C-NS, LivErPooL bAttLE AftEr LoSSES

If there was nothing else other than the “Star Wars” Cup on the line, the annual football game between CiceroNorth Syracuse and Liverpool would carry plenty of emotion and passion.
Now, though, a sense of urgency surrounds Friday’s renewal of this rivalry at LHS Stadium, based on what just took place.
In their first encounter since last November’s Section III Class AA final last Friday night at Bragman Stadium, C-NS lost 34-18 to Christian Brothers Academy, the Northstars done in by missed opportunities in the early stages and a key absence.
Not far away, Liverpool, once 3-0, took its second consecutive defeat at the hands of another rival, Baldwinsville, who pulled away in the late stages to beat the Warriors 26-15.
At C-NS, the highly-anticipated showdown between the 5-0 Northstars and 5-0 CBA would turn against the hosts on two fronts.
Even before kickoff, the Northstars learned it would not have kicker Jakob Purdy available, meaning that, whenever it got near the end zone, it would have to go for touchdowns and two-point conversions rather than having the option to kick for points.
More importantly, though, was that C-NS, with a chance to go in front two different times in the first half, could not do so, first by seeing an eight-plus minute opening drive stall at the CBA 20-yard line.
Then, after a blocked punt late in the second quarter, the Northstars, trailing 7-6, again drove inside the Brothers’ 20 and, again, were stopped on fourth down.
Right after, CBA drove down the field and scored on a 30-yard pass from Porter Matt to Jason Brunson, then took the second-half kickoff and, mostly on the running of Jamier Handford, drove to the C-NS 12, from where Isaiah Coleman scored to make it 21-6.
All night long, Handford hurt the Northstars. His interception at midfield early in the second quarter set up the Brothers’ first TD, a two-yard run by Handford after he had gained all the yards on a 48-yard march.

High school is a time for growth, discovery, and change as well as a time to consider and explore future career opportunities.
To achieve this, students need access to identify their aspirations, career interests, and confidence to successfully proceed on a suitable path.
The Anthony Joseph Swingtet pays tribute to Gershwin Sunday

Composer George Gershwin died an untimely death after suffering from a brain tumor at age 38 back in 1937. Although his life was cut tragically short, he packed plenty of music into his 20-year career, composing countless symphonies, musicals, operas and many of the most memorable melodies that comprise the Great American Songbook.
Some of those standards include “Oh, Lady Be Good,” “Summertime,” “They Can’t Take that Away from Me” and “S’Wonderful.” In 1924, he teamed up with the Paul Whiteman Orchestra to present his masterful jazz-classical concerto, “Rhapsody in Blue.”
At 2 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 15, the
Anthony Joseph Swingtet will celebrate the marvelous music of George Gershwin at the Carman Community Room, Liverpool Public Library, 310 Tulip St. Sunday’s performance is the second event in the library’s fall concert series titled “Resounding Reeds.”
One of Central New York’s most gifted clarinet players, retired Oswego educator Tony Joseph explained why he decided to focus on Gershwin.
“Every so often I really enjoy presenting tribute/theme shows,” he wrote in an email.
His Swingtet previously performed musical salutes to songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen, bandleader Duke Ellington and clarinetist Benny Goodman.
“The inspiration for choosing Gershwin’s music came to me as I

The Liverpool Central School District recognizes this, as well as the importance of providing their students with the authentic learning experiences to do so.
“One of the things that we’re most proud of at Liverpool are the opportunities that we can offer our students. To be able to offer as many opportunities to students as possible is one of our values, and part of our mission,” Briana O’Brien, associate principal at Liverpool High School, said.
During the 2022-2023 school year, Liverpool High School began providing several new Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs for their students.
Such programs include: Business administration, communication arts, drone technology (RPAS), early childhood education, hospitality, restaurant management and culinary arts, and preapprenticeship for the trades.
O’Brien said the program developed from an initial drone technology program the district implemented a couple of years ago.
The program was very successful and unique to Liverpool. After consulting with the board of education, the community, parents, students, and local businesses, the district was on its way to providing additional unique opportunities for students.
These opportunities take place at the school.
“The feedback from the students was that they
wanted to stay on school grounds for this program. They wanted to stay where their friends are and where they can quickly access support,” O’Brien said.
Teachers are providing the educational component and working along with Amanda Iannicello, CTEworkbasedlearningcoordinator, theyareclosely involved with communication with local businesses and colleges that want to come talk to the students about potential employment opportunities and post-secondary certifications.
Students can visit the participating local community industries and hear from guest speakers about careers in these industries. Workers from the industry also have the option to visit the high school to speak.
The response from both students and teachers has been positive.
“Students are asking for these specific courses, enrolling in them, and continuing with them which is very exciting,” O’Brien said.
Teachers love the unique, and sometimes nontraditional, classroom experiences they get to provide the students, according to O’Brien.
“The teachers feel supported and we’re happy to support them because we know they’re providing valuable opportunities for our kids,” O’Brien said.
The benefits of these CTE programs go beyond exposing students to various industries.
For example, the pre-apprenticeship students are able to get their OSHA 10 certifications by the end of their senior year.
“Students are not only gaining contacts and experience within these industries, but they’re also coming out with some sort of credential from our program,” O’Brien said.

Early in the fourth quarter, after he fumbled at the C-NS five to give the Northstars, down 21-12, a chance to inch closer, Handford made up for it by sacking Jaxon Razmovski and forcing a fumble that Marquan Saddler returned 20 yards for a decisive TD. C-NS did make some big plays, Razmovski throwing TD passes of 24 yards to Tristan Johnson and 18 yards to James Magda, along with a 72-yard kickoff return by Miy’Jon McDowell Reid that set up another score, but it wasn’t enough.
As this went on, Liverpool, attempting to bounce back from a 62-0 defeat to CBA six days earlier, met a B’ville side that had started 0-4 but had just got its first win of the season over Utica Proctor. \During a lowscoring first half, the Warriors, down 6-0, seemed to suffer another setback

when, late in the second quarter, quarterback John Sindoni left the game with an injury, only to see Dom Carroll, his replacement, lead his team down the field and throw a 10-yard scoring pass to Jordan Grandinetti.
The Bees answered with a quick drive deep into Liverpool territory and, just before halftime, John Widrick converted a field goal and B’ville took a 9-7 advantage to the break.
Sindoni returned, leading another Liverpool scoring drive early in the third quarter as Owen Brown got the TD. From there, though, the Bees’ defense shut the Warriors down while, on the other end, the Bees put together three different scoring drives to go in front for good. As a whole, Liverpool’s passing game struggled in the rain, but the ground attack was solid with more than 200 yards. Brown led the way with 16 carries for 114 yards, with Gradinetti catching four passes for 51 yards.

Accompanying Joseph on Sunday will be pianist Barry Blumenthal, drummer Jimmy Johns and bassist Mike Solazzo.
“These are three of the most highly regarded jazz musicians in the area,” Joseph wrote.
The Swingtet will perform a dozen Gershwin tunes such as “Someone to Watch over Me,” “I Got Rhythm” and “Our Love Is Here to Stay.”

how can such a small head be attached to such a wide body? Peppa the portly pooch technically came to the shelter as a stray, but that’s not the whole story. A truck driver saw someone leave her behind, and he quickly rescued her, and she came to the CNySPCA for a second chance at a happy home. we think Peppa’s about eight years old. She has a crooked face and trusting eyes. She’s very gentle and has an air of vulnerability about her. She’s been through a lot, but she looks at each person with a hopeful optimism that good things will happen. She has some health issues, which we’ll tell you about. She would do best in a family who loves her enough to take her on gentle walks and limit her food intake. we think she would do well in almost any patient, loving home. this sweet senior deserves a second chance. October awareness
There are many things people look forward to in the month of October.
From the cooler weather to crisp leaves and pumpkin spiced drinks, this is a month that has a lot to enjoy.
It is also a month where many seek to raise awareness about breast cancer.
It is estimated that one in eight women living now will at one point in their lives be diagnosed with breast cancer.
And while it is less common, men are also diagnosed with the disease.
According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., about 2,190 men are diagnosed each year.
According to breastcancer.org, in 2023, an estimated 297,790 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in U.S. women, along with 55,720 new cases of DCIS or in situ are projected.
In 2023, an estimated 2,800 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 833.
There are currently more than 4 million women with a history of breast cancer in the United States. This includes women currently being treated and women who have finished treatment.
According to Healthfinder.gov breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women.
The good news, according to Healthfinder.gov, is that most women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.
A mammogram – the screening test for breast cancer – can help find breast cancer early when it’s easier to treat.
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about the importance of detecting breast cancer early.
During the month, Healthfinder. gov recommends healthcare providers take several steps when possible such as encourage women ages 40 to 49 to talk with their doctors about when to start getting mammograms and organize an event to talk with women ages 50 to 74 in your community about getting mammograms every two years.
During this month there will be various efforts made to help raise awareness from fundraisers to wearing pink in support of the fight against breast cancer.
One group that is well known locally on many levels, but most specifically for its work in this area is the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund of CNY, Inc.
The Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund, Inc., supports both new and established researchers investigating the causes, prevention and treatment of breast cancer.
This research includes but is not be limited to studies of the genetic, molecular, cellular and environmental factors involved in the development and progression of breast cancer; application of the knowledge thus gained to educate medical professionals and increase public awareness for the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer; and studies of the outcomes of breast cancer detection and treatment on the patient, their families and society.
Whether it is talking to a family member and encouraging them to have a checkup or making a donation to an organization like the Baldwin foundation or any number of other organizations committed to the fight against breast cancer, there are many ways to help lend support to this worthy endeavor.
HOW CAN WE HELP?
AN AutuMN wANDEr
They make a hard woody sound when you gather them together. They’re not strong, not at all like twigs of the same size, yet their rigidity as brown leftovers from summer glory lead me to believe that you could gather them for some kind of natural art piece. I tie the spent stems of my day lilies with a piece of a more flaccid aster stem and put them against the Japanese Maple as I work through the side garden. Maybe I can put them in a big vase on the floor.
It’s fall garden maintenance time.
The un-named bush that is now sporting white berries, no doubt poisonous to humans, is definitely feed for the birds. I leave the weedy, overgrown branches alone. The side border would look so much better if I could manage this shrub.
Everything is not about me and my desire for magazine clean borders.
Next it’s the astilbe, even with spent blossoms, they are lovely. I clean out some of the leaves and debris as best I can … all of this is a bit dicey when you are using a cane. The persistence of the meadowsweet is amazing to me, truly. A lovely flower itself, it is a bit of a bully, pushing its way among parts of the border where it overshadows everything. No matter how I attempt to corral it, it shows up in the oddest places. I reluctantly pull several of the meadowsweet stems out from the astilbe, knowing that it will show up somewhere next season.
Then it’s the area of the border that has defied all attempts to replant. Two yeas ago, something killed all of the perennials in this area. The area once was the happy home of delphiniums, salvia, foxglove, liatris, hollyhocks and Shasta daisies. A healthy, luxuriant sweet pink climbing rose grew up and over the shed. It was my showcase garden, the closest I ever came to the gardening prowess of my mother and grandmother. Now? A wan colored climber rose bush struggles to stay alive and all of the new perennials, planted carefully last year with the assist of Miracle Grow garden soil, have disappeared. The Catmint and veronica
made a sad showing and then disappeared. The only growing things that seem to thrive are celandine, coneflowers and ajuga. But, oh my! The ajuga just filled the area last spring with a blue that challenged the sky. I do miss the tall cottage garden look of the delphies, the foxies, the hollyhocks that remind me of a long ago home. Did it remind me of a time when the blossoms weren’t filtered by the responsibilities of adult living? Even the bel-
ligerent bishop weed has died out here as did the previously annoying belligerent lamium, also known as “dead nettle.” I fought many a battle with those two.
While I try to figure out what is wrong with this area of my garden, I turn my attention across the small spate of grass to another garden, part shade, part sun. In the shade, I have my much-loved coral bells, planted not
Norm Andrzejewski was an inspiring visionary
Norm Andrzejewski
(pronounced An-draJEWS-kee) – who lived in Liverpool – was a Dorothy Day kind of Catholic.
Norm died Sunday, Oct. 1, after a lengthy battle with stomach cancer. The founder of Operation Southern Comfort (renamed Operation Northern Comfort in 2012), Norm was 82 years old.
What do I mean by comparing Norm to Dorothy Day, the founder of the Catholic Worker Movement in 1933 in New York City?
The Catholic Worker Movement is a pacifist undertaking that combines aid for the poor and homeless with nonviolent yet direct action on their behalf. That’s exactly what Norm provided in both the Southern and Northern operations.
Catholic worker
Having spent most of his life as a public health administrator, Norm transformed himself into a charity administrator shortly after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005. He flipped through his personal Rolodex and contacted like-minded friends from Central New York to go down there, clean up and rebuild.
That was the start of Operation Northern Comfort and in the ensuing years many of its 800 volunteers have made nearly 50 visits to help reverse the wreckage in Louisiana and Mississippi.
He put Operation Southern Comfort under the organizational umbrella of St. Joseph the Worker Church in Liverpool to minimize administration costs.
Although his church affiliations were important to Norm, there was never any proselytizing.
“Atheists are welcome,” he said at the

time. “What matters is you pull with the rest of us.”
In recognition of his group’s accomplishments down South, Andrzejewski was named a 2009 Post-Standard Achievement Award winner.
Crawfish Fest founder
One year earlier in 2008, Norm founded Syracuse’s Crawfish Festival, celebrating that Louisiana seafood staple. The 16th annual fest took place on May 6 down city in Clinton Square.
Over the years, Norm’s organization also responded after natural disasters descended upon Houston and North Carolina, plus closer locales such as the city of Oneida in the aftermath of considerable flooding. Amid the COVID pandemic, however, Operation Northern Comfort’s service trips were put on pause for three years, until an advanced team of five made their way to Fort Myers, Fla., this past January to cut out moldy drywall and pull out floors damaged by Hurricane Ian.
Like the tireless social activist Dorothy Day, Norm found many ways to put his faith in God to good use. In the late 1990s, he was instrumental in the establishment of the House at 807 here in the village, which provided low-cost dwellings for seniors.
More recently, Operation Northern Comfort turned its attention to home and building modifications for senior citizens, veterans and local food pantries. Volunteers have built ramps and railings, grab bars, sliding doors, widened doorways, platform lifts, safer staircases, shelving units and more than 1,000 desks for needy students.
Operation Northern Comfort’s new CEO, Laurel Flanagan, called Norm an “inspiration and a visionary.” Calling hours are scheduled from 1

bizarre bazaars this month
Since the Johnson Park bazaar organizers – Jessica and Jeremy Mosley – also operate the Cozmic Cauldron in downtown Syracuse, the Liverpool couple have a special place in their hearts for Halloween. So they’ll present two bazaars this month, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays Oct. 14 and 28. Dozens of arts and crafts vendors will participate and Smackers Snacks will sell munchies and beverages as well.

Riordan running for Cicero board
To the editor:
I am Jay Riordan, a Democratic candidate for the Cicero town councilor (town board) and am here announcing my candidacy and campaign. My website is at jayforcicero.com/ and my Facebook page is at facebook.com/jayforcicerony
Cicero has always been regarded as a Republican town. And that’s the case now: All town board members are Republican. And new town board members usually come from the all-Republican planning board. Just seeing that Cicero’s local government is all-Republican can deter Democrats and Independents from feeling invited to participate in town government, or even to express their concerns.
Here are the current political enrollment statistics as of June for the Town of Cicero from the Onondaga County Board of Election’s June Report: 8,003 Republican, 7,064 Democrat, 563 Conservative, 92 Working Families Party, 1,149 Other, 6,917 blank, 23,788 total voter registrations for the Town of Cicero
Democrats and Independents actually have 58.7% of the town population registered as such right now, but this majority has no political representation on town board at all now.
This is especially important now with the huge changes that are coming due to the Micron project and its spin-offs and affiliated businesses.
Consider that Cicero has 31,435 residents as of 2020. The influx of Micron
and other new businesses is going to push those numbers up, way up. Micron plans to hire up to 9,000 direct employees and create up to 36,000 supply-chain and construction jobs. That’s 45,000 new workers and doesn’t include family members.
Cicero is the closest community to the Micron build-site -- Cicero is closer than Clay, and is where these new residents will look first at for a potential new residence. Cicero needs to get going with a plan on how to absorb this influx.
Although Cicero started a new comprehensive plan process at the beginning of this year (see visioncicero.com/), that process has not been proceeding as it should. The kick-off meeting was indeed held on April 18 with an overflow crowd. Since then, though, no further progress has been communicated by the town or the consulting engineering firm to the Cicero public. In particular, the deliverables for Summer 2023 -- a “Community Profile” and a “Vision and Policy Framework” -- have not been released. This lack of progress and communication is holding up other projects like the Brewerton Revitalization, which is a combined project proposal between the Towns of Cicero and Hastings and the State.
We residents of Cicero are smack-dab in the middle of huge issues that will need appropriate planning and attention. The town can do better. An “outside” voice on the Cicero Town Board can help to ensure that important deadlines are met, communication to residents is effective and timely, and that town business is conducted in a way that all the residents of Cicero can be satisfied with.
I respectfully ask the residents of Cicero to support my campaign, and to vote “Jay For Cicero” in November.

Support for Dell
To the editor: Kathleen Dell has been our Skaneateles Town Court judge for the past 16 years, working alongside Judge Charlie Major. When Judge Major retired recently, Judge Dell volunteered to step in and cover both courts.
Judge Dell is fair, organized, respected, and has so much experience with the court. Before being elected as judge, Kathleen served as the court clerk for 14 years. She has hands-on experience with all aspects of our local judicial system.
When the full-time court clerk left suddenly in July, Judge Dell stepped in again to work with our part-time clerk to ensure court matters continued to be handled in a timely, accurate, and efficient manner.
As town board liaison to the Skaneateles courts, I have seen first-hand Judge Dell’s ability to fulfill her role masterfully at all levels. There is so much more to being a judge than sitting on the bench and hearing cases.
On Nov, 7, I urge you to vote Kathleen Dell for Skaneateles Town Judge.

Vote for DeMasi
To the editor: It is a pleasure to write this letter to
the editor in support of Ralph DeMasi for Skaneateles Town Justice.
Ralph’s unwavering dedication to serving his community and family together with his experience navigating the legal system on behalf of clients will make Ralph an excellent Skaneateles town justice.
I have known Ralph for all of the 20 plus years that I have practiced law in our beautiful town and village. As an attorney, I have found that Ralph is intelligent, hard-working, and holds himself to the highest ethical standards.
He has demonstrated his passion for justice through his experience as a skilled trial lawyer and advocate both in the courtroom and through agency. He holds himself to the highest standards of ethics and integrity while representing countless clients and children in various legal matters throughout Central New York including civil and criminal cases and traffic matters. Based on this experience, I am confident in Ralph’s undying dedication to uphold the rule of law fairly and impartially.
Ralph has been a proud and active member of our community for more than 20 years, as evidenced by his current service as a trustee on the Skaneateles Library Board and the Barrow Art Gallery. He has raised two sons who, like their father, are military combat veterans.
Ralph’s exceptional qualifications to serve as our next Skaneateles town justice clearly distinguish himself in this important election. Please join me in supporting his candidacy for Skaneateles Town Letters l Page 10

per the very crowded mass of greenery.
In what I call my most valuable garden real estate, that which gets sun all day, there is stone crop ground cover, salvia, a struggling sage plant, thyme, iris and my rhubarb. The latter is from my grandmother’s rhubarb, but somehow, it doesn’t do as well as I remember hers doing and since it is represented by only two plants, my harvest is always small. But today, I can clean out some of the dead leaves from all of the inhabitants in the sun.

There are two patches of late spring blue flag that escort you to a mixture of obedient plants, lambs’ ear and oregano. I lost control of what grows here years ago. There is also one tulip bulb somewhere in there that blooms every spring. I yank weakly at the invading wild asters that pep-

ANNOUNCEMENT #1
As many of you already know, “Seneca Savings” has been a strong supporter (sponsor) of my radio show for over two years. They have been a great “fit” for me because, not only do I personally have “three” accounts with them, my two grandchildren, Michaela and Perry lV also have accounts with them. There are several reasons I bank with “Seneca Savings” but none more important than the service they provide me when I have a question or need something done…”sooner” rather than “later”. Even more important, is that I genuinely like every employee I have met…at each of their four locations. Their commitment to the charitable organizations in the communities they service is both well documented and successful. And, did I mention…they are one of the best businesses to work for in Central New York.
A few months ago I had a conversation with Laurie Ucher, Sr. VP for Retail banking at Seneca Savings, about a golf ball promotion before the end of the season. ANNOUNCEMENT #2
The 2023 golf season has been a very successful, wonderful surprise to me. I played in more golf tournaments than at any other year in my career. I hit my irons higher and farther than I have in the last 4-5 years. I hit my driver longer and hit more fairways than I have in 4-5 years

and finally, I “lowered” my handicap, which is simply not supposed to happen to people in their “advanced” years. I evaluated everything I did that could have been responsible for my success. I concluded that the only two things I did differently took me 8 minutes every morning and 8 minutes every evening. My daughter, Dr. Holly Noun, Sports Medicine Program Director at Westfield State University, introduced me to a product that , “restores my body’s ability to deliver more oxygen and remove more waste from my tissues and increase circulation”. Holly used this product for several months, while under the care of Susan Cotta, a Physical Therapist, for a serious condition she had to deal with for almost two years. I started using this product in January 2023 because Holly believed it would be beneficial, not only to me, but to “anyone who has blood flowing in their body”. I was reluctant at first but made a commitment to use the product for 3 months. I have been using the product for the last 8 months. The name of the product is BEMER. Correct…I have used BEMER throughout the entire golf season.
The Good News: Holly and Susan are coming to CNY to join me to inform you about the impact of using BEMER on our health and performance. All attendees will receive a “FREE” 8-minute session with BEMER, which will restore your body’s ability to prepare, recover and heal from stress, lack of focus, fatigue, muscle tightness and injury.

One blossoms later with large white, sweetly-fragrant flowers. Both seed their offspring prodigiously throughout the area. There is always detritus to gather here. To the editor: My childhood visits to the transfer station and the swap shop with my parents hold special memories. It was a treasure trove of free finds, from skis to 10-speed bikes. However, returning to Skaneateles as an adult, I found the swap shop closed, and the transfer station struggling with rising costs.
During his tenure as a town councilor, Chris Legg took the lead in spearheading a cost-reduction initiative for the transfer station. He introduced innovative practices, like selling food and drink cans as scrap instead of single-stream recycling, resulting in savings of $150 per ton. That’s a lot of nickels! Chris is also a familiar face at the re-opened swap shop, dedicating his Saturdays to helping the team.

Hamlet meetings
To the editor:
On Oct. 4 the town of Skaneateles held a hamlet meeting concerning the future of the northern area consisting of Mottville and Skaneateles Falls in general.
A company was hired to show local residents of the area how things could change for the good of the neighborhood.
That was not the feeling I got from this meeting.
They presented pictures of existing homes some being built in the 1800s and letting us know most were built on about 1/2 acre.
From there they show us a map of an area of approximately 30 acres.
One drawing shows 15 building lots each consisting of two acres. Then they show us the same plot with 45 half acre lots.
The reasons for wanting half acre lots was supposed to make housing more affordable....affordable to whom?
I think of Lauder Lane in Skaneateles Falls which consists of tiny little lots.
These units are approaching the 500 thousand dollar mark.
Is that what affordable housing in Skaneateles should cost?
If I didn’t know better I would think this company was hired by someone wanting to get zoning changed so they could buy farm land and build housing on half acre lots instead of two acres.
Just think how much more profit that makes with 45 units instead of 15.
Everyone should be concerned and attend all future town board meetings concerning changes to our northern hamlets.

Liverpool field hockey gets win over C-NS
by PhiL bLACkwELL
Two games between the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse field hockey teams in the 2023 regular season have settled nothing so far.
Both games were close, tense, physical and emotional. Both ended in 2-1 scores, with the road team prevailing on each occasion and the Warriors getting even last Wednesday night at Bragman Stadium for its Sept. 11 defeat to the Northstars.
And it happened in overtime, a seven-on-seven format altered when, early in the extra period, one of
the C-NS players was sent off the field for a card.
Thus, just before the four-minute mark of the first extra period, the Warriors stopped a Northstars fast break and, off a long pass from Joelle Wike, two Liverpool players found their way around Northstars defenders and gave themselves a solo breakway.
Caitlyn Guilfoil held the ball, waited until goalie Olivia Planty went out to meet her, then passed it to Alexis McGregor, who put home the game-winner into the open net.
It all reinforced what the Warriors knew from its
first meeting - that it could stay right with the reigning Section III Class A champions for 60 minutes - or beyond, as it turned out on this night.
Coming off its first loss of the season (2-0 to Pittsford Mendon on Sept. 29), C-NS again found its attack frustrated in the early going, constantly possessing but running into a wave of Liverpool defenders led by Wike, Emma Esposito, Katia Flavin and Gabby Jondle.
And when the Northstars got penalty corners (nine of them by game’s end), they were constantly turned away, goalie Jenna
Hayes ultimately finishing the night with nine saves.
Inspired by this, the Warriors picked up its transition game and, midway through the second quarter, took a 1-0 lead when Gianna Carbone put home the rebound of a shot from Mia Berthoff.
Just before halftime, though, C-NS finally converted one of those penalty corners, Ayvah Romano getting the goal to make it 1-1, where it would stay through the entire half.
Again, the Northstars had most of the opportunities and, again, Hayes and Liverpool turned them back, leading to the OT
C-NS boys volleyball holds off ESM in four sets
by PhiL bLACkwELL
What the Cicero-North Syracuse boys volleyball team had shown taking a set off reigning state Division II champion Jamesville-DeWitt on Sept. 28 was that it had a top gear it could reach.
Yet in the Northstars’ lone head-to-head match last week, everything proved a challenge, C-NS needing plenty of perseverance and poise to get past East Syracuse Minoa in four sets.
It was the Spartans getting the opening set 25-23, earning the important late points. The Northstars absorbed this and built enough of a cushion in the second set to take it 25-21.
Then came the third and fourth sets, each of them tense and close. What made the difference was that, late in both sets, C-NS was able to get just enough power to win them 25-23 and 26-24 to take the match and improve to 7-3 overall.
Carter King put away 22 kills, helped up front by Joey Lukasiewicz’s eight kills and Luke Wieczorek’s six kills as Colin Dietz had three blocks to go with three kills. On the back line, Jack Waite had 39 assists and Josh Luce earned 13 digs.
On ESM’s side, Donovan Randall got 35 assists as Tyler Quarry and Austin Betts had nine kills apiece. Jacob McGuigan got eight kills, Ryan Sullivan adding five kills. Jayce Domres
had seven digs to go with four kills and Tommy Clonan earned 11 digs.\ Liverpool set out last Wednesday to avenge a Sept. 5 fourset defeat to Baldwinsville, only to have the same thing happen again. Having lost the opening set 25-20, the Warriors rebounded and controlled the second set, winning it 25-17. Then the two sides went back and forth through the third and fourth sets.
However, B’ville got most the important points and won those sets 25-23 and 25-22 to claim the match, overcoming 33 assists from Kellen Conway, who passed it to Jack DeForge (11 kills), Sean Frawley (nine kills) and Ben McHerron (seven kills) as Chase Loveless had five kills and Cody Badger four kills.
For B’ville, Ethan Davenport earning 11 kills and Xzavier Vanderstuow nine kills. Brendan Micho, aside from his 12 assists, managed five kills and three aces, Nate Mekker delivering 20 assists and Justin Diep improving to 13 digs.
C-NS played last Saturday at a tournament in Penfield and goes to Shenendehowa for another tournament this Saturday after facing Shaker on Friday. The Northstars would meet B’ville on Wednesday in between Liverpool’s road matches at Oswego and Fayeteville-Manlius.
Liverpool boys soccer to battle C-NS once again
by PhiL bLACkwELL
As they both got moved into the Class AAA ranks this fall, the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse boys soccer teams were aware that there was a better chance of a third post-season encounter to go with their usual home-and-home series this fall.
Whether Tuesday night’s showdown at the Gillette Road complex previews a Section III playoff meeting remains to be seen, but if they do so, it will be with the Warriors in the best position.
Liverpool was no. 12 in the latest state Class AA rankings and still undefeated at 7-0-4 going into a pair of games late last week against West Genesee, played less than 48 hours apart.
In the first encounter Thursday night at LHS Stadium, it only figured that the two sides would go to overtime without a goal – and that a mistake, and not a great offensive play, would help the Warriors pull it out 1-0.
WG had won six of its previous seven games, all shutouts, and through 80 minutes of regulation its defense again stood out, equaling what Liverpool did it terms of limiting real scoring opportunities.
Jacob McQuatters stopped all four shots he faced, and the two sides went to OT – where a Wildcats handball inside the 18-yard box set up a penalty kick that Antonio Wilson converted for the game-winner.
Then those same two sides went to Camillus on Saturday afternoon, and it ended up with the exact same result.
Only here, the Warriors didn’t need overtime, converting in the second half as Wilson assisted on Camden Farrell’s goal and hanging on the rest of the way for another 1-0 win, McQuatters recording six saves for his 11th shutout of the fall.
C-NS, meanwhile, found itself meeting state no. 10-ranked Baldwinsville last Tuesday night on its home turf and, again, struggled to generate chances in a 1-0 defeat to the Bees.
They were scoreless through the first half and then into the second half before B’ville was able to net the go-ahead goal. Niko Servider turned everything else back, finishing with seven saves, yet the Northstars could not pull even.
Now the Northstars had to face, on Thursday night, a Henninger side that was 7-2-2 and no. 15 in the state AAA rankings. And it was here that C-NS saw its offense, led by Jackson Petzoldt, awaken in a big way, which was needed to beat the Black Knights 4-3.
Controlling the early stages, the Northstars built a 2-0 halftime advantage. Then Henninger began to strike, converting three times in the final 40 minutes.
But C-NS was able to answer all of it and stay in front, Petzoldt getting his first three-goal varsity hat trick as Hunter Lawless also found the net and Titus Dimitroff earned an assist. For the second straight game, Servider made seven saves. Against another Syracuse City opponent, PSLA-Fowler, on Saturday afternoon, the Northstars could not hold an early advantage as the Falcons salvaged a 1-1 draw.
Gourav Adikhari’s first-half goal, assisted by Hunter Lawless, had C-NS in front, yet it could not stay there. Poe Hai Soe answered for PSLA-Fowler in the second half and the two sides worked through the rest of regulation and overtime without a resolution, Servider’s eight saves one more than Falcons counterpart Nick Nzabniesha.
Aside from the game with C-NS, Liverpool also has a big game this Saturday when it takes on Baldwinsville, the two sides starting at the possibility of another, more important encounter in the post-season.
drama - and ultimately moving Liverpool’s overall record to 10-1-1.
After all this, Liverpool found itself challenged Saturday by defending sectional Class B champion Holland Patent Saturday in chilly, wet conditions.
A second-quarter goal by Gabriel Way held up as the Golden Knights beat the Warriors 1-0. HP, aside from that goal, was in defensive mode most of the
time, but saw Ava Larry stop all eight Liverpool shots she faced.
This leads to a final week of the regular season where Liverpool twice will face Fayetteville-Manlius and, in between, travel Tuesday night to Rome Free Academy, a big game in terms of possible Class A playoff seeding. C-NS is home to face Baldwinsville Wednesday and Canastota Friday night.
Liverpool girls volleyball gets three set sweep of C-NS
by PhiL bLACkwELL
When they went head-to-head again last Wednesday night, the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse girls volleyball teams were both full of momentum and confidence gained from what they had done leading up to this match.
All of this made the result a bit surprising – not that the Warriors prevailed to go to 8-2 on the season, but the fact that it happened in a three-set sweep.
As it turned out, the opening set was crucial. C-NS was close, but when Liverpool pulled it out 25-22, it took charge and, in the next two sets, put away the Northstars by scores of 25-12 and 25-18.
Three different Warriors players flourished at the net. Sophie Sageer, Madison Ames and Lauren Poland each finished with 11 kills, Poland tacking on a pair of blocks as Sarah LaTocha added five kills.
Passing it to them, Allyson Crandall registered 20 assists and seven digs, helped by Addie Tanton and her 15 assists, while Lily Correll kept points alive with her 27 digs as Ames got nine digs.
On C-NS’s side, Kendall Rumble had seven assists and seven digs, with Allison Navarra gaining 21 digs. Up front, Grace Murray had six kills, with Hannah George earning five kills and Gabrielle Penizotto three kills.
They were each coming off big wins last Monday night, with C-NS throwing Fayetteville-Manlius from the unbeaten ranks and Liverpool outlasting West Genesee in five sets.
The Northstars were lucky that one of F-M’s top hitters, Kalyna Dannenberg, was out, but it still won the first set 25-19 and, after a 25-11 struggle in the second, claimed most of the key points to win the third set 2520 and the fourth 25-21 to pull it out.
C-NS got 24 digs from Navarra and 14 assists from Rumble to go with 11 digs. Murray led the front line with 10 kills, helped by seven kills from Piper Adams and five kills from Ellie Blumer.
F-M’s Rebekah Beasley earned 22 kills and 19 digs, while Gretchen Stoppacher managed 10 kills. Ava Zerillo earned 36 assists and Kathryn McNany got 21 digs.
This happened as Liverpool met West Genesee and, twice, fell behind, overwhelmed 25-13 in the first set and 25-11 in the third even as it pulled out the second 25-20.
Another comeback followed in the fourth set, the Warriors winning in 25-18, and in the final-set race to 15 points, Liverpool put away the Wildcats 15-10.
Moving from its loss to Liverpool, C-NS had its own match with West Genesee on Friday and was within inches of gaining a victory before the Wildcats pulled it out in five.
Having lost the first set 25-15, the Northstars won the next two sets 25-18 and 25-22, then in the fourth set found itself getting closer to ending it and gaining its second surprise win of the week.
But WG pulled itself back, won the fourth 28-26 and then dominated the final set 15-8, this despite Murray’s 18 kills and 20 digs and Adams getting 15 kills and 12 digs. Rumble earned 42 assists and 13 digs, Navarra getting 32 digs and Blumer 10 digs to go with her three aces.

The Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool girls soccer teams would confront one another in the regular season Tuesday night at LHS Stadium, not knowing if a third playoff encounter was ahead.
If that was the case, then the Northstars, even with its no. 10 state Class AAA ranking, might find that the Warriors have made up lots of ground on them since C-NS prevailed 2-0 the first time they met Sept. 19.
The biggest evidence of this was last Tuesday’s impressive performance by Liverpool against unbeaten, state Class AA no. 11-ranked East Syracuse Minoa, who had not lost this season – until it fell 2-0 to the Warriors.
Not only was ESM sporting an 8-0-2 mark, it had run over C-NS 7-0 earlier this season. But Liverpool, who had

started its season 1-4, had gone 4-1 since then and was ready to earn a marquee victory.
The Spartans were frustrated from the moment the game kicked off, each of its chances turned back by a Warriors defense that shadowed 100-goal scorer Leah Rehm all the way.
On the other end, Liverpool went up 1-0 by halftime, doubled that margin in the second half and saw Grace Sleeth protect it by recording 10 saves, rewarding the goals put up by Mia Wright and Alexa Marsh as Sydney Zingaro was credited with an assist.
Now rolling, the Warriors went to Auburn Thursday night and got a chance to unleash its attack in a significant manner, nearly getting to double digits in a 9-2 victory over the Maroons.
