Town board shares Cazenovia Earth Day schedule, Caz Youth Space idea presented

During the March 11 Cazenovia Town Board meeting, Councilor Jimmy Golub announced that several local organizations have organized a weekend of free events leading up to Earth Day on Monday, April 22.

On Friday, April 19, at 10 a.m., the Cazenovia Garden Club will be cleaning up the Route 20 rest stop at the south end of Cazenovia Lake.

On Saturday, April 20, at 9 a.m., the Village of Cazenovia Tree Commission will plant two trees on Mill Street at the corner of Riverside Drive to commemorate the work of Bob and Bobbi Constable. The National Arbor Day proclamation will be read, and the names of past tree donors will be shared.

At 10 a.m., Cazenovia area Scout troops will gather in the Buyea’s True Value parking lot to organize into groups for a Chittenango Creek clean-up.

At the same time, horticulturist Patty Stimmel from Cornell Cooperative Extension Madison County

will present a “Native Plants and Pollinators” workshop at the New Woodstock Free Library.

At 2 p.m., Pat Carmeli will be at the Cazenovia Public Library to discuss how she built her home and interiors using salvaged materials from historic homes, encouraging sustainability and reuse. Her presentation, titled “The New Old House,” is presented by Cazenovia Heritage.

An electric vehicle show is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sunday, April 21, at Lakeland Park. The Cazenovia Lake Association (CLA) will also have the lake’s new, custom-built electrofishing boat at the park for public viewing during the electric vehicle show.

The electric vehicles will then be paraded through the village with a Cazenovia Police Department escort to the American Legion on Chenango Street for the Earth Day Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sponsored by the United Climate Action Network, the fair will feature 24 exhibitors and vendors, an up-cycle/repurpose “Trash to Treasure” competition, informational presentations, and a Viet-

namese food truck. The electric vehicles will also be parked outside the building for viewing and guest rides.

The Earth Day Fair schedule is available at unitedclimateaction. org/cazenovia-earth-day-weekend/.

Caz youth Space proposal

During the town board meeting’s second public comment period, Cazenovia resident Jennifer Marotto Lutter presented her idea for a “Caz Youth Space.”

Lutter, who is a professional planner and the former executive director of the Partnership for Community Development in Hamilton, proposed that the Town of Cazenovia consider launching a youth space modeled after the Town Shop Youth Center in downtown Camillus.

She explained that Town Shop has been in operation since 1971 and serves youths ages 13-19 with programming in the following areas: open building hours after school and on weekends, adventures in nature and culture, selfless service, creative expression, and Youth space l Page 15

“We’re committed to sustaining our

and preserving our identity,” said Superintendent Christopher DiFulvio. “We’re examining every line of the proposed budget to be fiscally responsible while prioritizing core academics and preserving special education services and support.”

The district explored three tiers of spending reductions, with each tier indicating minimal, moderate, and significant impacts on student achievement.

Board members acknowledged the severe shortcomings of the governor’s proposal and discussed possible advocacy measures to inform their local representatives of the severity of the district’s fiscal outlook.

As a next step, the district is inviting its community members, including students and parents, faculty and staff, and those who may not be directly affiliated with the school, to a community conversation to be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, in the high school’s Buckley Gym.

An RSVP is encouraged, and walk-ins are welcome. RSVP by email eayres@caz.cnyric.or g or call 315-655-1317.

“The evening will begin with some options the district is presenting to the board of education to balance the budget, and then we’ll ask attendees to weigh in on what matters most when it comes to the educational experience at Caz,” added DiFulvio. Various options that will be presented could include reducing staff and programming, using budget reserves, and/or piercing the allowable tax levy limit.

“The district has already looked for ways to reduce spending and be creative in preserving its extracurricular opportunities for students, such as by combining sports with neighboring districts when it made sense,” DiFulvio said. “Decisions like that have helped Cazenovia avoid cutting benefits to its students’ experiences; however, the governor’s budget proposal makes it harder to continue to be creative.”

Board members expressed that they would like community input on the options before them so they are making decisions that best align with the community’s values and expectations.

The district plans to make a survey available after the March 20 event for those who are unable to attend but are interested in sharing their thoughts on the options.

“There are no easy choices, and it’s imperative we hear from the community how they feel about the options before us,” said Board President JoAnne Race.

“While we didn’t create this problem, we recognize that it’s our responsibility to [approach the budget] in a way that aligns with the district’s mission, vision and goals.”

Cazenovia Public Library to present inclusive theater program

This spring, the Cazenovia Public Library (CPL) is partnering with theater artist, director, and author Barbara Gregson and musician Eric Porter to present “Mime, Myth and Masks,” a free theater program for adults of all skill levels.

Gregson and Porter will be CPL’s artists in residence from March 22 through June 1. The pair works with people of all ages and abilities to create original shows featuring mime, improvisation, storytelling, masks, and live music.

On Friday, March 22, from 12:45 to 2:45 p.m., the pair will present an introductory theater and mask-mak-

ing workshop for adults ages 18 and up in the CPL Community Room.

Registration for the workshop is now open. Sign up by visiting the CPL website calendar at cazenoviapubliclibrary.org, calling 315-6559322, stopping by the circulation desk, or emailing CPL Adult Programming and Service Coordinator Renee Joseph at rjospeh@midyork. org. The artists will provide insight into their collaborative creative process and talk about how the attendees can get involved in their upcoming local theater production.

Gregson said she and Porter plan to involve everyone in some of their basic warm-ups and mime techniques, and she intends to discuss her

mask-making process, show some of her creations, and demonstrate how to use them.

At the end of the event, individuals who are interested in joining the cast of the spring production can sign up for the rehearsal workshops.

Rehearsals will be held at CPL and will run most Mondays and Wednesdays in May from 12:45 to 2:45 p.m., with a few exceptions.

“We will create theater masks with our cast on the first days of rehearsals,” said Gregson. “Then everyone will study mime and acting techniques and how to perform with their masks. Next, we will find [a] Greek or Celtic myth [to] use as a base for our theater work and performance.”

A dress rehearsal will be held on Friday, May 31 in preparation for the final performance on Saturday, June 1, at 1 p.m., at Carpenter’s Barn.

“You must commit to doing the show if you have signed up for the rehearsal workshops,” said Joseph.

Gregson and Porter both reside in Chenango County and have worked together on at least 12 shows since 2014.

“It is important to bring music into our theater creations,” said Gregson. “[The music] is mostly original, which Eric Porter writes. Often, Eric will involve the cast of actors in the music-making process as well.”

Gregson added that her partnership with Porter works well because they share a similar theater-making philosophy.

“We both love creating original theater work with whomever we are working with,” she said. “[We] believe that everyone we work with can create interesting and powerful theater pieces, and we love making the theater-making process accessible to all.”

“Mime, Myth and Masks” is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by CNY Arts.

a platform for skill development, foster a passion for the sport, and promote unity and sportsmanship among players, coaches, and supporters.

The spring session will feature a diverse range of activities tailored to enhance players’ abilities and enjoyment of the game. In April, participants can expect practice sessions followed by small interclub scrimmages every Sunday afternoon between 12:15 p.m. and 2 p.m. at the Cazenovia High School Turf.

Transitioning into May and June, MCFC plans to host weekly training sessions, with the specific night to be confirmed, followed by a

league held on Saturdays for six weeks starting May 4.

This league will provide an opportunity for players to compete against other local clubs of similar skill levels.

At MCFC, the group says that it prioritizes a child-centered coaching approach, ensuring that each player’s development and enjoyment remain at the forefront of the experience.

“Our experienced coaches, well-versed in coaching soccer across various age groups and skill levels, employ the FC Barcelona coaching methodology,” the organization wrote in a press release. “This methodology emphasizes a proactive, collective, and creative style of play, underpinned by the values of respect, effort, ambition, teamwork, and humility.”

“We are thrilled to kick off our Spring Soccer Session and continue our mission of nurturing young talent, instilling a love for the game, and fostering a supportive soccer community,”

New Woodstock Library hosts artwork

The New Woodstock Free Library recently announced its spring exhibit, “Art Off the Walls” by Lisa Chelenza.

The exhibit will run now through April 27.

The exhibit consists of several large oil, acrylic, and mixed media paintings along with home goods and textiles created using the paintings as inspiration.

After more than 20 years as a radio personality in the Syracuse media market, Chelenza has embarked on another endeavor, bringing her art off the walls and out into the world as fashion and home goods.

As a long time, mixed media painter,

Chelenza often gave her paintings away, hung them on her own walls or painted over them.

“During our long dreary winters all I can do is paint color,” Chelenza said in an artist’s statement.” Many times, I have been tempted to stop working on a painting. But then as I step back to take one last look, I just must add more. One more flower petal, one more highlight, one more color, one more vine.”

Now, Chelenza has the images printed on chiffon and made into scarves, pillowcases, or handbags, giving them new life as wearable art.

“Painting vivid flowers, impressionist landscapes and architecture is addictive and helps get me through our grey monochromatic winters,” Chelenza said. Visit during regular library hours to view Chelenza’s work. Selected items from Chelenza’s catalogue are available for purchase.

Drowsy driving

We have reached that point in the year, where at least by the standards of the calendar, we are getting close to the official start of spring.

One of those markers is the change over to daylight saving time, which took place Sunday.

While many find this practice some what arcane in this day and age and many of the arguments for keeping the practice in place seem illogical, and there have even been efforts to move away from the annual changes in time and stick to one time year round, for this season anyway we still find ourselves adjusting our clocks, both those in our homes and our internal clocks.

The mornings will be a little darker, though it will be light later into the evening, and our own internal clocks will be adjusting and likely a little drowsy, perhaps even feeling a little jet lagged as we adjust to the time change for a little while anyway.

According to AAA driving while battling the urge to fall asleep is a familiar feeling for many.

However, soon-to-be-published research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reveals the shocking lethality of drowsy driving. And with daylight saving time, the darker mornings and lost hour of sleep could lead to more drowsy drivers, according to AAA.

Previous Foundation research points directly to sleep loss as a key culprit in drowsy driving crashes.

According to the new study these figures are far higher than official government statistics, highlighting the underreported nature of drowsy driving crashes. According to NHTSA, there is agreement across the traffic safety, sleep science, and public health communities that the impact of drowsy driving is underestimated.

The AAA Foundation’s study, based on in-depth crash investigations and national fatal crash data, estimates that drowsy driving is a factor in roughly 10 times as many traffic fatalities as traditional crash data indicates.

Drowsiness impairs drivers in several ways: Reduced alertness making it harder to react quickly to hazards. Just one hour less than the expert-recommended minimum of seven hours of sleep increases a driver’s risk of crashing. Impaired judgment increases the risk of making poor decisions on the road. Sleep deprivation increases a driver’s risk of making many ordinary mistakes, leading to crashes. Those deprived of sleep by four plus hours have an impairment similar to those over the legal BAC limit. Hazardous microsleeps can cause momentary lapses in consciousness, leading to loss of control of the vehicle and failure to respond to dangers on the road. AAA research has found that drivers often underestimate their selfperception of drowsiness putting themselves and others at risk.

To stay safe as we adjust to the time change AAA recommends getting enough sleep before driving. Aim for at least seven hours of sleep per night. Travel at times of the day when you are normally awake. Avoid driving when you are tired or sleepy. Take breaks every two hours or 100 miles. Get out of the car, stretch your legs, and get fresh air. Plan and identify safe, comfortable places to take breaks. Don’t wait until you’re already feeling drowsy. Avoid heavy meals before driving. Eating a large meal can make you feel tired and sluggish. Avoid alcohol and drugs. Both can impair your driving ability. Besides harming driving directly, they can also amplify drowsiness. Listen to your body. If you start to feel tired, pull over and take a break. Don’t try to push through it. Travel with an alert passenger and take turns driving. Sharing the driving can help you stay awake and alert. Don’t underestimate the power of a quick nap. A 20- to 30-minute nap can significantly improve your alertness. AAA also supports the development of vehicle technology that can detect drowsiness and prevent drivers from operating a vehicle when impaired. This technology could help to save lives by preventing drowsy driving crashes.

lifE’S PoEMS

The Marcellus Free Library is encouraging us to share poetry with each other.

Pocket poems, those that can physically fit on a half sheet of paper, to fit into a faux blue jeans pocket … but they will take any length, rhyme or free verse.

Why poetry? It seems that humans and maybe even non-humans are drawn to the wholeness of poetry.

Poetry is something beyond the didactic, the descriptive, the authentic, because it is more didactic, more descriptive and more authentic, reaching places where words alone fall short.

Poetry engages the listener in mystical ways, evoking a consciousness born of filling in where the words leave off.

“Poem in October” by Dylan Thomas, a poem that had me at its first line, describes the author’s 30th birthday. I first read it while in college, well before I was 30.

It spoke to me powerfully then. It still speaks powerfully now, when 30 is only a vague memory.

“And I rose/ In a rainy autumn/ And walked abroad in shower of all my days” - lines packed with so much meaning for anyone, but especially for me. That is how it is with poetry … meanings that are common, transcendent, in the magic of their construction … a special meaning for each of us.

Poetry is not limited to words.

Thirty-thousand-year-old cave paintings at Lascaux, Trois Frers and Altamira are thought to be examples of another kind of enchantment known as sympathetic magic.

The ancient artist drew an animal on the cave wall impaled with an arrow conjuring a connection that will lead to a successful hunt. Some theorists believe that in addition to the magical impulse, there are, on those walls, examples of poetry for people without a written language.

The depictions of animals can very well be the artist telling us about his totems, those creatures with which he or she shares a soul or they may be a way of sharing their beauty.

The handprints alone say, “I was here.”

There are the classical poets, Byron, Keats, Donne, whose long powerful verses have become part of the established metaphor, but today, for most of us, poetry comes with the modern troubadour, the song writer who captures that combination of words that share meanings so common and yet so special that we remember them, own them digitally and memorize without difficulty.

I’m thinking now of the tender song popularized by Bette Midler, The Rose: Just remember in the winter Far beneath the bitter snows Lies the seed that with the sun’s love

Ramblings from the empty nest

In the spring becomes the rose

A pox on the poet who crafts the dense, obscure lines that need reference works to understand.

That is not poetry, but a narcissistic weaving of personal pique.

A poem can be like Thomas’s lovely evocative words, “And I saw in the turning so clearly a child’s/ Forgotten mornings when he walked with his mother/ Through the parables/ Of sunlight/ And the legends of the green chapels” Or words as silly as Jack Prelutsky’s “Be glad your nose is on your face/not pasted on some other place.”

They both reach us all.

There are Saturday-morningson-the-creek poetry where a father and his little boys come to throw rocks, for no particular reason and for a most particular reason … a poem of several purposes that the boys will take with them into their future.

There is poetry in the interplay between a mother and her child as she reads a bedtime story and tucks her little ones safely into bed, as she folds away a child’s clothing remembering the sweetness of little hands and hugs and kisses, a table decorated to celebrate a birthday, a good medical report, passing a test, a thoughtful meal for the feted person, the soft purr of a small cat as she sleeps on your lap.

This is how poetry works; it is

Ferro l Page 7

Stay away from mock madness

Ah, that time of year, March, where the snow melts off….. wait, it already did. Okay then, try to use a different metaphor.

Or just skip the metaphors and understand that we are entering a period of hype, misinformation, misdirection, and noise so cacophonous that it’s impossible to avoid yet still serves no real purpose.

Welcome to the season of the mock.

I’m not talking about anything real. Unfortunately in sports, reality is too difficult and complicated for some to grasp, so they run to the alternative, imaginatively carving out a very profitable niche out of absolutely nothing.

It comes in two forms. One is in college basketball, where two big, exciting and memorable tournaments are about to tip off, but not before we’re inundated with endless reminders of who is in and out of these fields from people who, notably, are not on the actual committees making the actual selections.

Far worse is the lead-up to the NFL Draft, because heaven forbid you go an entire day without 10 different people offering 10 different versions of a draft still weeks (and several trades) away and, again, none of these people are making the actual decisions.

You see, it’s quite easy to put out multiple renditions of the same bracket or draft because, hey, no one’s going to take your job if you’re off target – in fact, you get elevated to the title “Bracketologist” or “Draft Expert”, more important than the people whose lives, futures and careers you are assessing.

Guess who doesn’t get that luxury? Basketball coaches whose employment might depend on whether the initials associated with their season are NCAA or NIT, or NFL general managers who have no time to theorize about 20 different trades or selections, especially since, if one of them goes wrong, they could get canned.

Besides, it’s always delicious to see people loudly proclaim their distaste for the decisions rendered, only to find out that, hey, maybe the guys knew what they were doing all along.

A clear example of this was 2011. When the NCAA dance card went from 65 to 68 teams, a lot of disdain was thrown the way of

More recently, there was the lead-up to the 2023 NFL Draft and the utter conviction of many that Bryce Young was can’t-miss and C.J. Stroud was a gamble, simply based on perceptions and test scores and other trivial matters.

One season in, Stroud has proven far better, having turned the bottom-feeding Houston Texans into a division champion and playoff winner.

No matter how many times this happens, though, we never learn the lesson. We never step back, take a breath and realize that good choices are not based on the amount of attention they might get.

When, on Sunday, the NCAA fields are announced, two things will happen. One, the bracket nuts will crow about how many they got right, as if the tournament is about them. Spoiler alert – it isn’t.

Then we’ll go right to predictions, made with absolute certainty by people who ought to know better. Seth Davis was certain Montana would beat Syracuse in 2013 and loudly announced it the moment the bracket went up. A few days alter...Final Four-bound Orange 81, Grizzlies 34. Genius.

Fast forward a month, and the mock NFL Draft boards will continue to pile up, even as trades happen all the way up to the moment of selections, rendering most, if not all, of those projections moot.

Worse yet is the instant grades. For the love of all things holy, can we refrain ourselves from assessing how teams do with their picks until these guys, you know, actually play a down? It’s like grading a test before anyone’s taken it. Pick your analogy, whether it’s skipping ahead in a book until the final chapter or fast-forwarding a movie to the last 10 minutes. In sports, the journey is where the richest stories are told and deepest lessons are learned – a fact that you can’t fake, or mock.

There’s an old phrase – it’s like riding a bike. For Linda Johnson, walking and talking used to be like riding a bike, but now, riding a bike has become easier.

“Riding 600 miles is not going to be a walk in the park, but for Linda, a “walk in the park” will be out of the question in a few years, unless a cure is found, said Andy Johnson, Linda’s husband.

Linda Johnson has a rare disease called Friedreich’s Ataxia, a degenerative genetic disorder that causes deterioration in nerves that connect the brain with muscle tissue.

In an attempt to raise awareness and funds, Linda and Andy Johnson are riding bikes with a group from Sacramento, California to Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I hadn’t ridden a bike in 20 years,” Linda Johnson said.

The ride, inspired by Kyle Bryant who made the trip from California to Tennessee last year to speak at the National Ataxia Foundation convention.

Johnson contacted him via e-mail and arranged to join him and his family in a much shorter ride because the NAF convention is being held in Las Vegas this year.

About one year into a renovation project at 52-54 Albany St, owners Mark and Patricia Burritt are anxiously awaiting the completion and opening of Allure, their planned dance and fitness studio.

At this time there is no definitive end date for construction or the grand opening, but the Burritts said they are anticipating their opportunity to move in.

We are looking forward to completion and are excited for the opening,” the Burritts told the Cazenovia Republican.

The building, which formerly housed Albert’s Restaurant, will soon host four new apartments and two dance rooms, each approximately 800 square-feet.

The project to create and erect a statue of Cazenovia founder John Lincklaen in the village is moving forward with the creation of a project committee and a resolution of official support from the village board.

Statue proponents Paul Brooks and Paul Parpard last week requested from the village board an official recognition of the project committee and the trustees’ sanction to move forward, which the board approved.

“The board resolution is step one to get the organizing committee recognized by the village government as the planning/implementing committee.”

The statue envisioned by Brooks and Parpard, which Parpard, a renowned local artist, would create, would celebrate Lincklaen’s founding of the village, as well as his subsequent influence in the growth of the community.

Cazenovia’s Presbyterian Church is the oldest church in Madison County. It stands as an icon to the beliefs and aspirations of early and mid-19th century Cazenovians.

The congregation itself was formed in 1799 with Joshua Leonard as its first pastor.

It took seven years to establish the congregation and raise funds for the building. Now in 2018, the 200-plus-year-old church is due to become 100 percent handicap accessible.

If bunnies could talk, Snowball would have some “tails” to tell! Believe it or not, this hotot came to the shelter as a stray. A good Samaritan found him on their porch and brought him to the shelter, and he’s been here since November. To have a rabbit is a commitment, since they can live anywhere from eight years to even twelve years! Bunnies make great pets – for the right family. They need to be tended to every day and deserve toys, treats, gentle handling, exercise, and attention. They’re very fragile and don’t make good pets for rambunctious children. Snowball has been neutered, and he’s ready for the next chapter of his life. If you’re looking for some “bunny” to love, look no further than Snowball! In order to adopt, you must fill out an application, pay an adoption fee, and have your pets up- to-date on their vaccines. All adopted cats and dogs are spayed or neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on their vaccines and flea treatment before they go home. The CNYSPCA is located at 5878 East Molloy Road, Syracuse. For more information about adoption, call 315-454-4479, mail frontdesk1@cnyspca.org, or visit cnyspca.org.

I am always amazed at things I read about golf today, compared to the books and articles that were written over 50 or more years ago… Nothing changes. e realities, essential facts and truth of the matter is…Nothing changes!

For example, Timothy Gallwey is now 86 years old. In the 1970’s, he started writing a series of books about a methodology for coaching and the development of personal and professional excellence in a variety of elds including golf, tennis, music, work and skiing. In his book, e Inner Game of Golf, Mr. Galley’s thoughts were focused on the optimal golf experience being one that should have an “equal balance between Learning, Performance and Enjoyment”. Brilliant, simply genius. In “7” words, Mr. Galley has put the game of “Life & Golf” in one little neat package that gives us a roadmap to Knowledge, Success and Pride. WOW! Andy Hayes, Senior Golf Coach at e Golf Practice, also adds his “two cents”.

Learning…What Does Golf Teach Us?

Golf is a great teacher but we have to pay attention. We can learn things about ourselves through golf if we notice them.

* How our mindset changes when things are good or bad.

* How we respond to pressure.

* How we respond when something feels too easy.

* How we respond when something feels di cult.

* e di erence in how you treat people when playing good vs playing bad.

* Why do you really play golf?

Performance…Does the Score Always Re ect Performance?

Ways to describe our performance in addition to our score.

* I controlled my ball.

* I battled back.

* I crumbled down the stretch.

* I let the conditions distract me.

* I had too many swing thoughts.

Enjoyment…Do Golfers Connect Enjoyment to Scoring?

ere is more out there to enjoy when you separate the two.

* e Feeling of a Well Struck Shot.

* e surprises.

* e miracles.

* e lucky breaks.

* e ight of the ball in the air.

* e sound of an iron shot.

LEARNING…PERFORMANCE… ENJOYMENT

Mr. Gallwey got it right! “If you can focus about having a balance of Learning, Performance and Enjoyment, you’ll nd more in each category…whenever you play”. erefore, instead of describing your round as…”87…couldn’t putt”. You could answer…”I really controlled my ball ight on the front 9, but then as the pressure increased in the match, I couldn’t make any putts. I hit a 7 iron on #6 that was so pure, it felt like I hit a marshmallow and it never le the stick. I learned that I need to stop letting my mind dri to the future as I added up my score in the middle of the round because it distracts me and I need to practice my putting”.

LEARNING, PERFORMANCE AND ENJOYMENT = KNOWLEDGE, SUCCESS AND PRIDE!

ank you Timothy Gallwey…you nailed it over 50 years ago.

Set in the 1930s, the musical tells the story of a well-todo young New York banker, Bobby Child, who is sent to Deadrock, Nevada, to foreclose on a failing theatre.

In Deadrock, he falls for Polly Baker, the theatre owner’s daughter.

To win her heart and save the theater, he disguises himself as a famous Broadway producer and sets out to put on a spectacular show.

Under the direction of Maggie Dougherty and Maureen Carroll, the CHS Drama Club delivered captivating performances featuring talented leads and supporting cast members, lots of laughs, impressive dance numbers, great costumes, and a strong pit orchestra.

The production also showcased the skills of the drama club’s hard-working stage and production crews.

“The high school drama club students exemplify unmatched dedication and tireless work ethic, transforming challenges into triumphs with their unwavering commitment to excellence on stage,” said Dougherty, who serves as the CHS choral music teacher and fine arts department chair.

Cazenovia’s rendition of “Crazy for You” starred Jack Coburn as Bobby Child, Ilsa Denton as Polly Baker, Molly Wilcox as Lottie Child, Teagan Brown as Irene Roth, Bryce Odessa as Bela Zangler, Joe Fisher as Lank Hawkins, Abby Falso as Tess, Eliza Smith as Patsy, Maeve Kelly as Patricia Fodor, Bel Lazarsky as Jeanie Fodor, Logan Patane as Everett Baker, Jacob Gentner as Pete, Connor Hopper as Wyatt/Perkins, Charlie Wilcox as Mingo, Jayce Hyatt as Moose, Jonas Putman as Junior, Lucy Hagan as Sheila, Meghan Mehlbaum as Mitzi, Olivia Morse as Betsy, Cadence Walter as Louise, Olivia Wong as Margie, Sidney Thompson as Sidney, Becca Brooks as Vera, Tommy Stevens as Billy, Ryan Belden as Custus, Bobby Livingston as Cowboy, and Owen Woodworth as Cowboy.

“I

actually my age who said it was formative for them,” Lutter said. “They were there all the time, it was this really positive space for them, and it gave them a sense of belonging.”

According to Lutter, the Town Shop staff is paid by the Town of Camillus and the costs of the programs are covered by grants and community donations and through vendor relations.

Town Shop’s three-story building is owned by the town, which also purchased a van for the center.

“My son is only three right now, so he’s got a lot of time before he would use something like this, but I would just love for him to go somewhere with his friends after school that is safe and adult-supervised [but would also allow him] to have some independence as a kid,” said Lutter.

She next presented her vision for how the Town Shop Youth Center concept could be applied in Cazenovia on a trial basis.

To do so, the Town of Cazenovia could secure an affordable space to launch programming and hire a director.

According to Lutter, the space would need to be within walking distance of the middle and high schools.

She said grant writing for the programming and for outfitting the space

could commence immediately, and the youth could be involved in planning everything from the programs offered to the design of the space and the center’s branding.

In an informational handout that she prepared for the board, Lutter cites the American Planning Association’s “2024 Trend Report for Planners,” which states that as more work becomes remote and online shopping increases, downtowns need to evolve to thrive.

“A youth center would be a positive addition to Cazenovia’s downtown that provides young people with their own safe space and would also add overall vibrancy to Cazenovia,” she wrote.

She also pointed out that the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families cites high-quality after-school programs as leading to improved school participation, greater social and emotional learning, and increased safety for youth.

Lutter informed the board that she has spoken with the Town Shop Youth Center executive director, and she has started exploring potential youth center spaces in downtown Cazenovia.

Supervisor Kyle Reger thanked Lutter for bringing the idea to the board and invited her to get in touch with him to discuss it further.

Town Attorney John Langey reported that he and councilors Sheila Fallon

and Kelli Johnson recently met with a small group of citizens regarding potential changes to the town’s cell tower law.

He described the meeting as productive and noted that the group is planning to provide some additional written input for the town to evaluate.

Reger announced that he will be holding his next monthly office hours on Saturday, March 30, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., to allow community members to sit down with him and discuss any town issue.

The CLA is holding a community outreach event on April 14 at Our Farm, 1590 Peth Rd., Manlius. The event is intended to keep everyone up to date on the CLA’s activity and to discuss any lake-related concerns people might have.
