Bottoming out ‘50s era homes may pose risk to residents By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com More than 2,000 homes built in the 1950s exist in DeWitt, according to a report issued by the town’s assessment department. That figure includes the village of East Syracuse and the hamlet of Jamesville. Last week, the DeWitt Fire Department answered a call at 102 Clearview Road, a ranch-style house built in that same decade, after homeowner Martin Hafter’s garage floor had collapsed. The garage was built over a hole using sup-

port beams, which rotted over time and gave out Jan. 16. Hafter’s is one of three 1950s homes where this has occurred over the past two winters, according to fire officials who have said this type of construction is typical for that era. Is there a way to find out if the same incident could happen at your home? According to DeWitt Fire Chief Jason Green, that depends on access to structural components, however, “just being aware of having that type of construction will be the first step towards people having it inspected and recognizing a potential problem.” See Codes, page 8

By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com High school Spanish students have a chance to travel to the oldest city in Europe: Cadiz, Spain. Susana Delmar, a teacher in the Fayetteville-Manlius School District, has arranged for six consecutive years a summer study abroad program that lasts almost an entire month. The program is independent from F-M, but students can earn college credits through the University

of Cadiz, where they benefit from 45 hours of study. “At this point, I have taken close to 100 students [altogether],” said Delmar, noting she has just five spots left for this year’s trip. “That may change very quickly, though.” Students who would like to go should act now. Delmar said after this summer, she is changing the program from yearly to every other year. Her main reasons include spending more time with her family See Spain, page 8

Community News Urgent care at its best Immediate Medical Care of CNY celebrates three years in Manlius By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com If you’re in need of urgent medical attention, your best bet to get it is right around the corner. Immediate Medical Care of CNY, located on Cazenovia Road in Manlius, is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and 1 to 7 p.m. Sundays. The private operation is unique in that it’s staffed by medical doctors only – patients get to see a physician every time. Founder Dr. Thomas Chmelicek, who has more than 11 years experience working both in ER and in family practice settings, said he still believes that doctor-patient relationships provide the best level of care. Trained in Chmelicek in his own country of origin, Canada, Chmelicek then worked for seven years as part of a multinational group in Mississippi that owned numerous urgent cares. His Manlius practice, which opened three years ago on Jan. 15, is a model of that group. “If you have skilled physicians, you get [seen] quicker and [receive] faster treatment,” he said. “That’s been the model since day one.” Chmelicek, pronounced Ha-meli-

He said most visits are sick children, cases of bronchitis and flus, but the 3,000 square-foot space is also equipped with an on-site lab for blood work and x-ray services. As described on the center’s website, imccny.com, “We can treat any age group, from pediatrics to geriatrics, from eye care to surgical care, from women’s health to family health … We provide the crucial initial care.” If follow-up care is needed, your doctor will either coordinate with your regular physician or give a referral if you don’t already have one. When patients arrive, they sign in at the front desk and take a seat in a spacious, inviting lobby. Chmelicek said his philosophy is old school; his staff is personable and treats everyone

with respect. “You’re already sick, [you] don’t need grumpy attitudes,” he said. “[We] keep it clean, nice, [it] doesn’t take much effort [and] represents a nice feel to people. Those little things are very important,” but have fallen by the wayside over the years, he said. Immediate Medical Care averages between 650 to 700 patients a month and has the capacity to serve many more. It’s location is convenient in that it’s next door to a Rite-Aid pharmacy. “In this business, it takes two to three years to get there, to get the word out,” said Chmelicek, who also serves as a doctor for the FayettevilleManlius School District. “Most of my patients are word of mouth.” Immediate Medical Care of CNY accepts most insurance, except Medicaid. Food politics

Is buying organic worth the extra expense? Organic food is good, but do the benefits outweigh the costs? If you want to begin eating healthy, then pay attention to the labels on food products instead. According to “The Science Teacher,” a magazine catered to teachers and professors, in order to be considered organic, the food must be free of genetically modified ingredients, sewage sludge, irradiation and synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. The animal must be raised without antibiotics and hormones, given organic feed and must have been provided access to an outdoor area. These regulations sound positive, but the rules are

market on Westcott Street. She said the amount of food Americans consume makes it hard for an organic society to exist. Our society is too fast paced and we demand very low food prices, she said. Additionally, the food wouldn’t be presentable in the way that our country demands: organic foods and products not genetically modified come out looking misshaped and don’t have the vibrant colors that other produce does. “[In order to go organic] you have to have a lot of money and a lot of labor. Labor in the United States is not a high commodity. I think it’s good to eat as healthy as you can, but if you ate the way you wanted to, the produce wouldn’t be presentable,” Brownson said. If you decide to go organic, expect to pay up to 30 percent more than conventional food. “I would look at nutritional value, but [with]produce, whether it’s organic or inorganic, the nutritional value will be the same,” Brownson said.

loose. One misleading policy is the amount of pesticides allowed in organic food. According to “The Science Teacher,” organic food tends to have at least one third as many pesticides as conventional food. The amount of pasture time given to animals can be for very short periods and still be considered organic. Also, in order to be considered organic, companies must pay a high price for the USDA organic label, which some small companies can’t afford. Consequently, their organic products are sold without the USDA required label. Thus, there are products found at the grocery store with qualifications to be organic, but if companies can’t afford the label, they will be mixed in with other conventional products. This is why reading a label is critical; it differentiates the types of foods you may end up purchasing. Debbie Brownson sells her produce at a local farmers

Opinion Editorial

Get out and get fit During the chilly winter months, it’s natural for our bodies to tell us to stay indoors and load up on calories to keep warm and cozy. While comforting, this instinct can pack on the pounds and potentially lead to health problems. The alternative to “hibernating” is to get out there, enjoy the weather and burn some calories. Did you know a 150-pound person burns an average 285 calories per hour building a snowman, 319 calories per hour participating in a snowball fight and 340 calories per hour shoveling? Other winter activities to consider include: • Building a snow fort or igloo; • Playing chase, tag or hide and seek; • Having a scavenger hunt for winter nature items such as animal tracks, pinecones or bird nests; and • Shoveling a path in the yard like a maze. Don’t forget traditional outdoor winter activities either such as ice-skating, hiking in the snow, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Highland Forest, located on Highland Park Road in Fabius, is a great place to participate in a variety of these traditional outdoor activities. Just remember, before heading outdoors for your winter workout, dress warmly and in layers, stay hydrated and be aware of the weather forecast. Semper Fidelis means always faithful I witnessed the civilian death of a marine, and let me tell you, jar heads are just as impressive off the battlefield. He was the father of a trio of brothers I was friends with in high school before I came to Skaneateles. His sons were “all male” even as teenagers. They practiced judo, rode horses, raced motorcycles and chased women like crazy. Not sure if I got the order right? Those three sons headed to Alaska after first seeing this great country of ours. Two are now commercial fisherman on Kodiak Island, where they fish for salmon, black cod, halibut and occasionally tanner (snow) crabs. Along with their six packs, those two have eight packs, which is a license that allows one to drive a very big boat. Their dad, Ted, was a solid mass of a quiet man. He was more like a boulder than a rock. He ultimately lived the old fashion American dream, meaning he had a house and a job and was married to his wife for 54 years after returning from the Korean conflict. Ted was a marine in the first tank division, and ultimately one of the Chosin Few. Skaneateles’ Joseph R. Owen, 1st Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps, was riding with that division when he was wounded at the Chosin Reservoir. He authored the book “Colder than Hell” about that experience, which is often used as a text in our military schools. Owen once told me that men like Ted are still held in high esteem by the marines who face battle today.

Ted’s wife was a nurse and in the end she was his nurse. He died of esophageal cancer. It took about a year; a year of weight loss, family visits, pain management, feeding tubes and flashbacks. The flashbacks started in an emergency room. He was cold, so his wife took his coat and laid it on top of him. She said in that moment he went back to Korea, when he was in those frozen mountains trying to keep warm and trying even harder to keep the wounded warm with extra jackets. The Chosin was an engagement in North Korea where the temperatures were bitter cold. He said it wasn’t the dead that bothered him, but the wounded. It was their suffering that haunted him. I witnessed Ted having a flashback and all the Hollywood machinations and my own imagination hadn’t prepared me for the experience. As he sat at his table (the toughest guy I ever met) he was in the mountains of North Korea and he was freezing. Tears rolled down his cheeks and he spoke in an altered state. His wife said as she looked back over their years, he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) their whole life together. But that it just wasn’t something recognized by the military until recent times and still is hard to sort out and treat. PTSD was formerly referred to as shell shocked. The care often fell to the wife, who probably hadn’t had much training to cope. Ted maintained his dignity to the end. His wife made damn sure of it.

To the editor: The family of Maureen Shanahan would like to say a huge thank you to the entire community for the tremendous support, kindness and generosity as we coped with her illness. The Dec. 12 benefit was wonderful because of the dozens of volunteers; the merchants and individuals that donated raffle gifts, food items, paper goods and takeout supplies; our local churches; village of Manlius personnel; local newspapers; Maureen’s co-workers and so many caring friends and neighbors that made the event possible. We will be forever grateful for all the messages of sympathy and love at her passing Dec. 13. With heartfelt appreciation, Dick, Jesse and Jenna Shanahan Manlius

Beacon Federal Bancorp continues to grow By Maria Carbonaro Ross Prossner, president and CEO of Beacon Federal Bancorp, has been with the company through three name changes and as many changes in the services it offers. Prossner has led the financial institution for 34 years. He holds a degree in finance and business administration from Syracuse University. After graduation, he worked for Lincoln Bank for five years, where he was a manager trainee and then became its commercial lending officer. “Then the opportunity to take over the manager’s job at Carrier Credit Union presented itself, and I was ready to move on … I’ve been with this organization ever since,” Prossner said. When Prossner took over as manager of Carrier Federal Credit Union in 1976, it was a $4 million-asset credit union. In 1978, United Technologies took over Carrier Corp. Shortly thereafter, Carrier Federal Credit Union became Beacon Federal Credit Union. “Around 1982, we changed our name and became a more generic credit union. We adopted the Beacon name so we could start offering our services to other employee groups,” Prossner explained. “… as the credit union moved along, we continued to grow, up until 1999. We then decided that to continue to grow … the way to best grow the organization would be to switch the charter from a credit union to a mutual-savings association,” recalls Prossner. “In 1999, we asked our members if we could make that change and they agreed with us. We gave up being tax-exempt, but we also gained the ability to do commercial loans and other kinds of mortgage loans for our members and our customers that we couldn’t do as a credit union and continue to grow,” he says. Prossner describes a credit union as a mutually organized institution. It is a tax-exempt cooperative institution. Beacon stayed in the mutual form, but became a tax-paying mutual by becoming a mutual savings bank. When Beacon Federal Credit Union became Beacon Mutual Savings Bank, it stopped being a credit union and became a bank. However, it was still owned by its depositors. At that time (1999), Beacon had about $150 million to $170 million in assets, according to Prossner. “We had good fortune,” Prossner said. “We merged some credit unions, went around the country and joined with the

other Carrier Credit Unions, and merged with other small credit unions here in Central New York. We kept adding to the base and we grew nicely … to the point that we were about a $170 million entity — so we flipped and became a mutual savings bank.” From 1999 to 2007, Beacon Mutual Savings Bank grew from $170 million in assets to $750 million in assets. In 2007, because it had grown so quickly, its capital levels were reduced to the point where if it wanted to continue to grow, it had to have an IPO (initial public offering). “Now it’s 2007, and we were a mutual savings bank. The group devised a list of ideas administrators will review to potentially add to the current 2009-14 District Action Plan. The district updates the plan annually. “This is an important exercise so we can develop a focus on those things where we can improve,â€? said Superintendent Corliss Kaiser. The large group broke up into smaller groups of four to six people each and talked about the following issues. • Differentiated instruction • Increasing pro-social behavior • Foreign language • Measuring post-high school success • Sustainability • District communication Using large sheets of paper and markers, each group recorded their thoughts and then displayed them at the front of the room. This was the second year administrators and board members gathered to discuss the district’s current goals and any new issues facing the district. The current 2009-14 District Action Plan approved in July 2010 can be found at fmschools.org under the Board of Education section.

‘The Soul Within’ wins battle of bands Teen bands from across Central New York recently converged at the Jewish Community Center’s Schayes Family Gymnasium for the Ninth annual Battle of the Bands. The crowd of 200 included teens of all ages, brothers, sisters and proud parents, showing up to support their favorite bands and enjoy a night of great music and performances. This year’s panel of judges included Ron Keck, owner of SubCat Recording Studios, Liam DiCosimo, lead singer of the band Honor Bright and a partner in AUX Records along with 93Q’s Brandon C. The judges were instructed to rate on the categories of stage pres-

ence, musical skill, audience response and overall performance. Many of the bands that performed really shined and they impressed the judges with their incredible level of musical talent. Although the competition was stiff, The Soul Within, which consisted of band members Michael Teixeira, Zach Snyder, Dylan McIntosh, Rob Glasser and Alex Deal from Liverpool High School, took the first place prize. The band brought down the house with two original songs, a cover of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman and Guns and Roses’ “Sweet Child of See Soul Within, page 8

About 60 percent to 65 percent of its business is in New York State, and the rest is outside. Beacon Federal Bancorp built a new facility on Manlius Center Road a little more than a year ago. Its original headquarters was on Court Street Road, but it outgrew the 10,000square-foot facility. The bank had become spread out over several properties that it was leasing, and with the continued growth, explains Prossner, Beacon decided to get everyone back together in one facility. Beacon leases the property, which was built by Michael

Santaro. “We wanted to have a new branch over here on the east side, so it started with the idea of putting a branch over on Manlius Center Road, and putting our headquarters there, and then we decided to include our lending facilities and our accounting facilities, and then last into the group was data processing. So now we have a new headquarters right here,” Prossner said.

It involves a three-day stay in Madrid, where the group of no more than 20 kids first arrives. They then ride a bus to Cadiz, settle in with their host families (two students per family) and begin two weeks of classes at the university. The last seven days are filled with cultural activities, including a trip to Sevilla, Spain. Delmar described the qualifications, benefits and cost in more detail below. About Cadiz

Spanish students from any local school are welcome to apply. Then I select them based on [their] teacher and sometimes personal recommendations. I want serious, mature students who will be responsible and will follow the rules.

What are the benefits of studying abroad?

The benefits are endless. Among the most important in the short-term are that students improve their Spanish skills, they learn about the culture because they get to be immersed in it, and they have a lot of fun. In the long-term, it is an unforgettable

Cadiz is located in the southwestern coast of Spain. Built in a peninsula-island, the city is surrounded by the sea on three sides and is only accessible by the Puerta de Tierra (land door), built in 1755. Its population is approximately 160,000. for this program?

What can the students expect from the experience?

What kind of feedback have you received from past students?

They can expect to have an incredible experience in a very safe environment. They can expect to have fun as they experience firsthand what they have heard and learned in school from their Spanish teachers.

What is the approximate cost to go and when is the deadline to sign on

There is no deadline, but I take students on a first come, first serve basis, so when I have my number, I close the registration. The total cost is $3,800, which includes air fare, room and board with the families, tuition at the university, the hotels in Madrid and Sevilla, cultural activities and excursions. In other words, everything. The only additional cost is the meals on the travel days from JFK to Madrid and back (at the airport).

Both parents and students have given me absolutely wonderful comments and feedback. I keep a file with letters that I have received over the last six years. Some of the students that went with me the first year are now soon to be college graduates, including two future Spanish teachers.

J-D dominates Class A boys indoor sectional meet By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@cnylink.com

No one could keep up with the Jamesville-DeWitt boys indoor track and field team as it found points everywhere and breezed to the Section III Class A championship Sunday at Hamilton College. By the time it was done, the Red Rams had earned 120 points, well clear of a field where New Hartford, with 69 points, won a close contest for second place. Further back, East Syracuse-Minoa tied for seventh with 21 points. Austin Davis went to the top twice. First, he won the 3,200-meter run 10:07.36 as Will Hohreiter (10:27.48) claimed third place and Jack Healy finished fifth. In the 1,000-meter run, Davis prevailed in 2:44.81, where ESM’s Joe Coogan was fourth. Davis added a sixth in the mile.

Ira Griffin claimed the 55-meter dash in 6.82 seconds as Michael Meyer (7.01 seconds) landed in third, then went to the 300-meter dash and took that race in 37.02 seconds. Tom Wilson was fourth in the 600meter run. Dan Driscoll claimed second in the mile in 4:37.77, where ESM’s Mike Coogan dominated the race, winning in 4:25.11. Will Sterriker was second (8.80 seconds) and Nate Sturgeon fourth in the 55-meter hurdles. Driscoll, Wilson, Hohreiter and Healy earned second place in the 4x800 relay (9:00.03) as J-D also was fourth in the 4x400 relay and fifth in the 4x200. In field events, Ryan Peters got second place in the shot put with a toss of 44 feet 10 inches as Koy Adams took fourth place. Sterriker had a third-place triple jump of 37 feet 11 inches, while Meyer was fifth. Griffin and Sterriker were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the long jump as Jaquan Tearney snagged sixth place in the high jump.

Meanwhile, in the sectional Class AA championship meet, Fayetteville-Manlius tied West Genesee for fifth place, each of them finishing with 47 points as Liverpool went to the top spot with 91 points. The Hornets nearly won the 4x200 relay as Ryan Jones, Austin Perez, Langston Lightcap and Andrew Veilleux finished in a time of 1:36.87 - just behind Liverpool, who won in 1:36.72. Andrew Roache claimed second place in the 3,200 in 9:38.94, just behind Baldwinsville’s Shaun Thompson (9:38.06) as Roache’s teammate, Nick Ryan, was third in 9:39.97. Mark McGurrin earned the runner-up spot in the mile in 4:29.34. Roache teamed with Perez, Lightcap and Veilleux for third place in the 4x400 in 3:44.01. And in the 4x800, Roache, McGurrin, Eric Billingson and Ben Thomas were third in 8:44.71. Eric Billingson was fifth the 1,000 and Jones got fifth in the 55 sprint as Veilleux took sixth in the 600.
