A SHOW OF HANDS

Painful hand conditions ranging from arthritis to carpal tunnel syndrome can cause numbness and finger weakness that inhibit the ability to work, play, and communicate effectively. Much of this problem is traced to repetitive-stress injuries involving the tendons of the wrists and hands caused by repeated motions on keyboards. According to the American Society of Hand Therapists, cell phones, smart phones, electronic planners, digital music players, and other similar devices, which require prolonged gripping and typing with the thumbs, could be responsible for carpal tunnel syndrome and tendinitis. Even old-fashioned gardening and home repair work can be culprits. Fortunately, the physical therapist can help treat painful hands with strengthening, stretching, and range-of-motion

Saving a spot at the office

Many readers and residents may already know about the Cazenovia Republican’s local office. For those that don’t: we have a space on the second floor of Common Grounds Coffeehouse, located at 35 Albany St. As I slowly settle into the world of journalism and my new role as editor, I’ve already learned some valuable lessons about the From the town and village of Cazenovia. For instance, I recently discovered that two-hour parking is strictly enforced in the Common Grounds parking lot. After I had made numerous drives to the Eagle Newspapers office on James Street in Syracuse, our executive editor recommended I keep office hours in Cazenovia. So on Tuesday morning, I settled into my chair in the office above Common Grounds for a nice long day of answering e-mails and writing articles. After a few hours of work, punctuated with cups of coffee and lunch from Dave’s Diner, I decided to head homeward. As I approached my car, I discovered a bright orange envelope, nestled between my snow-covered windshield and wiper blade. I was initially upset, seeing as I had strategically parked on the opposite side of the lot where “Two hour limit” signs were sprinkled intermittently. However, inside the envelope was not a ticket, but a “Parking Courtesy.” The village of Cazenovia and Chamber of Commerce will waive a parking violation, if it is not within six months of another. Infringements are documented by a parking officer, and offenders are asked to sign and date the courtesy “tickets” and mail them to the village office at 90 Albany St. Seeing as there is ample (unlimited) parking along Albany Street, my office hours can remain from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Feel free to stop by and see the office, drop off material, or just say “hello.” If you wish to reach me outside of office hours, e-mail editor@cazenoviarepublican.com or call 434-8889 ext. 338. Native to the warm climate of Southeast Asia it is typically grown as a houseplant. This fragrant herb gives off a very heavy aroma that is spicy, musty and sweet. The scent actually improves with age. It was once used to treat headaches, colds, nausea, infections and digestive problems. Rowing Club moved into the facility in early January and officially opened to members on Jan. 11. Their temporary location is a welcomed change, as the club formerly operated from Gypsy Bay Park on the south shore of Cazenovia Lake and stored their rowing shells at various locations. Rooms that once housed CAVAC’s dispatch center are now filled with ergometers and weight lifting equipment. The large garage that was once used to store emergency vehicles will soon be converted into the club’s boathouse. Approximately 80 members currently populate the rowing club and President Bill Carroll hopes to increase membership in the future. “We have a really great group of people here. Everyone on the board is very active, as well as parents of the kids that row in the club, they like to get involved and help out,” Carroll said, “There are a lot of great opportunities for students to receive scholarships, if they have rowing experience.” The club includes members of varying ages, offering a “scholastic” division for the school-aged participants and a “masters” group for the adult members. With the new location, all members are able to train regularly. Carpenter’s Barn was built in 1889,

You can sometimes find patchouli at nurseries or garden centers or from specialty growers such as Almost Eden Plants (online at almostedenplants.com) or Logee’s Greenhouse (logees.com) Patchouli plants will bloom in the fall with tiny, white flowers that give off the tell tale aroma of patchouli. Place your patchouli plant where it will get indirect sunlight for most of the day. Use a rich potting soil with good drainage. They do best with a soil pH level between 5.5 and 6.2. Always keep the soil moist, but not soggy. Don’t let the soil dry out between watering. It’s a good idea to check the soil every day. Just poke your finger into the soil up to your first knuckle, and water if the soil feels dry. During the winter when growth is slower you can reduce watering to about once every three or four days. Because most homes have low humidity you can mist the foliage every

day. Once a month fertilize your plant Barbano with a diluted liquid house plant food. You can easily propagate is by taking garden patchouli cuttings and rooting them in moist sand. Because patchouli is a fast grower, you can prune it back to keep it bushy. Patchouli plants can become infected with leaf blight. If you notice any leaves with many dark spots covering them, immediately pick off the infected leaves and destroy them. To harvest your patchouli simply cut off several leaves and place them in a loosely closed paper bag to dry. The scent will fade after a few days only to return even stronger and more powerful after drying for several weeks. You can use the leaves as insect repellents or to perfume your clothes or even distilled into an essential oil. Grow patchouli in your house and you just may enter the Age of Aquarius, and the only pot you will need is the pot that you grow patchouli in.

Community Yarn concert Friday

Friday Feb. 4 Grammy-nominated band, Yarn, will play the Nelson Odeon. This Brooklyn-based Americana roots band follows in the fine tradition of artists such as Gram Parsons, Ryan Adams, Jerry Garcia, and David Grisman. They weave a fresh sound that turns on hipsters and fans of country music alike with technically impressive song crafting and universal tales from the road of life. Yarn’s first two albums releases, the debut “Yarn” and the Grammy-nominated “Empty Pockets”, both received great critical acclaim and also include guest appearances by Edie Brickell, Tony Trishka, and Caitlan Cary (Whiskeytown) on “Empty Pockets”. CNN national security analyst to speak at Cazenovia Forum CNN national security analyst Peter Bergen will discuss U.S. military and intelligence involvement in Afghanistan at the Cazenovia Forum, at 7 p.m. Friday Feb. 11 at the Catherine Cummings Theatre, 9 Lincklaen St. in Cazenovia. The event is free of charge and no reservations or tickets are required. Bergen, whose lecture is titled “Obama’s War,” is perhaps best known as one of the few Westerners to have met the world’s most-wanted man, Osama bin Laden, when in 1997, as a producer for CNN, he interviewed the 9/11 mastermind. “This is an exciting opportunity for people in our community to hear and engage with one of the world’s premier journalists and a longtime expert on the global terrorist threat,” said Jim Bruno, a member of the Cazenovia Forum board of directors. “In addition, Peter Bergen is a keen observer of the U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, and he will be sharing his views on the conflict and answer audience questions.” For more than 15 years, Bergen has traveled extensively throughout Afghanistan, Pakistan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and more recently Iraq to report on national

security and the al-Qaeda network. His latest book, “The Longest War: The Enduring Conflict between America and al-Qaeda,” takes a close and critical look at America’s decadelong war on terrorism. “Drawing on vast firsthand knowledge of the region and mining a huge stock of primary and secondary material, including his own interviews with combatants, the book’s depth of detail and breadth of insight make it one of the more useful analyses of the ongoing conflict,” said Publisher’s Weekly in its review. Bergen’s previous book, “The Osama bin Laden I Know: An Oral History of al-Qaeda’s Leader,” was named one of the best nonfiction books of 2006 by The Washington Post. CNN produced a two hour documentary, “In the Footsteps of bin Laden,” based on the book that aired around the fifth anniversary of 9/11. He is also the author of “Holy War, Inc.: Inside the Secret World of bin Laden,” a New York Times bestseller that has been translated into 18 languages. A documentary based on Holy War, Inc., which aired on National Geographic Television, was nominated for an Emmy in the research

Peter Bergen category. Bergen’s work has appeared in numerous publications including the New York Times, Washington Post, Vanity Fair, the Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, and the International Herald Tribune. In addition to being CNN’s national security analyst, Bergen is a Schwartz Fellow at the New America Foundation. He is also an adjunct lecturer in public policy at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University as well

as a research fellow at New York University’s Center on Law and Security. The Cazenovia Forum was established in 2006 by community members focused on promoting the understanding and discussion of national and international issues. By organizing and underwriting lecture events featuring nationally-known experts, the group intends to further Cazenovia’s commitment to knowledge-seeking and community involvement.

RWM publishers Barbara McSpadden and Kelly Breuer bought the magazine in August 2009. Syracuse Woman Magazine is “different from the ‘typical’ women’s magazines you see at the store, she said. “It’s not only local to the Central New York region, but it also features real, everyday women who represent what it is to be a ‘Syracuse woman,’ Jadran said. “It contains realistic ideals and positive reinforcement through an array of content. Each edition of SWM features content about local women who are inspiring one another through education, entrepreneurial achievements, community leadership and governmental pursuits. This made the interior of the room have the appearance of a large tent in the center with several smaller ones about it, and the idea was taken from the arrangement of the tents at the English garden parties of olden times. About 150 guests were served by Caterer Jenkins.

Discovering Cazenovia’s History

Stanton House Thank you to Charles Macaulay, who wrote in about 2475 Fenner Rd. with the following: “Just to set the record straight and to prevent any doubt as to one of the previous owners, I would like to point out the misspelling of “Macaully” as presented in the article. As a grandson of Andrew and Frances Macaulay (the correct spelling), I can attest to their ownership of the property until

“Fenner Road, Cazenovia, was a good place to grow up. Up to and all through World War II, Fenner Road was half paved and half gravel. Mother used to hate the dust that would get raised, especially in the dry summer time. She was so thankful when it was paved fully in the late 40s or early 50s.”

He adds, “When I was 4 or 5, just before the war, Dad built a long shed to house a double row of mink in cages. He tried radiating them with a second-hand dental x-ray machine in the hope of creating genetic modifications that might produce a new pelt color, but this didn’t work.” Mr. Stannard also adds, “Using skills from Mr. Merrill Bailey’s mechanical drawing class, I laid out and cut the aluminum letters for the “Cazenovia” sign on the barn roof.”

Since this column last appeared, two more people have written in with information about the house at 2475 Fenner Rd. Because this information continues to expand our knowledge of Cazenovia’s history, we are sharing it this week instead of introducing a new property. Andrew’s death (I believe in 1938 – but that was before I was born). Their grandchildren, myself included, still live in the area. I live in the Village of Cazenovia.” Thank you also to Carl Stannard, son of the Stannards identified in the previous column, who wrote in to share architectural details about the house as well as many personal memories, a selection of which are as follows: “The house at 2475 Fenner Rd. was originally known as the ‘Lightning Splitter,’ since the original roof consisted of an extension of the lower slopes projected upward until they met, many feet above. This made a very high, sharp peak, but it’s probably safe to say it never actually split any lightning bolts, or it would have caught fire. According to Dad, the house originally had something like 5 to 7 attics that someone had lopped off, and then connected the tops with the present upper roof slopes, leaving only one attic. In about the 50s we all had to help in popping up the four raised sections of the upper roof and adding the small dormer windows in the process of putting a new roof on. The attic was then used as John’s bedroom. He practiced his bagpipes there as well as on the porch, sometimes with me trying to sleep below him! But that wasn’t as bad as the week or so after the Cannon’s chicken farm across the road caught fire one spring during a damp and windless spell and the smell of the decaying chickens permeated the entire neighborhood.”

Indoor Track & Field girls win sectional crown Laker girls capture first Section III title By Kurt Wheeler The Cazenovia Girls Indoor Track and Field team won its first Section III title in impressive fashion on Jan.28, scoring 158 points to outpace defending champion Skaneateles (96 points) and nine other programs. The Lakers scored in every event, earned individual sectional champion titles in seven events and broke four school records en route to the victory. Senior Captain Hollie Marcelle led the Lakers to victory on the track, winning the 600-meter run in a school-record time of 1:42.11 and anchoring both the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams to first place finishes, each in personal best split times(1:02.6 and 2:30.5). Ashley Winn earned another entry in the record books as she led off the 4x400 in a

school-best time of 1:01.0 with Emmajean Speer and Jackie O’Sullivan also contributing to the win. Winn also captured the sectional title in the 55 dash (7.73) and placed second in the 300 (43.11). Jillian Vogl won the 300 in a personal best time of 42.74, took second in the 55 in 7.77 and broke the school 200-meter mark with her 27.4 second lead-off leg of the 4x200 relay. She was joined by O’Sullivan, Piper Gianforte and Audrey Bowers for third place in the relay (1:55.84). Jeanette Cudney was the fourth record-breaking Laker, improving on her own school-best time in the 3000 with an 11:14.19 second place finish. Caroline Marshall ran an amazing 5:12.23 in the 1500, just 1.5 seconds from the school record, to place second with Margaret Wolsey close behind for fourth place. Wolsey also took third in the 1000, with a personal best time of 3:22.88. Alex Dolbear, Rachel Grimm and

The 2011 Girls Indoor Track and Field team poses with the Section III championship banner inside Colgate’s Sanford Field House. The Lady Lakers won Cazenovia’s first indoor track title with a powerful and well-balanced performance, scoring 158 points to lead all Class B teams. Emma Wolsey joined Marcelle in their title-winning 4x800 relay (10:44.46). Junior track star Paige Biviano led the Lakers in the hurdles and field events, scoring three times for the Lakers. She was sectional champion in the 55 hurdles with a 9.49 clocking, placed second in the long jump (15-3) and took fourth in

the triple jump (32-6.5). Gianforte was also a sectional champion, winning the pole vault at 8-6 to lead teammates Michelle McGinnis (third, 7-0) and Emily Clipston (fifth, 6-6). Cazenovia’s trio of throwers also contributed mightily to the sectional win, scoring 18 points in total. Christy Tainter led the way (second,

Cazenovia’s exceptional depth was a key to their title win, with 29 girls competing at sectionals for the

undefeated Lakers. Their ability to contest every event and bring in fresh runners for later races has helped outpace the competition throughout the season which has also included OHSL and MVITA championships. Kurt Wheeler coaches the varsity girls track and field team.

Caz, Oneida indoor track both third at sectional meet By Phil Blackwell Championship week for Section III’s indoor track and field teams began on Jan. 16 with the boys sectional meets, held at Hamilton College. In Class B, Cazenovia had a strong showing as it finished with 70 points, just behind runner-up Clinton (74 points) as Marcellus took the top spot with 105 points. A victory came for the Lakers in the 4x200 relay, where Matt Donovan, Tom Mackowiak, Jose Wells and Dylan Muller finished in 1:39.98, more than two seconds ahead of Clinton (1:42.36) at the line. On his own, Muller earned a victory in the triple jump, going 39 feet 3 ½ inches to beat Canastota’s Chris Barnhart (38 feet 5 inches), who was second. The Lakers’ Pat Dermody had a strong meet. He was second in the 3,200-meter run in a time of 9:49.80, just behind Marcellus’ Jesse Garn (9:47.67), added a sixth in the mile and teamed with Noah Shephard, Nick Genzel and Tyler Dunkle for second place in the 4x800 relay in 9:35.46. Shephard joined John Stoker, Conner Polsin and Forest Blanchard as they finished second in the 4x400 relay in 3:55.87, not far behind Clinton (3:52.90). Mackowiak was third in the 55-meter dash in 7.10 seconds. Wells went 17 feet ½ inch in the long jump, good for third place as Donovan (16 feet 6 ž inches) was fourth. Shephard got fifth in the 600-meter run and Polsin

was fifth in the 300-meter dash. Blanchard cleared 5 feet 6 inches for fifth place in the high jump Muller got sixth place in the pole vault. Greyson Barr earned sixth place in the shot put. Meanwhile, in Class A Oneida also finished third, tying Mexico as both had 62 points and Chittenango (21 points) shared seventh place with East Syracuse-Minoa. Jamesville-Dewitt (120 points) rolled to the title. Jimmy Moyer excelled for the Indians, winning three times. He cleared 6 feet 4 inches to dominate the high jump, took the the triple jump with a best attempt of 39 feet 11 ½ inches and also conquered the long jump, going 20 feet 1 ½ inches. Dale Ortlieb was fifth in the high jump behind Moyer. Dan Margo chimed in for Oneida by winning the shot put with a top toss of 47 feet 11 inches. Connor McCarthy ran to third place in the mile in 4:49.91, where Morrisville-Eaton’s Austin Hirsch was fourth (4:52.66). Hirsch also was third in the 1,000 in 2:52.30 as McCarthy, in the 3,200, claimed fourth place. Chittenango’s Jason Given claimed second place in the 600 in 1:28.22 and also was sixth in the 600. Given, Josiah Durfee, Greg Foster and Josh Bennington took third in the 4x400 in 3:54.48. Foster, Durfee, Brad Murray and Jason Ceresoli got fifth in the 4x800 relay in 9:28.97. Chittenango’s Josh Bennington rose to fourth in the high jump.

as Connor Cannizzaro also earned three assists. Sean Cannizzaro produced a goal and two assists as Joe Nardella, Alan Baldwin and John Greacen also converted. Jeff Stowell added an assist. Davingnon also said the team’s success can be attributed to strategies that were established early in their season. “Our plan is to always play our game, he said. “Every year we’ve tried to focus on ourselves and not other people. As soon as you start altering yourself for somebody else, it gives them the upper hand. “We’re going to try to not alter ourselves as much as we can and try to always force other teams to alter themselves against us. Following this, Cazenovia returned to the road Friday for another big test, at Skaneateles, in the same Allyn Arena where it beat those other Lakers 2-0 in last year’s sectional semifinals. Aware of the danger, Cazenovia went out and simply ran over Skaneateles in yet another shutout, this one by a 7-0 margin. Up against a strong goalie in Trevor Diamond, Cazenovia used sheer volume to wear him down. In all,

pblackwell@cnylink.com Inching closer to the tasty possibility of an undefeated regular season, the Cazenovia girls basketball team put together another sensational defensive effort in last Thursday night’s 51-22 romp over Skaneateles at Buckley Gym to improve to 12-0. Still at no. 10 in the state Class B rankings, Cazenovia had little reason to fear Skaneateles – except that those other Lakers had, in the week leading up to the game, upset Jordan-Elbridge (who were without Molly Hourigan) and edged Bishop Ludden, both in close decisions. And here, Cazenovia only had an 8-7 lead going to the second quarter

– but proceeded to dominate the rest of the half, outscoring Sknaeateles 19-3. The defense continued to crack down in a 15-4 third period that sealed the outcome. Ellen Burr, by herself, matched the entire Skaneateles output with 22 points. Raeanne Clabeaux chimed in with 10 points, while Ashley Stec had seven points and Taylor Malmsheimer six points. This came after subzero weather closed school last Monday and, for the second time this season, postponed Cazenovia’s home game against Westhill. That will now take place Feb. 7, after the Lakers meet Marcellus this Thursday night. Cazenovia’s boys basketball team visited Bishop Ludden last Wednes-

day night and saw its offense vanish for long stretches of a 59-39 loss to the Gaelic Knights. All the Lakers could manage in the first quarter was three points. Even when some baskets fell in the second period, Ludden countered with a big surge that made it 36-15 before halftime. It got to 54-23 before Cazenovia could put something together in the fourth quarter against the Gaelic Knights’ reserves. Ben Romagnoli led with just eight points as the team’s top scorer, Tanner Whiteman, got held to five points. Tyler Young, with 13 points, paced Ludden’s effort. Things did not change Friday, as state no. 19-ranked Skaneateles beat Cazenovia.
