L’pool Police officers keeping an eye out for overweight trucks By RUSS TARBY CONTRIBUTING WRITER “What a difference,” exclaimed Liverpool Police Chief Jerry Unger last week. The difference he noticed is a significant decrease of truck traffic in the village. In his third full year as chief, Unger thinks that tractor-trailer traffic here has been reduced by as much as 85 percent since a

new local law went into effect last month banning vehicles weighing more than five tons. And, “knock on wood,” the chief added, the number of Onondaga Lake Parkway bridge strikes is also down. During the last week of January at least three trucks had been cited, but by Feb. 7, Unger said, “We’ve written at least 10 tickets total.” Truckers l Page 2

adopts increased Marina revamp planned LCSD tax exemptions County mulls spending $13.7m to repair retaining wall, expand docks BY RUSS TARBY CONTRIBUTING WRITER

The Onondaga Lake Park Marina is more than 90 years old, and it’s not aging gracefully. Its existing retaining wall is deteriorating daily. Sections of the wall have heaved and buckled as a result of typical weathering over nearly a century. “That wall needs to be replaced before it falls in,” said 4th District County Legislator Colleen Gunnip. “Repairs and replacements are required at this time,” states a request for funding submitted to County Executive Ryan McMahon by the Onondaga County Parks and Recreation Department. McMahon is proposing the county legislature approve a $13.7 million rehabilitation project to renovate the marina, which is located in Liverpool. The Onondaga Lake Marina Expansion and Rehabilitation project would expand marina dockage and add 25 docks specifically for short-term use. It would repair the retaining wall, add fueling stations, expand parking and utility enhancements such as shore power and lighting that will largely benefit the boating community. Parks and recreation has already engaged the services of an engineering firm to produce the design for the retaining wall repairs and replacements. “This is more of a renovation project because the marina will still have the same footprint,” said Legislator Gunnip who pointed to several other

The additional slips can be used for boaters to tie up for the day and visit the park or walk into the village for lunch.” Indeed, the multi-million-dollar project is believed to be a boon to the village. “This project would have a positive impact on the village of Liverpool’s local economy,” said Liverpool Chamber of Commerce Director Lucretia Hudzinski. “We are seeking letters of support

from members of the community and local businesses.” County Parks Commissioner Brian Kelley attended a session with the County Legislature on Feb 6, “And the marina passed unanimously,” he said. “The marina was built in 1933, and this is the first major rehabilitation project that has been done since then,” Kelley added. “We have added docks and such [at times], but this is the first major infrastructure project since its inception. We’re very excited about this.” Construction may start in the fall and could be completed by the spring of 2025, so there would be little disruption to boaters. The marina is currently at full capacity.
