In the discussion about Dreamscaping in the first 2011 issue of TJF, we feel it appropriate, looking beyond an initial optimism, to take another look at our colour codes, and it is even possible to imagine a great colour revival in the streets. Seeing the world in colour is a state of mind, a positive beginning, a first step towards a happier world that is more open to what the future might bring.

Today, this trend of an explosive return to colour can be seen in jewellery with a definite comeback of the technique of enamelling: it can be seen in large fine-jewellery houses like Jaeger le Coutre, Van Cleef & Arpels, whose timepiece Le Pont des amoureux (The Lovers’ Bridge) has just been awarded the Prix de la Montre Dame by the Grand Prix Horloger de Genève, or Piaget, where the art of enamelling lovingly decorates its watch-dials. times. The art of enamel was transformed in the seventeenth century by the new method of miniature painting on enamel. This technique was invented by the French goldsmith Jean Toutin Chateaudun, who was born in 1578. After its beginnings in France, enamel painting was brought to Geneva in the seventeenth century and greatly influenced many of the big watchmaking houses. It lent its fine design and its rich colours to the portraits and scenes that decorated watches, snuff boxes and jewellery. In the gold work and the watches with which it is now closely associated, enamelling has ensured the continuing reputation of the miniature painters who perfected the technique, for all of them decorated watches. It is they, for example, who invented what is known as “enamel under flux” or “Geneva enamel” that was used after 1760; this colourless layer is machine-polished and acts as a protective glaze on the painting, making it possible to dispense with the external watch case. The effects of this technique meant that Geneva enamel painting, with its distinctive appearance, ranked supreme in Europe.

Dominique Baron is the deserved winner of the Prix de la Montre Dame with the Le Pont des amoureux (The Lovers’ Bridge). She was born in the French Jura and has dedicated her life to creation and to the school in Geneva that trains about a dozen students. “The enamelling craftsmen died with their secrets and there are no written documents:

straordinarie gemme, ornate da fermagli, spesso amovibili trasformabili in spille di brillanti. Una pubblicità del 1935 giustifica con qualche slogans la nascita della minaudière : « Le donne non hanno tasche e tanto meno delle tasche utili », «Le loro borse si deformano e si gonfiano disturbando così la perfetta armonia della loro eleganza».

Così la minaudière entra nei codici dell’high society internazionale e cosmopolita delle grandi capitali. S’infilava in una borsa di velluto o di seta nera della stessa forma, che ne lasciava vedere i preziosi dettagli.

Ma ciò che la caratterizzava maggiormente era la sua praticità, utile e ingegnosa la piccola minaudière conteneva tutti gli accessori irrinunciabili per una donna di mondo. All’interno, suddivisa in diversi scomparti, riuscivano a stare, misurati al millimetro, molteplici piccoli accessori: una scatoletta per la cipria, un orologio a scomparsa, un rossetto, un carnet di ballo, un accendino, un paio di occhiali, un porta pillole,…

Ecco perché le minaudière sono anche piccoli oggetti di architettura e certamente di design. In questi piccoli scrigni, espressione di eleganza ma anche di opulenza e lusso, c’è anche un po’ dell’avanguardia estetica del modernismo. In questi oggetti c’è tutta l’arte dei migliori maestri orafi, l’estetica di un’epoca tra le più eleganti ma anche l’espressione di un vento nuovo che comincia a soffiare quello del funzionalismo che darà una nuova interpretazione di tutti gli oggetti del quotidiano. +

The luxury watchmaking industry of the French and Neuchâtel Jura played a crucial role in the late eighteenth century and throughout the nineteenth in supplying the European, eastern and Chinese markets. The horrors of the two World Wars swept this art away and it was essential that passionate people like Dominique were able, with the support of Van Cleef & Arpels, to make the phoenix rise from the ashes. She has structured a three-year training course with several study-programs which include enamel miniature painting and the history of the technique, and all courses have a final practical exam.
