Superintendent clears up misinformation regarding turf field project and budget gap

During the March 18 Cazenovia Central School District Board of Education (CCSD BOE) meeting, Superintendent Christopher DiFulvio addressed some misinformation circulating on social media that has inaccurately linked CCSD’s turf field project to the $1.85 million budget gap facing the district for the 2024-25 school year.

According to CCSD’s March newsletter, the district’s ongoing budget process has been significantly impacted by recent financial challenges presented by New York State.

“We’ve explored creative solutions to preserve our programming over the past several years,” DiFulvio wrote in the newsletter. “However, the governor’s proposed budget has added complexity to our ability to remain innovative. Currently,

we are conducting a thorough examination of our line-by-line budget, and unfortunately, a $1.85 million gap exists.”

According to DiFulvio, more than half of the school districts across the state are facing similar financial challenges.

CCSD’s athletic field modifications are part of a $10,713,319 Phase II Capital Project aimed at modernizing the physical education, athletics, and community facilities at the Emory Avenue Complex.

The project was approved by a capital project referendum vote in March 2022.

The upper turf multi-use field has been completed and used frequently by physical education classes, community members, and multiple sports teams. The district anticipates an Aug. 1 completion date for the lower field and track.

“The budget gap remains at $1.85 million with or without the turf project,” DiFulvio said during Monday’s meeting. The superintendent pointed out that the debt payments related to the project are not factored into the 2023-24 budget. He also stated that the local cost of the turf project in 2024-25 represents less than one percent of the total school district budget.

“We are actually receiving a roughly $72,000 credit this year, helping our budget, [due to a] bond premium from the project,” he said. “This year [we are] receiving benefit from it. We anticipate, looking ahead, a decrease in transportation costs and rental expenses for field use.”

Additionally, DiFulvio remarked that the turf project is a significant attraction for families and the wider community, enhancing the competitiveness of the district, including in terms of drawing new home buyers and families.

“Yes, the capital project, like all capital projects, does impact our local tax levy,” DiFulvio said. “However, rest assured that your taxes are the second lowest in the county and one of the lowest taxed districts in our region. . . . The tax levy last year was increased by 6.9 percent. That does not mean people’s taxes went up by 6.9 percent. [As an example], I live in the school district and my school taxes increased by 2.55 percent last year. The increase throughout the district, however, is variable and based on many factors.”

The superintendent also noted that in 15 years, the district can use the debt falling off for another project.

BOE member Dr. Jan Woodworth then spoke to make clear that the monies the district uses to do a capital project

initiative, which provides free handson swim safety instruction to hundreds of Syracuse City School children each year.

“Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity,” the YMCA of CNY website states.

“The [SAW] program can help you

are different from those available for the district to spend in its regular budget.

“It’s two different pots of money, so to speak,” she said. “I think that understanding is lacking. When I have conversations with people, [what I hear all the time is] that if we hadn’t done the turf fields, we’d have all this money. That isn’t true at all.”

CCSD Assistant Superintendent/ School Business Official Thomas Finnerty provided further insight into how the project is helping the budget this year.

According to Finnerty, the payment for the turf project this year is $380,000, and the district is due to receive $376,000 in aid.

“So, the local share this year is $4,000, but we’ve got a bond premium worth $77,000 that will go towards that payment of $380,000, so in reality, [this] year the turf project is kicking in, so to speak, $72,000 towards the budget,” he said. “So, it’s actually helping us this year. Will it be that [way] every year from now on? No, but this is a unique year.”

Budget updates

DiFulvio reported that CCSD is currently planning the following actions for the 2024-25 school year: cutting one foreign language maternity leave, cutting one library aide position, cutting one elementary teacher position, cutting one instructional coach position, cutting one academic support position, cutting $100,000 from the technology budget, leveling out all BOCES expenses, and combining athletic teams when it makes sense.

The superintendent explained that these actions, in addition to using $500,000 of appropriated fund balance, are helping the district get to the current estimated budget gap of $1.85 million.

“The current budget gap is after $500,000 of appropriated fund balance

make sure they learn essential water safety skills, which can open up a world of possibilities for them to satisfy their curiosity safely.

At the YMCA of Central New York, programs like this help us bridge the gap in the delivery of swim lessons and water safety education in the US — especially in under-served communities.”

The March 23 fundraiser will also help support scholarships for the Y’s

and those cuts,” said DiFulvio. “We cut those [from the budget] to get to that gap.”

He noted that the planned cuts are not set in stone.

The district has also implemented a spending freeze on non-essential expenses, such as adding more student clubs.

Additionally, measures have been taken to inform local representatives of the district’s financial situation.

To keep residents informed and gather input, the district is inviting community members — including students and parents, faculty and staff, and people not directly affiliated with the district — to a school budget community conversation on March 20, 2024, at 6:30 p.m. in the high school’s Buckley Gym. During the session, the CCSD administration will present examples of potential ways to close the $1.85 million gap and discuss the challenges facing the district.

According to an announcement posted on the district website, potential options to close the gap could include reducing staff and programming, using budget reserves, and/or exceeding the allowable tax levy limit.

Attendees will have the opportunity to weigh in on what matters most to them when it comes to the CCSD educational experience.

The district plans to make a survey available after the March 20 event for people who are unable to attend but are interested in sharing their thoughts on the options.

A final budget proposal will go before voters on May 21, 2024.

Bus lift repair and other proposed facility improvements

During his report, DiFulvio also announced that the district has decided to move forward with repairing the bus garage’s sole underground lift. The concrete that supports the lift is

camps and before- and after-school programs. Activities offered at the organization’s many camps include swimming, boating, arts and crafts, fine arts, horseback riding, field trips, archery, sports, team building, and character development activities.

Hughes said that while all the YMCA of CNY camps are open to Cazenovia area residents, the two closest camps are the Manlius Y summer camp and Camp Evergreen, which is also in Manlius.

The Y’s licensed before- and afterschool programs are offered to kids in grades K-7 and are held at schools and other sites within many CNY school districts.

failing. The lift is required to maintain the bus fleet and to perform bi-annual inspections by the NYS Department of Transportation. The district has been alerted that the lift will not pass its next inspection in June 2024.

According to the superintendent, the estimated cost of the repair is $160,000, which is roughly one-third of the original quoted price.

“The reduction in pricing could not have happened without the collaboration of the entire school district community,” he said.

The district is still exploring all options for its next transportation facility and expects to gather a committee of stakeholders to review all recommendations and then present options to the BOE.

DiFulvio also informed the BOE that the district issued a request for proposals to repair its tennis courts to maintain their safety for the school’s physical education (PE) classes and tennis teams.

The proposed plan is to update the lines on the courts to allow for pickleball play in PE classes, and the goal of the repairs is to gain another seven years of life out of the courts.

“Once we have an idea of the repair cost, I will certainly let the board of education know,” DiFulvio said, later adding that the project is not “a done deal.”

CCSD Board of Education meeting dates are listed on the district website and the school calendar. For more information on the school board, visit cazenoviacsd.com.

According to the Y, the programs are aimed at reinforcing positive values in a caring atmosphere. Activities are designed to help kids make friends and grow stronger in mind, body, and spirit.

The Y presented its first Plunge into Spring event in 2023.

“Last year we had about 20 [participants],” said Hughes. “Some people donated money to not jump in the cold water!”

Grew up in Cazenovia

Steven Leonard Lesinski, 44, of West Chazy, N.Y., cashed in his chips on March 7, 2024, with his loving wife, Stacy, by his side.

Steve was born in Syracuse in 1979 and grew up in Cazenovia, raised by his loving parents, Kathy and Federico, alongside his siblings Mike, Mark and Julie. From his very first to his very last breath, he was always happy and smiling. Always a kid at heart and the eternal jokester, he wouldn’t let up until everyone was in stitches with tears of laughter streaming down their faces. Steve was adored and loved by so many. His generosity knew no bounds. He would give everything he had if he knew it would help another person. Everyone who knew him had stories to share.

After graduating from Cazenovia High School, Steve went on to earn his Bachelors of Fine Arts in graphic design at SUNY Oswego. His passion for design led to him opening Empire Signage, using his entrepreneurial talents to their fullest. He always had an inventive spirit and loved revealing his latest idea. Steve went on to start

Betsy Budrow, 91 Pioneering volunteers with CaVaC

Betsy Fraser Budrow passed away peacefully on Sept. 6, 2023, at the age of 91 after a nine-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Betsy was born in Albany on Nov. 19, 1931, to the late James Kenneth Fraser, Sr., and Josephine (Murray) Fraser.

She graduated from Rensselaer High School, Rensselaer, N.Y., and Skidmore College, Saratoga, N.Y., with a degree in mathematics. She spent much of her adult life in Cazenovia, raising a family and working as the office manager at the local medical center.

Betsy was also one of the pioneering volunteers with CAVAC (Cazenovia Area Volunteer Ambulance Corps). She

Diana Southworth, 87 devoted to family and friends

Diana Southworth, a long-time resident of Cazenovia and a fixture in the community, passed away peacefully in Cape Cod last month. She was 87.

Diana lived in Caz for nearly 50 years, raising four boys—John, Mark, Tim and Jeff—as well as a menagerie of pets, including several dogs, dozens of cats, a couple goats and even a Starling named Poe who would greet neighbors as they walked past her house. Her home was always full of her sons’ friends and friends of friends. She was a mom to all and her door was always open. She was also a grandma to six and a great-grandma to four.

Diana grew up in Pittsfield, MA. After attending Wheaton College, she supported many charitable causes, married John Southworth in 1960, moved to Caz and became a popular home visitor for the Madison County Head Start program. She was also an enthusiastic world traveler, living with her family aboard a boat in the Bahamas for a year, as well as joining her sister, Virginia, on many trips abroad—even riding camels over the desert past the pyra -

While attending SUNY Oswego, Steve met the love of his life, Stacy. They married in 2006 and built a beautiful family together with their daughters, Robin and Rosemary. mids in Egypt. She spent the last few years in Cape Cod, spending time with her son John and many dear friends enjoying nearby beaches, as well as lunch outings, concerts and her beloved symphony. She lived to the fullest until the end.

Diana was kind, smart, funny and extremely devoted to her family and friends.

Her charm and amazing strength will be greatly missed.

“dad gift” that no one ever knew about, not even Stacy. He never missed an opportunity to show his daughters and his wife how loved they were.

Steve would often be found outside boating, four-wheeling, fishing and sitting around a campfire. He instilled these passions in his daughters, never missing the opportunity to spend any moment making these memories. He loved grilling, especially his ribeye, snow or shine.

In addition to fishing, Steve and Stacy were avid Phishers. His favorite song to listen to live was “Farmhouse,” but he mostly loved to hear it because he knew that Stacy liked it the least, even though she would inevitably sing along. Steve could guarantee tickets to any show, no matter how hard they were to get.

Steve’s competitive spirit was unparalleled. It wasn’t uncommon to see him run the table any time he played pool or poker. From family ping-pong championships on Christmas Eve to a friendly game of Apples to Apples on Thanksgiving, there was never any doubt that Steve came to win. This carried into his regular Rocket League sessions where he made friends and foes alike.

She is also survived by her brother Robert (Nancy) Fraser, sister-in-law Joyce Fraser, as well as six great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.

She will be remembered for her can-do spirit for a variety of projects, whether it was volunteering at her local church or making each of her grandchildren hand-made quilts. A private memorial service is planned in the Albany area with only close family members present. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation in her name.

Arrangements have been entrusted by the family to The Dufresne & Cavanaugh Funeral Home, Latham. For further information or to leave a condolence message for the family please visit dufresneandcavanaugh.co m.

Being the quintessential go-getter, you could often find him at auctions, picking up something from Facebook Marketplace, or finding a good deal. He also had a knack for convincing others to help him and then making them think it was their idea all along.

Steve was such a force in every aspect of his life. He made an impact on everyone he met and formed bonds that will forever be cherished in our hearts. He will be deeply missed.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 18 years, Stacy, and adoring daughters Robin and Rosemary; parents Katherine and Federico Meira; siblings Michael (Jocelyn) Lesinski, Mark (Jen) Lesinski, Julie Lesinski (Adam Walburger), Andres (Cinthya) Meira, and Monica Meira; mother and father-in-law Vern/Jim and Sherry Favreau; brother in-law Christopher (Adriana) Favreau; grandmother-in-law Mabel King; numerous beloved nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, cousins, and dear friends.

Steve was predeceased by his grandparents Leonard and Mary Barker, Anthony and Hilda Lesinski, and his best (animal) girl Layla.

His funeral services took place in Plattsburgh, N.Y., on March 12, 2024.

A good reminder

Daylight saving time began on March 10.

While this means we are seeing more daylight later in the day, it also takes a little time to adjust to the change.

And while some of us might be feeling a little lagging the past week or, we will adjust.

Aside from getting used to the time change this is also a good time of year to do some housekeeping.

We often think of spring as a good time to do some cleaning, maybe get rid of some things we don’t use anymore, and really get our homes fresh as the season changes.

But this is also a good time to take stock of some devices around the house we might take for granted.

The American Red Cross encourages everyone to test their smoke alarms as they turn their clocks forward to make sure the devices are working.

“Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half as you only have about two minutes to get out,” said Kevin Coffey, chief executive officer, American Red Cross, Eastern New York Region. “Every second counts when there’s a home fire and the sooner an alarm alerts you to a fire, the sooner you can get to a safer place. When you turn your clocks forward this weekend, test your smoke alarms too to help prevent a tragedy in your home.”

Over the past month, local Red Cross volunteers responded to help 108 families affected by 66 home fires, which account for most of the about 65,000 disasters that the Red Cross responds to annually across the country.

The American Red Cross suggests that this is a good time to test your smoke alarms and replace the batteries if needed.

The organization also has some other suggestions for measures people can take or refresh this spring to ensure they and their family are safe.

The Red Cross recommends installing smoke alarms on every level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas.

Replace smoke alarms that are 10 years or older. Components can become less sensitive over time. Follow your alarm manufacturer’s instructions.

Practice your two-minute home fire escape plan. Make sure everyone in your household can get out in less than two minutes — the amount of time you may have to escape a burning home before it’s too late.

Include at least two ways to get out of every room and select a meeting spot at a safe distance away from your home, such as your neighbor’s house or a landmark like a specific tree in your front yard.

With the help of local volunteers and partners, the Red Cross is installing free smoke alarms in homes and educating people about fire safety.

To request an appointment, contact the Eastern New York Preparedness Team at 518-694-5121 or Preparedness.

ENY@redcross.or g.

Since October 2014, the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, working with community partners, has saved at least 2,030 lives, including 107 in Eastern New York, by educating families about fire safety, helping them create escape plans and installing free smoke alarms.

“Nice Work If You Can Get It” is a song and a dance number coming near the finale of this year’s Cazenovia High school drama Club’s presentation of “Crazy for You.”

And I was there for all four performances. Sure, to begin with I came to see my oldest grandson who was in the cast, but, unprepared, I experienced something else, something above and beyond.

The energy, the monthslong preparation learning lines, songs, cues and how to tap dance, the enthusiasm of the cast was palpable.

The enthusiasm, the absolute delight they radiated was catching.

And there was more, more in the strong relationship between and among the cast, the crew and the faculty who were the team that brought it all to fruition.

And there was still more, as the production demonstrated what all teachers strive forauthentic assessment.

You measure the success of what you actually do and in a theatrical production that encompasses the coordination, the cooperation, the building of collegiality that demonstrates the worth of all of the participants from musicians to stage crew to ushers to performers.

Separation of church and state

To the editor:

It is necessary to respectfully correct Ms Meguid’s deficient understanding of the U.S. Constitution (from her March 6 letter), because the phrase “separation of church and state” appears nowhere in that document.

The phrase comes from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson to a group of Baptist ministers in Connecticut. If she is attempting to reference the 1st Amendment, it reads: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;” which simply means that Congress was forbidden from declaring a specific Christian denomination as the national religion, as was already the case in many states and European nations at that time.

Today’s secularists hate the fact that our nation was founded on the Bible. For example, several of the early colonial constitutions incorporated laws from the book of Exodus in their text.

I remember standing in the cafeteria, watching my pupils with their heads down concentrating on the end-of-the-year testing mandated by the state.

I felt proud of what had transpired, proud that we had worked through all of the barriers that come to the fore during the year.

known as Election Day and Artillery sermons, teaching the people what the Bible said about the proper role of government as well as the duties of citizens toward their government.

Many ministers also served as elected officials in colonial governments and used their wisdom to help write laws, using the Bible as their guide. Our Founding Fathers studied the Bible diligently and revered it as their great political text book because it had so much to say about civil government.

The U.S. Constitution is a thoroughly Christian document because its Framers incorporated many Biblical principles of government within its structure.

This was only reasonable since most of the Framers were either confessing Christians or men with a highly developed Biblical worldview.

It is our rejection of God and His Word that has brought us to the dire straits our nation is suffering from today.

Rather than continue to stubbornly spurn God and His all sufficient grace we need to follow the plan laid out in 2nd Chronicles 7:14, that of humbling ourselves, looking toward

ings with different strengths, weaknesses and interests.

The arts provide an opportunity for so many students to shine.

My own experience working with student productions taught me that for all students, from those who excelled to those for whom school was difficult, there were opportunities to demonstrate skills in some way in a school play.

The experience teaches lessons in collegiality and cooperation that can translate into the “real” world.

It teaches that hard work counts, that your part is part of the success of the whole.

Heady stuff.

Being a teacher can be difficult. Obtuse state mandates, local bruhahas, disgruntled parents, students who come to class burdened with more than you can imagine … all are on the negative side of the ledger.

On the other side is the transcendence of the links that are forged between teacher and student, the sense of connection, often not borne out for many years.

Remember the phrase “I teach, I touch the future?”

There is a sense that being there for the children, caring for their current and future successes, is beyond joy.

To quote the title from George and Ira Gershwin, It is “Nice work if you get it.”

and praying to God for deliverance, and confessing and repenting of our wicked national sins. Only then will God heal our once great nation.

THe DANCe We’ve ALL WAITeD FOR

Good thing that a majority of the women’s basketball conference tournaments were done more than a week before the NCAA tournament began, for two reasons.

First, it gives these players a chance to rest, regroup and prepare for the biggest games of their careers. Second, at least in a few cases we still need time to process and absorb all the exciting possibilities this tournament could provide.

Of course it starts with Caitlin Clark. The very presence of Division I’s all-time leading scorer who just happens to lead the country in assists is the sun around which this entire event rotates.

Sellout crowds everywhere, record TV ratings – like it or not, a whole lot of people will tune in solely for Clark, skimming over Iowa’s collective quest for a national title and defining all that happens through her lens.

Fair enough, but all those who will only watch Clark, and no one else, will miss so many other great narratives.

There’s the last two national champions, unbeaten South Carolina and

tough-minded LSU, who come off an SEC championship game that featured a near-brawl in the final minutes, intensity boiling over and entire benches ejected.

With strong inside and outside games, the Gamecocks can beat you many ways. Proud, defiant Angel Reese powers the Tigers, making you watch even if you tire of Kim Mulkey’s outfits and other attentiongrabbers.

There’s historic programs at Connecticut, Notre Dame, Texas, Stanford and USC, all of them past champions and each side capable of least a push to the Final Four with their own compelling figures.

Whether it’s Paige Bueckers trying to carry an injury-plagued Huskies squad in the way Diana Taurasi and Breanna Stewart did in the past, or the Trojans riding the incandescent talents of freshman JuJu Watkins trying to channel her inner Cheryl Miller, glories past and present are on hand.

Oh, and at Stanford Tara VanDeveer just set the record for most coaching wins, with Geno Auriemma close be -

Teaching in Cazenovia High School is like trying to drive at turnpike speeds out Fenner Street.

These was the impression made by the high school department heads as they talked to The Republican last week about the new high school proposed for the Freeborn property on Fenner Road.

Without exception, the department heads agreed that the present high school facility is overcrowded and unsuitable for educating students in contemporary subject matter, according to the best-accepted, up to date teaching methods. A new high school, declared Maxwell H. Buckley, director of athletics, “is what we need; it’s not going out on a limb.”

The proposed high school would provide four separate areas, Mr. Buckley said, enough to accommodate a maximum of 1,200 – 1,300 students.

The other department heads echoed the need for space, to provide adequate area for instruction and to simply keep out of each other’s way.

Corner Camera Craft, a shop specializing in finishing of roll films and in selling photographic supplies and records was opened Saturday at 19 Lincklaen St. in the store formerly occupied by The Book Shop by Goerge Daggett, Jack Parisou and Dick Race, all of Cazenovia.

The store has been fitted with a dark room for developing, printing and enlarging of film so that rapid service can be provided.

Cameras and camera supplies as well as all speed phonograph records of all varieties will be sold.

The shop will be open in the evenings as well as during the day, weekdays and Saturdays.

A novel addition to the pet family of this community arrived this week at the post office in the form of a young alligator.

The “reptile” was about 8 inches long, brightly colored and quite tame. In the same box with him came two small highly colored turtles.

Edward Coon says that he wonders just what fun there would be in a year or two if the now small alligator were given his freedom in the old canal and allowed to follow his natural inclinations. – Chittenango Times

Cazenovia people yesterday afternoon were treated to a very unusual sight – a yoke of oxen driven through town, building a load of baled hay. They are owned and were driven by H. G. Brown, who lives on the Mike Grady farm up the lake road just across the county line.

Evidently, he was a stranger in these parts as he acquired the way to the Lehigh Valley station.

The oxen are guided without reins, the driver’s whip and “gee” and “haw” directing the animals. The last yoke of oxen in this section was owned by the late Joe Coley who lived just north of New Woodstock on the east road.

hind. Two absolute legends, and how many more go-rounds do they have?

Here in Syracuse, where the Orange’s shocking 2016 run to the national title game is looked back on with decidedly mixed feelings given what transpired a few years later, there’s a chance for real joy.

In just two seasons in charge, Felisha Legette-Jack, named ACC Coach of the Year, has pushed the Orange into the top 20, with no small help from Dyaisha Fair, who came over from UB with Felisha and, between the two schools, has netted more than 3,000 career points.

Could SU get to the tournament’s second week? Unlike with the men, the remaining 16 teams go to two regional sites, not four, and one of them is in...Albany, where the men’s Orange in 2003 won a regional and, well, you know the rest.

Absurd? Perhaps, but so is Portland getting into the Dance as West Coast Conference champions by beating Gonzaga, the same Zags who beat the Pilots by 50 (!) a couple of weeks earlier.

Portland is just one of many great mid-major teams out to steal our hearts, everyone from South Dakota State to Presbyterian, the talent of the game more spread out than ever and

more shockers possible as a result.

Put simply, the women’s game is brimming with the star power and charisma the men’s game has lost, some of it stemming from early departures to the NBA and the transfer portal, some of it the result of football-driven conference realignment smashing up old rivalries coast to coast.

Increased attention will bring increased scrutiny, too. Officiating, in particular, will really get the microscope – how much leeway will big stars and brand-name teams get? Such issues were once trivial. Now they’re central – no one wants a repeat of the 2023 title game where foul trouble defined it more than LSU or Iowa.

Never in its four decade-plus history has there been an NCAA women’s tournament more anticipated. Is South Carolina’s perfection confirmed, or denied? Does Caitlin Clark author the perfect ending to her college odyssey?

These queries, and dozens of others, await answers over the next few weeks, all the way to Cleveland on April 7. All of us can’t wait to get it going.

Golf 101: Glossery of terms… For beginners and casual

When I was a student at Ithaca College in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department, one of the rst assignments my professors gave me was to memorize “all” of the words and terms at the end of our textbooks called the Glossary of Terms. It included words and terms that were either, “newly introduced, uncommon or specialized” to the subject we were studying. ey did this because of how necessary and important the terms would be to the learning process and the direct correlation to having success taking exams. Unfortunately, I don’t recall anyone telling me to memorize the Glossary of Terms at the end of any book on the subject of golf when I decided to take up the game. Do you recall anyone telling you?

Your assignment, therefore, should you choose to accept it, is to refresh your knowledge of the Glossary of Terms for Golf and then send this article to at least three people you know who are “beginners” to the game of golf (within the last 12 months) or “casual” golfers (at least 24 months). Maybe they will memorize most of the terms so they can enjoy the game more and understand the golf analysts on television when they describe tournament play, rules, scoring, etc.. Don’t assume beginners and casual golfers know these basic terms. If fact, I’ll bet “recreational” golfers (played at least 3-5 years or more), don’t know all of the terms.

Many thanks to GolfQuestions.org

Chittenango’s Moesch to transfer to prep school

Having climbed to the top of the Chittenango boys basketball scoring ranks by the end of

Moesch announced last week that he will transfer to Boston’s Cushing Academy, where he will be able to reclassify himself into the Class of 2026 for potential colleges interested in him. In his three years with the Chittenango varsity program,

giving away specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing. These “eclipse glasses” were provided by the Science-Technology Activities & Resources for Libraries Network (STAR Net) through its Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries program.

According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the sun’s light in some areas. Because the moon does not orbit in the exact same plane as the sun and Earth do, solar eclipses only happen occasionally.

On April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the continental United States, and Canada.

During a total solar eclipse, the moon completely blocks the face of the sun while it passes between the sun and Earth. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people standing in the “path of totality” may see the sun’s corona, or outer atmosphere, shining out around the moon. The corona is usually obscured by the bright face of the sun.

NASA’s “2024 Total Solar Eclipse” webpage says the total solar eclipse will be visible along a narrow track stretch -

all Moesch did was help the Bears, in 2021-22, win its first Section III championship since 1977 and have an overall record of 57-13 with two other trips to the sectional semifinals. Individually, Moesch peaked in the 2023-24 season, averaging more than 36 points per game,

ing from Texas to Maine on April 8. A partial solar eclipse will be visible throughout all 48 states of the contiguous US. It will be the last total solar eclipse visible from the contiguous US until 2044.

“Eclipses spark a sense of wonder and inspire us to be curious, engaged, and seek answers, which makes the upcoming solar eclipse the perfect opportunity to connect with our community and provide learning opportunities through programming,” said CPL Interim Director Elisha Davies. “Thanks to STAR Net, we’ve been given the tools — solar glasses — and training to celebrate this rare celestial event.”

March 19 eclipse presentation

On March 19, local amateur astronomer Dr. Kamal Jabbour will present “Eclipses” at 6 p.m. in the CPL Community Room.

Jabbour is an astronomer at the Pompey Observatory in Pompey, NY; a member of the Syracuse Astronomical Society (SAS); and a volunteer at Rice Creek Observatory in Oswego.

Jabbour said his fascination with the moon started with the Apollo 11 landing on July 20, 1969.

He dove into astronomy and astrophotography in retirement, following a 40-year engineering career.

“I have been interested in astronomy since childhood and built my own telescope at age 15,” he said. “I earned

including a 55-point showing against Jamesville-DeWitt in December. Though Chittenango lost in the sectional Class B semifinals to Westhill, Moesch still managed to pass Brandon Corp as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1,686 points.

a Ph.D. in electrical engineering that gave me the technical foundation for astrophotography.”

Jabbour has been a member of the SAS for about two years.

“The SAS is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) organization that brings together amateur astronomers to observe visually and image electronically the solar system and deep sky objects, such as galaxies and nebulae,” Jabbour said.

The SAS also holds free public observing nights at its Darling Hill Observatory in the hamlet of Vesper in Tully, NY. For more information, visit Syracuse-astro.org.

During his upcoming presentation, Jabbour will use slides prepared by Dr. Robert Ostrander, another member of the SAS, to illustrate what will occur on April 8.

According to Jabbour, Cazenovia lies outside the eclipse’s narrow path of totality.

“It will get a bit darker, but [there won’t be] totality,” he said.

Weather permitting, people can watch the eclipse live on Jabbour’s astronomy channel, YouTube.com/@ PompeyObservator y, which also showcases over 1,800 videos of the sun, moon, stars, planets, galaxies, nebulae, comets, and space stations captured by his telescopes.

plorers: All About the Solar Eclipse” on March 21, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the community room.

Children ages 5-9 are invited to join CPL Youth Services Assistant Debora Millson to learn about the upcoming solar eclipse through books, science, and art. Participants will have the opportunity to create cereal box eclipse viewers that will enable them to safely view the April 8 eclipse indirectly by looking at a projected image of the sun.

April 8 eclipse viewing party

The Cazenovia Public Library, Lorenzo State Historic Site, and the New Woodstock Free Library are teaming up to host an eclipse viewing party on April 8 starting at 1:30 p.m. on the Lorenzo lawn.

The New Woodstock Free Library will be helping to provide refreshments, games, and activities, as well as additional staffing support.

According to CPL Youth Services Coordinator Jenna Wright, CPL has 1,500 eclipse glasses to give away at the viewing party. A limited number of glasses will also be available at the library beginning March 25 on a firstcome-first-served basis with a limit of two glasses per household.
