FIRST, THERE WAS THE VANITY CASE, IN THE ‘20S, WHEN LADIES wanted an accessory to wear on the most chic of occasions: a handbag that was small but roomy and which could be worn with their most elegant dresses for parties and evenings at the theatre. So, to this end, scrupulously-designed little handbags were invented which were little more than tiny gold or platinum boxes, often decorated with enamelling and set with precious stones, designed to contain a lady’s accessories: all in a precious elegant box of just a few centimetres. Today, the clutch purse is the accessory that became extremely popular before breaking all its stereotypes: it is no longer used only for the evening but is considered to be just the thing to add that glamorous touch at any time of the day. You might naturally expect to find special editions for special occasions of these tiny works of art but the only rule is that there are no rules. So shapes, materials and prices are mixed together

Oggi, è una clutch bag, accessorio che ha conquistato enorme successo e popolarità rompendo prima di tutto i suoi stereotipi: non più indicato solo per la sera ma raccomandato per un avere un tocco glamour a tutte le ore del giorno. and reinterpreted with enormous freedom of design and combinations.

From the extremely exclusive to the most fashionable, from the stylish to a more edgy look, to rocker chic, exotic and cyber. Designers have taken up the challenge by creating a wealth of different versions in wood, metal, plastic, fabric, reptile, crystal and every kind of leather, in the most imaginative designs, with and without colour. But the history of the minaudère is even more fascinating: the name dates back to the 30s, to the great jewellery house of Van Cleef & Arpels, which has exclusive right to the use of the word. The name certainly comes from the French verb “minauder”, which indicates an affected way of behaving in order to attract attention, to please or to seduce. Estelle “Kiki” Arpels, wife of the founder of the House, Alfred Van Cleef, they say, tended to minauder in Parisian salons where she elegantly acted out her role as the perfect woman of the world. However, inspired by Florence Jay Gould, the rich American wife of Frank Jay Gould, the railroad magnate, it was Charles Arpels, who had the idea of creating the minaudère by improving on the already-fashionable vanity case with new technical and design ideas. The minaudère was conceived as a high-end accessory, both for its elegance and its price. They were usually rectangular in shape (15-20 cm long and 2-3 cm thick), and made from the most precious materials, covered with extraordinary stones, and decorated with clasps that were often detachable and which could be worn as diamond brooches. A 1935 advertisement justified the existence of the minaudère thus: “Ladies do not have pockets, certainly not practical pockets. Their handbags get swollen out of shape, disturbing the perfect line of their elegance.” So the minaudère became part of international cosmopolitan high society in the capitals of the world: it was slipped into a velvet or black silk bag of the same shape, which let the precious details be seen. But it was their practicality that made them stand out, for they were useful as well as ingenious. One little minaudère contained all the essential accessories for a woman of the world: in several compartments, calculated to the last millimetre, you could find room for a myriad of small accessories: a powder box, a pocket watch, a lipstick, a dance card, a lighter, a pair of glasses, a pillbox and so on. This ingenious construction is why minaudères can also be considered as small beautifully-designed architectural objects. Though these little treasures are expressions of elegance and opulent luxury, they also have some of the avant-garde feel of modernism. These objects are the result of the art of the finest goldsmiths and they have the look of an extremely elegant period of time but they are also very elegant expressions of the new wind of functionalism that was beginning to blow: a wind that would later give us a new way of seeing everyday objects. +

Ma la storia della minaudère è ben più affascinante, il nome risale agli anni ’30 e ad una grande maison di gioielleria come Van Cleef & Arpels, a cui si attribuisce anche un’ esclusività del termine. Il nome certamente proviene dal verbo francese “minauder” che indica quel modo di fare affettato per attirare l’attenzione, piacere, sedurre. E’ Estelle Arpels, sopranominata « Kiki », sposa del fondatore della maison, Alfred Van Cleef, che aveva, si dice, l’abitudine di minauder nei saloni parigini dove svolgeva il suo ruolo di perfetta donna di mondo e di eleganza ma fu Charles Arpels che ebbe l’idea di creare la minaudière, ispirato dalla ricca americana Florence Jay Gould, moglie del magnate delle ferrovie americane Frank Jay Gould, e di apportare al vanity-case, già in voga negli anni 20, dei perfezionamenti tecnici e di stile. La minaudière nasce come accessorio di eleganza estrema e di estrema preziosità. Il più delle volte di forma rettangolare (15-20 cm di lunghezza e 2-3 cm di spessore), le minaudières sono realizzate nei materiali più preziosi, tempestate di straordinarie gemme, ornate da fermagli, spesso amovibili trasformabili in spille di brillanti. Una pubblicità del 1935 giustifica con qualche slogans la nascita della minaudière : « Le donne non hanno tasche e tanto meno delle tasche utili », «Le loro borse si deformano e si gonfiano disturbando così la perfetta armonia della loro eleganza».

Così la minaudière entra nei codici dell’high society internazionale e cosmopolita delle grandi capitali. S’infilava in una borsa di velluto o di seta nera della stessa forma, che ne lasciava vedere i preziosi dettagli.

Ma ciò che la caratterizzava maggiormente era la sua praticità, utile e ingegnosa la piccola minaudière conteneva tutti gli accessori irrinunciabili per una donna di mondo. All’interno, suddivisa in diversi scomparti, riuscivano a stare, misurati al millimetro, molteplici piccoli accessori: una scatoletta per la cipria, un orologio a scomparsa, un rossetto, un carnet di ballo, un accendino, un paio di occhiali, un porta pillole,…

Ecco perché le minaudière sono anche piccoli oggetti di architettura e certamente di design. In questi piccoli scrigni, espressione di eleganza ma anche di opulenza e lusso, c’è anche un po’ dell’avanguardia estetica del modernismo. In questi oggetti c’è tutta l’arte dei migliori maestri orafi, l’estetica di un’epoca tra le più eleganti ma anche l’espressione di un vento nuovo che comincia a soffiare quello del funzionalismo che darà una nuova interpretazione di tutti gli oggetti del quotidiano. +
