and wood. Gage’s dad flew RC aircraft and introduced the idea of airplanes to him, he said. He has about a month left until he will have earned his private pilot certificate. Gage said he wants to be sure he understands the material well before taking his test. This is his first year at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, and he has enjoyed every minute of it. Whenever Gage brought up AirVenture, his friends always said it’s a great place to go and would get super excited about it.
Gage said what makes aviation appealing to him is “getting off the ground and up with the birds.” After looking at the Titan Tornado airplane and a few others, his parents gifted the Sky Pup plans to him for Christmas. They told him it was easy to build and the safest one to fly. It took him a little over a year to build, and he worked at a chicken farm for two years to afford the materials. Locating the material and avionics took a lot of research, time, and money, he said. The foam needed to be at least 2 inches thick because of the heat in Texas. For his future, Gage said he may do oil line flying or possibly go to college for an engineering degree. He wants to get the Sky Pup up as soon as possible and appreciates the help he had building it from his dad and little sister in their shop. “It was definitely a family project,” Gage said.

2021 BROWN ARCH BRICK AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED BY SAM OLESON
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
Piedmont Airlines will be in the EAA Aviation Gateway Park at booth C23. Stop by to talk to a recruiter.
EVERY VOLUNTEER WHO contributes to making EAA AirVenture Oshkosh the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration deserves thanks, but the Brown Arch Brick Awards exist to give special attention to a few people who go above and beyond. The 2021 Brown Arch Brick Award recipients are Larry Huber, Bob McLaughlin, Lee and Paula Crevier, Dr. Stephen Leonard, and the Shay family. The recipients were honored at a ceremony on Friday morning at the Brown Arch. Beginning in the 1980s, Larry, EAA 285890, started volunteering as a flightline volunteer in the Vintage area. Currently, he’s the vice chairman of showplane aircraft and camper registration, helping to coordinate and assist arriving pilots. “It’s an honor,” Larry said of receiving the Brown Arch Brick Award. “I’m not a person that likes the notoriety, but I consider it quite an honor. I’ve put a lot into EAA, and EAA has given me far more than I’ve put into it.” Bob, EAA 188831, has been a longtime volunteer at Kermit Weeks Hangar: EAA Flight Research Center in Oshkosh, as well as at AirVenture. He became the workshops chairman in 1989 and
transitioned to co-chairman of the Builders Education Center & Workshops in the early 2000s, a position he held until 2016. He’s also an A&P/IA mechanic, and those skills have helped immensely at the Weeks Hangar. “I was very honored and always amazed over the years that you get recognition for doing what you love,” Bob said of receiving the award. “The reward is doing what you’re doing and being around the people you volunteer with.” Lee, EAA 355459, and Paula, EAA 477989, began volunteering Larry Huber with EAA in 1991 and have helped out in a variety of areas, including Pioneer Airport, Ultralights, Convention Headquarters, and basically anywhere else needed. Having been involved as volunteers for three decades now, Lee and Paula have developed strong friendships, which, along with genuine enjoyment of their duties, has kept them coming back to Oshkosh. Bob McLaughlin
“I WAS VERY HONORED AND ALWAYS AMAZED OVER THE YEARS THAT YOU GET RECOGNITION FOR DOING WHAT YOU LOVE. THE REWARD IS DOING WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND BEING AROUND THE PEOPLE YOU
Lee and Paula Crevier
VOLUNTEER WITH.”
BOB MCLAUGHLIN
“Good people,” Lee said. “We have a lot of friends … I mean there was just a lot of people that we met that we knew, and we didn’t know they were up there like that until we went up there. Then we ended up with the Dr. Stephen Leonard camping group and it’s like, ‘Okay, you go there, you get to camp, you get to see the friends that you made from Canada.’ It’s like an annual thing to go up there and touch base with people you’ve made friends with for years and years.” Stephen, EAA Lifetime 286293, joined the EAA Aeromedical Advisory Council in the 1980s and has been assisting EAA members and pilots, as well as the organization, with medical-related issues ever since. As part of the council, he’s been an active participant in shaping aviation medical policy as well as personally Shay Family assisting fellow members. “[The Aeromedical Advisory Council] was initially formed to provide aviation medical advice to Paul Poberezny so he could take informed positions when working with the FAA to help shape regulations,” Stephen explained. “That role has expanded, and because the FAA medical team regularly attends AirVenture, the council members have had the chance to develop mutually productive, personal relationships with them. They trust us, and we are able to provide important input into their policy decisions. The greatly expanded Special Issuance program, and the development of criteria for AMEs to verify qualifications and issue certificates on the spot for a number of conditions that previously required deferrals, are direct results of ideas and input from our council. Finally, we are available as a resource to EAA members to guide them toward resolution of certification problems that they have had.” Finally, the Shay family — which includes husband and wife team Bill, EAA 292424, and Margaret, as well as daughters Raquel and Sophia, EAA 1051870 — were honored with a Brown Arch Brick Award for their service as volunteers with EAA’s business development team since 2009. Since the Shays began volunteering, they’ve had the chance to meet a variety of new people each and every year — a key factor in why they love coming back each year. “[I enjoy] the interaction I have with other people and the ability to show people who have never been to Oshkosh before the experience and show them my passion,” Bill said. “The girls have enjoyed the people they’ve been able to meet through the volunteering, to where they’ve been keeping in touch with people year-round. … They keep connections going for the past 11 years they’ve been volunteering.”

DEDICATED FUEL STATION VOLUNTEERS KEEP AIRVENTURE RUNNING BY BARBARA A. SCHMITZ
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
Tradition. It’s what brings Orrin Howard and Lorraine Schram back every year to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh to volunteer and work at the fuel station. The two combined have volunteered for the fly-in convention for 101 years and were awarded for their efforts with service awards on Thursday. “These two have been very dedicated volunteers, and between them have over 100 years of dedicated service,” said Volunteer Chair Judy Knight. “They have been such a joy to work with.” Each morning, Orrin, 86, and Lorraine, 83, man the fuel station, located in Camp Scholler, after which Lorraine goes to volunteer in Vintage, thankful for its air conditioning. But Orrin, EAA 170123, usually stays at the fuel station for the afternoon shift, too. Orrin’s father volunteered at the AirVenture fuel station many years ago, and when he was not able to help anymore, Orrin and his wife took over. Right: Orrin Howard and Lorraine Schram wait for customers to serve at the AirVenture fuel station. The two have a combined 101 years of volunteering during AirVenture.
Even after his wife died, Orrin kept coming back and volunteering. In fact, he has volunteered for 52 years, and close to 30 of those years were at the fuel station. Orrin’s nephew, Bobby Howard, of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, plans to keep volunteering at the fuel station a family affair. He said that when his uncle can no longer do the work, he plans to take over. He’s been at every fly-in convention, too, since the Rockford days. Lorraine said she came to AirVenture with her husband and first volunteered in flowers. Even her husband’s death 25 years ago didn’t stop her from coming back and volunteering. This is her 49th year of volunteering. Orrin said he has been attending the fly-in convention since he started PHOTOS BY BARBARA A. SCHMITZ
going with his parents when the convention was held in Rockford, Illinois. He’s volunteered at “the shop, the museum, all over.” After both of their spouses died, Lorraine and Orrin became a couple and have continued their volunteering traditions. They live in Lone Rock, Wisconsin, and started volunteering this year the week before the convention. The people are what always bring them back each year to Oshkosh. “This is such a good group,” Lorraine said. “Plus, in fuel, we get to meet a lot of people from different areas.” Orrin agreed. “The nice thing about this job is that we meet everybody since they need to have fuel.” That’s for certain. On an average day before the convention, they pumped 800 gallons a day. But during the convention they pump twice that daily, servicing about 1,600 Gators, golf carts, and scooters.
But one of Orrin’s favorite “customers” was EAA founder Paul Poberezny. “He would come and sit in the chair with me to talk, or ask for gas for his electric golf cart,” Orrin said laughing. “He’d get such a kick out of that.”
“PEOPLE HERE ARE SO FRIENDLY, AND WE ALL SHARE THE SAME PASSION.” LORRAINE SCHRAM
The two said they plan to be back and volunteer next year, unless their health doesn’t permit it. Orrin said he has lung problems and can’t walk far. Previously, Lorraine broke her hip and then fell in her camper this week, which is giving her some pain. They said they particularly enjoyed being back this year and seeing people, something they did little of during the pandemic. Many people know their names and they’ve become friends after so many years. And that’s no surprise to the couple. Lorraine said, “People here are so friendly, and we all share the same passion.” Left: Orrin Howard fills up a vehicle at the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh fuel station, located in Camp Scholler. He’s been volunteering for 52 years for AirVenture, and almost 30 of those years have been in the fuel station.

JULY 27, 2021, was one for the record books. Two eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and LEARN MORE landing vehicles) flew in front of a crowd of thousands at the Tuesday air show at EAA Opener BlackFly AirVenture Oshkosh 2021. Booth 500 The design and mission of the dozens of Volocopter VoloCity advanced aerial mobility projects racing Booth 226 toward operation may be different, but they have had one thing in common: stealth mode. After years of rigorous flight testing, the BlackFly personal aerial vehicle and the VoloCity air taxi/freight vehicle made their first public flights. When I discovered on Sunday that these flights were going to be happening at AirVenture 2021, I got full-body chills. After years of covering these innovative companies and watching videos of flight online, I was thrilled with the prospect of seeing them fly with my own eyes. Over the next two days, every time I told someone about these impending flights, I’d get goose bumps. I was sure to be at the air show flightline early on Tuesday. Scanning above the crowd, I spied the brilliant white propeller-studded halo of the VoloCity planted in the center of the taxiway. Thirty meters to the left and right of the taxiway, two sleek BlackFly vehicles perched on the ground, poised for flight. Nearby, I overheard some people talking. “This is the future of flight,” one man said. As the vehicles flew in turn, I watched as people all around me pulled out their cellphones to record this historic moment. I’ll admit, my vision blurred for a moment with tears of wonder. Look for an upcoming article in EAA Sport Aviation magazine featuring the exciting developments of the groundbreaking eVTOLs that flew at AirVenture 2021. Be sure to check out Opener’s BlackFly at Booth 500 and Volocopter’s VoloCity at Booth 226.

WARBIRDS
WWII SPOTTER’S GUIDE BY HAL BRYAN
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
ONE OF THE central themes of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh
2021 is a commemoration of the 75th (plus one) anniversary of the end of World War II. This is a time for us to pause and reflect on the valor and the sacrifice of those veterans who saved the free world more than three-quarters of a century ago. Every year, scores of beautifully restored warbirds come to Oshkosh. Each day, in no particular order, we’ll highlight some of the aircraft you might see around the convention grounds this year.
P-38 LIGHTNING MANUFACTURER: LOCKHEED CATEGORY: FIGHTER YEAR INTRODUCED: 1941 Before his groundbreaking work on the U-2 and the SR-71 Blackbird, legendary Lockheed designer Kelly Johnson led the team that designed the P-38 Lightning. Powered by a pair of counter-rotating Allison V-12 engines, the Lightning was fast, as its name implied. P-38s served in multiple theaters of the war, but they are best known for their efforts in the Pacific. America’s highest-scoring ace of the war, Richard Bong, scored his 40 victories flying a P-38. More than 10,000 Lightnings were built, and it’s the only American fighter that was in full production from Pearl Harbor to V-J Day. Several airworthy examples remain today, including the beloved Glacier Girl.

B-25 MITCHELL MANUFACTURER: NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION CATEGORY: BOMBER YEAR INTRODUCED: 1941 Named for the late Gen. Billy Mitchell, the man generally seen as the father of the U.S. Air Force, the North American B-25 medium bomber first flew in 1940. It was used in every theater of the war by the U.S. Army Air Forces and Marine Corps and multiple Allied air forces as well. EAA’s example, Berlin Express, had a starring role in the 1970 film Catch-22, but the type is best remembered for the historic Doolittle Raid, in which 16 B-25s were flown off the deck of the USS Hornet and bombed Japan for the first time in April 1942. Nearly 10,000 B-25s were built. More than 40 are believed to be flyable today.

AIRVENTURE TODAY
Longtime EAA Legal Advisory Council Chairman Alan Farkas Steps Down BY SAM OLESON
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
AS THE OUTGOING volunteer chairman of the EAA Legal
Advisory Council, Alan Farkas, EAA Lifetime 681323, has spent many years assisting EAA members on a variety of legal and FAA-related issues, as well as advising the organization on a number of matters. An aviation attorney based in Chicago, Alan joined the Legal Advisory Council in 2005 and served as its chairman from 2011 to 2021, stepping down as chair on Friday during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2021. Since joining the council, Alan has made himself available to EAA members to discuss a plethora of different aviation-related legal questions on a daily basis. “We have direct contact with the members, and we get exposed to the full, broad array of the membership in the issues that they raise,” Alan explained. “For somebody that is interested in aviation law, it’s an embarrassment of riches, the kinds of questions that the members bring to us. Everything from issues that arise from their own private grass airstrips to issues that involve sophisticated jet operations. Concerns with the FAA, concerns with manufacturers and kit building, just everything you can possibly imagine.” In addition to those duties that take place yearround, Alan also volunteers during the week of AirVenture, where he is involved with forums about legal issues, staffs the advocacy booth in the
membership center for Q&A sessions, and also serves on the government host committee. “The politicians, the regulators that come to AirVenture — we as an organization, we as members have an interest in making sure that they know and understand what it is that they’re regulating,” Alan explained. “And I can give you all sorts of examples of very, very high-level people that have never seen a homebuilt aircraft before, have never seen a kit aircraft being built before, have never seen the different types and variety of aircraft. It’s important that they walk away from EAA with an understanding of the various facets of the industry. So as government hosts, that’s our job. Now it’s fun; it’s enjoyable. I’ve met fascinating people doing that, but the mere fact that we’re enjoying it doesn’t mean that it’s not valuable and important.”
TAKE FLIGHT aboard one of EAA’s unique Flight Experiences
Although Alan is stepping down as the LAC chairman, he will continue to serve on the council as he thoroughly enjoys what he does as a volunteer for EAA and is glad he can help out members, and the aviation industry as a whole, through his service. “I have a strange skill set, and I make a living spending far too much time doing things that don’t necessarily move the ball in a positive direction, dealing with accidents, litigation, and bad events,” he said. “My practice also involves transactional stuff that I would say is benign, but isn’t really doing anything to make the world a better place. My work with the members is rewarding. It’s enriching. I’m making a positive impact. And to be able to use that weird skill set to do things, to help people, is a rare opportunity.”

AROUND THE GROUNDS
Museum Aircraft Spotter’s Guide BY HAL BRYAN
AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
EVERY YEAR, MORE than 10,000 aircraft fly to Wisconsin
for AirVenture. Of those, nearly 3,000 are showplanes — vintage aircraft, warbirds, homebuilts, aerobatic airplanes, etc. — that are displayed around the grounds.
But some visitors may notice other airplanes parked here and there that didn’t fly in at all, because they’re part of the EAA Aviation Museum collection. Because our museum exhibits rotate, many of these aircraft are only viewable by the public during AirVenture, spending the rest of the year in long-term storage on the convention grounds. Here’s a guide to some of these airplanes that you’ll see as you wander the neighborhoods of AirVenture.

This Canadian-built example of the venerable F-86 is one of two in our collection, the other one being the lighted “gate guard” that sits in front of EAA headquarters on Poberezny Road. This Sabre is painted to represent the one flown by famed Apollo flight director Gene Kranz during his deployment to Korea in the mid-1950s.
COZY CO-2
The Cozy was developed with inspiration from Burt Rutan’s iconic Long-EZ. The airplane features side-by-side seating, with an optional third seat in the back. The example on display is the prototype, which was introduced at Oshkosh in 1982 by designer and builder Nat Puffer.
