Auto buff gets green light Town approves zone change for classic car storage facility By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com The Manlius Town Board has voted to grant Robert Alluzo a zoning variance to build a 4,000-square-foot storage garage on an .84-acre lot he owns at Old Fremont Road and North Central Avenue in the town of Manlius. The change from “Restricted Agriculture and R-3 Residential” to “Industrial” was passed with a 4-2 vote with councilors Vince Giordano and David Marnell voting against the measure. The proposed garage will be used to house antique and collectible cars. Most of the neighboring properties are zoned industrial; parcels across the street on Old Fremont Road are zoned residential. J-D BOE holds budget meeting By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com The Jamesville-DeWitt Board of Education held a public budget meeing Monday March 14 in the high school large group room. The meeing was a follow up to last week’s regular meeting, of which approximately 175 people attended. “The board was extremely proud of the passion with which everyone spoke about what they felt important at J-D,” said J-D Board of Education President Virginia
Murphy referring to the March 7 meeting. “They were all wonderful advocates for people and programs that we hold dear. The board values everything that was said by the community and will take it all into consideration.” The district is proposing to cut approximately 20 teacher jobs, about half from attrition. Parents, students and staff that night spoke primarily about retaining an elementary library position and a social worker position. See Budget, page 7
By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@ eaglebulletin.com A young, unassuming first-time published writer, Toby Ball, walked into the Manlius Dunkin Donuts to meet with me just an hour before he was set to talk to a group of aspiring writers at the Manlius Library Toby Ball on March 6. We sat down at the only empty two-top table, next to a window facing Elmbrook Drive. He grabbed a cup of coffee; I sipped on white hot chocolate. My first question posed to the 1985 Fayetteville-Manlius graduate: When did you decide to become a writer? He said he became serious about the craft in 1997, after his family moved from the country’s capital to New Hampshire. His son had just turned 6, and Ball was in the process of earning a master’s degree in education. “We didn’t know very many people [in N.H.] so I spent my evenings, while I wasn’t doing homework, writing,” Ball said.
