2022
Eagle’s Nest Foundation
ANNUAL REPORT
Experiential education for young people, promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character.
Dear Eagle’s Nest Friends and Families,
I have such deep gratitude for each of you who continue to support Eagle’s Nest with your gifts of time and energy, as well as those of financial nature. This place, our people, and our mission are stronger because of you and the support you lend. As spring creeps across our mountains, it is nice to take a moment to reflect on the year gone by and note the significant accomplishments we made in 2022.
Sustainability throughout our programming, practices, and people has been a central theme for Eagle’s Nest over the last year. Since spring of 2020 – now three years ago – out of both necessity and by choice, we have made changes to the ways we go about our camp and school routines. And with change, often comes the need for deeper resources and you, our friends and families, have again rallied and pushed our Annual Fund and gifts to Endowments over our expectations. We, in turn, are putting those funds to good use.
In 2022, our scholarship funds supported 85 campers and 21 students with a total of $506,430 in financial aid. Of that, $196,090 was generously donated by you, our supporters. Having the ability to meet the financial needs of families who would otherwise not be able to provide a session of camp or a semester at OA for their young person is what makes our community stronger. Knowing that we have many more who we could bring to the table, whether it is by the woodstove in the Sun Lodge or with their table family in the Whole Kitchen, is the work we have ahead.
Gifts to the Annual Fund also go toward both expanding and maintaining our campus, in support of our programs and our faculty and staff. This year we purchased six acres with two housing units and space for 3 additional units just 5 minutes from campus. Current housing prices and availability in Transylvania County make it very difficult for our faculty and staff to find homes nearby. To help alleviate that problem, Eagle’s Nest has made a commitment to increase the housing stock we own. This recent purchase is one step in reaching this goal.
Raising funds is one way we sustain our campus – also important is the work we are doing to increase our energy efficiency, grow a portion of our food, and more efficiently live in this Little River Valley. In 2022, we conducted a solar study, a partial energy audit, and partnered with our energy provider to replace all lighting on campus to LED fixtures and bulbs. These studies are setting us up for a full sustainability proposal for our campus that we hope to implement over the next few years.
Eagle’s Nest’s endowed funds are yet another source for sustaining our work. In 2022, the seven named scholarship funds and one general endowed fund generated a total of $16,815. As we think about sustainability, we know growing those funds is one way to ensure we are able to continually support our young people, our facilities, and our mission year over year.
At the urging and help of a consultant, Eagle’s Nest applied for and received the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC) in 2022, which resulted in a much needed $243,000 additional funding toward our bottom line. We are so thankful for the support we have received through both PPP funding and now this ERTC as we move past the seismic shifts caused by the pandemic.
Out my window, the maple trees are in full bud – just bursting with the promise of what is to come. I am eager for this year ahead knowing that you all, our friends and families, believe so much in our mission and the importance of the work we are doing with young people.
In gratitude,

Igrew up in the country. As a curious elementary school kid and a lover of the outdoors, I spent my summer vacation days exploring the woods and creeks near my house. I would spend hours looking for the little jugs at the base of wild ginger (Asarum canadense L), flipping over logs to see what wiggly things I’d find, and flipping rocks in the creek with hopes that a crawdad might wave his claws at me from under one.
When I started working at Eagle’s Nest, I felt right at home in the woods that dominate our campus (143 acres of which are in a conservation easement). I was so happy to find wild ginger on the path to Tree Falls, and crawdads and other critters in the Hart Branch Creek that flows beside the Campcraft shed. Thirty years later, I’m fortunate each summer to teach “Nature Lore,” a class where I relive my childhood days (in a way) while exploring the woods, creeks, ponds, and

meadows at Eagle’s Nest with a group of eager campers.
I feel pretty lucky that as a child I was able to while-away my summer days outdoors amongst the rhododendrons without a care in the world. Those times taught me to notice the beauty of my surroundings and made me curious to learn more about the natural world. Many children don’t have that opportunity. Thanks to your support, 85 campers were able to come to Eagle’s Nest for a summer of connection - to the outdoors,
Paige Lester-Niles, Camp Director, her husband Andy, son Finn, and daughter Posey
to themselves and to friends. An additional 4 were able to participate in three-week outdoor adventures with Hante Adventure, taking them backpacking in the Hundred Mile Wilderness of Maine, to the canyons and desert in Utah, and canoeing, rock climbing, and backpacking in Western North Carolina. All of these experiences gave our participants a chance to learn more about the natural world around them, while also helping them become more resilient, curious, and confident.
Each year, Eagle’s Nest Camp budgets 10% or more of our revenue for Camp and Hante participant financial aid. We also partner with agencies in Charlotte and Brevard to bring approximately 18 campers to Eagle’s Nest with 100% financial aid. Our budgeted aid alone does not cover the requested need. We rely on Annual Fund contributions and on endowed scholarships to help support our participants’ financial needs.
In addition to providing financial aid, we are also able to help outfit our participants for their time at Camp or on Hante. Through our Gear Lending Library, we are able to lend sleeping bags, backpacks, raincoats, hiking boots, and
other outdoor gear to them for their time with us. Again, we would note be able to provide this additional support without your monetary and in kind donations.
When I take my Nature Lore campers into the woods, I teach them to notice things - the critters that live in the creek, the sounds of the birds hidden in pine trees, and the edible plants under their feet. My hope is that the connections they make with nature will lead them to not only explore the outdoors, but also to protect it. Last summer, while walking through the woods after a heavy afternoon rainstorm, one of our full financial aid campers saw a patch of moss and exclaimed with joy “look how green it is!” It warmed my heart that he was so in awe of this delicate forest plant. He made a connection to the outdoors that will stay with him.
Thank you for your support in connecting children to the woods, to tiny plants, and to experiences of awe. You are helping develop future teachers, scientists, environmentalists, engineers, and more. You are helping to create a better future.

OA DIRECTOR
Semesters 54 & 55
Greetings,
LETTER FROM THE Intellect
As I look ahead to the end of Semester 56 of The Outdoor Academy--my final as its Director-I am filled with gratitude for the hundreds of interesting young people and dozens of talented educators with whom I have had the opportunity to work over these past five years. I also feel an immense amount of hope for the future of this distinctive school, as we have come through the pandemic with a wonderful sense of creativity and momentum borne of the necessity of figuring out how to operate through a challenging time. Signature programs, such as our interdisciplinary Bridge class and our CIRCLEs social-emotional learning curriculum, have emerged as mature, comprehensive manifestations of the mission, vision, and values of this institution.
While each OA Director stretching back to 1995 when Ted & Helen kicked this thing off has made their mark, I like to think that none of us have owned the vision of the school. Rather, we have each engaged in the exciting work of attempting to weave together a variety of perspectives about what the promise and purpose of this place should be; indeed, each leader of the school has had the privilege of drawing on the collective experiences, aspirations, hopes, and beliefs of thousands of stakeholders across decades in the often-challenging and always-engaging work of considering how to best pursue our mission. I believe that this is why our offerings are so engaging and impactful...they are the product of a great many people's efforts over a great many years.
That constant of community has been the central component of the growth and evolution of this special place, and your role as both a member of this community and a financial supporter of its mission have been, and remain, central to the sustainability of the passion, energy, intellectualism, and creativity that have driven this school forward in leaps and bounds since 1995. You help create
E nvironment
access for students for whom this experience resonates, and they show up giving it their all. You support the development of signature programs, whether it is helping pay the stipend for a faculty member working extra hours to advance an idea or supporting the construction and maintenance of an inspiring space where they pitch that idea to their colleagues and then set out to implement it. My hope is that some of the programmatic initiatives, shifts in the OA culture, and new ways of doing things that we have pursued in recent years will become woven into the fabric of the essential OA experience for both students and faculty. And, I hope that a great deal more will continue to evolve, change, and remain responsive to the needs of the students, families, faculty–and, indeed, the needs of our world–in the years to come.
Again, your support not only helps keep the lights on, but it fuels and sustains this special community that comes together and--each and every day--strives to make The Outdoor Academy the most inspiring, impactful experience that it can possibly be.
For that, I Give Thanks!

Tinder: $10/month - Tinder is small and very dry and is responsible for starting the fire. Your gift of $10/month is bigger than one piece of tinder; it is the collective work of many that brings young people the power of experiential education.
Kindling: $25/month - Without kindling, a fire cannot grow. These sticks and twigs provide substance to the flames. Your gift of $25/month feeds the fire, helps it grow, and provides vital support for programs and development.
Fuel: $50/month - The larger logs on the fire sustain the embers and keep us warm through the night. Your gift of $50/month carries the weight of a log; it brings much needed financial aid to families who otherwise could not afford the experience of outdoor education.
S’mores!: $100/month - The best part about building a fire is eating S’mores! Your gift of $100/month is the treat we enjoy after collecting all our tinder, kindling, and fuel; it warms the lives of campers and students who build their fires at 43 Hart Road.

GIVING DAY & FIRE KEEPERS
The benefits of planned giving are numerous to both you and to future generations of campers, students, and adventurers at Eagle’s Nest and The Outdoor Academy. Sustainers have included Eagle’s Nest in thei estate plans, leaving a lasting legacy in support of experiential education, the natural world, and the betterment of human character.
Gifts for today through Annual Giving assist with current operations and programming. Gifts for tomorrow include special giving for new construction, special projects, new endowments, and future program enhancements. Gifts for forever established through wills and trusts, bequests, and other planned giving vehicles create a lasting legacy at Eagle’s Nest Foundation.
Our Sustainers have designated to a variety of funding opportunities that touch every corner of our programming. We can accept planned gifts of any size to any of our current funds (including Unrestricted) or endowed funds. Named scholarship funds can be established at a minimum of $5,000, and endowed scholarship funds require a minimum investment of $25,000.
A lot of people may feel uncomfortable thinking about this subject [of Estate Planning], or they may worry about giving away money that they themselves may one day need, -because none of us knows how long we will live. Designating money to Eagle’s Nest Foundation or other organizations - funds they will receive only after your death - just seemed logical to me, because of course, at that point, I will no longer be needing it!”
As you discuss planned giving vehicles with your financial advisor, you will find many planned giving strategies available to you. Planned gifts include bequests, gifts of life insurance and retirement plans, and other contributions made through a donor’s estate. Many planned giving options allow donors and their loved ones to receive income during their lifetime from assets that will eventually benefit Eagle’s Nest.
