Children’s author to join in celebration

This spring, H. Grey Supply Co. in Cazenovia is inviting families into the magical world of Pufftown with a “Grumbalina”themed event featuring children’s book author and brand creator Karina Frederiks.

Scheduled for Saturday, April 1, at 10 a.m., the event will give kids the chance to meet Frederiks and a couple of the fairies of Pufftown, check out the store’s Grumbalina books and 90sinspired “throw-back” toys, and sample Grumbalina-inspired handcrafted beverages and baked goods.

Grumbalina is an eightbook series designed to get kids hooked on reading. The books are heavily illustrated with bright, colorful pictures on every page to draw in pre-readers and beginner independent readers.

According to Frederiks, who

is based in the Netherlands, her stories transport children to a fun and adventurous world while teaching subtle and valuable lessons along the way.

“Set in the clouds, Pufftown is a world of spells and magic, but problems cannot be easily solved,” Frederiks said. “Young fairies must navigate life in middle school while facing relatable everyday problems like jealousy, loneliness, sibling rivalry, and laziness. . . Grumbalina lives in the only grey cloud in the sky. She struggles with her spells at school and has the lowest-level wand a fairy can carry. School is a struggle because nobody wants to be friends with a fairy who cannot perform her spells. Perfect Polly, Grumbalina’s older sister, is the best fairy in the sky; she carries the golden wand and wins the golden star each day at school. This only makes Grumbalina feel worse. Schools get highway garage, EV charging feasibility study grant

Cazenovia Central School District (CCSD) was recently awarded $25,000 in state funding to support a shared highway garage and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure feasibility study.

The funding, which was awarded through the Local Government Efficiency Grant program (LGEG), will be used by the school district, the Towns of Nelson and Cazenovia, and the Village of Cazenovia to undertake a $50,000 study to investigate opportunities to consolidate bus and highway garage infrastructure and resources.

The study will also examine the feasibility of shared EV charging infrastructure.

The grant requires a minimum local match of $25,000. The district match is $15,625, and the three municipalities are each contributing $3,125.

The annual competitive LGEG provides funding to counties and municipalities across the state to fund projects that reduce government costs through consolidations, shared services, or internal efficiencies.

“We are trying to be as friendly to our taxpayers as possible,” said CCSD Superintendent Christopher DiFulvio.

The grant application was prepared on behalf of CCSD by the Cazenovia Area Community Development Association (CACDA) last July.

According to DiFulvio, CCSD served as the official applicant at the suggestion of CACDA Executive Director Lauren Lines, who reached out about the program and suggested that the district might qualify.

“School districts and governments across the state will all need to invest in infrastructure to allow for electric charging,” said Lines. “In small rural areas, it may be more efficient to share resources rather than replicate the same very expensive infrastructure in each municipality. If the study finds there are efficiencies, this model could be replicated in other parts of the state.”

According to Lines, the LGEG is a reimbursement program.

“We’ll need to hire a consultant, conduct the study, and then get reimbursed,” she said.

This spring, the former Old and Everlasting shop on Ballina Road in Cazenovia will be brought back to life as The Housewren, a new business offering antique and restored furniture alongside curated gifts and home decor.

Instead of maintaining regular retail hours, owners Anya Woods O’Neill and Adam O’Neill are looking forward to holding occasional open houses/sales and doing most of their business online.

“Adam and I have always loved renovating and working on old things, so last summer I started dabbling in refinishing old furniture,” said Woods O’Neill. “I sold a couple of pieces online and decided it would be great to turn the shop into a little showroom so that anyone local who wanted to see a piece before they committed could pop in and take a look. From there, I thought it would be great to open the shop perhaps three to four times a year for pop-up-type events where people could browse not only [furniture but also] a curated selection of home goods — décor like vases, florals, bas-

kets, throw blankets and pillows, etc.”

The Housewren’s first pop-up is scheduled for Mother’s Day weekend. The shop will be open Friday, May 12 through Sunday, May 14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Woods O’Neill said her hope is that people will stop by to pick up a Mother’s Day gift, check out the new shop, and enjoy a beautiful spring day in the country.

According to Woods O’Neill, the initial sale, which will feature a lot of gardening and spring-themed items, will be followed by a fall event with cozier items and seasonal décor, and then a holiday pop-up.

“That’s the plan as long as this first one is a success,” she said.

Marianne and Rob Barry, the property’s former owners, opened Old and Everlasting in 1988 and expanded the original building in 1996. Filled with home goods, antiques, gifts, and women’s clothing and accessories, the shop was a popular and well-known local attraction for nearly three decades.

In 2018, after closing the business, the Barrys sold their 19th-century farmhouse, barn, and shop to Woods O’Neill and O’Neill.

Since purchasing the property, the couple

has been eager to breathe new life into the shop and continue the legacy of its previous owners.

In April 2019, Woods O’Neill approached the Town of Cazenovia Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) to express her desire to reopen a retail store in the space.

The ZBA determined that due to the expiration of the property’s special use permit, the building was no longer authorized for retail.

The board referred to retail as a “nonconforming use,” a use that was allowed under zoning regulations at the time it was established but that is no longer permitted under current regulations. According to the town code, legal nonconforming status is lost when the active operation of the nonconforming use is discontinued for a period of one calendar year. Any subsequent use of the structure must comply with the district’s existing use regulations.

By the time Woods O’Neill and O’Neill purchased the property, Old and Everlasting had been closed for more than a year and the special use permit had expired.

Woods O’Neill said that since the ZBA

Lines added that, as of March 21, the study had not yet begun. Before action can be taken, the district must receive a grant contract from the Department of State, which administers the LGEG.

CCSD plans to continue its investigation into options for a new district-only bus garage/transportation facility while the feasibility study is ongoing, according to DiFulvio.

“We have to look at both,” he said.

CCSD was one of seven awardees that were selected among 20 applicants for the 2022 LGEG funding. Applications were submitted through the state’s Consolidated Funding Application process and graded on various criteria, including return on investment to taxpayers, project scale, scope, municipal readiness, public engagement, work plan and budget detail.

The award recipients were announced in a March 16 press release from Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office.

“Having served in local government for over a decade, I know what localities need to reduce costs and get projects over the finish line,” Hochul said in the press release. “These grants will help streamline local government projects and services — better serving New Yorkers by staying lean and efficient, while creating more prosperous communities across the state for years to come.”

Young actor to make Syracuse Stage debut

Bobby McDowell, a fifth grader at Cazenovia Middle School, will make his Syracuse Stage debut this spring in the upcoming production of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town.”

McDowell, 11, has been cast in the role of Wally Webb, the little brother of Emily Webb, one of the show’s main characters.

In the third act of the play, Wally appears among a group of “dead souls,” having died young as the result of a ruptured appendix on a Boy Scout trip.

McDowell has previously performed in the Syracuse Children’s Theater’s “The Lion King JR.,” the Fayetteville Recreation Program’s “Newsies JR.,”

and plays at St. James Roman Catholic Church in Cazenovia.

“I became interested in theater when I watched my older cousins in plays and musicals and it inspired me,” said McDowell.

The young actor auditioned for “Our Town” on Jan. 28, 2023.

“I was sick and not feeling well that day, but I wanted to push through and try my best,” McDowell recalled. “I went up the stairs for the audition and went into the room where I said my lines in front of two people in the room and the director over Zoom.”

McDowell found out he landed the role the following week when he got home from school.

“It was so exciting,” he said. “I couldn’t even be-

lieve it at first.”

McDowell is one of six Central New York children who will be performing in Syracuse Stage’s “Our Town.” Each of their roles is double cast, so McDowell will be playing Wally in half of the shows.

The production will also feature Syracuse-based stage, television, and film actor Jim True-Frost, who will play the seminal role of the Stage Manager. He is most known for his portrayal of Roland “Prez” Pryzbylewski in all five seasons of the HBO series “The Wire,” James Woodrow in HBO’s “Treme,” and film roles such as David Bailey in “Cameron Crowe’s “Singles.”

According to McDowell, rehearsals started at the beginning of March and have

been held almost every day, except Mondays.

“I have loved the experience of being able to learn more about acting and theater from Director Bob Hupp and the rest of the cast and crew,” McDowell said.

Wilder described his timeless drama, “Our Town,” as, “an attempt to find value above all price for the smallest events in our daily life.”

The play tells the story of the fictional small town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, at the turn of the 20th century through the everyday lives of its citizens.

“Wilder’s enduring classic asks us to stop and ponder what truly matters, and to consider that for a great many of us the answers will be the same,” the Syracuse Stage website states.

“Our Town” runs March 29 through April 16 at Syracuse Stage. McDowell will perform in the evening preview on

Poison prevention

According to poisonhelp.hrsa.gov, in 1961, Congress established National Poison Prevention Week to raise awareness, reduce unintentional poisonings, and promote poison prevention.

The website goes on to say that this effort is sponsored by the National Poison Prevention Week Council. Each year, the council holds a children’s artwork contest to raise awareness about poisons. Additionally, poison centers across the country conduct activities to raise awareness of the dangers of poisoning.

While this week is officially acknowledged as the third week in March, it is an issue that is not limited to just a week and is well worth being aware of year round.

President Joe Biden shared some statistics in his proclamation in March.

Biden said each year, more than 2 million poisoning cases are reported in the United States — some of which are tragically fatal, but many of which are preventable.

While we have made great strides in the decades since National Poison Prevention Week was first observed 60 years ago — including a decline in unintentional poisoning — poisoning remains a risk, especially for children and older Americans. During National Poison Prevention Week, we raise awareness about the dangers posed by poisonous substances, precautions people can take to prevent an incident, and how to respond in a poison emergency, Biden said.

His proclamation said each year, an average of 31 children die from unintended poisonings at home, and an estimated 75,000 children under the age of five end up in hospital emergency departments from poisoning. Approximately 85 percent of unintentional poisonings take place in the home where medicines and harmful chemicals are stored.

The president said to help prevent children from unintentionally ingesting poisonous household products, it is important to keep these products out of their sight and beyond their reach.

Items such as hand sanitizer, laundry detergent, medications, coin cell batteries, cleaning products, and liquid nicotine should be stored in child-resistant packaging.

Medications should be safely secured, and if unused, properly discarded. For elderly Americans it is important that household products are secured in their original packaging and that medications are clearly labeled to avoid accidental ingestion or the mistaking of medications, Biden said.

The disposal of prescription and other medications is an area that can of particular concern.

While it is recommended that medications be taken until finished unless otherwise advised by a medical professional, it is not uncommon for medications to be leftover and it is difficult to know what to do with these as they should not simply be thrown out of washed down the drain.

In some communities police stations or other location have drop boxes that allow for medications and other substances to be dropped off anonymously.

In some instances pharmacies like Kinney Drugs have established disposal locations.

Coinciding with prevention week, Kinney announced it will offer kiosks to dispose of unneeded medications, including leftover and expired medications.

The kiosks accept prescription and over-the-counter medications for both humans and pets, including controlled substances.

The kiosks are not for disposal of sharps/needles (including EpiPens), medical/biohazardous waste, regular or hazardous household trash, or personal care products.

The president went on to say healthcare professionals work around the clock addressing poisonings and he said that if anyone suspects a poisoning to call the Poison Control Help line at 800-222-1222.

For more information, go to poisonhelp.hrsa.gov.

Biden said raising awareness if crucial to saving lives and these resources can help people learn more about what they can do to keep themselves and others safe.

We moved into what has become our only home in 1968. It didn’t take much to move us in. We had a bedframe and two twin size mattresses, a hand-crafted sofa that weighed more than my car, a bean bag chair, one floor lamp, a dining room table and chairs, one medium sized pot and a frying pan … and our wedding album. The house was a fixer-upper but we were young and willing to do the work.

We’d only been married for a little over a year and, so, we also brought the wedding gifts which included two sets of bath towels, one from my mother and one from my mother-in-law, four matching tea towels, three pot holders that my mom made, a spice rack and a set of white dishes that I bought at Grants. There were other gifts like silver trays, candlestick holders and tablecloths, but these were rarely used. Most reside where we put them in 1968.

Over the years we repaired, painted, added a family room and expanded the exquisitely tiny bathroom on the second floor and settled in to fill the house with the stuff of living. Two rooms became nurseries and the front of the refrigerator became the bulletin board of our lives.

Now, there is much more furniture, some of it that looks like furniture. Every surface is covered with photos and bookcases overflow with albums of photos chronicling our family’s growth as

well as lots of books. Truth be told, there are boxes of similar photos stashed in the attic that have been replaced by more current versions of the same people. Two drawers in the Hoosier are also filled with photographs.

And clothes …there are so many, some that reflect my spouse’s changing taste and those that are mine, most of which I no longer wear because I am no longer gainfully employed. Funny, I still find that there is not enough day to finish what I want to get done.

Don’t ask about the cellar or the attic. Please.

So, it was only this morning, as I was folding some rather ragged tea towels when I noticed that I no longer had any of said towels that could be hung over the handle of the oven without some form of housekeeping shame. Upstairs the bath towels sang the same song. I have one bath towel remaining from the ones that my mom gave us which I keep for sentimental reasons. The remaining towels could justifiably be donated to the vet or an animal rescue. I certainly could use a set of pots that didn’t scorch and an oven where I can bake on more than the bottom two shelves.

But I am more past that future and one thinks of what will happen when it comes time for our children to survey the result of more than 50 years of living in one house and figure out what to do next.

I should get rid of some stuff.

But … I would also like some new things, too. A set of tea towels

The Friendship Inn dining hall is located in the lower level of the building at 21 Lincklaen St. shared by Summit Church and Cazenovia United Methodist Church.

Open to anyone and everyone, the non-profit meal service has provided grub such as pork chops, ziti coated in meat sauce, and hot dogs with sides of vegetables and fresh garden salads.

“You get a well-rounded meal,” said Dan Schallmo, the senior pastor for Summit Church. “There’s also a synergy between our churches, and we enjoy each other’s company. With the COVID restrictions essentially being lifted now too, we feel comfortable doing the inperson service again.”

The collaborative initiative led by the combined ministries has also welcomed helping hands from the greater community, whether it be from local businesses, the town rotary club, other churches, or random groups of volunteers who help to prepare and serve the meals. Moore calls the assistance received over the years a “blessing.”

Priceless.

Yes, I should be deconstructing what has accumulated but even at this advanced age, I would like some new things … a freshening of mornings and days to enliven what remains. Because the Friendship Inn has regularly relied on Cazenovia College’s food service personnel for excess food, from pans of corn to frozen shrimp scampi, not to mention the support of administrators, faculty members and students through the semesters, Schallmo said the permanent closure of the institution after the current academic year will be a “deep loss.”

“It’s a shock wave that’s still rippling through our community,” he said. “We’ve enjoyed a good partnership and close association with them, so that’s going to be a big dent in our food supply.”

Part of what makes the arrival of Major League Baseball such a harbinger of warmer days ahead is the sheer tumult of the off-season, a barrage of news, trades, signings and other controversies.

Add to it rules changes and schedule changes that delights some and offends others….and you’ve got a 2023 season that will feel particularly welcome.

Of course, nothing might top how the World Baseball Classic ended, one Angels megastar (Shohei Ohtani) striking out another (Mike Trout) to give Japan the title…try matching that kind of drama in the fall.

The Angels themselves have a steep climb in the AL West. The champs in Houston haven’t shown any signs of drop-off and, even if the Astros did, Seattle, led by the young and amazing Julio Rodriguez, is in great position to take over.

Oh, and Texas signed the best pitcher on the planet, Jacob de Grom, the Rangers

Random Thoughts

showing that it’s serious to turn a corner. All that Oakland can look forward to is young players developing and endless questions about Vegas.

Not that fans around here pay much attention. Most ride or die with the Yankees or Red Sox, though it’s the Pinstripes that (again) have outsized expectations and the Red Sox with much to improve after a last-place 2022.

More interesting in the AL East is whether Baltimore, finally out of its doldrums, can build upon last season’s surprising success. Not easy, since Toronto remains powerful at the plate and Tampa Bay does what the Rays always do, develop young talent and win without a budget or an actual ballpark.

Having risen to the top of the AL Central well ahead of schedule, Cleveland only needs consistent plate production

to dream of ending a 75-year World Series title drought.

Minnesota, having signed Carlos Correa after all, is best equipped to dethrone the Guardians because the White Sox, otherwise ambitious, are racked with early injury concerns. What’s more, Kansas City and Detroit are deep into rebuilds, so for either of them 70 wins is progress and anything more is a bonus.

All the spending by the Mets and Phillies in the NL East doesn’t change the fact that Atlanta, through its timely signings and smart long-term contracts to its core players, is best equipped to win for a while.

Philadelphia was feeling quite good until Rhys Hoskins tore his ACL. The Mets…. well, even its own fans will not believe them until they actually win big when it counts most. Staring at all this largesse, Miami remains committed to its youth and Washington has torn everything down, making 2019 seem like a lifetime ago.

With names like Cody Bell-

inger and Marcus Stroman on hand, the Cubs are serious again, making the NL Central a three-team story.

St. Louis moves on from legends but still has Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado on hand, while Milwaukee again leans on its strong pitching. Many like what Cincinnati is constructing but know the Reds are, at best two years away, something Pittsburgh has said for far too long now to really trust.

Could it be that (gasp) the Dodgers are vulnerable in the NL West? L.A. didn’t corner the market as usual, while San Diego is downright scary if Manny Machado, Juan Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. are in the same lineup.

Having just missed out on the likes of Aaron Judge, San Francisco might find itself behind an Arizona side doing most things right to be 2023’s sleeper. Colorado is just sleeping and can’t do much about mile-high altitude that renders all attempts to build a pitching

Whatever the merits of the different sides presented in the communications on this question, our readers generally will be pleased that the Mill Street Dam is to be re-built.

The following proceedings of the Canal Board, taken March 19, are probably to be considered final settlement of the matter.

Mr. Taylor, from the committee to whom was referred the matter relating to proper location for the proposed dam at Cazenovia across from the outlet of Cazenovia Lake and Erieville Reservior, submitted a report, of which the following is the conclusion.

“After a careful examination of all the records pertaining to this subject, together with the visit at the location, the committee is of the opinion that the State is equitably bound and perhaps legally to construct the proposed dam on the old site.”

About 40 parents and guardians were summoned before the school board Friday evening to explain unexcused absences of their children from the Union school. About 20 responded.

Professor Clements chairman of the board explained the rigid provisions of the compulsory education law and stated that the board was compelled to see that the provisions were closely lived up to, under penalty of losing the public money for the district.

Teachers are not allowed to accept any excuses which do not state the matter of illness in plain words.

“John was necessarily detained” does not pass now. Ignorance of that fact seemed to have been responsible for most of the unexcused absences that have caused that board so much worriment.

During the coming season the town of Cazenovia

will give more attention to its dirt roads than it has before in many years.

A Fordson tractor and a small leaning wheel scraper have been purchased for use on dirt roads and Charles Cady has been engaged to have the outfit in charge.

He, of course, will have an assistant as two men are required, one to run the tractor, and the other to operate the scraper.

By employing a separate gang and outfit for dirt roads, construction and maintenance of macadem, and repair of dirt roads will not interfere with each other, as each will be carried independent of the other.

There are 108 miles of highway in the township, something like 75 of which are dirt roads.

Mr. Cady will start work just as soon as the weather permits.

The Cazenovia General Committee pointed by the Cazenovia Village Board to promote Cazenovia as a home for the proposed National Football Shrine and Hall of Fame, has organized by electing Mayor Donald Mansfield chairman, Supervisor Malcolm Norton vice chairman, and Kenneth Webber secretary-treasurer. \ The committee has voted to publish a 48-page illustrated brochure of Cazenovia.

Not only will it present Cazenovia’s charm and advantages as a home for the shrine but (irrespective as to whether or not the shrine ever comes to Cazenovia) it will be of great value publicizing our community’s beauty and charm to tourists and others who may like to stop off here for a night or two or a meal while traveling Route 20.

Cazenovia bases its claim for the home for the shrine on the historic fact that Gerrit Smith Miller, football’s founder, was born here in 1845, on Cazenovia’s charm and beauty and on its strategic location on transcontinental Route 20.

staff futile.

Everything this season will happen quicker, something baseball sorely needs. Less wasted time, more action, or at least that’s the hope among MLB’s power brokers who saw these changes work well in the minor leagues.

Then who makes it out and ends up in the Fall Classic?

Having got close and stayed hungry, the Padres are ready to rule the National League if the Braves don’t keep them from it. Maybe Houston slips enough so that the Yankees actually return to the top of the American League.

But the most fun might be a San Diego-Seattle World Series. All that young talent, all that emotion and energy from two cities and franchises desperate to finally climb to the summit. A fan can dream, anyway. Which never changes.

importance that the charm, character and quality of Cazenovia is preserved and enhanced now and for generations to come. I am also forever indebted to my alma mater Nazareth College. My four years there were formative and gave me confidence, direction and a launching pad for positions of leadership.

I will spend the next few months communicating with residents and businesses to best understand their concerns and desires for our community. I welcome the opportunity to speak or meet with any residents, businesses or neighborhoods so that their voices are heard and we can work together in a non-partisan, non-political way to preserve and protect Cazenovia. Found objects

To the editor:

In her column on decluttering her house (an issue I struggle with myself!) Ann Ferro mentions “the other side of a pair of lost earrings” as something she needs to get rid of. I would imagine there are a lot of people that have those, and probably a lot of people just throw them in the trash. As an artist who works with found objects, I would love to get my hands on these little treasures, to incorporate in my artwork.

I suspect my husband wouldn’t like it so much, since I already have way too many found objects, but if Mrs. Ferro can “not tell” her husband about getting rid of some of his mugs, maybe I can “not tell” my husband about acquiring some of these single earrings. LOL.

Paul D. Manion, 82 retired professor

Paul D. Manion, 82, of Cazenovia, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2023 at Upstate University Hospital.

He was born March 30, 1940 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Donald and Beunna Manion.

Paul was a graduate of Hopkins High School in Hopkins, Minnesota and furthered his education at the University of Minnesota where he earned his bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees in Forestry. Paul was a professor of Forest Pathology at SUNY ESF for 36 years until his retirement in 2002.

Upon his retirement he volunteered at CAVAC as a driver, dispatcher and EMT. Paul enjoyed everything about wood, from planting to cutting, sawmilling, fine woodworking, and firewood.

However, family ski trips were also special. Two weeks before his death, he skied in Vermont with his two sons, and two grandchil-

Hugh C. Humphreys, 88 Judge, historian, artist

The Honorable Hugh C. Humphreys died at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx on February 26, 2023, near Fitch Sanitarium, where he was born on June 11, 1934. He was 88 years old. A Renaissance man, Hugh loved the law, books, art, music and history. Known for his humor and quick wit, he delighted in the laughter of friends and family.

Judge Humphreys spent his formative years in Ramsey, NJ. He attended Don Bosco Prep High School, where Polish Salesian priests and brothers taught him the power of words and instilled in him a lifelong love of learning. His fellow classmates, including refugees who emigrated to the United States after surviving the traumas and tragedies of World War II, had a deep impact on him and his belief in serving others.

Hugh graduated from Villanova University in 1955, served in the U.S. Navy aboard a destroyer in the Atlantic Fleet and graduated from Columbia Law School in 1961. While at Columbia, Hugh worked for legal scholar, Julius Goebel, Jr., conducting extensive research of Alexander Hamilton’s archives in both New York and Washington DC. After

is a coming-of-age tale and follows Grumbalina and her pursuit to make friends and work hard to improve her magic.”

Inspired by a love of writing and storytelling, Frederiks, who majored in English literature and spent a summer at Oxford University reading Shakespeare, started working on Grumbalina in university almost a decade ago.

“I was always working on it in the background of my life, but in the last five years, [I] began to focus a lot of my time on developing the brand because I saw a great need to encourage children to find a love for reading early and step away from so much screen time,” Frederiks said.

According to the author, her books are designed to be read aloud at bedtime or read by children independently.

“The premise behind the Grumbalina brand is to encourage creativity and imagination in this age of technology,” she said. “Studies have proven that creative and imaginative play is essential during childhood, and I believe that by developing independent readers in early childhood, this love for reading can grow and be beneficial throughout life.”

Co-owned by Travis Barr and Alex Altomonte, H. Grey Supply Co. is a modern-day general store and outfitter that is focused on celebrating inclusivity, positivity, and community and featuring small-batch makers and independent brands from across the US.

dren. In Paul’s words:

“Life was good!”

He is survived by his two sons, William P. (Dr. Lynne) Manion, P.E. of Hampden, Maine and Edward T. (Alison) Manion of Westminster, MA; a very close family friend, Beth Ryan, who took care of Paul and Nancy like a daughter, his brother Jan David “JD” Manion of Gainesville, FL; four grandchildren, Dr. Bradie N. (Andrew) Bishop M.D., Dacie J. (Chris Gilman) Manion, P.E., Wilder and Quinn; four great-grandchildren, Rosie Lynne, Maxwell, Sylvie and James. Paul was predeceased by his loving wife, Nancy, in 2020.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, March 31, 2023, at Michael E. Brown Funeral Services, 2333 Fenner Road in Cazenovia. Contributions in Paul’s memory may be made to CAVAC, 106 Nelson St., Cazenovia, NY 13035. Condolences for the Manion family may be left at michaelebrownfuneralservices.com.

law school, Hugh became an associate at Donovan, Leisure, Newton and Irvine where he practiced for two years before becoming an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York Criminal Division under Robert Morgenthau.

After leaving the United States Attorney’s office, Hugh and his wife, Liz, moved their growing family to Cazenovia, where he worked as an associate at Nottingham and Carroll in Syracuse, before opening his own firm in Hamilton, N.Y. Following years of private practice, Hugh was elected to serve as a Madison County Court Judge in Wampsville, N.Y., where he presided for 17 years over criminal, probate and family court cases until retiring in 2001. After retirement, he continued to work in the New York state legal system, on a pro bono basis, for the Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York. In addition, for over three decades, Hugh was an adjunct professor at Syracuse University College of Law where he taught courses in evidence,

Barr was introduced to the Grumbalina books just before the holidays by his mother, who discovered the series on Instagram.

Barr recalled that he ordered a few of the books, magic wands, and plush dolls as Christmas gifts for his nieces and was impressed by the fun stories, the cute illustrations by Dan Abdo, and the fact that the entire project is done by an independent creator and author.

“We love people and products that enhance joy on [a day-to-day basis, because] sometimes the day-to-day can feel pretty heavy,” said Barr.

“We are curators of things that can take your focus from that heaviness to all the good that life has to offer. Grumbalina does that through the fun stories, colorful imagery, and the togetherness that reading these books with children brings.”

Barr added that he was particularly struck by how Frederiks incorporates inclusivity into her stories.

“Most stories about inclusiveness seem to be about characters being made fun of for what makes them different,” he said. “In the Grumbalina books, each character is made up of their own unique qualities and backgrounds, and they just are who they are. The stories appreciate each character for who they are without having to point out how they are each different. It feels refreshing to have characters that are so different from each other existing together and each fitting a piece of the puzzle that makes up their world. Living in Cazenovia can feel like being in a bubble, and we like our events at H.

Jean M. Yorton, 97 retired from Cazenovia Central Schools

Jean M. Yorton, 97, of Cazenovia (1946-2014) died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2023, at Samaritan Summit Village in Watertown. She retired from Cazenovia Central Schools as a bookkeeper/accountant, with past careers as a bookkeeper at Key Bank and Marine Midland Bank.

She was born in the town of Cazenovia and graduated from Canastota High School in 1943. She married Charles Yorton in 1944, and they celebrated nearly 70 years of marriage. They spent two weeks in Hawaii for their 50th wedding anniversary. Jean was an accomplished seamstress and she enjoyed many craft activities. She was a big supporter of Charles and his activities with the Cazenovia Pony Club.

Surviving are her children, Carolyn (Peter) Crosby of Anchorage, AK, Stephen (Janice) Yorton of Carthage and Gayle (Mark) Sloan of Myrtle Beach, SC; her grandchildren Eliz-

trial practice, and law and literature.

The family farmhouse in Hamilton, surrounded by rolling hills and pastures, won and held Hugh’s heart for all the years of his life, as did the village of Hamilton and the people of his community. Over the years, passers-by might find him walking one of his many dogs along the Chenango Canal or cross-country skiing in the hills behind his home.

Hugh loved the snowy winters of Central New York and its bucolic landscape, often the subject of his paintings.

Hugh was an avid writer of short stories and plays. His extensive research on the history of the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist movement in Central New York led him to create numerous works including the Madison County Historical Society’s publication “Agitate! Agitate! Agitate! The Great Fugitive Slave Law Convention and its Rare Daguerreotype” and a scholarly monograph and play “Oh Freedom!” which he brought to life on stage at the Earlville Opera House with the help of local actors and singers. Hugh was an ardent supporter for the development of the Peterboro Emancipation Day at the Gerrit Smith Estate and a founding member of the National Abolition Hall of Fame in Peterboro, NY, where today his large-scale painting “Come Join the Abolitionists” greets all who visit.

He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Eliz-

Barr reached out to Frederiks via social media about carrying her books, and the store started selling the Grumbalina brand in early January 2023.

“We are the first retailer in New York to carry Grumbalina, and we couldn’t be more excited to bring the world of Grumbalina and her Pufftown pals to Central New York,” said Barr.

According to Barr, H. Grey now carries the complete collection of Grumbalina books and products, including book five, “Grumbalina and the Great Storm,” which the owners were able to offer to customers prior to its official release date.

The store also carries magic wands just like Grumbalina’s, the sassy Grumbalina plushy, figurines of all the characters, and backpacks that come with special magic wand holders.

According to Barr, Grumbalina has developed a strong and growing local fan base.

“We recently had a boy come in with his mom [to pick] up their fourth Grumbalina book,” he said. “She shared with me that he is obsessed with Mitchy, one of the characters in the series, and has been trying to make a magic wand just like Mitchy’s out of clay. The kids and families that have fallen in love with Grumbalina are creative and imaginative, and these books fuel those things. Unity and connection are common themes in the world of

She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by Charles, and her sister, Ruth Lucas.

Calling hours are Thursday, April 13, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with services to follow at Michael E. Brown Funeral Services, 2333 Fenner Road in Cazenovia. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Hugh was predeceased by his brother, Chris, and nephews, CJ and Matthew and niece, Tara.

The Humphreys family would like to express a sincere debt of gratitude to the staff at St. John’s Hospital, Yonkers, N.Y., and Calvary Hospital, Bronx, N.Y. Hugh will be laid to rest at the Welsh Church in Nelson, N.Y., where the hymns he so loved will always be near and where his family and friends can join in lifting their voices to his memory. A celebration of his life will be held at the Welsh Church in the spring, details to follow.

Grumbalina, and those both create a feeling of being protected and supported, and I think that is something kids pick up on, especially today with there being such a disconnect between so many.”

Barr described inviting Frederiks to H. Grey’s Grubalina event as a “no-brainer.”

Frederiks was equally as eager to accept the invitation.

“[Travis] is so enthusiastic about the Grumbalina mission, and we love H. Grey Supply Co.,” Frederiks said. “I believe that the store is a great fit for Grumbalina because at the heart of both of our brands are kindness and inclusion for all.”

Frederiks added that she loves interacting with her young readers and is looking forward to meeting Barr in person.

“He is such a vibrant personality,” she said. “Additionally, the Grumbalina team all believe that he looks and acts like a character from Pufftown.”
