OSHKOSH! WELCOME TO
BY JACK J. PELTON
IF THIS IS YOUR first time in Oshkosh for AirVenture, welcome. If you’re a returning guest, welcome back. Regardless, welcome home. Whether it’s your first or your 50th, we have a lot of great things for you to see and do this year.
We’re excited for the return of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds and the Avro Lancaster to help us celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The USAF Materiel Command is bringing a variety of modern hardware, and even the Italian air force is getting in on the action thanks to a special appearance by its demonstration team, the Frecce Tricolori. Legendary designer and longtime friend of EAA Burt Rutan is returning this year, celebrating 50 years of the VariEze, and we’re expecting a huge number of Aeroncas to join us as we honor 80 years of the Champ. And that list just barely scratches the surface.
Our afternoon and night air shows have spectacular lineups, featuring some new faces and old favorites. In addition to thousands of aircraft to check out both in the air and on the ground, you’ll find forums and
workshops where you can learn about everything from aviation history to welding. There are hundreds of exhibitors and plenty of places to shop, a variety of food options, and evening programming at the Theater in the Woods and the Fly-In Theater.
In addition to being the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration, AirVenture is also known as aviation’s family reunion. You’ll reconnect with old friends, make a lot of new ones, and your aviation family will get bigger and closer. Speaking of families, we’re especially proud to be able to continue to offer free youth admission, supported in part by Boeing. It’s so important that we keep bringing more people into the world of aviation, and AirVenture Oshkosh is the one opportunity they have to see it all in one place.
So, as you wander the grounds, remember the Oshkosh rules, one of our oldest traditions: Be kind, respect the aircraft, pick up trash if you see any, and, perhaps most importantly, thank the volunteers. We absolutely couldn’t do it without them.
Welcome to Oshkosh!

Vintage Wings of Canada’s “Victory Flight” to Soar This Year
THREE ICONIC WORLD War II-era warbirds — the Supermarine Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane, and North American P-51 Mustang — will represent Canadian wartime aviation at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024, as Vintage Wings of Canada brings those historic aircraft as part of the “Victory Flight” at Oshkosh in July.
The aircraft will be at AirVenture as part of the centennial celebration for the Royal Canadian Air Force, joining the Canadian Forces Snowbirds aerial demonstration team and other RCAF aircraft, both vintage and contemporary.
Each of the aircraft has a unique story:
• Spitfire Mk IX — Often considered the most beautiful aircraft design of its day, the “Spit” became legendary with its performance during the Battle of Britain in 1940. The Vintage Wings of Canada example is painted in the markings of Arnold Rosemond, a Canadian who flew more than 65 missions before being shot down over Normandy in 1944. It received the World War II Reserve Grand Champion and Phoenix Gold Wrench awards at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2018.
• Hurricane Mk VII — This versatile aircraft was an extraordinarily capable dogfighting airplane that was also developed into numerous variations from fighter-bombers to carrier-based Sea Hurricanes. This aircraft was built by Canadian Car and Foundry in Fort William, Ontario. It carries the markings of Flight Officer William Lidstone “Willie” McKnight, who was part of the Royal Air Force’s all-Canadian 242 Squadron and Canada’s most outstanding fighter pilot during the first 18 months of WWII.
• P-51D Mustang — One of the best-known and capable fighter aircraft of WWII, more than 16,000 Mustangs were produced beginning in 1940 in response to a British plea for more fighter aircraft from the U.S. This aircraft is
painted in the markings of 442 Squadron as they appeared toward the end of the war. It is dedicated to brothers Larry and Rocky Robillard from Ottawa, Ontario, who both flew with that squadron during the war.
Vintage Wings of Canada is the creation of Michael Potter, who founded the Vintage Wings of Canada Foundation and has been collecting and flying vintage aircraft since the mid-1990s. The aircraft of his collection are maintained in flying condition and flown annually throughout the summer to support air show events, commemorative military flypasts and other special events. Several aircraft of the collection are owned directly by

Potter has put together a collection of the finest examples of Canada’s, and indeed the world’s, most historically significant aircraft. The collection is housed in a 24,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art hangar at the Gatineau-Ottawa Executive Airport near Ottawa, Canada.
Current plans call for the aircraft to arrive at the start of AirVenture week and to initially spend several days in the Warbirds area. The aircraft will also fly on selected days in the afternoon air show prior to spending the final weekend on Boeing Plaza.

Site Upgrades for Attendees at EAA AirVenture 2024
THERE ARE MULTIPLE improvements on the grounds for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024, many of them based on suggestions from attendees in 2023 and previous years.
Among the upgrades in 2024:
Along the flightline
More water bottle filling locations! There are additional bottle fillers at each of the 13 hydration stations on the flightline. There’s also signage at each station to increase the visibility this year. In addition, those locations are more visible on the visitor map (look for the blue icons) so that they can be more easily spotted.
Cooling stations! A new feature in three locations on the flightline are cooling stations sponsored by GE Aerospace, a great relief for those hot days at AirVenture. A cool mist is available at the touch of a button at these stations, located at (look for the blue mist icons on the map):
• Wittman Road, just north of Homebuilders Headquarters
• Wittman Road, just north of the Ultralight area
• Knapp Street, between the Wearhouse and Four Corners
Lost and Found finds new home: The Lost and Found building is in a new location in 2024. This volunteer-run area is now located on Knapp Street, just east of Convention Headquarters (Exhibit Hangar A).
WomenVenture pavilion: The home for WomenVenture activities, including forums, exhibitors, and women aviation authors is now along Knapp Street, between the Forums area and EAA Press Headquarters.
New access road and bus route: The expanded Camp Scholler camping area just north of Ripple Road will feature a paved Aspen Road and extended Doolittle Road that connect with Ripple, allowing easier access for camping units. In addition, a new bus route will bring people from that area to the Camp Scholler bus turnaround near Theater in the Woods, giving better access to the flightline.
More improved campsites! EAA-member demand for these improved sites with electric and water hookups continues to grow, so more than 100 additional such sites have been added in the west section of Camp Scholler.
Air traffic
July 25 departures: This year’s FAA Notice includes a limit on Fisk arrivals until 8 a.m. CDT on Thursday, July 25, ONLY, to allow departures from Wittman Regional Airport. This will help alleviate departure backups on what is often the busiest day for air traffic during AirVenture.
For more information on visitor services, maps, and other updates, check the AirVenture website or the EAA Events app.
Frecce Tricolori comes to Oshkosh
THE FRECCE TRICOLORI, the military aerobatic team representing the Italian air force (ITAF), will be making its first Oshkosh appearance since 1986 when it arrives to participate at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024.
The Italian team, formally known as the 313th Aerobatic Training Squadron, is scheduled to be at Oshkosh on Tuesday, July 23, as part of the third North American tour in its history. With the already-announced demonstrations from the Canadian Forces Snowbirds at AirVenture 2024, it marks the first time that the EAA fly-in will have two military demonstration teams in a single year at the weeklong event.
“It’s been nearly 40 years since we’ve welcomed these skilled Italian air force pilots to Oshkosh, and to have them here in 2024 adds an unprecedented dimension to this year’s fly-in,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. “EAA AirVenture Oshkosh has always been an international event, and the presence of Frecce Tricolori further confirms Oshkosh as the place for the aviation world’s annual family reunion.”
Frecce Tricolori — which translates to “Tricolor Arrows” in English — will arrive at Oshkosh on Tuesday, July 23, and is scheduled to participate as part of the afternoon air show. Its aerial demonstrations at AirVenture will be a modified display featuring tight flyby formations and colorful smoke trails in the team’s Aermacchi MB-339PAN trainer jets.
The team was officially founded in 1961, combining aerobatic units from throughout the Italian air force. It consists of 10 pilots (nine formation pilots, plus a solo) from combat-ready operational squadrons throughout the ITAF and is currently commanded by Lt. Col.
had previously made North American tours in 1986 and 1992. This year’s tour is in support of the Royal Canadian Air Force centennial that is also bringing the Snowbirds to Oshkosh.
“With the Snowbirds highlighting our celebration of the Royal Canadian Air Force centennial, the numerous military jet demonstrations already committed, and now the Italian military aerobatic team joining us, 2024 will be an unforgettable year at Oshkosh,” Larsen said.

SkyHawks are Canada’s only military parachute demonstration team, composed of 13 jumpers from the Canadian Army, the Royal Canadian Navy, and the Royal Canadian Air Force. This includes both Regular Force and Reserve members with diverse professional backgrounds. They will perform during the afternoon air shows at Oshkosh. Meanwhile, the U.S. Air Force’s A-10 Demo Team — marking its final season of air show performances — will be at Oshkosh on July 22-25. The Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, affectionately known as the Warthog, has long been a favorite on the air show circuit. The demo team is based at Davis-Monthan AFB and commanded by Maj. “Turning the Tide — 1944”
80-year commemoration at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024
EAA WILL PAY tribute to the heroes and sacrifices made during the Normandy landings on D-Day (June 6, 1944), and throughout the year 1944, with an 80-year “Turning the Tide” commemoration at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024 on July 23 and 24.
“As the number of veterans from WWII who are still with us are dwindling, it is important to commemorate the events of 1944, and the importance of the campaigns in both Europe and the Pacific to preserve freedom,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. “This year’s programming during AirVenture week will connect the human events and aviation history of that year so those of us today have a better understanding of those times.”
A collection of C-47s from the D-Day Squadron will be on display as part of the commemoration. The Squadron features a fleet of the venerable transports from throughout the United
States. Many of these aircraft were part of a commemorative mission to Europe in May and June 2024. The C-47 played a vital role in transporting more than 13,000 paratroopers to Utah Beach for the Normandy landings.
Afternoon air shows on July 23 and 24 will feature warbirds from both the Pacific and European theaters including the World War II Airborne Demonstration Team. The team will be jumping from their own C-47 using traditional round canopy parachutes, reminiscent of the paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions who risked their lives in Normandy.
The Theater in the Woods presentation on the evening of Tuesday, July 23, will focus on 1944 as well. The presentation will be split into two parts; the first will retell the story of 1944, while the second part will go into detail about the aircraft. Additional aircraft that played key roles in 1944 have also been invited to participate.

Lancaster CF-18 Added to Royal Canadian Air Force Centennial
ONE OF THE rarest warbirds in North America and one of the most modern fighter jets in the Canadian Forces have been confirmed to participate during the Royal Canadian Air Force centennial at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024.
The Avro Lancaster Mk. X bomber, the only flying example of the airplane in North America, will make its first appearance at Oshkosh since 2015. Owned and operated by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Mount Hope, Ontario, this particular airplane was built in 1945 and served with the RCAF as a maritime patrol aircraft until 1963. After more than a decade of outdoor display, the Lancaster was fully restored and returned to flight in 1988. It is painted in the colors honoring Victoria Cross recipient Andrew Mynarski, who flew with the RCAF 419 “Moose” Squadron.
The Lancaster will be at Oshkosh throughout the week and on display on Boeing Plaza. It will also partici-

Take a Book, Leave a Book
EAA Chapter 990 brings free little libraries to AirVenture
BY ANGELA SATTERLEE AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
NEED A BREAK from all the excitement happening this week and not sure how to relax? Stop by the newly added free little libraries for a good book, provided by EAA Chapter 990, out of Kankakee, Illinois. Alex Koerner, EAA Lifetime 1111968, the treasurer of Chapter 990, thought of the idea because of his mother. She makes the trip to AirVenture with him, and every year she always brings new books to read to enjoy her downtime. Alex soon realized that she wasn’t the only person to do this and decided to propose the idea of including the libraries at EAA AirVenture
Oshkosh, and everyone in his chapter agreed to make it happen!
“We were trying to figure out what would make Oshkosh more enjoyable for the entire family,” Alex said. The idea of the free little libraries is to provide free reading material to whoever wants it, adults and children. The free little libraries will run the same as the ones you can find throughout many towns, using an honor system, and will be refilled consistently. If you take a book, you are free to leave a book, or return it for someone else to find. If you

can’t contribute reading material, don’t worry. “Just open the door and grab a book! We’re going to be checking them probably three, four times a day … to make sure they’re fully stocked.” Alex explained.
Alex and his chapter hope to expand the idea in the future. “We’re starting kind of small because we don’t know what to expect, but we’re hoping maybe by next year to maybe have some bigger libraries and more of them throughout the campground, but kind of see what this year brings,” Alex said.
These free-standing libraires can be found on the grounds at the Chapters Pavilion and by the children’s playground in Camp Scholler. Stop by anytime, for a new adventure awaits in every book!

NEWS & INFO
Canadian Forces Snowbirds Return
THE CANADIAN FORCES SNOWBIRDS, one of the most popular military aerial demonstration teams in the world, are returning to Oshkosh for the first time since 2016.
“The Snowbirds are one of the world’s finest military aerobatic flight teams, so their presence at Oshkosh in 2024 is a wonderful addition to AirVenture week as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions. “Along with their elegant precision aerobatics that define their aerial performances, we discovered in 2016 that the team members were enthusiastic and fully engaged in the aviation culture at Oshkosh, and truly enjoyed being with the tens of thousands of fellow aviators on the grounds.”
The Snowbirds are currently scheduled to have a public practice session over the grounds on Friday, July 26, with full performances during the daily afternoon air show on Saturday and Sunday, July
27-28. The team is officially designated as 431 Air Demonstration Squadron and was created in 1971. It has a nearly 50-year connection to EAA, being the first military team to perform at Oshkosh when they flew over the EAA fly-in during the 1970s.
“As a team, we are extremely excited to be representing the Canadian Forces at AirVenture during the centennial year of the Royal Canadian Air Force,” said Maj. Brent Handy, Snowbird 1 and Team Lead. “The opportunity to share our display with such a large gathering of aviation enthusiasts and the chance to meet with our fans will be one of the many highlights of this important year for our dedicated team of pilots, technicians, and support personnel.”
The Snowbirds typically fly their Canadair CT-114 Tutor jets in approximately 60 air shows each year. The nine aircraft used in the performances are piloted by experienced team members from the Royal Canadian Air Force. During the show, the pilots fly at speeds SNOWBIRDS / PAGE 23
PAGE 22 / SNOWBIRDS
ranging from 110 to 465 mph (180 to 750 km/h) and in formation with distances as close as 4 feet of wing overlap. Composed of exciting loops, rolls, and solo passes as well as graceful nine-jet formations, the Snowbirds’ show includes more than 50 different formations and maneuvers over each 35-minute performance.
NOTICE TO AIRVENTURE ATTENDEES
Snowbirds Crowd Line — Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 26-28
Attendees, volunteers, and pilots should be aware that the Snowbirds performances require a larger aerobatic box, necessitating a slight move of the crowd line to the west during the afternoon air shows on those days. Only essential, authorized air show personnel are permitted inside the box during the Snowbirds performance.
The Snowbirds crowd line will run the entire length of the flightline from
Ultralights through Warbirds, in line with the existing speaker poles, about 120 feet west of the regular crowd burn line. This line will be clearly marked.
For air show spectators
Visitors will have access to the regular crowd line area until 1:15 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and until noon on Sunday. At those times, visitors must move back to behind the Snowbirds crowd line. AirVenture guests will not be allowed to leave chairs, blankets, coolers, or other items past the Snowbirds crowd line at any time on those days. Friday through Sunday, Wittman Road will be closed to all vehicular traffic, providing additional space for air show viewing.
For pilots and crew of aircraft parked on the flightline
After 1:15 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and noon on Sunday, pilots or crew of aircraft parked between the two crowd lines will be allowed in the area for a short time
with a security escort to perform urgent, essential tasks. Everyone will need to be out of this area by 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2:45 p.m. on Sunday.
Full access will be restored after the completion of the Snowbirds
performance on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Look for extensive signage on the grounds further explaining the areas and times covered by these necessary rules and guidelines.

Michigan Students Refurbish Homebuilders Welcome Wagon
A TEAM OF students from Northwestern Michigan College recently completed refurbishment of one of the Homebuilders Headquarters Welcome Wagons. The students, enrolled in automotive technology, spent part of the academic year inspecting and upgrading the vehicle, which is one of four Welcome Wagons. Automotive Program Coordinator Wayne Moody, EAA 459389, delivered the Welcome Wagon to the Traverse City campus and oversaw refurbishment efforts. Wayne is a longtime supporter of the Welcome Wagons and was involved in the creation and donation of three wagons to EAA. This is the second Welcome Wagon to be refurbished at the college.
Welcome Wagon Volunteer Chairman Brad Olson commented, “The work that the students performed was comprehensive, helps lower our annual maintenance costs and improve reliability, and gives the students experience with older vehicles.” The Welcome Wagons are in use during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, delivering homebuilt passengers to Camp Scholler, the EAA Aviation Museum, and Red One Markets and throughout the grounds.

MOSAIC Evolves Into Sport Pilot/Light-Sport Aircraft 2.0
BY DICK KNAPINSKI
THE LATE ROCK star Tom Petty yearned to be a pilot, as far as we know, but when he sang “The waiting is the hardest part …” aviators can understand, especially as it relates to the long-awaited MOSAIC rule now in the final stages of FAA approval. With a final rule release date anticipated for early to mid-2025, MOSAIC will move from a proposal to an evolution best described as Sport Pilot/Light-Sport Aircraft 2.0.
During EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024, there will be multiple opportunities to discover what this evolution means for prospective pilots, current pilots, aircraft owners, flight instructors and schools, and the small aircraft industry. Each segment mentioned will see new possibilities for growth while maintaining
As currently written, the rule would increase several regulatory parameters for light-sport aircraft. Notably, it replaces the current arbitrary weight limit with a more flexible approach that uses stall speed as a parameter.
safety. EAA’s advocacy team, which has been working on this initiative for more than a decade, is eager to share those opportunities with attendees at Oshkosh.

As EAA CEO and Chairman Jack J. Pelton stated earlier this year, “With MOSAIC, EAA’s initial ideas have been encompassed in an initiative that will maintain elevated levels of safety while expanding access to training aircraft and foster innovation, as well as bringing economic growth and workforce development into the aviation community.”
Daily briefings on MOSAIC are available from members of EAA’s advocacy team at the advocacy booth located in the EAA Member Center (which is part of the EAA Four Corners) at the following times:
• Monday, July 22: 8-10 a.m.
• Tuesday, July 23: 8 a.m.-noon

• Thursday, July 25: 8 a.m.-noon
• Friday, July 26: 8 a.m.-noon
• Saturday, July 27: 1-3 p.m.
In addition, nine forums are scheduled at various venues for more information to benefit current private and sport pilots, prospective sport pilots, and flight instructors and schools. Check the EAA website or EAA Events app for the details on each of those forums.
As currently written, the rule would increase several regulatory parameters for light-sport aircraft (LSA). Notably, it replaces the current arbitrary weight limit with a more flexible approach that uses stall speed as a parameter. For fixed-wing airplanes, the new definition specifies a clean stall speed (VS1) of 54 knots calibrated airspeed, a maximum level flight speed (V H ) of 250 knots, and a maximum seating capacity of four occupants. These changes represent significant increases over the current rule and would allow larger, easier-to-fly aircraft up to approximately 3,000 pounds to fit the category.
Sport pilots and pilots with higher-level certificates (private, commercial, ATP) who are exercising sport pilot privileges will be able to fly any aircraft meeting the new definition and may continue to carry one
Additionally, the notice of proposed rulemaking introduces new privileges for sport pilots, such as flying aircraft with retractable landing gear and constant-speed propellers, as well as complex aircraft with the appropriate endorsements.
passenger, regardless of seating capacity. Additionally, the notice of proposed rulemaking introduces new privileges for sport pilots, such as flying aircraft with retractable landing gear and constant-speed propellers, as well as complex aircraft with the appropriate endorsements. They will also be allowed to fly at night, provided they hold a current medical certificate or BasicMed certificate.
In comments submitted to the FAA earlier this year, EAA offered several minor alterations to enhance the proposed rule while maintaining high safety standards within the sport pilot/light-sport aircraft community. Recommended enhancements include slightly increasing the stall speed, allowing sport pilots to fly with up to three passengers, providing alternative methods to verify night vision minimums for night-flying endorsements, and maintaining the existing requirements and structure for light-sport aircraft repair certificates.
“All of EAA’s recommendations consider safety as the priority, while envisioning pathways to take full advantage of opportunities that MOSAIC can provide for increased growth and vitality of recreational aviation,” Pelton said.
While the waiting might be the hardest part for MOSAIC to reach the finish line, its realization in the next year will continue in the legacy of EAA’s work to create more freedom of flight over the past 70 years, flowing from homebuilt regulations to Part 103 to sport pilot/light-sport aircraft. We encourage everyone to discover the coming opportunities that are available for you!

Fueling EAA Volunteers With Coffee and Aviation
BY ANGELA SATTERLEE AIRVENTURE TODAY STAFF
THOMAS VAREP-POPOV FELL in love with aviation at the early age of 4, and his passion for it has only grown. Now, he has combined those feelings about aviation with his ability to brew signature coffee and opened Hangar 22 Coffee Roasters. Thomas and his wife, Jenna Kitchings, together sell coffee that is inspired by various airplanes and pilots.
“I took an introductory flight when I was 15, and that was pretty much it. I was sold,” Thomas said. “I started in flight training right away, got my license when I turned 17, and from there I kept going. I was roasting coffee since I was 15 as well, actually. That was just another passion project of mine.”
For Thomas, the idea of brewing coffee just for pilots came about organically. And once he started the process it began drawing people in.
“I just love coffee, and I wanted to save money from buying coffee, so I ended up roasting my own, and from there I was roasting in a hangar. The scent started coming out, everyone loved the smell of coffee, and I started [giving away] cups of coffee, and then that took off into a business.”
Thomas knows the importance of the volunteers and that the great experience that is EAA AirVenture Oshkosh wouldn’t be possible to enjoy without them and all the demanding work they put into helping at the event.
Thomas and Jenna have always donated a part of their profits to organizations that help support aviation and specifically the next generation of pilots and know that EAA does a wonderful job with that, especially with our Young Eagles program.
Hangar 22 has in the past during AirVenture handed out free coffee cups and sold bags of coffee beans, but this year Thomas wanted to kick things up a notch and decided to donate $50,000 worth of coffee to the volunteers at AirVenture on top of that.

“I love the Young Eagles program. I think for so many people who are young, being able to at least be exposed to it and just try it out,” Thomas said. “That intro flight is lifechanging for a lot of youth. For EAA to help with that in such a tremendous way is absolutely crucial to ensuring we have a future generation of aviators, whether that be pilots or just other professionals in the industry.”
Within the next few years Thomas and Jenna want to start a scholarship fund to help support a future pilot who needs financial aid for flight training specifically.

AFMC Platforms and Weapons Showcased on Boeing Plaza
AIR FORCE MATERIEL Command past and present will be on display at Boeing Plaza throughout the week at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024. Additionally, the Air Force Lifecycle Management Center’s Armament Directorate will have a number of weapons on display.
Adding to the impressive lineup put together by EAA, AFMC will have current active test aircraft on display, including the F-15EX, B-52, T-38, and C-12. The National Museum of the United States Air Force is providing former test platforms X-40, X-30, and Mach 5 Waverider. Here are some highlights on a few of the offerings:
F-15EX — From the 40th Flight Test Squadron at Eglin Air Force Base, the F-15EX is a two-seat, multirole fighter aircraft. It is a derivative of the Qatari F-15QA, which is a derivative of the USAF F-15E Strike Eagle. The F-15EX can employ a full complement of air-to-air weapons and has two additional weapons stations compared to the F-15E.
B-52 — From the 419th Flight Test Squadron, B-52s have been part of the strategic bomber force for the United States. The B-52 is capable of dropping or launching the widest array of weapons in the U.S. inventory, including gravity bombs, cluster bombs, precision-guided missiles, and joint direct-attack munitions.
C-12 — From the 419th Flight Test Squadron, the C-12 is a utility aircraft with a lot of versatility, and it flies a variety of missions at Edwards AFB. It can be used for instrumentation testing or flying several flight test engineers around at a time. The C-12s are also used for proficiency training and practicing parachute jumps.
X-40 — The unmanned, unpowered Boeing X-40A was the first-phase flight test vehicle for the U.S. Air Force’s Space
Maneuver Vehicle program that began in the late 1990s. The program aimed to develop small, reusable, highly maneuverable spacecraft for deploying satellites and conducting surveillance and logistics missions.
X-51A — The experimental X-51A Waverider is an unmanned, autonomous supersonic combustion ramjet-powered hypersonic flight test demonstrator for the U.S. Air Force. It was designed to pave the way to future hypersonic weapons, hypersonic intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, and future access to space.
The AFLCMC Armament Directorate designs, develops, produces, fields, and sustains a family of air-to-ground and air-to-air munitions for both the United States and allied nations to defeat a spectrum of enemy targets. It will bring a number of munitions for display, including:
• The AGM-158 joint air-to-surface standoff missile (JASSM) — a nextgeneration cruise missile enabling the U.S. Air Force to destroy the enemy’s war-sustaining capabilities from outside its area air defenses.
• The ADM-160 miniature airlaunched decoy (MALD) — a programmable, low-cost, modular, autonomous flight vehicle that mimics U.S. or allied aircraft to confuse enemy integrated air defense systems.
• The AIM-120 advanced medium range air-to-air missile (AMRAAM) — a radar-guided air-to-air missile with capability in both the beyondvisual-range and within-visual-range arenas. A single-launch aircraft can engage multiple targets with multiple missiles simultaneously.
Youth and Family Activities Expand for AirVenture 2024
A NEW YOUTH aviation activities area located in the Vintage Aircraft Association area on the EAA grounds is the latest edition to the expanding youth and family activities taking place at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2024.
“Nearly all of us involved in aviation today were inspired at some point in our younger years,” said Paul Maloy, EAA’s director of education. “When we began welcoming those 18-and-under at no charge beginning in 2021, we immediately noticed an increase in the number of families at AirVenture. With that, we wanted to create and expand possibilities for families to encourage them to visit and engage with everything AirVenture has to offer.”
The Charles W. Harris Youth Aviation Center in the Vintage area gives youths the chance to have a handson experience by using hammers, pliers, and other tools to discover how aircraft are maintained. Kids will also have the opportunity to talk to pilots and hear their flying stories, as well as get a tour of the pilots’ airplanes. The center will officially open to the public at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 22, AirVenture’s opening day.
In addition to this new experience, families are encouraged to visit the Youth Welcome Center located at the main Four Corners intersection to receive information on all the other activities for youths and families happening through the week. Some of those activities include:
KidVenture — Entering its 25th year, KidVenture invites kids to get hands-on with riveting, engines, electrical wire circuits, propeller design, wooden rib building, RC airplanes, space exploration, and more. (Ages 3-14.)

AROUND THE GROUNDS
What About These Other Airplanes?
A spotter’s guide to the EAA Aviation Museum aircraft around the grounds
EVERY YEAR, MORE than 10,000 aircraft fly to Wisconsin for AirVenture. Of those, nearly 3,000 are showplanes — vintage aircraft, warbirds, homebuilts, aerobatic airplanes, etc. — that are displayed around the grounds. But some visitors may notice other airplanes parked here and there that didn’t fly in at all, because they’re part of the EAA Aviation Museum collection. Because our museum exhibits rotate, many of these aircraft are only viewable by the public during AirVenture, spending the rest of the year in long-term storage on the convention grounds. Here’s a guide to some of these airplanes that you’ll see as you wander the neighborhoods of AirVenture.
Aircraft: North American P-64
The only surviving example of its type, the P-64 was one of six intended for the Royal Thai Air Force but pressed into service as a USAAF trainer in 1941. It was used in a variety of roles postwar, including charter work and cloud seeding, before Paul purchased it in 1963. Paul flew a memorable air show routine in the airplane from 1965 through 1988.
Featuring a Continental C-85 engine, McCauley propeller, BendixKing communications transceiver and transponder, SureFly electronic ignition with a push-button starter system, an alternator and voltage regulator, and a useful load of 410 pounds.
Drawing will take place August 15, 2024 at the EAA Aviation Center – Oshkosh, WI. For complete rules, visit EAA.org/Sweepstakes

FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
TRY YOUR HAND at these trivia questions and find out. The answers, along with a new question, will be in tomorrow’s paper.
In 1985, Concorde, the legendary Anglo-French supersonic airliner, attended EAA Oshkosh for the first time. While that moment was a pivotal one for the convention, it wasn’t the only time Concorde traveled to Oshkosh. What was the final year Concorde appeared at EAA Oshkosh before its retirement in 2003?

Young Eagles
@zacharyzweigle
Greetings from Oshkosh, WIEAA AirVenture 2024, home for the next 10-days.
@flyboydh82
We started the day in the Champ and ended it in the Luscombe just shy of Oshkosh at Dodge County Airport WI, we did just over 12 hours of flying. It was a loooong fun day. We would’ve made it today if it wasn’t for some pesky fog over the western PA mountains.
