2019 Eagle’s Nest Foundation
ANNUAL REPORT Experiential education for young people, promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character.
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Eagle’s Nest Families, Our year at Eagle’s Nest has been exceptional, and you have been a tremendous part of that success. Under the guidance of Niambi Jaha-Echols, your voices, along with those of our faculty, staff, and participants have helped to shape clear action steps to lead our organization into becoming more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. We have a great deal of work ahead, but we now have a clearly outlined path to help us make strides on this important journey of living more fully into our mission with a constituency more representative of our community at large. Please stay tuned to our blogs, social media, and The Eagle, our biannual newsletter, to read about ongoing initiatives.
Noni Waite-Kucera has been Executive Director of Eagle’s Nest Foundation since 2000.
The financial aid program at Eagle’s Nest is robust and is central in our outreach efforts toward both new communities and our returning families who rely on aid to be able to provide a continuum of programming for their young people. Your support was key in bringing 607 campers and students to our programs. One hundred and thirty four of those participants received $519,200 in financial aid and you, our donors, funded 36% of that amount totalling $190,355. I know I can speak on behalf of every one of our campers and students when I say our camp and school would not have been the same without the presence of those 134 young people who received financial aid in 2019.
On campus, our new Housing and Office Building (on the site of the old maintenance building) is on track to be open for this summer camp season. We are so grateful to each of you who helped to fund this vital project, one that will provide new office spaces for our faculty and additional living accommodations for both camp and OA staff. If you are still interested in funding this initiative, let us know – we still have naming opportunities available! Additionally, your support made other needed renovations to our campus possible. These projects include moving the laundry facilities and recreating that space to become a new Development Office, renovating the Sun Lodge kitchen to include a new dishwashing system, replacing furniture in Sikwayi, and re-roofing several buildings. As we enter into a new decade, we know that our centennial in 2027 will be here before we know it. This past year, we visited 14 cities across the country delivering updates on the priorities we set forth in 2014 to prepare for this milestone event. If you didn’t get to attend one of those gatherings, please don’t hesitate to reach out for an update – we are making great progress and we would love to share that with you. I am so grateful to each of you for helping our organization blossom into its best self, just the growth we strive for in each of our campers and students. You are a steady partner in our progress, and we are honored that you continue to support us.
With Gratitude,

Letter from the
Camp Director This fall and winter, I have had the fortune to travel throughout the Southeast talking with campers, alums, and interested families about Eagle’s Nest Camp and Hante Adventures. It’s such a joy to visit with “Nesters” and hear their enthusiasm for Eagle’s Nest. At each town, I was
community
regaled with stories of how Eagle’s Nest has made an impact on someone’s life, and at each stop, when I watch the camp video and hear Ella say “Camp makes people better people,” I am gratified and know that she is right. There is no doubt in my mind that one to three weeks at Camp or on a Hante Adventure has a tremendous impact on children’s lives. Thanks to all of you and your donations, we are able to offer this opportunity to children for
confidence
EAGLE’S NEST CAMP & HANTE whom the cost of this experience is financially challenging. This year, your support allowed children of varying socio-economic levels to connect with the natural world, grow in confidence, feel compassion, and experience joy in a warm and nurturing community. Last summer, we were able to award a total of $129,600 in financial aid to 142 campers. We also partnered with organizations in Charlotte and in Brevard to bring 16 low income campers to Eagle’s Nest on full scholarships. Many of those campers had previously been at Eagle’s Nest and will return to camp again this summer. One individual from this group will also be participating in Hante AT Trek this summer, deepening their connection to the natural world and gaining skills and confidence that will help buoy them in the challenging high school years ahead. Another long time scholarship recipient will be serving as a Junior Counselor, and we are hoping that someday, one of these participants we become a counselor at Eagle’s Nest.
Here is one such message from a parent of a child who, with the help of financial aid, has attended Eagle’s Nest for many years and will be a Junior Counselor this summer: “I wanted to thank you and the Eagle’s Nest Foundation for your continued support of [our daughter’s] growth, and for making it possible for us to send her to camp (and now The Outdoor Academy). Camp has been life-changing for her. It is amazing what you all accomplish while teaching our children for just three short weeks each summer. The life lessons learned are permanent and wonderful.” I know that this camper and others would not have this experience without your support. I’m grateful to you for the impact you have had on their lives, and also for how that will, in turn, support the positive impact these campers will make in the world.
Throughout this past year, I have received many messages of gratitude from parents and alums about their time at camp or on Hante.

LETTER FROM THE OA DIRECTOR
Glenn DeLaney (right) with his wife, Julia, and son, Elem.
Semesters 48 & 49 As I write this note, students of Semester 50 at The Outdoor Academy are settling into their first full day of classes. Last week, they weathered Orientation Trek temperatures in the low teens with grit and great attitudes, they learned how to run a kitchen crew and fire up a wood stove in the Sun Lodge, and they shared plenty of laughs as new friendships formed. This motivated group
Intellect
of students has joined the ranks of over 1000 talented, daring, thoughtful young people who have made the choice to enrich their high school experience by challenging themselves in this special little corner of the North Carolina mountains. Our alumni community includes teachers, a record-setting long-distance backpacker, non-profit directors, an award-winning poet, a New York Times bestselling author, scientists, novelists, NOLS instructors, filmmakers, university professors, farmers, a globetrotting digital nomad, artists, a Forbes "30 Under 30" recipient, professional musicians, and on and on. One of my favorite parts of the job is talking to these alums, who repeatedly tell me that their time at OA helped start them on the path to where they are today. It is an exceptional privilege to work with young people who choose to challenge themselves with a semester at OA, and it is even more exciting thinking about what they will accomplish in the future. As we embark on our fiftieth semester, I want to thank you for the role you have played in helping The Outdoor Academy grow over these past
Environment
THE OUTDOOR ACADEMY twenty-five years. Whether you were a student, parent, faculty member, or simply a friend of the school, you left your mark on OA. Thank you, too, for continuing to support our mission of providing experiential education for young people that promotes the natural world and the betterment of human character. In 2019, your donations helped us grant $389,600 in scholarships to OA students. Over 50% of OA’s 52 graduates received financial assistance last year, and the average student award was nearly $14,000. I count myself lucky to work for a school that not only provides such a unique and worthwhile experience but also is committed to making that experience accessible to families from a wide range of socio-economic means. Again, thank you for being a part of The Outdoor Academy, we hope you can join us on April 25th, 2020 to celebrate 25 years in Pisgah Forest!
OA alumni and their families are invited to campus on April 25, 2020 to celebrate 25 years of The Outdoor Academy! Rally your classmates, and represent your semester. Visit campus for this day filled with reconnections with people and places, live music, a Silent Auction of handmade items, work crews, a catered ticketed dinner, and more. To register and see the full schedule, visit our website www.theoutdooracademy.org
In Gratitude,
Glenn DeLaney

There are many staff members—from OA faculty to summer counselors, to administrators, to camp nurses—who give back not only their time but their financial support to the Annual Fund. These individuals are recognized throughout the Honor Roll with two stars alongside each name. We honor the commitment they have each made to Eagle’s Nest and the young people we serve.
