Depending on the perspective, the Cazenovia ice hockey team’s wait for a Section III ice hockey championship lasted 31 years - or 363 days. The 31 years marked the time since the Lakers’ last sectional title, shared with Christian Brothers Academy in 1980. College students receive Chief’s Awards By Pierce Smith
editor@cazenoviarepublican.com Cazenovia College seniors Mark Allen and Phillip Sheehan were each awarded the Chief ’s Award on Feb. 4 at the annual Cazenovia Fire Department banquet. The award, which is typically presented to one volunteer firefighter a year, was given to both Allen and Sheehan. Both have dedicated an extraordinary amount of time and service, to the village and their vocation. Although the two were the first recipients of the award in a single year, as well as the youngest; Allen and Sheehan are careful to share their spotlight with their fellow volunteers. “It’s not just us, it’s all the firefighters at the college, they make us look good by showing up at 3 a.m.,” Sheehan said. “All the other guys here at the department are great, too. PIERCE SMITH It’s absolutely a team effort. It takes a lot of Mark Allen, left, and Phillip Sheehan stand with their Chief’ s Awards in front of one of Cazenovia people to do this job.” Fire Department’s response vehicles. By Pierce Smith Even after the storm this past weekend, many of Cazenovia’s residents have started to anticipate the end of winter with the increasing presence of the sun, and temperature fluctuations. The vernal equinox will come on March 20 this year, and with it, the start of Spring. None can be happier than the Department of Public Works, whose members dutifully plowed the snow, and salted the streets throughout the season. As winter comes to a close in the coming weeks, the DPW will look to successfully remain within the parameters of their snow budget, a feat that did not seem likely a month ago. Unrelenting snowfall early in the season depleted funds, and threatened to cause the village more concern. So far this year, Cazenovia has seen about 150 inches of snow. While the season is not yet over, budget usage seems to have slowed considerably. The two main budget lines that funds are drawn from are for supplies and personnel. At the start of the season, the village allocated $12,500 for salt and sand; the cost drivers in snow removal supplies. After the infamous 96hour storm and three snow days for Cazenovia Central School District students, See Snow, page 3

Stewart F. Hancock Jr. sees the snowy sidewalks not as a hindrance but as an opportunity to ski his way to work on Feb. 26. $2,330.47 remains. Personnel costs were anticipated to total $86,457.60 this season. Even after long hours put in by DPW staff, $29,263.33 is still available. The month of December was the worst in recorded history, and this season is on track to surpass the statistically worst winter in Central New York. Across the nation, 49 of the 50 states had seen snow by January, only Floridans were spared. Although March has been known to feature the occasional snow fall, citizens across New York hope to see a stop in snowfall and a quick start to the great thaw.
As Spring begins on March 20, the sun will be directly above the equator. The vernal equinox consists of 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. Accordingly, the days will become longer until the summer solstice on June 21. Daylight savings, which is unrelated to the earth’s rotation, will take place on March 13. Every year at 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March, clocks are set to 3 a.m. Americans re-gain the lost hour when they “fall back” the first Sunday of November, each year.

Letters Agricultural Sciences should not suffer amidst budget cuts
To the editor: Members of the Cazenovia Community, I am writing in support of the Agriculture Science Program and FFA at Cazenovia High School. I am very disheartened that our school board is considering the termination of this program. I think most of us would agree that when cuts are made, they need to be made in areas that will least affect students and their education. Cutting a program that has shown a three-fold increase in student numbers over the past seven years seems counter-intuitive to that philosophy. The agriculture program has been growing and thriving, not waning, despite a decrease in student numbers. Many people see the agriculture science program as one that teaches the “cows, plows and sows” curriculum. That is no longer the case. Mandi Millen has updated the curriculum to meet the current needs of a 21st century agriculture economy. The courses she offers include Biotechnology, Equine Science, Veterinary Science, Animal Science, Metal Fabrication, Food Science, Agricultural Mechanics, Small Animal Care, Conservation and Natural Resources, Maple Production and Horticulture, among others. When you walk into her classroom or shop/lab you are apt to see her students working with microscopes, dissecting a sheep heart, working with dogs and other small animals, creating a new food product or otherwise participating in very science oriented, agriculture related activities. It is a thriving educational atmosphere where students are interested, engaged and learning. The FFA, a youth leadership organization that is intracurricular, is an invaluable asset. Students learn skills such as parliamentary procedure, public speaking and other leadership skills. They participate in leadership contests, career related contests and attend conferences around the state and country at which they gain invaluable experience as young adults. Agriculture students are eligible for an abundance of scholarships, as well as begin prepared for both college and the work force. They are prepared to fill an employment area that is short of employees nationwide, with hundreds of thousands of jobs left unfilled just last year. At a time when our budget is in a crisis situation, cuts to non-academic programs and non-essential activities should be first. What was not proposed, and should be, are administrative cuts. The district recently hired an assistant superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, a position that was empty for the better portion of a year. That could have and should have remained unfilled to save money. Having explored the administrative salaries of Cazenovia personnel on SeethroughNY.com, the savings by cutting positions at that level would result in fewer teacher layoffs and program reductions. As was stated by Mr. Dubik at the recent Board meeting, we are friends and neighbors; seeing anyone lose
their job is not what any of us want. But when it is necessary, we need to continue to first determine what will directly affect students and their education the least….Cutting teachers and programs that are vital is not the way to do that. I can give you a litany of information about student successes that are part of the Cazenovia Agriculture program; I can tell you about Cazenovia agriculture teacher success; I can tell you about the accomplishments of my own family as a result of agriculture education and FFA; I can tell you about all the accomplishments the students in the program have achieved at the NYS Fair, State FFA Convention, National FFA Convention, and more…But ultimately all that really matters is the understanding that the Agriculture Science Program at Cazenovia High School fills a vital need for students, for agriculture and for the community. And if it is truly students that we are concerned about, and it is truly students that we want least affected by the budget cuts that are necessary, eliminating a program that has served so many and continues to serve many more, is wrong and should not happen. Please, make show your support for the Agriculture program and FFA; write letters to or call your school board members and administration, voice your support at the next School Board meeting – before it is too late! We need the agriculture program in this community; we need to keep it and Mandi Millen so they can continue to make such a positive impact on the lives of so many of our students. JAN HELD WOODWORTH, PH.D. ADJUNCT PROF. SUNY OSWEGO FORMER HS AG TEACHER MEMBER, CAZ AGRICULTURE ADVISORY BOARD
with innovative and leading-edge education, enabling them to grow into competent leaders. If you have ever been in involved in any sort of agricultural class, career, activity, program or simply believe that agricultural education is important to the youth of Cazenovia, we (the Cazenovia FFA Chapter) are asking you to please write to the Cazenovia Board of Education to voice your support of the Caz Ag program. For many, it’s an opportunity to fit in, for others it’s the road to achieving their goals and dreams. Agriculture has been a prominent growing business through America’s recession. Ag classes prepare students for life, for college and for future careers. FFA is about teaching students’ leadership, science and agriculture. Without these programs, the future of our community, as we know it, may cease to exist. Agriculture and farming is a way of life, a culture, and a cornerstone of our economy. We need agricultural education programs like ours in Cazenovia to ensure that agribusinesses and rural life remains pure for the next generation. Please send your letters to: Mr. Fritz Koennecke, 31 Emory Ave, Cazenovia NY 13035. CARLY HAZER CAZENOVIA FFA
All welcome to ‘State of the Lake’ summit
To the editor: The Cazenovia Fireman’s Auxiliary would like to thank all of the businesses and individuals that donated raffle prizes for our annual bowling tournament. We appreciate your continued support throughout the years. Our tournament was a huge success and we couldn’t have done it without the generous donations and support. Thank you. TAMMY BARRETT PRESIDENT, CAZENOVIA FIREMAN’S AUXILIARY
To the editor: Everyone is invited to attend the Cazenovia Lake “State of the Lake” summit from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday March 12, on the second floor of the Cazenovia Village Building. The last two years of treatments have greatly diminished the presence of the invasive Eurasian Milfoil weed in the lake. Because of this success, there will be no chemical treatment for the lake in 2011. At the State of the Lake address, with the help of the Cazenovia Lake Association, we will update you on the details of treatment results and future long term treatment plans. Also on the agenda will be expert discussion of other lake health topics such as drainage, storm water retention, plant identification, and other suggestions, both at the community and individual level. Please join us on March 12 for a lively and informative discussion. STANLEY J. MAZIUK CHAIR, CAZENOVIA LAKE WATERSHED COUNCIL
FFA is important to Cazenovia students
Ice fishing derby did not flounder
Thank you, from the Caz Fireman’s Auxiliary
To the editor: The Cazenovia Central School District, as you may know, must make various budget cuts to make up for an alleged 1.6 million dollar deficit. The budget cuts are posing a very serious threat to the agricultural program; the Cazenovia FFA and agriculture classes could be eliminated. To the editor: The 20th Annual Tuscarora Lake Ice Fishing Derby was another success, in spite of many folks thinking that it wouldn’t happen since “Rosie’s” Tuscarora Lake restaurant was closed last August. A small committee consisting of Sue Henderson, Roy Hatch, Jennifer Markowski, Lori Markowski Michelle Pipas, and Diane Cass had the motto: “Just because we don’t have the restaurant doesn’t mean we can’t have a derby.” The Erieville Fire Department and Auxiliary offered to host the Derby, providing a spacious center to warm up and fuel up with tasty, hot food. 89 people registered, including nine youths. Cazenovia Public Library Museum re-launches the ‘DIG’
The DIG is back! Visitors to the Egyptian Gallery in the Cazenovia Public Library will be pleased to find that the museum’s “Digital Information Gateway has returned. This updated version, featuring touch screen technology, is designed to enhance the educational experience for visitors of all ages. When Robert James Hubbard created the original museum in the late 1800s, the fashion of the day was to display one’s collection of travel memorabilia and treasures. These exhibits, known as “Cabinets of Curiosity, contained various unlabeled conversation pieces, which provided the visitor with little or no information as to the nature and purpose of the objects. Upon Hubbard’s return from Egypt in 1894, he proudly displayed his collection in this fashion. The museum’s current format maintains this “cabinet tradition. The DIG, however, will supplement the 117year-old collection with detailed descriptions and photographs of each of the Egyptian Room’s ancient artifacts. The program, featuring photographs by Richard Walker of Cooperstown, was written by Patti Christakos and Museum Educators Pat Hill and Julia Smith Shotzberger. Also featured in the ‘DIG’, is a presentation developed by Timothy Scanlon Design,

This program combines period photos with a narration based on Hubbard’s personal travel diary. The program, narrated by Cazenovia resident Russell Grills and former Cazenovian Andrew Rogers, was written by Pat Hill and Shotzberger. This project was made possible with funds provided by the Cazenovia Public Library’s Constable Fund. Riverhill Associates of
Treadwell, provided design and computer assistance. Excerpts from each program will soon be available for viewing on the Cazenovia Public Library’s website. The re-launch of the DIG culminates several years of Egyptian gallery improvements. Additional funds were provided by the CNY Community Foundation, the Friends of the Cazenovia Public Library and the Dwight Williams fund raiser, held at the library.
Caz Presbyterian to hold Ash Wednesday service By Sharye Skinnner The First Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia, in conjunction with the Morrisville Community Church, will hold a Service of Divine Worship at 7 p.m. on Ash Wednesday, March 9. The service will include readings from the Old and New Testament, the Imposition of Ashes, a responsive Litany of penitence, and a Lord’s Prayer Litany. A mediation will be guided by Rev. Saunda Thomas, pastor of the Morrisville Community Church.
Combined choirs from Cazenovia and Morrisville will sing the anthem “Take up your cross by Larson. Catharine Wheat, the Director of Music for the Cazenovia Presbyterian Church, will lead the choirs and accompany them on the organ. A fully staffed nursery will be available for infants, toddlers and pre-school children. In western Christianity, Ash Wednesday marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are not included in the
count). Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. Ashes were used in ancient times, according to the Bible, to express mourning. Dusting oneself with ashes was the penitent’s way of expressing sorrow for sins and faults. The ashes that are used on Ash Wednesday usually come from the remains of burned palms that were blessed on the previous year’s Palm Sunday. They symbolize
death, mortality and sorrow for sin. The marking of ashes on foreheads in form of a cross also symbolizes that sins are forgiven through Jesus’ death and resurrection. If you are looking for an open and friendly place to celebrate Sunday morning worship, please join us at the Cazenovia Presbyterian Church. The sanctuary is handicap accessible. Child care and Sundayschool are available during the Sunday morning service. For more information contact the church at 655-3191 or cazpres.org.

Himes will advise teen readers on fashion Editors at Seventeen magazine called her style “chic,” and welcomed her to the group of young women chosen to be style ambassadors to their readers. Kyrstin Himes, of Watertown, a senior in Cazenovia College’s Fashion Merchandising Program, was selected as a member of the 2011 Seventeen Style Council. This is not her first foray into the world of fashion, but she sees it as, so far, the most exciting. Himes is on track to graduate in May with a bachelor of professional studies degree in management, specializing in fashion merchandising. She completed an internship during the summer of 2010 with Tommy Hilfiger, where she created an inventory system that culminated in both cost and time savings for the corporation. “I chose merchandising because there are so many opportunities for a career in the fashion world. I love my merchandising classes, and I’m looking forward to having a career that is a mixture of business and creativity,” Himes said. “The fashion world has its own unique culture and it was important for me to experience that before I enter it as a professional.” Himes has also been involved in Cazenovia College’s annual fashion show as a model, most recently on the
runway showing a senior collection for a classmate majoring in fashion design last year, as she will again this coming April 16. Joni Koegel, a visiting professor of business management at Cazenovia, notes that although she is petite and soft spoken, she has a commanding presence of a professional model on the run-way. Koegel has taught Himes in several business classes, and remarks on her “natural ability to multitask and her strong entrepreneurial spirit.” That spirit led Himes to enter a contest to become a member of Seventeen magazine’s 2011 Style Council. “I found out about the Style Council through a website called Chictopia. com, an online community that gives people a voice in fashion,” Himes said. “I went to seventeen.com to read about the contest and decided to enter. Discovering Cazenovia’s History This week’s featured house and its property, at 2043 Main St. in New Woodstock, have both seen a lot of movement over the years. The original house was built by Sumner Cleveland in 1823, and was occupied until 1875 by Mrs. Cleveland. The structure was then moved a quarter of a mile down the street and became Miller’s Meat Market, which it remained for about 50 years. In the mid-1930s the building became an automotive garage. It currently serves as a small supermarket that also sells gasoline. In the 1870s, the house that is presently at 2043 Main St. was owned by James LeRoy Savage, partner in the Morse Carriage Factory and the son of William “Deacon” Savage, himself

SWEATING IT OUT
Sweating is a by product of rigorous exercise that elicits different reactions. Some view sweating as an unsavory part of exercise while others perceive sweating as body-cleansing and weightloss mechanisms. There are also those who think that sweating is a sign of being out of shape. To set matters straight, researchers recently measured the rate at which both men and women perspired while bicycling under controlled conditions. They found that physically fit individuals start to sweat at lower core body temperatures. And because sweating is a mechanism that the body uses to cool off, sweating enables people to perform longer. Sweat output was found to be significantly higher for fit people during intense exercise than for their less-fit counterparts.
Starts Friday, March 4th
room except bath room frescoed in oil or water See History, page 15
Exercise rate and sweating do not correlate accurately, especially if you are getting back into exercise after a long period of inactivity. If you are starting aerobic exercise again after time away, then you can sweat even if you aren’t working particularly hard because it takes time for your sweating mechanisms to adapt to workout. To schedule an appointment for physical therapy, please call 315-476-3176. The State of New York requires that each patient must see a physician, nurse practitioner, dentist or podiatrist and receive a prescription for physical therapy. We are located at 207 Pine Street in Syracuse. P.S. In the study mentioned above, researchers found that, in general, men sweat more than women probably due to their higher testosterone levels, which have been linked to sweat rate.

Caz girls blast Skaneateles, get J-E in semifinals By Phil Blackwell
pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com On many different fronts, the Cazenovia girls basketball team’s quest for a second Section III Class B championship in three years took a major boost on Saturday. In its own weather-delayed Class B quarterfinal at Buckley Gym, Cazenovia, the no. 2 seed, put on a frightening display of defense to wipe out no. 10 seed Skaneateles 51-10, the third time it has beaten that other group of Lakers this winter. As this was going on, top seed and defending South Jefferson got taken out, 56-50, by no. 8 seed Westhill, which gave long-time Warriors head coach Sue Ludwig her 400th career win. More importantly, that game opened up the Class B bracket on top, as Westhill will play no. 5 seed Utica-Notre Dame in the semifinals while Cazenovia (18-1) has a chance to avenge its only loss of the season to no. 3 seed Jordan-Elbridge in the other semifinal. The winners meet this Sunday at Utica Memorial Auditorium for the sectional title.

only made the playoffs because weather kept those Lakers from meeting Westhill in the Feb. 19 regular-season finale, when a loss would have kept Skaneateles out of the sectional tournament. Given a reprieve, Skaneateles ousted no. 7 seed General Brown 39-36, but from the moment the game tipped off at Cazenovia, it was clear which Laker side would keep on playing. Skaneateles did not even get on the board in the first quarter as Cazenovia reeled off 18 unanswered points. And it didn’t get much better for the visitors as Cazenovia’s ferocious defense never backed off, even during a 15-2 dash through the third period. Raeanne Clabeaux, with 16 points, and Ellen Burr, with 15 points, both outscored Skaneateles by themselves as Taylor Malmsheimer added eight points and Colleen Dougherty six points. Ashley Stec managed just four points. Stec, in particular, savored another shot at the J-E team that held her to two points in that Feb. 17 defeat.
Indoor track girls advance to states Four school records fall in qualifier meet By Kurt Wheeler The Section III Class B champion Cazenovia Girls Indoor Track and Field team posted a series of record breaking performances during the Feb. 26 State Qualifier Meet. Two of the squad’s athletes will advance to the New York State Championship. Se-
nior Piper Gianforte will represent Section III in the pole vault, and junior Jillian Vogl will compete in the 300-meter dash. Both athletes finished number one overall among all competitor in Central New York in their events. A host of other Lakers capped their seasons with peak performances. Jillian Vogl led the way for Cazenovia on the track, living up to her top seeding in the 300-meter dash with a first place finish (42.91 seconds) among all competitors in Section III
to earn a trip to the State Championship Meet at Cornell on March 5. She narrowly missed a bid in a second event as she finished third in the 55 meter dash in her best time ever (7.69 seconds). The indoor track competition is fierce, with only two athletes total from schools of all classes in the section advancing. Vogl also ran the fastest 200 meter split in school history (27.2 seconds) as she led off the Lakers’ fifth place 4x200 relay. Piper Gianforte, Audrey Bowers and Jackie

O’Sullivan also contributed to the relay. Hollie Marcelle was also spectacular on the track, setting a new indoor 800 meter record for Cazenovia (2:26.8) as she led off the fastest indoor 4x800 relay in school history. Margaret Wolsey (2:35.2), Caroline Marshall (2:34.6) and Jeannette Cudney (2:37.4) all contributed the Lakers’ record-setting time of 10:12.17. Cazenovia finished third behind speedy F-M and CNS teams. Marcelle also earned a fifth place finish in the 600 meter run but fell short of her school-record pace set last month at the sectional championship. Missing two runners from their powerful 4x400 relay, the Lakers were unable to contest that event which was captured by New Hartford in 4:23.62, well off Cazenovia’s secSee Track, page 17

Hollie Marcelle capped off her illustrious indoor track career with two more entries in the school record books. The senior captain broke the all-time indoor 800 meter mark and led off the fastest 4x800 relay in Cazenovia indoor track history in addition to a fifth place showing in the 600 meter run.

Yogi Bear‌Family fun-close to you! Jellystone Park marks 41st year
asked us to take Yogi to a holiday event in Rochester on Dec. 2. It was a tree lighting and a variety of family activities. We spent about two and a half hours meeting and greeting families. Yogi kept the children busy while waiting to have their picture taken with Santa. Yogi and Boo Boo traveled to Carousel Mall for the opening night of the new movie. They were on a red carpet as they greeted movie-goers. Later they were asked to ride the carousel with the children. It was difficult to move through the food court both Friday night and Saturday because so many children and adults wanted their picture with the bears. Saturday, when someone on the carousel spotted Yogi work his way for aother ride, a loud “Yogi Chant was started that certainly got some attention. They also rode the glass elevator and the escalator. What a great experience for all of us, said Barb Lighthall. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park is located at 601 County Route 16, Mexico. For more information call 963-7096 or visit jellystonecny.com. Propane is available year-round; call ahead. “Every time we’ve wanted to take a class or get some training in, they provided transportation, the gear, the equipment, whatever we needed, Allen said. “They really put a lot of faith and trust in us, I think this is a reflection of what we were able to do with their support. Allen and Sheehan were randomly paired as roommates during their freshman year at Cazenovia. Allen, a native of Saratoga Springs, and Sheehan, an Eagle Scout from Troy, quickly realized they both majored in criminal justice, and had interest in the local fire department. Together they filled out the required applications and were voted into the department by established members. For the past three years, both men have been volunteering time at the
members and emergency medical technicians. Over their careers at Cazenovia College, Allen and Sheehan were integral with the creation of the Cazenovia College Firefighter and EMS Club, as well as the recruitment of an additional 10 members. This is quite an accomplishment for the school and fire department, as previous campus organizations had yielded less than a hand-full of volunteers. The club promotes participation and understanding of the life-saving activity. Allen and Sheehan had coordinated a number of trips to surrounding departments and lectures from area professionals. In addition, the club joins the Cazenovia Fire Department at Burton Street Elementary the second week of every October for “Fire Prevention

said junior forward Brian Gara. “But we haven’t accomplished our goal (yet). Efforts similar to the one on Saturday would give Cazenovia a great chance at that primary goal. Though the Lakers had beaten Clinton by 4-1 and 4-0 margins in their two regular-season meetings, it did not tread lightly in the third encounter with the Warriors and, as usual, wasted little time seizing control. Using its speed and aggressiveness to swarm the net, Cazenovia struck when, 5:35 into the first period, Joe Nardella capped off a power play with a wrist shot from the right point that eluded Clinton goalie Cory Harris. Less than two minutes later, it was 2-0 as John Greacen, also using a wrist shot, found the net. Having out-shot the Warriors 13-3 in the first period, the Lakers kept adding to the margin. Just 1:37 into the second period, Lucas Catania converted to make it 3-0, and at the midway point of the period Gara chimed in as, while surrounded by Clinton defenders in front of Harris, he still used a one-handed shove to slide the puck home. Greacen returned for his second goal at the 10:31 mark, just as the game turned physical and Clinton, in frustration, started committing a rash of penalties. Davignon said his team simply relied on skill and athleticism to wear the Warriors down. “We’ve got great team speed and kids
who can do some stuff with the puck, he said. That includes Gara, who returned to notch his second goal early in the third period to close out the scoring. Connor Cannizzaro managed a pair of assists as Gara, Catania, Sam Lewis and Jeff Stowell managed one assist apiece. Gara was named Division II Co-Player of the Year with Sean Cannizzaro, who combined with fellow defender Nardella (a first-team All-League selection, along with Lewis) to wipe out any vestige of a Clinton attack, holding them to 16 shots, all of which Mason Powell stopped. “Our defense revolves around our offense, said Davignon, adding that the amount of time Cazenovia’s back line spends advancing the puck up the ice protects the back side, and leads to more chances. Cazenovia had 41 shots in all. To reach the title game, Cazenovia first had to make sure it was the best Laker team around – which it did by demolishing Skaneateles 8-1 in last Tuesday’s Division II semifinals at the Morrisville State IcePlex. These same two sides had meet in this same round a year ago at Allyn Arena, Cazenovia prevailing. This regular season included two more wins over Skaneateles, by a 4-1 margin on Dec. 21 and a 7-0 margin on Jan. 28. Now Skaneateles arrived at the IcePlex See Hockey, page 17

fresh off a 3-1 opening-round victory over CBA/J-D on Feb. 18, determined to reverse the recent course of the Laker rivalry. But it didn’t take long for Cazenovia to assert itself once more. Despite having not played in 12 days, Cazenovia showed no rust, attacking hard from the opening face-off. The relentless push led to constant scoring opportunities as it beat Skaneateles goalie Trevor Diamond four straight times to build a huge early lead. Though Skaneateles did settle down in the second period and got on the board with Jacob Cooney’s goal, it could not get closer. Ahead 5-1 going into the final period, Cazenovia sealed matters by scoring three more times. In all, Cazenovia took 57 shots as six

different players managed multiple points. Lewis and Sean Cannizzaro each led the way with four points as Lewis got two goals and two assists and Cannizzaro picked up one goal and three assists. Close behind them, Gara managed a goal and two assists as Nardella earned three assists. Greacen and Connor Cannizzaro both poured in two goals, while Catania, Stowell and Adam Baldwin managed one assist apiece. Cazenovia goes up north to face the Section X champions this Saturday in the Division II regional finals, with the winner coming back to Utica for the March 12-13 state “Frozen Four. “This (winning a sectional title) was one step, said Davignon. “Our goal is a state title.

tional pace of 4:20.20. Piper Gianforte also earned a trip to states with a first place, 9-0 effort in the pole vault. Top-ranked in the event all season, she soared over the bar at nine feet and made three strong attempts at the school-record height of 9-6, a mark she’ll be shooting for again this weekend at Cornell. Paige Biviano was also in record breaking form for Cazenovia, topping her own school mark in the long jump on three different jumps, including a 16-8 effort. Despite her superb performance, she fell 3.5 inches short of a bid to states with jumpers from CNS and Phoenix hitting 17-2 and 17-1.5 respectively. The multi-talented Biviano also competed in the triple jump and 55 hurdles for Cazenovia at the elite meet, two events where she already holds the all-time school marks. Senior Laura Fitch rounded out the field event line-up for the Lakers, competing in the high jump to conclude her four year indoor track career. The girls NYSPHSAA Championships begins at 1:15 on March 5 in Cornell’s Barton Hall. The Lady Lakers trip to states rounds out the best indoor season ever for Cazenovia which included an undefeated record along with league and sectional titles.

HEALTH & WELLNESS Hematology-Oncology Associates provides the highest level of quality care Since 1982, Hematology-Oncology Associates of CNY (HOA) has been a private practice dedicated to providing optimal care in a healing environment for the mind, body and spirit of patients dealing with cancer and blood disorders. HOA is comprised of 16 physicians, 22 nurse practitioners/physician assistants and 200-plus clinical personnel in four locations including one in Rome and three in the greater Syracuse area. They are privileged to have patients entrust them with their medical care and allow them to be an integral part of their healthcare journey. HOA treats about 2,500 new cancer patients and 1,300 new patients with blood disorders each year. HOA’s Clinical Research Department and Clinical Trials are one of our community’s jewels. HOA is one of just 50 National Cancer Institute Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP) participants in the U.S. There are times when HOA’s patients can benefit from clinical trials using new cancer treatments or technologies that are unavailable anywhere else in Upstate NY. Everyone at HOA is deeply committed to offering their patients the most advanced treatments available. Their clinical staff is highly skilled and certified in their Oncology specialty. HOA’s comprehensive cancer sites offer infusion therapy and radiation therapy via two advanced Varian linear accelerators for IGRT (Image Guided Radiation Therapy). Their East
HOA is deeply committed to offering their patients the most advanced treatments available. Syracuse facility also houses the CyberKnife, the world’s most accurate radiosurgery weapon, which painlessly treats tumors with minimal effects on nearby healthy cells. The CyberKnife tackles tumors throughout the body including the spine, brain, lung and prostate – even those deemed inoperable. Because it’s so effective, patients need far fewer treatments. HOA also offers in-house CT imaging, giving their treatment teams quick, desktop access to each patient’s cumulative imaging, so physicians can closely monitor progress. In addition,
their certified laboratory offers extensive on-site testing for exceptional results and patient convenience. What makes their practice truly special is that everyone at HOA is “united in spirit” – a spirit that is filled with possibilities and hope. They believe that effective medical treatment is not only about healing their patients’ physical illnesses, but also about promoting their emotional, mental and spiritual well being. Their patients are treated like people – not cases. They offer counseling and alternative therapies such as Reiki, massage, healing touch, acupuncture and foot reflexology to complement their state-of-the-art medical treatments and clinical trials. The mission of Hematology-Oncology Associates of CNY is to provide the highest level of quality care in a healing environment for the mind, body and spirit of patients dealing with cancer and blood disorders. HOA’s sites include Brittonfield Parkway in East Syracuse – 472-7504; Onondaga Hill in Syracuse – 472-7504; North Medical Center in Liverpool – 472-7504, and East Chestnut Street in Rome – 339-5783. Their beautiful, healing space called “The Wellness Center” is located at 5700 West Genesee Street in Camillus and provides a haven of opportunity for the mind, body and spirit and it is open to the public. Visit their website at hoacny.com.
Popular alternative to nursing home care thrives in CNY
Who would have dreamt that one of Central New York’s most popular alternatives to traditional nursing home care today originated nearly 30 years ago on the west coast of the United States? PACE CNY, Loretto’s popular Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly in cooperation with St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center, is based on the national PACE model created in 1973 to help the AsianAmerican community in San Francisco care for its elders in their own homes. It provided an innovative way to offer and coordinate a comprehensive array of medical services, physical and occupational therapies, nutrition, transportation,
respite care, socialization and other needed services using home care and an adult day setting. In 1994, Loretto determined that it would pursue development of a PACE program in Onondaga County. PACE CNY officially opened its doors on December 1, 1997, and has since expanded to include two full PACE Day Centers serving a current census of more than 400 enrollees. According to the National PACE Association, the typical PACE participant is over the age of 80, lives alone or with relatives, and requires help with personal care and with activities of daily living to maintain safety and security. The Interdisciplinary Team
Approach One of the unique aspects of PACE CNY is its interdisciplinary team approach to providing or coordinating care of those people who are nursing home eligible and are age 55 or older. Every weekday morning the team gathers for “Morning Meeting,” where they discuss any findings or concerns about each individual participant’s health and well being. Every participant has a team that manages their needs. The PACE CNY interdisciplinary team includes medical care from primary care physicians and nurse practitioners, and home care services from registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and certi-
fied home health aids. In addition, PACE CNY offers physical, occupational and massage therapies, as well as therapeutic recreation, day care, nutrition, medication management, transportation and case management staff services. Recent developments at PACE CNY In 2008, Loretto’s Forest View at Fayette opened to provide quality, low-cost housing for 14 older adults in Syracuse. PACE CNY provides supportive services for these residents to help them remain independent and living in the community for as long as possible. Excellus BCBS awards hospitals $19 million for quality improvements Fifty-two upstate New York hospitals last year earned more than $19 million in quality improvement incentive payments from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield as part of the health insurer’s Hospital Performance Incentive Program. In the past two years, quality performance incentives from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield have exceeded $40 million. “By tying our payments to these hospitals to improvements in health outcomes and patient safety, we’re helping assure that our members and all others get the best quality care and the most value for their health care dollars,” said Carrie Frank, vice president of quality and health informatics at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. Eight hospitals in Central New York participated in this program in 2010, including Community General Hospital, Cortland Regional Medical Center, Crouse Hospital, Massena Memorial Hospital, Oswego Hospital, Samaritan Medical Center, St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center and SUNY Upstate University Hospital. “Working with Excellus BlueCross BlueShield complements our robust quality improvement program at Upstate University Hospital,” said James Legault, director of clinical practice analysis and infection control at SUNY
Upstate University Hospital. “The ability to combine our goals with Excellus BlueCross BlueShield works well for both organizations.” Launched in 2004, the HPIP program evaluates participating hospitals on more than 300 performance measures. Target outcomes are jointly agreed upon by each hospital and the health insurer using benchmarks established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the Leapfrog Group, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and others. Four areas are targeted for improvement: Clinical Outcomes – Focused on improvements in heart attack care, heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. Patient Safety – Focused on reductions in hospital-acquired infections, improved medication reconciliation processes and National Quality Forum Safe Practices. Patient Perception of Care and Patient Satisfaction – Focused on a hospital’s use of a national survey tool. Efficiency – Focused on generics utilization, length of stay and readmissions. “Having a financial incentive to improve quality has resulted in participating hospitals consistently scoring higher
on CMS Quality Measures than hospitals whose payments are not at-risk,” said Frank. CMS is the federal agency that administers Medicare, Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Relevance in upstate New York In 2007, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield issued a fact sheet on hospital-acquired infections which showed an estimated 19,500 upstate New Yorkers acquired an infection during a hospital stay in 2004 and nearly a thousand deaths were likely to have occurred as a result. The fact sheet, titled HospitalAcquired Infections in Upstate New York, is archived under the heading “Hospitals” in the News & Information section of excellusbcbs.com. Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, a nonprofit independent licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association, is part of a family of companies that finances and delivers vital health care services to 1.7 million people across upstate New York. Excellus BlueCross BlueShield provides access to high-quality, affordable health coverage, including valuable health-related resources that our members use every day, such as cost-saving prescription drug discounts and wellness tracking tools in our Step Up program. The residents of Springside can enjoy many fun and informative community programs brought right to their door on a regular basis. Whether it’s taking part in a creative writing program taught by a SUNY Oswego professor, or an osteoporosis exercise program, the nearly 70 residents have many programs available right where they live. The residents also enjoy many theme dinner parties throughout the year. Some of their favorites are the upcoming Mardi Gras, and the traditional St. Patrick’s Day Party where they’ll enjoy entertainment and the traditional fare for the event. In turn, community organizations utilize Springside’s facilities when holding functions. Springside hosts between 40 and 50 events each year, for organizations including local service clubs, church-related groups, retiree groups, and SUNY-Oswego programs. The facility is also often the location for many Oswego Health functions such as board meetings and social gatherings. Then there are the ever popular Soup Lovers luncheons held October through April the second Wednesday of the month. These luncheons, which are open to the public, attract as many as 200 individuals each month. In addition to the Soup Lovers events, there is a strawberry Festival held in mid-June and summertime hotdog luncheon events. “These events keep our residents connected with the community,â€? said Vice President/COO Teresa Ferlito. “Their interest is always piqued as to what organization is using their beautiful facility to host a meeting or dining event.â€? Springside residents enjoy the delicious meals prepared for them by the in-house chef. They have input into the menus and are encouraged to share their favorite recipes with the kitchen staff. Other interesting programs are held for the residents. Selected presenters talk about a favorite topic to the residents, which would be either health-related or on a hobby. The presenters are typically local individuals. “These workshops encourage our residents to use their talents and helps them maintain their social lives,â€? Ferlito said. Springside at Seneca Hill is a premier retirement community located midway between Oswego and Fulton. For further information contact 343-5658, or visit the website at oswegohealth.org. CANCER BEWARE “I had cancer. Cancer never had me.â€? Yesterday, I got out my fishing rod. I couldn’t help thinking of everyone at HOA. It was last spring when I found out. I was overwhelmed, distraught – and scared. I thought my fishing days were over. Then I went to HOA. My medical team all said, “We have the technology to fight this thing!â€? and showed me the CyberKnife. It sounded scary, but when I learned how it worked and how safe it was, I had hope for the first time. Your attitude really inspired me, your staff always encouraged me and your plan of action worked. I may have had cancer, but cancer never had me. Today, my kids and I are heading up to the lake.
