Imagine Rick Pitino — the legendary coach at Kentucky, Louisville and the New York Knicks — leading the Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball team. Does this sound unrealistic? Pitino’s name along with another 20 or so candidates, many with NBA connections, have been floated to FGCU Athletic Director Ken Kavanagh. Through a public records request, Eagle News has learned of a wide-ranging group of candidates who have expressed

interest in replacing Dave Balza. The list includes Pitino, former NBA coach Eric Musselman, former NBA standouts and Division I coaches Kyle Macy and Jan van Breda Kolff, and former Iowa and Butler coach Todd Lickliter. Kavanagh expressed mutual interest in Lickliter, who led Butler to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament twice. Macy, color commentator for University of Kentucky telecasts and former Morehead State head coach, spent seven years in the NBA with the Phoenix Suns, Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers. Before that, Macy was a All-
American member of Kentucky’s 1978 NCAA championship squad. Pitino, who is currently coaching Louisville, didn’t personally express interest in the position. Instead, the endorsement came from Dan Gavitt, associate commissioner for men’s basketball of the Big East conference, to Kavanagh. Pitino may be a stretch since he has a contract with the Cardinals running through 2013 that will pay him $2.5 million per year. Yet his name is out there, at least through a third party.

Monroe was the fourth FGCU student to be killed in a car accident this school year. This past September, freshman Morgan Crofton was killed in a head-on collision in Orlando. Fewer than two weeks later, graduate student Fara Amsalem was killed in a two-car collision in Lehigh Acres. In January, junior Carisa Herald was killed in a one-car crash on Interstate 75 near Tampa.

the document. Some members include Chris Harmon, chair and chief justice; TJ McCan, vice chair; Kim Diaz, SG president; Lauren Schuetz, Senate president, and Danielle Alvarez, SG director of governmental relations. The group has been working all year to make necessary changes to SG’s largest document. According to Harmon, the changes make the document more professional and easier to read, but also improve the organization’s effectiveness. “I am very confident in what we put together, and I am excited to get it passed. I feel this will advance our organization leaps and bounds
if it passes,” Harmon said. But it’s up to students to make the call. The changes need a threefifths majority vote to pass. If that happens, the new document goes into effect April 1. Apportionment is the process of selecting how many representatives are needed for
each college in Senate. “Now when the reapportionment goes into effect, after election season, no one is losing their (Senate) seat halfway through the year,” Harmon said. Currently, the Student Government treasurer is an internally appointed position. If the revised constitution is passed, a SG treasurer will be elected by the student body during election season. The document leaves it open to the Election Code to decide whether treasurer candidates will run independently or with a party.

FGCU’s nightlife seems to be disappearing. On Thursday, Feb. 24, La Bamba, which was best known for its Thursday night specials, was temporarily closed for violations. On Friday, March 11, Ultra Night Club in Naples received a cease-anddesist order due to safety concerns, with violations ranging from fire alarm and sprinkler noncompliance to electrical issues, according to the Naples Daily News. On Monday, Ultra announced on its Facebook page that “after careful consideration, (the owners) have decided not to re-open Ultra for business.” “I have been to Ultra a few times during my years at FGCU, (so) I am sad to see it go considering it’s one of the few large nightclubs in the area,” said Ashley Worden, a senior majoring in sociology. According to Ultra’s Facebook page, the owners are sorry to disappoint their supporters, but are at ease with their decision. “We appreciate all the support for the last four years, it was a great run, and it’s time to be done and relax … . It was incredible to see thousands of people coming together … and saying this was the most fun they’ve ever had at a club in their life! We feel good about the legacy left behind the name, but this city isn’t really cut out for nightlife yet,” the Ultra owners wrote.

Nest Fest Jkl[\ekj gldg XnXp k_\`i gXpZ_\Zbj performer not new to FGCU GAS PRICES
9p M\ife`ZX M\cX JkX]] ni`k\i
The price of gas in the U.S. is about $3.50 a gallon, up by almost 80 cents from a year ago, when the national average was $2.73. The current average is still cheaper than the per-gallon cost in the state of Florida, which is currently $3.57. This puts the Sunshine State at No. 35 for state gas averages on GasBuddy. com’s list of national prices. With prices this high, it’s likely that Southwest Florida tourism is being affected negatively. And residents, including FGCU students, are changing the way they drive. According to WINK News, one business owner in Charlotte County, Fishin’ Frank, says he may lose up to 50 percent of his business due to the cost of gas.
“We’re a big toy store ‌ this is what you want, not what you need, so we’re one of the first to get cut back,â€? Fishin’ Frank said about luxury and leisure businesses such as his bait and tackle shop. With the price of gas so high, many anglers are staying onshore to fish instead of going out on the water by boat. Even worse, the fear of Fishin’ Frank and others whose livelihoods depend on the tourist season is that some visitors will just stay up North. That would impact key local businesses such as hotels and restaurants. While the economic hit on Southwest Florida won’t be determined for months, FGCU students aren’t waiting to change their driving habits to save money. Karen Moscoso, a sophomore majoring in public relations, tries carpooling as an alternative to driving. She says gas prices
affect her most when deciding where to go hang out with friends. “I don’t want to spend that much money because you already spend money when you go out. And sometimes it can affect your relationships because you don’t want to drive all the time, but neither does the other person, Moscoso said. She still tries to keep a positive outlook about the rising costs. “It could also be a pro because it can make you more active by walking or bike riding to other places. It can change someone’s lifestyle, Moscoso said. Sarah Schultz, a senior majoring in elementary education, has no choice but to drive a distance to meet an internship obligation. “Since I have to drive to Bonita Springs two days a week, I am having to purchase more
gasoline to get to and from my internship. I also drive down to Naples on Sundays for church, so by midweek I am already at half a tank or less, Schultz said. Students are reminded that a unique alternative to driving their own vehicles is to check out ride2fgcu.com. This site allows FGCU students, staff and faculty to find others around their area to carpool with.
NEED AN ALTERNATIVE? www.ride2fgcu.com A secure online rideshare matching system designed to assist the FGCU community in finding ridesharing partners for everyday or specific trips.
DINING J\eXk\ ]le[j (),#)*( kf i\mXdg j\Xk`e^ `e e\n ]ff[ Zflik 9p D\^Xe ?ffc`_Xe 8jj`jkXek E\nj \[`kfi Student Senate has passed a bill to fund the renovation of the Perch seating area. Following construction this summer, the current all-you-caneat Perch location will be replaced with a food court offering three dining options. The food court will include Chick-fil-A, Blu Sushi and a small station offering homestyle meals called The Home Zone. The bill stated that the current seating area is not conducive to a food court operation and calls for smaller tables, more lounge areas, wall graphics, televisions and other additions. A bidding process will be conducted to find the best
possible vendors for the design and furniture additions needed to complete the renovation. The total cost of the bill is $125,231. Of that, $106,685 is allotted to the seating renovation, $7,000 is alotted to wall graphics and $3,550 to the cost of repainting the area. The rest of the funds are reserved for the addition of four TVs, cables, plugs, connectors and miscellaneous construction costs. Any unused funds will be swept back into the unallocated account for next year. The new seating area, which will be decorated in FGCU colors, will be one large area with no wall barriers and will be open to all students whenever the Student
Union is open. The elimination of the all-you-can-eat area means there will be no secluded sections in the Perch, and no area of the seating will be restricted to any of the food vendors. The total seating capacity of the proposed layout is 276 people. The current seating for the Perch is between 220 and 230. It was mentioned during the Senate meeting that the seats and tables currently in the Perch may be utilized elsewhere on campus, such as the balcony area on the second floor of the Student Union. The reopening of the Perch seating area will coincide with the fall opening of the food court. Student Government President Kim Diaz stated the reasons for
SG helping to fund this renovation on March 1 at the outdoor Senate meeting. “It is part of a platform. We should show students that this is our initiative and that we can get things done, Diaz said. “This will be a place where people come in and study and lounge whenever they can. “This is a service we’re giving to students. That lounge area is going to be useful for them. Diaz reiterated her support of the renovation at Tuesday’s meeting. “Students really, really need more lounge spaces and students need to see a change. This is a very visible change, she said. The bill passed 28-3 at Tuesday night’s meeting.

STUDENT HOUSING
N\Y i\m`\n f] i\j`[\eZ\j \ejli\j i\ek n\cc jg\ek 9p D\^Xe ?ffc`_Xe 8jj`jkXek E\nj \[`kfi Have you ever logged on to RateMyProfessor.com before signing up for a particular class? Students all over the country benefit from the reviews offered on this site. Why would you be any less thorough when choosing which off-campus housing facility you want to live in? The challenge of finding offcampus housing is something many college students have to deal with. A new website, HousingRevU. com, allows students who are interested in off-campus housing
to find different properties in their area and read the honest opinions and feedback of past residents. The site was founded by Ben Philabaum, a Miami University senior. Philabaum was inspired by the success and convenience of other review sites, such as Yelp and RateMyProfessor.com. Students can share their experiences and educate themselves before committing to a particular residence. During the short walk-through that is typically offered for potential residents, it might be difficult for students to get honest opinions from tenants, particularly with a real estate
agent or property owner present. “I heard too many horror stories from friends who were unhappy with their living situation, Philabaum said. “In the past, the only experience a student had of a property before renting it was a short walk through. Now with HousingRevU, students can read the opinions of any past tenant. The website also offers basic information about the properties, including price, amenities and the condition of the facility. Students can also view photos of different residences in addition to reading the reviews of past tenants.

“Making the treasurer position an elected position ultimately puts the power back in the hands of the students. The treasurer is a position that carries a large responsibility in SG and should be seen as such, Harmon wrote in a Powerpoint presentation to Senate. The universities of Florida, South Florida and West Florida have the same clause in their SG documents. The new document outlines specific procedures for the Supreme Court. “We essentially

The lack of nightlife is a common complaint among FGCU students. Although many new restaurants, bars and clubs have moved in during the past couple of years, students still feel the community is lacking. “I think we need more places for us college students to go because I admit I’m getting a little bored ‌ and I know others who feel the same way with me on this as well,â€? said Gabby Nicotra, a sophomore majoring in public relations. Students who participated in an Eagle News poll that asked, “What do you think about the local nightlife?â€? echoed this stance. The winning answer, at 37 percent, was, “What nightlife?â€? In an effort to help FGCU students enjoy the nightlife we do have, Joey Russo, a junior majoring in political science and history, launched fgcuboozenews.com, a site that includes specials and cover discounts for popular nightlife locations. “I want to make sure the site is something catered toward the students of this university,â€? Russo said. The site, which launched March 15 after about a month of being in the works, currently has Olympia, Voda Lounge, Uptown Larry’s, Bar Louie, Alehouse, Firepit and Blu Sushi specials listed on the website. “For the nightclubs, I’ve contacted them individually and made the business connections. For the bars, I just check up with them in terms of their specials every month. I do make it out every once in a while so when I go, I make sure their specials are correct,â€? Russo said. Russo believes this site is
The site not only serves a valuable purpose for students, but can also be a resource for real estate agents, who can use the site to connect with students who are seeking living arrangements. “I believe property owners will get excited about the platform because well-reviewed properties will become much more in demand once students see all the positive feedback, Philabaum said. Philabaum also says that property owners unaware of problems with their facility can learn about them on the site, resolve them and post a response. Sandy McNall, a senior
majoring in business, thinks that the website is an excellent resource. “It is a really big decision to choose where you want to live while you are attending college; I know I have had some horrible experiences as a resident. Students rely on RateMyProfessor so much ... it is a great idea to apply the same concept to reviewing housing facilities, McNall said. FGCU currently does not have any properties listed on the site. Students can go to HousingRevU. com to list and rate their current residence for other potential tenants to view.
gave the Supreme Court a direct vision and a direct purpose. This gives us the jurisdiction to mandate. It is explicitly stated what we do, Harmon said. Many other changes included are aesthetic: an SG logo, uniform technology and the addition of a preamble and a purpose. The constitution will not have to be revisited for another five years if students pass the proposed version. The amendments to the constitution were passed in Senate in February. The committee has worked with Michele Yovanovich, dean of students, along with the
general counsel and other Florida universities throughout the process. Schuetz, Diaz and Yovanovich have signed the revised constitution. Voting begins Tuesday, March 22 in the Student Union Ballroom. All students who come out to vote receive a “get out of jail free card, which can be used in place of paying a parking ticket on campus.
just another step to giving our community a college feel. “When you go to other universities, you have bars and clubs within a couple miles of the university. It’s part of the atmosphere and culture of a college town,â€? he said. University of Central Florida, University of South Florida and Florida State University have Booze News websites as well. Russo and Tyler Salem, who runs the other websites and is assisting Russo with the FGCU one, want to “keep it uniformâ€? between the universities for name recognition and to ensure the students receive the same service. “This is more service-based; more direct. You see exactly what you want to see and nothing else,â€? Russo said. “It’s also free advertising for (the businesses listed).â€? Tiffany Massey, a nursing major who already “likedâ€? the site on Facebook, plans on using the site to help plan her nights. “I love that it gives the prices on cover and what some of the restaurants are doing ‌ I think FGCU students will greatly benefit from it to help them save money and (it’s) something that will help new students meet others,â€? she said. Although two clubs are now closed, FGCU students shouldn’t give up on the nightlife opportunities we still have.

You hear it from graduates and it’s the truth: College years fly by. The next thing you know, you’ll be walking across the stage shaking hands with the president after he hands you your college diploma. 9p :Xifc JZ_e\`[\i :feki`Ylk`e^ ni`k\i Eating healthy is frequently related to boring and flavorless food. To think of a mouth-watering, tasty meal is to picture a pizza, a burger, pasta or french fries. However, having a succulent meal is not always equal to being unhealthy; there are many options of main dishes that can be easily cooked at home and are both healthy and tasty. Here are some tips to create great tasting meals that provide all the good stuff your body needs.
=`j_# Z_`Zb\e Xe[ Y\\] Great and healthy options when cooking a main dish are baked fish, grilled chicken or steak, eggplant lasagna, baked potatoes, brown rice, or whole wheat pasta with fresh vegetables. There are many ways that these plates can result in high calories, fat, cholesterol and sodium, so here are some tips to avoid gaining unnecessary weight when eating them. Frying meats: Opt for olive oil or natural cooking sprays instead of vegetable oil or butter. Another good option is to marinade the meat with citrus flavors such as lime, lemon or orange. Cooking vegetables: It is better to choose fresh instead of frozen, and to steam them instead of frying. Spices: Fresh herbs, leaves and peppers are healthier options than salt or the powdered and artificial flavors. Baking: Try a meat with potatoes combined with tomatoes and onions; add olive oil so it doesn’t get dried and spices and leaves on top to boost the flavor. Remember that healthy meals must contain fiber (fruits and vegetables), protein (meats) and carbohydrates (rice, pasta, potatoes).

To start off, an excellent option is a mixed salad. Depending on your personal tastes, you can create a salad that will meet your expectations. Many people think of salad as a tasteless and boring meal, but there is no way of getting it wrong with this one. All you need is a bowl, your favorite meat, veggies, fruits and dressing. As a first step to start the salad, it is necessary to have some leafy vegetable such as lettuce, spinach, arugula, cabbage or any green leaf desired (it’s even better when a variety of leaves is combined). Secondly, it is important to select a healthy protein such as a fish, chicken, turkey, tuna or beef. It is always recommended to have the meat baked, grilled or roasted instead of fried. If you’re in a hurry or too busy to cook meats that require a long period of time to prepare, choose fillets of chicken, fish or steak. These can be quickly done in a pan or a grill, and all you need is olive oil or a vegetable oil spray. For a more flavorful meat, add spices such as pepper, garlic, onions, lemon or herbs. The next step is to choose some vegetables; it can be anything from broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, tomatoes, to zucchini, yellow squash, sprouts, corn, or any other veggie of your liking. There is no right amount when it comes to vegetables; they all provide different vitamins and nutrients, meaning the more the better. After adding your veggies, an excellent option is to mix fresh (not canned) fruits such as berries, grapes or pineapples. Fruits add the sweetness and make a complete difference in the salad. Then, if you would like to add a carbohydrate, options are brown rice, baked potatoes or whole wheat pasta. (Remember that in the evening it is better to exclude heavy carbs). Finally, to complete the salad, you will add the dressing and toppings that are good for you and will provide more flavor to the dish. Note: The dressing is what usually turns a light salad from healthy to a fatty meal when not correctly chosen. Opt for olive oil, balsamic vinegar, lemon or a dressing low in fat and sodium (Caesar and ranch among the least healthy options). As for the toppings, they can also be tricky. Choose roasted nuts such as almonds or water chestnuts, whole grain croutons or crackers. The last step is to cut and mix all the ingredients in a large bowl and enjoy your piece of paradise without any feeling of guilt.

TREND ALERT: FLORAL DENIM 9p BXpcX Jk`iq\c J\e`fi jkX]] ni`k\i The 1990s grunge look is coming back into our closets with one of the newest trends to be revived: floral denim. The designed denim look can be found in shorts, skirts, jeans or even dresses. This type of floral is not like the kind Elaine from “Seinfeld wore or like the type of floral dresses your mother dressed you in for outings, but this floral fashion offers an altered look for denim by steering away from the traditional blue or bleached styles. The floral denim should be the funkiest part of the outfit. If you wear a solid color top, it will allow the floral to be the focal point. Cropped tops are great to wear with floral denim shorts; they offer a more revealing, sexy look. Floral denim dresses can be pulled off for a day or a night look depending on your shoes. Wear whimsy sandals for a day look and hot heels for night. Floral denim skinny jeans look best with ankle boots or flats. If you want to go for a more risky look with the floral, double up on patterns by wearing a striped top. You no longer have search at vintage or thrift shops to find this style, either, thanks to stores such as Forever 21 at Coastland Center, Naples.

Bad sex: When ‘ooh!’ goes to ‘oh ...’ 9p JXiX >fkknXcc\j Fg`e`fe \[`kfi “Real life isn’t like the movies. People don’t just randomly scream out the wrong name during sex,” says my best guy friend. I disagree. It happens. This, and worse offenses infiltrate our bedroom experiences, making the “oh” go from eye-crossing good, to the realization that this is Thursday, not Friday. While it is obvious that different people are into different things, the qualifications for bad sex are surprisingly uniformed. Across the board, the following faux pas during sexy time were agreed upon by at least two guys and/or girls. Even if you’re just having a fling, communication should still play a role in your romp. Do not repeatedly ask “do you like that?” Eventually the poor receiver is going to tell you the embarrassing truth that if you exerted as much energy into the sex as you do asking a ridiculous question over and over, it just may be tolerable. They want you to shut the hell up. Less lip, more dip. Unless you’re really hitting fouls. Then they want you to just fall asleep. By the same token, do not ask a girl “do you like that beach” (but the real question, not the cutie teenie bobber version) unless you know it will turn her on. Even still, don’t say it once every 30 seconds for 50 reps. Bad sex is miserable enough without making it into a triathlon of terrors to be retold. Remember that sex is a give-and-take. If you give someone a slap in the face when they are not into roughness, you need to be prepared to take the repercussions. If you’re a guy trying to be tough and mistreat the person you are with, remember, teeth and genitals are not supposed to mix. But some people seek vengeance. Some horror stories evolve from personal styles or choices of one of the participants. Guys, there is no nice way to say this. Jackhammering is awful. It’s not pleasurable at all. Girls need a slower thrust to tantalize our vaginal nerve endings. Just because it
BAD SEX
feels good to you, and we’re not kicking you off, doesn’t mean we are into it. Please learn the signs. What are her facial expressions? Is there any, um … natural lubrication? If not, stop. If a girl finds tears on her vagina, you just attended your last rodeo in that corral. Sometimes buzzed sex with someone you trust can be an adventure. If you are too drunk, however, several scenarios of undesirable proportion may occur. Falling asleep is sort of a damper, especially if you are on top. If you are the larger party, it can be embarrassing and potentially relationship- and back-wrecking. Drunk sex as a rule usually results in bad sex as it leads to poor choices. No one wants to fall asleep as a single being and wake up as two. Condoms usually are not the top priority of inebriated intercourse. Other issues may be physiological. While I am sympathetic to your problem, if you sweat like Shaquille O’Neal at the foul line, you should not participate in any bedroom frolicking that will make you into a human fire hydrant. Also, this may sound cruel, but no one wants to have someone die on them during sex. If you wheeze and are not fit enough to have intercourse, you should refrain from heavy physical positions. Living quarters should be taken into account as well. Give your roomies a heads up so they can vacate the premises if necessary. It’s hard to concentrate when a sibling is knocking on the wall, or if grandma pops in to let you know someone just died. True stories. Miscellaneous tips to keep in mind are no unhuman noises, missionary-style sex on the floor resulting in a back rug burn, trying something off the beaten path without asking if they’re down, or finishing first and leaving the other person hanging. Sex is not going to always follow the plot of an erotic novel. There will be awkward moments, someone will kick someone else in the face, and someone will be laughed at in the morning by a roommate. It’s all part of the experience. The fairytale endings will be far and few between — giving cause to appreciate them more.
Irish eyes are smiling, not glazed over 9p :_\c =i\\dXe JkX]] ni`k\i Let’s get one thing out of the way right now: Green beer is a sin. It’s a unicorn as far as beer goes; it simply doesn’t exist. Adding green food coloring to pancakes on St. Patrick’s Day morning is festive. Adding it to watered-down domestic beer is an abomination. I’m sure that some well-meaning soul decided to combine the green of the rolling hills of the motherland with the amazing nectar that is beer. However, only light-colored domestic beers seem to turn green, and this is where the mutation begins. If you think the point of St. Pat’s Day is to get hammered off any beer regardless of color, you deserve your hangover. Beyond an excuse to party, we commemorate this day each year thanks to the Catholics who honor the anniversary of St. Patrick’s death. He is credited with converting the pagans to Christianity after having been an English slave in Ireland before his decision to join the priesthood. It’s a myth that St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. There were never any snakes in Ireland to begin with (they can take some of Florida’s off our hands). Serpents are often used to represent evil in literature, which is where this idea is thought to have come from. Being Irish Catholic myself, I can tell you that it’s not only beer and the wearing of green that signify the day. Corned beef, cabbage and potatoes are a must. This constitutes the official meal of the holiday. It’s all incredibly easy to prepare. In fact my first time around in college, I specifically went out and bought a stock pot so that I wouldn’t miss out on the tradition. It’s important to mention that I existed on a diet of anything quick and easy out of a box during that period. A slice of sweet, Irish soda bread (depending on the region it comes from) is the perfect way to end supper. Of course, if you can’t or don’t want to make it
yourself, your local pub is sure to have it all on tap. Be warned that an Irish joint of St. Paddy’s is going to be packed with amateurs, but if there’s music and company, it’s better than nothing. Before you hit the pub, put these in your pocket. First, in Italian we say “salud,” in English we say “cheers,” but in Gaelic we toast with “slainte” (pronounced slan-cheh). You’ll hear a lot of “Erin go braugh” being said, meaning “Ireland forever.” Irish blessings are a dime a dozen, but a funny one to have on hand is, “May the cat eat you and may the devil eat the cat!” This is basically a wish of karma upon anyone who hurts you. Back to what you’re really interested in. You’re at the bar, it’s your turn to order and you don’t want to look like a popped-collar-wearingfool. What to order? The obvious and safe choice is a Guinness, but this black stout is like drinking a loaf of bread and isn’t for everyone. If you like espresso, you’ll enjoy dark beers in this family. Next in line from stouts are the caramel-like red ales, such as Smithwick’s or Killian’s Irish Red. Tend to drink Budweiser? Try Harp instead. For the non-beer drinker, Magner’s Cider tastes more like grown-up apple juice than anything else. The Celtic Ray in Punta Gorda is my top recommendation for the Irish experience, but make sure you have a D.D. or plans to stay the night (You want to live to see the Chicago River dyed green one year; it’s an annual event that sounds pretty damn festive.) For directions or event info, call (941) 916-9115. Remember, this is the one day it is politically correct to discuss leprechauns. Use it wisely.

Gaelic gab: Drink less and be merry, say two opinion leprechauns 9p :_\cj\X J\\c\p Xe[ IXj_X` C\\ JkX]] ni`k\ij On the cusp of St. Patrick’s Day, two opinion writers lament what the holiday has become in the U.S. Rashai Lee supports equality and civil rights. Chelsea Seeley is about 75 percent Irish and very proud of her heritage. CS: First off, St. Patrick’s Day is supposed to be a religious holiday, and the whole idea of drinking goes against that. It’s the celebration of a saint that the Irish loved, and the drinking doesn’t fit in. If you want to drink to celebrate, go ahead, but holidays shouldn’t be about drinking. RL: Drinking is not a form of religion. St. Partick’s Day is basically losing its meaning. CS: In my research, I found that St Patrick’s Day is actually more celebrated here than it is in Ireland itself. RL: It’s celebrated by the Irish by parades. They wear green, they sing songs, and have games for the children. CS: I got my info from the History Channel. It said the day was celebrated in 1762 in the U.S., and it basically started the bigger celebration before Ireland could even get a chance to begin its celebrations. RL: The purpose of St Patrick’s Day was to help the soldiers reconnect with their Irish roots in NYC when they started celebrating here in the states. CS: We’re celebrating something that the Irish aren’t. They’re celebrating the loss of their saint, and we’re celebrating our heritage. I mean, I just found out that I still have family in Ireland. I didn’t know more about my heritage until I started looking. I feel like I should be able to celebrate it from the aspect of who we really are and from the Irish perspective. RL: Coming from someone who is not Irish, I believe that we as Americans need to understand Irish history before we celebrate a holiday we know nothing about.
CS: And our problem is we think we know about the Irish. Americans think that we come with a temper and a drinking problem, and they stereotype on the freckles and the red hair rather than understanding our personalities and where we come from. RL: And when we stereotype, we put people into categories they don’t belong in, and our opinions become unjustified. CS: I wish that people would have more of an interest to learn about not just Irish heritage, but other cultures that we stereotype as well. It’s the same way with the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead. Americans put the Mexican people under stereotypes as they do the Irish. I wish people would be open to other cultures to learn more about them. I think it would be cool if we offered a Celtic language class here at FGCU. RL: I want to see more celebration than drinking; you can celebrate and not drink. You don’t have to get drunk to be happy. Apparently, being educated on the meaning of a holiday changes the context of the celebration. Rashai is a freshman, majoring in communication. Westboro hatred judged tolerable by America’s highest court 9p DXe[`\ IX`enXk\i JkX]] ni`k\i I hate Westboro Baptist Church. I hate Al-Qaida. I hate the Ku Klux Klan. I hate Nazis. I am an Atheist. I live in sin. I think Wiccans are cool. I don’t agree with many Muslim beliefs, but I don’t agree with many Christian, Jewish or Mormon beliefs either. I can go on and on and on. Why? I am an American and I was given the right to speak my mind and choose my own spiritual path by the First Amendment. You don’t have to like it — or me, for that matter, but you should respect my decisions, just as I respect yours. But, lately that has not been the case. For example, Westboro Baptist Church is an abomination, giving Christianity a bad name. To protest at the funerals of our country’s fallen heroes is one of the worst judgment calls in the history of bad judgment, but like me, they are protected. The Supreme Court decided earlier this month that the First Amendment rights of the fanatical group had to be upheld with an 8-1 vote. The court didn’t condone the message of the so-called church, but ruled that even words of bad taste are protected. As much as I hate what Westboro does, I have to agree with the court decision. If we censored them, who would be next? Westboro is not the first group to face mainstream dislike; they keep company with the KKK, Neo-Nazis and other hate groups. Religion and politics are not immune to censorship or attempts at eradication, either. History is rampant with powerful people condemning those they don’t understand. The Salem Witch Trials never uncovered a real witch. The McCarthy hearings created a climate of fear in the 1950s against communism, and many people were found guilty by the public simply by being accused. In the 1980s law enforcement focused on devil worship, occults, and rock music brainwashing the minds of the youth when played backward. Today, Tennessee wants to outlaw Sharia law, the codes many Muslims follow that dictate everything including diets, holiday observances and treatment of women, children and the poor. Many Americans are ignorant of the laws or customs that make up Sharia, but what gives anyone the right to say it can’t be practiced? They, too, are protected under the First
Amendment, just as the right for the Islamic community to construct buildings in which to congregate. Tennessee is not alone in this modern-day witchhunt. Representative Peter King, R-N.Y., has convened trials, under his authority as the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, to talk about how mosques radicalize Muslims and transform them to terrorists. He pays little attention to such statistics as there have been 80 plots against the U.S. since 9/11 that have been developed domestically by non-Muslims, as compared to 45 domestic and foreign plots by Muslims, according to a report released in January from the Muslim Public Affairs Council. This report goes on to show that 37 percent of plots have been foiled with the help of Muslim-Americans since 2001, and increased in 2009 to 75 percent, which illustrates they are already acting upon what Rep. King is publicly accusing them of not doing— protecting the country they call home from would-be attackers. America is unique in the world. Her people are free to argue; we spend our years here at FGCU learning how to form rhetoric skills. We are free to worship, change our minds, speak our minds, learn, grow, stagnate, and hold our opinions close to our heart. We don’t have to agree with one another. In Utopia, we would all get along and see things the same way, but until then, we have the Bill of Rights, giving us the right to use and state our minds. Half of the Middle East is fighting for just an inkling of what we take for granted — the right to be individuals, the right to choose and the right to be. Only from the discourse that arises from disagreements will we learn the errors of our ways. So, let the protesters scream and the ignorant spew pestilence. The more they make asses of themselves, the more people will realize why they don’t want to be like them and join all of us here in the center, where things are calm and we all just get along. Planning board announces disappointing Nest Fest 9p EXk\ >Xd\i :fdglk\i @e]fidXk`fe Jpjk\dj# j\e`fi I am beyond upset at this year’s band selections for Nest Fest. Every year, I look forward to the announcement, and I have been disappointed half of the time I have been at Florida Gulf Coast University. I wrote explaining my disappointment about our programming board’s selection of Panic! at the Disco two years ago, and am writing again to show my disappointment as a graduating senior. First, 3oh!3 is by no stretch of the imagination a rock band. When looking at their videos, I did not see any type of instruments being played. I would not have been upset seeing them at Eaglepalooza, because I feel they would be put in the same genre category as LMFAO. They are by no means considered rock or even any sub genre of rock in my books. Second, I was very surprised that the programming board is welcoming Jack’s Mannequin back with open arms. When thinking back to my first Nest Fest experience, I remember there being technical difficulties, and every band stuck around and talked to us as we eagerly waited in line. Jack’s Mannequin was the first to rudely leave their fans without a simple wave to the crowd. Nest Fest was cancelled that year, and I blame Jack’s Mannequin for not being patient with our delay. No other concert organization would ever let a band back to their event after screwing them even once. In general, I was looking forward to having the “college rock” vibe that went over so well last year. Taking Back Sunday and The Maine, I will admit, are rock bands, but they appeal to a younger demographic. Last time I checked, our school was not filled with screaming middle school girls. When researching The Maine, I came across an interview being conducted by blaremagazine. com. I found that The Maine’s answers to the questions were very unsatisfying. “Do you think your band would be as successful as it is today if it didn’t appeal to such a younger female crowd? Probably not. But I think with the new record we will be able to have a broader audience.
It’s no secret, The Maine’s fan base is spearheaded by banshee-screaming teenage girls clad in neon clothing. Did you ever think your band would have such a cult following? I hoped we would. It is mind blowing to see how many people give us their support! What separates The Maine from artists like the Jonas Brothers and Justin Bieber who have similar audiences? Four out of five of us play instruments live. Although we are kind of like Justin’s big brother.” This band admits outright that they are not trying to appeal to the college demographic. Responses from my last message two years ago included, “You do not know what it takes to put an event like this together,” or, “You are welcome to come to our meetings.” I am close with someone who helped plan an event for an organization with 30 bands and half a million patrons attending. I was well informed of what it takes for bands to perform, including pricing and the overall process. I know how hard it is to please everyone, but there is a difference between trying to appeal to the greater population rather than personal choices. With the second response, I feel that I am not welcomed to meetings by the way I am treated with the majority of the Programming Board. Even when voicing my opinion on a Facebook board, I was referred to as a “geed” and my post was deleted. Unfortunately, I feel the problem is that because I am not part of any fraternity or sorority, my opinion does not matter. I believe there was little effort to go outside of that circle to get a collective opinion. As a senior, I was hoping to end my Nest Fest experiences on a high, but I will be sitting this one out. With prices being raised for students, I do not even think I can afford to give the concert the benefit of the doubt. If the prices are $2 extra this year, I am expecting better bands. I hope Nest Fest will bring in their goal amount of 4,935 students like last year, with Slightly Stoopid and Pepper, but I have a feeling that they will be bringing in closer to 2,900 students that attended New Found Glory and Panic! at the Disco two years ago.

What we haven’t done very well so far is been consistent.” The Eagles are 12-15 with the A-Sun opener against Campbell on March 26 coming up. Deiros feels his team has plenty of offense, defense and chemistry. Yet getting all three of those on the same game day has been a problem for the Eagles. “We have shown a lot of chemistry, offense and defense so far,” Deiros said. “But they’ve been independent of each other and come in spurts. We need to have those things every day because we will be tested a lot with our schedule from here on in. That’s one of the reasons we play all the Big 10 and Pac 10 schools, so we can prepare ourselves for tough competition.” The Eagles went 3-2 last weekend in the Diamond Devil Tournament in Tempe, Ariz., beating Howard, Creighton and Weber State and falling to Virginia

become one of the A-Sun’s greatest new sluggers and leads FGCU in several offensive categories, including home runs, RBI and slugging percentage. She is third on the team in on-base percentage. Senior pitcher Catherine McDaniel could use some of Garabedian’s support. McDaniel has posted a 1.80 ERA through 70 innings pitched. She’s given up only 18 earned runs while striking out 42 and walking only 12. McDaniel has also been a regular on the A-Sun Academic Team. Left-fielder Courtney Platt leads the team with a .308 batting average and center-fielder Jessica Barnes is tops in RBI with 15. “She has been an outstanding pitcher, but her won-loss record may not reflect that,” Deiros said of McDaniel. “Especially considering the great schools she’s pitched against. Her curveball and dropball have been great. She has command of her pitches and has a lot of mental toughness, in that she’s able to bounce back from bad pitches and go on.” McDaniel and Garabedian were the impetus in FGCU’s main bright spot this season, a victory in the FGCU Tournament two weeks ago. After the game against Purdue, the Eagles head to The Game Tournament at the University of South Florida, meeting Winthrop, Dartmouth, Oklahoma State, Quinnipiac and Kent State. After that, 20 of FGCU’s final 22 games will be in the A-Sun.

Bechtel, a sophomore, is at the top of her game right now with an 8-3 record in singles play this spring season, the most wins on the team so far. As a walk-on freshman for the Eagles, she led the team with 13 singles victories and only five losses overall, and went 9-1 in conference play. This past Saturday, coach Jennifer Gabou gave Bechtel her first shot at playing No. 1 singles against conference opponent Mercer, moving her up from No. 2 singles. One of the motivators behind the decision was Bechtel’s desire to win. “Morgan has an incredible story,” Gabou said. “She started on the team last year as a walk-on and
her goal was to play No. 6 (singles). Little did we know that in less than a year, one season later she would be 8-3 and playing No. 1. My reasoning for that is because she has such an amazing desire and fire to compete, and we knew she would be a great example for the rest of the team.” Bechtel feels that one of the reasons she has been so successful to this point is her fighting mentality. “I’ve been really fighting out there for every point,” Bechtel said. “I just don’t let anyone get past me. I think some girls just break down when I do that, so I think that’s why I’ve been so consistent.” Bechtel acquired her fighting demeanor from her father Rick, a former Division 1 tennis player. “I think it (Bechtel’s competitive nature) has a lot to do with her upbringing,” Gabou said. “Her father was a Division I tennis player, and she’s seen that growing up her whole life— what it takes to really fight,” Gabou said.
One match in which Bechtel’s fighting mentality really showed this season came earlier this spring. Bechtel, a native of Toledo, Ohio, played against her hometown Toledo Rockets when they came to FGCU for a non-conference match. Bechtel managed to pull off a victory at No. 2 singles. “That was amazing,” Bechtel said. “The coach (for Toledo) didn’t even recruit me to play there. Then I beat their No. 2 singles player 7-5, 6-2. So I pretty much crushed her.” Bechtel’s goal for the remainder of this season is to continue winning. “I’d like to maintain a winning record,” Bechtel said. “I know that it’s going to be tough at No. 1 singles, but I need to just keep improving and hopefully get some big wins.” Right now Bechtel is 0-2 at No. 1 singles, but if her mentality as a fighter is any indication, she won’t be down for long, and will soon get back to her winning form.

Tip-off is set for 7:05. The Eagles finished the regular season last week 27-3 after winning the Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Classic. The three wins extended FGCU’s home winning streak to 41. That’s currently the third longest home streak in the nation behind the University of Connecticut and Stanford University. As of last week, FGCU is ranked No. 8 in CollegeInsider. com Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 Poll. The Eagles are the lone
representative from the Atlantic Sun Conference and lead the nation in three-pointers made per game with 11. Gearing up for their fourthstraight WNIT appearance had been tough until the first round announcements late Monday night. The Eagles focused on sharpening up plays, both offensively and defensively, as much as possible. “It’s been hard,” junior guard Eglah Griffin said. “Playing against each other is kind of hard when we know our plays, but hopefully it helps.” Senior guard Shannon Murphy said it’s not the most fun time because there aren’t games to look forward to, but it was important to take the time to hone their individual skills.
Coach Karl Smesko, now knowing the opponent, is able to create a game plan to center practices around. As of Monday night, Smesko didn’t know much about the Dragons, but he and his staff went straight to work locating film after the announcement party at Beef O’Brady’s. The Dragons were on a fourgame winning streak headed into the Colonial Athletic Association quarterfinals, but it was snapped by University of North CarolinaWilmington. Drexel finished the regular season 18-12 overall and was 5-8 on the road, meaning the sixth man will be just as important as it has been all year. The Eagles are grateful for the home stand not only for the support, but because it is a great
opportunity to host another WNIT game. “I think it’s a huge advantage,” Murphy said. “Our fans have been supporting us all year, so it’s great to give them another game.” This year, the FGCU women’s team has averaged roughly 1,750 fans per game, almost 500 more than last year. The Eagles won the NCAA Division I “Pack the House” challenge early this season with a record crowd of 2,921 watching FGCU top East Tennessee State University on Feb. 7. The Eagles’ record dropped to 2-11 (0-5 Atlantic Sun) after falling to Samford University (10-3) 7-0 on Monday afternoon. Right now, the FGCU men’s tennis team is missing junior Jackson Moore, who is out for the year with a serious injury to his knee. Sophomore Gabriel Echeverry, who had recently taken over the No. 1 singles spot, is also out with an injury to his hand and will most likely be out for the rest of the season. Even though the Eagles are not at full strength, none of them are ready to call it quits. “Right now it’s all about getting everybody healthy,” coach J. Webb Horton said. “We’ll see if we can get some people healthy and try to turn things around when we play Belmont Thursday.” Horton has been forced to shuffle his lineup due to the injuries. Some players have had to switch from playing doubles matches to singles matches. Other players have had to quickly adapt to the playing style of a new doubles partner. “I’ve had three different doubles partners and we’re just switching everything up to see who works well together and
we have been switching things up in the singles lineup as well,” sophomore Collin Brown said. The Eagles are still competing, even with the odds stacked against them. “It’s not like our players aren’t giving us an effort, and it’s disappointing from a coach’s standpoint,” Horton said. “Winning is not for coaches. It’s for the players and what I like is our resiliency. No one has their head down and no one is complaining. Everyone is competing out there.” Brown says the Eagles need to learn how to win. “We need to work on closing out matches,” Brown said. “We’re close (to winning consistently) with what we got and it’s surprising. We wonder what we could do with our full lineup.” Brown played both singles and doubles against Samford and is expecting to do the same against Belmont University (0-6) on Thursday. The Eagles are more than confident that will get the win on Thursday against the Belmont Bruins. “It’s going to be a light day of practice before the game on Thursday so we can relax and rest up to play,” Horton said. “We’re confident that were going to do well against this team,” Brown said.
