In April, the Rippleton Center, a childcare facility in Cazenovia, announced its decision to transfer its business operations to a new nonprofit entity, Rippleton Inc.

The nonprofit is run by a volunteer board of directors that will help oversee the management and strategic direction of the center, which will continue to offer infant through school-age and summer programs at 3360 Thompson Rd.

According to Torrey Lansing, executive director and founder of the center, the change will not affect the availability of childcare, hours of operation, or general

curriculum.

Lansing founded the Rippleton Center four years ago with her husband, Brian Marti, after they purchased a 10,000-squarefoot building on 20 acres.

“I was at a crossroads in my life when I first saw this abandoned church at the end of Thompson Road,” said Lansing. “I have always been in the childcare industry, from teacher to director. My passion for early childhood education and working in my community to make a difference in the lives of young children was the driving force of the center.”

According to Lansing, she and Marti started planning their unique nature-based childcare program the day the church

went up for auction in February 2019.

“Almost a year later, after endless hours of renovations, hard work, and faith, the doors opened on March 4, 2020,” Lansing said.

“We were scheduled to have almost full enrollment and had employed full-time teachers. The COVID pandemic hit two weeks later. We never closed the doors; we stayed open and managed with the small number of children [who] had parents who were essential workers during the pandemic. I knew if I closed, I would not survive. So, we just did it. We worked long hours, my husband and I would spend hours at night doing intense cleaning, and we just kept going. It was not what

either of us expected after all we had already been through.”

Today, the Rippleton Center has 75 families coming through its doors daily.

Lansing described the center as a needed resource in the community and a special place.

“Our outdoor nature program is so unique to this area,” she said.

“On a rainy day, you will find all age groups and teachers outside in ‘uniforms;’ [everyone has] Oaki weather/rain suits that we

wear so we can truly enjoy splashing in puddles, making mud pies, sliding down a mud hill, and fully [taking advantage of] the benefits of the outdoors.”

According to Lansing, the center has decided to transfer its business operations to a nonprofit to help ensure its sustainability as a beacon of quality childcare in the Cazenovia area for many years to come.

The Cazenovia Public Library (CPL) recently announced some highlights of its spring/ summer 2024 adult program schedule.

To kick off the upcoming season, CPL Adult Programming and Service Coordinator

Renee Joseph has arranged a tour of the Stickley Museum in Fayetteville for Friday, June 7 at 11 a.m.

The Stickley Museum is located on the second floor of the original L. & J.G. Stickley factory at 300 Orchard St. above the Fayetteville Free Library. Opened in 2007, the exhibit gallery contains furniture and accessories from the earliest days of Stickley up to the present, as well as images and archival documents illustrating the company’s journey.

“The field trips are something I started last year when I came on board as adult programming coordinator, and they have been well received,” said Joseph. “I have even had requests to start them up again. The field trips that I have organized usually revolve around local

history, a local landmark or museum, or a local product or manufacturing in the area.”

Tour participants will meet at the library and drive themselves or carpool to the museum at 10:30 a.m. Those who plan to meet the rest of the group at the museum should let CPL know in advance.

According to the library, this program is for adults and families with older children. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

Registration is required and must be done by May 29. Individuals who need to cancel should let CPL know in advance.

The library is hosting two friendly competitions this spring/summer.

Pianist Geoff Clough will lead “Name That Tune” on Tuesday, June 4, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.

Participants can compete individually or team up with a friend. Clough will test competitors’ knowledge of various music categories, including top 40 hits, novelty songs, commercials, movie themes, jingles, television shows, and cartoons. Prizes will be awarded.

Then, on Friday, July 19, from 2 to 4 p.m., CPL will host a “Puzzle Palooza” team jigsaw puzzle competition.

Each team will receive a 500-piece puzzle to put together in 90 minutes. The first team to complete the puzzle wins. There will be prizes for first and second place. If no team completes the puzzle in the allotted time, the team with the fewest pieces left at the 90-minute mark wins. Register as a team or request to be placed on a team by July 8. Teams can have between two and five members.

Both competitions will take place in the Betsy Kennedy Community Room.

“The competitions are something I have not tried since starting in my position, but other libraries have done things like ‘Name That Tune’ and the ‘Puzzle Palooza’ puzzle competition, and they were popular at their libraries,” said Joseph. “We have lots of patrons who check out the various puzzles we have here, so I thought this might be something that is not only enjoyable but also encourages connection.

As for ‘Name That Tune,’ who doesn’t love live piano entertainment?”

Community members are also invited to the Community Room on Thursday, June 13, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., for an essential oil workshop with Laura Riposo-Hackney. Participants will each create an 8-ounce bottle of non-toxic bug spray to take home and use throughout the summer.

Space is limited and registration is required by June 1. A $15 deposit is also required to hold each person’s spot; it will be refunded at the event. Any cancelations must be made by June 6 to claim a refund. Deposits will be collected at the circulation desk before the event. “As per our mission at the library, my aim is to bring programming to our patrons that will strengthen community by engaging in history, connecting people, inspiring lifelong learning, and transforming lives,” said Joseph. “The Cazenovia Public Library community is a vibrant one, so I am hoping people will join in the fun.”

Village planning board, historic preservation committee mull redevelopment project

On May 13, the planning board and historic preservation/ architectural review committee (HPC) of the Village of Cazenovia held a joint public hearing to gather input on a proposal for a new four-story mixed-use commercial and residential building on the corner of Albany Street and Center Street.

The project site includes the former NAPA store at 99 Albany St., the former gas station at 103 Albany St., and the blue house behind those buildings at 7 Center St.

The public hearing was held to consider the application of Albany Street Holding, LLC for a special use and site plan approval, re-subdivision approval, architectural approval, and a cer-

tificate of compatibility to allow the construction of the mixeduse building. The project also includes associated utility and street connections.

Chairman Rich Huftalen reported that before opening the previous night’s meeting to public comment, the planning board and HPC were presented with the applicant’s current plans, which had been updated after receiving feedback at prior meetings.

Huftalen said the latest plans were well-received by both boards, which offered some comments and suggestions about certain architectural details.

During the public hearing, the sentiment of the community members in attendance was largely positive, according to Huftalen.

Beloved mother, daughter, sister and friend

Kelly Jean Partenheimer Free passed away peacefully at home Monday, May

13, 2024, with her family by her side.

Kelly was born in Peekskill, N.Y., Feb. 26, 1969. She grew up in Peekskill with her three siblings Karen, Leanne and Michelle. Kelly was always regarded for her big heart and sense of humor.

Her kind heart led her to become an LPN which allowed her to care for people as a professional nurse.

Kelly was a beloved mother, daughter, sister and friend.

She is survived by her children, Stephanie Dunleavy, Christopher Free, and Daniel Free; sisters, Karen Scannell, Leanne Burrell and Michelle Christiana; mother, Marie Knapp; grandchildren, Jack and Kolton Dunleavy; and her faithful companion Lilly the chihuahua.

She was predeceased by her father, Emil Partenheimer.

Kelly’s favorite pastime was walking Lilly at the beach and listening to the waves crash against the shore.

“In remembrance, life echoes the rhythm of the ocean’s waves, gently recalling the moments of struggle and serenity, forever etched in the sands of time.”

Post 88’s observance will, as usual, feature both a parade and a program presented at Cazenovia Memorial Park.

The parade will form in front of Cazenovia Central School on Emory Avenue. Units should line up in their designated positions at 10 a.m. with the parade step-off scheduled at 10:30 a.m. from the corner of Emory Avenue and Forman Street.

The symbolism of the red poppy and its association with Memorial Day originated from the horrors of World War I. During that “War to End All Wars,” much of the fighting took place in Western Europe, where the countryside was repeatedly fought over in the devastating trench warfare that characterized that war. What had once been beautiful landscapes were turned into mud, where very little would grow. However, red poppies managed to thrive in that war-scarred soil.

In 1920, the American Legion named the poppy the National Memorial Flower to memorialize the soldiers who died during that terrible war. In 1924, the legion made the distribution of poppies a national program to support needy veterans. Today, the red poppy is worn around Memorial Day to honor those men and women who have given their last full measure of devotion in serving our nation in any of our battles against any of our enemies.

The memorial wreath will be laid by U.S. Navy veteran and Mrs. Roger Davenport of New Woodstock. Many members of Post 88 will also make significant contributions to the program.

Finally, Post 88 recognizes the National Moment of Remembrance Act that was signed into law in 2000 by Congress and then-President Clinton. The act encourages all Americans to pause at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day for a minute of silence in memory of

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is usually a festive time in many communities.

Usually seen as an unofficial start to summer, many gather for parades and to listen to guest speakers and host parties and cookouts.

But it is a day that is about much more than that.

Even in recent years when COVID-19 disrupted the usual celebration of the Memorial Day, the true meaning, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice, persisted and was honored by many.

This year, as Memorial Day approaches, many of the traditional celebrations are preparing to honor and celebrate the day and the people it recognizes.

While it is great to gather with friends and family and celebrate the day, Memorial Day and its true meaning are something well worth remembering and well worth putting a greater focus on and sharing with friends and family as we prepare to celebrate this special day.

The parades, the gatherings, the cookouts, the long weekend are all things we can share in and enjoy, but taking the time to consider the tradition, the history and the countless people this day represents is incredibly important.

While the short answer is that Memorial Day is about honoring those who gave their lives serving their country, there is a great deal of history behind this day and it is a day that reminds us that remembering those who served and sacrificed deserve our respect regardless of the date.

Memorial Day goes back to what was known as Decoration Day starting in 1868 following the Civil War.

The Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service.

In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday in May. While this move created the three day weekend so many have come to associate with Memorial Day, locally many organizations from municipal governments to VFWs have worked to maintain a sense of the true meaning behind the day.

There will be ceremonies honoring those who served, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice as wreaths are laid at memorials. There will be guest speakers who will share their experiences and insights as veterans, people who have served and people who understand the sacrifice others made and there will be time to reflect on what this means and how much those who served and sacrificed have meant to this country.

We hope that everyone, whether they are attending a community celebration or hosting their own private gathering with friends and family, will keep the true meaning of Memorial Day in mind in their own way. Whether it is with a moment of reflection or silence or sharing stories of loved ones who served and sacrificed, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice is really what Memorial Day is all about.

A FRuitFuL LinEAGE

I gave my daughter a fig tree for Mother’s Day. I gave her a fig tree because, like olive trees, they are old, ancient, trailing the use of thousands of years. There is evidence that fig trees were the first plant species to be cultivated, even before grains. They have the weighty gravitas of time and use. They are found everywhere the climate is suitable and, in some cases, like here, where the weather is on the edge.

There are homes, particularly on the north side of the city of Syracuse, where each house had its fig tree, the owners carefully wrapping it against the winter cold or bringing it inside to a less frigid area or, and I have seen this, bending the precious fig tree and burying it to be resurrected in the spring. My daughter will no doubt plant her tree in a large container that can be moved inside during the inclement weather. It’s a ritual that is most appropriate for her as the mother that she is. The care of the tree, though little, is crucial and it represents the soul of being a mother, a caring for, a must-do because of the outcome.

I hope she loves her tree as it grows over the years, its lovely, lobed leaves

I recommend an old recipe that calls for stuffing a fresh fig with gorgonzola cheese and wrapping the fig with bacon. The wrapped fig is then put in the oven at a high temperature until the bacon is cooked. Pierced with a pick of some sort, accompanied by a glass of Rioja or Sangiovese … that’s a good reason to have a fig tree.

I gave my daughter a fig tree hoping that, as it grows, she will share it with others. Fig trees are easily propagated and their many varieties are the result of cross breeding by fig fanciers throughout the world, yielding a wide variety of tastes.

I gave her a fig tree to share the experience of growth and harvest together with her husband and her two sons - my beloved grandsons, an earthy way of being family.

I gave Emily a fig tree because she will love it. It is the romance of ancient times, storied importance in the bible, elevated in literature and poetry, the reliability that comes from its patrimony, the joy of its fruitage. I gave her the fig tree to carry on the love of gardening from her great-

130 years Ago – May 24, 1894

The hotel firm of E.J. Pratt & Son, which for the past 10 years has conducted very successfully the Cazenovia House in this place, will dissolve partnership on May 31, after which time Chas. E. Pratt, having purchased his father’s interest, will continue the business under his own name.

Mr. Pratt is one of the most successful and respected hotel proprietors this place has ever had and he will be greatly missed by the many patrons of his house who will extend to him their best wishes.

The reason for retiring from active business is failing health. He will remain with his son during the summer, when he intends to return to Fayetteville, his former place of residence.

The Cazenovia House has a large and increasing home and transient trade which will be as heartily welcomed under its new management as formerly.

115 years Ago – May 20, 1909

Last Friday was the occasion of a great victory for the seniors of Cazenovia Seminary.

Two of their number took the 4 o’clock train, Thursday P. M. for DeRuyter, where they completed arrangements for their picnic.

Friday morning the rest of the class boarded the early morning train for DeRuyter. At nine o’clock they were driven to Tioughnioga Lake where they enjoyed a forenoon of fishing.

A most excellent fish dinner was served at Hugh Root’s hotel. Everything went along nicely until 2 p.m. when a telephone message came saying that the juniors were on their way to tie up their senior friends.

Immediately the seniors telephoned to Mr. Burtis of DeRuyter and with his fast team he drove them to Shed’s Corners.

Here they telephoned to New Woodstock for rigs which took them to Cazenovia.

Tired but victorious, the jolly crowd arrived at the home of Frank Dwyer at 8 o’clock, where a fine supper was in readiness.

Thus, for the first time in years, the seniors had their picnic and returned home without seeing a junior.

100 years Ago – May 22, 1924

All but a few of the schools of the Second Supervisory District of Madison County have made returns from the results of the annual school meeting held May 6

More voters turned out this year than common and more women were elected to school offices than has been customary.

The average was about 10 voters to a meeting. Perryville led the list with 48 voters present.

District No. 3, DeRuyter failed to get out the three voters necessary for a meeting. District No. 15 Cazenovia, and No. 4 Fenner, each had but the three necessary voters to hold meetings and several had but four. The proposition to substitute a school nurse in place of medical inspection was voted down by a majority of the districts.

The one to purchase library books was carried in all but a few and it is to be hoped that these books will be the ones that the teacher needs instead of something a smooth talking book agent wishes to sell.

85 years Ago – May 25, 1939

Purchase of the Delphi Falls tract of 84 acres, including an upper and lower falls, a pavilion with living quarters, 24 brick fire places, swimming pool and other picnic conveniences, is announced by Michael Antil of Cortland.

Mr. Antil is the sales manager for Durkee Bakery, Homer. The purchase was made after the family motored past the park three weeks ago and were surprised to see it for sale, he said. The family had been looking for a summer place for the last five or six years.

Mr. Antil has presented the park to his wife and six children, ranging from Mary Margaret, 14, to Paul, four months – and the family will operate the place. Each child, with the exception of the youngest, will have his duties. The operation of the park will give the youngsters an aim in life and will teach them responsibility and managerial ability Mr. Antil believes.

There will be other adult workers, but so far as is possible, the family will operate the park.

And I gave Emily a fig tree because I remember a visit to what is claimed to be the house of Leonardo Da Vinci in Italy. The house was plain, small with only two rooms. It stood in a grove of olive trees that belonged to his mother. The trees were much older than Leonardo or his mother and continue to produce fruit today. Vinci, the town, has passed on the privilege of harvest to someone else. We were privileged to watch the current owner of the harvest gather the olives in nets that surrounded the trees. There is something about olive trees and fig trees that bind us to the earth, to those who went before and those who will follow.

A fig tree is like the eclipse or the northern lights. It is like spring after winter and the crisp feelings of autumn. It is beyond the technical age in which we live, an authenticity greater than the electric grid, an eternal capture of a universal truth. It’s one way of saying, “remember” the love of those who went before.

The Village of Cazenovia is at a crucial point in its trajectory. I am running for village trustee in the June 18th election to bring my skills, experience, and energy to the board to help us move towards a brighter future.

Professionally, I hold a master’s degree in city and regional planning from Cornell University and am a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP). I have over 15 years of community development experience both internationally and domestically. For nearly seven years I was the executive director of the Partnership for Community Development (PCD) in Hamilton, NY, where I brought in over $5 million of funding for community initiatives. During my tenure, I oversaw housing initiatives, the expansion of local recreational resources, and launched Madison County’s first certified New York State Business Incubator. Our incubator helped businesses at all stages of growth and allowed us to provide thousands of dollars in funding to businesses. For my work at PCD, I was named to the 2019 Central New York Business Journal 40 under Forty list. I recently started my own small business to provide planning services to municipalities and organizations. Last year, I volunteered my time and wrote a $50,000 grant that was awarded to Caz Life for events and marketing that they are currently using for their exciting work.

I live in the village with my husband and three year old son, and you’ve probably seen us walking around town. We chose to have our family in Cazenovia specifically for the walkability and community character. I’d like to bring the perspective of a young family to the Village Board.

There are a number of issues facing Cazenovia that I’d like to work on if elected. Here are a few that I think are most important:

Increase the vitality of the Village’s downtown business core and encourage further investment

Improve pedestrian infrastructure

Improve parks and recreational amenities

Increase resident engagement

Improve amenities for youth and families

Find a viable and sustainable future for the Cazenovia College campus that enriches the community

Many people I have spoken to while exploring my run for village trustee share the concerns I have: that while the village is in a precarious position, it maintains a huge amount of potential and with some creativity and inventiveness, we can chart a new and courageous path forward. I believe my professional experience and personal commitment to improving the community will help me to be an agent for this type of positive change. Lansing and Marti will continue to own the land and building, and Lansing will serve as vice president of the board and executive director.

During its May 13 regular monthly meeting, the Cazenovia Town Board authorized the town supervisor to execute a letter of support to Empire State Development for a grant application submitted by the Cazenovia Area Community Development Association for the redevelopment of 99-103 Albany Street.

The goal is that the board’s hands-on approach will enable the center to make strides in enhancing its program offerings, recognizing and supporting its staff, maintaining its facility and grounds, and ensuring the security and safety of its children.

The current board members have career expertise in finance/accounting, daycare operations/management, early childhood education, marketing, communications, events, and entrepreneurship.

According to Lansing, Board President Adam O’Neill and his wife, Anya Woods-O’Neill, have had a connection to the Rippleton Center since day one.

“[Adam] shook our hands the day of the auction as a community member and neighbor,” Lansing said. “And I remember when we told him our vision, he said, ‘Wow! That is amazing. [I] don’t think anyone here had that vision coming into this auction today.’”

Woods-O’Neill created the Rippleton Center brand and website, and the couple’s two children have attended the center since the beginning.

“As parents of Rippleton Center kids, Anya and I see the positive impact every day,” said O’Neill. “Torrey and Brian’s vision and investment have created a very special place for kids in our community to learn, explore, create, collaborate, develop confidence, and get out into nature daily. We’re honored to have the opportunity to help Rippleton Cen -

ery, addressing the needs of residents most in need with dedication and compassion. The letter recognizes that the village and local partners have worked for many years to find a development solution for those properties, which have been vacant and blighted for nearly two decades.

Casey Masters, vice president of the board, is also a father of two Rippleton Center attendees.

His six-year-old participates in the after-school program, and his five-yearold is at the center full-time.

“They come home every day covered in mud and laden with craft projects, excitedly telling me about the tree fort they made while out on a hike, or the leprechaun trap they built, or the funny dance their teacher taught them,” said Masters.

His family started at the Rippleton Center three and a half years ago after hearing about it from a friend and receiving an after-hours walkthrough of the facility from Lansing.

Masters recalled that he was blown away by the program’s focus on the outdoors, emotional education, and problem-solving.

“Even the indoor crafts I saw involved leaves, twigs, and pinecones,” he said. “Where a lot of daycares had a small fenced-in area with plastic toys everywhere, Rippleton Center had logs, rocks, and wide-open spaces. [Also,]

parents who have been at Rippleton for any amount of time will tell you it is as much a community hub as anything; [our] social sphere is based around the connections we have made amongst the Rippleton parents. So, when I got a call from [a friend] explaining that he was going to help set up a board of directors to help Torrey focus more on the quality of care and less on the administrative minutiae, I was happy to lend a hand. After all, we [would] be spending time with the other board members either way.”

The board’s other current members are Lynton Slater, treasurer; Liz Williams, secretary; and Katie Whitaker, vice president early education.

The board is looking for several additional members, especially individuals with experience in law, grant writing, insurance, or fundraising. Meetings are held monthly.

“[The Rippleton Center] has never been a ‘me’ thing,” said Lansing. It is a ‘we’ thing, from every employee that has come through the door, [to the] children, families, and the entire community. What makes the Rippleton Center special is we are family.”

Lansing added that she is particularly indebted to her husband for his unwavering belief in her and her vision.

“He loves the center just as much as I do,” she said. “It wouldn’t have happened without his support and dedication.”

wife, mother, friend

At the tender age of 10 Jake Steigerwald penned an essay for a Mother’s Day contest run by the Syracuse Herald American. Small wonder that with the subject he had to work with, the work easily took first prize. Already a loving mother of six, the kind, supportive and sensible manner that marked Patsy’s entire life was recognized not for the first, or last, time.

Patsy was born to second generation Irish Americans and loved being 100% Irish! Patsy’s father, Ned White, traveled for work and was living in Detroit, MI, when Patsy was born. Patsy’s mother, Loretto Heffernan White, missed her family back in Cazenovia, and when Patsy was 9, they moved back to stay.

Patsy met Frank Steigerwald after he returned from the Korean War. Patsy and Frank married in 1958 and had twins a year later, Amy and Jake. They went on to have eight children in 11 years. The children were raised in Cazenovia in a wonderful home that holds cherished memories for both family and friends.

OBITUARIES

Patsy was admired as a loving mother to all eight children, a loving wife and a loving friend and neighbor to many, being kind to everyone she met.

Patsy was always active – in body, mind and spirit. An avid reader and a splendid gardener (famous for her sweet peas and strawberries), she found time for knitting and made a hand-sewn quilt for each of her grandchildren. She volunteered her time with countless hours teaching Sunday School, caring for the sick and winning the lifetime achievement award as World’s Best Hockey Mom.

Patsy and Frank moved from Cazenovia to Massachusetts in 2011 to be close to four of their eight children. Following Frank’s passing in 2015, Patsy struggled valiantly with health issues. Her mind remained keen and alert, and maintained close connections with her family and friends. Patsy’s desire was to stay in her home until she passed. All eight of her children from across the country were able to each spend time with her in her final weeks. Patsy passed peacefully

Caz boys tennis repeats as sectional champions

Even if it seemed inevitable given the talent and experience on hand, the Cazenovia boys tennis team’s run to another Section III Class C championship was still a product of lots of hard work. And it culminated last Friday at Nottingham High School, where the Lakers turned back the challenge of Manlius Pebble Hill 4-1 to again claim the sectional title.

Equaling the 4-1 win it earned over the Trojans in the regular season, the Lakers quickly got two points in singles when Traian Cherciu beat Jasmin Zaman and Garret Lounsbury topped Jon Howard by equal 6-0, 6-1 margins.

It was Gabe Reagan who clinched the team title in third singles, winning the first set 6-3 over Savir Gambhir and then breaking serve late in the second set to take it 6-4 and gain the third point. Still, two doubles matches were left, and both would go to three sets.

Cy Lurie and Ethan Camp could not hold an early lead in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 defeat to Andy and Sam Lurvey, but Evan Molloy and Max Reger, after dropping

their first set 6-4 to Abe Salomon and Devin Trikha, won the next two sets by that exact same score. The sectional run began last Monday when the top-seeded Lakers blanked no. 8 seed Holland Patent 5-0.

Lounsbury’s 6-3, 6-2 singles win over HP’s Jeff Dewar was the closest match. Reagan blanked Ethan Paladino 6-0, 6-0 as Molloy, getting a turn in singles, handled Conner Swift 6-1, 6-1. Cherciu paired with Reger to beat Chris Kelly and Nick Sheets 6-1, 6-2 as Camp and Lurie beat Mason Rasmussen and Tyler Tydesley 6-1, 6-1.

Up against no. 4 seed Mount Markham in the semifinals a day later, Cazenovia again had full command of the match, putting away the Mustangs 5-0 to earn a trip to the championship round.

Back in singles, Cherciu put away Bryant Denzz 6-0, 6-1, and by those same scores Reagan rolled past Robert Huntley as Lounsbury got the 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Edmond Yang.

A third 6-0, 6-1 match had, in doubles, Molloy and Reger defeat Madaline Briggs and Aubrey Hartman, while Lurie and Camp worked their way past Oscar Yang and Hailey Fitch 6-0. 6-2.

Caz girls track dominates at league championship meet

Everything is working for the Cazenovia girls track and field team just as the post-season push gets underway.

All the Lakers did was win 11 different events, with second-place finishes in 12 events, on the way to winning last Monday’s Onondaga High School League Liberty division small-school championshp at Hannibal.

Amassing 266 points, Cazenovia more than doubled the total of runner-up Marcellus (117.5) and the rest of the seven-team field in an overwhelming performance that included 17 first-team All-League honors and 15 second-team honors – 32 of the 56 awarded.

Again Susie Pittman led the way, earning first team recognition in four events. She won the 200 meter dash in 27.68 seconds, captured the triple jump at 35 feet 5 inches and won both the high jump (4’10”) and pole vault (9’6” despite a persistent rain throughout the meet.

Reid McMurtrie also stood out, earning first team honors in the 400-meter dash (1:02.06) and anchoring the 4x800 to victory in their fastest time of the season with

a 2:28.8 leg. Olivia Ruddy, Delanie Dowling and Maura Phillips also added to the team’s 10:16.67 total as they hit the sectional state qualifying meet standard for the first time this season.

Izzy Stromer-Galley anchored the team’s other gold medal relay with Audie Spring, Anna Reksc and Claire Marris adding to the winning time of 52.84 seconds. StromerGalley also contributed a pair of silver medal finishes in the 100 (13.48) and 200 (28.17) meter sprints. Spring got on the scoreboard four times, earning points in the 100, long jump and triple jump.

Cazenovia dominated several events with 1-2 finishes including the high jump, where Meghan Mehlbaum joined Pittman in clearing 4’8”, and pole vault, where just behind Pitman Sofie Reger had a career-best vault of 9 feet.

In the 2000 meter steeplechase Dinah Gifford won in 8:32.17 and Zoey Gagne was second in 8:34.74). Gagne added a third in the 1,500-meter run behind Lily Kogut (5:24.74) and Abbie Comeau (5:24.75), who hit the finish line together. Comeau added a victory of her own in the 3,000 in a personal best time of 11:29.70 with Gifford also capturing third.

Mehlbaum achieved three silver medal

finishes as she added scores in the 400 hurdles (1:11.70) and 4x400 meter relay to her high jump tally. Alyssa Wardell, Ava Eno and Maura Phillips also added to the Lakers’ 4:23.98 total in the relay, with Phillips adding a second place effort of 2:35.24 in the 800.

Claire Marris was the team’s other silver medalist on the track as she took second in the 100 meter hurdles in exactly 16 seconds and added a third in the 400 hurdles.

Caroline Mehlbaum earned two career bests as she backed up Marris in the 100 hurdles at 18.01 and added a third score in the 400 hurdles at 1:12.67.

Maddie Rothfeld led the team in the throws, earning first team all league honors in the shot put throwing it 30’11 1/2”. Teammates Olivia Morse (82’4”) and Becca Brooks (80’7”) finished 2-3 in the discus as each hit career bests.

Angela Moskvich was the team’s final individual all-league honoree, earning second team honors in the pentathlon with a career best point total of 1,789 points which included best-ever efforts in the 800 meter run, long jump and high jump along the way.

Armed with a proven ace in Jack Donlin and plenty of experience from nearly earning a championship a year ago, the Cazenovia baseball team put up some more strong performances in the last week of the regular season.

The Lakers hosted Clinton last Tuesday afternoon and got five more shutout innings from Donlin on the mound plus ample run support

in the course of a 12-0 victory over the Comets.

With a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, Donlin gave Cazenovia the lead for good, and then Taven Reilley went deep moments later to make it back-to-back home runs.

All told, the Lakers had 11 runs in that first inning. Joey Awald drove in three of them, with Jacob Cox adding a pair of RBIs as Nico Segall and Cy Abbott also drove in runs.

Given that early cushion, Donlin only had

to work five innings, allowing one hit and getting seven strikeouts, not realizing that he would pitch again later in the week.

The game that Cazenovia started at Skaneateles last Monday did not end until Friday, lasting until the ninth inning, when the visiting Lakers finally took control and produced a 6-3 victory.

Twice in regulation, Cazenovia rallied, from a 2-0 deficit in the fourth and a 3-2 deficit in the fifth with Reilley’s solo home run. Then it netted three runs in the top of the ninth to break the 3-3 tie, with Jacob Cox’s single scoring the go-ahead run and Reilley adding a two-run single to give him four RBIs overall. Though Izaak Gilbert started the game, Donlin took over in the fourth and went the rest of the way, 5 2/3 innings in all, only allowing two hits and striking out 10 while also getting two hits and an RBI at the plate.

Cazenovia boys lacrosse falls to Homer in overtime

Even if future Cazenovia boys lacrosse teams will have the benefit of an artificial turf home field full-time, there is still something special about going out to the Sean Googin Sports Complex for a big game.

That was the case again last Tuesday night when the Lakers honored its seniors and engaged in a tense, close battle with Homer before taking an 8-7 overtime defeat to the Trojans.

A Friday doubleheader with Jordan-Elbridge followed. In the first game, Reilley pitched quite well, only allowing three hits and striking out six, but the Lakers lost 3-0 to the Eagles as Wilmot got the only hit off Abby DelFavero, who struck out 10.

The second game took a lot longer.

And the Lakers never got on the board in a 19-0 loss to the Mustangs, who limited Cazenovia to seven shots overall. Ives had 14 saves, but Marcellus was led by Nick Rayfield’s six goals and Adam Rayfield’s four goals and two assists.

Down 3-1, the Lakers appeared to pull out a big victory when it scored twice in the fifth to tie it and twice more in the seventh inning.

However, J-E also got two runs in the seventh and it went to three extra innings before the Eagles scored in the 10th, handing the Lakers a 6-5 defeat. Wilmot got two hits and two RBIs, while Gianna Comino also drove in a run.

the Cazenovia boys tennis team repeated as Section iii Class C team champions last Friday when it defeated Manlius Pebble Hill 4-1 in the finals.

Was proprietor of Hilltop Herbery

Mary Therese Reeve, 85, of Cazenovia, passed on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Milwaukee, WI she was the daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Cronin) Bunnell.

A sweet, kind soul devoted to her loved ones she will be greatly missed. Mary was a great gardener and proprietor of Hilltop Herbery in Cazenovia as well as an active member of the Manlius Herb Society.

She is lovingly survived by her husband of 58 years, Michael, daughters Mary Pat Reeve of Arlington, MA, Maggie Tompkins of Wolcott, N.Y., and son Patrick of Cazenovia; and nine grandchildren: Matthew, Michael, Emma, Madeline, Theresa, Simon, Callum, Gwendolyn and Joy.
