Mahoney’s State of the County address covers consolidation, green initiatives and long-term spending reform By Ami Olson editor@theeaglecny.com In delivering her 2011 State of the County address Tuesday March 1, Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney proclaimed, “we are coming out of this recession stronger than we went in.” Mahoney cited a list of consolidation efforts among county, city, village and town governments, including a shared municipal purchasing department that 23 municipalities are interested in joining. From the stage at West Genesee High School in Camillus, Mahoney commended the West Genesee Central School District employees for their cooperation in voluntarily accepting a pay freeze to avoid teacher layoffs.

Tentative budget holds the line in Fayetteville By John Zych Despite concerns about the economy and an uncertain fiscal future, the village of Fayetteville’s tentative spending plan does not raise property taxes. Mayor Mark Olson released the $5.1 million budget draft at the board of trustees meeting Feb. 28. The proposed tax rate will stay at $6.70 per $1,000 assessed value. The amount to be raised by taxes is $1.8 million, the same as this year. The trustees will now get to fine-tune the budget in workshops, and then will schedule an April public hearing before its adoption. This budget would mark seven consecutive years under Olson’s administration that village residents will not see an increased tax rate, even

though Onondaga County cut nearly $400,000 in sales tax revenue to Fayetteville. Last year, the village received nearly $900,000 in county sales tax revenue and could have been left getting nothing this year. But after a much-publicized lengthy and contentious debate, the County Legislature agreed to establish a Village Improvement Program that will provide $252,000 in addition to the allocated $240,000 sales tax revenue. Olson said the village dipped into its fund balance, or savings account, for $200,000 to add to $195,000 in rollover funds to cut into the deficit. Also, total assessment revenues have increased more than $6 million over the curSee Budget, page 5

DeWitt FD urges residents call 911 in emergencies By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com When the DeWitt Fire District moved into its new fire station on East Genesee Street in June 2008, it discontinued use of its emergency seven-digit telephone number. Residents, however, are still calling in with situations that only the 911 Call Center is equipped to handle. “There isn’t always someone here to answer the phone,” said Fire Chief Jason Green. “And what’s worse, even if someone does answer the phone, they aren’t best trained to take the call if [for example] someone was choking. Whereas if they call 911, [the employees are] trained and they have specific questions that they’re going to ask.” The DeWitt Fire District no longer has a dispatcher on-site for two reasons: the service would be redundant since Onondaga County already provides the 911 central call site, and residences increasingly

continue to install private fire alarms. Additionally, as the fire district experiences a rise in call volume and requests for service, it can not dedicate in-house personnel anymore to receive these phone calls. “It has become customary for many [people] to telephone the fire station for all types of situations, including, at times, serious emergencies,” said Green in a letter addressed to the public on the district’s website, dewittfire.org. “Many people believe that their situation isn’t serious enough to call 911 and often waste valuable time searching for alternate phone numbers.” Green said residents should call 911 regardless of how serious the circumstance is because the call center’s personnel are best trained to prioritize calls. Dispatchers also provide crucial pre-arrival instructions for emergencies, which can save lives and time. “These services are not provided by personnel at the fire station,” Green said.

DeWitt historian to speak at Rotary event

Natives of a small community in the Bajo Lempa region of El Salvador are facing an impending famine. Ninety families, or more than 700 people, will be affected. A local group of teens who recently visited the people refuse to let them starve. They have less than two weeks to raise $27,000. About 46 students from area high schools, including Fayetteville-Manlius, Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy, returned home last month from a seven-day stay in El Salvador as part of an annual mission to help this poverty-stricken community. Since 2006, more than 150 kids and adults from Syracuse have traveled to the Bajo Lempa region under the leadership of Young Life Syracuse East, an international organization that works with teenagers, and Holy Cross Church in DeWitt. Their mission is to fulfill the families’ basic needs and create a better future. Projects they’ve completed include providing clean water to families, constructing more than 30 chicken coops and establishing two medical clinics. This year their main projects included building a chapel and painting the school they built last year. “Since we’ve been going to [Bajo Lempa] for five years, our relationships we have with [the locals] are really strong, said Holy Cross Church Youth Minister Andrea Jacobs. “That’s what we try to teach the teenagers, too. It’s not [all] about the work, it’s about the relationships we have with them. This year, the group learned of an impending famine that would hit their friends in early May. A flood last year destroyed the crops on which they rely for food and income. They’ve been living on their reserves and using the little money they have left to buy food to feed their families. By May, the food and money will run out. That’s why the money being raised here, and the timing, is critical. The cost of seed and fertilizer for each of the families in Rancho Grande and Taura is roughly $300 per family,

All proceeds from the sale will go toward the food fund. “At this point, we know that if they don’t have food, they don’t have food, Jacobs said. “There’s nowhere else for them to get it. Used dresses can be dropped off in the office at Holy Cross Church or in the downstairs closet near Yeazel Hall. Checks in any amount are also welcome and should be made out to Holy Cross Church and sent to Holy Cross Church, El Salvador Food, 4112 E. Genesee St., DeWitt, NY 13214.

Are you a history buff? On Monday March 14, DeWitt Town Historian Ellie Johnson will pique your interest with stories about the early railroad and the Erie Canal, both of which made an historical impact on the town. Johnson will be the featured guest speaker at an event sponsored by the Rotary Club of DeWitt. “The Erie Canal made the growth of the town of DeWitt possible, she said. “For the first time you could get goods out of here for [about] two cents per mile, which was a giveaway compared to what it was before. The town shipped out products such as alcohol and cheese, which Johnson said the king of France fancied so much, it was the only cheese

he repeatedly requested. Other stories about local events in DeWitt and throughout Central New York will be told, along with sundry photos obtained through the Onondaga Historical Society. Johnson, a retired teacher from the Jamesville-DeWitt School District, earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester and her master’s degree from Syracuse University. The public is welcome to attend the Rotary Club event which begins at 5:30 p.m. with cocktails (cash bar) and dinner at Traditions at The Links – Erie Village, in Fayetteville. EAGLE BULLETIN, MARCH 9, 2011

NEWSPAPERS

Opinion Editorial

Eat well, age well

March is celebrated as National Nutrition Month by the American Dietetic Association to promote nutrition education and proper nutrition is more important than ever as we age. While good nutrition may not turn back the hands of time, it can certainly help you prevent, treat and recover from illness and improve your quality of life in later years. As we age, we may need fewer calories. However, we still need the same nutrients. Some tips include: x Consume calcium and vitamin D-rich foods. These nutrients help maintain bone health and reduce the risk of fractures. With age, we are less efficient in absorbing calcium from foods and often don’t consume enough foods that contain calcium and vitamin D. Low fat dairy foods as well as fortified juices, cereals, and breads are good choices. x Stay hydrated! As we age, our thirst mechanism can decrease. Many older adults tend to limit fluid consumption to prevent frequent trips to the restroom. Try keeping a water bottle with you throughout the day to sip on. x Fill up on fiber. Fiber can prevent constipation, control hunger and weight and help decrease your risk for heart disease. Fruits and vegetables are always an excellent choice. Whole grain breads, cereals, rice and pasta also provide fiber. x Choose lean protein. Maintaining muscle mass is important as we age. Fish, skinless chicken and turkey, nuts and beans are excellent sources of protein. If you feel you may not be getting sufficient amounts of some nutrients, talk to your doctor about a vitamin/mineral supplement. It’s never too late to develop a lifestyle that includes healthy eating. Old habits can be difficult to break, so don’t try and change everything at once. Start with small, gradual changes. From the mailbag UCF thanks those who ‘keep the music playing’

To the editor: The United Church of Fayetteville was grateful to be able to provide a setting to “Keep the Music Playing as part of our historic commitment to the value of music and arts to the spiritual life of all people. Generous area musicians (Loren Barrigar, John Cadley, Paul Fey, Joanne Perry, Jeffery Pepper Rodgers, John Price, Kevin Roe and Cathy Wenthen) donated their talent to what became a festival-like evening of great music, camaraderie and enjoyment for an audience of nearly 250 on Feb. 26. Our “Keep the Music Playing benefit for the Syracuse Symphony was presented through the auspices of our ongoing musical offering, Steeple Coffeehouse. Many of these musicians, as well as others, play at the coffeehouse throughout the year. The musicians, audience, generous support of local small businesses (Encore Shop, The Art Store, R Clark Goodwin, Johnny Appleseed Farm, Falso, Schepp Funeral Homes, John Callahan, Thomas Flanagan and Vincent Smith, Kellish Hill Music Farm, Mackenzie Hughes, Firm Insurance Company, James G. Monaco, Dosa Grill, Fair World Marketplace, musicians who also donated a portion of their CD sales to the SSO) and UCF church members – especially Cindy Burke, Gloria Manuel, Janet Press and John Price, who provided the organization, communication, donations to a silent auction and thousands of food treats for attendees – and the much appreciated participation of the news and communication media are, in combination, responsible for the success of this endeavor. Together, these many efforts, organized in just three weeks, contributed to our congregation’s “flash benefit, which raised more than $5,000 for the SSO to “Keep the Music Playing. UCF has been part of the Fayetteville-Manlius community and connected to the wider Syracuse Community for 200 years and looks forward to a long future of involvement in a full range of social issues (justice, spiritual care, education, reconciliation, hunger and the arts) that promotes healthy bodies and spirits, leading to a whole

‘Every vote counts’

To the editor: Today, I am writing to encourage everyone to look beyond political parties and affiliations when voting on March 15. This is not about Republicans, Democrats, Conservatives or Liberals. This is about village patriotism. Everyday, I make decisions as the mayor of Manlius that impact the quality of our village and the lives of our residents. I can assure you these decisions are not based on any one particular party platform or another. For me, it is always about placing the village first and finding common ground while seeking consensus. Shared services, shared purchases, inter-municipal agreements and activation of mutual resources aren’t just ‘campaign catch phrases.’ When implemented, they can strengthen the fabric of our local governments and provide much needed tax relief. Please vote on March 15 at our Manlius Village Centre. We face serious challenges and we need serious-minded people focused on advancing our village. At nearly 200 years old, the village of Manlius certainly didn’t get here without facing the challenges it surmounted head on. Today is no different... And remember, every vote counts! MARK-PAUL SERAFIN VILLAGE OF MANLIUS MAYOR

F-M district grateful to voters

To the editor: I would like to thank the Fayetteville-Manlius School District residents who took the time to vote March 1 on the district’s $10.5 million capital project proposal. I am so grateful that an overwhelming number of voters saw the need for these projects and authorized the board of education to move forward with the proposal. The projects included in the plan will improve health and safety issues at four of our schools, the bus garage and the transportation office building.

rent year. This will help close the gap. While neighboring municipalities are struggling to make ends meet for the fiscal year that begins June 1, Olson said Fayetteville residents will not experience a tax rate hike because the village has held the line on spending. “This is a sound budget, the mayor told the board. “It is not a fat budget by any means. Earlier this year Olson directed the board to abide by strict guidelines to cut spending, manage departments and plan for more reductions without eliminating services. As a result, in the proposed bud-

get, Fayetteville’s total spending is down 5 percent after spending was reduced 6 percent in the current year from the prior year. The mayor said there are no major projects on the horizon while others, such as the Safe Routes to School program, the Canal Landing Park and the Fire Department building construction are completed. “We are going to catch our breath, Olson said. A bigger challenge lies ahead during the 2012-13 budget process. ‘We have to start thinking about next

year, Olson told the board. “We must find ways to replace lost revenues. Another hurdle for the village is that its state-mandated retirement fund payment increased more than 60 percent in the last two years, and Fayetteville must also contend with rising health care expenses. The mayor stressed budget planning is a never-ending process. “We are watching every penny, Olson said.

We are pleased to be able to say that we will complete this work with no impact to residents’ tax bills. State building aid will pay for 81.2 percent of the project, and the remainder will come from the district’s capital reserve fund. Thank you for making this investment in our facilities that will benefit future generations of students for years to come. Sincerely, DR. CORLISS KAISER SUPERINTENDENT, FAYETTEVILLE-MANLIUS SCHOOL DISTRICT

F-M school nurses recognize community leaders’ compassion

To the editor: In the spirit of community service, the town of Manlius Police Department, Police Benevolent Association, Target and Cor Development teamed up to provide shopping excursions for some Fayetteville-Manlius and East Syracuse Minoa children. Their mission was to purchase gifts for family members. Organized by Manlius police officer Angela Palmer, each child paired with a police volunteer early one Saturday morning in December. The children received $100 gift cards to use anywhere in Target. The officers were wonderful support and guides for the group, assisting with selections and gift wrapping. Realty USA in Manlius generously provided some F-M families with gifts and groceries during the holiday season. The employees purchased appliances, clothing, toys and more to help these families celebrate. The F-M school nurses wish to thank our generous and compassionate community leaders. The East Syracuse Minoa School Central School District, in collaboration with the teacher and administrator bargaining units, announces contractual concessions with district employees that will save approximately $638,000 for the next school year, helping to preserve jobs and bridge a projected budget gap. The concessions will help district leaders address sizable budget challenges due in large part to reduced state aid revenues and the sun-setting of federal stimulus funds. On March 4, ESM United Teachers, the district’s largest bargaining unit, overwhelmingly approved a contract restructuring that reduces the contractual wage increase for next year. A stipulated 3.75 percent increase in base compensation for the 2011-12 school year was reduced to 1.5 percent. “We want to continue our collaborative relationship and continue to help, said John Nichols, ESM United Teachers Union President. “That is always the way we have worked together at ESM. The administrator’s bargaining unit voted Feb. 18 to give up a scheduled 2.5 percent raise for next year, and ESM’s superintendent as well as the other executive cabinet members

of central office administrators have frozen their salaries at current levels. “We, as administrators, voted unanimously to forgo our 2.5 percent salary increase for next year to do whatever we could to help save jobs during these challenging fiscal times, said Bill McEachron, ESM administrator’s bargaining unit president. “These concessions save the district money at a time when we need it most, and that’s critically important, said Board of Education President Debbie Kolod. “We appreciate the understanding of our teachers and administrators, and look forward to continued cooperation and collaboration as we make difficult decisions in the coming months. The collective savings represented by these groups will provide a boost to the district in its efforts to preserve meaningful programs and services for students. “Bridging the gap this year means we all have to pitch in, said Superintendent Dr. Donna DeSiato. “This is by no means a complete solution to the budget challenges, but we are grateful for establishing a good first step, and look forward to a solution that preserves the integrity of our educational program in a cost-efficient manner for ESM taxpayers. Marcia Kelley is the school information officer for the East Syracuse Minoa School District.

Fayetteville-Manlius School District residents approved Tuesday, March 1, a $10.5 million capital project proposal that includes work at four school buildings, the Transportation Office Building and the district bus garage. The proposal passed in a 1,542 to 755 vote. Construction is not expected to begin on any of the projects until June 2012 and is anticipated to be complete by September 2013. The next steps in the process include an architect design period and State Education Department review of the project plans. The projects will require no new tax dollars. State building aid will pay for 81.2 percent of the costs, and the remainder will come from the district’s capital reserve fund. “We are so grateful that our residents have authorized the district to move forward with these projects. This work will ensure that our students and staff are learning and working in safe and healthy environments, said Superintendent Corliss Kaiser. “Obtaining voter authorization at this point in time was critical as we just don’t know what the future holds in terms of available state aid for building projects. We likely will not see these levels of state support again for a long time, if ever. In response to the state’s fiscal crisis, Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed reducing the amount of funding school districts statewide would receive for capital projects.

If the Legislature approves that proposal, F-M has pledged that rather than raise taxes, it would reduce the capital project proposal’s scope of work based upon the amount of available state aid. “We recognize that many of our residents are struggling in these tough economic times, said F-M Board of Education President John Cucinotta. “Although these projects are critical to maintain our facilities, we have promised that this referendum would not create an additional tax burden for our residents. We are fortunate to be in a position where, if state building aid stays at its current level, we will be able to complete the full scale of work with no new tax dollars. Included in the F-M proposal is the $3.1 million demolition and reconstruction of the bus garage. A key feature of the new building, which will be built at its existing site behind Wellwood Middle School, is that it will include hydraulic lifts. Mechanics currently work underneath district vehicles in a maintenance pit that is collapsing. F-M is the only school district in the county that does not use hydraulic lifts in its bus garage. A community task force researched the costs of renovating the nearly 60-year-old garage and determined it would cost about $300,000 more to construct a new facility. The group recommended building a new facility rather than continuing to “band aid the existing failing structure.

Sarah House helps out-of-town guests in crisis

Life can change in a heartbeat. Jennifer Comen can attest to that as director of Sarah House, the only adult hospital hospitality house in Central New York. She first volunteered for the organization, driving guests to and from area hospitals. “I am amazed every day at what the people [who have stayed] at this house have endured,” Comen said. “All of them have touched my heart.” Sarah House, named after Abraham’s wife in the Book of Genesis for her kindness, patience and hospitality, serves families of patients seeking medical care in the Syracuse hospitals. It provides lodging, transportation, meals and comfort to veterans, senior citizens, low-income families and guests whose extended stay away from home may create a financial hardship. Comen recalled the family of a 70-year-old woman from Auburn. Her children traveled to CNY from all corners of the country for a family reunion. While the mother and her son were running errands, they were broad-sided by another car while sitting at a red light. The mother suffered spinal injuries and was put on life support for more than two months before she died. Last August, Sarah House hosted the families of four young men in their 20s; all separate accidents that occurred in the North Country. One of the men went home within two weeks, another was left paralyzed by his injuries; one never regained consciousness and died two weeks after his accident, and the last family lost their son after he spent two months in a coma. “It is stunning how quickly life changes,” Comen said. “These are the families that need for us to be there for them – everyday people facing unexpected situations.

You go home and hug your family and remember to try not to sweat the small stuff. You just never know.” Mary Keough founded Sarah House in 1993; her nephew Billy was the driving force behind her inspiration. When he had to undergo a bone marrow transplant, his family stayed in a hospitality home in New Hampshire. Keough identified the need for a similar type of service in Syracuse. Sarah House started in a four-bedroom colonial home on Roberts Avenue in the Strathmore area. It now extends to the neighboring convent and has 11 bedrooms (two are wheelchair accessible). It operates at more than 90 percent capacity most of the time, holding up to 18 guests. Currently, the not-for-profit has five people waiting for an available room. Individuals typically hear of Sarah House through social workers, care coordinators and hospital websites. It costs $15 per per person per night, but the rate will increase $5 in April, Comen said. No one, however, is ever turned away for inability to pay. “Every penny we raise goes in to the daily operations of our house,” Comen said. Amenities include two kitchens, two common rooms, a library and laundry facilities. “The rooms are very cozy, on the small side,” Comen said. “Some [guests] have described [them] as ‘comfy, like staying overnight at grandmas.’ We do our best to make guests feel like this is their ‘home away from home.” Its goals include expansion as Comen pointed out the national trend shows the demand for hospital hospitality houses is on the rise. “Our high occupancy rate is a testimony to that,” she said. Sarah House will be holding its second annual fundraiser, Down Home Hospitality, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday March 15 in the Empire Room at the New York State Fairgrounds. Tickets cost $50 per person. The night will feature bluegrass music by John Cadley and the Lost Boys, food, a cash bar and live and silent auctions. Dress is casual and jeans are welcome. Cobras tamed in semifinal loss to Skaneateles By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com

Bishop Grimes’ boys basketball team was determined to see its talented senior class exit the stage with a Section III Class B championship. The fact that the Cobras did not could mostly be traced to how one opponent – Skaneateles - kept turning them back, with more emphasis each time. It all climaxed last Tuesday night at Onondaga Community College when the no. 5 seed Cobras fell to the top-seeded Lakers 69-39, a game defined mostly by the way Skaneateles defended Mike Stone in what proved to be Stone’s last high school game. Remarkably, Stone did not make a single field goal, all of his four points coming at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. It was a stark contrast to the 22 points per game Stone had

averaged during the winter. Blame – or credit – could largely fall to Skaneateles senior guard Mike Richards. Having held Stone to 16 points when the Lakers beat Grimes 73-42 in the Feb. 18 regular-season finale, Richards was back on Stone’s case in this playoff encounter. Skaneateles also remembered how the Cobras had beaten them in double overtime on this same OCC court in this same semifinal round a year ago, and were bent on not letting that happen again. Grimes faced full-court pressure right from the start. At first, the Cobras handled it, shuttling the ball inside to Mike Sugamosto, who notched 16 first-half points. Gradually, though, the pressure took a toll, especially on Stone. Everywhere he went, Richards followed, and any time he got the ball someone else joined in for a double-team, whether it was Kevin Rice, Brandon Barron or Jimmy Atkinson. Stone just took just two shots in the first half, missing them both.

Meanwhile, the Lakers didn’t suffer when its star center, Pat Roberts, went to the bench with two fouls early in the second quarter. Instead, it closed the half on a 16-5 run, capped by Paul O’Donnell hitting a banked-in 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to make it 39-23. It didn’t help, either, that Connor Sohl went out for a time with a leg injury With Stone smothered and fellow guard Casey Evans getting even less room to operate, Grimes never could put together any kind of run in the second half to chip into the Lakers’ margin, and instead watched it spin out of control. Rice and Roberts led Skaneateles with 18 points apiece as O’Donnell added 11 points. So the Cobras’ season ended with a 14-7 mark as Stone, Sugamosto, Sohl, Mike Timpano and Will Commisso depart. Evans leads a solid returning class that includes Gai Ater, Steve Lembo and Jon Carnegie, but a lot of offense will need to be replaced.

CBA boys beaten by Proctor in AA semis One more good quarter of play, and the Christian Brothers Academy boys basketball team would get a chance at the Section III Class AA championship. Instead of a strong finish, though, the no. 4 seed Brothers slumped at the worst possible time, allowing top seed Utica Proctor to prevail 49-40 in last Tuesday night’s AA semifinal at Whitesboro High School. So for the second season in a row, CBA saw its title hopes end in the semifinal round, having fallen to Cicero-North Syracuse in this round in 2010. Given its own preference for man-to-man defense, the

Brothers were not fazed one bit when Proctor trotted out its own man-to-man look in the game’s early stages. CBA instituted a motion offense, which met with success. Either it used back-door cuts for open looks under the basket, or it utilized screens to get open 3-pointers, which CBA hit to build a quick seven-point lead on the Raiders. Unfazed by this, Proctor closed within a basket, 24-22, by halftime, then changed things up, going to a 2-3 zone defense for the second half. Suddenly CBA saw its open inside looks disappear as Wendell Wright contained Greg Thomson. Worse yet, the outside shots stopped falling, especially in the fourth quarter, where it made only two field goals. With the game tied 34-34 going to the final frame, the

Raiders forced six turnovers and turned to its brother tandem of Walkery and Maurice Mills, who hit on a series of late baskets that made the difference. Walkery managed 16 points, while Maurice mixed in 13 points and six rebounds. Three players accounted for most of CBA’s production. Shakir Evans led with 14 points, while Rob Cuomo gained 10 points and Thomson, despite his game-long struggles, managed six points. The Brothers finished with a 15-4 mark, and sees a large senior class, including Thomson, Evans, Cuomo, Andy Drescher, Brian Anderson, Dave Hornstein and Tyler Hamblin depart, giving head coach Buddy Wleklinski a major challenge to maintain CBA’s long tradition of producing title contenders.

did it carry a vast advantage in post-season experience over Proctor, its confidence had gained a major boost when it had upset no. 2 seed Corcoran 56-50 in the Feb. 24 quarterfinals – the same Cougars it had lost to at home the week before. The no. 7 seed Hornets, trying again to avenge a regular-season defeat, could not quite pull it off, but gave no. 3 seed Utica Proctor a battle before falling to the Raiders 55-39 at Whitesboro High School. were doomed by its slow start, only managing five points in the first quarter as Proctor’s star senior guard, Brianna Kiesel, kept forcing turnovers and converting them into baskets on the other end. For the rest of the night, F-M chased the Raiders, improving on the offensive side to keep the game interesting, but unable to make any sustained run. Only Ali Pliszka, with 14 points, reached double figures as Lauren Getman added nine points and Kiley Shoemaker got eight points. Kiesel, who is going to the University of Pittsburgh next fall, stood out again as she poured in 24 points, adding 10 steals and four assists. Sarina Olds added nine points and nine rebounds as Cara Mootz hit a trio of 3-pointers to account for all of her nine points. At least F-M stayed within sight of Proctor – something CBA, despite all of its best efforts, never See Ousted, page 11

Staring at an undefeated opponent and a top seed, the Jamesville-DeWitt girls basketball team stared right back for a long time in last Wednesday night’s Section III Class A semifinal against Whitesboro at Chittenango High School. Only in the final stages did the 19-0 Warriors get away, ultimately beating the no. 4 seed Red Rams 62-51 – and while the defeat ended J-D’s season and extended a title drought that dates back to 1998, that wait might soon end. Going into this season, expectations for head coach Rob Siechen’s Rams were modest, since it had to replace all five starters from a 15-5 squad that had reached last year’s sectional semifinals before falling to eventual champion Cortland. Despite that complete turnover, J-D nearly snagged the OHSL Freedom National division regular-season title, denied only in the final minute of the final game by CBA on Feb. 18. A week later, the Rams dismissed

East Syracuse-Minoa 47-31 in the Class A quarterfinals. And now J-D was back in the semifinal round, expected to be overwhelmed by a bigger, stronger and more experienced side from Whitesboro. Only the rout never materialized. No one on the Rams could match that production. Still, Kayleigh Cavanaugh had 12 points, with Cydney Goodrum (11 points) and Caitlin Cariseo (10 points) also hitting double figures. Stephanie Mannion had seven points and Lauren Beville added six points. The best part about J-D’s 12-8 campaign was that it earned most of the wins from January onward, and did so with a starting five entirely composed of underclassmen. Only two reserves, Kara Capstraw and Monica Piccolo, depart, and the return of Cavanaugh, Beville, Cariseo, Goodrum, Mannion, Katie Maroney, Abby Smith and Arriell Mussi bodes well for a championship push in 2011-12.

got close to doing against an opponent as formidable as CNS. Applying all kinds of pressure and a quick tempo, the Northstars were up 23-4 by the end of the first quarter, and the margin kept growing, in large part because CNS took full advantage of all the attention the Brothers lavished on Connecticut-bound junior Breanna Stewart. Stewart had 18 points, below her season average, but Brittany Paul made four 3-pointers on her way to 15 points and Abbey Timpano set a season mark with 14 points as Kelsey Mattice (10 points) also made solid contributions. By contrast, the Brothers had no player reach double figures. Marisa Romeo led with nine points, with Kelsey Johnson (seven points) and Ellen Voorheis (six points) close behind. Finishing with a 15-5 mark, CBA only sees two seniors, Voorheis and Alexa Darwish, depart, and the large returning cast, including Romeo, Johnson, Michelle Wiese and Olivia Pitonzo, should lead to more success next winter. Meanwhile, F-M, who finished at 15-6, returns every key player except Jillian Schwab. The core of Pliszka, Shoemaker, Getman, Bri Dolan, Alexis Rios and Charlotte Beers should make the Hornets quite formidable.

Garrett Farchione, Cole Speidel, Ryan Byrnes and Eric Jorgensen worked their way to 19th place in 3:17.33. Josh Lacey also represented the Red Rams in the 500 freestyle, taking 38th place in 4:55.66 as Jorgensen was 31st in the 50 freestyle in 22.46 seconds.

So the Jamesville-DeWitt boys basketball team may have taken a slightly different course than in the three previous years it claimed a Section III Class A championship. That hardly mattered, for it led the Red Rams to the same familiar spot - on top, without any questions. J-D, the no. 2 seed, got sweet payback against top seed Cortland in Saturday’s Class A final at Utica Memorial Auditorium, beating the Purple Tigers 75-55 as DaJuan Coleman exploded for 22 of his 26 points in the second half and his running mates, Tyler Cavanaugh and Demetrius Mitchell, would also play starring roles.

Of course, Mitchell was still recovering from the broken foot he suffered in mid-December when, on Jan. 28, Cortland beat J-D 55-51, a game where the Purple Tigers dictated the tempo, hit 10 3-pointers and, among other things, kept the frontcourt tandem of Coleman and Cavanaugh from ever getting comfortable. Much the same thing was unfolding in the sequel, to J-D’s chagrin. Though the Rams ran out to an 18-9 lead early in the second quarter, it was again allowing Cortland to slow the game down when it had the ball, content to eat up large portions of the 35second shot clock as long as J-D wasn’t running. With an 11-2 push late in the half, Cortland tied it, 2020, and they traded baskets before Cavanaugh’s 3-pointer pushed the Rams in front 2522 at the break. Despite the lead, J-D coach Bob McKenney said he was unhappy because Coleman had just four points and was rarely getting the ball even when he was out there. So he told his players to find Coleman and get him more involved. Coleman sensed he had to play a larger role, too. “I knew I had to step it up and be the leader of this team, he said. Less than 30 seconds into the third quarter, Coleman got the ball and dunked it home, all while getting fouled. He completed the three-point play to make it 28-22, and the Rams’ attack started flowing again. Still, Cortland would not go away, only trailing 44-40 when, as the third-quarter clock ran out, Cavanaugh sank a huge 3-pointer from the corner that banked off the See J-D, page 19

composed for their combination of instruments. Members of the quartet are violinist Mahlon Darlington, violist Jonathan Sturm, cellist George Work and pianist William David. The Ames Piano Quartet is the resident chamber ensemble at Iowa State University. Since its formation in 1976, the ensemble has toured throughout the United States and internationally, including concerts in France, Austria and the Far East. They were the first chamber music group in over forty years to perform in Cuba. Mozart’s publisher is the one to thank for the first piece on the program, his Piano Quartet in G minor, K.

II (Capital District), who won with 5,748. On her own, Boccardo opened with her best game of 210, then followed with games of 188, 191, 164, 153 and 182 for a six-game total of 1,088. Williams was the individual medalist with a total of 1,230, two pins ahead of Lansingburgh’s Becca Pratt.

J-D From page 12 glass before going in. It proved the catalyst for a 13-0 run that all but sealed the outcome. Cavanaugh, who finished with 16 points and was named Class A tournament MVP, said his poor performance in that first Cortland game served as a prime motivator here - though he added that it helped immensely to have Mitchell (who had 15 points in the final) back to occupy the Purple Tigers’ attention. McKenney agreed. “Tyler played a bad game (back in January), he said. “He was eager for an opportunity to show what kind of player he is. Of course, it was Coleman that put on the big show in the final period. He had two more big dunks, but the imposing 6-10 junior also stepped back and hit a pair of 3-pointers, all part of a 13-point effort in that last frame that wiped out Cortland’s chances. Much as in the title game, J-D did take a while to fully assert itself in last Wednesday’s Class A semifinal against no. 4 seed Whitesboro at Chittenango High School, but did put together an emphatic closing kick to beat the Warriors 81-45.

The Rams were not sharp at any point in the first quarter on the offensive side, but got away with it because the defense applied constant pressure and held Whitesboro to seven points. As the pace quickened, so did J-D as its margin grew to 31-20 by halftime. Through a wild third quarter, the Warriors had plenty of production, but still could not keep the Rams from going further ahead, and finally broke down as J-D closed with a 26-6 spurt. Coleman backed up his 18 points (which put him past the 1,300 mark for his career) with 12 rebounds. Cavanaugh also had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds as Mitchell also got 12 points and Pete Drescher contributed 11 points. Brandon Franklin came off the bench to produce eight points as Ryan Watson led Whitesboro with 12 points. Another sectional title would soon follow, and J-D could turn its attention to a quest for a fourth consecutive state Class A title. It must win two regional games this weekend at CiceroNorth Syracuse in order to return to Glens Falls for the state final four.
