Guest speaker Rebecca Dadey will discuss American Sign Language in today’s world during a special program to be held Monday Feb. 22 at the DeWitt Community Library. Dadey, who has been deaf since childhood, is an assistant professor of ASL and Deafhood at Onondaga Community College. The event will begin at 7 p.m. “There’s a lovely aesthetic to signing,” said DCL Executive Director Wendy Scott. “It is an art form as well as a form of communication that everyone can appreciate.” Many people are surprised to learn that sign language is often learned by those in the hearing world, too. For example, babies can be taught sign language before they have the ability to talk as a means to communicate basic needs. According to smalltalklearning.com, there is evidence that school age children who sign show improved reading scores. Additionally, some high schools and colleges in the United States accept ASL in fulfillment of modern or foreign language skill requirements. “Millions world-wide have been helped by learning American Sign Language,” said Dadey, presenter of numerous workshops on deafhood, bilingual-bicultural deaf education and various topics in ASL for deaf community members and interpreters in CNY and beyond. In addition to Dadey’s consulting busi-

ness, Eye on Language (eyeonlanguage.org), she is heavily involved in the deaf community through communication with various agencies and organizations, including serving as President of WHOLE ME, Inc., a non-profit organization Dadey providing programs for deaf and hard of hearing children. Dadey also taught English and ASL to deaf students for six years at OCM BOCES in Syracuse. “ASL made it possible for me to compete and succeed in everyday life and the professional world,” she said. Brentano String Quartet to perform Feb. 19 The Brentano String Quartet will return to Syracuse for its third performance with the Syracuse Friends of Chamber Music at 8 p.m. Saturday Feb. 19 at Lincoln Middle School. A frequent guest at major North American concert series and festivals, the Brentano Quartet also has considerable international experience, having performed at London’s Wigmore Hall (where they were the resident quartet during 200/01), the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and in major cities in Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia and Japan. The ensemble began winning top awards, including the Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the first Cleveland Quartet Award, shortly after it was founded in 1992. Since 1999 they have been Princeton’s

first and only resident string quartet. Members of the quartet are Mark Steinberg and Serena Canin, violins; Misha Amory, viola; and Nina Lee, cello. The concert will open with one of the six quartets by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart known as his “Haydn quartets.” Mozart had written a number of string quartets as a youngster, but then abandoned the form for more than a decade. Meanwhile Franz Josef Haydn was writing music for string quartet that opened up a whole new world Brentano Quartet of possibilities for what could be written for this combination of instruments. Freegal will allow DCL cardholders to download up to three songs per week from Sony Music Entertainment’s music catalog of more than 400,000 tracks. Downloads (in MP3 format) will be free, and patrons may keep all tracks they download. Freegal, which is being offered by a number of area libraries, provides an

impressive variety of genres and musical tracks, from pop and rock to hip hop, classical, jazz, international and holiday. The service is available 24/7 and gives multiple users concurrent access to the same songs. FFL to showcase Flaherty’s artwork Throughout February, the Friends of the Fayetteville Free Library Art Gallery will display works of art by contemporary local artist Sean Flaherty. The Friends of the FFL will host an art reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday Feb. 24, where the public can have an opportunity to meet the artist, enjoy refreshments and purchase works of art if they wish.

Flaherty grew up in San Francisco and currently lives in Jamesville. His work is oil paintings, portraits and figures in classical style. Parishioners stand strong

Though we don’t yet know the outcome of the Vatican Supreme Court’s decision regarding St. Mary’s appeal to reopen the church, we do know that local voices have been heard. The appeal was filed in April 2007; the church, one of 40 in seven counties, shuttered. The parish closing was part of a reconfiguration process initiated by former Bishop James Moynihan to combat the shortage of priests and population shifts from cities to suburbia. But longtime parishioners, with roots to these holy buildings such as St. Mary, have had difficulty letting go. And they haven’t given up. Much like the recent revolution in Egypt, the people who live in this hamlet in their own way have set out to revolutionize the Catholic Church. The people are fighting for their beliefs. Locally, diocesan leaders have fallen short in supporting their own masses; maybe the Vatican will see the forest through the trees.

To the editor: More and more, I find myself pondering the following questions: What is food? What is food to the average consumer? What motivates our purchasing choices? What drives us to choose one product over another? The United States Department of Agriculture boasts six food groups in their pyramid: dairy, vegetables,

meats, grains, oils, and fruit. Yet, we recently learned about the alleged “seasoned beef ” found at a popular fast food chain is only “about 36 percent meat” (CBS News, January 2011). Simultaneously, we learned about the deceptive marketing practices of several ‘food companies’. These companies plaster pictures of fresh fruits on their packaging, yet contain no fruit. Even with the price of these imitation foods exceeding those of real foods, we as consumers, are still willing to make the purchase.

Milk vs. Coke is the perfect example of consumers’ willingness and desire to knowingly purchase an unhealthy product. We all know that coke is full of sugar, it can rot teeth, rust nails, cause diabetes, cause obesity, and has zero nutritional value (Alltech, 2011). Whereas milk is full of calcium, full of protein, has excellent nutritional value and is nature’s ideal food. Milk is even cheaper than Coke. The Fayetteville-Manlius School District has posted a video on its website that features Superintendent Corliss Kaiser and details the proposed capital improvements project, which residents will vote on March 1. The video gives the viewer an up-close look at work that must be done throughout four schools in the district and the bus garage. If voters approve the $10.5 million facilities referendum, construction of a new transportation center, which costs less than one-third of the total project, would begin next year and last about four months. Other capital improvements include locker and elevator replacement at Eagle Hill Middle School; a full fire alarm system replacement at Wellwood Middle School; an HVAC replacement, casework and flooring replacement at Fayetteville Elementary School; and interior door and frame replacements at the high school. High school funds would also go to field drainage, irrigation and sod replacement, but if the turf field project goes through, that money would be allocated to additional infrastructure needs, officials said. Because voters approved a capital reserve fund last May, officials said there is already money set aside, and there would be no tax impact on residents. The district is holding a capital project informational meeting, open to the public, at 7 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 16 at the bus garage, 222 W. Franklin St. in Fayetteville. The F-M High School literary magazine Voices has again received national recognition for “Excellence in Student Literary Magazines.� The 2010 edition of Voices earned a first place in the American Scholastic Press Association competition, and a rating of excellent from The National Council of Teachers of English in its national judging of student literary magazines. This is the first time the magazine has entered the ASPA competition and the fifth time the magazine has been ranked excellent or superior in the NCTE competition. Both national competitions evaluate the quality of high school literary magazines by a panel of judges. The American Scholastic Press Association judges said. “Voices is an excellent publication [which] shows the efforts of talented and creative editors, writers, artists, photographers, layout/graphics designers, staff members and advisor.� ASPA evaluates the magazines in five categories: content, organization, design, presentation and creativity. Voices 2010 excelled in all, earning a perfect score in presentation. The NCTE award is the fifth time in five tries the magazine has been recognized for excellence. East Syracuse Minoa students donated 6,524 food items to St. Matthew’s Food Pantry in East Syracuse and Heaven’s Pantry in Minoa. The delivery took place last week, well after the holidays and just before school breaks begin. “The timing of this donation couldn’t be better,� said Mike Lesczynski, director of St. Matthew’s Food Pantry and store, which is similar to a thrifty shop. “Our income for food purchases comes from our store, and store sales drop off significantly in January and February. This donation will supplement us for a couple of months.� The pantry in East Syracuse serves more than 135 families each month. “Winter is a tough time for many people,� said Connie Baniewicz, high school nurse and event organizer. She said that’s the main reason why the high school chooses January for its annual food drive; this is its third consecutive year. The collection also helps children who won’t be receiving meals at school during winter and spring breaks. The food drive is promoted through students, staff and faculty, during in-school activities and on the electronic board outside the high school. It’s a school-wide effort, with many different clubs and student organizations working within their own groups to make contributions. Fortyfive members of the automotive club collected $1,000 to purchase 2,500 food items. Culinary students collected

MPH senior rises to Olympic level gymnast By Tami S. Zimmerman editor@eaglebulletin.com

At age 7, Neil Damron began his athletic path toward becoming an Olympic-level gymnast. He was exposed to the sport at a friend’s birthday party and said he found the experience to be fun, positive and a good outlet for all his energy. “I remember when Neil started,” said his coach Jim Luttinger, of CNY Gymnastics Center in Shoppingtown Mall. “He’s always had a love for the sport.” The Manlius Pebble Hill senior recently competed in his last meet, the Polar Bear Invitational Gymnastics Tournament, held annually at his home gym. He took first place in the all around as well as in four out of six events (floor exercises, rings, vault and high bar). He placed second in the pommel horse and parallel bars. Damron, who’s competed multiple times at state, regional and national levels, is a Level 10 gymnast, but says he hasn’t given the Olympics much thought. “I have always been focused on my immediate future when it comes to gymnastics,” Damron said. “I want to be the best I can be, and where ever that takes me will make me happy.” As he preps for college, Damron still trains at CNY and teaches beginning gymnasts in his spare time. Luttinger said he’s a great role model to the younger kids because he’s learned to use his time wisely, balancing school, his personal life and this “very demanding, time-consuming sport.” “Neil is a hard working, well mannered, scholar athlete,” said Luttinger, noting his student, who maintains a high honor roll status, also enjoys challenging Model UN-style debates at school. When asked what advice he would give to rising gymnasts like himself, Damron acknowledged the sweat, blood and tears that come with being a committed athlete. For instance, Luttinger recalled Damron having a painful knee condition that kept him from tumbling and vaulting for several years. “Neil had to tumble and vault on a limited basis until it went away, when he was about [age] 14,” Luttinger said. “His persistence and smart training kept him on par with other athletes

Will he continue his love of gymnastics? That depends, he said, on where he goes and what he feels is right for him. In the meantime, however, his advice to rising gymnasts is the same he practices himself: Set goals and put your all into achieving them. “I think you will always benefit [from] this approach,” he said. “Even if you don’t achieve what you were originally aiming for.”

National committee honors staff members of Joslin Diabetes Center Ten members of the Upstate Medical University’s Joslin Diabetes Center medical staff have been recognized by the National Committee for Quality Assurance for excellence in the care and treatment of patients with diabetes. The nine physicians and nurse practitioner honored participated in the statewide Diabetes Campaign Collaborative, a joint initiative of the Healthcare Association of New York State and the New York State Health Foundation to reverse the diabetes epidemic in New York by promoting excellence in clinical care and fostering a comprehensive, coordinated care system for patients with diabetes.

F-M swimmers falls to West Genny; CBA/J-D prevails By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com

Barely a week before taking part in the Section III championships at Nottingham’s Max Newman Pool, the Fayetteville-Manlius boys swim team battled with West Genesee at that same facility. With a chance to break the Wildcats’ 28-meet win streak, the Hornets could not quite pull it off, taking a 99-83 defeat. Right away, it proved exciting. Kevin Koh, Jack Robinson, Ryan Kelley and Will Twichell tore through the 200 medley relay in 1:40.66, the best Section III time of the season – except that WG beat them with 1:40.10, a difference of barely half a second. Not only that, but the Wildcats won the other two relays,

including a 3:23.98 tear through the 400 freestyle that, again, was the fastest sectional time of the season. It left Robinson, Twichell, Koh and Zach Swanson second in 3:27.83. Koh did prevail, though, in the 100 freestyle, edging Robinson, 49.37 seconds to 49.56, and in the 200 freestyle Koh rolled to a victory in 1:52.21. Twichell held off Nate Green, 1:11.94 to 1:12.28, to win the 100 breaststroke. Robinson also lost a narrow 50 freestyle duel with WG’s Carson Elias, finishing in 23.05 seconds as Elias (22.95) took first place. Kelley had to settle for second in the 500 freestyle (5:32.79), with Luke Oliverio third (5:52.59) as WG’s Ben Seketa set another season-best time of 4:49.33, this after he won the 200 individual medley. Seketa also helped two of the Wildcats’ relay teams prevail. Oliverio also was second in the 100 butterfly (1:02.07),

J-D/CBA swept the 200 medley (1:59.22), 200 freestyle (1:42.65) and 400 freestyle (3:48.81) relays as Jorgensen, Byrnes, Speidel, Garrett Farchioine, Matt Cupelo, Jack Martin, Brendan McNamara, Alex Katsarsky, Matt Kopp and Zach Shaw took part.

J-D volleyball ousts ESM from Class A playoffs By Phil Blackwell pblackwell@eaglenewsonline.com Jamesville-DeWitt’s girls volleyball team strode into the Section III Class A playoffs with a single goal – namely, get to the championship match on its home court the night of Feb. 19 and prevail. At least the no. 6 seed Red Rams took care of the first part, knocking out no. 11 seed East Syracuse-Minoa in last Wednesday night’s opening round in four games. A close first game saw the Spartans hang close, but J-D still prevail 25-22. The second game proved a bit more lopsided as the Rams won, 25-19, to take a 2-0 edge. ESM would prolong the match by winning the third game 25-21, but in the fourth game J-D’s all-around talents led to a 25-18 decision that ended the battle. Michelle Dallalah led J-D with 17 assists, four digs and three kills, while Ally Loewy worked up front for

14 kills, adding five aces and nine digs. Jenna Hayward had 13 kills. As the support, Jess Butler had five blocks and Taylor Bierwagen four kills and two blocks. Emily Parker produced 18 digs, while Sonia Narfipur added seven assists. Diane Casinella had eight digs, with Taryn Dausman and Lexi Lerman each contributing seven digs and Frannie Haunfeiner finishing with four kills. On the girls side, CBA won last Wednesday, handling Fulton 59-39 as it gained a 51-28 lead through the first three periods and improved to 12-4 on the season, 10-1 in the OHSL Freedom division. Since they both lost games in the holiday-tournament season, the Christian Brothers Academy and Bishop Grimes boys basketball teams decided to meet each other Saturday night. And it proved a close and exciting affair, with yet another great performance from the Cobras’ Mike Stone – but when it was done, the Brothers had prevailed 62-57. Even in the face of CBA’s trademark defense, Stone converted on a wide range of baskets in the first half, enough to help Grimes earn a 33-30 halftime lead. All told, Stone would get 29 points, 10 of them from free throws. But he, and the rest of the Cobras, cooled off in the third quarter, just as CBA was starting to hit some outside shots in a 22-11 spurt that put them ahead. Fatigue may have set in, too, as Grimes was playing its fourth game in six days. To stay in front, the Brothers made eight of nine free throws in the final period and were 13-for-16 for the half. Back at the start of the week, Grimes, not suffering a letdown after its crucial Feb. 4 win over Bishop Ludden, got another big effort from Stone and beat Solvay 65-54. Meanwhile, Stone hurt the Bearcats early with a variety of shot, then hit some late free throws to prevent a Bearcats comeback. All told, Stone had 30 points, aided by Sugamosto’s total of 12 points as Carnegie and Evans each got eight points. On Wednesday night, both CBA and Grimes won big. The Brothers bashed Chittenango 71-34, streaking its way to a 36-13 halftime lead and a 62-24 margin by the fourth quarter before the starters rested.
