that the concept of “vintage” carries: the smell of humus and soil, of old purple wine, of green timeless landscapes and of the rustic fragrance of woodland. What is the reason for this quest backwards in time, rather than looking towards the future? The concept of “vintage” is used to describe old clothing from prestigious designers such as Chanel, Dior, Hermes and Yves Saint Laurent, and, by extension of meaning, used for any object dating from before 1990 that reflects a particular moment in the history of twentieth-century fashion and design. The mania for vintage is such that the word is now used today to describe any piece that is ever-so-slightly retro. Designing movie costumes coincides with the vintage approach because it is in the spirit of a collector that a

L’idea del “Vintage” è stata impiegata per designare i vecchi capi di stilisti prestigiosi come Chanel, Dior, Hermès, Yves Saint Laurent e, per estensione del termine, per indicare qualsiasi oggetto d’occasione che risalga al più tardi agli anni ‘80 e che rifletta un momento particolare della storia della moda e del design del 20° secolo. La forza del Vintage è talmente travolgente che, ai giorni nostri, questo termine viene utilizzato per indicare tutti quegli articoli anche minimamente “rétro”. Il mestiere di costumista per

designer tries to find accessories that were fashionable at a given time to recreate the illusion of a historical setting through a multitude of items.

Cinema is a great vehicle for “vintage” and old movies can revive a trend: eighteenth-century baroque in Stanley Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon,” Roman hedonism of the ‘60s and the eternal feminine embodied by Anita Ekberg in Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita”... Today’s fashionistas and antique-clothes sellers all have the soul of a costume-designer. A coat by Paul Poiret was sold for more than 100,000 Euros in 2005 and so, in the light of this enthusiasm, the major couture houses are offering copies of past successes, like Yves Saint Laurent’s tuxedo, le Smoking.

In this same vein, the contemporary creations of the two IrishAmerican artists McDermott & McGough draw their strength from the evocative power of the image; living the past as an existential challenge and refusing to be trapped in our contemporary times. They project themselves into whatever period that is best to express what they want to say in their work, using techniques of that period and introducing related decorative and stylistic details. They live “vintage” at its maximum: choosing to fully inhabit a period that suits them best, linking up with the nostalgic quality of the “vintage” spirit: in this case, the Victorian era from the late nineteenth to the beginning of the twentieth century. Thus they live in interiors exclusively furnished with

il cinema ha a che fare con la storia del “Vintage”: è seguendo lo spirito del collezionista che uno stilista cerca di trovare degli accessori, in voga in un determinato periodo, per ricreare l’illusione di un contesto storico attraverso una serie di oggetti. Il cinema è un canale importante per il “Vintage”, basti pensare al modo in cui i vecchi film ripropongono delle tendenze: il barocco del 18° secolo con “Barry Lyndon” di Stanley Kubrick, l’edonismo romano degli anni ‘60 e l’eterno femminile incarnato da Anita Ekberg ne “La Dolce Vita” di Federico Fellini… Dalle fashioniste moderne ai venditori di vestiti d’epoca, tutti hanno uno spirito da costumisti. Un cappotto di Paul Poiret è stato aggiudicato per più di 100.000 euro durante un’asta del 2005. Alla luce di questo entusiasmo, prestigiose case di moda propongono delle riedizioni, come lo Smoking di Yves Saint Laurent.

Con questo stesso spirito, le creazioni contemporanee degli artisti americano-irlandesi Mc Dermott & Mc Gough trovano la loro forza nella potenza suggestiva dell’immagine: vivendo il passato come una provocazione esistenziale e rifiutando di lasciarsi intrappolare nell’epoca moderna, si proiettano nel periodo che reputano migliore per esprimersi con le loro opere, utilizzando tecniche tipiche dell’epoca e introducendo dettagli decorativi e stilistici. Vivono il “Vintage” al parossismo, scegliendo di vivere pienamente in un periodo che preferiscono ed avvicinandosi così alla caratteristica nostalgica dello spirito “Vintage”, in questo caso il

things from last century and wear tailcoats: real dandies, emblematic of this “vintage” movement.

Today, the temples of “vintage” are now the clothing and jewellery auction-sales, flea markets like Villeneuve les Avignon where Ines de la Fressange and her daughter bought used handbags in springtime, the second-hand shops of South Kensington which offer Chanel, Hermes, Ossie Clark and other wonders...

The most sought-after pieces have a designer label or are from before the 1950s. Some of the most beautiful old houses of Fine Jewellery like Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari and Cartier have put their incredible patrimony on public display. The Musée Galliera in Paris and the Fashion Museum of Marseilles are a veritable Aladdin’s cave for lovers of vintage. And ladies, don’t we all have our mother’s Chanel suit from the ‘70s, or our grandmother’s ball dress, tucked away somewhere in our wardrobe? In this sense, vintage is highly emotional and for this reason it should be asked to linger as long as the emotion of Marcel Proust and his little Madeleine which, in an instant, catapulted him back into his childhood...

Vintage firmly says “no” to the massification of fashion, globalization and “Made in China”: it is a “yes” to more tenderness, vulnerability and humanity. +

Vivono così in case arredate esclusivamente con oggetti del secolo scorso e indossano frac: insomma, dei veri e propri dandy che rappresentano iconicamente questo movimento, il “Vintage”. Oggi i “templi” del Vintage sono le aste pubbliche di vestiti e gioielli, mercati come quello di Villeneuve-lèsAvignon, dove in primavera Inès de la Fressange acquistava con la figlia delle vecchie borse e le boutique di articoli usati di South Kensington, che propongono capi di Chanel, Hermès, Ossie Clark e altre meraviglie….

I pezzi più ricercati restano comunque i capi griffati o precedenti agli anni ‘50. Alcune delle più straordinarie maison di alta gioielleria dalla storia centenaria, come Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari e Cartier, hanno esposto il loro incredibile patrimonio. Il Museo Galliera di Parigi e il Museo della moda di Marsiglia sono delle vere e proprie caverne di Ali Baba per gli amanti del Vintage. E noi altre donne, non abbiamo nel nostro guardaroba il tailleur Chanel anni ‘70 della mamma o il vestito da ballo della nonna?

In questo senso il Vintage è una tendenza prevalentemente affettiva e per questo dovrebbe durare nel tempo, al pari dell’emozione provata da Marcel Proust quando gusta la piccola madeleine, che in un istante gli fa ripercorrere tutta la sua infanzia…. Il Vintage dice quindi NO alla massificazione della moda, alla globalizzazione e al “Made in China” e SÌ ad una maggiore tenerezza, vulnerabilità ed umanità. +

There is now a better way to understanding the success of the most popular model in the world, an explanation as to why Kate Moss is not just a fashion phenomenon, a supermodel, who is not just somebody in a magazine, but rather an icon that represents the modern age.

The world’s most popular model has had an essay written about her by the French sociologist, Christian Salmon, which retraces the steps of her success, describing the new liberal period we are now living in, the problems and dramas of Generation X, the influence of the grunge movement, the material and moral recession and today’s new myths.

We have all heard about Kate Moss’ dodgy love affairs, her cocaine addiction, her wild excesses and her financial empire. Twenty years after her fashion debut, she is now, at the age of 36, the subject of a sociological essay. In the book, “Kate Moss Machine” (published by La Découverte), Christian Salmon looks at our recent history through the extraordinary life of a young girl from the outskirts of London who became a glamorous international icon.

The author describes the revolution that has changed fashion since the late 80s and suggests that Kate Moss is the main force behind this change. Kate was discovered in 1989, when she was 14, by a very astute talent scout who picked her out in the crowd at New York airport. She had a natural look, was tanned, and had a kind of beauty that was not perfect when compared to models of that time, which were statuesque and too beautiful to be true. It was the beginning of a myth that would not have attracted any attention just ten years earlier. A revolution was already underway, for fashion was tired of perfect models. Corinne Day, the photographer who launched Kate in The Face, used to dress her models in clothes she found at Camden and Portobello markets, preferred natural light for her photos, and always tried for a more natural approachable kind of feminine beauty. New young underground fashion designers were beginning to make themselves know about the same time; these were names like John Galliano and Alexander McQueen,

C’è una chiave di lettura più profonda per capire il successo della modella più amata nel mondo. Una spiegazione per capire perché Kate Moss non è solo un fenomeno fashion, una top model, un personaggio da rotocalchi ma un’icona rappresentativa della nostra epoca.

Una tesi ben raccontata da Christian Salmon: il sociologo francese, che alla modella più richiesta del momento ha dedicato un saggio in cui ripercorrendo le tappe del suo successo descrive: il periodo storico e sociale di neoliberismo in cui viviamo, le vicissitudini della generazione X, l’influenza del movimento grunge, la recessione materiale e morale e i nuovi miti. In passato, della modella più famosa del mondo si erano raccontati gli amori discutibili, la sua dipendenza dalla cocaina, gli eccessi, il suo impero finanziario. Oggi, sono trascorsi già vent’anni dal suo debutto, ha 36 anni, ed è diventata anche un soggetto di riflessione sociologica.

Nel libro “Kate Moss Machine” (ed. La Découverte), Christian Salmon, interpreta la nostra storia recente attraverso la vita straordinaria di una ragazzina della periferia di Londra, diventata icona glamour internazionale. Nel saggio descrive la rivoluzione che dalla fine degli anni‘80 ha cambiato la moda e indica Kate Moss come la protagonista di questo cambiamento. È stata scoperta nel 1989, Kate ha 14 anni. Un talent scout, veramente molto abile,la nota tra la folla, all’aeroporto di New York, ha un look naturale, abbronzata, una bellezza non perfetta se paragonata alle modelle di quel tempo: statuarie e tanto belle da sembrare irreali. È l’inizio di un mito che dieci anni prima, non avrebbe attirato nessuna attenzione. Era già in atto una rivoluzione, la moda era stanca delle modelle perfette. Corinne Day, la fotografa che lancia Kate su “The Face” veste le sue modelle con abiti trovati ai mercatini delle pulci di Camden e Portobello, sceglie la luce naturale per le sue foto, cerca un ideale femminile accessibile e più vero.

Having no myths of its own, it looks to the past to borrow symbols and ideas in its search for an identity. Fashion designers consider flea markets as depositories of past history that can be draw on, so creating the tendency to mix styles and accessories, and Kate is the best advocate of all of this. +
