State police announce plans for Caz College

The New York State Police officially entered into an agreement with Cazenovia College to lease a large portion of the college campus for use as its new NYS Police Basic School Auxiliary Academy that will run concurrently with the NYS Police Training Academy in Albany.

The two-year lease begins Aug. 1, 2023, and includes the buildings that make up the main college campus, as well as the athletic center.

According to a July 19 press release from the Cazenovia College Office of Communications, a separate management company will be contracted to maintain the campus buildings and grounds and operate the dining facility. To provide these services, the company will be hiring staff, including current and former Cazenovia College employees.

Additional information regarding employment opportunities will be available soon, the press release said.

“We are pleased that we were able to arrange the lease with the state police and avoid having the campus vacant for a period of time,” said Kenneth Gardiner,

chair of the Cazenovia College Board of Trustees, in the press release. “The fact that they are hiring several of our employees is an added bonus. On behalf of the board of trustees, I’d like to express our appreciation to Cazenovia College President David Bergh and his leadership team who worked diligently the past weeks and months to make this happen.”

The first class at the Cazenovia auxiliary academy is slated to start in mid-October 2023.

In the press release, Village of Cazenovia Mayor Kurt Wheeler welcomed the NYS Police to the Cazenovia community.

“This is a positive step in the repurposing of the college campus for ongoing educational and training use while at the same time providing a two-year window for further exploration of a more permanent transition of the campus at the heart of our village,” Wheeler said.

According to a press release from Governor Kathy Hochul’s office, the auxiliary academy is part of the governor’s plan to fund an unprecedented number of Basic School classes.

Hochul secured more than $66 million in the Fiscal Year 2024 Enacted Budget to fund two ad-

ditional state police classes. The leased space at Cazenovia College can accommodate up to 275 recruits and 115 instructors. The firearms training and emergency vehicle operations courses will continue to be held at their present locations.

“With this additional auxiliary academy at Cazenovia College, we can help ensure that the New

York State Police is fully staffed with highly trained women and men to keep New Yorkers safe – a top priority for my administration,” Hochul said in the press release. “This expansion will also create opportunities for more candidates, which will support the state police’s mission to diversify and grow its ranks. We’re excited to welcome the academy’s

first class in October as they prepare to serve our communities.”

According to the governor’s office, the expansion will not only accelerate the rebuilding of the force and increase the number of NYS Troopers, but it will also allow the state police to increase the number of Community Stabilization Units around the

Town of Fenner turns 200, plans community-wide celebration

The Town of Fenner will mark its 200th anniversary with a community-wide celebration on Saturday, Aug. 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the town hall.

The family-friendly bicentennial event will include a food and ice cream truck; a petting zoo; a Civil War reenactment with two tents; and a display of town trucks, emergency management vehicles, and a SWAT truck for kids to get in and explore.

Parents can take advantage of the Operation Safe Child Card Program through the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. The program provides parents with an identification card for their child that includes up-to-date photographs, fingerprints, and detailed biographical information that can help law enforcement officials quickly respond in the event of the child’s disappearance.

Local businesses will have booths set up, and Wanderers

Rest Humane Association representatives will be on hand to talk about the pets they have available for adoption and to begin the screening/adoption process.

Attendees can learn about local history during a presentation on the history of the town and by stopping by a Madison County Historical Society booth featuring Fenner timelines, photos, and maps. Fenner merchandise will

also be available for sale, with all proceeds benefiting the restoration of the Fenner Community Church.

The milestone event is being organized by a group of around 10 individuals dedicated to celebrating their town and its history.

Bicentennial Planning Committee member Katy Pushlar said she decided to join the organizing effort because she and her husband, Adam, try to be as involved in the town as possible.

Pushlar currently sits on the Town of Fenner Zoning Board of Appeals and represents Fenner on the Madison County Republican Committee, and Adam serves on the Fenner Town Board.

“My husband’s family farm is on the border of Caz and Fenner,” Pushlar said. “We wanted to be close [because] Adam and his dad farmed together, so in 2003, we bought our first home in upper Fenner. In 2010, Adam and I bought the neighboring farm, ‘The old Stearns Farm,’ to expand our business. In 2020, we sold our home and bought a house in lower Fenner to be close to both farms. We decided to call Fenner home due to our love of agriculture, the unbeatable landscape, and the Fenner community. We are both graduates of Cazenovia, and we knew that Fenner is where we wanted to raise our children. . . To be a part of our beautiful town’s bicentennial celebration was really important. I’m working alongside some pretty great people to

feature of the local landscape and one of the earliest links to Fenner’s nineteenth-century heritage.

The church is located at 3122 Bingley Rd.

According to the Town of Fenner website, the building satisfies the National Register Criteria for qualifying as an intact, representative example of vernacular nineteenth-century ecclesiastical architecture. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

“The church retains a relatively high degree of integrity and enjoys a highly evocative rural setting,” the website states. “Constructed as a traditional New England meetinghouse in the Federal style, the church was enlarged in the 1870s in response to the sudden growth of the congregation, at which time it received an overlay of Second Empire-inspired decorative elements. The church is the finest example from a small number of extant architectural resources that chronicles the settlement and growth of this small Central New York agrarian crossroads during the nineteenth century.”

Throughout its history, the church has served a valuable role as a community meeting space for special events and ceremonies.

During the 1934 “Old Home Day” observance,

many former members of the church joined in a parade of horse-drawn vehicles and early automobiles. On Memorial Day 1948, veterans from Fenner were honored with the placement of a memorial plaque on a boulder on the east side of the church. Maple trees were also planted in an alignment signifying the four branches of the armed services.

Currently, the Fenner Community Church holds seasonal services, hosts weddings, and brings members of the community together through chicken dinners and election luncheons.

According to Town of Fenner Supervisor Dave Jones, the Fenner Community Church trustees are turning the historic building over to the town.

“The church needs repairs and there are more grant opportunities if the town owns it since it is on the National and State Historical Register,” Jones said. “Along with grants, we are also hoping for donations for repairs. Our vi-

sion is to have it [serve] as a community center/church.”

History of Fenner Madison County Historian Matthew Urtz stated that the history of Fenner, like much of Madison County, is tied to its agriculture and sense of community.

“The Haudenosaunee, specifically the Oneida Indian Nation, made this area their homeland hundreds of years ago, as shown by the archeological digs around what we know today as Nichols Pond,” Urtz said. “Many early settlers arrived from Rhode Island, and the name Fenner comes from former Rhode Island Governor James Fenner. The Town of Fenner was one of the places where sheep farming became prevalent, hence the name of Mutton Hill Road within the town. As the shift to dairy farming took hold, the hills of Fenner became home to many dairy farms; some of the farms that still exist today can trace their history to the nineteenth cen-

Young composers to premiere works, Cazenovia Counterpoint to conclude

On July 30, seven budding composers will premiere their new music during the Young Composers Corner (YCC) Concert at Cazenovia’s Lakeland Park pavilion at 4:30 p.m.

Now in its 15th year, the YCC is a free, five-day music composition workshop for middle and high school students from across Central New York.

The mentoring program is a cornerstone of the Cazenovia Counterpoint festival of the expressive arts, an annual monthlong celebration of artists in all disciplines.

During the YCC, students interested in or currently writing music get the chance to work with a professional composer to develop and refine their writing skills, to think and talk critically about music, and to develop a new piece of music in any style for the instruments available to them.

The program is led by Paul Leary, an associate professor and chair of the music department at SUNY Oswego, where he teaches electronic music, theory, composition, music business, and popular music.

This year’s YCC participants are Finn CarruthersColes, Alex McGlauglin, Nathan Schierer, Grant Gilham, Clark Durant, Che Richmond, and Jack Picciano.

The workshop ran from July 17-21 at the First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia.

“We spend part of each day listening and talking about music,” Leary said on July 19.

“I pick a piece that we listen to, then we discuss it. There’s often an element of music theory as well. They also have at least one hour a day for just breaking off into their own space to compose.”

According to Leary, the students wrote their compositions for saxophone, violin, cello, piano, clarinet, soprano voice, or a combination of those instruments.

Schierer, a rising junior at Cazenovia High School, participated in the YCC for the third time this year.

“I decided to participate in the program again this year because I feel like it’s a fun way for me to be creative in a way that I enjoy,” he said.

“Plus, as I found the program enjoyable the past two years, why not do it again?”

Last summer, he composed a piece for violin, cello, and piano titled “<Reminder to make a good title later>.”

“The piece I am composing this year doesn’t have a title yet, seeing as it’s still named ‘ycctest2’ in MuseScore,” Schierer said. “Although, when compared to my first year where the title was effectively a keysmash with no significance, it may end up staying that way. It’s being written for two cellos, and its inspiration comes from all the music I have listened to before. As a composer, I try to recreate the sounds I’ve heard from other composers that I enjoy, and each year I get closer to being able to create a sound I enjoy.”

All the completed works will be performed by professional musicians, the Society Players, during the July 30 concert, and the students will

have the opportunity to speak about the music they created.

“It’s very rewarding to work with such motivated and talented students,” said Leary. “Each student is doing excellent work and is pretty self-motivated. It’s been a joy to work with these kids, as always.”

The YCC Concert is presented in collaboration with the Greater Cazenovia Area Chamber of Commerce and is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating.

In addition to the YCC, Cazenovia Counterpoint includes a juried art show, solo and group musical performances, a plein air art event, a poetry round-robin and writers’ corner, new music at the Cazenovia Farmers’ Market, performances at the Fourth of July parade, the premiere of a Cazenovia native’s new film about a rock star, and a meditative music session.

“We just had our first sound bath last night and had a really good turn-out for it,” said Cazenovia Counterpoint Committee member Neva Pilgrim. “. . . This festival does indeed help bring people into Cazenovia, and all those performing are paid.”

Another highlight of Cazenovia Counterpoint has been vocal, piano, organ, violin, trombone, and alto saxophone performances by “Rising Stars,” prize-winning high school students from across CNY.

The Rising Stars are Dominic Fiacco, Elijah Gebers, Heather Buchanan-Wise, Sean Alvaro, Frank Wang,

What we can achieve

The summer of 1969 is 54 years ago now, but in the grand scheme of things, 54 years is not a great deal of time, but a lot has happened in those five decades and a great deal was achieved in the years leading up to that summer.

Thinking of this particular point in time, images of events like Woodstock or antiwar protests might be the first images to come to mind.

Others may look at the things taking place on a sociological level and the divide that existed at that time may seem the most obvious from a historical perspective as the country was torn over the issue of American participation in Vietnam among other issues like the civil rights movement

It was a turbulent time, the culmination of a decade that saw the assignation of John F. Kennedy and his brother Robert as well as Martin Luther King Jr.

But in the midst of all that was taking place, there were things that, at least for a few moments, could bring the country together.

July 20 marked the anniversary of first moon landing.

At least for a few fleeting moments, much of the country, if not the world, watched with its collective breath held as Neil Armstrong took those tentative steps down to the lunar surface from Apollo 11.

While there is some debate about what exactly he said and how his words were transferred across hundreds of thousands of miles of space back to Earth, the intent of his words ring true.

The steps he took were small for one person, but the steps represented a monumental leap for the entirety of the human race.

Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin along with all the other members of the previous Apollo missions that orbited the moon and returned home, were farther away from Earth than anyone had every been or has been since.

The space program was gradually taking shape with the Mercury program and by the early ’60s orbits of the planet had been completed, but the moon was still very far off.

In 1962, just nine years before Armstrong took those historic steps, President Kennedy posed a challenge to the scientific community.

As he noted other explorers who went before, crossing oceans, searching for new lands, climbing insurmountable heights and odds in the search for new experiences and new knowledge, Kennedy set forth an aggressive timeline for American space exploration with a goal to land and return from the moon by the end of the decade.

While speaking at Rice University, Kennedy said, “But why, some say, the Moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask, why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? ... We choose to go to the Moon. We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills; because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win ...”

There was a lot of learning that had to happen along the way, a lot of creation and discovery. There were also losses as the crew of Apollo 1 lost their lives in a fire.

And there would be challenges after. Most famously Apollo 13.

But through this all there was incredible perseverance that continued to push forward and follow Kennedy’s mandate to seek new knowledge and climb new mountains.

Looking back on that incredible moment of July 20, 1969, it was an amazing feat of human ingenuity accomplished with less computing power than the average cell phone or laptop has these days.

It was because of space exploration that much of the technology, like cell phones and GPS to name a few, have come to be common place.

But more than any of these creations, it represents all that we can accomplish when humans set a goal and work together to achieve even that which may seem impossible.

Salon discussions about growing old

All of the stylists were busy and the waiting area was full. There was no place for me to sit. That was a first. I must have looked quite perplexed because Mary Beth stopped working on her client’s curls and dragged a stool out from under her station.

“This is the best I can do right now, Ann,” she said.

Then one of the women whose coiffeur was coming to completion waved her hand and said, “ I’m sorry; it’s my fault. I was so late today. It was a kind of emergency. My neighbor flagged me down as I was getting in the car and asked for help. She seemed genuinely desperate. What could I do?”

“What was the matter?” A voice from the back room queried.

“Martha is in her late 70s … and I know that is not old , avoiding eye contact with most in the room, “but she told me she bought a computer last week so that she could see one of her grandson’s graduate from college … this afternoon…today and she had no idea how to use the computer to see the ceremony. I’m no computer whiz but I was able to help her … she paused. I understood her anxiety.”

She said she hadn’t seen her neighbor in months.

“I used to see her on her way to a weekly luncheon or going to the hospital where she volunteered, but not anymore,” she said. “I asked her about this, and it’s so sad and so common - the luncheon doesn’t happen anymore. Two of friends died and the other gal is having some financial troubles. She doesn’t go to the hospital anymore because her arthritis makes doing a lot of things she did there too difficult. And I think her only family lives in California. She was alone and I think, lonely. That computer connection was important to her.”

“Oh my gosh,” was a reply to that sentence. “I just read a note on my medical insurance Part D report that loneliness is an epidemic among the elderly. Loneliness, it said, negatively affects health. They were asking for ideas about how to change that …make people less lonely.”

FROM THE MAILBAG

Disappointed

To the editor: Independence Day is a celebration of the founding of the American experiment. In 1776, brave men and women stood up against tyranny and said “no more” to the injustices they were experiencing. They were over-taxed, underrepresented, and had no rights of their own. When the time came for a lasting founding document to be created, the first rights the founders established were those of free expression and speech.

I am disappointed that the chair of our local Democrat Committee, who happens to be the wife of my opponent, chose to assume that proximity to a group of people means wholesale acceptance of that group’s every belief, practice, and position. Ms. Deer does not claim to know or understand any of the individual members of our Republican Committee, or any of the “Moms for Liberty” for that matter. Instead of taking the time to have a respectful conversation and give people a chance, she chose to cast aspersions in the local newspaper.

For those who attend this amazing parade every year, you have seen the Manlius GOP march with candidates, supporters and just about everyone else who shows up at the parade. We even lent a hand to our Democrat assemblyman when his team ran out of candy, and made sure he was able to

Sandy, the elder stylist shook her head. “It’s loss that creates loneliness. Loss of people, loss of your capabilities as the culture, the society changes. I remember how I learned what was considered to be a required skill … etiquette ... who to introduce to whom, when to stand when someone enters a room, how to set a table, how to write a thank you note. I don’t need to know these things any more. I need to learn what the current slang is or how to, like your neighbor, use a computer. I sometimes feel like the world is leaving me behind. Sometimes I can’t participate in conversations that include words like venmo, AI, website, clickbait, etc. I have a cell phone, but I only use it to make calls. My grandkids think I’m a cave dweller.”

The salon was now abuzz with thoughts and comments about growing old, loss, isolation and loneliness.

Another client told the group how they had to bring her father across the country to live with them after their mom died. “He was so lonely, he forgot to eat. He was so sad all the time.”

“I’m wondering how many older people find themselves lost in today’s culture with few if any friends or acquaintances to call on for help or just a cup of tea,” continued Sandy. “I’ve read about building a small house in your yard for your parents or grandparents to live in. I think they call it a granny pad. But that requires kids who would want this and the money to do it. And … maybe granny would not want to move into something like that.”

Lil, who was having bailage done for a big family get together, noted that a lot of people want to stay in their own home, whether it’s an apartment or a house. “Your home is familiar, full of memories and meaning and is defined by and defines the occupant.”

“What about senior citizen groups?” someone suggested. “There is one in our village that seems to be thriving.”

Being the know-it-all, I said something about people needing help finding someone to share

brighten the day of Manlius kids on Independence Day.

Ms. Deer and Ms. Loomis are wrong to assume that every person who walks up to our group, or gets in a photo with our members, is intrinsically tied to the Manlius Republican Committee. If Ms. Deer truly had such a problem with what happened, she could have reached out to me personally and asked for an explanation. Instead, she went to the papers to attack the first fundamental right every American has under the Bill of Rights.

I am running for town supervisor because I believe every member of our community deserves a voice, not just the ones I agree with. I want to have conversations with constituents who think I am doing a great job and who think I am terrible at what I do, because I can learn and grow from every single interaction. Every resident in the Town of Manlius should know that their representatives respect them, even if they disagree. Their voice is just as important as everyone else’s, and their rights will be protected.

Hatred and hateful speech has no place in the Town of Manlius, I believe Ms. Deer would claim to agree with me. Unfortunately, she has done little to show that she means it.

their life like a senior citizen friend dating service. And then it came to me!

“What if they had pets?” I threw that idea out.

There was a silence that ended with observations that a pet could outlive the owner or that senior budgets couldn’t accommodate the additional cost of a cat or dog.

I plunged ahead., “Why not adopt an older pet, one that is at the stage in its life that is the same as the person. When there are pets left after someone dies, they go to a rescue. I’ve read how sad they are, how lonely they are. I don’t know what the cost would be, but the value is obvious for both the person and the pet. Someone to care for, a reason to get up, etc. … even someone to love or, and I drew a big breath, what about fostering kittens or puppies until they can be adopted?” I was on a roll now. “These are not long-term commitments. There are some rescues that will provide the foster household with the equipment and food to support the fosters.”

There are so many kittens, puppies and older pets that need someone and there are a lot of someones who need the companionship that fostering or adoption can bring.

The question hung in the air.

“How would you go about fostering or adopting a senior pet?” someone asked.

“I’m sure there are a lot of rescues including the ASPCA and the Humane Association that could help,” I said. I heard, “Friends Forever, the Central New York Cat Coalition, Wanderer’s Rest, Helping Hounds Dawn of a New Day ….”

Our late-to-the-salon gal said, “Let’s look in the phone book under animal rescues and shelters.”

“Wait. Phone book? Who has one of those? Oh, I mean I’ll check my phone. Who knows how to find google on a cell phone?”

Sandy laughed. “Maybe all the lonely people and pets just need a salon.”

Ann Ferro is a mother, a grandmother and a retired social studies teacher. While still figuring out what she wants to be when she grows up, she lives in Marcellus with lots of books, a spouse and a large orange cat.

Olson responds

To the editor: I read Mr. Wheeler’s letter in last week’s newspaper and felt a responsibility to respond to his bold attempt to divide our community with a minimal basis in fact or reality. Ever since I was elected to the county legislature, my goal was to do what is right for every resident of the 10th District, and for residents of the county as a whole.

Here are a few facts that would give context to the everyday reader.

This project will bring jobs to a city that needs jobs badly and it will bring increased investments from Destiny USA and COR into the Inner Harbor, knowing that their successes are intrinsically tied to an aquarium that will draw tourism from across the state and region.

More than 20% of our county’s sales tax revenue comes from tourism and our shopping mall. This revenue funds County government, which is responsible for the many social programs and community initiatives the prior author undoubtedly supports. Teach a man to fish, and he will eat for a day. Build an aquarium in his community and the tax revenue will make sure families are provided for and children are protected for generations to come.

This aquarium will bring added tourism to our county, which will Letters l Page 7

After three years in business in the local community, Peaks Coffee Co. has outgrown its location and is leaving its space at Nelson Corners.

But only half of the company is moving away – the café aspect of the business is heading into the city of Syracuse, while the roastery is staying local and relocating only a few miles down Route 20 in Cazenovia.

“We are so grateful to the community. We were just two kids with a dream to create a space to bring community and coffee together, and the support we received just means the world to us,” said Sam Bender, co-owner, along with his wife Kelsey, of Peaks Coffee Co. “But our business is growing and realistically, we just need more space.”

Saturday, Aug. 2 at 2 p.m. Hadley Kruczek-Aaron, Ph.D. will provide a tour of the Gerrit Smith Estate National Historic Landmark showing the locations of some of the thirty structures that once stood on the estate.

Dr. Kruczek-Aaron has conducted archeology studies for the past decade on the grounds of the estate and in 2007 completed her doctoral thesis on her archeological work at the site.

Also on the grounds, Kruczek-Aaron directed the public archeological excavations days hosted for several years by the Department of Anthropology at Syracuse University and the Beauchamp Chapter of the New York State Archeological Association.

The “Footprints of the Gerrit Smith Estate” tour on the estate grounds will indicate the foundation outline of such structures as the Gerrit Smith mansion, that burned in 1936, a temperance hotel, and essential oil shop, an ornithological museum, a gazebo, and an ice house.

Meet Prudence

Photo Provided by the

Hey Prudence, come out to play! Prudence is a four year old bulldog mix who came to the shelter as a stray. She weighs a whopping 65 pounds but there’s a gentle heart in that big barrel of a body! Prudence is super sweet and super snorty. We think she would make a great family dog. Prudence was the shelter ambassador at the Syracuse Nationals and met scores of people, include kids. She loved everyone, and everyone loved her. But Prudence doesn’t want the adulation of crowds; she just wants one special family who she can call her own. Could that be you? For more information about adoption, call 315-454-4479, email frontdesk1@cnyspca.org , or visit cnyspca.org.

has found a spot where it believes it can set up shop and put down some roots.

The group of local youth with the mission of offering alternative activities for their peers, who are led by Cazenovia High School History Teacher Kurt Wheeler, have begun the process of developing a coffee house for young and old alike at the corner of Albany and Sullivan streets in the village of Cazenovia from the group’s beginning, it has searched to develop a place for local youth to go and be with friends.

The coffeehouse/restaurant will be a first class operation, Wheeler said.

In order for it to be successful on an inter-generational level, which is wanted, everything will need to be of the highest quality and adults will need to feel comfortable there.

Officials representing Fays Drug store were pleased by the number of people who applied for jobs at the new store scheduled to open in Cazenovia next month.

The new store will be located in the Town and Country Plaza on Rt 20 in the village.

It has been scheduled to open Aug. 24 and according to Harry Quinn, district manager for Fays, all is proceeding according to plan.

Mr. Quinn said he was very pleased with the people he interviewed at the village’s municipal building for positions at the store.

“The turnout was very good and I was very pleased by the quality of the people we interviewed,” Mr. Quinn said. Mr. Quinn said people applicants came from Morrisville, Eaton and New Woodstock, but the majority were from Cazenovia. “Based upon what we saw here today, I think we could staff the store right now and at this point I see no need to do any further interviews although we are always accepting applications. We will be hiring both full and part-time employees but primarily part-timers. The village has been very kind to us and at this point was are just anxious to get started.”

bolster our small businesses such as restaurants and local hotels. It will also offer incredible educational opportunities for kids who otherwise may not have an opportunity to experience marine life from their schools in land-locked Onondaga County, many of whom will be able to visit for free through their schools and sponsorship programs. Students at SUNY ESF, Cornell University, OCC, LeMoyne, and Syracuse University will be able to do in-depth study and even research at this facility without having to travel hours away from campus.

Our county is seeing a generation changing investment by Micron into our community, and that announcement came after years of negotiations and conversations. Decades of planning went into securing Onondaga County as the semiconductor manufacturing hub for Micron, and that happened on the heels of the county legislature voting to fund this aquarium. Our investment here will enhance Onondaga County and the City of Syracuse. The funds it will bring in will be used to invest more heavily in lead abatement for impoverished communities, provide greater services to our veterans, and increase mental health services in our schools. These programs are incredibly important, they are not free. It costs millions of dollars to provide for our community, I for one would prefer to see those dollars come from tourism revenues than increased taxes.

This aquarium is a chance to decrease our reliance on the New York State Legislature to fund our localities. It is our opportunity to bring our own investment to Onondaga County and punch our own ticket to a brighter future for our kids and grandkids.

Onondaga County’s best days are ahead of it, I am proud to stand arm in arm with my colleagues in providing for every resident in the community, even those who don’t yet see the full picture.

Thank you

To the editor:

On behalf of all those who organized and took part in the 2023 Cazenovia July 4th Footraces, we would like to thank the many people and groups who helped to make it possible. We had an amazing turnout, with nearly 900 runners participating in the 1 mile, 5K and 10 mile events to celebrate the 50th edition of the Dan Sutton Memorial Races!

Many thanks to our generous race sponsors: Fleet Feet Sports, Cazenovia Community Fitness, McIntosh Box & Pallet Company, Creekside Dental and the “Caz Life” committee of the chamber of commerce. Thanks also to our prize sponsors Ralph Monforte/ Cazenovia Jewelry, the Brewster Inn and the Lincklaen House. Thanks to River Valley Foods for the refreshing popsicles, to TOPS for their gift card and assistance with finish line food and drinks, to McDonalds of Cazenovia for the water stop cups and to the Cazen -

ovia Bagel Co. for the discounted pricing on their bagels.

We also appreciate the continued support of the Cazenovia Village Police Department, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, CAVAC, Cazenovia Fire Department Rescue Squad, National Grid, and the Town and Village of Cazenovia.

Thank you to the many volunteers who handed out bib numbers and shirts, worked water stops, controlled the traffic, set up cones, cheered on the runners, passed out refreshments and cleaned up after the event. People like you are the life blood of our sport. The efforts of all those who helped organize and support the race were critical to the success of the event.

Thanks to all those who helped in ways large and small to make the event successful. No matter what your contribution to the 50th Annual July 4th Footraces, your help is deeply appreciated. Most of all, thank you to our many runners! We hope to see all of you next year as we kick off the second half century of this great race.

Saddened by behavior

To the editor:

I like Mark Olson. I was pleased when he ran his first campaigns and came to our door and accepted phone calls with questions or ideas. I began to question some of his information sources and approach in an encounter that involved a public entity and thought that something had changed.

When he ran for county legislator, I called him and told him I was concerned that he should not be mayor and legislator for reasons of possible conflicts of interest and pure time and energies. He told me that he would resign as mayor if elected after a few months when a trustee would take over the position. I believed him and told others that. Ask him!

He either lied or changed his mind on that.

Casey Cleary-Hammarstedt’s accurate and sardonic letter is on point. He rejected the overwhelming expressed will of his constituents on his vote for an $85 million fish bowl in which statistics for proposed fees and patrons are beyond absurd - especially in light of county needs to help chronically poor and underserved.

He scoffed at the need for land review and remediation in whatever understanding he has of COR and its promises.

Most recently, his and planning board’s promotion of another supermarket- a mile from another- which will dramatically change life for those of east of that area is a capitulation to forces antithetical to the value of this village and area.

I am really saddened by Mark Olson’s behavior which has grown more autocratic and more aligned with big money and power while he concentrates on favored candy.

I think he had a period of serving the village well but we deserve open and well publicized open forumsnot dinners and parade appearancesor now is the time for him to resign one or both positions.

According to Pilgrim, each performance featured a premiere of a new work by a young composer who wrote the piece in collaboration with the musician. The performances were taped and aired on FRESH INK on WCNY-FM.

One of the featured composers is Jason Cavanagh, who participated in the YCC in 2020 after graduating from Fayetteville-Manlius High School.

“[I] gained a lot of really valuable knowledge about writing for chamber music,” Cavanagh said of his YCC experience. “Paul was a great teacher and was really helpful all throughout the creative process of conceptualizing and writing a piece of music.”

This summer, Cavanagh is interning with the Society for New Music, which is the presenter of Cazenovia Counterpoint, and he is preparing to enter his senior year at Boston University, where he is majoring in composi-

ship. [Having] a winning culture within the CBSA [promotes] the program to continue to grow the number of participants that we serve.”

Cazenovia secured the championship title on July 11 with a “walk-off win” that occurred when Nolan Way delivered a single that put the home team in the lead in the bottom of the sixth and final inning. Because Lee, the visiting team, did not get another turn at bat, the game ended immediately with the home team victorious.

According to the CBSA’s game recap, Cazenovia was falling behind Lee in the early stages of the game, but the team made a comeback and tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nate Johnson contributed a run batted in (RBI) single and Hayden Way had a run-scoring double.

“As Lee took a 6-3 lead in the top of the sixth inning, Cazenovia showcased their resilience,” the recap states. “Avery Johnson and Max Nichiporuk started a rally with base hits, followed by Nate Johnson’s run-

“Working with Neva and the Society for New Music has been amazing,” he said. “I have gotten to learn so much about the ins and outs of how this Cazenovia Counterpoint festival is run, and I have been presented with so many cool opportunities to perform and compose. It really has been a joy.”

One of the things he agreed to do this summer was to compose a piece for Rising Star Frank Wang to perform during the festival.

“Frank plays the saxophone, and the piece was written for solo alto saxophone and piano accompaniment,” Cavanagh said. “The first movement, entitled ‘Turmoil’ is a very fast and turbulent section with lots of fast passages in both the piano and saxophone parts. The second movement, entitled ‘Easement’ is much more calm and relaxed, making use of both the whole-tone and pentatonic scales. Overall, it is about six to seven minutes in length.”

On July 19, Cavanagh stopped by the First Presbyterian Church to assist this year’s YCC participants.

“[The YCC] was a program that I gained

scoring single and a crucial two-RBI base hit by Hayden Way. With Williams Pugh drawing a walk and the bases loaded, Joel Bush singled to set the stage for Nolan Way’s heroics. Way’s single up the middle sealed the victory and crowned Cazenovia as the 2023 District 9 Little League Champions.”

The CBSA reported that O’Malley delivered a solid performance on the pitching mound, allowing five hits and two earned runs over three and one-third innings, striking out four batters. Hayden Way contributed one inning of no-run ball, striking out two. Max Nichiporuk and Nate Johnson combined for four strikeouts in the final one and two-third innings to secure the win.

On offense, Cazenovia had a total of 11 hits in the game. Max Nichiporuk went 3-for-3 at the plate, Hayden Way finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Nate Johnson and Bush collected multiple hits.

“This team has a lot of positive energy in the dugout and when we get down, we know it’s not over; we have to keep fighting and lifting each other up,” said Max Nichiporuk.

“Contrary to popular belief, I was not around for the 100th-year celebration!” Jones said. “. . . I was appointed to the town

Cazenovia Little League last won a district title in 2017.

“This victory marks a significant milestone for our league,” said CBSA Vice President Ray Schofield. “. . . It was a nailbiter that kept everyone on the edge of their seats until the very end.”

With its district championship win, the Cazenovia Majors All-Star team advanced to the New York State Section 2 “Sectional Tournament,” ultimately losing to Saratoga Springs and Utica.

Throughout the All-Star district tournament and state sectional games, Cazenovia’s batting leaders were Nate Johnson with a .643 batting average, 1 home run, 7 RBI, and 9 runs scored; Max Nichiporuk with a .615 batting average and 7 RBI; and Hayden Way with a .438 batting average, 1 home run, and 7 RBI.

“Max and Nate had crazy offensive numbers throughout the tournament, [and] Hayden constantly came up in clutch spots to help us win a bunch of games,” said Mike Nichiporuk.

The pitching leaders were Nate Johnson with a 2.40 earned run average, 11.2 in-

cation within New York and is best suited to meet the needs of our Basic School training. We thank Governor Hochul for her continued support and unprecedented investment in initiatives like this that strengthen our public safety efforts.”

On July 29, Ingrid Slocum, a pianist who lives in Cazenovia, will play new music at the Cazenovia Farmers’ Market from 10 a.m. to noon. Slocum is a rising high school senior schooled at home through Memoria Academy, which teaches students through classical education. She takes piano lessons with Marlene Billhardt and mandolin lessons with Joe Davoli. She enjoys playing classical pieces by Chopin, Beethoven, Haydn, and Strauss, as well as songs from the 1940s. After high school, Slocum plans to continue her education at a liberal arts college.

nings pitched, and 20 strikeouts; O’Malley with a 4.50 earned run average, 9.1 innings pitched, and 13 strikeouts; and Fraser with a 3.00 earned run average, 4.2 innings pitched, and 10 strikeouts.

According to Mike Nichiporuk, this year’s All-Star team exhibited an impressive work ethic, dedication, and desire to improve.

He pointed out that from May 15 to June 26, most of the kids playing for the Cazenovia Majors All-Stars were also participating on travel ball teams and in regular season little league at the same time.

“We were running practices around [those other teams],” he said. “A lot of our practices were in the evenings on Fridays and Sundays, so the commitment from these guys was incredible. On top of that, this team never got down. We often found ourselves trailing or tied in the late innings, and we found a way to win. It’s an amazing group and [I’m] excited to watch them continue to grow at the next level.”

A 1952 graduate of Whitesboro High School and a 1956 graduate of University of Colorado at Boulder, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. When starting her career at Highland-Alameda County Hospital in Oakland, CA, she contracted tuberculosis. She moved to National Jewish Hospital in Colorado to quarantine and to participate in experimental treatments for tuberculosis. She returned to Central New York to be closer to family and served as a public health nurse for Oneida and Madison Counties, the director of health services and instructor of nursing at Cazenovia College, a staff nurse at Crouse-Irving Memorial Hospital, a supervisor at Loretto Home Care Services and other positions. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the Nursing Honorary Society.

Ann married Edwin Gruppe in December 1962 at the Hamilton College Chapel during a legendary Central New York blizzard. After spending a night at the Lincklaen House, she and Ned settled in Cazenovia in 1963 and raised

three children.

They were active members of the First Presbyterian Church in Cazenovia. Ann served as an elder and deacon of the church and was the long time chair of the Flower Committee, where she shared her love of flowers by arranging grand masterpieces. In recent years, she enjoyed playing the bells.

Ann and Ned resided at Thousand Island Park during the summers and were all-summer residents in retirement. She was a faithful member of the choir at the Tabernacle services.

She enjoyed being on the water, picnicking, walking, reading, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. No matter where she was, she cooked, enjoyed great meals and hosted many dinner parties. Not only were her meals delicious, but her tables were creatively presented complete with na-

Larry W. Omans, 70

Professional snowmobile racer

Larry W. Omans, 70, passed away in Dayton, NV, on July 11, 2023. He was born on July 28, 1952, the third child of William Omans and Hetty Woodcock in Hamilton, N.Y. He grew up on Tuscarora Lake and had an avid interest in anything motorized. He was known to soup up lawn mowers to avoid the hassle of walking. His motorized passion drew him to snow machines, which he raced competitively from age 14. He notoriously drew scorn from worried parents after piloting his snowmobile across open water. Undeterred, he continued to work construction in the off-season and raced professionally until 1978. He was inducted in the Snowmobile Hall of Fame in Eagle River, Wisconsin and his 1976 SRX 440 Sno Pro is still featured there. He left professional racing to raise his children Justin and Kara with his wife, Virginia Hill, who remember him for

his dogged work ethic. He would work all day at the construction site and build their family home by night. He was a determined man with little need for sleep!

Larry was diagnosed with cancer in 2006, which he tenaciously fought for 17 years. Between treatments, he still mustered the energy to play golf regularly, take on a number of home renovations and enjoy firearm target practice. He had enthusiasm for marathon road trips with his closest friend and caregiver Joey Basa, and they made many journeys to New York, Idaho and Montana to visit loved ones. His last project was the com -

plete restoration of a 1973 Jeep CJ5, which he drove through the Nevada desert at reckless speeds - his love of full throttle racing lasted right until the end and belied his age and condition.

Larry was preceded in death by his son Justin Omans, his parents William and Hetty and his beloved canine companions Molly and Katie. He is survived by his daughter Kara Switzer (Travis) and four siblings Jo DenBleyker (Jack), Bridget Omans, Mark Omans (Karen Eschenberg) and Lindy Eschmann. The family is forever grateful to Joey, Eric, Terri, Brandon and Erika Basa for their love, care and support of Larry in his final years. A graveside service will be held Sept. 30, 2023, at Erieville Cemetery followed by a celebration of life at Hotel Solsville, 7243 Valley Road, Madison, NY, with times to be determined In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to the cancer organization of your choosing.
